“Proposals for the $40 million a year Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures fund must demonstrate they will deliver benefits beyond the applicants to wider New Zealand, such as creating new highvalue jobs in rural communities,” said agriculture minister, Damien O’Connor. Anyone with a project that could make a difference to New Zealand’s food and fibre sectors could be eligible for funding through Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures. SFF Futures funds innovative projects that will create more value from the food and fibre industries. “The primary industries bring in more than $40 billion a year in export revenue and drove the latest GDP growth with agriculture, forestry and fisheries up 4.1 per cent. Our challenge and opportunity is to generate more value from these industries while sustaining the natural resources we depend upon for future generations.” Mr O’Connor says SFF Futures provides a single gateway for farmers, growers and organisations to seek investment in projects that help our economic engine move from volume to value. “The projects will grow important industries, deliver environmental and sustainability benefits, foster collaboration, build capability, create new products, services and jobs, and importantly retain the benefits in New Zealand. “This fits in with the work of the Primary Sector Council, which is taking a good look into the future of our primary sectors to help direct a strategic path forward for each sector. “Together SFF Futures and the Primary Sector Council will help our farmers and growers run their operations sustainably and profitably, driving a strong economy that helps raise the living standards of all New Zealanders.” Projects could be about developing new products or services, or ideas

for creating new jobs, increasing skills and capability or encouraging better collaboration and information sharing. They can range from small, one-off initiatives requiring a small grant, to long-running, multi-milliondollar partnerships. SFF supports applied research and projects led by farmers, growers, and foresters. Some of the first 1,000 projects supported have included facing up to facial eczema, exploring fresh ways to safeguard against mastitis at dry off, dairying and peat soils and how bovine disease can be wiped out. Saving grapevines from trunk diseases, utilising laser scanning in horticulture and eradicating beetles as well as controlling crop contamination and managing the inputs in fodder beet systems. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES November 2018

Hull checks for pests Northland-based dive contractors Marine Environmental Field Services aim to inspect approximately 2,000 boat hulls including recreational boats, super yachts, fishing vessels to barges between now and May next year for a range of unwanted marine pests threatening Northland’s marine environment. With pests like Mediterranean fanworm established in Whangarei Harbour and recently discovered in Opua, the owners of vessels travelling from these areas to other spots are being urged to be extra vigilant. “We are especially keen to ensure vessels are free of marine pests before their owners start travelling to new areas with the onset of warmer summer weather,” says biosecurity manager – marine and strategy, for the Northland Regional Council, Sophia Clark. As well as rules covering transportation of marine pests, the council now has new rules limiting the amount of ‘biofouling’ — build-ups of microorganisms, algae, plants and pests — vessels can be carrying when they enter new spots. “Vessel hulls are the most common way that marine pests hitch a ride and our new Marine Pathway Management Plan aims to manage this issue.” Under the plan, any vessel entering Northland waters or moving from one harbour to another must have no more than ‘light fouling’, defined as a slime layer or barnacles and a few patches, up to 100mm in diameter, of macrofouling. “Marine pests can hide within boat fouling, so preventing the movement of affected vessels is the best way to stop the spread of marine invaders.

The owners of vessels found with more than light fouling will be notified so they can ensure the vessel is clean before moving to a new area. “If a pest species is detected, owners will be asked to haul the vessels out and clean or treat them in what can potentially be a costly process. A $500 fine may also apply. “No-one can afford to drop their guard when it comes to marine pests. The council is very appreciative of the steps many are already taking and has been impressed by a noticeable change in the attitude to boat cleanliness,” says Ms Clark. As an example of the 140 vessels inspected during the last Christmas period, just two had a marine pest species present. Those pests had been concealed in ‘niche’ areas on the vessels, which require special attention

when applying antifouling or during a ‘lift and wash’ period. “Council strongly suggests doublechecking niche areas, like the base of the keel, behind anodes, and bow thrusters before your vessel goes back in the water. Marina operators have already been requiring a receipt proving a vessel conforms to what has been dubbed the ‘six or one’ initiative — being either antifouled within six months of leaving a known fanworm-infected area or having undergone a ‘lift and wash’ within one month of leaving an infected area like Auckland.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

THE INCREDIBLE ORCHID by Ann van Engelen

An industrial chemist by profession, Ross Tucker creates exotic and unusual orchids — displaying to the world a vast array of creativity and succession of the plants, which date back thousands of years.

“O

rchids can flower all year round, and apart from hobby growers, we are probably the one exotic speciality store in the country selling online at Tucker Orchids,” says Ross. Being a chemist, he also developed a fertiliser ‘Orchid Tucker’ and plants generally some orchids, can bloom within six weeks of use. “My interest began because my grandfather grew orchids as a gardener in England for a ‘Lord’ at a country estate. After he fought in World War One, he came here and brought plants with him and grew slipper orchids for the cut flower market. My mother had them in the yard, and they needed rescuing,” says Ross. The main method of reproducing orchids is through flasks

or tissue culture, and Ross understood the technical terms in books he read so began producing flasks of orchids — approximately 25 plants grow in a glass jar via seed or reproduction and mericloning. “I added varieties and experimented reproducing them. As a hobby grower, I overproduced quickly and ran out of space but with the New Zealand cut flower industry in its infancy around the 1970s they needed stock, so we became a supplier. “In the beginning orchid exports were financially profitable, if not better than the New Zealand wine industry. Due to government restrictions over the past 30 years, it is now almost a non-existent export industry. We had approximately 300 growers exporting cymbidium cut

Ross and Susan Tucker at Tuckers Orchid Nursery have added many varieties of orchids to their collection

Ross believes the orchid will achieve the stardom status it deserves here in New Zealand in the future

Ross travels to events around the world speaking about orchid breeding and passing on his knowledge

flowers across the world, and we are now down to 30 because MPI put so many rules in place with no support and that businesses got sold up. “It was devastating for our growers, and the Taiwanese saw the opportunity and took our market and customers. They now earn around seven billion dollars a year. “I now produce pot plant orchids for the New Zealand market and some varieties most people have never seen. Some are so rare; they cannot be exported, including New Zealand natives. Many are threatened, and the national orchid body are trying to conserve them but keep running up against issues with MPI restrictions — because MPI don’t understand the plant biology and should consult with people that are experts not rely on their limited knowledge.” Ross sends plants offshore believing other countries will be the heroes and keep them in circulation.

“I brought a shipment in from China, and MPI literally took plants that were 6,000 years old and destroyed them. They just killed them with no understanding of what it was they were destroying — that is horrific,” says Ross. “I believe Chinese philosopher Confucius grew them thousands of years ago. The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taiwan has the rice drawings of orchids. “Scientific research is phenomenal, and documentaries note that Darwin watched orchids and they really do seek a specific pollinator. “The subspecies of an insect is specific to each genera, and without that pollinator, you cannot keep the orchid alive in its natural environment. MPI refuse to understand; it is that simple and uncalled for restrictions mean plants die.” “Ross finds perfumed ones fascinating and hybridises colours,

forms and scents. Orchids grow in every climate and continent except Antarctica that I know of. “Some grow under snow, die down and return in spring. It is the most evolved plant in the plant kingdom and its reproduction is often called ‘sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll’. “This is because some mimic the insect to attract it to procreate, some produce a drug, which gets their pollinator high and some offer pheromones.” Ross breeds plants unique to New Zealand and speaks at events around the world. “My line is highly scented and called Zygopetalum, which means tongue. We have developed scents and have

thousands of varieties on-site, but there are some 33,000 species worldwide yet to collect. Other countries are driven by orchids, and New Zealand will catch up once MPI scientists learn and understand what they are dealing with instead of destroying them. “We constantly produce new varieties because people are collectors and keeping it fresh is important. I love developing new varieties. We win awards and are world recognised with a few hundred varieties registered with the Royal Horticultural Society. ”Orchids are amazing, and they are the number one pot plant in the world at present, and here in New Zealand they will achieve stardom.”

Raewyn and Rosco Pennell own 25 acres on the old Kaimaumau gum fields where they originally ran ostrich and emu through their company Northland Ostrich and Emu Ltd.

“I

n 1993, the New Zealand Emu Farmers’ Association held its inaugural meeting of approximately 20 members, to encourage and assist farmers to diversify into a new ‘industry’, and to help build a viable lifestyle block income stream,” says Raewyn. “By 1995 there were 350 emu farms throughout New Zealand, with quarantine facilities set up to import and hatch eggs. This was to increase the few bloodlines available here from zoos and animal parks because Australia did not allow export of their indigenous emu, so eggs were mainly sourced from Canada.” A welfare code was introduced in 1998, and production for the meat,

leather, feathers and therapeutic oil was underway. “Most farmers have been disillusioned by the difficulty in processing, and transporting a very active bird to facilities often far away to be economical and in keeping with good husbandry.” Twenty-five years later Rosco and Raewyn are one of the few emu farms left in the country and are down to a core of breeding stock to supply chicks to incoming farmers. They also mentor others interested in starting an emu farm. “We started with four pairs, and have hatched many chicks over the years, but because of our geographical location in the Far North, the birds did

Rosco and Raewyn Pennell have been involved with emu since the early 1990s not transport well to the processing plants in Fielding twelve hours drive away, so we progressively downsized our operation to home processing. “Emu produce high protein, dense red meat and the whole bird is used when they are culled.” They are processed around 18 months old when they are approximately 45–50kg.

“We render about six litres of oil from the layer of fat under the skin and abdominal cavity of each bird, and we produce salami and sausages from a few cuts, but cannot sell the meat. The oil is therapeutic and rendered in small batches and sold locally and overseas. The sales basically pay for the feed costs. Feathers are sold to local weavers for making korowai — Maori ceremonial

We have one pair, and one trio still producing and they laid more than 70 eggs this season, but as we were traveling overseas, we didn’t incubate or let the birds hatch their own chicks. Our daughter blew the eggs, and froze the contents, which we will feed to two pigs over the summer months.” Emus lay from April to August — every three days, large avocado look-alike eggs, averaging 600 grams. Each hen lays on average 30–40 eggs a season, they are popular for craft work, a blown egg sells for between $10 and $12. “Our birds were still laying at the beginning of September this year. The emu meat is dense red and high in protein, and the oil has been used for centuries for a variety of medicinal purposes is eight weeks, and the male sits for the duration and also raises the chicks. Ostriches lay during summer months, and the incubation period is six weeks, and the chicks can be more difficult to raise,” says Raewyn. “We started chick rearing running four ostrich trios, producing on average 24 eggs a week for incubation. We grew the chicks to three months/35kg when they were transported to Taranaki for growing out. We downsized the ostrich but kept our original breeding trio — Brutus, Cleo and Claudia who lived out their lives in retirement. We have a pet emu, Carol, who has free range of the property. She loves attention, and a close encounter with a friendly emu is always guaranteed

Researching towards a sutainale dairy sectr by Denise Gunn

Since graduating from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Kieran McCahon has moved to Hamilton to further his studies. Under a DairyNZ Masters Scholarship, Kieran is working towards a Masters in management majoring in agribusiness, through the University of Waikato.

K

ieran grew up on his parents’ 1,000-cow dairy farm on the west coast of the Pouto Peninsula near Dargaville. “The farm is approximately 780ha consisting of two adjacent dairy platforms and an adjoining dairy-beef/ dairy support block,” said Kieran. All through secondary school, Kieran intended to study engineering, selecting his subject choices accordingly. However, towards the end of year 13, he decided

to study agricultural science. “There are two main things that attracted me to agriculture; the lifestyle, and the ability to make a significant difference,” said Kieran. “Science excites me; the ability to critically analyse a problem, then develop and test solutions.” Kieran said this led him to undertake his Master’s research. His thesis is focussing on the biophysical, economic and environmental

The trip’s purpose was to learn about and develop solutions to the problems faced by smallholder farmers in southern Vietnam. Kieran said the trip was split into two sections. The first half of the trip focussed on gaining an understanding of the local production systems and the cultural influences. This involved presentations from stakeholders, site visits to Syngenta manufacturing, research and developing sites, as well as a community immersion programme meeting with local farmers to discuss the many issues they face and assisting with crop harvest. “In the latter stage of the programme, we were split into groups, and a competition was held to develop a scaleable solution to one of the problems faced by these small-holders.” Kieran said Syngenta put $2,000 towards a pilot project for the winning design. On the final evening of the trip, the groups presented their solutions. Kieran’s group came up with the winning project. This project looked at solutions to chemical waste disposal. Much of the waste from agricultural chemicals are either left in the field or burnt near local communities. “For me, the trip was about gaining exposure to international production systems to see how agriculture is conducted in other parts of the world. It was interesting to see how similar many of the challenges that these smallholder farmers faced were to those facing New Zealand farmers.” While attending Massey University, Kieran was also a member of the Massey Young Farmers Club for three

He said being on the committee gave him an appreciation of the work that goes on behind the scenes in organising events and encouraging participation. “There’s also a strong sense of accomplishment being involved with a committee that is passionate about delivering value to the club and its members.” Following his recent move to Hamilton, Kieran joined the Hamilton City Young Farmers. Contracting with Matt Lewis Matt Lewis Contracting is owned and operated by Matt and Terri Lewis and has been in operation since 2015 offering a varying range of general earthwork services to clients based in the Bay of Islands and surrounding areas. Matt was raised locally in Okaihau and has always been passionate about the farming and agricultural industries. From early on he aspired to own and operate his very own contracting business so he could utilise his vast knowledge and experience of the local area as well as clients’ needs and requests. Matt specialises in a wide range of general earthworks and metal cartage all over the Far North to meet client’s specified requests. Through his knowledge and the client’s request, both work together to get the optimum completed results, to both parties’ expectations. With two 13-tonne diggers with varying attachments such as an auger, stick rake and a newly made to order hedge trimmer, a six-wheeler tip truck and transporter, Matt Lewis Contracting is efficiently able to complete tasks that they are entrusted with whilst adhering to their stringent health and safety requirements. The company cover varying facets of earthworks including building sites, retaining walls — both rock and pole/ timber, augering/drilling, hedge trimming, landscaping, driveways, carting and supplying of metals and rocks. They

also do lifestyle maintenance, forestry roading, dam and lake construction, subdivision works, and a diverse range of works for local farmers such as drainage, raceways, fence lines and effluent ponds. With experienced staff, they can tackle any job requested of them and have it completed in a timely and professional manner. Matt prides himself on his work ethic and customer service, and when questioned about the best part of his business he stated: “meeting a diverse range of people and seeing satisfied customers at the end of each job.”

Avocado pollination during spring by Erica Faber – Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados

Spring is one of the busiest times on avocado orchards and, for growers, the to-do list seems endless. One of the most important tasks is ensuring you have enough pollinators at the right time, to optimise pollination and fruit set. Ensure you have your bees in the orchard no later than between 5% and 10% open flower. Often growers will be conservative on beehives in orchards but when you have put in all the hard work and expense to ensure good flowering, don’t stumble at the last hurdle — it’s important to do everything you can to ensure the best possible pollination and fruit set. The only way for fruit to set is for pollinators to move pollen onto the flowers. It’s a numbers game and the more players you have on the field, the more goals you will score. We recommend between eight and 12 hives a hectare depending on flowering intensity and tree density. To cover all your bases, have bumble bees in the orchard as well at a ratio of 25–50% to honey bees, depending on the weather conditions over pollination. It’s important that your bees work as many hours as possible — so place them in groups around the orchards in the sunniest, most protected spots so that they will be active earlier, working the flowers, which will be in the female functioning phase and ready to receive pollen.

Place a source of water close to the hives so that the bees don’t have to travel far in search of water, which would mean less time working in your trees. Place a branch or something similar in the water trough so that the bees can safely drink and not drown. Pheromone products can also be used to enhance pollination and are sprayed onto flowers to attract the bees and encourage them to work more intensely.

FROM THE GROUND UP Gain consent before building A consent has a myriad of meanings, but in the case of construction, it can be simply described as permission to build a structure with the assurance that it complies within the rules and regulations your local council and the building industry has in place. It is the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority that certain works on the project meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Some minor work is exempt under the act, but consent is required for most work including retaining walls more than 1.5 metres, swimming and spa pools, fencing, decks above 1.5 metres high, pergolas attached to buildings, freestanding non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres, plumbing and drainage work, relocation of buildings, additions and alterations to existing buildings, new buildings and heating

including fireplaces. Building consent applications can be complex, and it is recommended that you engage a professional person to help with design work and drawings. It pays to check with your council before you start a project to ensure you know the rules and legal requirements and have the right information as it can be costly to rectify issues if you have not complied. Consents have a lifespan from the date of issue, so ensure you know when it will expire. It is important to read your resource consent as soon as you receive it as it may include conditions, which control the way an activity is carried out.

Considering a pool

With summer on its way, the idea for many families is to add a swimming pool to their property as a convenient way to have fun, cool off, entertain friends and hang out. Swimming pools are a good way to get that much-needed exercise after a hard day’s work and they also add a new dimension aesthetically to a garden or yard. No matter what type of pool you are considering it is important to know that there are specific rules covering swimming pool creation and installation including excavation of the land, structure of the pool and the product that is used to create it. Regardless if it is for swimming, paddling or spa pools, these rules refer to anything that can be defined as a swimming pool. If the pool has the capability of holding water with a depth greater than 400mm (16 inches) then it is required to be fenced in accordance with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act — this includes blow up and temporary pools. The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 exists to help protect children from the danger of drowning. It does this by requiring owners to fence their pools, and the act information covers doors and walls to buildings adjoining the pool, gates, fence height requirements, ground clearance and materials used. All pools that are installed must comply with the act. All pool fencing

requires a building consent, including that around spa pools, and some pools require consent for the construction of the pool itself. Information can be found on building consents at your local council, or your pool specialist should have this available. Swimming pool fences must only surround the pool and the area immediately around it. The area must only include things used in association with the pool, for example, changing sheds. It must not include things not related to the pool such as clotheslines, children’s playground equipment or vegetable gardens. Buildings and boundary fences may form part of the pool fence provided they comply and meet the requirements of the act. Remember, safety is a priority as accidents happen in a split second and having your swimming pool, no matter what type, how big or small, being aware and knowing the rules is essential. Your local pool specialist can help with pool design options, installation and regulation advice. Information on the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 can also be found on the legislation.govt.nz website.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Total repiling solutions Total Repile owners Chris and Katharina Cox are in the business of helping people’s dreams of a straight house come true when it comes to repiling their homes. Chris has been in the industry for some nine years, and along with their team of seven the couple service from Auckland to Cape Reinga. “Over time, and especially common in old villas, the structure of a house can weaken, foundations shift and the floor can become uneven,” says Chris. Various reasons contribute to this including soft ground conditions or deterioration of old timber piles. “Certain signs indicate when the house is moving — uneven floors, windows or doors jamming and cracks on the ceilings and walls. To avoid further damage — your building may need to be repiled or relevelled. “We pride ourselves on helping our clients have straight, safe house piles, ensuring years of good living whether it be a new build, relocating a family homestead or repiling an existing farmhouse. Having firm foundations before starting renovations is important,

we also lift buildings whether it be because of land movement, repairing foundation or structural damage, to fix moisture and ventilation issues or to just enjoy higher views from a newlybuilt deck.” Total Repile provides solutions to a diverse range of residential and commercial properties using the latest equipment and H5 treated timber piles to achieve secure and strong foundations that last. “We provide free quotes and consultation, so people know exactly what is needed upfront. FROM THE GROUND UP

Inspired by the best

Pay attention!

by Andy Bryenton

This year’s crop of top homes is in, designed by some of our most talented local architects and executed with style by masterful tradespeople. While many of these masterpieces are beyond the budget of the average home renovator or builder, there’s a lot we can take away from the broader trends which inform these highly acclaimed homes — and those of their kind abroad. The key to many, if not all of the top efforts in design for 2018 has been the place of the home in the environment. Not just it’s physical position, though there has been much thought given in each example to how the structure forms a cohesive picture with the land, and how the land is in turn framed by the windows and internal spaces of the home when those within look outside. There’s also a rejection of the old colonialist sensibility that a building should stamp its mark on the scenery. Now it’s the other way round, with some of 2018’s top-rated homes seeming to organically grow from hillsides, mimic stands of reeds by the water, or sit like natural features on forested slopes. This aesthetic extends to practical considerations — the use of glass and concrete to harvest warmth and store it, for example, or the use of recycled materials or alternative construction techniques. In some extreme designs, meadows extend onto rooftops and windows are fixed in walls hung with vertical gardens, or weathered-look timber is interspersed with deliberately patina-surfaced metal. Inside, living spaces add drama with high and angled ceilings, room to display carefully selected works of art and cleanliness of form, which is almost stark in its use of materials like concrete and timber laminate, which conceal their own ability to foster warmth.

Thus, even if it’s not possible to start with a blank sheet of paper and sketch out a designer home, the modern materials technology deployed by our top architects could provide the present-day renovator with interesting options. Some of these enable a striking image, others the ability to play with the definition of indoor and outdoor spaces to best effect. While others help to harvest the sunlight, seal in warmth, cut power bills and make even the most traditional-looking colonial villa conversion a ‘home of tomorrow’.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Improving on nature by Andy Bryenton

We Kiwis are an outdoors kind of people — perhaps stemming from our heritage, from the generally mild climate, from a simple appreciation of living in a picture-postcard beautiful country. No matter what the excuse, as summer rolls around, most of us want to entertain guests, fire up the barbecue and generally spend as much time as possible outside. ensure a minimum of swearing and cursing on — attempted — startup. If your lawn is too extensive, remember that it’s both money saving and trendy to grow your own veg these days — a quick trip to the timber merchants could furnish you with raised garden beds and henceforth a crop of healthy, organic green to brag about. For paths, remember that crushed shells cover a multitude of sins. Wood chip or bark does the dame for ornamental gardens and those scrappy bits along fences, tip, rake and enjoy. The masterpiece of many a backyard is a deck from which to survey one’s kingdom. It harks back to our ancestors wanting to be the captain of a ship, perhaps — but just like boat builders of yesterday, it pays to do a great job M1136 PROMO 06/15

For some, this means extended sojourns at the lakes or the beach. For most, it means rolling up the proverbial sleeves and taking on the backyard, modern New Zealand’s last wilderness. Well — not really. But after a winter of neglect, it can certainly look like one! Big plans come with summer — fueled by rosy-cheeked images of barbecue chefs basking in their family’s adulation, or sophisticated adult friends sipping Pinot Gris beneath a stylish loggia. There’s a clear line between the dream and the kikuyu-haunted, rusty-swing-set reality, and with the right tools, it’s not as tough as it looks. Start by uncovering the blank canvas. Deploy the mower and weed eater (or brush cutter, if things have gotten truly wild) after giving both a once-over to

entertainer is now so great that the indoor kitchen pales in comparison. So the real challenge is not constructing a perfect haven for summer fun — it’s learning to cook something other than partially charcoaled sausages to go with that Pinot Gris.

BUSINESS PROFILE

HeliNorth’s newest pilot HeliNorth pilots are qualified and experienced for the job at hand, and they know that even the most sophisticated helicopter is only as good as its pilot. The team at Helinorth help farmers and lifestyle block owners seeking weed control, fertiliser spreading, grass seeding, forestry operations as well as insect and pest management. Based in Dargaville, Reuben Wright has extensive experience in helicopter work and is the operations manager of the HeliNorth depot based in Dargaville focussing on anything north of the Auckland harbour bridge. “We recently welcomed pilot Grant McKenzie to our team here in Northland. Grant has thousands of hours of flying experience and has worked across the country from the deep south to the Far North and is now located at Tangiteroria. He has extensive experience as a pilot in many situations including firefighting, frost protection, beehive lifting, spraying and fertilising and relocating building materials, water tanks and pools into remote or inaccessible locations and has a large knowledge base in agriculture and GPS mapping. “I take pride in getting my work done promptly and professionally for our clients, and I enjoy all aspects and the variety of jobs that come my way, we also use drones which are perfect for both large farmers and lifestyle block owners

with moderate to steep blocks that are inaccessible land by ground vehicles. If you have ragwort, thistle or gorse — the drone can quietly spray without messing up your paddocks.” says Grant. Reuben says now is the time for gorse spraying and making sure crops are insect free. “It is the season to get on top of your ravenous insects such as crickets before they decimate your crops. You will be surprised how much grass and kumara plants crickets destroy. When a cricket is hungry, it doesn’t take long for them to destroy your total crop. “We are Spreadmark certified and spread the cricket bait in the targeted area as well as other forms of pest control using the GPS TracMap in all of our helicopters. Other pests can also be dealt with, and gorse is getting into its growing stages, now and it is the ideal time to kill it. “Our TracMap system has a direct online hook up to the Precision Balance and Ravensdown App for proof of placement of fertiliser. We are a local business and believe we are fair and professional. Call us for more information, options or advice.”

Former Trans-Atlantic Rowing Champion and Olympian Rob Hamill is the latest ambassador for the Northland Rescue Helicopter service.

Northland Rescue Chopper General Manager Vanessa Furze says the service is thrilled to have Rob on board.

The announcement comes as the service prepares to celebrate 30 years of saving lives.

“We are so well represented by our ambassadors and they really are very important to helping raise the awareness of our need to raise funds to meet operational shortfalls over the busy summer months,” says Mrs Furze.

Hamill put his hand up to help raise awareness of the need for ongoing public donations after spending many weeks in Northland in recent times getting his catamaran ready for a family sailing adventure to the Pacific Islands and beyond. He knows only too well how life can change in a split second having now lost three of his siblings to varying causes of death over the past 30 years. And after rowing over 4000km across the Atlantic Ocean in 1997, Hamill says he became acutely aware of how vulnerable people can be without help at hand. “I am very privileged to be supporting the Northland Rescue Helicopter service because the work they do is amazing,” says Mr Hamill. “What is particularly impressive is how they work together with St John, the Northland DHB, the emergency services throughout Northland and so many amazing volunteers. It has been said by many people before but you just never know when you might need the service and I am looking forward to taking part in some of the activities during the 2018 fundraising appeal.”

“Those public donations are just as crucial as the sponsorship we receive from Northpower ($100k annually) and Top Energy ($50k annually), plus all of our other sponsors, supporters – and of course the generous funding and ongoing support we receive from the Northland Regional Council.” The Northland Rescue Helicopter Service has flown more than 20,000 missions since 1988 and has been instrumental in saving thousands of lives. Until the end of November, the service will be involved in numerous activities throughout Kaipara and Whangarei to pay tribute to thousands of lives saved, and those lost, since the very first flight on November 17, 1988. Meantime, the service’s fleet of rescue helicopters continue to clock up dozens of flights every month. Back in 2011 the service completed 581 jobs compared to 901 in 2017. The flight tally for 2018 has already reached 718.

Lifestyle Block Services Spring is in the air Spring is here, and that often means certain chores around the property are being taken care of or developments are underway as people start preparing for the year ahead. If you are doing your own property maintenance, it is advisable to have a plan in place and ensure you have the necessary equipment before starting any projects. It will help eliminate many delays, as well as accidents from unsuitable or inferior equipment. Trimming hedges and digging holes are accomplished much easier with sharp equipment. Ensure your tools are up to standard and sharpen your chainsaw and spades to help the process be not just cleaner, but also safer as sharp tools mean easier cuts. Often your local lawnmower and chainsaw supply shop does this type of servicing and when it comes to mulching, engaging a contractor means accomplishing more difficult or larger tasks with ease and in a much quicker time frame compared to doing it yourself.

These experts have the knowledge, equipment and expertise when it comes to activities such as trimming hedges, trees, mulching and other tasks and they can consult with you any ideas you may have. They are also the place to start when looking for ride-on mowers if you are looking to eliminate hours of work on a large section. Wastewater specialists have a variety of options available including ideas to help create a healthy, natural environment whilst discarding waste water. If you desire a composting toilet as an alternative for any reason, these use plant filters enabling the primary treated waste water to be filtered and returned to an aerobic state. By using natural processes using the filtration medium of bark and sawdust, it

Covering your lifestyle

Owning a piece of land in the country is a dream that has become a reality for many people as they find a place to graze a horse or two, run a few chickens, and perhaps raise a few sheep, goats or a cattle beast for the freezer. Many cashed-up city families or retirees are venturing into a new way of life as they embark on a more relaxed future; however, it is important to ensure you have a handle on all processes and business aspects of your property and you have yourself covered from any surprises at the end of the financial year. There are tips on all manner of rural matters available, from looking after a small flock of sheep, getting the most out of a garden, what cattle breed produces good meat, or making sure the right poultry is bought to ensure a good supply of fresh eggs, and which consultants to use. People often say recommendations on who to call or what product to use are often gleaned for neighbours on the land in your area. It is also a way to build friendships and get to know your locals. Local farm suppliers, contractors and the like often can advise on local conditions and the services available as doing it yourself is not always cheaper or efficient in the long run, particularly if you are new to lifestyle living, things are not always as easy as they may seem. While many breadwinners may still commute to work in the city — the object of lifestyle block living should be self-sufficiency as much as is possible. There are farm advisers who can point to tax breaks which may be available and systems to run your property on. They offer advice on what you can and can’t claim and look at company and ownership options — which may result in substantial savings.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

ADVERTORIAL

Chondroitin: Forgotten hero If you use a joint supplement for osteoarthritis, then stop reading and get the bottle and check the amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS) in the daily dose. Most older-style formulas will have up to 20% CS in the formula typically about 200mg in a daily dose. Chondroitin is a structural component of cartilage adding strength and resistance to compression. The study that changed it all for me was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (Wildi et al, 2011) the study title is: Chondroitin sulphate reduces both cartilage volume loss and bone marrow lesions in knee osteoarthritis patients starting as early as six months after initiation of therapy: a randomised, doubleblind, placebo-controlled pilot study using MRI. Eighty people with similar grades of knee OA were chosen. Half the participants were given 800mg of CS as 400mg twice daily for six months. The other group was given a placebo. The two groups were then compared after six months. The group using CS had much less cartilage loss. The next phase then gave all the participants 800mg of CS for another six months. The same results occurred. Those that had been on the placebo showed a reduction in cartilage loss

while the group that had continued with CS now for 12 months continued with much less cartilage loss. As a consequence, I reformulated my joint support formula and lifted CS to the levels used in the study. I also added a potent anti-inflammatory 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Even joints that show signs of degeneration can improve. As an example one man I have been helping noticed significant improvements in mobility and comfort after only a few months and is now even able to ski again. Give me a call or email john@abundant.co.nz if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Guard your vision Macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive disease that affects central vision and is the most common cause of blindness in the Western world. AMD affects one in seven people above the age of 50, but this is increasing, and it is thought that the number of people affected will increase by 70% by 2030 due to an ageing population. There are two types of AMD. 1. Dry is the most common form and causes gradual central vision loss and can progress to the wet form. 2. Wet AMD causes sudden and severe vision loss and is due to the formation of abnormal blood vessels under the retina and needs immediate treatment. If left untreated, this can cause functional blindness within two years. Risk factors Genetics • Those with a family history have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene that predisposes someone to AMD Smoking • Smokers have three times the risk of developing AMD • Smokers will develop AMD 10 years earlier than non-smokers Oxidative Damage • Waste products remaining in the eye and accumulating over time UV Exposure Symptoms • Distorted vision. Especially if straight lines appear bent or curved • Dark patches in central vision • Difficulty recognising faces • Difficulty with your fine vision Prevention • Regular full and thorough eye exams with a reputable optometrist are invaluable • Don’t smoke • Wear UV protection sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses that do not have UV protection will do more harm than good as the pupil widens, letting in more harmful radiation • Choose a protective blue light anti-

glare coating for your glasses • Eat a healthy diet with lots of anti-oxidants • Green leafy vegetables • Berries, fresh fruit • Nuts • Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, albacore tuna) Supplements • Not all supplements are created equal, and not all stages of AMD will respond to supplements • Talk to us about the best supplements to take and when to take them To test at home 1. Test one eye at a time with your reading glasses on 2. Look at the black spot in the centre and take note of all of the lines in the grid 3. Are they straight and even WITHOUT looking away from the central spot? 4. If not give us a call and we will do a full eye exam for you 5. Not all changes are caused by AMD. There can be other things affecting the macula, but all need investigating

John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula with more chondroitin and over double the Curcumin is based on the latest research into joint-support compounds. The normal dose is 2 daily but I recommend a double dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd

The Northland Emergency Services Trust annual fundraiser is underway with the hope of beating last year’s record donations of $307,000 as the trust celebrate 30 years in the air. Principal sponsors Northpower and Top Energy have supported the service since day one with the first patient being transported by the Northland Rescue Helicopter from Kaitaia hospital in November 1988. “Each year Northpower and Top Energy match public donations from the appeal dollar for dollar, up to $150,000. The campaign is packed with community breakfasts, and school visits to chopper rides and a children’s book launch. The story of the Northland Rescue Helicopter choppers Lima and Juliet can be purchased online at nest.org.nz,” says chief pilot and CEO, Peter Turnbull. This year, Mr Turnbull was recognised by the aviation industry for his outstanding dedication, commitment and contribution to the development of the aviation industry. Thousands of people have needed the Northland Rescue Helicopter’s vital service since that first rescue, and from April to August this year the chopper attended 422 rescues, whilst annually more than 900 patients both locals and visitors to the region have been transported. “We also have some exciting updates for our simulator that will take it to the next level. At present we are upgrading the software and avionics. Simulator training is important for our pilots and is significantly cheaper than pilot training

Scenarios that demonstrate weather difficulties including rain, snow, thunderstorms, reduced visibility or mechanical malfunctions such as engine failures — this helps develop our pilots flying techniques and decision-making abilities in a safe environment. Members of the public can purchase vouchers and hire the simulator experience which can be redeemed after December when the upgrade is complete. “We are so appreciative of the willingness of our local community to support us, and we are always looking for new and exciting options for you to

Northland Rescue Helicopter service marks 30 years saving lives The Northland Rescue Helicopter service is preparing to celebrate 30 years in the air as the 2018 fundraising appeal begins. Until the end of November, the service will be involved in numerous activities throughout Kaipara, Whangarei, Mid and Far North to pay tribute to thousands of lives saved, and those lost, since the very first flight from Kaitaia Hospital on November 17, 1988. Last year $307k in public donations was raised and the aim is to raise a similar amount this year due to the increasing operational costs facing the air ambulance service. Northland electricity lines companies Northpower and Top Energy will contribute $100k and $50k respectively to the cause, along with managing the appeal campaign. Northpower Chief Executive Andrew McLeod and Top Energy Chief Executive Russell Shaw believe an air ambulance service is crucial to the wellbeing of Northlanders. Northland Rescue Helicopter Chairman, Paul Ahlers says that local business support is crucial year in, year out, as the service is only partially funded by Government.

“Northpower and Top Energy have been sponsoring us since day one and we could not have got this service off the ground without them. Their support has been critical to us – just as support from other businesses and members of the public has been over three decades,” says Mr Ahlers. “We are also really appreciative of the on-going support we receive from the Northland Regional Council – that backing has been a substantial boost to helping us meet our annual shortfall of costs and key to us being able to afford to upgrade our helicopter fleet which will ensure we can continue to help keep our community safe.” The Northland Rescue Helicopter Service has flown more than 20,000 missions since 1988 and has been instrumental in saving thousands of lives.

Public views sought on whitebait People with an interest in whitebait are invited to share their views on whitebait management in an online survey or at drop-in sessions around the country. The Department of Conservation is holding the drop-in sessions seeking to gather views from a wide range of people and answer their questions about whitebait. “Whitebait are a key part of Kiwi culture. They are taonga to iwi and fishing for whitebait is an important tradition for many New Zealanders,” said Conservation minister, Eugenie Sage. “We also know that whitebait are in decline. Four of the six species that make up the whitebait fishery are threatened or at risk of extinction, and they face

significant pressures — degraded habitats, poor water quality, obstacles to fish passage such as culverts and in some areas heavy fishing pressure. “We must reverse the decline of whitebait and address these pressures if we want healthy whitebait species and a sustainable fishery. DOC is also running an online survey so people can share their observations on the state of whitebait populations in their region and provide their views.” A Whitebait Working Group has been formed involving people with expertise

Lifelong learning benefits Learning never stops, no matter how old you are. It continues throughout our lives whether in the workplace, at home or during leisure activities. Learning helps us to reach our full potential. A study conducted of active adults to determine what impact, if any, learning had on their health found that the greatest benefits experienced from learning were confidence, new friends and contact with other people, direct health benefits and new employment or volunteer work. Unexpected benefits included selfconfidence, personal discoveries, insights into relationships with other people and improvements at work. Community Education Whangarei (CEW) provides a variety of short, low-cost courses designed for adults seeking both professional and personal growth. Classes are held at Kamo High School during the school terms with both evening classes and weekend workshops available. The focus for

CEW is on second-chance learning, to ensure that adults have the opportunity to upskill, and supports the philosophy of ‘education of the whole person throughout their whole life’. Pursuing a career Education is an important start to life in New Zealand, and students are supported to solve problems, process information, work with others, create and innovate from the day they start school, whether it be a public or private institution. Upon leaving high school students hopefully have an idea of the career path they would like to take, whether it be continuing with studies to gain a diploma or taking the opportunity of a hands-on apprenticeship. Guidance counsellors are available at high schools to help students gain direction and discover their possible career choices or interests for the future. Choosing your career path may take time, but with the right direction, you can set yourself up for a positive future no matter who you are and where you come from. For some students, an apprenticeship works best as not everyone achieves well in a classroom environment and those who have a more ‘hands-on’ personality often find their niche learning as they go in a more practical setting.

Apprenticeships are making a comeback, especially with the need for more builders and other vocations needing skilled workers. There are many benefits to being an apprentice in New Zealand. These include earning money as you learn, gaining professional and practical skills as well as one or more level four New Zealand certificates, depending on the programme and industry. As an apprentice, you will have to attend all courses that are part of the apprenticeship, including block courses, evening courses and day release classes. You will complete off-the-job assessments that are part of the Polytechnic or private training establishment courses as well as complete on-the-job evaluations, such as

People more than 16 years of age whom meet the requirements can enrol in an industry that offers New Zealand Apprenticeships so check with the relevant industry training organisation (ITO) to find out more. Apprenticeship fees are generally minimal as courses are subsidised but the best way to find out about them is to talk to your employer or ITO. There may be course-related costs for NZQA

registration, training materials and support from the ITO but at the end of an apprenticeship, you will receive a level four New Zealand certificate in the area you studied, for example, a New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering (Level four). Talk to your high school guidance counsellor, local technical institute or potential employer about the options available or check out the careers.govt. nz website for more information.

Our young excel

by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

No region will be better represented at the national finals of the Young Enterprise Scheme than Northland. Let me repeat that: no region.

It is an extraordinary achievement by our young people, and Northlanders of all ages should be justifiably proud of them. The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) encourages innovation and enhances the business skills of the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs. Year 12 and 13 students create a unique product or service, form a YES business at the start of the school year, and take it to market. It is an extraordinary programme and one that is hotly contested. Historically, our Northland students have done well, but this year they seemed to have exceeded even their high standards. There are no fewer than ten regional winners presented at Waitangi a week ago. Three of them are going on to represent Northland at the national finals in Wellington on December 6. Of special interest to me as a farmer was one of the regional finalists being a team from Hokianga, Hokianga Sustainable Fertiliser, which won the Excellence in Sustainability award. This Panguru Area School group has developed a liquid fertiliser

kenfell@xtra.co.nz manufactured from sea squirts, an invasive marine pest now found locally, which competes with mussels, gradually taking over. Tests showed the fertiliser boosted plant growth by 35 per cent. That is truly extraordinary and one of the best examples I have come across of innovative thinking adding not only something new and productive but also dealing with a known pest. So, if I get back to the purpose of YES — encouraging innovation and

enhancing the business skills of the next generation — it would appear that Northland is well-served in that particular area, now and for the future. I want to congratulate all our regional winners, and for the three teams going to national finals — Whangarei Girls’ High School, Te Kura Taumata o Panguru, and a ‘sole trader’ from Kerikeri High School — I wish you well. You do us proud.

Fertiliser in spring Getting the best bang for your buck out of fertiliser while protecting economic and environmental bottom lines is a key goal for farmers as there is increasing pressure to improve nutrient management because of the effects that nitrogen and phosphorus can have on water. Improving nutrient use efficiency is equally important for farm profitability. “As the soil starts warming up over the next few weeks, farmers will be preparing to fertilise their paddocks,” says sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “Finding that balance is critical and requires advice from fertiliser reps and consultants because healthy soils are a balance of biological, physical and chemical properties, and are a dynamic mixture of minerals, organic residues and living micro and macro-organisms — all of which support farm production and provide various ecosystem services. Nutrient budgeting is accepted as the appropriate first step in managing nutrient use, and it is also the preferred tool for evaluating the environmental impact of farm management practices. Overseer, a computer decision support model, can be used to advise and support nutrient management decisions and greenhouse gas emissions. “Nitrate leaching is another widely talked about issue. Plants need N for healthy leaf growth but is an extremely mobile nutrient. If more nitrogenous fertiliser is applied, plants can take up most but the unused nitrogen ends up leaching through the soil into

groundwater or lost to waterways as runoff, and some is always released back into the air as gas.” The amount of N leaching from pastures can be reduced by — timing fertiliser application to avoid periods when plant uptake of N will be low, such as when soils are saturated, during heavy rain, colder periods and times of low soil temperatures. Applying N fertiliser in as many split dressings as possible, irrigating farm dairy effluent to a large area, adjusting fertiliser policy for effluent irrigated areas to account for the nutrient value of effluent and using fenced wetlands and well-managed open drains as nutrient traps. “The nutrient phosphorus behaves very differently to N because it binds with the soil and dissolves slowly in water over time, it doesn’t readily leach to groundwater but can damage the

health of waterways through soil erosion and surface run-off into water. “The amount of phosphorus runoff can be reduced by keeping Olsen P to optimum agronomic levels. Other tips include following the NZ Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Research Association Code of Practice for Nutrient Management, applying fertiliser when the grass is in an active growing phase, leaving a grassed buffer strip between paddock and waterway — the strip filters the phosphorus before the runoff reaches the water and controlling runoff from tracks, races, feed and stand-off pads. “There are a range of risks when applying fertiliser, and strategies to avoid them. I recommend all farmers have a nutrient budget and management plans for their properties and discuss their situation with their fertiliser rep.”

Velvet prospects sound The 2018–19 velvet market season is expected to be reasonably stable, with consumption in Asia increasing in line with production growth in New Zealand.

Quality Suffolk Rams at Affordable Prices • Try Suffolk Quality Suffolk Rams Bred in Northern NZ

Apart from a brief downward dip in prices two years ago, driven by uncertainty about regulatory changes in China, NZ velvet production and prices have increased for eight years. Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths, cautions that this trend cannot continue forever as there are always unknowns that could upset the market, such as an escalation in the trade war between China and the United States, but based on all the known factors, he says deer farmers can expect another good year. “Major velvet exporters and DINZ are working closely together, building demand with major health food companies in Korea. These companies prefer to deal direct with their NZ suppliers and put high value on price stability. It gives them the confidence to invest in product development,” says Mr Griffiths. Branded health foods based on NZ velvet have transformed the Korean market, and creating a similar product category in China is a priority for the industry. “In contrast, for the commodity traders who still buy two-thirds of NZ velvet, price instability can be a good

Branded health foods based on NZ velvet have transformed the Korean market

thing. Despite good prices, we are putting a lot of energy into building strong relationships with manufacturers and marketers in our major markets. We are taking control of our own destiny and making the commodity traders less relevant.” He says 200 tonnes of the expected 725-tonne 2018–19 harvest will go to health food companies selling high value branded products in South Korea — a market segment that didn’t exist 10 years ago. “Since then, following the lead of the Korean Ginseng Corporation, 30 companies have developed and marketed 73 velvet-based health food products, most of which are enjoying strong consumer demand. Of these, 55 are based on NZ velvet, with the New Zealand provenance strongly promoted.” New Zealand wants to repeat this success story in China, where — along with Australia — it is the only legitimate source of imported velvet. This valuable status is the result of a Regulated Control Scheme for Deer Velvet Harvest implemented by the Ministry for Primary Industries in August 2017, which set stricter on-farm hygiene,

traceability and cool chain standards for velvet. DINZ has been working with Chinese regulatory agencies to provide a clear pathway for imports of NZ velvet to manufacturers in China. “Health food marketers in China are very much aware of the success of velvet-based health foods in Korea, but they want to be sure that the velvet they are buying is legitimate and is available in sufficient quantities at stable prices before they invest the large sums needed to develop and market new products. “It took several years for DINZ and exporters to interest Korean health food manufacturers in developing velvetbased products. It will be the same for China, where DINZ is talking to some firms who are considering whether to take the plunge. “Over the coming years, we expect direct exports to Korean manufacturers to grow, aided by the annual reduction in the Korean tariff on dried NZ velvet. More of the velvet that goes to China will be consumed there, and less of it will be re-exported to Korea.”

Coarse wool breakthrough

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

Years of research to find new uses for coarse wool has resulted in the successful deconstruction of wool fibre to create completely new materials set to revitalise the wool industry. Researchers at Lincoln Agritech Ltd have successfully broken down coarse wool, which comprises of around threequarters of the New Zealand wool clip, into its cellular components, creating new materials that are not wool, but contain wool attributes. The work is part of a $21 million, seven-year research programme into new uses for coarse wool co-funded by the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand and the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment. The work began in 2016 via a WRONZ wholly-owned subsidiary, Wool Industry Research Ltd, led by Dr Garth Carnaby and WRONZ has patented a number of deconstruction methods. “We are delighted that our efforts to find new uses for coarse wool, on behalf of our members, has made significant progress,” said WRONZ chairman, Derrick Milton. “Successfully deconstructing coarse wool to create new materials is a major breakthrough that has the potential to add huge value to the wool industry. Although scale-up and commercialisation is still some way off, WRONZ will work with its membership to maximise value for NZ wool growers and for New Zealand as a whole.”

Currently, coarse wool has limited uses and is mainly used to create wool carpets, a market that is in significant decline due to the growing popularity of synthetic alternatives. That has resulted in lower prices for coarse wool, currently around $3.35 a kilo, and a reduction in sheep farming. Dr Carnaby introduced the new materials to wool industry members at the WRONZ AGM in late October. The materials consist of tiny particles, much smaller than coarse wool and typically in the 5–10 micron range. The smaller ingredients massively open up potential uses for the wool in a wide range of new industries and value chains. WRONZ members cover all aspects of the industry from wool production, wool exporting to scouring and processing into Derrick Milton, Wool Research Organisation of New products. Lead researcher Dr Zealand chairman Rob Kelly from Lincoln Agritech described some of the properties of the new materials and is exploring potential member companies with expertise in uses for the new fibre with WRONZ cosmetics, filters and luxury clothing.

Prior to 2011, the image in most people’s minds of a best-selling Ford ute was one in line with our automotive history down under — you’d likely picture a V8 powered, low-slung muscle machine like those produced by tuning house FPV. All that changed when 2011’s Ford Ranger came on the scene. In retrospect, it was a turning point for the brand in New Zealand — a milestone pointing to an era of dominance.

Now it’s come time to follow-up the ongoing legacy of what has become not just our nation’s favourite utility vehicle, but our top vehicle overall for three years running. Ford is well aware that the only way to go onwards is to go upwards, and so their 2019 Ranger debuts with a smooth new transmission, a new power options and a new, revised look to deliver more presence on the road. New under the hood is the option of a two-litre, twin-turbocharged common rail diesel engine, developing a phenomenal 500Nm of torque for heavy hauling duties and to power the Ranger through rough terrain. With more than 210 horsepower, this compact but mighty engine compares favourably to the established and reliable Duratorq 3.2 litre diesel which remains an option in

of safety and comfort, but their new Sync 3 infotainment system is front and centre in a well-appointed cab, putting everything at your fingertips. While Ford has not rewritten the rulebook on the way the Ranger looks for 2019, it’s a clear update on the style front, with a slightly more aggressive look to complement those extra abilities. Here in the heartland of Ford Ranger country — the Kaipara boasts a predominance of the big ute with the blue oval badge — it all adds up to a generational change worth waiting for. More options, more power, more technology, safety and utility — Ford continue to evolve the benchmark and set the standard for others to aspire to.

With the two-litre twin turbo mated to a seriously smooth tenspeed automatic transmission, the ample power on tap delivers a fresh helping of the car-like ride and road manners which made the original Ranger a hit. Even with the familiar Duratorq, the ride seems lighter, more nimble and more accomplished. Other additions are purely futuristic — tech such as road sign recognition, which displays appropriate road signage in the ute’s display. On the straight and narrow by Andy Bryenton

The tractor is synonymous with farming and has been for more than a century. Certainly, a lot has changed over the decades — from the iron wheeled monsters of the 1900s we’ve seen a steady upward evolution toward computer guided, low emission machines which fulfil a multitude of roles thanks to the many implements they can both transport and power. Moreover, there’s more to that evolution than increased size and versatility in the open field.

innovations. That’s not the real party piece of the Fendt Vario 211 V. No — the real surprise is that this fully featured tractor, packed with technologies usually only found on the behemoths which sow and harrow acres at a time, is only slightly more than one metre wide. That’s a tractor with a fully enclosed and comfy cab, plenty of power and a wealth of options, narrow enough to patrol between the vines without

RI NO ST W M FO A R S

Innovations in other areas of agriculture have seen niche tractors develop which are no less astounding in their specialisation than the great dreadnoughts of the pasturelands. Those who operate orchards and vineyards, those who cultivate hops for brewing or grow stone fruit for preserving — these other primary industries have not been left behind. A prime example of a tractor evolved for this specialist work is the Fendt Vario 2011 V, which scooped a top international award, being named Tractor of the Year in the specialist category at Europe’s famed Agritechnica expo. With a gas-frugal yet powerful three cylinder, 101 horsepower diesel, the little Fendt also offers a host of modern conveniences such as reversible fans for easy blow-back of chaff and dust, optimisation for computer guidance and stepless transmission for smooth operation. There’s the option to add on all manner of useful tools for around the vines and trees, allowing farmers in specialist fields to spray, mow, tidy and even harvest with a full toolbox of

disturbing a leaf out of place. What’s more, it’s stable and easy to drive along with it. No wonder that this achievement netted such a high honour — and that so many farmers in the specialist primary industries are knocking on the doors of Fendt dealers to find out more! Secondary F and P variants are slightly wider, but this slim machine takes the cake when it comes to niche evolution.

Flipping the game by Andy Bryenton

When engineering innovator John Regier sat down to change the way people mow their lawns, he began with the idea of a combine harvester, rendered small. Rather than scaling up a push mower — and in those days we really do mean the old reel-bladed iron monster — he combined elements of farm machinery with the turf care devices deployed on American football fields. Of course, off the football field, you’ll find obstacles like bird baths, garden beds, pathways and shrubs. That means the ability to turn sharply and manoeuvre in tight spots was key to his mower’s success. And success was what awaited the first Hustler mower, spawning generations of big yellow machines for decades to come. Now those first principles have been further defined with the advent of the latest offering from Hustler Mowers — the Raptor Flip-Up. With zero-turn agility, this mower follows closely in the template laid down by John Regier all those years back. You can be impressed by the advancements made all round, from the fingertip sensitivity of the controls through to the power under the hood. That comes from a Kawasaki 23 horsepower overhead cam v-twin motor, air cooled and positioned low in the frame for stability. Of course, it’s the excellent torque from this unit which drivers the triple blades beneath the Hustler Raptor’s 54 inches wide cutting deck, armed with guide wheels to help it float over the turf. Moreover, the real party piece of his

6,990

mower is one that will save both time — and aches and pains! This Raptor, as its name suggests, flips up to allow access to the blades beneath. The entire front of the mower hinges up and away for both ease of
