NEST – Shane Brearley “It is all about getting the patient where they need to go – we often don’t know what is happening with the patient until after the mission is completed.” As one of the newest pilots at Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST) – the organisation that runs the Northland Rescue Choppers – Shane Brearley says it had been a long-time goal of his to fly rescue choppers. So much so, that when the opportunity came up at NEST, he relocated his young family from Australia’s Sunshine Coast to Whangarei, so he could take up the chance to achieve his goal. While many people might think it’s a full action, adventurous job each and every day, Shane says there often can be a lot of waiting around at the base on Western Hills Drive in Whangarei waiting for the next call – and you never know when they might be. “We have a good list of daily and weekly jobs we get through at the base – everything always has to be ready to go as soon as a call comes in,” he says.

Penny Smart, Northland Regional Council chair takes her oath of office in Whangarei

Councillor Smart, a second-term councillor says she is honoured to head the new council, whose members were officially sworn into office in Whangarei on October 29. She was re-elected to council unopposed when nominations for would-be councillors closed in August. Hokianga-Kaikohe constituency representative Justin Blaikie, another second-term councillor who was also re-elected unopposed in August, was elected as the council’s deputy chair. Unlike district councils, whose mayors are chosen by the public through local elections, the regional council’s equivalent, its chair, is voted in by their fellow councillors. The newly-elected council has four new members. Jack Craw — Whangarei Urban, Amy Macdonald — Coastal Central, Marty Robinson — Coastal North and Colin ‘Toss’ Kitchen — Te

Hiku. Councillor Kitchen is currently overseas and has yet to be officially sworn in. With this month’s local body elections also delivering Cr Joce Yeoman — Coastal North, a second term and Cr Macdonald’s election, the council now has three serving women councillors for the first time. The full Nor thland Regional Council as of October 29 is: Kaipara constituency, Penny Smart, council chair. Hokianga-Kaikohe constituency, Justin Blaikie, deputy chair. Coastal Central constituency, Amy Macdonald, Coastal North constituency has two representatives — Marty Robinson and Jocelyn Yeoman. Coastal South constituency, Rick Stolwerk. Te Hiku constituency, Colin ‘Toss’ Kitchen and Whangarei Urban constituency also has two representatives, John Bain and Jack Craw.

Matt King Northland MP And the calls come thick and fast some days. A combination of hospital transfers or a full rescue in the rural reaches of Northland’s rugged landscapes – or a long flight over the ocean to a ship or vessel out at sea – its always an unknown of what lays ahead. No two days are the same, and each and every time the pilots have to ensure the choppers are ready. “It’s always different. Each mission, it is nice to know you are making a difference. You are there as a pilot to transport these people who need help to get where they need to go, whether it’s a hospital transfer for urgent surgery or a full rescue scenario,” he says.

Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal underway As the 2019 Northland Rescue Helicopter annual fundraising appeal gets into gear spokesperson Paul Ahlers says he is looking forward to plenty of community involvement. Until the end of September this year the helicopter has made 702 flights and flown 881 hours. Last year it flew 999 flights with 1397 hours flying time. “There will be a number of community events – three fundraising breakfasts, a fundraising lunch and the launch of the latest children’s book – ‘Cheeky Charlie to the Rescue’ – at three schools around Northland, one each in the Far North, Kaipara and Whangarei Districts,” says Mr Ahlers, Trustee of the Northland Emergency Services Trust and CEO of the Northland Rescue Chopper Service. “We receive tremendous support around Northland at these events and there is such a strong community spirit that shows through. The annual fundraising appeal is really important to us at this time of the year because we are ramping up for our busiest time of year. In fact, this year is already shaping up to be our busiest on record and we know the summer period with the influx of holiday makers will mean demand for our Choppers will be higher than ever. “We appreciate the generosity that Northlanders show towards us every year and we simply couldn’t do what

we do without that additional support and the backing of our many long term sponsors, Northpower, Top Energy and the Northland Regional Council are especially pivotal in that.” Northpower and Top Energy have sponsored the service since it launched back in 1988 and will again match public donations dollar for dollar up to $150k. The Northland Rescue Chopper service is now home to two state of the art air ambulances, one of the largest

aviation projects ever undertaken in Northland. “We have significantly updated our fleet and have advanced avionics at hand and the highest levels of safety. Again, we are looking forward to getting out there in the community over the next couple of months and saying thanks to the people of Northland for their ongoing support.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

RESCUED BY THE CHOPPER by Ann van Engelen For the past four and a half years, Monique Bradley has spent every day being reminded she is lucky to be alive after a horse riding accident at the beach.

N

early five years ago the carefree teenager was with a group of girls riding her horse at Whananaki South when it suddenly suffered the anguish of two broken front legs, throwing her from its back and rolling on her as it hit the ground. “The pain would have been unimaginable however I was knocked unconscious and to this day, remember nothing from the accident,” said Monique. “My memories have been filled in by those who were there, who called for help, and kept me still on the sand while they waited for help to arrive — and help came in the form of the Northland Rescue Helicopter.” The horse was lying beside where Monique had landed and the risk of

it hurting her further was a real one, especially if it got a fright from the chopper. Due to the horse’s condition and the possibility of it getting a fright from the landing helicopter, the chopper landed further down the beach. “All safety precautions were taken, and I was loaded onto a board and taken in the chopper to Whangarei Hospital.” Once she was safely off the beach, her horse had to be euthanised to end its suffering. “On arrival, medical staff determined I had a fractured spine and a brain bleed. I remained unconscious and to this day, my memory only resurfaces about four to five days after the accident. “After one week at Whangarei Hospital, I was transferred to ABI Brain Rehabilitation in Auckland where I

stayed for a month before being finally able to return home.” Back in 2015, Monique had already started university, studying to be a teacher, while also riding horses, doing a bit of modelling and coaching horse riding at a pony club. “Following my accident I suffered from the effects of having a traumatic brain injury. “This meant initially having to learn to walk, communicate and eat again. I struggled with my studies and general wellbeing — each day bringing a

reminder of what had happened and what was now a ‘new normal’. “Almost five years on, I have completed my studies and have just started teaching as a relief teacher, allowing me to ensure my hours are enough to make a living, while not exhausting myself. “For me to be able to achieve my degree, to have graduated last year and to be now teaching, is just amazing. For now, I don’t believe I can teach full time as its too much and takes its toll — I get too tired. I am fortunate to work

two different jobs part time and that still gives me a day off to rest. “I know things could have been a lot different and I am so thankful for the Northland Rescue Helicopters who helped get me to hospital so much easier and quicker. “If I had needed to go to hospital via the road from out there, it would have been very hard to get to me, and would have taken so much longer — with a brain bleed, that could have meant a big difference to my recovery. I know my injuries were survivable, but

it would have thrown in the unknown. These helicopters help save lives. The community is so lucky to have them and in all honesty, we would probably see more deaths if we didn’t have them. It is an amazing, much-needed, necessity for our community. “When you look at Northland’s rugged landscapes, and the time it takes to get to places, that time can make all the difference. Look at me, at my case, and my recovery, that helicopter was necessary to get me to help. I am forever thankful.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Exploring the rose by Ann van Engelen

Roses have a significant place in New Zealand history with many people now specialising in growing the blooms in their home garden.

“I

have personally been growing roses for many years and have more than 600 bushes in my garden. A couple are more than 35 years old and still going strong,” says rose grower Sheree Gare. “Roses began to play a role with our early settlers coming from England in the early 19th century when ‘garden cemeteries’ were popular. Grave plots were fashionably planted with evergreen trees in England to symbolise eternal life. In New Zealand the Sweet Briar rose was planted amongst our dead, commencing as early as 1830 and now the rose, as we know it today, is gaining

back popularity in home gardens. The benefits of gardening are becoming widespread, and it gives me such pleasure to see everyday people gaining happiness from their roses. We get a sense of responsibility from tending plants, and we learn to look after and respect other living things. “Gardening allows us to be nurturers as plants don’t mind who is caring for them. Gardening can improve our mental health by boosting our selfesteem. Some people use gardening as a stress release while others like to socialise at gardening clubs, which are hugely popular today.” Sheree Gare has a collection of more than 600 rose bushes in her garden

A GOOD OPTION FOR NORTHLAND Spring is upon us and with that comes spring fertiliser applications. Phosphate is the most important nutrient in our farming system as it is the plants energy source and helps develop healthy roots. Northland soils, however, are very vulnerable to Phosphate loss. These soils often have a low anion storage capacity which means that the soil has low phosphate binding sites increasing the risk of phosphate fertiliser loss by leaching and runoff. The ‘leaky’ northland soils can potentially lose significant amounts of soluble phosphate. The best way to reduce this risk is by applying a less water – soluble phosphate fertiliser such as Dicalcic or RPR which slowly releases, remaining in the root zone longer therefore reducing the risk of phosphate loss. Traditionally dicalcic has been made by blending 50% Superphosphate with 50% limestone, this results in a phosphate content of 4.5%. This low phosphate content has resulted in a higher application and transportation cost. Together these costs have been the fertiliser co-operative’s biggest bone of contention for its use and probably fair enough.

We offer Design & Build for Bridges including plans, permits, consents and construction.

FERTCO DICAL 12

Over the years, Fertco have designed systems to overcome this issue while retaining the unique features of Dicalcic phosphate and pH neutrality. Fertco produce high analysis Dicalcic products containing either 8% or 12% phosphate therefore dramatically reducing costs of transport and application benefiting both the farm and the environment. Fertco’s high analysis Dicalcic is a great choice as a maintenance fertiliser as it is pH neutral, contains calcium and sulphur, safe to apply with seed and provides a slow, continuous release to better match plant requirements while reducing the impact on the environment.

Sheree says roses like to be pampered and will respond well to regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season. “Rose season starts around the middle of winter, and they start flowering at the end of October and can continue through to April/May. They are resilient plants and can survive for years, the more you pamper, the more they provide beautiful flowers. “Taking care of roses can be as big a task as you want it to be. I believe that growing roses can be compared to raising children. Many people will strongly advise you on how to raise them, but not all ideas suit each family. There are many differing ideas on what to do, how to do it, and when, but these are only guidelines and if you find a way that suits you, then follow it.” Roses are pruned in the winter, generally in July/August, and Sheree suggests ‘DDO’ — Dead, Diseased and Old canes, in that order. “I look at the bush and determine which canes I want to cut first. Any dead canes need to be removed trimming as close to the crown as possible, then the diseased ones. Once I have removed these, I reassess the bush for what is left. As a general rule, I prune about two-thirds off, but if there are not too many newer canes, then I leave some older ones. “A guideline for applying the first application of fertiliser is when the weather is warmer, and the soil

temperatures have increased. Usually mid-September and then after the first flush of flowers and again late January to give the bush a boost to continue flowering. There are many different fertilisers on the market today that are usually differentiated by the NPK status. That means the availability of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. It will usually be written on the bag. The higher the number — the higher the concentration of the nutrient. Mulching with compost or natural animal manure can also be applied to rose beds. “I believe spraying is a personal choice, and today modern roses are being bred for higher health. Building

“Internet today gives us so much information and a particularly good web page Helpmefind gives vast information on different rose varieties available including breeders, genetics and growing habits. “Rosarians across the country like to show their blooms and each year in November there are many rose shows held across the country. At these events many growers present their best blooms and enter into floral art classes such as baskets of roses and other novelty classes. “New Zealand has a great climate and we are lucky to grow some of the best roses in the world.”

up the soil’s health and providing good nutrients and humus in the soil helps eliminate spraying needs. “I deadhead the spent flowers once roses have had their first flush by cutting off the flower at a five leafed set of leaves. It encourages growth and produces further blooms. “This practice can continue until midMarch, and then I let the bush rest over winter, before commencing the growing cycle again. “Beware of rabbits and possums as they can annihilate the roses and eat the new shoots and chew the tops off the roses. To combat them find a pest control system that suits your situation.

“T

oggenburgs are a hardy animal and the oldest dairy breed, which originated in the Toggenburg Valley in Switzerland. Some are short-coated, and others have long shaggy coats, which is very endearing about them,” says Stephanie. “They are a beautiful goat, and ours are a variety of colours and varying shades including chocolate brown with white markings and caramels.” The Broomes, along with goat farmers Teresa Atkins and Sonia Gibbons recently reinstated the Far North Goat Club to bring people with an interest in goats together. “We are based in Whangarei and have members as far north as Kaitaia

and south to Auckland. Sonia breeds Toggenburg, Alpine and Sable dairy goats and Teresa farms Nubians and makes a variety of products including soap and skin lotions from the milk. We have spent several months getting the club back up and will be at the Whangarei A&P Show so people can come along and see us. “Royce was given our original goats when he worked on a farm, and we decided to get into dairy goats on a serious level. We still have our adorable Queen Bee — she is now nine years old. We think her breed is the best and contacted the breeders association and were able to buy a buck from Napier. in nutrients and lower in lactose than cow’s milk. Goat milk is the closest to human breast milk and is easy on our digestive systems. Our son had eczema and Royce has asthma, and they do well on goat’s milk. It is good for raising orphan animals such as foals, lambs, piglets, kittens and puppies because it is not rich. “Goats are versatile but can be challenging at the same time. They are very good at cleaning up pasture but can be sensitive to worms, so regular drenching is important, as is hoof care. Grass is their least favourite food, they are very good at cleaning up gorse, and they also like privet, carrot weed, hay and blackberry. Clovers aren’t so good for them, and they prefer longer grasses, they are not designed to eat short grass, that is where they get worms. “We have a milking solutions machine and can milk cows and goats because it has an adjustable vacuum and pulsator setting. Cows require more vacuum and a slower pulse while goats have less vacuum and a faster pulse.” The life expectancy can be up to 16 years. “Queen Bee is still one of our top milk producers giving around four and a half litres per day. We milk from August to April in our covered yard, and we are mostly off-grid and are developing a solar or hydropower system to go totally off-grid. We call ourselves the geriatric hippies and our garden is home to chooks, so we have milk, honey and eggs flowing freely. The Far North Goat Club is affiliated to the NZ Dairy Goat

What’s up with turmeric? by John Arts

My motorcycle tour in India in a few years ago was a feast for my senses including, of course, my taste buds. Most curry recipes contain the brilliant yellow spice turmeric. It has been a mainstay of Indian Ayurvedic medicine where it is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-supporting qualities. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. I have many clients who have benefitted from curcumin often to calm tissue affected by inflammation. One client had a troublesome Baker’s cyst behind his knee. Taking my Curcumin product has greatly reduced swelling and discomfort. A study titled Curcumin: a new paradigm and therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of osteoarthritis (Henrotin, 2013) investigated the application of curcumin in osteoarthritis. The study concluded, “curcumin represents a new paradigm since it is not yet a recommended intervention in osteoarthritis but should be considered based on its safety and efficacy.” The study outlines the impact of curcumin on anti-inflammatory pathways, including inhibiting

inflammatory enzyme COX-2. This is the target of most anti-inflammatory drugs, and while effective, these come with a range of often side effects. I use a standardised extract of 95% curcumin extract and have created a proprietary blend to improve curcumin absorption into damaged joints and tissue. The normal daily dose of two capsules daily gives 1,000mg of this high potency extract. This is equivalent to about a tablespoon of raw turmeric. This is especially effective when combined with high potency grape seed extract. I use curcumin mostly for joint support and wherever tissue is affected by inflammation. Contact me for an email copy of my Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Pledges for Biosecurity Businesses, which sign up to the Biosecurity Pledge 2019 are underlining a commitment to go the extra mile to protect our environment and economy from diseases, pests and hazardous organisms. “It is one thing to tick all the boxes in terms of meeting all the regulatory requirements. That should by now be standard practice,” says Federated Farmers biosecurity spokesperson Karen Williams. “The Pledge campaign, supported by Federated Farmers and 10 other farmer and grower organisations, is about businesses actively looking for ways to cut out potential risks to protect not just their own interests, but those of their peers, the wider community and our little slice of paradise at the bottom of the world. “That might include investigating even more robust biosecurity safeguards and systems, better training of staff on what they need to do and watch out for, or putting in place extra steps when importing machinery, seed or the like. The costs of the Mycoplasma bovis incursion alone have now easily topped $200 million, never mind the heartbreak to affected farming families.” Pest plants and insects such as blackgrass, pea weevil and velvetleaf have also cost millions of dollars. “In the Wairarapa, farmers and home gardeners are coming up to four years of not being able to grow peas. The pea weevil incursion has seen a contracting business fold, a vegetable

seed processing plant close down and the government stumping up with compensation for growers. “The company that imported the pea seed that allegedly contained the weevil met all import health standards at that time. However, it was importing product from a part of the United States where pea weevil was prevalent. “Growers, importers, in fact, all of us — have legal obligations regarding biosecurity. The Biosecurity Business Pledge 2019 adds another layer, emphasising our moral obligation to be good citizens. It takes all of us to protect what we have got.” Horticulture New Zealand, which represents the interests of more than 5,000 fruit and vegetable growers, has signed up to the Biosecurity Business Pledge. “The pledge is all about businesses working with industry and government to prevent pests and diseases entering New Zealand that could severely affect our economy and the Kiwi way of life,” says HortNZ president, Barry O’Neil. “New Zealand exports fruit and vegetables to 128 different markets. These exports were worth $3.6 billion in 2018 and are steadily growing.” For more information go to thisisus. nz.

A future on the land Living off the land is all very well, in theory, but in practice, no matter how lush your garden, how healthy your animals and how efficient your home is, you’re still going to need some money coming in to pay the bills. Maria Lempriere is well aware of that so to make sure she does everything she can to make her lifestyle choice a success. She completed the free, 36-week Certificate in Small Business programme at Te Wananga o Aotearoa. She says it provided real benefits for her plans for a productive and profitable life at Peihana Farm, her four-hectare, off-grid, north Taranaki lifestyle block. “It really helped me put my business case together,” she says. “It helped identify the different revenue streams we should focus on so we can live off the land. I have to be clever about what I do.” When she’s not working on the land, Maria sells her produce, seedlings and herbs at the micro-market in nearby Urenui on a Saturday morning, produces small quantities of beef and pork, and to bring in some all-important revenue, she hosts workshops to teach people the skills they need to live a more sustainable lifestyle. She also offers her garden to table catering services using produce she has grown. One of her clients is the Corner Cafe in nearby Urenui, and she is passionate about creating nourishing, well-presented food for service each day. “My workshops are mainly food-related, although last week we had harakeke weaving. I enjoy inviting people with traditional food-

making skills to present and share their knowledge. This is really what we hope for Peihana Farm — to be a micro-centre of education teaching people the essentials of living off the land,” Maria says. “We’ve done a real range of topics sausage making, cheesemaking, bread making, medicinal plants, pruning, foraging, mushroom growing, beekeeping, garden to table meals and smoking/ curing meats.” There have also been workshops on natural basketmaking, soap making and Maria is keen to include fermenting workshops in the coming year along with brewing, making cleaning products and basic cooking skills to improve the resilience of our local community. By summer, she is aiming to open the property to the public more regularly so that those who are seeking a simpler way of life can ask questions and see some of the infrastructures in a working environment. Maria says, along with helping her identify potential revenue streams, the Certificate in

Maria Lempriere Small Business programme also helped her focus on the realities of running a small business. “It made me face some of those topics that I don’t like, the legal side of things, insurances and some of the compliance stuff.” A friend had suggested she do the course and she has since recommended it to others. “The people are so lovely. Everything, the whole experience was charming and really important in my journey.”

Lifelong education for longer lives by Andy Bryenton

We all know that a brain that is well used is less likely to deteriorate. Studies from around the world have shown that older folks who are active and engage in social activities, creative pursuits, puzzles and even video games are less likely to succumb to the vicissitudes of dementia. There’s even more good news on this topic when you go deeper. Harvard University, the respected seat of education and research, has recently published a study that suggests that life long learning is the key to a longer cognitive life. The more formalised that learning, the more the brain shows a propensity to grow new cells, even in older test subjects. “When you exercise, you engage your muscles to help improve overall health,” says Dr Ipsit Vahia, director of geriatric outpatient services for Harvardaffiliated McLean Hospital. “The same concept applies to the brain. You need to exercise it with new challenges to keep it healthy.” The doctor, who headed up a team researching the impact of education

on brain development, notes that more than 17 per cent of Americans in middle age or older are back in class, and that this formal environment (with a teacher, books, tests and a curriculum) may kickstart neural regrowth by hearkening back to childhood. We could, in short, program ourselves to learn when we’re young, and have those ‘circuits’ waiting to stimulate brain health in later life. “It does not have to be a traditional academic course either,” he adds. “It can be about learning new skills, like speaking a foreign language, learning how to paint or to play a musical instrument. You can even study how to improve current ones like fixing a car or becoming more computer-savvy.” The findings back up research in the Annals of Neurology magazine, which

took a closer look at the advantages of learning a new language, and found that multilingual people have better brain health in their old age; another reason it might be a good idea to teach Te Reo Maori in schools. Then there’s the other advantage of attending classes in your middle age or

later and meeting like-minded people. “It is easy to become more socially isolated as people grow older,” says Dr Vahia. “A class makes you interact and communicate with other people on a regular basis through group participation, conversations and discussions.”

Has the term ‘primary industry’ lost its meaning? by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Todd Muller is one of those people in the National Party ranks who this country needs desperately as a minister. Todd is the MP for the Bay of Plenty and National Party spokesperson for Agriculture, Forestry, Biosecurity and Food Safety. I have worked closely with Todd during my first two years in parliament as National’s Spokesperson for Rural Communities. What struck me about him is the firm grasp he has on his portfolios. He knows them inside out. That is a marked contrast with the present Minister of Agriculture and in fact, the entire coalition government, which tampers and even threatens the industry. Which begs the question: do they even understand it? How else could we explain the illconceived intent to include agriculture in the Emissions Trading Scheme, which would have been disastrous. Then there were the carbon offsets for pine trees causing all kinds of market distortions allowing foresters to outbid pastoral farmers — and then to compound that by allowing an overseas buyer free rein to buy up valuable pastoral land and convert it to forestry.

Has the term ‘primary industry’ lost its meaning for this government? That is why I say the country desperately needs Todd Muller to manage one of its most important ministerial portfolios. It is Todd who is out there every day providing insight and support for farmers, and pragmatic solutions to the challenges facing our rural communities. Of course, it helps that he was raised in a rural community and has an easy rapport with farmers. They like him and more importantly, they like what they hear from him. This month you’ll have the chance to hear that for yourself when Todd and I host three public meetings in Northland. You are very welcome to attend any of these meetings and listen to what the next (and real) Minister of Agriculture has to say about the issues affecting us. Wellsford Community Centre, 10.30am, Wednesday, November 27; Dargaville RSA, 2.30pm, Wednesday, November 27; Kerikeri, The Turner Centre,10.30am, Thursday, November 28.

Future of low emissions Forestry Minister Shane Jones has said trees can play a lead role in New Zealand’s transition to a low emissions economy. “This is reflected in a new request for research into innovative ways to use wood fibre,” he said at the blessing of the new government forestry hub site in Rotorua. Te Uru Rakau (Forestry New Zealand), the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group have issued a ‘request for proposal’, worth $250,000 to $300,000, seeking a commercially-oriented report on viable opportunities for investment in bio-based products and bio-refinery processing technology. These investments must use wood and wood fibre and be internationally competitive. “We know about the ability of trees to absorb carbon, and we have invested heavily in rapidly strengthening our forestry estate through initiatives such as the One Billion Trees programme and recent changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme. These forests will act as a carbon sink in the short-tomedium term,” said Mr Jones. “They are also vital to increasing wood and fibre supply over the next 20 to 30 years as we position our forestry system, or parts of this system, to

Pay attention!

manufacture a wide range of products that will help us adapt to climate change and meet our emissions target. We know that consumers want alternatives to concrete, steel and plastic. “In theory, everything that can be made from oil or non-renewable resources can be made from trees. The big question is one of commercial viability and how the big ideas can be made into reality.” Many countries have examined options for future reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and defined a bio-economy solution in which forests and forest products play a significant role. “Through this call for research, I would like to see a report that will identify investible opportunities for the production and manufacturing of high value, wood fibre-based bioproducts that will bring innovation and employment to our regions, and increase onshore processing of logs. “I am excited to see the opportunities that emerge and will help establish forestry as the cornerstone of our future economy.”

With the summer season fast approaching, many families are considering adding a swimming pool to their property for family fun and entertaining friends. Swimming pools are a good way to get that much-needed relaxation or exercise after a hard day’s work, and they also add a new dimension aesthetically to a garden or yard. No matter what type of pool you are considering it is important to know that there are specific rules covering swimming pool creation and installation including excavation of the land, structure of the pool and the product that is used to create it. Regardless if it is for spa, swimming or paddling pools, these rules refer to anything that can be defined as a swimming pool. There are legal obligations the owner, and people in

control of the swimming pool must abide by and the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 was repealed, on January 1, 2017, by section 19 of the Building (Pools) Amendment Act 2016 (2016 No 71). The act exists to help protect people, including the young and elderly from the danger of drowning and requires owners to fence their pools, along with knowing other rules and requirements. The act information covers doors and walls to buildings adjoining the pool, gates, fence height requirements, ground clearance and materials used and all pools must comply with the act, whether old or new. All pool fencing requires a building consent, including that around spa pools, and some require consent for the construction of the pool itself. Information can be found on building consents at your local council, or your pool specialist should have this available.

Swimming pool fences must only surround the pool and the area immediately around it. The area must only include things used in association with the pool, for example, changing sheds. It must not include things not related to the pool such as clotheslines, children’s playground equipment or vegetable gardens. Buildings and boundary fences may form part of the pool fence provided they comply and meet the requirements of the act. There are also rules for indoor pools. Remember, safety is a priority as accidents happen in a split second and having your swimming pool, no matter what type, how big or small, being aware and knowing the rules is essential. Your local pool specialist can help with pool design options, installation and regulation advice. Information on the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 can also be found on the legislation.govt.nz website.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Solar wave cresting higher

DARGAVILLE – MANGAWHAI – WHANGAREI

by Andy Bryenton

Solar power has been talked about in terms of the future since the 1960s, but the message here and now is clear — it’s coming into its own as mainstream uptake increases. Just like the automobile, mass demand has begun to demand mass supply, and that means mass investment in massive new leaps forward. The first thing solar suppliers want you to know is that today’s solar power is not the weaker, less useful system from those early years. It’s already a viable solution to get off the grid, to supply energy to far-flung areas, and to augment existing systems for both economic and ecological reasons. Using that car analogy again there’s research and development in the works, which will crank the power up to Formula One levels. There are three core components to a solar system, and all three have been the subject of vast pushes in research. Take, for example, the University of Toronto, Canada, where scientists have developed new, tiny light-sensitive particles called colloidal quantum dots. These are a breakthrough, as semiconductors of this kind could not be used outside the lab before. This one innovation could add a healthy eight per cent boost to solar panels’ efficiency. British researchers have high hopes for gallium arsenide, a material, which could make existing photovoltaic systems three times more efficient. A solar unit is nothing without its batteries, and the best news here is that an arms race of battery tech has broken out in the field of electric vehicles. Batteries have become smaller and more capacious, as evidenced by the rise of drones, e-scooters and e-bikes

as well as cars like Tesla’s Model X and BMW’s i8. Research is ongoing into incorporating batteries into the solar panel itself for more efficient production and compact deployment, as well as the use of molten inorganic salts to store energy. Better battery controllers are also now available, increasing the lifetime and efficiency of storage systems. The future looks exceptionally bright for solar power, but why wait? Systems that can save you money and also contribute to saving the planet are out there now. It’s no longer a case of being an early adopter — it’s a case of not being left behind.

Security takes flight by Andy Bryenton

If you thought that unmanned aerial recon vehicles were something from a spy thriller or the latest military conflict, you’d be correct. Little drones with a powerful camera that can support facial-recognition programs and adapt to their environment so as not to waste time buzzing around the good guys are out there in the field. Now they’re out there on rooftops in suburbia, too. The issue with static camera systems is that they record all the time, they can’t get the right angle to identify hooded or heavily clothed burglars, and they can be ‘cased out’ and eliminated with a dab of spray paint by truly determined thieves. Not so the Sunflower Labs ‘bee’ system, which takes drone technology and sensor lighting to a new level. The system, developed by an American company made up of software geniuses, and electrical engineering inventors situates many small garden lights around the property, linked to a central computer called ’The Hive’. The James Bond trickery begins when these sensors begin to learn the routines of the household, identifying the difference between cars, pets and people — so they know when it’s a stranger calling instead of one of the family. and motion sensors light up the ‘sunflowers’ around the activity. If it really is an intruder, the next phase is deployed. The ‘Bee’ is an advanced drone quadcopter, which flies by ultrasonics like a bat. It is designed to autonomously avoid obstacles and acquire good, crisp footage of the face of whoever has come unexpectedly calling, without filming neighbouring properties to preserve the privacy of others. Of course, the scene is well-lit by the sunflower lamps all around. Imagine

the shock of trying to stealthily enter a home when you are confronted by a flying high-definition camera. That’s quite a deterrent! When it’s done, the Bee goes back to its Hive to recharge and upload video. While the system is still in its final testing stages, there’s a buzz about this robotic bee and its implications for home security. Hundreds of people have already signed up to install a Sunflower system as soon as it’s green-lit, and it won’t be long before it comes to New Zealand, we’re sure.

Hill Country Contractors Alister Biggs and his team at Hill Country Contractors are available for all your fencing, weed and pest control requirements including horse arena maintenance. “We are available to help with agricultural or residential fencing, and retaining walls of all types and sizes. We can create stockyards including round pens and horse arenas,” says Alister. “For pest plant control we have a spray truck with two reels working for all your gorse, blackberry and other pest weeds. We are also up to date with the health and safety requirements for our projects. “I was away from the north for eight years living in Wairoa where I had a wild animal control company and worked in vast bush areas doing jobs such as culling and mustering goats, fencing and spraying. After having a young family, we moved back to the north. I have my own horses and breed them, so I understand the needs people have for arenas and round pens.” Alister can help with pest control for wild pigs and possums as well as weed wiping and scrub cutting, tree clearing and all types of agricultural pruning for avocado, macadamia and all types of fruit trees, using specialised pole pruning when necessary. “We are a reliable team of five hardworking, experienced locals with genuine references available. Being a farmer in Northland myself, I understand what a farmer needs and will get as much done as possible giving value for money. We have good quality, new equipment and work professionally for all clients. “Our team are based in the Umawera Okaihau area and will travel for the right

STAY AFLOAT job. Now is the perfect time to spray blackberry and gorse as the tractors and trucks can get good access before the bushes get away in growth. It is also the time to get your fences checked, and our pruning is in full swing in preparation for the upcoming growing season. “I enjoy hunting, training dogs and horses, diving, fishing and appreciate all aspects of rural life. I enjoy the fact that we

can free up time for farmers with fencing, spraying, scrub cutting and maintenance work that you may not get the chance to do, so they are able to carry on with other farm jobs. “I believe a company is only as good as the staff you have, and I trust my team. They do a good job, and that is important to me. I believe locals helping locals always gives a good outcome.”

Creating outdoor entertaining areas Based in Whangarei, ex-Northland rugby player Tim Dow owns The Outdoor Room Company. “Most outdoor spaces don’t get used because they are too hot in summer and too wet in winter,” says Tim. “Up until now, solutions to this have looked like tacky add-ons. We create stylish outdoor rooms with modern roof and blind options that enable you and your family to enjoy the space at any time, in any weather.” As a rugby player for Northland for some 11 years, Tim understands the importance of supporting local and the positive effects being outdoors has on people. “We live in Northland for the lifestyle, but at times we are trapped inside, hiding from the wet in winter and seeking the shade in summer — this is no way to live. There are two problems that we find — people are not using outdoor areas because they are too wet in winter and too hot in summer. Traditional pergolas are of little use as we need a solid roof for the wet and for shade. The second was that the common

solutions people found were not achieving what they need for the space to be relaxing. For many years we have built roofs with corrugated plastic. The result is a line of grime in every valley of the roofing and a shape or connection to the house and finishing detail that simply becomes an ugly addon. Once the rain stops, and the sun comes out, it is like being in a sauna. “The Outdoor Room Company has taken a look at different products from around the world and made a commitment to bring the best to New Zealand so Kiwis can enjoy their outdoor living spaces. Not only must they withstand the elements — they must have an exceptionally sharp aesthetic — no more ugly add-ons. We offer a variety of options to create beautiful and functional outdoor spaces, including louvre or flat roofs and outdoor blinds. All roof options are custom made to the house and have detailed finishing, so they tie into the house design and complement it — not detract from it. “Right now we are helping lots of people get one in time for Christmas, so they get the best from it this summer. Let’s

enjoy this summer, it is going to be hot, but we can still love it. I look forward to helping sort your outdoor living space.” For more information call 0800 428 855 or email sales@ theoutdoorroomcompany.co.nz.

2020’s kitchen rules by Andy Bryenton

It’s life imitating art imitating ‘reality’ in this year’s hot kitchen design trends, which expand on the re-definition of the kitchen, not as an austere workspace designed to nickel-and-dime your house price for the next occupant but to be the palette from which you can create culinary soul. The old, stark white and stainless kitchen is out, according to US interior designers and the latest home renovation periodicals. Inspiration for the new year’s look has come from the plethora of kitchen and cooking-themed reality shows and game shows, which dominate broadcast prime time. With top chefs espousing their philosophy of cooking as an artistic process, it’s becoming less about putting three veg and a chop in front of the family at nights, than it is about having a space in which to be happy and creative. Hence colour is back in the kitchen, with coloured cabinetry or cupboard doors an easy fix to brighten up space. Natural wood is back, with wood panel flooring for wet areas now a very viable

and affordable technology to replace vinyl. Touches like bay windows with edible herbs planted in terracotta pots point to another big trend — the visible pantry. Increasingly, the provisions that stock a kitchen are as important in terms of the aesthetic as the appliances. So while exposed industrial-style tapware in gunmetal, brass, copper and pewter is big — glass-fronted fridges and open shelves are bigger. It’s ostensibly about being able to see just where everything is as you piece together a gourmet dinner, but the added bonus is that your friends and guests will be able to see the fine cheeses, fresh veggies, lovely cuts of meat and aromatic, exotic spices on display. The kitchen is no longer about hiding ingredients, but about proudly

displaying the fact that you have things like preserved Greek lemons, crushed almonds and wasabi aioli at hand. The final new addition to the modern kitchen is less inspired by reality telly and more practical, however. Three-D printing technology has now given tile

designers the opportunity to recreate large-scale slabs of ‘marble’ out of ceramics. The time has come when a gigantic marble-look benchtop can be fitted without fear of those preserved lemons turning it to a pitted mess.

An award carved in stone by Andy Bryenton

A company at the foundations and fundamentals of many Northland projects has won a major prize in the Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards. Bellingham Quarries, who have operated from the Kaitaia region since 1937, took home the award for best medium-sized business and were runners up for customer service. The family-run company have ten quarries in all and have established a reputation for supporting local charities, clubs, sports teams and schools as well as a reputation for handling heavy rock. As the awards judges say: “Bellingham Quarries Ltd is a successful thirdgeneration Northland family business. Their entry and the judges’ visit showed clearly how well they juggle multiple sites, ever-changing customer demand, new industry requirements and volatile

pricing with a clear vision and ruthless pragmatism. Their encouragement and support of staff coming up through the ranks and the excellent use of available data were impressive features of their entry, taking them to a welldeserved win.” It’s a great legacy for Bellingham’s founder, Ted, who began the business with his two sons as a gumdigging operation in Mangawhai, on the Kaipara’s East Coast. The trio deployed a

dragline shovel, the height of technology in the 1920s, and expertise with this heavy machine paid off when the Great Depression hit, and the family took to roading. Through arduous trials, hand drilling and blasting whole hillsides, they learned the hard way about how to handle rock. You could say they learned quarrying the toughest way of all! However, it all paid off as the family workshopped their new skills and established lime crushing works

for agriculture, including one in Kaitaia. From this base, Bellingham Quarries has grown into a business well respected across the north. This latest award is another jewel in the crown for the successful ‘hard rock band’ from the top of the nation. There’s little doubt that the Bellingham team will rest on their laurels; there’s a big demand for their services out there, and nearly 100 years of expertise on offer to their customers.

Gadget overload helps no one It’s called ‘well-meaning junk’ in English, but the Japanese have their own word for the plethora of new gadgets and knick-knacks designed just for the older person. They call this proliferation of usually needless but will-intentioned rubbish ‘chindogu koreisha’ or ‘pointless products for our elders’. ambulances when they were kicked off carelessly after a long day of walking. It doesn’t stop there. Whole catalogues regularly come to the homes of older folks promoting devices to electrically remove jar lids, glow in the dark toilet paper; even a bath mat that changes colour to help older folks remember that they have taken a shower. Wellmeaning, perhaps. A little insulting, in some instances, to seniors still in command of all their wits and faculties. Also, a far cry from what does work and does sell. That’s the new wave of useful devices for older people designed by and for older people. Included in this category are nearly invisible new hearing aids, voice-activated appliances, easier to use apps making technology more accessible and a swathe of new devices, which are lighter and easier to use than the previous generation, allowing older people the freedom to maintain their own

DENTURE CARE

For some of these products, you can blame health and safety gone over the top. Take for example the anti-hip fall belt, which adds gigantic airbag balloons to a structure like a skydiver’s harness, giving your gran or grandpa the profile of a circus clown. Indeed, if they fall over, it might cushion their fragile hip joints to an extent. The trade-off, of course, is looking idiotic all the rest of the time. It was soundly rejected by active seniors. Then there are items that seem a good idea at the time, such as a watch, which displays an image of the correct coloured pill to take at any given hour for dementia patients or those with memory loss; shoes, that automatically Bluetooth to a cell phone and call an ambulance if the wearer falls over. The problem is, people with memory loss often stop associating the image on the watch with taking their medication. The shoes called a whole lot of needless

good ones are made by older people themselves, who know what they want and need.

From the farm to the heart of town Long-time Rodney local resident, Rosalie Bradnam, has seen many changes in the Warkworth area, among them the construction and opening of her new home — the retirement complex in the heart of the town centre of Warkworth. Nestling in the centre of the local community, The Oaks on Neville apartments are more about lifestyle than retirement living. Being in the heart of the town was one of the main contributing factors for Rosalie when she started looking for somewhere to move to when retiring from farm life. “A big factor for me is the location, so when I can’t drive everything is here. Another factor was the old Warkworth Hotel still being here, and it’s like coming home,” said Rosalie. “When I first saw the apartments I thought they were very nice, and since I’ve been here, everything has lived up to my expectations. When I first moved in, people said I’d never be able to cope after being on the farm for so long. I told them it’s lovely — there’s no mud, no fixing things, no maintenance and all the other stuff that comes with living on a farm. Everyone is so very friendly, and there’s a lot to do here. “Now if something goes wrong, you just have to tell someone, and it’s sorted out. I had a builder friend who visited from Australia, and he said they were very well built.” Moving into her new apartment earlier this year bought back a few fond

memories for Rosalie. As a teenager, she used to work at the hotel, which is undergoing restoration and will become an integral part of The Oaks on Neville. “Change is good, but you need to keep a bit of community history. The old hotel played a part in my life when I first moved back to the area from Auckland. I came back to Glorit, to help my Mum. I met my future husband, Ted, a rugby player at a rugby prize-giving.

This fellow starting talking to me and at first I thought if this is what country boys are like I’m going back to town [Auckland]. A couple of years later I started going out with him and got married in 1961,” said Rosalie. Living at The Oaks on Neville opens the door to the Mahurangi, Matakana Coast, Omaha and Tawharanui regions with beaches, walkways, cycleways, nature reserves, vineyards and more.

For those who enjoy a more resortstyle of living, The Oaks on Neville has an indoor pool, spa, gym, sauna, welcoming lounge, library and cafe. Central apartment living means the conveniences of village life are right at your doorstep; cafes, shops, recreational sport and services all within easy walking distance, and of course, the convenience of lock and leave. It’s all here — so just go live it!

Exclusive retirement in the heart of Warkworth Are you ready for a new lease of life? Do you want everything you need on your doorstep? Our new, spacious and quality apartments all have designer kitchens including excellent appliances. Resort facilities include an indoor pool, spa, gym, sauna, welcoming lounge, library and cafe. With 1, 2 or 3 bedroom apartments priced from only $495,000 it’s time to get very excited. Lock and leave, care free, no maintenance lifestyle — an attractive option for over 60s.

Independence through technology by Andy Bryenton

As our population demographics edge upward, one of the concerns we face as a society is where to accommodate the influx of older people in our communities. While on the facing page, we’ve discussed some of the flawed ideas meant to help seniors, here are some which are a natural fit. Survey after survey shows that not only is independence popular, it’s also positive in terms of self-esteem and mental health. The necessity of keeping active when maintaining a home is also a plus. While assisted living care is a vital facet of our eldercare strategy as a nation, increasingly a combination of good design and modern appliances will make the upkeep of a well-thought-out small home so easy that independence is a viable choice well into a person’s elder years. The first level of this form of thinking involves the natural ‘product evolution’ of tools and appliances. Electric outdoor tools are becoming so small and light that chainsawing up firewood is now back in the realm of possibilities for older folks, for example, and this has a knock-on effect when it comes to winter fuel bills. Robotic mowers and vacuum cleaners, safer, more stable ride-ons, and the end of once necessary chores like ironing all play a part. It’s not as if

older folks don’t ‘get’ technology. It’s often, that they reject things that seem clever for the sake of being complex, and aren’t really that useful! Voice-activated systems like Siri and Alexa, refrigerators that order grocery items to be delivered weekly, and of course, mobility aids with more range and power are also making things easier. The rise of e-bikes for older users provides a stepping stone between the need to drive a car, and the ability to get out into the neighbourhood, exercise and meet friends in a way seen as more youthful than a mobility scooter. Then there are technologies emerging that help to multiply the coverage of inhome carers. Sensors, which can tell if medications need topping up with a visit to the pharmacy or doctor. Video calls to check-in. Even new, healthier delivery meal options or delivery food boxes play a part. Medicine and healthcare continue to advance, meaning we may be living

Love the Lifestyle

into our hundreds soon enough. The lesson is to let emerging technologies

meet the needs of our elder citizens by listening to what they really want.

Pay attention! around road works

by Andy Bryenton

We’re enjoined to ask where we’d be without our gumboots by the famous Fred Dagg song, but where would New Zealand be without Henry Bessemer? The ‘father of modern steel’ is also the man who made fencing wire possible, and as such, he’s an unsung hero of our farmlands. Bessemer lived in the height of the industrial revolution, in the era when steam and steel ruled the waves, made empires and meant big, big money. The kind of wire old steelmaking processes produced was short runs of thick and brittle stock; not much use for fencing the miles and miles of open land to be found in the new colonies of New Zealand and Australia. Bessemer invented a new kind of furnace, which blew oxygen through ‘pig iron’ while it was liquid hot, blasting away impurities and making inexpensive steel. The result was perfect for ‘ductile’ use; it could be coiled out into massive long runs of wire. There was no way New Zealand was ignoring this innovation. Bessemer kicked production into high gear in the mid-1850s, and by 1866 John Grigg of Ashburton called for tenders for 20

The ULTIMATE fencing tool  Using Batten King takes less than one minute per batten or just a few seconds using a staple gun. It is a one man operation saving time and halving labour.  The batten is held in place by one wire allowing staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner.  It works as a dolly whilst stapling providing a firm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun.  Batten King is a safer way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the batten in place while stapling. This eliminates the risk of injury via jarring or accidentally hitting hands with a hammer.  Every fencing contractor I have spoken to has purchased one on the spot.  I also do fertiliser and animal health programmes.

miles (32 kilometres) of wire fencing. Orari Gorge Station had 48 kilometres of fencing up by 1871 and had doubled that by 1874. Moa Flat Station, between Dunedin and Alexandra, had 402 kilometres of wire fencing by 1879. Number eight wire had landed, and using it in innovative ways made this product a byword for ingenuity. Fencing has been a vital activity for farmers here since the introduction of livestock, thanks to the wily and persistent nature of sheep themselves. Today, fencing contractors don’t have to rely on products such as the pre-

rolled, iron-battened ‘colonial sheep fence’, which was shipped here from Sheffield, England in pioneering times. A tried and true method evolved in the 1960s with the advent of 12.5 gauge wire and tanalised posts treated with copper arsenate. The future may well hold posts reforged from old milk bottles if recent innovations take hold. Tractor-mounted post drivers and ATV vehicles have made it easier to access those long and lonely runs of wire singing in the wind, but expertise is what keeps them strong. We’re certain that old Mr Bessemer would approve.

FENCING TRADE DAY ADVERTORIAL

Showcasing best fencing practice Fencing Contractors Association New Zealand (FCANZ) has offered a number of fencing trade days across the country in 2019, providing access to the latest irrigator fence crossing displays, wire knots, post and rail interlocking, and security, residential and gate making demonstrations. At the recent South Island fencing trade days held in Blenheim, Darfield and Lumsden, more than 200 fencing contractors, fencing generals, employees, horticulture workers and high school students watched and learnt from two-time World Fencing champion and four-times Golden Pliers winner Shane Bouskill. He showcased various fencing techniques, including modern footing methods and gate hanging rails. Vastly experienced fencer and former FCANZ board member John Noakes hosted the three events, providing practical tips and fencing advice alongside the various product demonstrations from FCANZ partners. Offering something for both the experienced fencer and those just starting or interested in a fencing career, FCANZ will be scheduling a further series of trade days across New Zealand in 2020. Suggestions are welcomed for locations in both the North and South Islands. Next year will also see the FCANZ Annual Conference held in the first week of August. This three-day event will be in Paihia and will incorporate

the FCANZ Annual General Meeting and Conference, which will follow the theme of ‘Leadership in the Industry’. An FCANZ Field Day will provide conference attendees and members of the public with access to the latest innovations and products from the fencing industry. FCANZ partners and suppliers from around the country are encouraged to register their interest in hosting a site at what is set to be the largest fencing exhibition of the year. Conference 2020 will culminate with a gala dinner celebrating the achievements of the industry. FCANZ aims to increase the profile of fencing as a recognised profession and encourages a high level of workmanship through knowledge and standards. By fostering close relationships with affiliated industry bodies, and by representing all members of the fencing community, FCANZ keeps up-to-date on the latest issues that affect business and provides free advice on regulatory, legislative and compliance issues, ongoing support and advice on a range of subjects including health and safety.

Negotiation outcome welcomed

Onions New Zealand welcomes the successful conclusion of the RCEP negotiations, saying trade agreements like these underpin the success of the New Zealand onion sector. “The RCEP covers trade among New Zealand and 14 other Asia-Pacific countries, except India. That is, half the world’s population,” says Onions New Zealand chief executive, James Kuperus. “Without reduced tariffs and clear trading arrangements, it is extremely difficult to export from the bottom of the world to larger economies like Asia and Australia. Agreements like these mean more onions can be exported with the

higher returns going directly back into regional New Zealand communities. “Although the details of the RCEP are yet to be finalised, there are clear savings and benefits for New Zealand growers and exporters, including the agreement to clear perishable goods within six hours. It will allow more horticultural products such as onions to be exported to these markets with better assurances that they will not

sit on wharves for extended periods of time.” Mr Kuperus says New Zealand onion exports will reach $170 million in 2019. “This is a major milestone thanks to strong demand from European Union customers this year. We have been trading with the EU for more than 60 years with strong relationships built on trust and integrity. “Onions New Zealand would like to congratulate the officials who have negotiated the RCEP agreement over the past seven years.” Five thousand two hundred and ninety-six hectares of onions are

grown across New Zealand, with the main growing regions being Pukekohe, Waikato, Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay and the Manawatu. The industry is predominantly made up of family-owned and operated grower operations. “Onions are an important rotational crop because they prevent pest and disease build-up. “For example, potato and carrot growers rotate into onions because diseases that survive on potatoes and carrots do not survive on onions, meaning fewer controls are required to manage the potatoes and carrots in subsequent year plantings.”

FISHING & OUTDOORS

It’s fish versus machine in 2020 by Andy Bryenton

Since time out of mind, humans have been drawn to the ocean to catch fish. There’s even a theory that our hairless bodies (well, compared to the gorilla) and upright stance (again, I may not be the best example for Homo sapiens) came from living a semi-aquatic life spearing tasty seafood. The idea of the fish hook developed in ancient Asia, with the oldest ever hooks coming from Okinawa and dated at 23,000 years old. The same part of the world solved the problem of getting out over the breakers with the fishing kite, merely 20,000 years later. Marco Polo brought the concept to Europe, where Da Vinci created the propeller during the renaissance, leading directly to the advent of the fishing torpedo. There was a brief lull between these inventions — a trifling few hundred years. Today, one of Leonardo’s other inventions is coming to the aid of the tech-savvy angler. The aerial screw was never a name that took off, but as the helicopter or quadcopter, the concept is wildly popular. Now a new quadcopter drone has been manufactured that can withstand not just wind and rain, but a dunking in the ocean as well. The Splash Drone 3 Plus can be outfitted with a camera, or, more importantly, rigged up with a payload release system, enabling

the deployment of bair hooks and lures well out into the salty stuff. The compact little flying machine takes off from the beach, zips out to a designated distance, drops the fish-harvesting tackle, and comes back to base, well out of the range of undersea hazards. If the Splash Drone 3 Plus hits the water, it’s not all over. The drone is water-resistant, and can even right itself if it crashed face down. It’s able to take off from the surface of the sea and get back on track. This kind of emergency is kept to a minimum thanks to some very easy to use controls, and a camera, which affords you a drone’s eye view of proceedings. With the payload release at your fingertips, it’s simply a case of piloting the drone to where you want to fish, letting the hooks and bait fall, and waiting for a bite. In the meantime, your flying assistant is back on dry land, not hanging out in the swells attracting the attention of things with teeth!

There are effective natural insecticide recipes for beetles and other baddies before lipid production is achieved. It involves magnesium plus sulphur, etc, and when these levels are adequate, nitrate levels, the insect signaller — are nil. Soil-borne pathogens like Pythium, Rhizoctonia, etc, require soluble sugars to function and flourish. Why not convert these sugars to amino acids and oils so they can’t thrive? Why do we want high soil organic matter levels? If you don’t know why you should phone an Environmental Fertilisers consultant and have a chat. We can help

Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed the new Food & Fibre Skills Action Plan 2019– 2022 between the government and primary sector that will fix the skills gaps facing farmers and growers. The announcement was the result of a year’s worth of work from across the sector. “Beef + Lamb New Zealand through the Skills Leaders Working Group that involved dairy, horticulture, arable, the government and Primary ITO, has taken a leadership role on reforming the approach to primary sector skills and training,” says B+LNZ’s Chief Insight Officer Jeremy Baker. “We are confident that the Food & Fibre Skills Action Plan 2019–2022 will help address the long-term skills shortages that are constraining New Zealand’s primary producers. With the working world rapidly changing, it is clear that we needed a fresh approach to attracting people to careers in the primary sector and providing training opportunities for them. This action plan builds on initiatives that are already underway and will ensure we’re able to get the innovative, talented and hardworking people the sector needs to thrive well into the future.” Mr Baker has been deeply involved in the process of developing the new action plan and will be chairing the establishment group that is responsible for the implementation of the strategy. “During this initial phase of the action plan, Beef + Lamb New Zealand will be focussed on the establishment of the Workforce Development Council, helping to set up a new Centre of Vocational Excellence for the primary sector, and

Portable Milking Specialists

continuing our own initiatives to support on-farm training and development for sheep and beef farmers. “Our involvement in this plan reflects what our own review of industry skills and training said we needed to focus on. With our investment targeted onfarm through both extension and other development and training programmes.

While using our position to advocate for the rest of the education and training system to help attract new people and training providers to the sector.” For more information about the Food & Fibre Skills Action Plan 2019– 2022 go to mpi.govt.nz/funding-andprogrammes/other-programmes/ future-skills/.

Best of Big Boys Toys by Andy Bryenton

This year’s Big Boys Toys festival was packed full of great ideas as well as high-octane masterpieces like Mad Mike’s ‘Nimbul’ Red Bull Drift Racing Lamborghini and the Ferrari Enzo. It’s these new innovations, which make the show interesting, and 2019’s top five could transform your garage. First up, the iDrive EVC system for improving throttle response in cars and utes. This easy to install electronic device fits between the gas pedal and the computer of your vehicle. It doesn’t reconfigure the ECU, but it does allow you to vary the throttle response, for either peppier power or smooth, economical driving. This unit has proved extremely popular with those driving modern utes, as it gives them an instant boost of enthusiasm off the line, unlocking all that torque! It’s also plug-and-play, and none too expensive. Next, out the gate is Unique Garage Screens, who have developed a fold-flat system, that replaces your roller door or tilt door with a mesh ranch slider. The best part is, you keep both doors. The Unique system folds up against the roof. When your garage door is up, it can be dropped into place with the pull of two straps, creating shade with airflow, blocking insects, and generally making the garage or shed a nicer place to work or just hang out with the lads. It can be installed without chopping into your existing garage — just a few strategic bolts!

Two whole spaces this year to the rise of electric power. We’ve seen e-bikes, which can hit 80km/h, off-road scooters with monster wheels, 10hp outboards charged off solar panels and longboards controlled by your phone this year. Electric power is even being deployed for ride-on mowers. There were literally too many great new electric products to list, but the Prometheus off-road scooter was a favourite. Finally, it was great to see such a strong showing by Ford Tools, who has shaken up the ideal of a perfect garage in recent years by debuting a single cohesive range in trademark blue and black, which adds style as well as substance to your garage fit-out. Obviously, fans of the Mustang, Ranger or Falcon should take a closer look, but talk about comprehensive! The gents from Ford Tools had everything from bottle openers to undercar crawlers to bar stools, wrenches, socket sets and power drivers all blazoned with the blue oval. Of note; it’s hard to say you didn’t borrow a brother’s wrench when it’s wrapped in bright blue livery and matches all of yours!

November’s Big Boys Toys once again rolled out a feast of new gear and gadgets, innovations and ideas for the garage — such as off road e-scooters

ADVERTORIAL

Protecting your vehicle assets Dean Ashby has been involved with Corrosion Control for nearly a decade and based in Whangarei — he now has his own workshop helping protect vehicles of all types from rust and the elements of the weather. “We work with both CorrosionX and SealX, which is a protective coating on paint surfaces that leaves items looking shiny and revamped. We specialise in reviving dull and aged vehicles and make them look like new. The product puts a seal on the exterior, and the rain runs off the surface,” says Dean. Caravans, campervans, boats, motorhomes and all other vehicles including motorbikes, helicopters and aeroplanes, you name it — Dean can do it. “If you bring your old, dull caravan to me to be coated with SealX, it will look pretty much like new. The product protects it longer and will stay looking new for some time, and it is instantly worth more when it is protected. They come out looking mint. “I am a boat builder by trade and have been in the industry doing all types of repairs for more than 20 years. Having CorrosionX applied to your boat and trailer with help eliminate rust from the sea air and water. “CorrosionX is our rust stopping product, which we spray on boat trailers, chassis of motorhomes, and all other vehicles. The coating protects the metal from the sea air and gives more

years lifespan to your investment. We treat tractors, agricultural, forestry and fishing equipment, helicopters and inside aeroplane wings. It helps control rust and prevents it from developing.” Dean recommends treating new boat trailers with CorrosionX before use for maximum rust protection. “We spray CorrosionX inside the metal frames where we can, and it will remain for many years — this includes tractors and fishing boats. “Generally to spray under an eightmetre motorhome takes less than half a day, all the chassis gaps and rails are coated to prevent rust. If something has surface rust, we can help stop it with various products if we catch it in time. Control and preventative maintenance are important to keep our investments in top order. “I have a mobile service for boats, helicopters and planes. Other items are best to come to us to be protected in a controlled environment. “If you are Covi insured you get 10 per cent discount as we are approved applicators, and they have endorsed us. Now is the time to get ready for summer and know you are protected for winter, one application lasts up to two years on

a motorhome and five years on a car, with 12 months on a boat — all work comes with a warranty. “I highly recommend the products and wouldn’t entertain working with them if they didn’t work. Talking the torque by Andy Bryenton

There are two major figures, which every self-respecting petrolhead wants to know about any given vehicle as soon as its glossy sales brochures and YouTube spy videos hit. The first is horsepower, often flipped for the more internationally friendly ‘kilowatts’. The second, however, is measured in Newton-metres, and it’s all about torque. Put simply, horsepower will tell you just how quick a machine is; because it’s torque multiplied by the revolutions for each minute of the engine. Torque alone, however, is responsible for the feeling of low-end ‘grunt’ in an engine, that sense of being mashed backwards into the seat on a rollercoaster, or the kick-off the line that puts a smile on your face. Hence why sheer horsepower is one thing when it comes to motorcycles, but torque is something else. It’s felt differently, when you’re piloting a machine with only one wheel delivering the power, and supremely low weight. That’s why Yamaha has an entire range of machines dedicated just to delivering that grin-inducing, low in the rev-band surge of torque. Arguably you could say it all began with their monstrous V-Max bikes back in the early 1990s, delivering factory-fresh quarter miles in times that put tuned cars to shame. The process of delivering that visceral grunt has been refined. Yamaha has now completed an entire range of MT (max torque) motorcycles to fit every rider from the learner through to the

hard-core thrill seeker and long-distance highway traveller. At the top of the range sits the mighty MT-10SP, which is to torque-focussed power what the Yamaha YZF-R1 is to sheer blistering speed. In fact, the engine in the MT-10SP is based on the 998cc inline-four crossplane power plant of the R1 sport bike, with plenty of gearing, intake, exhaust and injection advancements to really churn out the Newton-metres from the first twist of the throttle. The result,

especially when paired with a custom Ohlins electronic race suspension system, is the confidence of power on command. It is no diesel-like behemoth — however, peak torque is still delivered when the needle hits 9,000 rpm. The MT range builds on these qualities, delivering them in bite-sized chunks for the learner rider in the MT-03 iteration and ramping up through the 07 and 09 categories with the addition of ever more force on tap.
