New chemical tests for honey could give New Zealand producers a global marketing edge. New Zealand’s leading honey testing laboratory, Hill Laboratories, have developed new oligosaccharide tests which assess sugars levels in honey specifically prebiotic and probiotic activity, which impart health benefits. Hill Laboratories client services manager, Colin Ogle, says “All honey has some levels of oligosaccharides. Our tests are able to reveal the types of oligosaccharides and the levels. Once honey producers understand which oligosaccharides their honey contains, it will help them to determine which specific health-enhancing properties their honey contains and, thereby better market their product.” Hill Laboratories is a market leader in honey testing in Australasia. The level of simple sugars in honey

determines how it behaves in storage. Simple sugar tests determine the best blending techniques that will enhance shelf life of the product. “Previously, producers blended based on gut feel, but the new data allows our producers to create specific blends based on solid science,” said Mr Ogle.

New agriculture training venture an investment in region’s future NorthTec has sealed a new education alliance with Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre to provide training for those wanting a start in the agriculture industry. by Annette Lambly-Robinson

The course will also assist those looking to acquire formal qualifications and skills with their own farming endeavours. Taratahi is the country’s oldest and largest provider of vocational agricultural training. It has an established residential campus based in Masterton, but offers a range of programmes in the Wairarapa, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and in Rodney. For 2012 both the Level 3 National Certificate in Farming Skills (Work Ready) and the Certificate in General Farm Skills courses will be offered in Northland. The National Certificate offered as a year-long full-time course aims at giving those wanting to enter the agricultural industry the knowledge to get started. Students on the course will get the option of focussing on either sheep and cattle or dairy farming.

Students will learn stock management

“The agricultural sector is important to the economic well being of Northland and it is critical that the appropriate training is provided to ensure that the sector continues to thrive.” Agriculture is Northland’s fourth largest industry and its biggest employer. Mr Binney said not only would the alliance help graduates find employment,

Once the course is complete graduates will have enough all-round skills to be ready for their first job.

“This strategic partnership is important in meeting the ongoing and future training needs of the agricultural sector throughout Northland,” said Mr Binney.

“Our educational delivery model is built on ensuring students gain real experience on real farms under the tutelage of experienced staff,” said Mr Wearing The courses will be held on a number of different farms and venues throughout Northland. Taratahi welcomes offers for further farms that can be used as training locations.

Together they hold the majority share of Okaihau Pastoral Limited — an equity share farm near Kerikeri — which Murray also manages. Earlier this year they took out the Northland region’s inaugural title of Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year in the NZ Dairy Awards annual competition also scooping up the Honda Farm Safety & Health award and the Meridian Farm Environment award. It was the first time the competition had been opened to equity farmers, the section having previously been restricted to sharemilkers only. When long-time farmer Murray, who

at the time was farming at Kio Kio near Otorohanga, first met Vicky she didn’t know the difference between a cow or a steer, let alone have any idea what milk solids or dry matter percentages were. “She thought a cow race was a bovine version of a horse race and when I mentioned the cows were a bit short (meaning short on pasture) she thought they were comparable in height to other cows,’’ laughed Murray. Vicky admits it’s been a big learning curve, (and so far she’s taken good advice and has not learned how to milk) but eight years later she has her finger on the administration pulse and a firm understanding of the farming business and the industry itself. With 23 investors in the farm the administration and reports can take more

than 20 hours a week to keep up to date and with two little girls Scarlett (2) and Taylor (three months) its a busy lifestyle. The couple’s strengths complement each other; not only in their lifestyle but in the way they manage the farm. “We might have been chalk and cheese, but she’s made me a more rounded person — I dress better these days, enjoy trying new foods and going to places like museums and art galleries.’’ said Murray. And for Vicky, she now understands the ‘farming language’, and her business acumen is put to good use on the farm. The farm is treated as a business profitability and viability for the investors and sustainability for, the land and the animals. The farm is fertile and well developed

Northern Farming Lifestyles November 2011 running 1110 cows on 447 hectares (370 effective). They employ five full-time workers. Murray believes well-cared for and well-fed cows are necessary for good production.” The better tended animals, the less likelihood of them getting sick,’’ he said. Northland extreme climatic conditions challenges feed supplies at the best of times, but Murray says if managed well the cheaper cost of land (owning and leasing) in the North can balance out overall costs. He is proud of what they have achieved since signing up for the farm and is willing to share his ideas and methods with others. “We are a young company producing between 11-13.5 percent cash return annually to our investors — this is a bloody good return,” he says. He’s aware his critics scoff that he ‘buys production’ because he supplements feed, but ‘buying right’ can result in costs being recovered from the increased production. “It’s a matter of knowing what is required, for example whether protein, energy or fibre is needed and when.’’ He swears by maize silage to maintain weight and to provide minerals and grows 50 ha on the farm contracting out a further 70 ha. Landed in the pit for 18 cents per kg of dry matter is good value. Considering in the last three years we have only been able to grow ten and a half tonne of grass per ha (due to drought and/or wet

conditions) the money spent of maize has been seen in return output. We target 500 milks solids per cow and maintain good stocking ratios.’’ The farm does no inductions, does not use CIDRs (for cycling) and completes its mating cycle in nine weeks — achieving a herd ‘empties’ rate of four percent. While not promoting genetic engineering in animals Murray says for sustainability reasons he would like to see some GE grasses which required less nitrogen, less fertiliser and fewer chemicals allowed into the country. He and Vicky have put their hands up to convene next year’s competition in the hope of encouraging farmers to give the awards a go. Murray said everyone gained something out of the awards, whether it is setting goals, improving recording keeping or efficiency, or simply looking at options to better the way they farm. “We want to stimulate others to lift the bench mark in the way we farm in New Zealand and not be complacent by thinking ‘we are the best’ — we can and should always aim to improve.” Prizes totalling around $60,000 in sponsorship have already been gathered for the upcoming Northland competition. More than 100 entries have been received since the 2012 Awards opened for entries last week — 20 more than the same time last year. Seventy two of those received to date are first time entrants. Organisers expect in excess of 500 entrants nationwide. Those that enter before December 1st, have the chance of winning one of three Honda 125 Duster bikes each valued at nearly $4,000. In addition, Northland entrants who complete the competition process and attend the awards evening go in the draw to win a Milkbar calf feeder worth $4,000. Entries close December 20th 2011.

preconception that it’s expensive but we want to bend that trend. We’re not interested in making millions but we do hope that our ideas will be popular — it’s kind of like changing the world one, customer at a time.” Te Rata Family Farm, home to Bert and Rebecca Borger and their three children, James, Miriam, Lillian and Sarah, is the epitome of what Aaron speaks so passionately about. The farm, on 400 acres of hilly country, is one of the largest free-range organic egg farms in New Zealand. The family also farm free-range heritage Tamworth pigs, which will be supplied to Stubb’s Heritage Butchery. The

Tamworth breed requires less drenching and maintenance and the sows make excellent mothers. The animals, also including sheep, cattle and goats, are raised in the most ethical and natural ways possible and the couple do not use artificial fertilisers, limit the use of sprays and avoid using any chemicals. Te Rata Family Farm’s next open day is in January.

Colin also reckons that there's some serious fun to be had off the beaten track with today's modern all-terrain vehicles, and from what we can see at Trackwise's two off-road centres, he's absolutely right. More people than ever these days are getting behind the wheel of offroaders of every kind, from ATV quads to

luxury SUVs and everything in between. But many are doing so without the benefit of even a minute's training — almost like hitting the highway without ever taking driving lessons. Colin emphasises that the challenges of off-road driving are completely different from those found on a motorway or a parking lot, and aside from the obvious safety issues involved, there's the issue of getting the most out of your off-road vehicle. Many people stop in at Trackwise

Dianne was dismayed by the amount of waste she was throwing away from her Bay of Islands café and was certain there must be a better use for such things as organic coffee grounds, than landfill fodda. She started to experiment with different concoctions on her own plants with great results and realised she might be onto something.

‘We saw a gap in the market for people who don’t have the time or space for proper composting but wanted a natural soil enhancer’, says Dianne. The result is fodda — feeding the earth. A totally natural and eco-friendly new product for busy gardeners, which feeds the earth, repels pests and even diverts waste from landfill.

after buying a new off-roader to learn the ropes from Colin, who has been a 4x4 club regular and off-road competitor for decades. On his custom-developed tracts of land in Oakleigh and Woodhill he's got steep slopes, mud, and all the challenges you'll find in the great outdoors, and he puts vehicles and their owners through their paces to improve their enjoyment of their new machines. It's great to see Range Rovers, Landcruisers and Defenders get muddy for the first time at the hands of owners who'll be using them to their full potential. But the underlying message is one of competence and safety — Colin trains Police, Fire Service and St. John's Ambulance staff as well as those heading for Australia's mining industry, where a certification in 4x4 competence is a must. Trackwise work closely with the NZQA, who provide just such an accreditation. But the other side of Colin's business is all about the enjoyment of the great outdoors, high-octane thrills and some seriously fun vehicles on tyres, tracks — and even on the water! Once you're confident and ready to hit the trails, Trackwise have a garage full of 4x4 vehicles which visitors can take out and drive, ranging from the popular Suzuki Jimny (as seen on TV3's popular off-road competition series) all the way through to fully modified vehicles which wouldn't look out of place running the Paris to Dakar rally. Scrambling up banks, tackling deep bogs and powering through the rough stuff is great fun, and a great stepping stone to joining an off-road club

— which is what many visitors to Trackwise end up doing after Colin introduces them to the thrills of the sport. And just when it looks like the adrenaline has hit maximum, he turns it up a notch. A slice of farmland in the mid-north is hardly the place you'd expect to find military hardware, but Trackwise have pulled out all the stops, purchasing a twin-bodied ex-Swedish army all-terrain APC — a tank-tracked multi-ton monster designed for the harsh conditions of the arctic and antarctic! With four-tread drive and the ability to conquer ice, snow, water, mud and combat conditions, this might just be the ultimate off-roader in the pack. Or maybe not. Because the big green machine has a little brother that looks like a tiny battle tank — the Argo amphibious UTV. And with a little practise Colin will let you get behind the steering yoke of one of these mini monsters, which are equally competent on mud, in the bush, over swamps and snow, or even floating on water. The one we checked out even had a bracket for an outboard, but the Argo can also get along under its own power — all 674cc of it. Colin has put together something unique here just south of Whangarei, turning a piece of conventional farmland into an off-road playground and proving ground. Upgrades are ongoing, but there's already a lot of scope there for upskilling off-road drivers and having a huge amount of fun along the way. With more and more people getting into 4x4s, ATVs and UTVs for business and pleasure, Trackwise is a great idea all round.

Wood chips — a sustainable energy option Wood chips could be a sustainable energy source for New Zealand's large industries. While marginally more expensive per kilojoule than coal or natural gas, it is competitive with LPG and diesel. Forest Owners Association senior policy analyst, Glen Mackie, says branches, reject logs and stumps are available as part of the normal forest harvesting cycle. Some of this material is chipped by contractors for use as biofuel, but most of it is unused, because of limited demand. Wood chip is an environmentally sustainable, carbon-neutral fuel that will be

available in increasing volumes as new forests planted in the 1990s come into production. While it is seldom economic to truck it more than 100 kilometres from the source, any major user of gas within this radius could find wood chip the answer to energy security. Last month northern industries faced major disruptions caused by the rupture to the Maui gas line supply including the shutdown of 15 of Fonterra’s milk processing plants. Syngas could be used as a direct substitute or back-up for fossil gas from the Maui field.

Opening up a nation’s farms

Harold Marsh is the author of diaries that give a vivid picture of settler life in Kaipara

more than 7000 images recording much the same information for posterity.

A selection of those photographs, many never seen outside the family before, have now been published in Images from Albertland, a stunning book which marks the 150th anniversary next Easter of the Albertlanders’ settlement of 70,000 acres of the coastal Kaipara.

by Paul Campbell

February 28th 1898 ‘We arrived about 3.45 pm and landed at the wharf in the creek, carried a load each of the heaviest things up to the house and inspected our future residence — fetched another load each after which Ben Blackburn went for another, while Jim Halfpenny swept out the mansion and Percy Grice and I went in search of water . . .’ Tales of a different time as a group of young men from farming families in Warehine, on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour, and in the heart of Albertland, began the arduous work of breaking in a block of land for a neighbour. This was a source of cash in times when it was rarely seen, with the settler families living off the food they grew, or caught in the sea.

In the diary excerpts below, we learn at first hand of just how it was for those men of the land who made the first impressions on country that today is rich and verdant, and part of the backbone of the national economy. Back then — it was simply hard yakka. March 1: ‘Got up at sunrise. Commenced work, chopped about 20 chains on one side of the line. Made a fire and lost control over it and it burned about 60 or 70 chains of the line on its own account.

Images from Albertland William Harold Marsh, farmer, father, early Albertlander and adventurous photographer captured a time of enchantment, when life was lived at a slower pace and governed by a different set of values, priorities and ambitions. This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

‘Had to carry water in the billies from

the gully to quench the burning posts: got very black and returned home very tired at sunset after most of the fire had gone out. March 3: ‘Chopped about 23 chains of the line through the black sticks. Forgot the stone, therefore had to use blunt slashers all day. Went fishing at night. March 6: ‘Lay in in the morning. Caught another rat in the trap. Had breakfast at 11 am and dinner at 3.30 pm. Occupied our time lounging about the balcony enjoying the scenery and sunshine, reading, attempting to sketch etc’. These entries are a far cry indeed from farm life today — with farm bikes, chainsaws, post hole diggers and innumerable other devices, not to mention time for a beer at the local pub after work and sky TV in the evening. As the work progressed though, and farms were broken in, there began to be light at the end of the tunnel for those on the land.

The Northland Regional Council is asking for feedback on its recently released Draft New Regional Policy Statement (RPS). The RPS provides a broad direction and framework for managing Northland’s natural and physical resources, including land, water, minerals, plants, animals and built structures. Regional and district plans must implement the overarching direction set once the final new RPS becomes operative. The period for feedback on the Draft New RPS runs until Friday 9 December 2011. In recent months the regional council has been working to identify draft regionally significant issues, and then developing objectives, policies, and methods to address them. The Draft New RPS reflects the importance of protecting our natural resources while also creating provisions to contribute towards community prosperity and wellbeing. The Draft New RPS and its companion document (which contains detailed analysis on the draft issues, objectives, policies and methods) are very much working drafts. The council is taking the step of seeking public feedback now, before developing a Proposed RPS in early 2012, which will be subject to a formal submissions process under the Resource Management Act 1991. Specific provisions proposed in the Draft New RPS that may be likely to affect you include:    Rural production recognised with protection against reverse sensitivity issues as a result of residential development.    Policies and methods to establish water quality and quantity objectives in line with the Freshwater National Policy Statement.    A proposal to investigate, develop and use tradeable water rights and water sharing schemes.  More controls on development in the coastal environment.  Incentives for landowners to protect special places and important ecosystems. For more information, please visit our website www.nrc.govt.nz/newRPS where you can also access a feedback form or call freephone 0800 002 004. The webpage also provides details of workshops planned for key stakeholders in early November.

Clearing the land was hard ‘yakka’

A pioneer of the dairy industry, operating an Alfa Laval separator

Images from Albertland also relates the story of another Albertland pioneering farmer, Walter Stables, whose family took over a partly established property. His story continues: ‘Walter had a look around the farm and studied the house. He reckoned it needed a good coat of paint and some alterations. He was pleased to find several patches of grass amongst the bush and some suitable cropping areas. There were several apple trees with one carrying a good crop and nearly ripe. ‘A considerable quantity of further stores such as flour and sugar, rolled oats and potatoes had been ordered from the co-op store and were to be sent by boat. ‘Walter remarked to (his wife) Lillian that as they didn’t have any money, selfsufficiency with a good garden would have to be a first consideration. A plot down near the boundary was picked out as being most suitable and within a week, two acres of potatoes, cabbages, swedes, beans, wheat and corn had GEA Farm Technologies NZ Ltd

been planted. Half the area was in wheat as a trial to provide feed for the fowls. If it did well he planned to have a larger area the following year, grinding some for flour and porridge. ‘But the immediate task for the whole family was house cleaning, inside and out. There were cobwebs, signs of rats and dust and dirt upstairs and downstairs. They also went for a look around the whole farm and found cleared patches, mostly by burning, but now overgrown with ferns and tough native grasses. They thought the cattle could chew this off.

‘Three months after their arrival the garden was doing well, there were two horses using a borrowed plough, three cows, two in milk and plenty of butter, cheese and milk. Four acres had been worked over and sown in rye and cocksfoot. ‘Walter presented his five year plan for discussion. Apart from erecting buildings, he wanted to have 75 ewes, 20 head of cattle, several house cows and a few pigs and poultry. Growing his own poultry feed, he considered there

was good money selling eggs as there was a good demand in Port Albert and Auckland. Butter could be sent by boat to Onehunga. Several boats were now trading between Port Albert, Helensville, Dargaville and Pahi. He hoped to be in operation in 12 months . . . The story is typical of those hardy settlers who opened up farming in the north and it is hugely fortunate that Harold Marsh turned to photography, to capture scenes otherwise lost forever.

ForageSolutions

‘Most of the land that had been cropped and not re-grassed was now a mass of penny-royal which attracted the bees. Two neglected hives were found under a Totara and after being cleared they hoped to have honey, if someone could be found to collect it. Walter was not keen on the prospect himself.

Solving murky water problems North Auckland water treatment specialist, Ron Bott, believes he may have found a simple answer to solve the world’s problem of obtaining enough clean drinking water

Mr Bott’s Kumeu based company, Healthy Clearwater Solutions Ltd, has been granted a worldwide provisional patent to cover his claims that the application of a common chemical and hand pumped pressurization through a filter can clean up murky water so that it is fit for human consumption. He claims his “Pump and Go H2O portable water treatment system” removes contaminants and cleans water through a process that first kills off bugs and germs and then filters the now inert particulates, resulting in water that is fit to drink, cook and bathe in. The company is poised to release two sizes onto the market; a small 25 litre treatment container for individuals and a larger 180 litre system for households. The basic ingredient is the same chemical that has been

used for generations to bleach hair. “Hydrogen peroxide is the only chemical that does its job of killing bugs and then reverts to oxygen, so it re-oxygenates the water. Our tests were done with chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and iodine. Iodine and chlorine leave nasty residues; hydrogen peroxide doesn’t,” Mr Bott said “It takes less than an hour to treat a load of water. We fill the container with water, add the chemical, put the top on and leave it to stand. Then we pressurise the container using a hand pump to force the water through a filter. The result is potable drinking water. We can use many different filter mediums. This is the answer to the problems with getting fresh water to disaster areas, or areas with no potable drinking water.”

The development follows a 40-year career in water treatment and resulted from a steady stream of international inquiries for a small hand-operated treatment system that could be used anywhere. “I believe this product has wide ranging applications in under-developed countries and areas that have suffered natural disasters,” he says. Mr Bott claims he has the support of a large European hand-pump manufacturer and has engaged the services of a local plastics manufacturer to make the specialised polymer bags used to dispense the chemical dosages. Tests to prove the effectiveness of the system are currently underway at the Hills Testing Laboratories in Hamilton.

The short drop loo The inconvenience of no convenience is something we have all experienced at some time or another. Whether it’s out in the garden, in the shed or at the beach on the yet to be built on section, being caught short leads to all sorts of desperate behaviour. The sprint from the flower bed back to the house when your sprinting days are over, the difficulty of carrying out a delicate mechanical operation while crossing your legs and rocking back and forward in the man cave or worst of all having to refill the coke bottle in the back of the car on the vacant lot in the heat of the day. Having studied the subject for a number of years I believe the most efficient method of disposing of the smelly stuff is to use the services of the humble composting worm and to that end the idea of a short drop toilet evolved. The portaloo has been around for years but the resulting waste stew that is produced has to be taken off site for treatment and the chemical additions to keep away the nasty smells makes it a potent mixture. Having developed vermacoposting systems for complete households it wasn’t difficult to scale down the operation to a small ‘standalone’ unit that processed the solids and allowed the liquids to drain into

a self contained garden where the high nitrogen liquid — a mixture of urine, worm wee and water from the hand basin grow excellent rhubarb. The secret of treating the smelly brown stuff with worms is to make sure that it is not contaminated with urine. To ensure this the SDL is equipped with poo flickers which shift the solid material to the corners of the compost bin out of the firing line of the liquids. The composted material can be removed through the ports situated either end of the bin and by using one end only for a period of time it is possible to extract the processed fertiliser without having to wrestle with fresh guano.

Grassroots for animal health

A well balanced and fertile soil and good weather are required to produce the high quality feeds necessary for good farming and that usually entails a little more work than just relying on luck. Science is playing an ever increasing role in New Zealand farming, putting the microscope literally onto soils,

looking for acids or alkalines, organic matter, or humus, as well as minerals including phosphates, sulfates, calcium, magnesium, and potassium among many other trace elements. This determines fertiliser needs and with the right formulas and application you should soon achieve good quality grazing that provides the

bulk of stock nutrition and health needs. Top-dressing can pay off on a continual basis as after the initial application, trace elements are recycled in manure from stock going back into the soil. On most farms, supplementary feeds are a necessary commodity with palm kernel becoming a standby in recent years alongside hay and silage. This may prove the case again this summer with dry periods in the long range forecast. There are any number of feed additives on the market, with the major nutrients including energy protein and minerals including calcium, phosphorus,

magnesium potassium, sodium, and trace elements and vitamins. The specific requirements for different breeds and species depends on a number of factors including differences in genetic make-up, age, growth rate and desired gain or production, and pregnancy, among others. A complete and balanced animal feed programme is pretty dependent on soil fertility as most of the deficiency or illness in animals can be traced back to poor soil quality as well as the incorrect application of fertiliser. As soil testing science has progressed, so too has overall farm productivity.

Trees a factor in stock health

Animal health can sometimes simply be a matter of good shelter, and there is a growing awareness on the farm that there is a very simple answer to providing that essential element. Trees provide the most effective shelter and shade for animals. With better conditions and welfare come healthier animals and higher productivity with less disease. Simply put — trees combat erosion and protect stock. And in Northland, there is a growing movement towards the totara as the region's farm forests of the future Totara are so vigorous and abundant in this region that farmers often consider them firewood at best — or more commonly, weeds. In many parts of Northland totara have now become an ingrained part of the local landscape. These weed-like characteristics allow this native tree to play a useful and potentially productive role within the farm. The Northland Totara Working Group is exploring the potential to change this ‘weed problem’ into an asset for the landowner. While sustainable timber production is a primary focus, the other benefits that come along with the trees are also important, including erosion control, enhanced soil and water quality, riparian management, landscape and amenity values and stock shade and shelter. The establishment of effective shelter systems, for dairy farms as well as any other farm, is a complex process deserving planning and research before ringing the fencer or visiting the nursery. Essential factors to consider are things like the prevailing wind. Shelterbelts should be at right angles to your most harmful wind. Poor decisions made in orientating your shelter

FARM Rural women play role in lowering quad accidents

November 2011

The Dairy Women’s Network is working with the Department of Labour to increase the quad skill levels of dairy farming women.

Ag ITO advisor Graeme Couper is one of the 10 instructors who will be providing hands-on tips to improve quad bike riding skills. He believes women are often more open to improving their skill set, and play a vital role in passing those skills on to other staff. The Department of Labour is one year into an initiative aimed at reducing quad bike accidents by 30% by 2013. The department currently has farm inspection visits underway. Quad bike accidents are the biggest cause of onfarm injuries and deaths in New Zealand. Last year two women were killed in farming quad bike accidents.

WANTED! This month the organisation has used the popular Dairy Days as a way to get the message out about safer riding. Last Friday women attending Northland’s dairy days held at Rockhill Orchard at Maungatapere had the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge on quads under the guidance of trained instructors. The workshop was one of many held nationwide this month. “More women than ever are involved in the dairy industry, often as heavily as their male counterparts and the impact death and injury has on rural families and businesses is simply too great to ignore,” says Dairy Women's Network chief executive, Sarah Speight.

A 62-year-old woman was killed on her property in Kaikohe, while a young farm worker was killed near Westport. Over the past eight years seven women have lost their lives in quad accidents on farms and every year, on average, five farmers are killed and 850 are injured. The accidents incur an ACC bill of around $7 million a year, and leave a legacy of loss, debilitation and pain.

Electric power to tame the wild low maintenance costs and (literally) bulletproof construction. The Bad Boy plugs into a wall socket to charge, and can easily accommodate two workers and all their tools, plus the dog! Because of its light weight it is able to make the best of its hi/lo ratio drive system — unique in that it doesn’t actually need a gearbox, or indeed any complicated parts apart from its hardwearing electric motor. The obvious benefit is a lack of fuel costs, but without gaskets, plugs, points and all the rest

by our motoring correspondent

The hybrid and electric revolution which is swiftly gaining momentum in the world of road-going vehicles would seem to be a world away from the realities of a hard day’s work in rural New Zealand. While vehicles like the Toyota Prius aim to save the environment with lower carbon emissions and a smaller ‘footprint’, the average farmer knows the ‘environment’ up close and personal — a place of muddy hollows, rocks, streams, steep banks and unforgiving weather. Our rural environment is known as one of the most challenging places on earth for a vehicle, so more power has often been the order of the day, coupled with no-nonsense tough construction and four-wheel drive grip. That’s where Bad Boy buggies enter the picture — a range of electric utility vehicles built tough as nails and able to do the job of a much larger truck without the fuel bills or the bulk. Developed for hunters in the North American wilderness, these vehicles span the gap between a full-sized ute and an ATV quad, with twoseater practicality, a wide, firmly planted stance thanks to a broad wheelbase, a

generously sized tray for all your tools and gear, and of course the safety of an enclosed roll cage and roof. This kind of small, lightweight but rugged vehicle has become a regular feature on many Kiwi farms thanks to its ability to access areas where bigger trucks can’t go, or to nip around with extra tools and materials which an ATV hasn’t got the grunt or the size to carry. The Bad Boy brings a new concept to this market — electric power. But it’s no golf cart — the Bad Boy comes from the land of the Hummvee after all, and hunters and farmers in the US are more than pleased by its 70-kilometre range on a full charge, buckets of ready torque,

SCORCHING HOT DEALS

there are fewer ongoing costs associated with going electric as well. Bad Boy have carved out a thriving niche building electrically powered machines for serious hunters and farmers in one of the most competitive markets in the world — North America. Now they’re poised to bring the electric revolution to New Zealand with a range of practical and tough machines to suit every farm and every budget. And as an added bonus, in the back blocks of New Zealand we have far fewer grizzly bears to contend with!

Cropping in Northland

Casting for cancer recovery

by Bob Cathcart, Land Management Specialist, Northland Regional Council

More and more Northland farmers are using crops to supplement either summer or winter feed supplies, or both. Others are renewing pastures, grass to grass, and not bothering with a crop. When it comes to cropping in Northland, some of our more difficult soils need careful treatment to avoid soil erosion, loss of soil structure and loss of organic matter. Any cultivation system involves risk so what steps can be taken to reduce this risk? Firstly, know the soil type you are dealing with. The older the soil, the easier it will be to cultivate and prepare a seedbed but greater the risk of soil loss. Younger soils like Waiotira clay loam — found on much of our hill country south-west of Whangarei — and Marua clay loam along the east coast have higher clay content, making the soil sticky, blocky, and more difficult to create a seedbed and establish pasture. This land needs to be cultivated and smoothed as it's usually fairly rough as a result of limited initial cultivation — after the bush was cleared — and heavy stocking over time. It will be difficult to cultivate but, providing the soil moisture levels are right, modern equipment should establish a reasonable seedbed.

Bob Cathcart

The older the soil, the less clay it will have in the topsoil and the easier it will be to cultivate, establish a seedbed, and re-establish in new pasture. However, it is this ease of cultivation that makes the soil more susceptible to erosion. Over-cultivation will break down soil structure and cause loss of organic matter. Too frequent cropping on gumland will reduce the soil to structureless silt or sand and make it very susceptible to erosion; sheet and rill, and small gullies. Good pasture management will very quickly build organic matter, soil structure and fertility in gumland soils; however over-cultivation will quickly destroy this careful management. The high intensity rain storms that strike Northland in late summer and early autumn present the greatest risk of serious soil and nutrient loss on cultivated ground. It is better to cultivate in the late spring — break up any compaction, smooth the paddocks to improve surface drainage, and then grow a summer crop. It's also best to direct drill to re-sow pasture in the autumn, to minimise soil disturbance and reduce the risk of erosion.

e t a v o n e r r o d l i To bu Starting from scratch?

by our building correspondent

I well remember a relative who had inherited an old villa in inner Auckland. It was dilapidated — past its use by date — but local council regulations were a mine field, should he demolish it and rebuild on the site. He was a smart cookie, and after gathering the required signatories of neighbours he had known as he grew up, he was able to ‘renovate’. The fact that the renovation went up two full stories and covered almost the entire inner city section, was moot. It was still a renovation, that you and I would have described as a complete new home. It is a vexed question in built up areas. But in the more rural north, for the most part, there is more flexibility. If you are building, then the first decision is obviously, where? It’s a decision that will last the life of the house too. The location of a new home depends on a myriad factors, but

as top priority, where is the sun, and where the prevailing wind?

We are a HETTICH ENDORSED SHOWROOM

Warmth and shelter areas are a major factor that will have long term ramifications in energy use for heating and cooling. This is important for positioning the bedrooms as well as lounge and kitchen for maximum weather benefits. To build or renovate Going for a great image

Building a home from scratch certainly has a lot to recommend it — not least being the fact that the family moves in when the building is ready. But on the other hand, renovating an existing home — unless alternative living space is available, means living with the detritus of construction and all its associated drawbacks, including incessant noise from hammers and power tools. That is, unless you are joining the speculators, doing up old or poorly maintained houses to on-sell.

If you’re renovating with the intention of a return on investment, you need to look at tastes other than your own — to cater for the average buyer’s preferences. Visiting show homes is a good way to get your finger on the market pulse. Your target market is the buyers who do not know how to renovate or can’t be bothered with the work involved. They’re looking for a house that they can move into and not have to lift a finger to decorate. They want the financial advantages of owning a home, but not the headaches.

It is important to make improvements on those points in a house that the buyers actually notice. The fixtures in the home are usually attention magnets. Kitchens and bathrooms really do sell houses. Spare the expense in the living and sleeping areas, and use it to make the kitchen and bathrooms as spectacular as a small budget will allow. Appearance sells. Cosmetics are also important for the house to look freshly renovated when the for-sale sign goes up. Kitchen counters and cabinet doors wear rapidly so try and install them in the last weeks. Stainless steel kitchen sinks are durable, while the modern composite or plastic white or coloured sinks stain easily. When you’re shopping for fixtures, buy the most attractive ones you can find for your price availability. You can buy quality plus appearance, or just appearance. Buy for appearance. It’s the look that will sell the house.

To build or renovate that means a free information service for doer-uppers. We spend about 80 percent of our lives in our homes and so the environment and the ambience you create will have a huge impact on your life. It is also a fact that you need to stick to a budget. Quality is expensive, and pushes the price of most houses out of the range of the average first-time buyer. But one expense that must be worthwhile is for good decorating advice. An interior designer can show you how to pull together the entire look of your home; the exterior colours, the interior wall and accent colours, the carpet and flooring colours and patterns, cabinet colours and hardware, and the layout of the rooms. The few hundred dollars that it will cost to put your house’s package together can turn into a few thousand dollars if it attracts even one more buyer with an offer in his hand. After all — it’s all about impressing a buyer, or just yourself?

Less wasteful waste water

When a septic system is working well, it’s something most people don’t spare a thought for. In fact, it’s only when a septic system goes wrong that most people really pay attention to the feat of engineering which makes their home liveable! Thankfully, there is one local man who knows all about septic systems, tackling the sometimes dirty job of making sure the West Coast’s waste water systems are up to scratch — and up to code. His distinctive number plate tells the tale, but Darryl Bagby is quick to remind us that his job is really all about keeping homes safe and hygienically clean. Darryl has been in the renovations trade for over 30 years, so he knows the ins and outs of repairing and maintaining the perfect home. Installing a top-notch septic system is literally ‘doing the groundwork’ for the future, and when a home is upgraded (with a modern en suite, for example) it’s often a council requirement that the septic system is updated at the same time.

That’s a good thing, because modern septic systems are far more efficient than those of yesteryear. Darryl recommends and uses the Super Treat system, which adds oxygen to the waste water, allowing microbes to do a better, faster job. These little organisms are ‘nature’s janitors’, and they clean up anything nasty the natural way. Super Treat systems use less electricity and are more robust as a result of their unique construction. Darryl’s company, Bagby Property Services, incorporates West Coast Waste Water Treatment, but he’s at home with all kinds of repairs, alterations, minor renovations, painting, wallpapering, fencing and decking. Older homes are a speciality, so if you have an old villa that needs some TLC, Darryl can restore it to its former glory. Darryl even works for The Historic Places Trust. So if you are looking to upgrade, it makes sense to talk to the man who can do it all — from the parts of your home you see every day to the vital infrastructure hidden under the ground!

Starting from scratch? While real estate agents offer thoughts, remember they are selling on commission, so make sure you get expert and independent advice. There is also the matter of permits and council regulations. Make sure you get the paper work done. Most builders want power and water supplies available on site — even if its from a neighbouring property. Site access comes next. A concrete drive may be your first construction project, to provide access for the construction crew and materials. Check with your local authority and plumber for which sewage systems are approved for your area. There is an apparent trend growing, for home builders to assist by providing labour on site and of course, for DIY New Zealanders, the actual home construction might not be beyond the realms of possibility. Some banks may jib at financing an own-build unless the qualifications are up to scratch. A registered builder must provide insurance cover against faulty work and materials and naturally, if you are building yourself, the bank will want to see the same thing. It can literally take months to get the estimates of cost, permits and permissions before you are anywhere near ready to start home construction. While you are about this process, look around and compare quotes. You might be surprised at how much prices can vary for the same job requirements. Before you do

decide on a tradesman, check out the work that they have already done. And registration is a key factor, Most builders and trades people have to be registered and it is not rocket science to ensure your contractors have the right papers. Then there are the considerations of all the tasks required to be carried out by subsidiary trades, such as site works, bricklaying, roofing, plastering, painting plumbing and electrical. So in short, building your home can be a great adventure — but you will no doubt be mightily relieved when it’s finally done.

Clearing this hillside at the back of Warkworth shows the steepness of the terrain and just how dense the gorse was. The final result is impressive when you consider that in a little more than a day we were able to make such a transformation. No matter how big or how small, 2 acres or 2000 acres, we can mulch any size gorse, all other noxious weeds and trees to below ground level while preserving native vegetation. Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can reach almost anywhere. The major difference is that the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next. The mulch is able to rot down and put nutrients into the soil while stopping soil run off when it rains. Our new SlashBuster Mulcher arrives from the USA soon – Preview it now on www.slashbuster.co.nz “Our business is built on our reputation, people trust us and building on that trust is very important to me personally” - Ken Borg.

Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen New season, new challenges… Well that’s the dairy industry. Welcome to spring. One of the challenges farmers seem to face a lot is staff. For a variety of reasons they can be difficult to get and to keep, leaving the farm owner to keep the farm running for sometimes many months. The result is stress, and fatigue which can lead to accidents and worse. What has been noticed is that in the absence of reliable staff, there is a trend toward upgrading the automation of dairy and herd management functions to reduce dependency on staff, reducing ongoing labour costs and more importantly increasing the efficiency of the overall system. In the milking parlour you could put in automated plant and vat washers so you don’t have to wait for the wash to finish, automatic drafting gates that uses EID tags to draft the herd or heat detection using Milfos activity collars to make mating management a breeze. Maybe auto teat spraying either in race or on bail (rotaries), these can be retro fitted to any brand of platform. In herringbones swingarms in the pit will keep the pit clear and easier to move around and help with cluster alignment. Milfos cup removers can save time by eliminating over milking and the related problems. There are many options from flow controlled to milk metering, to networked with herd management recording. N.b There is a special limited offer on iCR intelligent cluster remover with 0% interest, contact your local Milfos dealer for details or visit www.milfos.com. Not enough? How about composite mastitis detection on bail along with milk yield, fat, protein and lactose or an accurate, on bail full somatic cell test every milking. While I have only listed a few, there are a lot of ways that Milfos can help to make your job a little easier, maybe reduce some stress and give some time back for the things you want to do. If you need some advice on how to improve your dairy, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Milfos dealer or visit www.milfos.com to find out who to talk to.
