Film director set on rural couple by Kim Munro

When it comes to making movies, director Hamish Bennett has his heart set on telling rural stories and is on the lookout for ‘real farming people’ to make his second short film.

November 2012 Its dry and the water tank is nearly empty. Still cold enough in the mornings to make the partner more attractive. Barack is back, Key is confused and English is speechless. Coming into summer, landscaping in the form of planting, patios, pools etc starts coming to mind. New Zealanders are still a DIY bunch but it is worth considering employing specialists to complete some, or all, of your landscape work. At Plantpro & Sons we provide design and

‘Ross and Beth’ is the story of an elderly dairy farming couple and Hamish, originally from a small rural community in Northland called Tauraroa, is keen to use actual farmers in the lead roles.

Do you want to be involved in the Agricultural Industry?

His debut short film, ‘The Dump’ was filmed entirely at a small rural transfer station in Tauraroa and has gone on to screen at film festivals all over the world. It also garnered him the award for best short film script at the 2012 NZ Writers Guild Awards.

“Anyone who has grown up rurally knows how a farmer behaves — their mannerisms, their traits. For ‘Ross and Beth’ to work as a film it needs to be completely genuine, which is why we’re putting our casting feelers out across the provinces!” Hamish is looking for rural men and women, mid-sixties and older, who know their way around a milking shed. The

director says experience as an actor is a plus but certainly not a prerequisite. He is also looking for a suitable location for shooting over a four day period in April next year — ideally a farm with an older farmhouse and a herringbone milking shed. For Hamish, the authenticity and larger than life personalities he grew up around remain an inspiration. “I guess for me, what I see when I’m outside of the city is the real New Zealand, the country I grew up in, and I’m committed to capturing those stories.” If you think you’ve got what it takes to step in front of the camera or have a farm you think might make a good location, then Hamish would love to hear from you. Aquaculture targets 700 jobs by Paul Campbell

In a major new initiative, the Tai Tokerau aquaculture development group this month launched the Northland Aquaculture Strategy, predicting marine farming will employ up to 700 people in the Northland region by 2030. The group includes a number of iwi companies and unveiled its plans on November 9. Group chairman, Alan Pivac, of Ngaˉti Whaˉtua said the plan comes after a year’s work by five groups, focusing on finfish, and shellfish, adding “the government’s goal is for New Zealand to have a billiondollar aquaculture industry in less than 20 years.” Of that amount, Northland’s aquaculture industry supporters believe they can contribute $300 million a year. At present, the Northland industry produces about $26 million annually. Scientists are now successfully raising snapper, kingfish and paˉua at NIWA’s Bream Bay research centre and the industry says this indicates the $300 million goal is attainable. The aquaculture strategy was launched at Bream Bay Aquaculture Park, by Primary Industries Minister, David Carter. The Maˉori funding agency, Te Puni Koˉkiri says Maˉori are already significant players in New Zealand’s aquaculture industry with the role expected to expand. It says ‘Kaimoana has always been an important part of Te Ao Maˉori: Maˉori are well-positioned to take advantage

There are many examples of active ‘farming’ of shellfish in Maˉori history, such as transplanting paˉua from distant beds to beds closer to kainga, the customary practice of transferring toheroa from one bed to another to enhance stocks, and oyster enhancement practices of transferring rocks to known areas of oyster spatfall

to increase the surface area for oysters to grow. By using this history and embracing new technologies to further develop an environmentally sustainable industry, Maˉori will benefit socially, economically, and culturally’. NIWA was commissioned by Te Puni Koˉkiri to provide Maˉori with scientific and technical information to inform their decision making on aquaculturerelated issues.

‘It’s in the genes’ by Kim Munro

Ron and Colleen Gifford of Waimatenui have bred over three generations of Oripak German Shepherds along with 18 years producing fine Oripak Simmentals. Success is all about genetics for the Giffords. It all started in 1982 when they set up their German Shepherd kennels at a small place in Northland called Kapiro, deciding on the name for the kennels as, Kapiro spelt backwards, ‘Oripak’. The Giffords sold their service station business in Kapiro in 1995 and moved to a 200-acre farm in Riponui for eight years before returning to Waimatenui, just out of

“We were interested in German Shepherds and I’ve always been intrigued by genetics — so we bought a bitch pup and now it’s been 30 years since we first began breeding and showing!” says Colleen. German Shepherds typically have great

temperaments and make excellent companions for families and active older people and are also suitable for herding, obedience, showing and agility. “Our aim has always been to develop attributes in our dogs according to the breed’s finest standards. They’re great dogs — they’re only limited by their owners.” Ron and Colleen only sell pups to ‘approved’ homes and have sold as far afield as USA and Tahiti and from Kaitaia to Invercargill in New Zealand. The pups are reared in their home environment for the first four to five weeks and at seven weeks they are vet checked and receive their first inoculation of Nobivac DHPPI.

and the movement of the dog — it should have the stamina to move well for a good length of time — after all they’re a working dog.”

Fat-scanning is an integral part of the programme at Oripak with bulls and heifers scanned for fat covers. Positive fat covers make for easy keeping animals in hard times when feed is short and for easier finishing animals.

“When we were at our peak in showing, we would be training at least 30 kilometres per week in the lead up to a show. I was pretty fit back then — that was 20 years ago,” laughs Colleen.

“They take less maintenance and hold their condition better which is what people want when they’re finishing stock.”

Colleen says she enjoys passing on her canine knowledge to others and is on the Bay of Islands Canine Association committee and is a member of the NZ Kennel Club and the German Shepherd Advisory Council of NZ.

“The same people lease our bulls year after year — they know they will behave well which is important particularly for small holders.”

The Giffords not only breed fine dogs. Following the success of Oripak German Shepherds, they set about establishing a Simmental stud 18 years ago with two pedigree cows and a pedigree bull. “We were intrigued with the breed — my cousin owns Hampton Downs and after discussing it with him, we decided to give them a go.” Oripak Simmentals has a herd of 40 cows and two sires built from a concentration of Hampton Downs genetics through natural mating, rather than AI.

“We have slowly built up Colleen with grandson, a desirable set of attributes Max on the farm in our herd over a number of at Waimatenui years without buying in a lot of breeding Over the years, the Giffords have achieved excellent ratings stock — a genetic concentration of fine in major German Shepherd ‘specialty’ shows and on average temperament, ease of calving and good would compete in a show once a month travelling all over the growth suitable for a dairy or commercial North Island. The stud sells bulls and leases to small block holders and has a range of autumn-born bulls and yearling bulls all BVD tested and inoculated.

otorcycling, horse riding, surfing, hunting, fishing, back flipping off bridges, paintballing and running through native bush and down rivers are some of the activities in store at The Farm. Ten years ago Ellen and Micheal combined their farm with backpacker and family accommodation and an adventure playground for school camps, horse riders, and motorbike

enthusiasts. “Kids get the chance to enjoy the outdoors, push their boundaries and challenge themselves on The Farm, and while it’s high adventure, we make our philosophy high excitement and low actual risk, and we have great staff,” says Ellen. Their facebook page is filled with messages from school kids and backpackers alike reminiscing about their adventures — including Whangarei Girls High School student, Tinaysha Gallagher who said, ‘thanks to you guys I got over my fear of motor bikes — I am so coming back to have more fun’.

around 20 years ago and they combined their skills to make it the adventure haven it is today. Ellen owned a small farmstay, backpackers and horse riding school when she met Michael, the local vet, who was also share milking. After the couple married, they decided to sell up and buy a real farm. They started off by hosting WWOOFers (willing workers on organic farms) and word of mouth spread, growing into backpacker accommodation, and around eight years ago they added the school camps. “We always wanted to own a big farm, we absolutely love the lifestyle, and we’ve never looked back.” Boys and girls camps create a lifetime of memories at The Farm

They have just upped the adventure ante with a motorbike terrain park which opened in July and covers their 1000 acre property which is a mix of rolling countryside and native bush. “It caters to the experienced riders with a motocross track and expert-only bush track, or there are other tracks suitable for beginners and kids.” While it may not get the heart pumping, milking cows and rearing calves are also on the activities list for those who want a real country experience. “We have schools from Auckland come up and stay. Some of those kids have never been on a farm before and they really enjoy feeding the calves or the pigs.”

Around 15 schools from Whangarei and Auckland have their holiday programmes at The Farm with jam packed bookings throughout the year. Ellen attributes their success to “lots of help and lots of scheduling.” Their farm managers, Craig Shortridge and Toni Wrathall have been with them since the beginning, and their seven children with age ranges from 14-22 also help out on the farm and as camp leaders. “Our kids love our business and for all of us it doesn’t feel like work — our extra endeavours help to keep the farm going for us and the people we share it with.” Ellen and Michael bought the farm

n, what was, Hobson County, in the 1960s, only 60kms out of 900kms of roads were sealed and the roading was divided into quadrants — frustrating for the doctors as emergency locations were often only a small distance as the crow flies but many miles by road. Dr Philip Barham, recently arrived in Dargaville as a general practitioner, had an idea to solve this problem and set out to establish a regular flying doctor facility for the district, the first ever in New Zealand. Dr Barham obtained his pilot’s licence through a scholarship at Otago University and after much research, the service got off the ground in 1964,

responding to emergency call-outs in a single engine plane, visiting patients in outlying clinics and at times transporting patients to hospital. One person who experienced the service first-hand is Trevor Bowater, who was haybailing in Pouto and recalls, “I was siphoning petrol into my truck when I swallowed a huge amount — when the fumes filled my lungs I couldn’t inhale and blacked out. A few guys kept me alive with CPR and Dr Barham was soon there with oxygen to save the day.” “It would have taken well over an hour for a doctor to arrive by car — I don’t think I would have made it.” The service continued for five years until Dr Barham developed a middle ear disorder which prevented his flying. Airborne rescues continue today thanks to the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopters, now entering their 25th year of service. but how can you ever know when you will need it,” says Ruawai College head boy Mike Bickers who recently received assistance. Mike was injured during a rugby game against Kaihu following a shoulder charge. “I was almost blacking out and everything went tingly from my neck down,” says Mike. He was flown to Whangarei Hospital where he was x-rayed. Initially it was feared he had a cracked vertebrae, however doctors discovered that it was naturally fused. Five hours later he was on his way home but was kept off the rugby field for a month. “You see these people on TV and they look like they know what they are doing and that’s the way it turned out for me,” says Mike. Vaudine Tutill was run over by a tractor in May this year and considers herself ‘blessed to be alive’. “I was feeding out balage and next thing I know the back wheel of the tractor was rolling over me — I ended up face down in the mud on an electric fence,” recalls Vaudine. “I remember the helicopter coming in and was worried where they would land — it’s funny how your mind works in a situation like that.” She is incredibly thankful for the assistance she received and continues to make progress with her recovery. The service’s annual appeal is underway with sponsors, Northpower and Top Energy, matching public donations, dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $150,000.

Need more energy? Today we look at health problems caused or defined by extreme fatigue. The most obvious is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) but is associated with most autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. In these conditions the fatigue can seriously reduce quality of life. I know this too well having suffered with CFS from late 20’s to my early 40’s. In many cases the underlying disease state causing the fatigue is incurable but there is still much we can do through targeted nutritional therapy to improve energy levels. Most of our energy, as ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is produced within our cell energy factories — our amazing mitochondria. These highly specialised cell organelles take high energy food compounds from carbohydrates, fats and proteins then break these down to produce the ATP we need. A common feature of many of these problems is the inability of our cell mitochondria to sufficient energy.

Top: Dan O’Reilly and Russell Procter — NEST pilots Bottom: Thankful to be rescued; Vaudine Tutill (left) and Mike Bickers (right)

While the rescue helicopters have emergency flights well covered, a retired businessman and aircraft pilot is fulfilling another need in the Northland community — flying patients in hardship from remote locations to hospitals. “Improving lives one flight at a time” is the aim of Lance Weller of Tutukaka who has set up the first Angel Flight Charity in New Zealand. The charitable service has operated in Australia for many years but was transplanted here by Mr Weller earlier this year. Using their own planes, Mr Weller along with other volunteer pilots fly patients in financial need to faraway hospitals for non-emergency appointments. The service is free of charge and patients require a medical referral and clearance to fly. Angel Flight NZ has now done eight missions, all from Kaitaia to Auckland.

There has been a great deal of research into mitochondrial dysfunction and extreme fatigue states. One study, “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Mitochondrial Dysfunction” was conducted at Oxford University (S. Myhill, N. Booth and J. McLaren-Howard, 2009). They compared the ATP output of 71 people with CFS and compared them to 53 normal people. They concluded that a “remarkable correlation is observed between the degree of mitochondrial dysfunction and the severity of the disease.” Other researchers such as Martin Pall have identified the mitochondrial processes affected by CFS, Fibromyalgia and other problems. My first goal with people with CFS and other mitochondrial problems is to saturate tissues with the most potent antioxidants to mop up the free radicals and to help re-build critical antioxidant enzyme systems. We then target the actual mitochondrial problem by adding cocktail of nutrients and co factors. These can be anything from B vitamins, to CoQ10 to exotic sounding compounds such as R-Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L Carnitine. These all work to help stressed cells manufacture energy more efficiently. Interestingly, when working with people with Polymyalgia, Parkinson’s and MS the first improvement most notice is an improvement in energy. If we can re-build our energy processes we can go a long way to helping people improve their quality of life. Over time this increases the chance of improving the underlying problem. Attitudes to nutrient losses changing Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

I recently attended the annual NZ Grassland Association Conference, this time held in Gore in Southland. There was a record attendance of 400 farmers, consultants, researchers, fertiliser and seed representatives, farm merchants, university students and representatives from Regional Councils. The research focus on ways to mitigate adverse effects of farming on the environment continues unabated, with reducing nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions from dairy farms, especially

urine patches, and reducing losses from N and P fertiliser being two major areas of study. There is plenty of evidence that the nitrification inhibitor DCD, sold under

‘Law to your door’ service A new model of law firm known as ‘virtual law firms’ is emerging in the legal market in response to fierce competition and economic uncertainties. One such company is Virtual Law Ltd, a ‘law to your door’ practice based in Whangarei but servicing clients through out New Zealand. “Virtual Law was established to provide an innovative practice away from the traditional approach that offers accessibility, flexibility and a forward thinking and adaptable legal service to meet our clients’ needs,” says Principal Lawyer and founder Miriam Hollins. The model is a move away from the more conventional law firm and entails lawyers working from a virtual office and visiting client’s at home or work to suit their needs. Money saved on overheads means fixed legal fees and

clients need not worry about unexpectedly high costs. “A mobile service, where we visit clients at their homes or workplaces, provides a practical solution to modern needs — this means visiting clients after hours, including weekday evenings and weekends. “We believe our service will be of particular interest to farmers who may not want to take time away from the farm to come to town and our flexibility means we can see them at a time that suits them. We also specialise in estate and succession planning which can be especially important to farming families and businesses.” Virtual Law is open throughout the Christmas and New Year period and will also be at the Northland Field Days in February 2013.

Fixed Prices, Mobile Service,

the names eco-N (a spray) and DcN (a granule), reduces N losses from recent urine patches, but also increasing evidence that their benefits for overall pasture production are as little as 2%. However, a cost of around $100/ha per application suggests that it is not going to become widely used without incentives or legislation. Other means of reducing N losses from urine patches include controlled grazing periods, with the cows being kept on pads or in cow homes in between grazing, so that the excreta can be collected and applied evenly over paddocks, as is done with dairy shed effluent. However, there are considerable costs, both capital and operational, to this solution.

little is released into the urine patch by the action of the cow raising its tail to urinate. It may sound a little ‘left-field’ to some, but to me it is more rational than keeping cows on pads or in homes for most of the time. I have been trialing some ways of doing this for a few years now, and am becoming increasingly confident that a simple, cheap design will be found in the not too distant future. Watch this space!

The essential problem is that although ryegrass-based pasture is a relatively economic and easily-managed feed, it contains excessive N in the form of protein relative to the cow’s ability to eat it to gain the energy. Most of the excess protein is excreted in the urine, in the form of urea, at rates of 500-1000 kg N/ha in the urineaffected patch. This is vastly more than the pasture can recover, and most of it ends up being leached as nitrate or lost to the atmosphere as gases, including the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide.

Coming back to the Conference, I presented with Dr Zaman from Ballance, a reassessment of RPR research in NZ, in particular looking at the length of the ‘lag-phase’, the period from the start of using RPR to when it is performing at least as well as superphosphate. Our reassessment found that this was no more than two years, except in the case of soils with high P retention (also rather misleadingly called ASC or anion ‘storage’ capacity). Where the soil P retention is over 80%, the lag-phase can be a few years longer. The easiest way to avoid any lag-phase is to use a mix of RPR and soluble P fertiliser, preferably DAP or TSP, for the first few years. Remember that about 7% elemental sulphur (S) will typically need to be incorporated.

So what are the solutions? I think a two-fold strategy is required. The first part is to find alternative pasture mixtures that can maintain the same milk solids production with a lower herbage N content. The second is to use the cow to treat its own urine, by having a small container of inhibitor attached to the cow, set so a

Amoung the many benefits of RPR, one of the most important is the greatly reduced loss of P in run-off into waterways. This fact is now becoming known by Regional Councils, and represents a simple and effective, no-cost option for farmers to reduce P losses in sensitive catchments.

Dairy Housing

Bill Guest, Farmers of New Zealand

Too Good to Fail — ‘The feeling was, surely if the Banks lend us the money, they must think we can afford to pay for it.’ The Ministry for Primary Industries Pastoral Farm Monitoring Report makes sobering reading. Rural debt has increased from $46 billion to $50 billion and dairy farm debt forms $33 billion of that. It’s estimated hard core debt totalling around $20 billion is being held by only 2,200 farmers, representing an average of $10 million per farm and these are highly vulnerable under the present Fonterra final payout predictions, based on a $5.25 per kilogram milk solids payout, which is now looking realistic and could see half the country’s dairy farmers fail to break even after paying farm working expenses and interest. On-farm dairy costs averaging $3.80 per kilogram of milk solids, are twice the rate of the Consumer Price Index. When former Prime Minister David Lange and Roger Douglas of the second Labour Government introduced their far-ranging freemarket financial reforms in the 1980’s, 500 farmers went to the wall, losing their farms at mortgagee sales. Farmers marched on Parliament, picketed Banks and there was general outrage over the high interest rates of 20% plus, that were being raped off the farming community by the nation’s banks. Farmers also paid principal. We remember Jim Bolger’s National Government bailing out the Bank of New Zealand because they had a $600 million liquidity problem. Rural support leaders such as Stan Hayes in Northland, Eddie Glass and others in the rest of the country, led major rebellions in defence of farmers. The financial crisis facing farmers now is not high interest rate charges, but too much debt. The papers are full of farms being forceably sold up and farm company liquidations. One has to question the Banks’ responsibility for this current farm crisis. The old Rural Bank guidelines that you borrowed

no more than four times your gross income, debt servicing was limited to 25% of your gross income and the number of farms that you could own were monitored by the Land Aggregation Act. One has to question, have the banks today been irresponsible in the way that the old lending criteria have been thrown out the window. What were the Bank Risk Managers thinking when bank lending has put 2,200 dairy farmers at risk. In 2008 the Wall Street financial crisis hit America. The U.S. economy was on the brink of collapse. It was argued that the banks had been given too much freedom, after the government had removed many regulations. Seventy major mortgage companies in the U.S. failed, including Lehman Bros Investment Bank, followed by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, who guaranteed a large percentage of U.S. mortgages. The Chinese had hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the two companies. The U.S. Banks knew that many of their mortgages were risky. The Banks started buying insurance that covered defaulting mortgages. Where the borrower failed, the insurance company paid the default and this allowed the banks to cover their losses, so they could invest in more loans and make more money. The banks charged huge fees to borrowers. The National Government has given New Zealand banks financial guarantees. However, this does not extend to providing direct government assistance to those farmers now facing foreclosure of their farms. It is clear the government does not view itself as the people’s safety net. However, those farmers who believe that their banks have not treated them fairly, should complain to the Banking Ombudsman and seek professional advice. Farmers of New Zealand provides professional services.

NORTHERN FOREST PRODUCTS

by Gary Leslie

Strong demand for NZ logs in China continues to underpin increased harvest activity throughout the country. In September alone China took a 1 Million JAS M3 of NZ logs, a record for that month. With Northland rainfall in October less than half normal levels, ground conditions are set for summer logging and woodlot harvesting is getting into full swing with a number of new crews popping up throughout the region. Log prices are not exceptional but they are fair with November A Grade prices at Marsden Point in the vicinity of $100 JAS M3 and Pruned log prices in

the vicinity of $140 JAS M3, depending on the exporter. Forest owners and forest operators have benefited from stability over the last 12 months without traditional boom and bust export prices. Reduced log volume to Asian markets from Russia and North America has helped the supply and demand equation with NZ filling the gap. Inventory is well balanced with cfr prices expected to firm US$1-2 over Nov-Dec. Shipping rates have not been volatile, neither has the NZ dollar, although stubbornly high above 0.80 for some time now. Domestic log prices are up a little but access to these mills is limited by over supply. Saw mills value relationship, log quality and consistent supply. The largest timber processors have long term contracted supply agreements or own their own forests. These include CHH Woodproducts NZ with mills near Whangarei and Juken New Zealand (JNL) with mills at Kaitaia.

It has recently been announced that Sumitomo Corporation is purchasing JNL’s Northland forests, a significant transaction for Northland being approx 36,000 Ha. I understand the decision is currently with the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) and you can monitor progress with this and other OIO decisions by visiting their website. If you are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the ETS, I understand fully. The latest twist is NZ’s withdrawal from the second phase of the Kyoto Protocol. It is the Kyoto Protocol that has given our NZU’s (carbon credits) legs however with Kyoto compliant carbon prices collapsing faster than European economy’s, I’m actually relaxed about this change of tack by the government. Alignment with the heavy emitting countries that surround us may be just the fillip for NZU demand we are looking

for. We already know Europe has a low view of our plantation forest carbon sinks and the recent decision in Durban to remove the ‘fast forest fix’ for the second Kyoto commitment period only highlights this. Moving on to forest health, if you have seen your pine trees drop their needles and look like they are dying only to re-emerge with fresh needles in the spring, don’t panic just yet. Your trees most likely have Physiological Needle Blight (not Dothistroma needle blight). This condition is increasingly apparent not only in Northland but throughout the North Island. Some trees are dying but most are recovering their foliage but no doubt growth is being checked. brought to you by to include specific detail on the location of the sample. On the environmental front, a joint initiative between the Northland Regional Council (NRC) and forest industry leaders in Northland has seen the launch this year of “Forestry Earthworks & Harvesting Guidelines for Northland”. This is a great tool and resource for woodlot owners and you should obtain a copy. The general idea is that if you follow the guidelines you won’t have any issues harvesting under Permitted Activity (PA) rules avoiding what may be unnecessary time and expense obtaining resource consent. The guidelines will be the basis for NRC interpreting compliance of PA rules and I see it as really helpful with lots of colour pictures too. Another development this year is in the area of health and safety in forestry operations with the imminent release of the Approved Code of Practice for Safety and Health in Forest Operations following a substantial review combining the existing Bush Code of Practice. It is due to be launched on 5th December 2012.

Land owners are increasingly taking an interest in the safety of activities and operators on their land and knowing there is adherence by contractors to an up to date Code of Practice will go a long way. I recently signed a woodlot agreement with a farming couple who requested more detail in the agreement around health & safety and I really respect them for that. The war on drugs continues and a drug and alcohol free workplace is something forestry leaders in Northland aspire to and I am right behind them. They have made great progress over the last few years with a comprehensive regional drug testing initiative in place and it’s all about providing a safe work environment in the forest for everyone. The government is not helping them one bit with their uncoordinated and delayed response to legislation around synthetic cannabis and over-the-counter legal highs so the sooner politicians sort that one out the better.

Fishing, Hunting Outdoors Nature’s design reels in the big ones We all know that the shape of a shark works well when it comes to catching fish — the hungry predators of the ocean aren’t known for their lack of appetite, and they have been honed into swift hunters by millions of years of evolution. Similarly, the Predator kontiki (a favourite of Kiwi anglers) has been fettled and engineered to perfection over the years, developing into the

sleek and deadly system seen today. That’s because it’s the passionate project of a group of New Zealand fishermen who really know their stuff — a team who promise you years of fun and successful catches with the latest iteration of their creation. With up to 54 pounds of thrust from its motor, controlled by both an innovative power management system and with the option of an advanced ‘autopilot’, the Predator is made to

slice through the waves, handling the rough conditions of the west coast when other rigs would fail. Even snags and foul-ups are avoided with an inbuilt safety system to protect the motor. For fishing fun this summer, take a look at the latest advancement in kontiki technology — a shape literally millions of years in the making and all the better for it.

A Ranger for the price of an ATV? For the same price as a big-bore ATV, why not buy a Polaris Ranger 400? At $13,475 plus GST, the Ranger 400 is more affordable than many big-bore ATVs on the market. But with the Polaris Ranger 400, you can tow more, carry more and seat two — it’s a screaming bargain by comparison. With Ranger 400 you get more done, more quickly and in more comfort. True to its heritage, Ranger 400 has more strength, towing and carrying capacity than other mid-size utility vehicles — but with all the comforts and ride quality that has helped make Polaris the world’s largest Off Road Vehicles manufacturer. So how much smaller is it? Ranger 400 is 16cm shorter and features 8cm less width and height. This compact size, when combined with the tighter turning circles possible with Turf-Mode, makes it the ideal size for orchards and vineyards. Despite the smaller size, there is still plenty of room to seat two. The safety focussed will love the Ranger 400. As with all the 2010

Rangers, Ranger 400 features USA OSHA* Certified Roll-Over Protection Structure (ROPS). In addition, an exclusive of the Ranger 400 is the optional Speedkey system. This tough and versatile vehicle still tows more and carries more than competitors with a class leading towing capacity of 567kg and a payload of 453.6kg. This includes the exclusive Lock & Ride Cargo System which features a 226.8kg carrying capacity. All of this is powered by a 455cc high output engine and a top speed of 64.4km. The Ranger 400 boasts 29hp, the highest horsepower engine in its class.

Features in the Ranger 400 include On Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Turf Mode. The OnDemand AWD ensures the Ranger 400 can tackle the muddiest and rockiest terrains, while Turf Mode means you can perform tighter and easier turns without tearing up your grass. Hardest working features • Class-leading 453.6kg payload and 567kg towing • 455 cc petrol CVT Automatic — 29hp • 64.4km/h top speed • 226.8kg dumping box with Lock

Passed the test Three or four years ago Jason Frost ordered a chip for his Mitsubishi Pajero from Germany. Although a little skeptical as to whether these claimed ‘30% more power and 10% fuel savings’ were true — when the package arrived on his doorstep he set about to install it, with great excitement and anticipation.

FEnDt tractors

new styling and models technology leaders 70hp to 396hp

To his pleasant surprise it took all of about seven minutes to install but the real test was still to come: Does it work? Fueled with youth excitement he backs down the drive and sets two hot lap trials around the block. Returning home with a smile covering his entire face the unit gets the big tick. Still to be truly tested though was the claimed fuel savings. Having been on a long distance trip to Napier the previous weekend he recorded the fuel computer’s average at 12.5 ltrs per hundred K, and heading back on the same trip this coming weekend this would be a simple test. The result? A remarkable average of 9.6 ltrs per hundred K on trip two! Proud as punch with this effective non-expensive unit Jason decides he is in the wrong industry. After getting a few in for his mates, all with great results, he and his wife decided to give this thing a go. And so became ECU Chips Ltd. Now ECU Chips Ltd is New Zealand’s premier diesel chip tuning and performance upgrade business.

Whether it be your John Deere, your hilux, your harvester or big rig truck an ECU chip will give your engine approximately 30% more power and reach a 9-12 % fuel saving. With

prices of fuel ever increasing so is the constant demand for these premium products. All of ECU Chips’ diesel upgrade units are made and manufactured in Germany to the highest German engineering standards. Their products are bought direct from the supplier and sold direct to the end user which significantly reduces the final price. In short they offer a premium product at a non-premium price. ECU Chips Ltd now have supplier agreements with the worlds leading brands including KW Systems who have over 25 years experience within the industry. Kw systems have been operating for over 25 years, the directors were involved in the development of the original VW turbo engine. Dairying Soil Matters — with Peter Burton

How improved soil structures lower fertiliser costs One of the functions of a healthy soil is the recycling of nutrient for plant uptake, and as soil becomes more efficient at holding onto nutrients the requirement for costly fertiliser input reduces The ability of soils to retain applied nutrient is based on a number of factors with good physical soil structures perhaps the most important, and physical soil structures can be measured accurately using Graham Shepherds Visual Soil Assessment developed here in New Zealand.

C&C Contract Electrical

When the physical structure is ideal, or somewhere close, beneficial soil organisms are able to breathe, carbon is sequestered and humus is rapidly developed. Humus is what is left when dead roots, dung and other litter on the soil surface is digested by soil organisms that breathe air. It’s stable and able to store large quantities of moisture and nutrient. Humus is sometimes referred to as the ‘glue’ in the soil and, because without humus soils cease to exist, it is regarded by many as more valuable than gold. Regardless, soils containing the most humus have the greatest growing potential and it is unwise to do anything that destroys it or limits its development. There are two factors that are universally accepted as contributors to the degradation of soil and therefore limit the development of humus. They are, excessive downward pressure by animal’s feet, and fertiliser nitrogen. A fair question is how much of each is excessive? By going to extremes the answer can start to be obtained, however as always it will depend on a number of factors. Cows creating mud behind wires in wet weather destroy humus, or at the very least limit its development. Air is squeezed from the soil and valuable top soil exposed with a subsequent loss of carbon and pasture production while natural repair takes place.

Good quality at a fair price

How much nitrogen is too much? Ask a dozen people and a dozen different answers are likely depending on the knowledge and experience of those asked, and whether or not they feel they have an immediate need for it. What we do know from twelve months of results from Nitrate Nitrogen leaching work carried out near Edgecumbe by Rotorua Lakes and Land Trust is that there is measurably less Nitrate N being leaked under carefully managed permanent rye and white clover pasture using less than 25kgN/ha annually than

under soils where pasture growth is driven by regular urea applications. The farm applying less than 25kgN/ha has grown in excess of 18 tonne of DM/ha in each of the last two seasons and over 1,465kg of milk solids per hectare has been produced in each of those seasons. This is at least twenty per cent more pasture than a typical N driven programme, with almost all of the extra feed produced from mid-October until mid-May. Based on Ministry for the Environment information the Nitrate N levels contained in leachate from this property are no more than natural background levels. Where Nitrate N levels are low it is likely that the loss of other nutrients is also low. There is no down side to a healthy well structured, biologically active soil. More feed of higher quality is produced during the main growing part of the season. More of all nutrients is retained in the soil and made available for plant growth, with less being lost to groundwater. Creating and maintaining a soil capable of producing in excess of 18 tonne of DM every year requires an understanding of plant nutrient requirements as well as astute and thoughtful daily management. Two key nutrient inputs for high performance are calcium and magnesium, with dolomite from Golden Bay being the magnesium product of choice when the focus is on maintaining excellent physical soil structures, and nurturing animals capable of outstanding performance with very low ill-health costs. Hoof Print With Fred Hoekstra

Safety first approach to hoof trimming Can you restrain your cow so that she is comfortable and you are safe? Optimum cow restraint requires three principles to be in place; i) the cow needs to be comfortable; ii) the operator needs to be safe; iii) the operator needs to be in control. The starting point for a cow’s comfort is the surface she is standing on. A slippery surface is not ideal, but even more importantly, the cow must be standing on a flat, level surface or one that slopes up. No matter what crush you use, a cow does not like it if she is facing downhill and you are lifting her back feet. Purpose-built hoof trimming crushes have belly straps to support the cow when she loses her grip and falls over. A belly strap also calms her down. Cows relax when you put pressure on their

belly. Some well known crushes have two belly straps — one under the brisket and one just in front of the udder. It is better to have just the brisket strap, because if a cow sits down on the second strap she will be very uncomfortable as there is no rib cage there to support her and all the pressure will go straight onto the gut. Cows tend to kick at it, but will not stand up to release the pressure.

down for any reason, there is a very high risk of injury, such as a broken leg or dislocated hip. Lifting from the hock is much more comfortable for the cow, and because she can still lean on the raised leg there is minimal risk of injury. We use the WOPA Cattle Crush for safety and efficiency whenever a cow needs to be treated individually.

The crush comes complete with a walkthrough head bail that can be opened and closed from behind the cow, treated thick wooden floor, wide brisket (belly) strap with quick release clip, front foot support blocks, back leg strap with quick release clip, two safety winches with 2:1 reductions and a stabilising bar.

Most people like to have a leg tied up just above the claw against a bar. It makes the leg sit more rigid but should the cow go

Milking healthier profits with modern technology Mastitis is a key issue faced by modern dairy farmers, especially as herd sizes increase It’s not just a health issue for livestock — it can impact the farmer’s bottom line in a number of ways, especially as controls around the cell count in milk become more stringent. A healthy herd means ‘cleaner’ milk, better returns and a better return on your investment, both in time, machinery and cattle. The traditional post-milking routines used to combat mastitis can prove time consuming, and they are not always as effective as automating the process. So this is just what European company ADF have done with their latest advancement in milking technology — introducing a system which automatically dips and flushes, keeping both livestock and machinery hygienically clean. As well as the time and labour saving, the ADF system slashes crosscontamination among the herd — every cow at every milking receives clean liners. And the financial benefits aren’t limited to simply promoting animal health; by removing the need to dip and flush the clusters manually there’s no chance of any being missed, and throughput is increased. It all means less time working in the shed and more time taking care of all those other vital jobs around the farm! The ADF system is the first in the world to completely automate the dipping of cow’s teats and the flushing of liners — and the best news is that it is easy to install. A staggered installation can be arranged around milkings with no disruption to usual farm routines, meaning that there’s no drop in

New Zealand Groundspread Fertiliser`s Association President Stuart Barwood. “Spreadmark is the fertiliser placement quality assurance programme,” says Stuart. “The independent Spreadmark test verifies the actual capability of the fertiliser spreader and ensures that trucks meet the Spreadmark standard set by the Fertiliser Quality Council.” The Spreadmark scheme accredits fertiliser spreading companies, when they have certified spreading machinery, trained operators and an appropriate quality management system to ensure that farmer/grower fertiliser application outcomes are met and environmental sustainability is protected. Precision placement of fertiliser requires many things to be well done. It depends on skilled trained operators, tested spreading equipment and fertilisers with known particle sizes. It is the integration of these factors that is at the heart of the Spreadmark scheme. Registration is voluntary but all groundspread

operators are encouraged to become involved. Spreadmark is promoted to farmers and regulators as an independent audit which ensures that both farmers/ growers and Regional Councils have confidence in the programme. New Zealand Groundspread Fertiliser`s Association President Stuart Barwood says “farmers need to be convinced that using Spreadmark accredited companies makes good financial and environmental sense in their farming business.” “Independent research by the Centre for Precision Agriculture at Massey University has shown that poor quality spreading on dairy farms can cost a farmer $60 a hectare,” Stuart Barwood said. “The figure for sheep and beef farms is less but still considerable. In addition we have some Regional Councils insisting Spreadmark operators are used to spread fertiliser in sensitive environmental areas.” Environment Canterbury has recognised the Spreadmark quality

The precise way to grow

Rex Browne has been involved with farming his whole life — growing up in a family with a strong rural tradition and with a lifelong affinity for machinery as well as for the land. For the past 20 years he has not only run a successful 450 acre dairy farm near Paparoa, — he has also built a solid reputation as one of the leading agricultural contractors in the North.

It’s always best to come from the perspective of experience, and Rex values old-fashioned qualities like punctuality, honesty and a job well done just as much as he respects the power of today’s modern

“The message for farmers is that the benefits of Spreadmark can be measured in dollar and environmental terms.” There are currently 88 Spreadmark accredited spreading companies and nine approved Spreadmark testers. The Spreadmark scheme is governed by the Fertiliser Quality Council consisting of representatives from fertiliser user groups, NZGFA and fertiliser manufacturers. The Spreadmark scheme operates closely with its sister scheme, Fertmark. The two schemes operate to ensure that quality fertiliser is produced to Fertmark standards, and mixed and spread to Spreadmark standards. This assures the best agronomic outcomes while at the same time environmental protection is assured.

The farming professionals who do it all

“From moving clay to baling hay — we do it all” is the motto of his eponymous contracting company, and Rex really means it! With the latest in modern farming machinery there’s no job around the farm which this proud professional and his team can’t handle.

agricultural machines. This season Rex Browne Contracting have added a modern high-capacity square baler to their repertoire, allowing them to efficiently process silage for dairy operations. The larger sized bales proved popular last year, and this new addition to Rex’s machinery fleet can tackle many gradients of land — in fact, on a recent job, connected to their powerful New Holland tractor, the team processed 180 bales in a single evening! An internal chopper means that more silage fits into each bale, and the resultant bales are easier to load and easier for the herd to digest at feed out time. Rex and his two full-time staff (skilled machinery operators Brian McCarroll and Dennis Morgan) pride themselves on efficient, cost effective service, saving their clients money. Many of Rex’s customers have been with him for two decades — a real legacy of trust.

Farming for a productive future They are the farm professionals who farmers trust to boost their productivity and secure a season of healthy profits — across all kinds of agriculture, from diary to beef farming, through to crop cultivation and laying in silage for the winter. New Zealand’s agricultural contractors are hard at work this spring taking care of those big jobs on the farm which have often become too large or too specialised for individual farmers to handle alone. In olden times the average Kiwi farmer relied on literal horsepower and a suite of simple machines and hand tools to run every aspect of his operation. But as technology has increased and science has made farming more intensive, contractors have stepped in to fulfill many specialist roles in the seasonal cultivation of the land. This is never more apparent than in the spring, when big machinery is often seen working its way across the verdant pastures, harrowing the soil, applying seed for new crops and harvesting bales of silage. The simple fact is that the cost inherent in the complex, custom-built machinery used for such tasks is now beyond the reach of many farmers, who must carefully manage their investment. This means calling in specialists for pasture management, de-pugging and disc cultivation,

professional spreaders to add nutrients to the soil, and silage experts to mow, rake, bale or pit the winter feed which keeps our dairy herds the best in the world. Luckily, specialisation comes with the advantage of in-depth knowledge, and lowered overheads for farmers in terms of economies of scale. It’s simply sound economic sense to hire in a contractor with a huge silage wagon coupled to a monster 200-horsepower-plus tractor, rather than purchasing the same machinery and having it lie idle in the barn over the winter. Good contractors know their area of expertise well, and are trusted by their clients to take care of the big jobs, leaving farmers free to attend to other aspects of their business. continued on page 27…

Contractors are also called in to manage the ground-level infrastructure of farms — digging, leveling and repairing the ground so that the day to day business of farming doesn’t get bogged down in mud, or run out of water! Dams, effluent ponds, roads, races, pads and even the sites for new sheds and homes are all prepared by specialists, commanding diggers, trucks and bulldozers which it would be uneconomical for every farm to own, but which add mechanical muscle to a contractor’s fleet. Many contractors have their own limerock quarries for just this purpose. A key role in modern agri-business is played by science — and at the forefront of agricultural chemistry are those professionals who maintain the correct nutrient balance in the soil to guarantee fertile crops. Just as important as the heavy machinery which tills the fields is what goes in before the seeds are sown, and it’s standard practice for fert companies to send representatives versed in soil science around to visit their customers and draw up detailed fertiliser spreading maps. Once again, the kind of intensive, specialised knowledge inherent in

these professionals would be almost impossible for every farmer to study individually — but by working in partnership the land can be rendered more productive year in and year out. The first agricultural contractors in New Zealand started out with bullocks and horses in colonial Canterbury, but today theirs is a thriving sector of the agricultural industry — one which is sure to become even more vital to the Kiwi economy as farming becomes more intensive, more scientific and more reliant on cutting-edge machinery technology.

coat of stain for your existing decking might be in order. Indoors, freshen the whole look of your home with a designer kitchen makeover! The keen home chef will be able to whip up gourmet treats in style with a new suite of appliances, framed to perfection among gleaming benchtops and accented with the latest euro-style tapware. Along with a ‘facelift’ for the bathroom, these two areas alone can substantially affect the value of your home at sale — as well as creating a stylish, personalised living environment. Bathrooms are another area in need of keen attention which can add value to your home. The choices available to the modern home redecorator when it comes to fittings and fixtures are truly staggering, but classical elegance never goes out of style. New floor coverings including waterproof wood-look finishes and seamless tiles for step-free shower areas complete the look, but always remember the most important bathroom fixture of all — a powerful and quiet extractor fan. These can be discreetly hidden away among lighting clusters, and they’ll pay you back with less damp, drips and mould in the grout for years to come. Flooring is of immense importance when choosing not

just the feel of your home under your feet, but also the complete palette of colours you choose to live amongst. Developments in carpet and sectional wooden flooring now mean that a soft, warm surface is available to suit any style, from the classical beauty of polished hardwood to the sumptuous luxury of wool. In fact, many synthetic and blended carpets are nearly indistinguishable from wool at first glance, and some even come with stain-resisting technology to keep them pristine through the rigours of kids, pets and spills! To complete the perfect picture of a home ready for the hot summer days, consider the invisible — the air which allows your home to ‘breathe’. Both ventilation systems and heat pumps have proven a popular addition to kiwi homes, which are often humid in summer or damp in winter without a little technological respiration! Silent, power-saving modern ventilation systems and air conditioning solutions are the ultimate finishing touch to create a healthy, comfortable home. No matter what your project, big 0 9 4 2 0 4 4 4 1 or small, the first step is always to seek advice from the professionals! Give the businesses on these pages a call and talk about what you’d like to achieve — they’re all ready to spring into action this spring and make your home that little bit more special. WORKSHOPS

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Auction 12.30pm, Thurs 6 Dec 2012 (unless sold prior)

This well located 215ha dairy unit impresses as a farm that is both a sound investment and is capable of production increases. Last season’s 115,000kg/ms from 330 cows achieved on primarily a grass only basis, resulting in perhaps the lowest cost of production ratio in Northland (details available). In 10 titles, flat to easy rolling contour and new grasses throughout. 2012 silage already harvested last week.

A’Fare Reception & Conference Lounge, 197 Lower Dent St, Whangarei,

This is one of the best medium sized dairy units we are bringing to the Northland market this spring. This is worthy of your serious inspection.

Practicing good practice

by Bob Cathcart, Land Management Specialist, Northland Regional Council

To survive and thrive long-term, land management systems need to be economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. That’s the heart of ‘good practice’, and it’s much more than environmental window dressing. Each of the primary sector groups — pastoral farming, horticulture and forestry — is now promoting ‘good practice’ for their respective industries. Pastoral farming groups such as Beef and Lamb New Zealand, New Zealand Deer Farmers Association and dairy companies like Fonterra are working with their members or suppliers to optimise production while reducing their impact on the environment. Like all quality assurance or quality management programmes, the aim is to achieve continuing improvement. It’s about ‘good practice’, not ‘best practice’, acknowledging that we can always do better. The Northland Regional Council has worked with each of the industry groups as they have developed and implemented their codes of practice, encouraging measures to ensure sustainable production, optimising production while protecting soil and water resources.

• Excluding stock from streams so they don’t trample the bed and banks or contaminate water with dung and urine; • Providing a piped supply of good quality stock water; • Maintaining a dense pasture or crop cover to prevent sediment, nutrients and faecal matter runoff; • Avoiding pugging and soil compaction; • Improving soil structure including building organic matter; • Creating sediment and nutrient traps, and small wetlands, to capture run-off;

It helps to have a plan of action setting out what you plan to do and when. It doesn’t need to be fancy — it can be as simple as an aerial photo of the farm on which the works are marked, a spreadsheet of costing and a timetable for implementing your plan. The council’s land management advisors can help you prepare such a plan — call us on 0800 002 004. We can also provide background information like soils, maps, rainfall data and other data to help underpin good practice on your land.

• Controlling gully, stream bank or slip erosion; • Protecting bush on erosion-prone land; • Protecting significant indigenous wetlands; and • Working within a nutrient management plan.
