ForestTECH 2013 will have a twin focus on safety in the forest and in steep country tree harvesting, with keynote speakers coming from North America. Forest contractors and managers from Australia and Chile will join technology providers and equipment suppliers. The conference comes while Labour is calling for an inquiry into the economics of forestry processing, with leader David Cunliffe saying importing timber for the Christchurch rebuild while New Zealand mills were closing was ‘lunacy’. Last month Rotorua's Tachikawa Forest Products was placed in receivership, with the company unable to

secure log supply. Prime Minister John Key said Tachikawa was not reflective of the whole industry. Finance Minister Bill English says that with the economy picking up the workers should be able to find employment elsewhere. "Our primary production industries are growing — they've got near record high prices for their products overseas, business confidence is as high as it's been for quite some time and the opportunity for those workers will be better than it has been in any time over the past six or seven years," Mr English said.

More animals in science tests The National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee has released its annual report with the Ministry for Primary Industries statistics detailing a 7.6 per cent decrease in the number of animals used in science — testing and teaching — compared to the previous year — but says the overall figure for a three-year period is up. “While it is always good to see a drop in the number of animals used in research, teaching and testing, the rolling three-year average reflects that the three-year reporting cycle was marginally up,” says chair, Dr Virginia Williams. “Records of the number of animals used in long-term projects are not reported annually, but every three years, or when the project is completed. The rolling three — year average is a truer reflection of animal use in New Zealand. “Given NAEAC’s focus on the research, testing and teaching, it’s certainly gratifying to see the lowest number of animals since 2006 reported in the ‘high impact’ or ‘very high impact’ categories.” The committee is undertaking a new research programme this summer looking into the decision-making processes of animal ethics committees, or AECs.

The 2012 NAEAC annual report has just been released and while chair, Dr Williams says no specific problems have been highlighted in the regular independent reviews of AECs, “this is an opportunity for the committee to get an indication of how the committees are operating across the board. “These committees play a critical role in reducing unnecessary harm and suffering for animals used in science, and good decision making is critical to the effective functioning of the regulatory system.” She said. “NAEAC will use the research information gathered to determine how it can better tailor advice depending on each committee’s individual needs,” says Dr Williams.

ay Missionary James Shepherd was invited and granted land here by local Maori. He made his home in the district in 1838. Most of Tauranga Valley is still farmed by his descendants. Radar Hill was Shepherd land also. It rises above the farms and its forest is the refuge of kiwi and 100-year — old kauri. Taken into Crown ownership, it was of strategic importance in World

War Two and eventually became a Conservation Reserve. Tony Shepherd’s home looks across to Radar Hill. He is a descendant of James and Harriet’s son, Henry George. He and wife Olive have raised their family here. Up the hill is the site of Ellen and George Shepherd’s home and just below

Olive’s garden a colonial steep pitched roof peers above old roses — a 1906 homestead surviving under new iron. Tony and Olive built their home in 1964 on their farm that had been divided out from the Shepherd block. “When we came in the old cowshed was falling down. We built our shed on the site and started milking 40 cows,” says Tony. Valley flats were drained,

intensive supplements put on and a farm pond and dams built. More recently a gravity feed tank has been installed, primarily for the Waitangi Block, which reaches back to Whangaroa Harbour. This land has been added to the farm, together with a smaller coastal block close to where daughter Beth occupies the ex sharemilker’s house. Both were previously Shepherds’ properties. This

might be considered tradition — “Blocks have swapped back and forth between family members since Samuel Ebenezer, known as the first Shepherd farmer here, handed on land. He didn’t marry,” explains Tony. Tony was one of the last farmers in the valley dairying. It was somewhat of a wrench to the family selling the herd but economies of scale necessitated it. “Fifty years ago virtually everyone here dairy farmed,” says Tony. From running some dairy beef he moved completely to dry stock in 2005. The Shepherds have 240 acres of flats and moderate hill country. Several bush blocks have been fenced off and kauri planted into them. It is now well into spring and most of the cows have calved. For beef animals Black Polled Angus is the terminal sire. However Tony’s father had a Hereford stud and Tony has put a Hereford bull across some of the Friesian cows he kept. He has also introduced Meuse Rhine Issel (MRI) a rare breed, and Murray Grey crosses. He is aiming towards his

cattle eventually having a uniform colour. There is also the farm’s multi-coloured sheep flock. Tony has bought several Dorper rams and is exploring a market for the wool.

Olive and Tony are often reminded of the history of the farm. “We’re always finding pieces of crockery,” says Olive. Occasionally a resilient rose comes to light which she coaxes back into viability. The Waitangi block track runs close to old cart trails to arrive at Touwai Bay, Whangaroa harbour, where the family cemetery stands and James and Harriet Shepherds’ resting place. Nearby is the site of the Waitangi Mission house and their early home. James held horticultural interests and figs, grapes, and fruit trees survive from his plantings.

James died in 1882. The 100 years since have been observed by Tony’s father making a concrete cross and the family erecting a cairn here. Hopefully this will mark another 100 years of Shepherds living and farming in the Tauranga Valley and district.

ORGANIC DAIRYING LEADS TO FUTURE FOR YOUNG FARMING COUPLE BY CYNTHIA MATTHEWS

he Gardners find the lighter framed breed more suitable for the clay soils as the flat to rolling contoured farm can become very wet and puggy over the winter months. The couple share milked on the family farm for a year before buying it in 2001 and have added 25 hectares to the original 160ha unit. They have also bought a run-off 5km down the road. Cow numbers were reduced from 420 under conventional dairying to the current 330 now being milked. Milk production, crop, pasture and herd

health have all shown positive results from the new regime. The established organic 46ha runoff was bought in 2008. Nathan and Sharleen realised that it would not work as a stand alone organic unit. Around the same time Fonterra approached them asking them if they would be interested in going organic. “We felt we were farming close to organic anyway,” says Nathan. The ‘gnarly drought’ (as Sharleen describes it) in the first year of conversion didn’t deter them. “You have to be ready and prepared for anything

that’s thrown at you. Planning ahead is crucial under this system as there’s no backstop — we are unable to buy in any feed such as palm kernel to help out if there’s a feed shortage.” Moving to organic has meant a total production drop of 10%. However, with the Organic Milk Premium of $1.05

this has not affected them. Nathan says the goal is to at least achieve the 100,000 milk solids which was the average produced off the farm prior to turning organic. Improved animal health is helping the couple achieve their goal. Problems like milk fever have markedly reduced,

measures that Nathan and Sharleen say are not only necessary but also underpin viability. “We’re constantly tweaking to do what we do better,” says Sharleen. The success of their efforts has been enhanced by the securing of a nearby market, Whangarei’s Grinning Gecko cheesemakers — it’s a winning association. The company’s award cheeses and yoghurts are all made from organic milk, much of it from Totara Creek Farm.

The farm has had a good winter with the oats crop well grown. Nathan is busy sowing 10ha of maize ready for harvesting late autumn to help see the

herd through next winter. The Gardners have averaged around 22 to 24 tonne with their maize crops. Any surplus grass becomes silage also. With all the feed produced on-farm, Nathan stores enough for 12 months to cope with any adversity. In recent years, the Gardners constructed a herd home which can house 230 cows over the cold and wet — invaluable for easing pugging and pasture management. The cows can be fed there and the grated floor allows effluent to be stored in the bunker below to be then applied onto maize and cropping areas. supported by an Agrisea animal tonic and backed by homeopathic remedies where necessary. “The remedies are 95% successful,” says Nathan. “If the animal doesn’t respond you’re probably using the wrong one.” Nathan believes healthy animals begin with healthy soils and he is pleased with the results from the Agrisea seaweed based soil conditioner and pasture foliar spray applied over the farm. “We used to have 12 to 16 worms per spade width, now we’re finding around the 30 plus.” Nathan describes the soil as sweeter and growing much less weeds.

Similarly, managing a vineyard is no easy task, and operating a top-rated gourmet restaurant is no job for the timid — just ask Gordon Ramsay. raising transferred across to deer, there were new disciplines to master. The deer population at Mahurangi River is raised solely for venison, not for velvet, so instigating a breeding programme was part of that learning process. In 2008 Shelley’s ability to learn and adapt was put to the test again, when she decided to add a winery to her portfolio. “It’s definitely been a lot of work,” she says, “but once again, those skills translated across. Being a primary producer, though there are a lot of big differences between deer and grapes, there are many things the same, too. Knowing how to read a soil analysis, knowing about nutrients and conditions — all of that knowledge has transferred from growing pasture to growing grapes.” The first vintages put down have proven to be stunning — Mahurangi River Winery’s 2011 chardonnay gained four and a half out of five stars, and their 2012 offering gained the full five. A gourmet restaurant on site has also gained rave reviews, with popular website TripAdvisor giving it top billing in the area.

Last month I discussed that a new Trust Act was recommended by the Law Commission and if the changes were accepted there would be implications for families with trusts. In this article I will deal with what would happen if there is a valid trust, but one to which matrimonial property has found its way into. As the law currently stands, unless the property enters a trust in bad faith the transaction cannot be unwound. The Property (Relationships) Act 1976 states that if relationship (matrimonial) property goes into a trust the person who has lost out can be compensated by receiving money from their partner or spouse or requiring trustees to pay income of the Trust to the person who has lost out.

The problem is that usually all the property is in the trust (the partner or spouse not owning anything of value) and at the same time the trust usually simply owns land and therefore has no income. The recommended change is that this provision be amended to provide that the Court make an order requiring the trustees of the trust to pay to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spouse or partner a specified sum of money from the trust, or to transfer any property of the trust. As can be seen by considering these two approaches, this is a big change. While previously there was no ability to get at â&#x20AC;&#x153;the assets of the trustâ&#x20AC;?, the recommended changes would do just that. So, in a situation where any joint property (potentially income, loans, cash assets, other investments, real estate etc) is put into a trust to protect it at the start of the relationship from a new partner or spouse, the Court will simply say â&#x20AC;&#x153;too badâ&#x20AC;? and take those assets right out from the trust. There will, in this case, be absolutely no protection. The recommendation also includes a change to the Family Proceedings Act 1980. Under that legislation the Court can currently vary the terms of a trust and when a â&#x20AC;&#x153;marriage or civil unionâ&#x20AC;? is â&#x20AC;&#x153;dissolvedâ&#x20AC;? the Law Commission seeks to change that to include de facto relationship and to change the triggering event from when a marriage or civil union is dissolved (two years after separation) to simply when the parties separate. This means that even if a couple has created a trust for legitimate purposes and has agreed to property going into it, as soon as they separate the Courts can vary the trust(s), that is, break the trust(s) apart into various pieces. This will obviously have massive implications for families who wish to structure their affairs to protect interests for future generations.

Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter service reaches a 25-year milestone next month and Northland Emergency Services Trust’s chairman John Bain is hoping for a highly successful fundraising appeal to mark the event. The first medical mission was flown on November 17, 1988 and since then more than 15,000 patients have been flown to emergency medical treatment. He says he thinks this is the only answer for a sustainable future.

SOIL is the stomach of the plant: please don’t feed it chemicals. We are a reflection of the soil’s health. EIGHTY to ninety-five percent of plant yield comes from the atmosphere, while only 2–5% comes from the soil (sources vary).

FERTILISER programmes must be based around the calcium content of your soil. If base saturation calcium is below 60%, you will virtually have to purchase fertiliser ad infinitum. Urea and other soluble fertiliser products are deadly to soil fungi.

SOIL fungi are responsible for retaining 100% of available calcium in the soil. It is a fallacy that one tonne of lime, or another product, is required to move soil pH by one point. The soil microbes have the ability to move the pH of your soil without the physical input of calcium.

NOT all N, P, K, Mg, S etc is the same. Organic forms are far superior to chemical forms, and some chemicals are worse than others. The bio-available forms of nutrients are the only healthy options.

THE correct base saturation figures for pasture are: Calcium 68%, magnesium 12–15%, potassium 3.5–5% and Sodium 0.5–1.5%. Many New Zealand soils are well below these figures. For tree crops, vines and berries, including strawberries, increase potassium to 5–7.5%. Once these conditions have been met fertiliser requirements will drop substantially, and soil pH will auto-correct to about 6.4 when the above conditions are fulfilled.

SOLUBLE phosphorus products kill vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (VAM). Mycorrhizal fungi can increase the roots’ effectiveness by up to 1,000 times, and plants grown with VAM have superior nutrition.

IT IS extremely important to get functional calcium levels up. Calcium is responsible for carrying other minerals into the plant, however too much calcium can tie up other nutrients and cause deficiencies. Limit applications of agricultural lime to 500–1000kg/ha for one application. Limit fine lime to less than 400kg/ha.

IF LUCERNE, oats and similar crops have hollow stems, calcium is lacking and yield will not meet potential. ADEQUATE calcium also translates into better stock growth rates and weight gain.

AN organic fertiliser programme must feed the microbes first, which will then feed the plants. Microbes include bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, protozoa, nematodes, algae, ciliates, arthropods and earthworms.

BACTERIA have a carbon — nitrogen ratio of 5:1 which means for every six bacteria eaten, five parts of N are released. Nematodes are 100:1, so for every 20 bacteria eaten, 19 parts of N are released into the soil. This is why it’s so important that the soil is in balance.

THE number of earthworms in the soil is an excellent visual sign of a healthy soil, and they can produce 30–300 tonnes/ha of casts per year. Worm casts from 20 worms per spade square contain 5xN (1.2t/ha), 7xP, 3xMg, 11xK and 1.5xCa, far more than ordinary soil (62 earthworms per square metres). Sulphur, iron, zinc and trace elements also increase. Pasture fibre increases by over 100%.

THERE are about 2,240,000kg of soil in a 1ha paddock, down to 150– 175mm deep. SIXTY percent of the sugars manufactured in leaves are dumped into the roots at night. Because sugar content in leaves is highest then, endeavour

to cut hay or silage in late afternoon or evening.

FIFTY percent of that sugar is exuded into the soil to feed the microbes. Microbes in turn make minerals available to the plant. The nutrient responsible for that happening is boron. Boron, along with selenium and cobalt, is commonly deficient in New Zealand soils.

CALCIUM and boron are synergists so lime is more effective with boron added.

FERTILISER and lime are more effective with carbon added. Carbon is food for the microbes, and carbon sources are aged sawdust, aged bark, rock dust, humates, charcoal, compost etc.

BRIX levels are a measurement of soluble solids (superior nutrition). Urea-fed pasture tends to have low Brix readings. The minimum reading for pasture to be able to resist pests and diseases is 12, while an excellent pasture will measure 24. A bee will not work flowers/nectar with a Brix level below seven, otherwise it will expend more energy in collection than it will get back. It all sounds a little like science fiction, but garden centres in Northland are joining their counterparts in the rest of the country as they field enquiries for a new plant that grows potatoes in the soil, underneath a tomato plant in the air above. The Potato Tom brings double the fun and productivity to the home gardener by combining a juicy Gardeners Delight tomato and a crop of the popular eating potato Agria from the one plant. As both potatoes and tomatoes are from the same family the two plants are graft compatible and can therefore be joined together. It’s the perfect combination that produces a good crop of both potatoes and beautiful cherry tomatoes. Aptly named DoubleUP, the Potato Tom comes from an innovative Kati Kati nursery Incredible Edibles, and as yet supplies are limited. The double species works because potato (Solonaceae tuberosum) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) belong to the same plant family, Solonaceae, and are closely related, sharing a common basic chromosome count of 12. Although the tomato was previously listed in a separate genus of Lycopersicum (L.

esculentum), in recent years it's been re-classified as a Solanum, the same genus as potatoes and indicative of their close relationship, botanically speaking. Tomato seedlings were used for the top, or scion, part of the plant, then grafted on to the emerging shoot from a potato tuber to produce the dual purpose plant, described as a predictably cropping, easy-to-grow plant, perfect for pots and patios. Grafted plants though are nothing new and a search of the Internet reveals eggplants and both sweet and chilli peppers are often grafted as are cucumbers, melons and watermelons. Grafted trees have been around for many years and are the basis of most commercial orchards. Roses too are also produced in never ending varieties. Now with the Potato Tom, the door seems open to enthusiastic gardeners to do a little experimental grafting of their own.

Chill out with smart technology When the sun is baking down, and you’re stuck in traffic, it’s almost second nature to reach for the air conditioning controls. But while this technology (introduced way back in the 1930s for New York limousine passengers) has become commonplace in cars, there are many Kiwi homes which still lack the facility of a modern heat pump — the ‘air-con’ solution for indoors. That’s not to say that these machines are unpopular — far from it. Reverse-cycle air conditioners (the technical term for heat pumps) sell in their tens of thousands each year — though mainly with an emphasis on replacing inefficient heating systems. Many customers will claim that they ‘will never use it for cooling’, having never experienced an air-conditioned home. But in the middle of summer, the temptation of that remote control can be very alluring indeed. To get the most out of a heat pump in the summer, the most important factor is its initial selection and installation. Just choosing the model which a large chain store has on ‘special’ can be a

mistake, as factors such as your other available heating sources, the layout of your home and even the amount of sunlight it will receive at different times of day all affect the operation of the machine. A survey by BRANZ (New Zealand’s building research specialists) showed that up to 28 per cent of heat pumps were potentially not properly sized and installed as of four years ago, though switched-on consumers are now demanding more from their installation. Most major electrical companies — and some heat pump sales companies too — will happily send a professional, free of charge, to measure your home for the right air conditioner. They’ll take into account all those factors previously mentioned, as well as the aesthetic placement of both the interior and exterior working of the heat pump. They will also consider the other two major components of a healthy, climate-controlled environment — fresh air flow and insulation.

Pahi racing enthusiast Ken Subritzky has a healthy respect for the drivers who pit their skills against Australia’s challenging Bathurst circuit. But it’s not just an admiration born of years of V8 fandom it comes from racing the twists and turns of Mount Panorama himself. And he is offering the same chance to anyone who wants to experience thrills behind the wheel in complete safety, by bringing the racetrack to your next show or corporate function. Ken doesn’t even have to leave the Kaipara to get behind the wheel of his own Holden racing machine. The fitter, turner, welder and toolmaker has deftly sidestepped the need for airline tickets, expensive pit crews and tons of tyres by building his own V8 supercar simulator — a labour of love which has consumed over seven months and is valued at more than $60,000. Ken had plans drawn up and he managed to source a genuine Holden police car, unfortunately crashed in the line of duty but still able to be stripped

and rebuilt as the shell of a simulation machine. Inside, the car boasts a fully functional racing wheel, seats, instruments and a suite of bone-rattling speakers which deliver every noise from tyre squeal to the rumble of that huge V8 mill. A high-resolution projector situated outside the windscreen displays a shockingly realistic replica of the iconic Aussie circuit, while under-car hydraulics add in the bumps and swerves. In fact, this last feature has proven so realistic that Ken often has to turn it off! The sensation of being there, feeling the responsiveness of real mechanical pedals, simulated tyre wear and the crunch of unintentional impacts with the wall is extremely immersive, and a

couple of trial laps went to prove that driving a V8 racer takes reflexes and nerves of steel. Ken and his wife Faye intend to take their simulator to motoring events — hot rod shows, new car launches, race meets — as well as making it available for parties, corporate events and fun days. They are currently seeking sponsors who may wish to ‘wrap’ both the simulator car and its caravan housing in their own ‘racing team’ colours, and a suite of minor improvements such as an

internal roll cage are planned to make the simulation feel even more authentic. “When you live here in the Kaipara you have to be innovative if you want to succeed,” says Ken, who is modest about the scale of what he’s achieved. New names take on the Mountain by Andy Bryenton

This year’s battle of the V8s on the ‘sacred tarmac’ of Bathurst came down to the classic showdown of Ford versus Holden, despite the inclusion of new names Erebus Racing (Mercedes Benz) and Nissan. But the up-and-comers challenging the legendary red and blue rivalry on Mount Panorama may very well hit their stride next year, with a wealth of technical data gleaned from running against the well established Ford and Holden teams. Certainly, Mercedes will be looking to up their game — the German marque have been monstering motorsport events since the days when they took on Auto Union speedsters in the 1930s. And Nissan’s spirited attempt to recapture the glory of their ‘Godzilla’ victories with the powerful new Altima was only cut short by a tragic kangaroo strike — not something any racer can plan for. Next year both teams will have the benefit of many races under their belts, and another returning brand nipping up behind them. Volvo return to the hallowed ground of the Mountain after a more than 20-year hiatus. In 1986 Kiwi driver Robbie Francevic won the

Aussie touring car series in a Volvo — now the Scandinavian automakers have put together something much more potent than the old 240T to re-enter the big leagues. Ford, too have changes on the horizon, as the run of the beloved Falcon badge comes to an end. More wins like that delivered by Mark Winterbottom this year will see the Aussie icon off in style, but what will replace it on the track?

Bathurst’s Ford versus Holden years are over — but what will the future bring?

Holden are currently keeping tight-lipped about the future of the Commodore, though if Ford’s famed ‘pony car’ is homulgulated, perhaps we’ll see a Camaro, or, if the racing gods are merciful, a Stingray on the starting grid.

One thing is for certain — variety, and a range of different brands of car competing at Bathurst will make the event more interesting for the non Fordand-Holden-obsessed. My personal pick — bring back the mighty Charger!

Rumours abound that a specially prepped Mustang is waiting in the wings — thought the fact that the Mustang is a two-door in its current format might mean a change of rules is needed. Certainly, the design of the current crop of cars adheres to tight guidelines, a fact which has led to some race fans wondering exactly which of the sleek, sticker-wrapped machines is actually carrying German or Japanese hardware under the hood.

Work hard, play harder this summer

It’s a well known fact that Polaris ATV quads work hard — both those and their ‘big brothers’ in the side-by-side configured Ranger series are now a common sight on Kiwi farms, putting in a hard day’s yakka. But there’s another side to off road power which has been the focus of intense design and development by the Polaris engineering team — the mudslinging world of pure recreation. There’s a sense, with the new Polaris Scrambler 850 that those folks in the design department have been given free rein, eschewing some of the practicalities needed for farm labour in lieu of more aggressive, race-tuned

styling and handling. Nothing else could explain the fierce looks and the highoutput growl of this terrain-dominating machine, which is already garnering great reviews from competition riders and weekend trail-riders alike. It all begins with a seriously reworked power plant — a parallel twin fuel-injected overhead cam mill tuned to churn out a full 77 horsepower, and mated to a CVT box which prioritises

sheer corner-to-corner acceleration. Knowing that airflow is key to performance, the Scrambler’s creators have also made sure to fit a sportstuned exhaust system — with the added benefit of amplifying that visceral fourstroke sound. Power is delivered to the ground in smooth chunks, via a suspension setup created in partnership with racing heavyweights Fox, and incorporating their podium series shocks. With a full twelve inches of ride height, and over ten inches of travel in its custom-designed rolled rear suspension, the Scrambler is made to glide over the most gnarly terrain, gripping hard with specially commissioned sports tyres. Of course, as a Polaris, you can

expect plenty of electronic wizardry to smooth the ride as well. Not only is the Scrambler 850 available with EPS power steering, it also packs a true all wheel drive system which delivers maximum power to all wheels as soon as the rear wheels begin to slip. Good hoof trimming needs practice Last month we talked a bit about some of the things you as a farmer can do to minimise lameness on your farm. We looked at preventative hoof trimming. This month I would like to look a bit more at what you can do once the cow is lame. In reality this is often the only time a cow is being trimmed in New Zealand, so effectively most farmers are being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff all the time when it comes to lame cows. Trimming lame cows is always reactive management and trimming cows only when lame doesn’t make good business sense, but you now have a lame cow and she needs to be treated. What do you do to help this animal? Obviously just looking at the hoof is

not going to fix it so more is needed. Assuming that the cow is lame in her claw then by trimming her well we can usually help her tremendously. The principle of good hoof trimming is that we need to reduce the weight bearing of the sore claw and let the air get to it. A cow is most commonly lame on her lateral claw because the lateral claw is often overloaded when the cow is walking or standing still on a hard surface (refer to last month’s article). So, in this case, we don’t just level the two claws to the same height, we actually trim the lateral claw thinner so more weight is transferred to the medial claw. The more weight we can get off the lateral claw the more rest this claw is going to get.

Rest is one of the most common pieces of advice you hear from your doctor and it is also very effective for lame cows. Some people are worried about making the lateral claw thin. It feels like you make the cow even more tender when she has a sole thickness not much more than the thickness of a piece of paper. The thing is that we are reducing the weight on the claw with a thin sole. If we make both claws thin we are possibly going to end up with a problem. However, cows are very resilient. Having thin soles is not necessarily a problem to them unless we make them walk long distances over rough tracks.

Try not to make the claw bleed because it makes it a whole lot harder to see what you are doing and the healing process only takes longer. It all seems very easy when you read this. The principal is straightforward but putting it into effect requires a lot of practice and instruction.

Weeds — friends or foe?

From a farmer’s point of view weeds take up valuable ground space where productive grass and clovers should be growing so they are tempted to remove them with herbicide. But why do weeds appear? Well like it or not, soil is a natural ecosystem with complex species interactions, checks and balances, and weeds are a part of this. Everything we see in nature has a purpose, and weeds are no exception. If we really want to deter weeds effectively we better find out what their purpose is and intelligently manage them rather than waging chemical war against them. Why do weeds appear? Weeds appear because the soil environment favours their germination and growth. So an infestation of Californian thistle is actually signalling that the soil environment favours this weed species over the desirable pasture species and even other weed species — that is, soil fertility has deteriorated. This is mostly due to deterioration of the soil mineral balance, the plant-availability of key nutrients, as well as the balance of soil food-web microbes, the function of which are to feed plants. Weeds are not the problem — unbalanced soil is. Nuking weeds with herbicide simply amounts to suppressing symptoms, which will continue to reappear until the real cause of their presence is addressed. Californian thistle is favoured by low Ca and high K availability — low soil humus, compaction and anaerobic soil conditions. Killing weeds with herbicide simply interrupts the process of restoring the nutrient balance and further degrades the soil. Some farmers know that weeds are nature’s caretakers — they rebalance nutrient-deficient soils by mining the missing nutrients from deeper in the soil and bringing them back to the surface where they are released for pasture growth when they die. The particular weed species present indicates which nutrients are missing. While weeds differ in their function, as a rule of thumb most weeds indicate a shortage of plant available Ca and P and an excess of plant available K. Other deficiencies or excesses may also apply, depending on the species. Weeds and Why they Grow, by Jay L McCaman, is a very informative book that can help you to find out what function a weed is playing in your pasture.

Our attitude towards weeds needs to change if we are to preserve our soil fertility for the benefit of future generations. Chemical farming and pesticides are destroying our soils and our health. Recent research carried out in Maine, USA, showed by applying the nutrients missing in the soil (calcium, phosphorus and trace minerals) with two solid fertiliser applications, they were able to change the species composition of their paddocks over two years without spraying, cultivating or re-seeding. They invested in remineralising the soil and worked with nature rather than spending money on sprays and working against nature.

What causes facial eczema Facial Eczema is a disease caused by fungal spores from the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that produce a toxin which when ingested by cattle can lead to the damage of liver and bile ducts. This fungus (FE) can cause lower milk production and occasionally death from liver damage. The damaged liver is unable to rid the body of wastes and the breakdown product of chlorophyll build up in the body causing sensitivity to sunlight, which can then lead to inflammation of the skin. The first signs of FE usually show up as a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores (sub clinical FE). Other signs may include cows being restless at milking time, seeking shade and licking their udder. As facial eczema becomes more obvious, another drop in milk production may be seen and exposed un-pigmented skin may thicken and peel. Especially prone are the white areas on cattle, teats and udder and inside the hind legs may also be affected. It is important to remember that not all animals may show physical signs of clinical facial eczema, but some may have had liver damage occur (sub clinical FE). Facial eczema spores are produced when minimum grass temperatures are above 12° for two or three nights and humidity is usually high — this can occur in the months (January to May). The fungus grows on soft matter in the base of the pasture, so hard grazing during this period of increased spore activity may also increase the risk of spore uptake by cattle. Prevention should start early with zinc treatment, ideally two to three weeks before the spore growth danger period, for the most beneficial protection. One product that is suitable is Zinc 50 from Vetpak, it is a free flowing Zinc Oxide 50% liquid suspension to aid in the treatment and prevention of facial eczema in cattle and sheep, and is ideally suited for drenching or adding

Over the past three years we’ve followed two Northern farmers as they’ve been working to improve their farming systems. This is your last chance to see the results. Beef + Lamb New Zealand Lower North Monitor Farmers Dan and Nicky Berger have used new ideas and proven techniques to drive their farm performance. Topics we’ll review include winter cropping, practical beef systems, improving lambing percentage, beef cow management and two years of pasture growth and quality analysis. Asian prawn noodles Ingredients (serves 2)

Method

1 chilli

1. Chop your tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum and put in a bowl

Half a punnet of cherry tomatoes

2. Chop your red onion into slices and dice your chilli and garlic finely

100g cucumber 100g capsicum

3. If you’ve brought shelled prawns (banana prawns, my favourite) peel them and devein them.

10 prawns 2 packets Soba noodles

4. Place soba noodles in a bowl and put hot water over them, let them sit till they separate (they may need a helping hand)

snowpea shoots 2 tsp lemongrass paste

5. Heat your fry pan, add oil let warm up, add your red onion and let them become soft. Then add the chilli, garlic and lemongrass paste let fry off for a minute. Add prawns and let cook through until they’re coloured.

2 tbsp oil 1 red onion 2 cloves garlic 1 lime

6. Once prawns are cooked take off the heat, drain the soba noodles, add to the pan and mix soba noodles and prawns together, then add to the bowl and toss together.

Dressing Ingredients 1 chilli (finely diced)

Dressing:

2 tbsp soy sauce

Finely dice the chilli, place in a cup or whatever you want to make your dressing in, add soy sauce, fish sauce and rice wine vinegar and the juice of half a lime.

1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tsp rice wine vinegar Juice of half a lime (the dressing is very much to personal taste, make it your own)

I like to make things look pretty so put the noodle mixture into a bowl, then add snowpea shoots and pull out a couple of prawns and put them on top then drizzle over the dressing.

had a lot of experience with electric Kontiki’s, on a recent highly successful test run off Muriwai Beach I wasn’t firstly surprised at how nose-heavy the Predator was. But this is part of its design that allows it to punch through waves a lot more easily than many other models. In fact its shape is perhaps one of the most important design features. Its natural shark-like ‘stealth’ design certainly cuts through the water during both launching and retrieving. The pectoral fins along with the threebattery ballast seemed to really dampen the roll or twist of the unit where other designs have struggled, while the offset tow point counteracted the torque of the motor. You would have to give it an A+ for design! The other part to this package is of course the Predator Winch

NorthTec Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) tutor, Klaus Lotz, originally from Germany, learned a long time ago that there are smarter ways to put into place agricultural and farming practices which works for the environment. He developed a passion for effective ecological systems which have taken him to Bolivia and Brazil, and eventually brought him here to the Northland. Having witnessed first-hand the ravages of indiscriminate farming and forestry in South America Klaus believes the way forward for preserving and maintaining the environment is through adopting sustainable production practices. “SRD is more than just growing tomatoes and vegetables — it is a whole lot more about working with our natural systems so that you get the most out of them without damaging them,” says Klaus. “It is also about developing practical sustainable systems which reduce risk and harm to the environment.”

“With SRD you learn holistic land management, and at a time when you can see the effects of climate change, it becomes even more important to look at better ways of doing things,” he says. “At NorthTec we teach our students how to build structures with natural materials, wetland (riparian) planting, plant propagation, using native plants, water management, natural forest foods, food processing, beekeeping, composting and home orchards. They really learn a wide range of skills.” And, as students continue on to the Diploma in Sustainable Rural Development they get to study crop ecology, sustainable livestock management, soil management for sustainable use and an introduction to alternative technology to harness energy, treat waste water and evaluate alternative building materials. Klaus, who practises what he teaches by growing bananas and cherimoya for the market on his permaculture site at Matapouri, says learning SRD allows students to become innovative. “For instance we have a student in Kaitaia who is looking at growing sugarcane for producing ethanol as a biofuel — once the juice is extracted the fibre can be used to grow oyster mushrooms, or used in biogas production,” he says. “We’re also involved with a number of other projects through our students.” Klaus believes that Northland is ideally placed with its warm and moist climate to become a leading SRD region. “And there is no reason why Northland can’t become a leader in sustainable development in New Zealand — we have everything we need here.” If you are keen on studying Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) you can contact NorthTec through: enquiries@northtec.ac.nz or call: 0800 162 100
