“We really need the ongoing support from the Northland community and visitors to the region,” said Northland Emergency Services Trust chair Paul Ahlers. “I must pay particular tribute to our founding sponsors Top Energy and Northpower, who have been with us since day one. They have contributed millions of dollars since 1988 to help keep people safe. “That sponsorship means we can better ensure people in Northland are given the best chance of survival and wellbeing in the golden hour after an accident or medical event. “Northpower and Top Energy also manage our annual fundraising appeal and contribute $250,000 towards it every year. They contribute lots more in the background without wanting recognition.” Top Energy and Northpower chief executives, Russell Shaw and Andrew McLeod, respectively, say the Northland Rescue Helicopters are essential for a region like Northland with so many remote pockets of land and the diversity of the landscape. “We all know someone who has been helped by the service, and that is why we continue to support it and encourage people to donate to the annual fundraising appeal.” Ryan Hall says he is forever grateful after his son Kayden, a student at Bream Bay College, needed the chopper service recently.

“On April 22, my daughter Sophie phoned saying that a ute carrying Kayden hit a truck head-on,” says Ryan. “The driver of the ute passed away at the scene. Passersby removed Kayden from the ute and laid him on the side of the road where Sophie comforted him.” Kayden had suffered a broken right femur. “I turned up minutes after the accident, and it was my worst nightmare. It was really bad. The Northland Rescue Helicopter guys and medics were incredible. After they stabilised Kayden, we were flown to Starship in Auckland. “The flight was scary due to the fear of what Kayden’s internal injuries could be, and his leg looked awful. The crew were incredible, to say the least. They ensured at all times, Kayden and I were able to see each other and kept us up to date with what was happening. “They chatted with Kayden and had a real personal care touch. Words will never show our true gratitude. “Kayden has made great progress with his rehab and wants to be back free diving over summer and playing rugby next season. I am very grateful for how well we were cared for and the ultimate outcome for Kayden.” To support the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service go to nest.org.nz.

But that changed in an instant. He was on the back of a ute with his three young children and trundling along at really low speed with a trailer behind. A gear change caused Mike and the children to lose balance, so he rose to a crouch and put his arms out to ensure they stayed put. They did but Mike fell backwards, cracked his head on a toolbox at the front of the trailer. He instinctively put his hands up to protect the wound at the back of his skull and rolled over into a semi-foetal position, which he now likens to the brace position on a commercial aeroplane safety video. “I was subsequently told if I had not done that I would have been killed,” recounts Mike. As he rolled onto his stomach a trailer wheel ran up his spine and across his shoulder blade.

He suffered three broken vertebrae in his lower back, three broken vertebrae between his shoulder blades, a broken collar bone, cracked ribs and severe bruising from his buttocks to his shoulder – not to mention the laceration to his head which required multiple stitches. Within minutes of the accident, multiple people had come to Mike’s aide, with one person holding his head to keep him from moving. Forty five minutes later an ambulance from Russell arrived on the scene. But with the volunteer ambulance officers unable to administer the required level of pain relief, the Northland Rescue Helicopter was dialled in...

Studying pest eradication

Helping efforts to eradicate possums, stoats and rats from New Zealand by 2050, six young minds are setting out to revolutionise pest management. Supported by Predator Free 2050 Limited and $2.4 million in Jobs for Nature funding, the postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers, including Māori scientist, Ngāpuhi: Te Hikutu, Alana Alexander, a postgraduate at the University of Otago, will be researching topics as diverse as genetics, biocontrol, audio lures and social licence. “Our work is certainly ambitious, but is a critical step to secure New Zealand’s biodiversity,” says PF2050 Ltd science director Dan Tompkins. “Despite decades of valuable and dedicated conservation efforts, step-changes are needed to achieve our goals. To achieve those stepchanges, New Zealand needs new science talent to drive the cutting-edge research needed. “The PF2050 programme has a fair bit of international attention as to whether it can be done. As New Zealand always has, we are backing our local ingenuity and talent. We have deliberately looked for diversity of candidates and a breadth of topics.” Alana will investigate which genes are important to reproduction and survival in possums, mindful of the social and cultural implications of genetics-based pest control.

Alana Alexander, Māori scientist, Ngāpuhi: Te Hikutu is investigating possum genetics

Possums were introduced into New Zealand from both Australian mainland and Tasmanian populations, meaning that today, New Zealand possums are a big genetic hodge-podge of these two source populations. Alana’s research will use this hodgepodge to better understand which genes are potentially important to reproduction/survival because they are more restricted to ‘mainland’ or ‘Tasmanian’ genetic backgrounds, versus genes that are more free to

spread despite genetic backgrounds because they offer a leg up in New Zealand environments. A potential downstream application of the research could be the use of some of these genes in genetically mediated pest control. As a Māori scientist, Alana is also interested in making sure Māori communities are able to access this research and information about genetically-mediated pest control. Alongside her genetics mahi, she will be developing resources in te reo Māori to communicate genetics research on pest species and potential downstream applications. “The recently launched PF2050 Ltd research strategy crystallises the outcomes for which breakthroughs are most needed to achieve the PF2050 goals, as well as championing the need for more support for and investment in the science that will most help us achieve them,” said Mr Tompkins. “Building new science capability is critical for achieving all of New Zealand’s environmental goals, not just Predator Free. The investments made here will help establish these researchers’ careers, and their skills and accomplishments will be of immense value to New Zealand in the future.”

NovEMbER 2021 NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

AN INTERNATIONAL TASTE BY ANN VAN ENGELEN After immigrating from California, David and Jennifer Rodrigue settled in Waipū in 2002 with backpacks and their four-year-old son.

“W

e left America and started travelling the world in 2000 with the intent of coming and finding a small piece of land to create a lifestyle here in New Zealand,” says Jennifer. “Until our son turned 18, we lived in suburban One Tree Point. We then moved to this 40-acre property five minutes from Waipū township. “In 1980, the owner of Chez Panisse restaurant California Alice Waters introduced goat cheese to her restaurant. I liked the cheese, and it created an interest in goats as we travelled and we enjoyed the meat too. “When we came here, we found cheese products hard to find. What we did find was imported, expensive and full of preservatives, so we acquired a couple of does in milk when we bought this property. “I learned to milk by hand on YouTube and later purchased a small milking

machine. We registered with MPI under the Animal Products Act for two Risk Management Programmes, Farm Dairy and Cheese Production, to legally sell our products. “We now have 20 Anglo Nubians and around 16 kids born this season at Belle Chevre Creamery. “Belle Chevre means beautiful goat in French. Anglo Nubians have long floppy ears and the Roman type nose. They have lovely personalities and are pretty in the paddocks. Each goat wears a name tag and a Swiss bell with a different sound, which makes the paddock very melodic. “We like that goats are easy on the environment. They use less water and feed compared to cows, yet they produce a comparable amount of milk of their size.” David and Jennifer sell the bucks and keep the does to grow the herd or replace the older girls.

Jennifer has a three-hour time frame to process the goat’s milk and begins immediately after each milking

“Anglo Nubians are known for producing milk with high-quality milk fat content. We test our milk to ensure we

are getting what we expect and recently introduced a new buck to improve our herd.

Jennifer Rodrigue discovered her love of goat cheese in the early 1980s and now produces her own speciality varieties

“This is our third season, and this year, we staggered our mating, so we have milk to match our peak cheese production and demand. The milking season runs from when they kid around August, and we can milk until three months before they next kid. “The lactose and structure is different in goat’s milk compared to cows. It is said the fat molecule is the same size as human milk, has more vitamins and minerals and less lactose than cows. That is why it is popular in baby formula. “Goats are naturally A2 milk producers, and people who cannot tolerate cow’s milk can usually have goats without an issue. “For our cheeses we want a fine flavour rather than a goaty tasting product. It is all about what the animals eat. Our herd has pasture, hay, probiotics and a New Zealand made non-GMO feed on the

stand as a grain treat. This incorporates all the vitamins and minerals they need. “I never use palm kernel extract or soy, which is often added to animal feed as a protein booster. I don’t want it myself or it coming through my milk and we don’t let the buck run with the girls either, so his odour doesn’t transfer to them.” Jennifer is required to process the milk within three hours of the milking session. “I make several types of cheese. This year at the NZ Specialist Cheesemakers Association Champion of Cheese Awards Competition, our feta got a bronze, and the marinated goat cheese got a gold and was first runner-up for champion goat cheese. In 2020 we gained three silver and three gold medals. “I like the science of cheesemaking. It is very interesting as you make different cheeses from the same ingredients.”

was working for an agency for worldwide communications selling a variety of media formats in Thailand,” says Tarn. “I was also a tour guide operator in Bangkok and met Greg. When he moved home to Auckland in 2012, I came with him. “Later, we wanted to get away from the city life and stay close to family in Auckland. In 2017 this avocado orchard came up, and it fitted with our plans. The volcanic soil is good, and I have been growing all sorts of things. “When we first arrived, we replaced the older trees because if you prune them, they can take three years to recover. The trees grow on raised mounds as avocados don’t like too much rain. “We grow export quality fruit and comply with MPI rules and regulations

using a 12-month programme. Our avocado can be up to 200 grams each. We are now considering growing fruit such as bananas and cherimoya, which is a custard apple. It is a sweet, tropical fruit with a creamy texture. I believe it will become popular here.” Taan has also diversified her options by growing native oyster mushrooms. “I have always had a passion for mushrooms. I grew up as a country girl, and foraging is in our blood. I have a lot of nice childhood memories of my grandma taking me mushroom hunting. I helped grandma and mum from a very young

age to do ever ything from canning and preserving food, to planting cotton and making our clothes from silk. “In Thailand, a selfsufficient lifestyle was encouraged by our King. We were taught to work hard and smart and put our interests into moving forward. It is living a dream making your own food, so I started growing my produce in buckets to be selfsustainable here. “When I was 27 years old, I left Bangkok and returned home to the farm and started growing mushrooms but was unsuccessful. I am now learning to grow oyster mushrooms successfully.

“Avocado and mushrooms are both superfoods. Mushrooms are full of protein, and avocado has good fat. We are currently researching producing a cold-pressed avocado oil infused with mushrooms. “I am also planning an Airbnb and will host avocado and mushroom workshops as part of the experience. I am also very interested in cooking, and every day I cook with mushrooms and get ideas from a chef who is helping us. “New Zealand native oyster mushrooms are not commercialised. There are also Lion Mane and Shiitake, which are still new to the country. I grow my mushrooms on straw at present and supplement that with rice bran to be totally organic. “The straw is steamed at 100 degrees for six hours minimum before I add in

the mushroom spawn. At present, I am working on getting the highest yield using less straw to be more efficient. I am also learning how to make my own culture as well. They don’t grow in the dark or in compost. They like wet and cold. The spawn takes up to five weeks to travel through the bags to be ready for harvest. “I need 100 bags to produce 50kg and find sawdust is a better compost to use. Pine isn’t great as they will absorb the flavour of the pine, so straw is a better taste. “Once harvested, it is best to eat them quickly. We use them in pasta and Thai cooking. They are very nice in omelets, and you can saute them in a frypan or have mushroom

and cheese or with mashed avocado on toast. “I go to the Whāngarei Farmers Market every Saturday, and 95 per cent of my customers are repeat. I am looking at the Shiitake, which is the most popular in Asia. “There are small growers everywhere and there is lots of room to grow native mushrooms. They provide protein and are a great meat replacement. In Thailand the average wage is $15 a day and one avocado costs $3–$4 per fruit. “I am sharing how we do it over here, so they know for the future. If we can produce ourselves, it makes life healthier. I hope to be producing for a long time and pass on my knowledge to others, including children, teenagers and whānau.”

ADVERTORIAL

Silver lining found in Asian avocado markets As industries throughout the country struggle with the challenges of doing business in a Covid environment, the decade of work that Katikati firm, Darling Group, has put into markets throughout Asia is finally paying off. Jacob Darling, general manager of Group Sales and Marketing, says the 2021 season remains on track. “Week 40 marks a significant milestone for the Darling Group team. We are now sitting at 40 per cent of our total volume picked, packed and on the water.” Darling Group has been exporting to Asia for close to 10 years now. A combination of strong campaigns involving engaging with customers, influencers and in-market advertising companies has enabled them to expand their exports into this region year-on-year. “Of the 300,000 trays picked this season, 220,000 trays, or 73 per cent of the crop, has been dispatched to Asia. The difference has found its way to Australian retailers and into the domestic market,” says Darling. “Our plan for the 2021 harvest was to place 70 per cent of the total crop into Asian markets, so we’re well on track to achieve that despite global shipping delays.” The markets that Darling Group predominantly operates in across

Asia are China, Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong. “China and Korea are set up to take the bulk of the Asian volume for the group. However, all markets in the region contribute significantly to the overall value of the export programme. “We are extremely mindful that there is a significant amount of ‘water to still go under the bridge’, but the silver lining remains that we are within a few thousand trays of our goal.” “Pleasingly, Asia continues to return a premium over Australia, with the benefit of a short USA market allowing significantly less Mexican volume into our primary markets across Asia, which has assisted with firm pricing in there,” Darling noted. Seasonal fluctuations are, of course, a major hurdle for all horticultural operations. “Quality and dry matter are one to watch! With dry matter levels creeping up every week across all regions, this is something that our team is monitoring on a weekly basis.

“The challenge is that we will come under timing pressure to pick and pack large volumes to tie in with sea freight schedules to Asia. Our priority is to get crops picked, packed and sold, with the aim of being 65 to 70 per cent through by week 45.” While Asian markets are growing from strength to strength, Darling

notes the Australian market is more challenging than in previous seasons. “The Australian market continues to be under pressure. Supply chain delays, domestic oversupply and Covid-19 in New South Wales and Victoria are all elements that are making it extremely tough in the Australian retail market, and as a result, we are redirecting fruit to other channels.”

“We at Federated Farmers of New Zealand see the importance and value of a strong immune system as it protects us from the ravages of diseases that have swept the world over the years. That’s why we are encouraging all rural Kiwis to get vaccinated against Covid-19 now. “On occasion, our immune system has had to be strengthened by the administration of a vaccine to protect us from new diseases that have appeared and that are life-damaging or threatening. Covid-19 is one of these. “Rural New Zealanders understand the value of vaccinations simply because we have long been undertaking immunisation programmes for the animals on our farms. “We understand that by vaccinating our cattle or sheep for leptospirosis, for example, we protect not only ourselves and our families, but we also protect the essential workers we rely on when our animals are sent for slaughter. “We have had immunisation ourselves for a host of preventable diseases that have enabled us to all live relatively free lives and travel all over the world in safety. The team at Federated Farmers Northland believes the only path to freedom again is to encourage our Northland rural communities to get vaccinated. “This will not only protect ourselves and our families but also those around us who rely on primary producers for a host of reasons. We can then go to our clubs and gatherings without fear and enjoy those

around us, our friends. This is particularly important for the older folk amongst us. “Many of our team at Northland Province Federated Farmers and their families have been vaccinated against Covid-19 without any side effects or repercussions. We feel it is our responsibility to have the vaccination so that we can protect our fellow farming families. “That way, if they need us for whatever reason, you know that it is safe for you and your family to come in contact — especially important for those people who are immunocompromised. “We encourage all our farming colleagues, whether members or not, to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Do it for New Zealand, and let’s get back on track.”

The Young Grower of the Year, run by Horticulture New Zealand, is an annual competition comprising regional finals in major fruit and vegetable growing areas with a national final, won this year by 25-year old Melissa van den Heuvel. Melissa is an avocado grower services representative at Apata Group Limited, based in the Bay of Plenty. HortNZ president, Barry O’Neil, says supporting young people and encouraging more of them to join the industry is critical to its continued success and growth in what is the new normal — life affected by Covid. “At times like these, having a cause and taking time out to celebrate it is even more important than it was before. “This year’s regional finals were oversubscribed, which shows the inherent optimism in our industry as well as the pride inherent in providing New Zealand and the world with tasty and healthy fruit and vegetables.” The national final was held at the Lower Hutt Events Centre on October 20 and 21, following alert level two health and safety protocols. “I am very proud to be in this industry. It is something I am very passionate about. What we produce is very top-notch,” says Melissa. “It was great to be part of this competition and get to know my fellow competitors. We’d all like to thank the sponsors and HortNZ for giving us this opportunity.”

GOLDEN YEARS ADVERTORIAL

Planning for the golden years by John Arts

Most Kiwis don’t actively plan for their retirement, and for selfemployed business owners, succession may not be a priority. However, a little planning in your younger years can make a massive difference in helping achieve a certain standard of living in your golden years. Just like running a farm, planning for the season ahead makes it much more likely that you will meet your goals. Jenny Graham, financial adviser at Whitelaw Weber, says people often ask how much they need to retire comfortably, but everyone’s definition of ‘comfort’ is different. For some, that might include overseas travel or purchasing an asset like a campervan. For others, it might mean spending more time with the grandchildren. A robust retirement plan starts with articulating lifestyle goals (including definitions of comfort),

“Planning for the future today leaves less to chance.”

understanding attitudes to risk and developing a pragmatic savings plan. For business owners, the next step is to think about the future of the business. If it’s a family farm, for example, the goal is to ensure a smooth transition from one generation to the next. Wayne Weber, primary sector specialist at Whitelaw Weber, outlines four steps to effective succession: • Start early with conversations between family members, making sure everyone’s expectations are heard • Get independent advice from a succession facilitator or trusted adviser to minimise the potential for conflict • Document everything and develop a business plan with input from all members of the family • Ensure all legal documents are updated, including Wills and Powers of Attorney Planning for the future today leaves less to chance. To quote Harry Emerson Fosdick, ‘don’t simply retire from something. Have something to retire to.’ To talk with a financial adviser or chartered accountant, call the team at Whitelaw Weber on 09 407 7117.

Sticking together is the answer

ADVERTORIAL

Not feeling your best? by John Arts

by Chris Penk MP (National), Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate

I have a younger client who had poor immunity with regular colds, low energy and generally feeling unwell for no medical reason.

We live in an age dominated by numbers. For the last couple of months, as a nation, we have been obsessively watching the number of Covid cases, the number of ICU beds available, the number of vaccinations and so on.

Our first priority was to improve his immune system. Despite what you read, you cannot ‘boost’ your immune system. Our immune system is a complex, interconnected group of cells and tissue types. Our immune system is highly dependent on nutrients. Of these, the most important is vitamin D, which acts as a master controller of our immune responses. Then there is a long list of trace minerals and some vitamins. I often talk to people who take vitamin C and zinc for their immunity. These are important, but just two of many. This is where a well-formulated comprehensive multi-mineral, multivitamin and multi-antioxidant can be very helpful as they can provide all the important nutrients, not just some of them. Having regular colds, especially in winter, can be the first sign of poor immune responses. You may have a

great immune system, but it may be half asleep or just disorganised. I put my client on an initial higher dose of my multi-nutritional formula to lift critical nutrients rapidly. We also included vitamin D. He has been delighted with the response. He has been through winter without a cold and with much more energy. The bonus has been that the niggling low-grade depression has gone, probably from lifting vitamin D. Our bodies have a huge capacity to heal and restore but only if we give it the nutrients it needs. Give yourself a three-month challenge; you may well be surprised. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his all-new newsletter at abundant.co.nz.

Impacts of some numbers are very clear, but others are much less so, requiring extra analysis or even soul-searching. In the case of statistics relating to the economy, it’s all too easy for our eyes to glaze over when figures get thrown about. While interest rates may not seem like a great source of interest (pun intended), of course, their effect on local families and workplaces can be huge. It is probably more helpful to think about sets of numbers such as inflation and interest rates as indicating how good our quality of life can get. In the case of inflation, it was disheartening to see the news recently that the annual figure for the last 12 months is now 4.9%. The expectation is that interest rates will rise as a result, which is obviously bad news for those owing mortgagesecured loans. Of course, inflation itself can have a corrosive effect on wages. For our people here in northern and west Auckland, and across the country for that matter, the greatest danger is, of course, ‘stagflation’. It’s been years since we faced such a combination of stagnant economic conditions (perhaps inevitable following

“For our people... the greatest danger is ‘stagflation’.” a global pandemic) and inflation (unavoidable when extra printed cash is swirling around). If we think about the things that lie within our control, as individuals, families and communities, the answer surely lies in sticking together as best we can. A year ago, the phrase ‘support local’ was a catch cry to rally our region around organisations, especially local businesses, that had been hit hard. In the dying weeks of 2021, it will be at least as important a sentiment, if not more so. While it’s currently necessary to purchase so many goods online, and the whole world is at our fingertips, we can still consciously choose the local, independent little guy or girl. It’s our best hope of outrunning inflation. Improving the incomes of our friends, family and neighbours must be a priority. In an age of numbers, these ones really do matter. Good luck out there team.

TAILORED LEGAL SOLUTIONS LIMITED SPECIALIST BOUTIQUE LAW FIRM MOVES TO RURAL BASED CHAMBERS “I’m not sure when rural New Zealand became the bad guy but the stigma, regulation, political blame and tightening of the noose means a lot of people are feeling the pinch; some are feeling really backed into a corner. In those times just knowing where to turn is half the battle”. Local boutique law firm, Tailored Legal Solutions Limited, has hit another milestone. After 7 years based in offices on Victoria Street, Dargaville, this specialist litigation practice is moving to rural-based legal chambers in January 2022. Under the direction of local “west-coast girl” Emma Smith, Tailored Legal is a specialist commercial and civil litigation practise, with a particular speciality in Agribusiness and Rural Litigation. “It’s important our clients feel comfortable when they meet with us – we’ve worked hard to find the right space to achieve an environment which helps our clients (and our team) to relax and feel reassured.” As Barrister & Solicitor, Emma acts for rural and commercial clients across New Zealand in complex disputes / litigation involving contractual and shareholder arrangements, regulatory matters (including defence of prosecutions by regulators such as MPI and Regional Authorities), complex insolvency matters and employment disputes. Appearing regularly in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Employment Relations Authority, Employment Court and the District Court, Emma has gained a reputation for taking on the “David & Goliath Battles”. Emma is keenly interested in clients having access to the option to litigate, mediate or meaningfully negotiate matters when the need arises, particularly in the arena of rural and farming litigation where industry knowledge is key. From challenging fraudulent commercial arrangements to pursuing compensation for the wrongful interference by a regulator in rural business operations, Emma’s recent case load has been testimony to the breadth of work of this boutique litigation practice. Emma also works with local and regional business clients, particularly in respect of business structuring, risk mitigation strategies, employment planning and commercial arrangements. Emma enjoys helping clients thrive as they work through the various stages of business growth and development.

Tailored Legal Solutions will, from January 1, 2022, be based from Bespoke Chambers 10 minutes from Dargaville Town Centre. First contact with Emma and the team may be made by phone, email or in person with prior appointment. Meetings can be arranged at a time and location which is mutually agreeable. Home, business, farm and site visits are all possible or, alternatively, we can host a meeting in one of our two tailored meeting venues. We have also embraced technology options for all clients and can host meetings via Zoom, MS Teams, Skype and Messenger Face Time as suits the clients.

EDMONDS & MASON

Strong and reliable on the farm Tuatara Machinery Limited is a New Zealand company that has been producing side-by-side vehicles under the Tuatara brand for more than eight years, creating a work horse that is strong and reliable and built for commercial use on farms. This has proved to be a challenging task, given the range of very demanding terrain presented on farms throughout New Zealand. Of course many farmers push the capabilities of a side-by-side to the limit and beyond, and servicing is done when the vehicle breaks. These facts have to be taken into account with the design of a side-by-side but the balance is in producing something that is very strong while at the same time does not have the characteristics of a tank. In the case of the Tuatara side-by-side, our approach has been to produce a machine that is primarily constructed of steel for strength, as opposed to plastic, which becomes brittle and breaks easily when exposed to ultraviolet light, and is expensive to replace. We have also placed an emphasis on simple engineering and ease of access to componentry so that our vehicles are easy to service, even by the customer, and the time spent in doing so is considerably reduced. The process of introducing a new side-by-side to the market has come with its challenges in terms of selecting the best, most robust components for the vehicle. But the benefit that we have over the competing multinational companies is that if we have a component or design aspect that is failing regularly, we have free range to make changes and design improvements.

No sooner has the calendar swung around to mid-December than old friends, relatives and distant acquaintances will be on the phone or pulling into the driveway. There, with them, will be the hallmarks of the Kiwi holidaymaker. The spotlessly clean SUV with two plastic kayaks strapped to the roof and a selection of carsick children watching Disney Plus on a tablet. “We were just in the area and thought we’d stop by,” your old mate or second cousin will say as he unhitches a trailer full of jet skis and barbecue equipment. “Hope it’s alright to pitch the old family tent in your paddock?” Now, saying ‘no’ at this point is about as diplomatic as kicking a cute puppy on national television. You, with your rolling acres, can’t begrudge a little spot for your buddy, who must toil for 11 out of 12 months in a tiny high rise cubicle. Never mind that the effluent irrigator just got put away and that the topdresser is booked in. “There’s plenty of space,” you’ll say, gently steering the children away from the paddock, which contains a combined eight and a half tonnes of stroppy bulls. Now, this might sound all too cynical, but there’s a silver lining or two. You might be in for a few fresh-caught snapper and a few cold ones from the obligatory

container-ship-sized stack of chilly bins. At the same time, your guests can learn a lot about the real state of farming in the modern era, starting with a full rundown of the health and safety concerns implicit in operating an agri-business. If this list doesn’t put them off or send them to sleep, there’s lots to see and do. Children, especially, will find a simple novelty in helping with farm chores that you don’t then have to do. Well, not too many times. Nevertheless, once you’ve informed your guests that you can’t sing a whole

opera in the shower because water is precious, that electric fences tend to tickle a bit, and that everything tastes better cooked outdoors, you’ll feel a warm glow of seasonal cheer, just from being a gracious host. Even better, your guests will go back home knowing that the Kiwi countryside is still a green and pleasant place, and it’s in good hands. If you did have a chuckle when that topdressing plane barnstormed the family tent to wake everybody up.

FROM THE GROUND UP Cutting the ties that bind

by Andy Bryenton

We all enjoy the sense of freedom that holiday living brings, getting out on the boat, out into the wilderness or off to the beach for a few days or weeks cut off from the ties of modern civilisation. However, some go beyond snipping the power cables and utility mains for a holiday break; those who, with a combination of skills old and new, have gone completely off the grid. Daniel Boakes, Dargaville’s Solar Boss expert, has helped many families, farms and individuals get off the grid, from the harbour to the far north. He says that the technology has now reached a point where it’s stable, scalable and can sustain all the modern conveniences of a 21st-century household. Daniel has been installing systems for more than half a decade and said the only constraints on generation now are space and budget. “We have a lot of family and friends coming around to check out our solar system,” says one such alternative power adopter, Billy from Opononi*. “We tell them it’s a good choice; we haven’t had to use the old generator since we got it!” Billy’s house is on family land. However, he decided early on to get off the grid and become self-contained, in a move that has slashed living costs and benefits the environment. It’s also a way

to enjoy technology like television and computers in an area of non-cosmopolitan natural beauty. “It’s nothing we couldn’t afford,” he says of the solar panel and battery bank system Solar Boss installed. “Added to which, it’s very effective. There’s no limitations, and it’s modular. We can add on batteries and panels at any time. I’d recommend it to anybody.” Opononi, south of the Hokianga Harbour, enjoys a similar sunshine hours gradient to the wider northland area. The experience of Billy and his family is pertinent to those who wish to cut their ties with power companies in the region. Daniel, Dargaville’s solar man, says he’s overseen the design and install of systems from farms to luxury homes to small cabins. While wintertime delivers reduced volts, a well-planned-out photovoltaic system can handle the load year-round, especially if it’s built with seasonal changes in mind. *Billy was kind enough to share his solar off-the-grid experiences with us but asked for his full name to be redacted for the sake of privacy.

Building better water systems

by Andy Bryenton

Most of the debate and discussion on the now-mandated Three Waters legislation change has centred around civic councils and how they will adjust to a future. However, there’s a whole other question for rural citizens. It centres on the other side of the Three Waters coin. The new government agency Taumata Arowai, the water quality watchdog aims to monitor water health across the nation. It’s going to be one monumental job. Federated Farmers, for instance, opined that close to 75,000 rural properties will be reclassified as water services providers under the new rules. Any water supply serving two or more households counts and must satisfy the new authority that they are up to a standard similar to town supply. “We asked for anyone supplying less than 50 people to be exempted, but in the end were not heard,” said Federated Farmers national president Andrew Hoggard. “The government has jumped in at the deep end of this pool, and they are likely to drown their officials in the paperwork this decision is going to create.” What does this mean for those building on the farm, expanding quarters for sharemilkers or even adding a granny flat for relatives and guests? The short answer is if this legislation goes through as read, it may be simpler and easier to structure in a separate tank and filter system for each dwelling. There are those talking about a retrofit to perfectly functional existing systems to avoid being caught in

the dragnet and subjected to costly and time-consuming compliance paperwork. Farmers familiar with the checklist needed to operate effluent storage and irrigation systems know all too well what this could mean. The core upgrade indicated for those sticking with their existing system will be filtration, both physical and via ultraviolet exposure methods. With no precise dates set for the roll-out of enforcement and the rest of the Three Waters structure still blocked by debate, groups like Federated Farmers may yet see a softening of the government’s stance and a reduction of that hardline insistence that a tank

supplying two cottages constitutes a water supply system on a par with that of a small town. In the meantime, it’s wise to book in advance for infrastructure like tanks, filters and pumps, as a surge in demand for these and the plumbers who install them may well come hard on the heels of a final decision. We all agree that healthy water is a vital resource; it’s all about how it’s guaranteed, who decides, and who carries the cost.

Electricity saving a real windfall by Andy Bryenton

Off-grid solar is a reality for many rural households, but it’s not at full power all-year-round. Perhaps modern wind generators can fill in the gaps? With 17 wind farms across New Zealand boasting 490 turbines and generating six per cent of its total energy, there’s little doubt that wind power is a burgeoning industry. New farms are being planned, consented and built now. However, if you farm something other than electricity, is a windmill a good addition to your home grid? The mathematics of wind power, coupled with New Zealand’s position in the Southern Ocean, means that it’s in a good situation to get those blades spinning. Turbine output is a function of the cube of the wind speed; that means a high average wind speed equals excellent generation. Wind power, like solar, has become cheaper to install during recent years, and the battery banks that store up the wind’s energy have become more compact and reliable too. Perhaps the best scenario for the farm or lifestyle block owner is a ‘best of both worlds’ approach. It uses photovoltaic solar energy when the sun shines and a windmill at night or during bad weather. It’s easy to see how the peaks and troughs

of each system cancel each other out using this method, at least on average. In summer, the solar panels may do the heavy lifting, while in winter, with longer nights and stormy days, wind power comes to the fore. Wind power works better out in the countryside rather than in the city, where obstacles can disrupt airflow. Even in a rural setting, positioning is of utmost importance, so it’s best to consult a wind power professional when getting a system planned out. While turbines are available online for between $2,000 and $5,000 for a fivekilowatt unit, it’s noteworthy that due to the variable nature of the wind, they will rarely operate at peak capacity for extended periods. There’s also the question of controllers, batteries and other installation infrastructure to account for when getting a quote. For those wishing to go off the grid and forget monthly power bills, investing in a backup for photovoltaic solar energy

A small windmill was once a common sight on farms for pumping water; now, it’s equally likely to generate power

is a wise option. Wind can fill that gap. However, it’s very important to ensure that your home-sized turbine is robust enough

to handle strong gales and can work well in harmony with other generation methods for those times of calm and quiet.

The house that hemp built by Andy Bryenton

Hemp fibre technology is throwing off all those tired old jokes about hippies and cannabis smokers, and shaping up as a gamechanger in the building industry. Banned for decades thanks to its similarity to its infamous cousin, Cannabis sativa, the hemp plant is non-psychoactive but fast-growing and incredibly versatile. Hemp ropes made it possible for Britannia to rule the waves, and hemp paper was once close to overthrowing pulped pine products. Now making hemp into wood is a reality, and it’s shaking up the building trade. In the United States, where the Farms Code has only been altered to allow hemp cultivation since 2018, hemp wood is being used for structural timbers, flooring and even furniture. In stress tests, it’s proven to be stronger than expensive woods like oak or hickory. The price for

“Industrial hemp has been scientifically proven to absorb more CO2”

this rapidly renewed building resource is also competitive. What about New Zealand, though? We know that America is hemp country; George Washington famously grew the stuff himself for the shipping trade. The good news is that hemp grows well here, taking only six months to reach harvest age, as opposed to 25 years for pine trees. While both products are useful for different goals, and pine wood will always be valuable in its own right, farmers are looking closely at hemp as a cash crop that has a quick turnaround. Additionally, hemp’s rapid growth makes for a superior carbon-capture feedstock. The plant also sequesters four times more carbon than a similarly sized forest. Hemp absorbs more than 20 metric tons of carbon a hectare, and its ability to be harvested biannually effectively doubles this quantity. According to GoodEarth Resources, an Australian eco-energy consultancy: ‘Industrial hemp has been scientifically proven to absorb more CO2 for each hectare than any forest or commercial crop and is, therefore, the ideal carbon sink.’ “With all this concern about the environment and the Paris Accord

With an advantage in terms of rapid replacement and carbon sequestration, strong, durable hemp wood may become a major component of future builds

on climate change, and the focus on plastics and so forth, the world is changing, and it’s coming to meet us,” said Dave Jordan of Hemp New Zealand, when asked about the rise of this innovative material. “It’s not really fringe in terms of it being something new. It’s just something that has been rediscovered. We are restoring it to its rightful place in the economy.”

E D U C AT I O N & T R A I N I N G Investing in beef genetics

Work In A Fun & Exciting Industry

by Andy Bryenton

The government is investing in the future of beef cattle herds, with a financial shot in the arm of $16.37 million, set to return a $400 million-plus result in years to come. The seven-year project, in association with the Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures Fund, brings Beef + Lamb New Zealand onboard in a focussed approach to improving cattle genetics. By collaborating with farmers, the aim is to assist biological scientists and animal breeders to identify and maximise traits that allow for cattle to thrive in uniquely New Zealand conditions. “This investment will be used to develop a New Zealand-based genetic evaluation, which will ultimately result in more efficient beef animals, which generate less greenhouse gases and are more profitable,” says programme governance group chair Helen Anderson. In Northland, this might mean hardier, dry-summer resistant beasts who can get the most out of pasture when it’s plentiful, for example. It’s also a chance to do away with the current, Australian-based model. “The new evaluation is groundbreaking because bulls of different breeds can be directly compared. Currently, each beef breed has its own evaluation, which makes genetic selection unnecessarily complicated for the farmer.”

It’s not just beef cattle farmers who will benefit. Dairy herds will also be able to be adapted through specialised breeding to match the environmental conditions of the farms where they live and grow. With a new suite of production-focussed genetic selection tools, dairy farmers will be able to select semen from beef bulls for artificial insemination. Experts opine that dairy farmers will experience shorter gestation times, easier calving and more valuable calves thanks to this advancement. Meanwhile, judging is now underway for the inaugural red sector Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards. A large number of leading farmers were put forward. While the judges are sworn to secrecy until the winners are announced, Northland has several nominees in the running. “Judging is underway, and I do not envy their task,” says B+LNZ CEO Sam McIvor. “There are so many people who deserve the accolades, and while there can only be one winner in each category, the awards evening will be an opportunity for our industry to get together and acknowledge all the entrants and nominees and the work they are doing to make our red meat sector world-leading.”

Service makes the difference by Andy Bryenton

Silverdale’s home of CFMoto may soon also be the home of a very prestigious trophy, as a focus on customer care translates to the best kind of publicity. When it comes to competition in retail, there are few bigger accolades than the Westpac Auckland Business Awards. Becoming a finalist is a proud milestone for Gatmans Mowers and More, a business that has been helping Silverdale and North Auckland people tackle outdoor chores with confidence since back in 1953. In those days, Silverdale was the fringe of the far-off metropolis. While the suburbs and lifestyle blocks of today have covered what were once paddocks and fields, there’s still a demand for old-fashioned customer service. That’s the aspect of the Gatmans’ business that sets them apart. It’s one of the big reasons they’ve been shortlisted from among thousands of businesses for 2021’s excellence in customer service delivery category. “Customer care is something we really focus on,” says Helen Wreaks, who is part of the family-run management team at Gatmans. “It’s a key driver of our business, as it sets us apart from the big box stores. It’s important that we go the extra mile and that we can provide a personalised service based on experience and knowledge.”

Silverdale’s home of CFMoto is Gatmans Mowers and More, a business in the running for a major customer service award

Dealing in everything from home heating to tractors, mobility scooters to chainsaws, and a wide range of mowers and ATVs, the Gatmans team, are all users of the lines they stock. They can offer insight into what’s right for the job, what’s economical, what’s safe and what will be most effective. Specialist staff make for happy customers. “A lot of the time, we can take a machine out to a person’s own property to make sure it’s a good fit,” says Helen. “That way, we know that they’ll be happy with their choice.”

This emphasis on providing tried and tested results means that Gatmans Mowers and More is a great fit for CFMoto. Many of the 11-strong team there not only know the brand inside out — they are CFMoto owners themselves. While we’ll have to wait until March 2022 to see who wins the top prize in the Auckland Business Awards, those looking for a hassle-free summer outdoors can get onto a winner right now by stopping by for a visit in Silverdale.

Polaris has been building electric Rangers since 2010. However, this is the first of a range developed alongside partners Zero Motorcycles, a team that know electric power and its applications. “With the rising interest in electrified vehicles, we are investing in electrification in order to meet the needs of current customers as well as appeal to tomorrow’s power sports riders,” Mike Speetzen, Polaris’ interim CEO, said in a statement at the Ranger’s debut. “The all-new electric Ranger is our latest effort aimed at leading the industry forward in electrified powersports vehicles.” That power-sports tag is very American and reflects the abiding love for the Ranger, which stateside hunters have expressed. Here, the prime market is the Kiwi farmer, and they want more than a sports shooter’s buggy. Thankfully, there’s no such disappointment to be had. There have been no compromises, and the underpinning of the EV is pure Ranger. No matter the power plant, everything in the Ranger stable is made for serious off-road use; the electric offering is no exception.

That means drivers will enjoy a 612kg machine with 30 horsepower on-demand, and lots of low-down torque. It may not be the fastest thing on four wheels, with a top speed of 40km/h. However, it will steadily maintain this speed over terrain that would frighten some quads, relying on its eight big batteries, slung low, to provide a solid and stable centre of gravity. There’s an impressive 960kg of towing capacity available as well. Polaris admits that with 80 kilometres of range for each charge, undertaken overnight via a standard three-pin plug, the electric ranger may not suit the very biggest farms. However, it has a huge advantage for farmers managing livestock; its silent operation won’t spook skittish beasts. It also won’t wake up significant others who may want to get an extra hour’s sleep when early morning off-road trips are necessary. Add this to an incredibly simple drive system with less maintenance and zero fuel bills, the enticement is there to be experienced. Now, if only the government would offer a subsidy for this kind of EV, right farmers?

Safeguarding our essential water services by Emily Henderson, MP for Whangãrei

Most farmers would agree there are some things every New Zealander should enjoy as a right. Medical care if injured, for example, or education as a child. Clean, safe water belongs on the same list, even if we usually only think about it after something goes wrong. Fixing our ageing water infrastructure and guaranteeing safe and affordable water for all New Zealanders is a long-term challenge successive governments have ignored, but we intend to fix. If we don’t act now, water costs in the next 30 years are projected to jump five times for Whangārei. Rural communities in Kaipara and the Far North face a shattering ten-fold leap in costs. With around half of Northlanders living rurally, these costs will hit our region hard. What’s more, at the moment, as many as 34,000 New Zealanders get sick from drinking water each year. Rural communities face the biggest challenge on this front, and all nine water supplies in the Far North have failed to comply with the Health Act in recent years. New legislation says that the regulation of drinking water must be proportionate to the scale, complexity and risk profile of the supply. It differs from the current regime under the Health Act, which is one size fits all. Our new water services regulator has been working directly with rural suppliers on simple, cost-effective solutions for small supplies, such as end-point treatment devices like UV filters. These devices are not recognised under the Health Act, so this NOW AVAILABLE FROM

Ag-Imports

is a big step for rural supplies where most of the water goes to stock or horticulture. Quality stormwater and wastewater management are also vital to healthy community life. We don’t want a future for our children where beaches aren’t safe for swimming because of sewage discharge. The consents of 10 of Whangārei District Council’s wastewater treatment plants are due to expire in the next decade. Reconsenting these to meet environmental standards will be costly for ratepayers without reform. Infrastructure New Zealand supports the government’s decision to progress the Three Waters Reform Programme, which will create four dedicated and

publicly-owned water entities. Without these, we’ll keep seeing burst pipes, contaminated water and skyrocketing costs for households. The reforms will keep these services in the ownership of and held to account by the communities that have contributed to them for decades. They’ll also create jobs and boost growth: here in Northland, the reforms are expected to add up to 210 jobs and increase our GDP by up to 7.9%. Everyone should be able to trust the water in their tap. Communities and households across New Zealand will benefit from this reform, and Northlanders are set to save money and gain better quality water.

ADVERTORIAL

Animal welfare drives innovation by Andy Bryenton

Coming from a background in farming, Edward Simpkin knows that animal welfare is the cornerstone of both ethical agriculture and economic success in the rural sector. He and his partner Raewyn began importing products to benefit the nation’s livestock herds and the people who farm them in 2012, under the name Keri Imports. It was later changed to Ag-Imports to reflect the strong farming ethos of the company. A philosophy of customer care and embracing innovation has informed Edward’s career since he left school and began establishing a well-known name in farming. “It’s all about long-term customer satisfaction,” says Edward. “We aim to achieve the best long term result. People come back to me all the time with stories about how they have seen improvements.” Ag-Imports deliver clever ideas to the farm across a variety of products. Edward has found a keen market for his popular Ag Mat rubber matting solutions, which provide a softer, more stress-free and grip-improving surface to areas where livestock congregate. In a dairy context, this matting can transform the milking parlour and feed pad experience. Users opine that they would never go back to bare concrete.

“Happy cows equal happy farmers,” says Edward. He does not stop at simply putting a firmer footing under Kiwi hooves and gumboots. Ag-Imports have also sourced a range of salt lick feed supplements that can fill the nutrient and mineral gaps present in arid or sub-optimal pastures during those tough times of the year. Once again, stress-free, well-fed and happy cattle add up to better production and fewer calls to the vet. It’s the same story with the health of the soil biota. Edward has long been a proponent of seaweed-based nitrogen fertilisers, and he’s secured a product in this domain that is delivering real, long-term results for his customers. At heart, Edward, and by extension Ag-Imports, are problem-solvers. With many years of expertise and thousands of conversations with Kiwi farmers to draw upon, this company invites you to put their fresh ideas to the test. With summer coming and dry pastures a real possibility, why not begin with a look at the mineral and trace element benefits of a salt lick supplement for your herd?

No Excuses campaign

Recreational boaties on the water, who are not wearing lifejackets or travelling at a safe speed, should expect to be questioned by harbourmasters and Maritime NZ as the annual No Excuses on-water compliance campaign gets underway. The campaign began on October 23 and runs until March 31 next year. It encourages boaties to wear lifejackets and travel at a safe speed. Fines of up to $300 can be handed out to boaties for breaches of regional council bylaws and national maritime rules. “The recent tragedy at the Manukau Bar is a tragic reminder about the inherent dangers of recreational boating,” said Maritime NZ manager Sector Engagement and Collaboration, Baz Kirk. “Data from the last five years of the campaign shows that on average 95 per cent of boats have lifejackets on board. The number of lifejackets being worn, when legally required, decreased from 89 per cent to 80 per cent, which is concerning. “No matter the conditions, boaties should wear a lifejacket at all times. It can make the difference between life or death.” No Excuses began in the summer of 2016 with Maritime NZ and eight councils. It has increased to 18 partners in 2021. “The campaign is a great opportunity to connect with boaties and remind them of the essentials,” said Nelson Maritime Officer, Maritime NZ, Amanda Kerr.

Baz Kirk, Maritime NZ manager Sector Engagement and Collaboration

“We know 98 lives were lost on the water over the last six years, of which 55 per cent could have been prevented if lifejackets were worn. The majority of those who died ended up in the water from falling overboard, the vessel capsizing or being swamped. “The No Excuses campaign will run for five random days in each region over the summer season. This will not be publicised.

In addition, harbourmasters will be out on the water, constantly checking on boaties to ensure they are wearing lifejackets and travelling at safe speeds. “We want everybody to have a great summer on the water. The majority enjoy themselves by staying safe, wearing well-fitted lifejackets and sticking to the speed limits. There will be no excuses for those boaties who break the rules or put themselves and others at risk.” Two million Kiwis were involved in recreational boating last summer.

Lifejacket wearing behaviour amongst recreational boaties is steady at about 75 per cent wearing all or most of the time on the water. Sixty per cent of boats approached carried multiple communication devices and carried VHF communication devices. Fifty-five per cent of those who die in recreational boating accidents each year could be saved if they wear a lifejacket. Find more information at maritimenz. govt.nz click recreational, and on the Safer Boating NZ Facebook page.
