Chicken farm plans founder

Integrity community media

by Paul Campbell

The Northern Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by Integrity Community Media, a privately owned NZ company.

Plans for a massive chicken farm at Arapohue near Dargaville have fallen by the wayside after several months in which community protests, council advice, and then a Tegel share sale to an overseas family-owned company combined to end the project.

Tegel’s plans build a giant farm in Northland were finally halted by the Overseas Investment Office after the poultry distributor applied for consents to set up a broiler chicken operation with a capacity to stock up to 1.3 million chickens in 22 sheds — or a total nine million birds a year. Land Information minister, Eugenie Sage and associate finance minister, David Clark declined the consent under the Overseas Investment Act. The first major blow to the bid came from the Northern Regional Council and the Kaipara District Council, which advised against the project. Public notifications for a resource consent hearing were also overwhelmingly against the farm. In the later stages of the Tegel application, it was revealed that the company had been taken over by Bounty Foods, a privately-owned family company in the Philippines. The takeover was first approved by the OIO, and then the sale of lands to operate the farm was refused. “Minister Clark and I considered that the land sale was not likely to result in substantial and identifiable benefits to New Zealand, so we declined the application,” Minister Sage said. “Tegel’s application was declined because of the considerable uncertainty

about whether the company would obtain the resource consents it required for its proposed Arapohue broiler chicken farm investment. “Both Kaipara District and Northland Regional Council staff recommended the consents be declined and the hearing process has been suspended.” Tegel had applied to buy up 252ha of Northland property to build the facility. Direct Animal Action, a group who protested together with locals has welcomed the OIO action. “We are absolutely ecstatic about this victory!” said Deirdre Sims. “This decision is a win for the people and for the animals.” Ms Sage said the large number of submissions against the Tegel farm was important. “The large number of submissions from community members and Kapehu Marae helped illustrate the difficulties that Tegel would have had in gaining the resource consents it needed to proceed. “Accordingly, it was uncertain whether the claimed benefits of additional jobs and export receipts from the land sale were likely to occur,” she said. In other areas, local business leaders have regretted the loss of investment in jobs and services the Tegel project may have brought to Kaipara.

Room for improvement on M bovis Fifty-seven per cent of farmers recently surveyed reported they had taken precautions against the disease while 71 per cent of farmers feel that they have a high level of knowledge on how to protect their stock from M bovis. According to Beef + Lamb New Zealand, around a third of farmers surveyed said they had implemented a buffer zone between them and their neighbours’ stock, as well as communicating with their neighbours about stock on the boundary. “The impact of Mycoplasma bovis has been especially tough on farmers whose herds have been infected, so it’s good to see that information about protecting stock from Mycoplasma bovis is being taken onboard by farmers,” says B+LNZ’s general manager policy and advocacy, Dave Harrison. “The survey highlights that where farmers have identified a risk to their stock, they are taking actions to reduce the risk of them being exposed to the disease. At the same time, the incursion of Mycoplasma bovis reinforces the need for every farm to have an active biosecurity plan in place.” Other changes identified by farmers included an increased focus on yard hygiene — 19 per cent, and not buying any calves or cattle this year because of concerns about the infection — 17 per cent. Of the remaining farmers who had made few or no changes because of

M bovis, these were predominantly farmers who ran closed or isolated systems, such as breeders, or were sheep farmers who had no cattle. The survey also identified areas where more support can be provided to farmers. Forty-one per cent of farmers indicated that they have or are working on a biosecurity plan for their farm, while farmers were also requesting more up-to-date tracking information on the spread of the disease. Farmers who didn’t have, or were working on a biosecurity plan, a significant number were looking to implement a plan but weren’t sure where to start. While the survey showed that farmers are generally comfortable with the level of support they are receiving, B+LNZ will be providing more resources to help farmers both apply for compensation as well as speed up the processing of claims. B+LNZ will also be rolling out biosecurity workshop events to help farmers start and improve their on-farm biosecurity plans. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY AYLA MILLER McLeod’s Brewery head brewer Jason Bathgate remembers his first sip of beer during a camping trip as a boy.

A

lthough he didn’t realise it at the time, this was a moment that would be later remembered as his first encounter with a product he would go on to make a career out of. Originally a chef from Vermont, Jason was always interested in food and wine — but it wasn’t until he moved to New Zealand from the United States that he began brewing his own beer. “I spent a year-and-a-half making homebrew and really getting into it before I decided I wanted to make a career out of it,” he said.

Jason began his journey into the industry by volunteering at a brewery in Blenheim for seven months. They recognised his passion for the craft, and it wasn’t long before they had snapped him up and offered him a full-time job. He later moved onto another company, which eventually opened a brewery in Warkworth and as a dedicated employee with a passion for his trade, Jason followed. Mcleod’s Pizza Barn at Waipu was already a favourite amongst locals for good food, and when Geoff and Clayton

The brewery: where the magic happens

Gwynne bought the establishment in 2003 — the only thing missing was a range of good craft beer. Craft beer was something they had acquired a taste for during their travels. So they set about starting a brewery right out the back of the pizza barn and here McLeod’s Brewery was born. Jason joined McLeod’s two and a half years ago as head brewer, and one of his first tasks was starting a barrel program with assistant brewer Milton Mewett to ensure a variety in the range of beers for the future. After working in frantic kitchens as a chef for most of his former life — Jason

found the brewing process to be a lot less stressful. “I was fascinated by the introduction of this tiny bacteria and how it turned into a quality product.” Jason has since played a big part in the brewery — winning nine medals including four gold medals and a trophy for Best International at the 2017 Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Awards and is passionate about making good beer. He says the secret lies in the yeast and using quality ingredients. From the core India Pale Ale, which is heavy on the hops, to their blended Smugglers Bay Collection — Jason and

rest of the McLeod’s brew crew pride themselves on offering a beverage for any palate. Initially, a brewery begun to complement the already popular selection of food at McLeod’s Pizza Barn; it wasn’t long before McLeod’s Brewery took on a life of its own.

“When I first started it was really laid back and cruisey, but not anymore. We are much more busy now.” He now lives in Waipu with his wife, and they are enjoying everything the North has to offer. “I love the lifestyle in Northland, and the beaches are beautiful.”

Gary Bignell left school more than 30 years ago at 16 years old and completed his diploma in horticulture, specialising in stonefruit and working in a cherry orchard.

ince then, Gary and his wife Steph have spent the majority of their lives dedicated to producing and selling the freshest cherries direct to customers all over New Zealand. Recently they launched their own brand of cherry juice, which they created to share the health benefits of their much-loved fruit. “Dad grew up here in Blenheim and was always involved

in cherries as that is where he first started work and he learnt on the job. We planted our own orchard here 10 years ago because it is a good growing region,” said their son and general manager, Cameron. “Cherries grow really well in Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough or Central Otago due to the very cold winters and hot, dry summers — but there are a few

orchards in other places. We love working with the fruit because it is such a seasonal product, they are a flavoursome healthy treat that are only around for eight weeks of the year, and people enjoy giving and receiving them, especially as a Christmas gift.” The family grow approximately nine varieties of sweet cherries. “They all ripen at different times during the season. We get the best just before Christmas, and the late ones stretch our harvesting season out. They all have slightly different tastes, colours, sizes and shapes and it is very difficult to tell the difference.” The family have planted nearly 20,000 trees on their 70 acre property. “It is a sizeable orchard and takes a lot of work to maintain. We follow strict pest control programmes that are used only when necessary to deter bugs,” says Cameron. “For years we noticed the health benefits of cherries at the start of each season because our sleeping patterns would significantly improve — but we would then slip back into restless nights when the season finished. “We could only make use of the fruit for those eight weeks of the year, and we wanted to work out a way to get people their cherry fix all year-round, so we started research to create the cherry juice.” It took the family three years to develop their product. Cameron’s siblings, Renee and Jacob, are also involved in the business, and they receive emails daily from customers saying they sleep better or get relief

from gout and arthritis. It is used in cooking, pouring over ice cream, in salad dressings and as a health tonic. “It could have been perfected quicker if we added chemical agents and preservatives but we took the time to produce a 100 per cent natural product. We had great support from other New Zealand business owners who were pretty open with their advice. “Research shows that sweet cherries grown in New Zealand are a natural source of melatonin — more than 30 times higher than other varieties. This hormone is necessary for not just sending you to sleep, but also helping you stay asleep. “The fruit also contains extremely high levels of anthocyanins, which have powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Michigan State University research found ‘the anthocyanins that make cherries red could also help relieve pain more effectively than aspirin’ and they may reduce osteoarthritis by working directly on inflammation, through the positive effects of anthocyanins.” A study by the Boston University Medical Centre found that ‘cherry intake was associated with a 50 per cent lower risk of gout flares over a 48-hour period’ due to lowering uric acid levels. “Every weekend our family sell juice at different markets all over New Zealand and let people taste the product. “Many of our customers, including farmers, have seen beneficial results with as little as 50ml of juice per night. For severe conditions, we recommend increasing the daily intake to 100ml

The family grow sweet red cherries and have nearly 20,000 trees in their orchard

and you can also just drink it every day. We have 10 months between cherry seasons, and are constantly learning about other potential products. “There are not many cherry byproducts available and we source fruit from other growers. “The more we can produce the better it is for all growers as we are helping each other. “Our parents’ passion has been amazing and to get the juice stable and as good as it is was a huge investment. It took a lot of foresight and vision, and they had the will to continue despite failed attempts, even when others said it wouldn’t work and they are wasting their time. “They deserve the success they are getting.”

by Ann van Engelen Red Devon cattle were the passion of Lee Fulton, which started in 1972 and saw her help establish the breeding group Progressive Red Devon.

“B

reeders from all over New Zealand joined the group and shared their wealth of knowledge and thanks to them the breed has gained positive momentum,” says Lee’s son, John Cameron. Lee died suddenly in 2015 and John, and his wife Michelle purchased her farm to carry on the ‘passion for red’. “We call the property Lees Valley Red Devon in mum’s memory, and we have a Facebook page and videos on YouTube to show others how the farm is going. We know she is still very much here watching over us and her cattle. “Mum loved the docility, ease of calving and foraging ability the cattle

have, and she farmed this steep hill country property with minimal help. We spread her ashes on the back hill and predominantly have the same herd.” The farm is exposed to the elements, with the back hill being higher than the Brynderwyns’ summit. “When the weather is rough in winter, the cows go into the bush block to forage and keep warm. Michelle runs the property, whilst I work full-time.” With the help of their two sons, Threy and Jaydon, the family have managed to complete tasks Lee hadn’t finalised. “As a city slicker, I actually feel that I am where I am meant to be for the first time in my life. new yards, put in a new crush and a ‘red’ shed from Coopers Barn and Shed company. We have replaced and added fencing, and upgraded the water system. We are very lucky that Threy and Jaydon help and Threy is experienced with fencing, teaching his dad a trick or two,” says Michelle. “Mum started using biological fertiliser some 20 years ago, and we continue this with amazing results. We also use mum’s special ‘lick mix’, which contains magnesium, copper, salt and liquid gold and we have added dolomite. It is a key when calving because during pregnancy cows require more minerals and like humans, magnesium keeps them calm. “Generally when a cow has calved you watch your back if you go near them, but these Red Devons are very obliging and if you need to tag a calf or it is in trouble you can see the cow’s concern and she lets you help. “We highly recommend biological farming; our stock is calm because of the goodness in the feed. We were lucky that the base was there in the humus part of the soil. Biological farming means the land is being worked with, not against. We place the minerals on the property up as high as possible. Each paddock is a ‘salad bowl’ with a good variety of grasses and plants to choose from. Each year, Grant Fallon from Total Fert takes soil samples and works out what is needed in minerals, and then the natural fertiliser is applied to the property by plane.

Red Devon cattle are liked for their ease of calving, foraging ability and docility amongst other things

“They say for success ‘20 per cent is the breeding and 80 per cent is the feeding’. If you overfeed, you have issues. It is my first year calving alone, and the steepness of the property means the girls get exercise during pregnancy and this helps with the births, we don’t seem to have problems. The babies generally have a small head and little shoulders for ease of calving.” This year, the family sold 25 bulls and had orders for heifers. “To ensure our progeny remains top class, we keep the premium, and we sell the rest, which are still very good

9

John and Michelle work with the Progressive Red Devon Group to promote the cattle across the country

stock. Our calves stay with the mum for approximately eight months, so they get the best start in life. “We have amazing support from our friends Rose and Carl Cookson and Gavin Cooper. As we are new to this lifestyle — their advice and support are invaluable. Gavin leads the way with AI, and together we plan up to three years in advance what bulls to use for the best breeding stock. We get 50 per cent heifers and bulls, and we are building up our herd.” Michelle says developing on from Lee, means ‘the sky is the limit’ — so watch this breed.

“The meat has beautiful marbling and is excellent eating. It is in a class of its own. Our friend, Graham Dyke, won his category of bronze, silver and gold in the Steak of Origin competition with three Red Devon heifers and people are encouraging us to enter this year. “I have mucked up lots but I farm with my heart, and my husband and sons are my rocks. It is great being a part of the Progressive Red Devon Group, as we are able to promote this beautiful breed together. We work as a team, and mum would be very pleased to see how far we have come.”

Leading the way into China Just Avocados has completed their first commercial shipment of New Zealand Avocados into China making them the first New Zealand avocado exporter to do business in the market after access was gained earlier this year. The fruit, which was harvested in the Bay of Plenty and packed at the Just Avocados packing facility, is being marketed by Win-Chain Supply Chain Management Ltd — the aggregated fresh food global sourcing centre for Alibaba Group. “We have a partnership with the leader in the fresh produce retail space who has a reach across physical supermarkets and e-commerce platforms,” says GM group sales and marketing for Darling Group, Jacob Darling, who represents Just Avocados’ fruit in export markets. Darling Group’s branded avocado, Jake’s Avocado, is currently featured for purchase across several e-commerce platforms that fall under the Alibaba Group’s umbrella. “We are really pleased with the level of promotion, celebration and excitement that we have worked with our partner in China on to surround the launch of our avocados. “Media engagement, a physical launch event, online video and extensive use of imagery and information on websites to tell the story of where our avocados come from and the benefits over other origins.” At this early stage,

there is positive indication around returns for growers from China. “We recognise this is a work in progress and it will take time to develop the brand and understanding of avocados among consumers. However, we are off to a fantastic start, and the return is currently higher than what we had initially forecast.” Darling noted that its Chinese partner has been most interested in promoting the nutritional points of the New Zealand avocado but also the origins of their family-owned company. “Win-Chain is particularly interested in us [Just Avocados and Darling Group] because we are growers, packers and exporters, we control the supply chain and are vertically integrated meaning we can support the China market longterm. They also like the fact that we are a family-owned business and have family working across different areas of the supply chain.” Darling Group has committed 15,000 trays to the China market this season with the strategic approach of continuing to develop the Asia market as a whole — but with China placed as the major pillar for Just Avocados’ growers going forward.

The pinch at the pump by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Living in rural New Zealand means driving our cars to and from work, to do the shopping and even — often — to get the kids to school. All absolute necessities. That means we are familiar with the necessity of pulling into the petrol station as a regular ritual. Recently, and under this government, that process has got more and more expensive with Kiwis feeling the pinch at the pump. We are now facing record high petrol prices. The national price has rocketed to a high (at the moment) of $2.409. For everyday families around New Zealand, it now costs an extra $20 to refuel cars. For us in the rural community, with the distances we travel, it is even worse. Furthermore, when we think it couldn’t get any worse, the government cuts $5 billion from building regional roads and shifts that money to help fund a tram set for Auckland. To say I am livid about that, is to put it mildly. It is not good enough! Fortunately, National has a different plan. Under the next National government, we would restore funding for regional roading projects right

WHEN DO YOU WANT TO PICK?

around the country, get government spending under control (and not as ideologically focussed) and drive down the escalating costs driven by these petrol increases. We have pledged to abolish regional fuel taxes and to fight to have them being put in place. We are also committed to investing in major transport projects up and down the country — not just in Auckland. Unfortunately, though, that is in the future. More immediately, we are in for more pain at the pump. Further tax increases are planned for 2019 and 2020, and a regional fuel tax will be available right through New Zealand by 2021. So, we in the regions are in limbo and will continue to be — at least until we can restore some common sense. You know what that means.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

AG CONTRACTORS Post-winter cultivation is critical The future of farming could be at risk if the quality and extent of our soils are not maintained. “Sediment and nutrients from farming operations, along with pathogenic microbes, are some of the most important causes of reduced water quality during the post-winter period, when farmers are cultivating their paddocks,” says sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “Topsoil erosion, especially in hill country, of bare or cultivated land, leads to the loss of valuable nutrients, and

disrupts infrastructure and increases the costs of maintenance such as cleaning culverts and drains. “Landowners and cultivation contractors can help mitigate the environmental risks associated with cultivation and protect their soil resources. The greatest risk can be when the protective plant cover is lost through the cultivation of soils for pasture renewal and crop establishment.” Soils should be cultivated when the moisture content is neither too high nor too low. “To assess if soils are suitable for primary cultivation, take a piece of soil, half the volume of an index finger, and press firmly to form a pencil. “Roll the soil into a ‘worm’ on the palm of one hand with the fingers of the other to about 50mm long and 4mm thick. Exert sufficient pressure with your fingers to reduce the diameter of the worm to 4mm in 15–20 complete forward and back movements of the fingers. Conditions are suitable for cultivation if the soil cracks before the worm is made. Soil is too wet if you can make the worm.”

Contour cultivation, sowing at right angles to the prevailing wind, reducing run-off is recommended for minimising soil loss. Sediment and nutrients are carried to streams in the overland flow of water. Establish filter strips where water enters water bodies — healthy riparian vegetation improves bank stability, increases water quality, reduces stock losses, filters surface run-off and provides wildlife habitat. “Good riparian vegetation slows runoff down so that sediment, phosphorus

and faecal matter settle out before reaching waterways.” Up to 90 per cent of sediment can be caught and trapped faecal bacteria in grass strips will die off — grasses should be 15cm high minimum with a high density of stems and leaves at ground level for maximum trapping. “The spread of pests, particularly weeds and pathogens, by vehicles, cultivation machinery and equipment has significant consequences so machinery hygiene must be practised any time a machine is moved between properties.”

Cleaning to prevent M bovis

TOKATOKA LIME

It has been more than a year since Mycoplasma bovis was first detected in New Zealand and DairyNZ continues to be actively involved in the situation across many areas of the response. The risk of spreading M bovis bacteria between farms on machinery is low, however it is good biosecurity practice to have a ‘clean on, clean off’ policy for both machinery and people, which will protect your farm business from weeds, pests, and diseases. Insist all machinery coming onto your property is thoroughly clean, and expect it to be cleaned before it leaves your property. Disinfectant should be used ‘after’ cleaning vehicles, equipment and boots/gear that have been in contact with stock or effluent — disinfectant does not work through dirt. Remember the rule for machinery, vehicles and equipment, whether your own, visitors or contractors — separate, clean and disinfect. Ask if it needs to come on-farm — ‘if not, keep it off’ and limit visitors to your property. Do not allow any used equipment onto your farm that has not been cleaned and then disinfected — this includes boots, overalls and protective clothing. Provide a rubbish bin for dirty gloves, disposable overalls and other rubbish and have a place, with a scrubbing brush for visitors to wash their equipment, with a separate area and soap to wash hands. Keep stock trucks away from animal areas and have loading facilities close to the tanker track. Check with the

13

Co Ltd

Suppliers of good quality agricultural lime

trucking company that their vehicles are cleaned and disinfected after each client’s stock is moved. The tanker track must be kept clean with a ‘no go’ zone for stock to this area. Disinfect to destroy or inactivate the ‘bugs’ — apply the disinfectant and leave it to soak, so it works. Change disinfectant regularly — any common agricultural disinfectants are effective against Mycoplasma bovis bacteria. Use the product according to the label directions or alternatively, you can use 0.2 per cent Citric acid — one teaspoon in one-litre of water. When disinfecting the farm dairy, you are required to use approved maintenance compounds.

DairyNZ has developed many resources, including the Biosecurity WOF. Check out dairynz.co.nz/mbovis for everything you need to know about M bovis and biosecurity. If you are affected by M bovis, need support with form filling, getting access to feed, forming management plans, or you just need someone to talk to or get advice from, phone 0800 4324 7969 or email info@ dairynz.co.nz to arrange a visit from a member of the support team.

Getting the contract tender right The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how farmers can implement safeguards in the often complex process of tendering for work required in order to reap the best rewards.

“Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,” the ministry advises. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term

meaning ‘Request for information’, a quote, a proposal or tender. “An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straightforward. However, applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. “Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise.” Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as

winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply. “You will need to think about the dayto-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself — do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment. “There are myriad considerations, and each approach may require a different viewpoint. In essence, a good contract will be the result of good homework and planning.”

Food safety a priority Fishing is a much-loved tradition for many New Zealanders and before heading out for the big catch, make sure you are aware of any possible health risks in the area such as biotoxins and pollutants, which can affect fish and shellfish. The Ministry for Primary industries tests shellfish and seawater samples around New Zealand each week to ensure they are not contaminated with biotoxins from blooms of toxic algae. Public warnings are issued when shellfish are unsafe to eat. With the weather getting warmer, and more people out gathering food from the ocean and rivers, for the safety of yourself and your loved ones, only collect food from uncontaminated water as shellfish can happily live in contaminated water and pick up and store whatever biotoxins, pollution and pathogens — bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that cause illness in people. Fish taken from sewage-contaminated water can carry bacteria and viruses that can make you extremely ill. Eating raw or lightly cooked fish does not kill pathogens, and no amount of cooking will destroy biotoxins or other chemical contaminants they may have

DOC aerial pest control operation. DOC asked MPI to assess this risk and to provide advice on a caution period for anglers to ensure food safety. Based on MPI’s risk assessment of a scenario where trout eat 1080 baits that may have fallen in a waterway. MPI conducted a risk assessment in 2014 based on a scenario where trout eat large quantities of mice poisoned by 1080. The conclusion from that assessment was a very low risk of toxicity to humans from eating the trout. While it is thought the chance of trout consuming 1080 is minimal, MPI advises anglers to wait seven days after a 1080 baiting operation to minimise any food safety concerns. Go to the DOC website for a map of 1080 dropzones. No matter who you are, when fishing and gathering seafood of any kind, remember it is a resource everyone needs to protect for future generations. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Lifestyle Block Services Natives for wildlife When planning on planting around your waterways, cowsheds or gardens, providing food and shelter for native wildlife is easy and worth considering in your plan. Your choice of plants can invite the birds and bees over by providing the right supply of food. If the task is too daunting, consider hiring a contractor or landscaper to help with the early stages of preparation and design. Visiting your local plant nursery can also be an advantage — as staff can generally recommend what plants best suit the climate and environment you are planning on growing in. A small garden can still attract birds with tui, bellbird and kereru - native wood pigeon searching for flowers and fruit. It is often recommended to use ecosourced plants that naturally occur in your area. These could include kowhai, flax, kakabeak, and tarata for nectar; and wineberry, karamu, and korokia for fruit. Planting flax, guava, loquats, grapes, miro, nikau and other favourites for

birds near your house means you get the joy of watching them benefit from your decisions. However, avoid planting too close to the house as reflections on windows can confuse birds and a number of kereru are killed every year trying to fly through panes of glass. Birds such as fantail, grey warbler and silvereye are insect eaters and enjoy a healthy mix of spiders, moths, beetles and earthworms. A good layer of compost, mulch or leaf litter on the garden will encourage insects, and birds are a natural way of keeping them under control. Ruru - morepork, and kingfisher eat insects as well as mice. Some native birds have become wary about feeding on the ground — so consider growing ground creepers like Fuchsia procumbens in a hanging basket, which add red berries to your scenery hanging down. Climbing plants

DECIDUOUS TREES

like crimson rata or New Zealand passionfruit grow well along a wall or over a pergola. If your space is limited growing plants in containers can be successful, and shrubs like kakabeak can be shaped to fit the design of garden you choose. Wildlife has different requirements for nesting sites and hiding places. Kingfisher and morepork, prefer standing dead trees whilst lizards will use fallen logs. Many areas of native bush and wetlands are now small and paced across the landscape, so gardens often help birds move between these areas.

Stoats, rats, weasels, possums, cats and hedgehogs prey on birds, including their eggs and nestlings. If you want to keep the birds flourishing, controlling pests is a must. Setting traps and laying poisons in bait stations are options for control. Remember there are numerous hybrids and cultivars of native plants developed for garden situations. These should not be planted in or near natural bush to avoid cross-pollination. Your local plant nursery or contractor should be able to advise you further on which species are best to plant.

LIFESTYLE BLOCK SERVICES

Looking after your block

Depending on the size of your lifestyle property and what you are using it for determines how much time you will need to put into it to keep it running efficiently. If you mostly use it as a lifestyle of open spaces, privacy and enjoyment of the natural surrounds, you will have less to do than if you are keeping animals, growing crops or an orchard. If you are running a bed and breakfast or similar business, you will need to ensure your landscaping is kept in top condition. To keep your lawns looking beautiful make sure you know the right height for mowing and when to fertilise, weed and water. Research or get advice from a local nursery about what plants best suit your area and your individual wants or desires and visit your local lawnmower shop for options on machinery you may need from the beginning. There are jobs that need to be done on a regular basis, which can be dealt with by local contractors — meaning you won’t have to worry about timing or the how to’s if you are unsure. Things such as making sure you have the correct fencing, trimming or removing old trees and shelterbelts, checking drains are clear, pruning orchards, hay or silage making are time-consuming, and it is important the person doing the job does it correctly. Contractors can also make maintenance plans for drive and roadside upkeep as well as top dressing and other necessary jobs. The benefit of planning maintenance jobs regularly with an expert means your property is always kept in optimum condition, benefitting yourself and any animals you have. Using contractors

MARC HACKETT CONTRACTING LTD “No Job Too Small”

means you do not need to outlay the finances for machinery and equipment, let alone the expense of maintenance and repairs if something goes wrong. Don’t forget to get to know your local vet as well for those animal emergencies and to establish that you know what any animals you keep on your property need for correct care, such as hoof trimming and farrier work for the horses if you

have them, worming and when to employ a shearer to keep you sheep shorn. The more you care for your lifestyle block, the more opportunity you will have for it to give back to you, whether it be in animal health, crops or simple self-preservation of a relaxed life. Remember — maintenance and upkeep is key to looking after that which is there for your enjoyment.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Wilson Earthmoving Group Dargaville-based company Wilson Earthmoving Group has steadily grown in size and operation since starting up more than 20 years ago, with a small fleet of owner-operated earthmoving machinery. Now with divisions in Dargaville and Mangawhai, employing more 55 people, the business is still expanding their forestry, rural development and civil works in Northland. “Our work is diverse and includes roading, house sites, subdivisions, farm infrastructure and drainage,” says general manager, Anthony Green. “As a company, we have seen that there is a shortfall of skilled heavy machinery operators in the civil construction industry, so we are now in the process of opening our own training centre.” The new Whangarei-based training centre aims to take people through to NZQA level in heavy machinery operation, allowing graduates to work in a variety of areas including forestry, civil, construction and farming. “We will be using Caterpillar simulators, imported from the USA. These will not only be used to train new people to the industry but also offers the opportunity for more experienced operators to upskill in key areas. “Our past projects demonstrate the company’s capabilities and diversity which includes earthworks at Gibbs Farm, a privately-owned open-air sculpture park, moving seven hectares of earth to landscape an area for new sculptures.” Wilson Earthmoving also played a key role in the beach landing of the new fibre optic cable from Hawaii at

Mangawhai, dragging the cable off the ship and burying it along the beach ready for connection. “Last year Auckland Grammar School contracted our company to complete their playing fields to within three to fivemillimetre tolerances with our state of the art laser levelling skid steer.” The fleet is predominantly Caterpillar equipment including metal cartage trucks, bulldozers, rollers, motor scrapers and graders. The company’s workshop services the entire fleet from

earthmoving equipment to light vehicles. “We recently added a hydraulic hose repair truck, which is integral to keeping the fleet moving and improves internal efficiencies and are the only authorised Pirtek agent in Dargaville. “That means we can now offer hose doctor services to the public, visiting a

range of sites including businesses and local farms. “Our retail division sells Gulf Oil products, automotive parts and an extensive range of batteries direct to the public. At Wilsons, we are proud to be involved with the future prospects for Northland and its people.”

As a bonus, the antioxidant complex had stimulated her energy processes and was feeling much better in herself. After five months she was now able to cycle again. “Organised by a dedicated group of volunteers maintaining a tradition since 1970, it is second only to the Alexandra Blossom Festival. This year, the event starts with the Kowhai Festival Movie Night — A Fistful of Dollars — taking place on Friday, October 26 outside at Shoesmith Domain,” says festival chair, Murray Chapman. “The Huge Day Out will be held on Saturday, October 27 with the annual Canoe Showdown on Sunday, October 28 with a one-hour special heritage cruise on the historic Jane Gifford at 10.30am and Warkworth heritage trail walk starting at 11.30am also on offer. “We see some 18,000 people come each year and enjoy the celebrations with more than 200 stalls presenting a wide range of mostly local products for sale and a stage down by the wharf with food and live music.” Raising funds for Hospice, The Great Debate is set for Friday, November 2. “This is two hilarious debates with 200-plus people having a good laugh and enjoying amazing finger food organised by Warkworth Toastmasters. Tickets are $35 each, and approximately $20,000 has been raised for Hospice over the years. “The museum will also be holding an open day. A lot of community groups come together with their goods and exhibit. It is a real family day out to enjoy the food, mechanical bucking bull,

face painting, the dog show, inflatables and go-carts. It is very much ‘all the fun at the fair’, and the shops in town dress their windows, and the staff and children come along in wild west costumes. There is a licensed area down by the wharf so you can sit with grandma or grandpa and listen to the live music and enjoy a beverage.” This year, there will be a wellness area including natural therapies and massage. “The idea started with Rotary, Lions and Jaycees as a means of getting people together. Organised by volunteers, on the day we have 40–50 volunteers walking the street helping people — it really is a magic festival. It is nice to look down from the park and think ‘we put this together’. “Next year, we will be celebrating 50 years. Our town is growing, and we want to retain that small town feel as much as possible. We have some really good acts, and dogs can come along — on a lead. “The festival celebrates the bloom of the Kowhai tree and all things that make Rodney a great place to live. We will have small Kowhai trees for sale, and we would love to see more farmers celebrating with us and using the day as a way to get off-farm and enjoy social time together.” For more information go to kowhaifestival.nz. 21 OCTOBER

I have no doubt that within three months she will be more comfortable. Others have complex problems. A woman in her 60s contacted me early this year and had problems with OA in her hands, knees, hip and back with sciatica down one leg. She had restricted mobility and also was very tired. I created a comprehensive support programme for her to reduce inflammation throughout her body, to improve circulation and improve energy. It included an intensive supplement programme for the first three months. This programme included high doses of omega-3 fish oil to supplement her high omega-3 and low omega-6 diet. I then added my joint support programme. It is a little different than many as it is high in chondroitin sulphate (CS). Studies confirm the benefits of high doses of CS. I started her on 1,600mg of CS, with 1,600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of a high potency, rapid absorption curcumin (from turmeric) complex. We then added a potent multi-

Capitalise on quality lumber

The largest-ever New Zealand forest industry delegation to China’s showcase Global Wood Trade Conference has made a case for more investment in New Zealand forestry and timber processing. Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir, told delegates at Chongqing that more timber processing in New Zealand, before export, reduced the overall energy and carbon emissions required to produce and transport the finished product. “There is also a particular opportunity for primary processing of pruned logs in New Zealand rather than the current approach of mixing quality logs with sapdegraded logs and a subsequent loss of value by both parties,” said Mr Weir. New Zealand forest growers and processors repor t constructive engagement with members of the China Timber and Wood Products Distribution Association — the hosts of the Chongqing Conference. The CTWPD has thousands of members across China, and there has been interest from them in both the opportunities to invest in forests and processing in New Zealand, as well as securing additional wood supply. Mr Weir says the China national forestry group have already invested in New Zealand and are becoming more discriminating about the logs they buy. “The industrial grade logs are not so popular in China now as they would rather pay more for our better logs,” he says.

“The log market is moving toward appearance grade products for building quality furniture. They are concerned about chemicals in custom board and now want solid wood furniture. The preference means they are automatically after a higher grade product and New Zealand is facing competition with Europe — that is what we have seen in Shanghai and Beijing. The market is pretty sophisticated there with sawn products from Russia, Far East and Eastern Europe as well as Finland.” Mr Weir says China talks about the ‘one road — one belt’ policy. “The one road is the railway line between China and their suppliers and the belt is a conveyor belt. We can’t afford to sit on our logs because there is plenty of competition. There is little point in sending our best pruned trees as logs into the interior of China as the ‘blue sap’ staining them makes them less desirable and devalued. They should be going through a sawmill in New Zealand and pruned and dried, prior to export as sawn lumber of the highest grade logs.” He says these are basically all grown on farms and lifestyle blocks. “Exporting ‘top-quality lumber’ from your lifestyle block or farm will capture

the furniture market as we are up against sawn logs from Finland that get there in 14 days instead of more than 20 for here. Chonqing, for example, is a city of 30 million people — that is a lot of opportunity for solid wood.”

Winning with timber designs The 2018 NZ Wood-Resene Timber Design Awards saw timber industry and design professionals demonstrating new and different ways to use timber meeting all building codes. “In a market crowded with grand designs and wonderful claims for every construction material, New Zealand timber is proving just how versatile and cost-effective it is,” said Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association promotions manager, Debbie Fergie. “These awards have again proved how imaginative design and structural integrity can combine to deliver beautiful timber buildings.” Judges agreed that all entries demonstrated a love of expressing timber in its many different applications. Entrants competed within 10 categories covering everything from residential and commercial architectural excellence to engineering innovation, multi-storey construction and student innovation. Structural performance and aesthetic excellence were highlighted across all categories. The Resene Supreme Award went to the iconic He Tohu Document Centre within the National Library, inspired by the form and function of a waka huia — treasure container. This entry also won the Niagara Timber Products’ Interior Innovation category. “This is the perfect vessel to display the founding documents of Aotearoa,” said the judges. “Highly developed manufacturing technologies are

woven together with traditional timber materials, showcasing how timber can deliver technological, social and cultural value in a beautiful way.” Runner-up was Cymon Allfrey’s Family Bach in Hanmer Springs, which also won the CHH Woodproducts Futurebuild Residential Architectural Excellence Award. NZ Farm Forestry sponsored winner for the NZ Specialty Timber category was the Pukapuka Road house in Rodney. Judges were impressed that ‘pickled’ timbers were sourced from Northland rivers, and as a result have purple, green and blue hues along with the traditional browns. Plant and Food Research’s Seafood Research Centre won Nelson Pine Industries’ Excellence in Engineered Wood Products categor y, and commended was Warren and Mahoney’s Wellington International Airport project. The judges said: “The curved structural forms demonstrate how timber can be integrated with steel and glass using precision manufacturing and careful attention to detail, and showcase the potential and capabilities of the whole New Zealand timber industry.” Te Pa Tauira-Otago Polytechnic Student Village in Dunedin won the XLam NZ Multi-Storey Timber Building Award. Trade dispute hits log price New Zealand’s export log market took a hit from the trade dispute between the US and China as the declining value of the yuan reduced the buying power of the country’s largest log market. The average price for New Zealand A-grade export logs dropped to US$133/ JAS from US$141/JAS in August, and US$145/JAS in July, and is now the lowest since June 2017, according to AgriHQ’s Forestry Market Report for September. “The Chinese log market has again dominated talk in the NZ forestry industry amid its sudden depreciation these past two months. Purely from a data perspective August and early September don’t make for pretty reading,” AgriHQ analyst, Reece Brick said in his report. “All of this weakness is directly related to the reduction in Chinese buying power, itself due to the depreciation of the CNY:USD.”

The yuan has depreciated 7.5 percent since mid-June, recently trading at 6.8763 for each US dollar. Mr Brick said that despite the fall, market sentiment has stayed ‘quite positive’ as factors such as port-level inventories, offtake rates and shipping rates otherwise point towards healthy fundamentals for New Zealand log trading in China. “Consensus among the majority of traders is that we have settled at the bottom of the market for at least the time being. Chinese demand for New Zealand logs has been strong over recent years after Asia’s largest economy clamped down on the harvesting of its own forests and reduced tariffs on imported logs to meet demand in its local market.

However, trade tensions between the US and China have dented the value of the Chinese currency and traders fear rising tariffs will hurt economic growth and dampen demand. “What the future looks like will largely be dictated by the actions of the Trump administration. The latest round of 10 per cent tariffs covering US$200 billion of Chinese products is yet to be felt within the log industry. The main headache is that there is no end in sight for the trade war. It is expected the latest tariffs will be lifted to 25 per cent by Christmas, while Trump has threatened to extend

these tariffs to another US$267 billion worth of Chinese products. “Given log demand is so closely tied to economic growth, we can only hope these two powerhouses can settle their differences sooner rather than later. Just don’t count on it. “Neither India nor South Korea, New Zealand’s other major log markets, have provided any significant relief for exporters either. The weaker New Zealand exchange rate against the US dollar had offered some protection for local export traders against the depreciation within China.”

Contractors encourage teamwork

Oi!

The new presidential team, leading Rural Contractors New Zealand says the organisation plays an invaluable role in educating and upskilling contractors and promoting their interests. Recently elected president, Southland contractor David Kean, and new vice president Waikato contractor Helen Slattery are both second-generation contractors. David was vice president for five years and runs the sheep dipping and weed spraying business with his sons Jarrod and Nicol that his father Leo started in 1966. Helen has been on the board for six years, and with her husband, Roger runs the contracting business that Roger’s father and uncle started in the mid-1950s. They also operate a collection service and compacting unit for Plasback, recycling waste silage film throughout New Zealand. Helen is also on the Waikato Regional Council committee that is developing a long-term management plan to deal with velvet-leaf and other intrusive weeds, pests and viruses. “With growing concerns about M bovis and other biosecurity threats, it has never been more important for farmers to hire contractors who hold registered or qualified contractor status,” she said. David first attended an RCNZ conference in 2000.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to talk with like-minded contractors and benchmark my business against theirs. It is a great place to learn about the latest technology and get updates on changes to employment and tax law, health and safety, and other regulations,” he says. David and Helen applaud Immigration NZ’s decision to renew the RCNZ’s Agreement in Principle, making it easier for qualified contractors who belong to the RCNZ to bring in skilled drivers from overseas.

“There is a labour shortage throughout New Zealand. We try to hire New Zealanders first, but it is not always possible. “Under our AIP, RCNZ members are allowed to bring in a total of just 300 overseas agricultural machinery operators, often the young guys we bring in are more familiar with the latest technology because it arrives in Europe before here, so they serve a training role for us as well as driving.” he says.

WorkSafe NZ says while there is no single product or document that is a blueprint, farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisers, with particular emphasis where staff employment is a factor. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says a WorkSafe adviser. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. “Farmers should make sure that they are not simply going to get a folder or piles of forms someone else has done for them. That won’t make their farm any safer. What they actually need is a way of building a health and safety culture into farm activities and constructing a really effective culture of involving everyone.” There is no substitute for the

unique knowledge the farmer, family and workers have of the land, its terrain, its facilities and day-to-day operation. “What’s most important is everyone on farm thinking about the risks and managing them, so everyone stays healthy and safe. When everyone is involved, there is a positive impact on other parts of the business.” While there are good health and safety consultants out there, they are not all of the same quality and effectiveness. “Farmers need to make sure they are working with a competent and qualified professional safety adviser — that may not be the first health and safety adviser they get talking to at the local field day.” To help farmers buy the right kind of support, the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), the national umbrella organisation representing all workplace health and

safety professions, has developed a simple checklist. Ask them these five quick questions before making a decision: which professional association do you belong to – can you confirm this, what qualifications and/or certification do you have, what relevant skills and experience do you have for this job, can you give me examples of similar work you have done recently, and are you happy for us to contact your clients about your work for them? Contractors need to know what a farmer’s health and safety procedures are — so they can assess their employees’ safety on-site. “Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that exist, and mitigation that is in place.”

Finding a good fencer

Farm fencing is an ongoing expense and choosing the right contractor can mean the difference between good work and bad, secure property boundaries and stock security or wandering and missing animals.

K

AIKOHE Glass & Windscreens (2009) Ltd

• Automotive Glass & Windscreens including all farm and contracting machinery

It is good to ask yourself if your fencer has a successful track record, provides high-quality work with the best materials — will they stand behind their workmanship, and how long has this company been in business? Common sense questions at the outset will have a bearing on the job being successful. These are all valid and important questions not just for the wider farming operation, but also closer to home. Increasingly, farming residences are graced with a swimming pool, and strict health and safety codes apply. Do not always rely on advertising, but ask around the community — firstly because these are people with first-hand experience. A fencing contractor that has a lot of word-of-mouth advertising is 110 per cent better than one with

a $1,200 ad in the Yellow Pages. You want to find out how long a company or contractor has been around, if there is a history of complaints and if they are active in the community. It can help you form a more accurate picture of the contractor’s business dealings and how the company has handled complaint resolution. When you find a contractor that you are comfortable with, ask to see their portfolio. Portfolios are a source of pride to reputable businesses, the contractor should be more than willing to show you his examples of work along with giving you the addresses of a few places with jobs similar to yours. If the contractor is not forthcoming, look harder. Almost all reputable businesses have a web presence now. Get the

contractor’s web address if they have one so you can review the site. Often times, they have placed additional tools on the site along with their portfolios and references. The Fencing Contractors Association is also a good place to source local contractors.

Apprenticeship Programme celebrates worth of dairy products in the year ending June 2016. The top five markets for New Zealand dairy exports are China, United States, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Japan. New Zealand’s top four dairy export products are whole milk powder — 37 per cent, cheese 12 per cent, skim milk powder 10 per cent and butter nine per cent. “In dairy farming, a good employment workplace will have rosters, modern payroll systems, competitive wages, good houses available to rent — unlike in the city — positive, encouraging employers and lots more. “In New Zealand we have a strong economy in rural and city, so let’s make sure dairy farming as a career is well regarded and attractive so we can get more young Kiwis working outside on our farms with no Auckland traffic issues, and the only peak hour traffic they experience is taking the herd to the cowshed.”

The Federated Farmers Apprenticeship Dairy Programme celebrated its first anniversary on October 2. The pilot programme supported by MBIE, Primary ITO and Feds, was launched last year with the intention of finding more Kiwis keen to work in the dairy industry on-farm, and keen to upskill into a farming career. “After almost a year Feds is proud to say we have had 193 employer expressions of interest, and 98 completed farm charters, enabling employers to enter the programme along with 180 eligible apprentice expressions of interest and 62 apprentices in the programme,” says Federated Farmers dairy chair, Chris Lewis. “Dairy provides jobs and incomes for more than 40,000 workers, not to mention the hundreds of small communities around New Zealand, which rely on downstream income from dairy farming.” The dairy sector contributes $7.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP and plays a crucial role in supporting regional economic development, however, unfortunately, the labour market hasn’t kept pace with the growth of the dairy market. New Zealand accounts for three per cent of the total world production and exports about 95 per cent of our dairy production and exported NZ$12.4 billion

DAIRY FOCUS ON EFFLUENT

Avoiding effluent pond odours There are some sensible strategies to avoid having to deal with an odorous dairy effluent pond and DairyNZ suggest before deciding on the final site and installing a new pond, consider the distance to your neighbours, the prevailing wind direction and topography to avoid conflict.

Many district and regional councils will have minimum distance requirements for placements near boundaries, but you should also take care to note the direction of the prevailing wind and what will be ‘downwind’ of your pond or facility, including where your neighbouring houses are. On existing farms, with close neighbours, it may be necessary to research other strategies to minimise smells, and where the siting and design cannot be changed because of existing ponds, other options can be used to avoid odour emissions such as planting trees between neighbours and the pond. Shelterbelts can absorb odorous compounds and create turbulence that disperses odour upward, particularly under stable night-time conditions improving odour dispersion. It is good to select several different trees and shrubs to help prevent the total loss of your shelterbelt if insect pests or tree disease occurs. Select species with a high leaf surface roughness — plants with leaf hairs, leaf veins, and small leaf size, complex leaf shapes and large leaf areas with a medium to rapid growth rate.

When ponds are being desludged — the process mixes the sludge layer at the bottom of the pond and can create an odour. When the sludge is removed, the gases are brought to the surface and released into the air. It is important to regularly monitor the sludge layer and desludge the pond — because if left to build up for too long, the pond itself can turn smelly very quickly and if the temperature and pH conditions align, the effluent can turn into a black odorous liquor overnight. The increasing use of feed pads, stand-off pads, covered housing and more supplementary feeds being used, effluent has a much higher solid content. For intensive operations, it is strongly recommended to install solid separation and manage the solid and liquid components separately. When installing an effluent storage pond, it is highly recommended a stirring or mixing system be included as agitation increases dissolved oxygen, reducing odours and encouraging oxygen transfer through algae and direct

transfer mechanisms. Also increasing the exposure of the pond to wind will help induce oxygen transfer into the pond and there are also a number of systems that use wind turbines to compress air, which is then released into the pond through a diffuser. The diffuser can be set at any height in the pond or any location. These devices have no moving parts in the pond, which allows for easier maintenance.

Animal welfare stronger

BULK SILO FILL OR BY THE BAG

Regulations to strengthen the nation’s animal welfare system came into effect on Monday, October 1 and farmers need to ensure they are aware of the new regulations, which cover onfarm practices and transporting livestock. “Two-thirds of us have pets, and we love them. Further, New Zealand’s economy relies on our social licence to produce the finest food and fibre — and it can take one case of poor animal welfare to harm this,” said Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor. “These regulations have been developed over the past three years, in consultation with industry and advocacy groups, and target lower-end offending. While most people care for their animals and are already doing it right, the regulations make it easier to take action against animal mistreatment and target specific behaviours that need to change. “Animal Welfare Inspectors from MPI and SPCA can now issue fines for certain actions, such as allowing dogs in cars to get heat stressed, or failing to provide tethered goats with access to water and shelter. Some of the regulations are infringement offences, with a set fine, while others are prosecutable offences, which could result in a larger fine and criminal conviction.” Farmers and lifestyle block owners need to ensure they, and their staff, are up to date with the rules and regulation changes concerning the welfare of animals in their care to avoid prosecution. “Most of the regulations reflect existing farm practices but have a few new requirements. Many of the transport-related regulations apply to farmers selecting lame, sick or injured stock, so farmers should check they are doing it right or face a $500 fine,” said Mr O’Connor. “Farmers and transporters can download the ‘Fit for Transport’ app or go to the MPI website where an interactive tool brings together all regulations,

Increase in DNA parentage testing

Farmer-owned co-operative LIC has seen an increase in demand for its DNA parentage testing service as livestock farmers place increasing emphasis on cow quality over cow quantity. This spring, upwards of 250,000 calves from around the country will have their parentage confirmed by LIC’s DNA parentage service, which operates from its laboratory in Hamilton. The co-operative has had on average one new herd a day sign up to its DNA parentage service. LIC’s general manager of NZ markets, Malcolm Ellis, says the increased demand reflects the industry’s new reality of ‘peak cow’. “Our industry is changing rapidly. Cow population in New Zealand has remained static in recent years, so farmers are increasingly aware that if they can’t

generate income by milking more cows, they need to be milking better cows.” The opportunity to utilise DNA parentage testing within the dairy industry enables farmers to identify the best calves to keep as herd replacements. “With the cost of breeding a replacement sitting at around $1,600 per animal, it is important that farmers bring in the new season’s calves with confidence. Confidence in parentage is a key component to taking a farm’s herd improvement plan to the next level.” One of the biggest challenges for farmers during calving season is the

time needed to monitor and accurately record calving details consistently for a sustained period of time. It is common for one in four calves to be mismothered. Confirming a calf’s parentage is a simple task for farmers, but a technical process behind the scenes. “To begin the process, farmers take a tissue sample from a calf’s ear and then send the sample to LIC’s diagnostics lab where the DNA is extracted and analysed.

“At the end of the process, the samples from each animal are microscopic, they are smaller than the head of a pin, but that’s got every bit of information we need to determine the parentage.” The parentage testing can also be combined with other tests, such as a gene test, which identifies what cows produce A2/A2 milk and a test that detects the BVD virus in individual animals.

Taking it to a higher level by Andy Bryenton

The competition in the crossover and micro SUV section of the market is nothing short of intense, but elevate yourself into the upper echelons of size and luxury, and there are less of a bewildering array of options. Putting aside hyper-luxury name tags like Bentley and Lamborghini, both of whom now cater to the sports utility trend, a large, comfortable family orientated machine with plenty of space and four-wheel drive might seem to still mean going European. Certainly, upscale Japanese marque Lexus has their LX on offer, but there’s also something available for half the price, which challenges you to find the need for spending that extra large sum of cash. It’s Mazda’s top of the range Takami CX-9, and it not only looks different from the bulk of the SUV crop, it’s also got a few neat tricks and design flourishes up its sleeve. Take for example the interior, with the obligatory seven seats to accommodate a large family or undertake the school run. The first two rows come with built-in heating, and the whole cabin space is accented with nappa leather, rosewood and brushed aluminium. Yet everything still folds away when it’s time to move heavy cargo. It’s the same story with the engine — there’s no massive V8 under the hood or even a turbo diesel. Instead, Mazda has deployed their extremely efficient, fuel-saving Skyactiv technology to coax 227hp and 430Nm of torque from a 2.5 litre four-cylinder. The use of light construction materials — we have no doubt that Mazda has learned a lot about lightweight

construction from years of tuning MX5s — means that this engine is easily up to the challenge of powering a sevenseater of this size. The six-speed transmission comes with the option for manual control, but

letting it do its thing in concert with Mazda’s i-Activ four-wheel drive system is simply easier and another weight off your mind. The word ‘Takami’ means ‘an elevated place’ in Japanese, with the added

connotation of that elevated place being one of nobility as well as of vantage. It’s a clever, double-edged meaning for a clever, multi-role machine — one which provides comfort and luxury in balance with practicality.

It was christened the LT125, and it started a revolution. Today, after 35 years, Suzuki still manufacture some of the hardiest quads in the business, with the hardearned name ‘king quad’ blazoned on the side. From the bulletproof and largely original layout of the LT-F300F through to the top-of-the-tree LT-A750XP, all share a common heritage and have been

developed over those three decades using the same process which gave rise to the ‘granddaddy’, the original LT125. Suzuki listens to their customers, and make improvements to suit. That’s why, while the LT-A750XP — with its big bore, single overhead cam 722cc engine and power steering — seems a far cry from the simple original, it’s still designed primarily for farm work. It’s been designed to be easy to maintain, with a single cylinder liquid cooled engine placed low in the frame for stability. Designed with plenty of low-down torque, and despite adopting the latest CVT transmission, it still offers high and low ratios and engine braking for safety

and security when the going gets rough. Electronic fuel injection has increased both power and fuel economy, while power steering has made it easier to handle and more comfortable to command during those long days of work. Underneath it all — and underpinning the entire Suzuki quad family — is the sense that these machines were not made for racing, recreation or style. From day one, all the way back in the 1980s, these quads have been tuned up for the Kiwi farm. It’s a singular purpose — but then again, farming here is like nowhere else on earth, and it pays to have the right tool for the job.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

Time for that prostate check! Blue September has just finished — but the Prostate Cancer Foundation is still getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer. Research shows that our rural men in New Zealand are not good at getting checked. That needs to change. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, diagnosing the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That was the central message this year’s Blue September. Don’t wait for symptoms. A recent survey has shown that 61% of men diagnosed had no symptoms, so getting a routine check is very important. This year Farmlands joined the fight against prostate cancer as Blue September sponsors, and along with AGPAC supplying blue silage wrap, want to make sure our rural men take notice and go and get checked. Up and down the country people organised Blue Dos. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts all got in on the act. You can check out the website for some of the many events that were held up and down the country to support Blue September and get ideas for your own Blue Do in the future. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue BBQ

or a blueberry bake-off? Alternatively, organise a Blue Friday as many workplaces like to do. It gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food, and focusses on awareness of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the number one cancer in Kiwi men, and more than 600 die from it every year. It doesn’t need to be that way. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along.
