A new design, as a result of two years consultation with DOC! A better, more effective, light weight and easy-to-use trap that anyone can use!

After 30 years in dairying Northland farmer Murray Jamieson believes he has the skills and experience to change the industry. Mr Jamieson from Okaihau is standing for one of five positions on the board of Dairy NZ. Born in Morrinsville, he was brought up in Te Awamutu before leaving school at the age of 15. He then went to work on the Otorohanga farm of David Hughes. Becoming self employed at 20 he bought his first farm at 27. “I’ve got three young children and I want them to have the same chances in life that I did.” Mr Jamieson is best known in mid-Northland for taking over the management of the Northland College farm and transforming it from a lossmaker to a thriving farm that is training 37 teenagers and giving skills for their future careers. He says he will bring the same energy and enthusiasm to the Dairy NZ board table. “I want to see some young directors involved in the dairy industry. It’s time for a positive change and we need fresh minds in the dairy industry.” He says Dairy NZ does lots of good work, and has developed good relationships with farmers, universities and crown research institutes.

Northland farmer Murray Jamieson who is a candidate for the Dairy NZ board

But few people outside the industry know what it does. “Dairy NZ has to lift its profile. It is a good organisation that has the industry’s best interests at heart. It does good work in schools. But it needs a fresh new look.” Mr Jamieson says Dairy NZ’s lack of visibility is especially pronounced in cities. ”I think we need to focus on the urban-rural divide. We get lots of good press in rural papers. But we need more stories in urban publications.” The board of Dairy NZ has five directors elected by farmers. The board appoints three more directors.

by Joanne Speechly

A new Fonterra initiative aims to forge closer links between the dairy cooperative and its 11,000 farmer suppliers. Farm Source combines service, support, rewards, digital technology and financial options for farmers, together with local hubs to support the major dairying regions. Chairman John Wilson said it’s about taking its relationship with farmers to a new level. “We have been talking to our farmers about what we can do to further support them and their businesses, and we challenged ourselves to come up with ways we could get in behind them. Cooperatives have always been about unity and collective strength and we have a lot of both.” CEO Theo Spierings said Farm Source is much stronger than the sum of its parts. “Ultimately, we see Farm Source as setting the benchmark when it comes to supporting farmers and providing exclusive benefits beyond the Milk Price. It’s about working together to grow and succeed and reach our ambition of global relevance.” Launched in Methven last week, the Farm Source package includes: • Seventy-one Farm Source hubs.

• Farm Store rewards to bring down the cost of farm supplies and services. • Farm Store “dollars” to return farmers a share of profits. • In-store and online farm supplies. • Farm Source digital for farmers to manage their business with the cooperative. • Financial tools for managing shares, capital and business. Farmers of New Zealand operations director Bill Guest said Farm Source is a lot bigger than a rebrand of Farm Source Stores director Jason Minkhorst Fonterra’s existing network (left) and Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings (right) of RD1 stores. unveil the new Farm Source sign in Methven “This is about shareholder pride and the new clean offers some significant financial tools colours emphasise the overall Fonterra to help them do business better, using brand, which is seriously lacking in the provincial football team colours to the current stores. “Farm Source is a identify each region is a particularly rewards programme for farmers and it clever idea.”

he Nathan family have taken a hobby and turned it into a lifestyle, and now in its fifth year, Pouto Horse Sports is gaining momentum. “In the beginning it revolved around the kids — it was their practice for the rodeo circuit but now it has a life of its own, says Kath Nathan. Kath and husband Steve have a dry stock unit on land bordering Lake Kahuparere. The farm has been in the Nathan family for generations and it is here that Steve built the practice arena that became the catalyst for Pouto Horse Sports.

big part of your business

Steve, an accomplished rider who represented Northland in the Northland Colts Polocrosse team at the age of 15, also runs a horse trekking business. Initially, he believed that given their remote location, the business would give his two youngest children, Morgana and Patariki, both an interest and a practical lesson in commerce. “He liked the whole idea of creating things for his kids to do at home so they don’t have to go anywhere, says Kath. Morgana, now 20, is studying sport and recreation in Whangarei but still competes and will be heavily involved with her family’s annual horse sports event. She credits Blue, her ‘bush’ horse, as one of the reasons for her continued success.

IT TAKES TWO: TEAM ROPING AT POUTO LAST YEAR

Patariki is 17 and works in forestry. A rookie, he prefers to compete in the rough stock categories but still trains horses alongside Morgana. He will also be central to this year’s horse sports preparations. Donny, his partner Sophie, son Melakai and Morgana all live in Ruakaka. Kath says Donny is a skilled rider in his own right “but of quads and motor bikes, not horses, its his strength that keeps him in the saddle”. “We had a really great turnout in 2013, so we’re hoping for more of the same this year. The weekend has a great family atmosphere, people are friendly and helpful, and if you don’t know someone, you at least know of them. “The local community is very supportive too — if they’re not at the arena, it means they’re probably not in Pouto. “We put on meals for competitors and volunteers and there is camping available. People usually start arriving Friday afternoon, as registration is 8.30am Saturday. “Saturday is action-packed and we have a sound system, so there is plenty

The trek is also a fundraiser for Waikaretu Marae. “Te Kopuru Fire Brigade are our first response team but luckily we haven’t had to use them for anymore than a band-aid so far. However, they’re really good value and so supportive.” Competitors can expect to be rewarded generously, thanks to the continued sponsorship of: Tropex Exports Ltd. “Rodeo is expensive, so the jackpots provide a good incentive and it’s winnertakes-all.” As well as all the usual roping, undressing, bucking and wrestling, there is also the Indian Game, where contestants ride bare back, and Buzkashi — a traditional Central Asian team sport. “Rodeo is what we do. It’s exciting, the kids love it, and Steve loves the adrenaline. There is so much skill required, for both the horse and rider. “Initially, Pouto Horse Sports was a one-off but we received so much positive feedback that we kept going. It’s now

The Waimate North Showgrounds fill up every November when the Bay of Islands P & I show is held

Sharon Cook first came to show riding her horse when she was five. She was following a family tradition. “My dad was associated with the show as long as he can remember and my grandfather before him. I’ve competed most of my life. The show is a part of our life. It’s very ingrained in all of us.” But not only is Mrs Cook a competitor. She is the show’s vice-president and is responsible for finding judges, stewards and volunteers for the equestrian event. She marks out the arena and sets up the course. Mrs Cook remembers the days when the show had a Ferris wheel, dodgems and a merry-go-round. Although they haven’t been there for years, Mrs Cook says the trade sites have expanded and crowds have continued to rise. As secretary-treasurer, Anne Clarke has the job of organising each show. Ms Clarke says the association has secured the show’s future by buying the entire showgrounds site, except for the parking area which it leases from a local farmer. The site backs onto the historic Waimate North mission house. She says the show attracts exhibitors from all over New Zealand and between 9,000 and 10,000 people come through the gate. “It’s huge and it’s so popular. It’s the first show of the season and it’s the first day out for many families.” Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

COME ALIVE

by Joanne Speechly

A

For more than 100 years, school calf clubs have been an institution in New Zealand and this month, thousands of rural children from throughout the country will take part in this annual event.

ll the brushing, leading, feeding and loving that goes into preparing a young animal for the big day, will teach children some very important life lessons and that is why Daff Adams is a keen advocate for the time-honoured tradition. The mother of two has even gone one step further and found a way to make calf club come alive for children who come from non-farming families.

In 2010, Daff’s children Hannah and Hunter were attending a small rural school in the Kaipara, when she had a ‘hair brained’ idea. “My husband was working on a property neighbouring Arapohue School and my kids were preparing calves for show day. “I started thinking about how many other kids might be interested in getting involved and that was the starting drive.

eco drain

We lived in a rural setting but many of the kids didn’t actually live on farms and I wanted those kids to have the opportunity to work with animals and experience the benefits that come with it. “In that first year, five kids come on board, including my two. We had fantastic facilities where we lived — a two-stable horse shed with a concrete floor, a water supply and shelter. The farm owners, Lynne and Clive McDermott, were also very supportive — it was perfect. “We selected the calves, my husband brought home the milk, and the kids and

I got together twice a week for six weeks to groom and lead the calves. “Friends and locals were kind enough to offer second hand brushes, covers and leads. “For that first one, I had to read up on what the judges would expect, then the following year, we got a bit bigger and by 2012, we had 11 kids onboard.” The big drive for Daff has always been about giving non-farming children the opportunity to participate in something special, so when she and her family moved to Tangiteroria, Kirikopuni Calf Club was born.

The town of Dargaville, on Northland’s west coast offers ample sunshine, forest, lakes, beaches,

Kirikopuni kids: Teina Watt with Coco, Hannah Adams with Cutie Pie, Ryleigh Hutchinson with Puppy, Jade Hutchinson with Rosie and Arnica Poutai with Fernado. Front row: Kahu Morehu with Snowy, Hunter Adams with Tiggy, Tayla Adams with Cuddles and Saryah Arnott with Mini.

“It’s the same concept — kids from non-farming families get to take an animal to Ag Day and then we ‘boomerang’ the calves back to the farmers afterwards. We have 11 acres at Tangiteroria and there are a lot of other lifestyle block owners, which means that people don’t always have the necessary knowledge, facilities or animals that calf club requires. “I think the parents are really quite appreciative of what we do and the generosity shown by the grandmothers has been amazing. One example is Faye McMillan, a technology teacher, who made hooded, lined vests for all my kids, with their names stitched on. Another grandmother Reggie Halbert and VIP Fert donated $200 to the club

so we could buy two new brushes, five new covers and five new leads. That was big for us, because we’ve always made do with second-hand gear.” Five children, including Hannah, are preparing calves at Kirikopuni Calf Club this year and three, including Hunter, are

“At the end of the day, calf club is about the kids” preparing lambs and Daff is the first to admit that there are challenges. “These are kids who haven’t worked with animals before and I myself went from knowing nothing about calf club a few years ago to doing it all but people

in the community are just so giving of knowledge, experience and time. “At the end of the day, calf club is about the kids. They’re going there to do their best and to do themselves proud. They have taken an animal that’s essentially a baby and made it into a pet, which will stand there quietly, loving being brushed, and be led around a ring in front of a lot of people. These calves, by the time they leave and go back in the herd, are pretty much bomb proof! “Calf clubs have been an integral part of our rural life for 120 years and I just can’t bear the thought of them dying. They teach children so much about commitment, compassion, empathy and a different way of communicating. They also learn behavioural skills and how to act around animals, which is an opportunity that non-farming children would otherwise miss out on.”

ADVERTORIAL

New rules, new opportunities by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Like the Berlin Wall, the chemical wall is crumbling. The move away from the chemical age has begun as new rules, regulations and compliance kicks in, bringing us all into line with the new consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. Fortunately, Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers designed to remineralise the soil and increase soil biota; ultimately bringing health and vitality back to the soil for better quality production. Recently Rodale Institute launched a global campaign to generate public awareness of the soil’s ability to reverse climate change by increasing the health of the soil through regenerative agriculture. The campaign is calling for the restructure of our global food system with the goal of reversing climate change through photosynthesis and biology. The campaign was penned by Rodal Institute an independent, non-profit agricultural research station recognised as the birthplace of organics in the USA (rodaleinstitute.org/reversing-climate-

change). Rodale’s white paper states “we would sequester more than 100 percent of current annual CO2 emissions with a switch to widely available and inexpensive organic management practices which we term regenerative organic agriculture”. Mark Smallwood, executive director of Rodale Institute said that founder J.I Rodale had a vision so ambitious that many people wrote him off at the time. Almost 75 years later the organic movement is exploding with growth and fierce determination and the stakes are a lot higher in 2014. Rodale saw that agriculture was heading in a dangerous direction through the widespread adoption of synthetic chemicals and the industrialisation of farming. He attempted to prevent that transition. We no longer have the luxury of prevention.

Agrissentials CEO, John Morris is excited about the future possibilities away from chemical fertiliser dependancy.

We are in the dire situation of needing a cure, a reversal. The massive awakening itself is the catalyst to the cure, the future is underfoot. It’s all about the health of the soil. Agrissentials have been a part of this new farming revolution for the past twenty years; helping farmers nationwide convert to a natural system whilst optimising production and continuing to fight the good fight by looking after the soil. Topsoil is, most probably, the most valuable resource on our planet as all life is dependent upon it for survival. Agrissentials’ focus is bringing life and minerals to the soil with our multi-mineral, microbial rich, live, living fertilisers. With good levels of microbes in your soil you will have good levels of worms, beautiful, marvellous worms. Farmers using our fertilisers have abundant worm life, between the worms and the micro-organisms you have a recycling team that will keep increasing topsoil and improving the farm. Farmers tell us that within 14 to 20 days of the herd leaving the paddock all cow pats are recycled back into topsoil, increasing soil water retention quality, enhancement of mineral potency through worm castings improving phosphate levels by 700%, potassium by 1100%, nitrogen by 500%, increasing soil drainage capacity and mineral retention making the Regional Councils happy with the soil and the minerals holding their ground and looking after the environment. The time to move is now and the change is not only painless but the benefits derived from working with nature are abundant. PLUS Agrissentials have a fantastic October giveaway: every tonne of Rok Solid, 200 L of Oceans 100, or 2 x tonnes of Roketlime purchased this month goes in the draw to win a year’s worth of petrol! For more information contact your friendly representative Mike Jujnovich on 021 669 059 or call 0800 THE KEY, that’s 0800 843 539, today for a FREE INFO PACK.

RURAL WHEELS

Call in the specialists by Andy Bryenton

Innovations in tractor technology for crop and livestock farmers have seen machines destined for a life on the open paddocks evolve over the years. The air conditioned, GPS guided and incredibly powerful machines which now ply the pasture in rural areas worldwide bear only a passing resemblance to the primitive tractors of yesteryear. What about those specialised agricultural industries in which a barnsized 400HP monster is not the right tool for the job? New Holland have been hard at work designing some new tech for just such an application, revealing their new T4 range of FNV tractors earlier this year. The acronym is the key, because that FNV designation means that these T4s are designed for orchards, vineyards and narrow spaces where a big openfield tractor can’t go. Orchardists and winemakers need tractors, too,and their sector of the primary industry is a growing one — all the more reason that New Holland’s management are excited about the possibilities for the T4 in New Zealand. But it’s the high power output from a diminutive machine which really defines the T4 range — allowing for

more versatile operations among the trees and vines. All three specialist variants — narrow, orchard and vineyard spec — boast a 4.5 litre turbocharged and intercooled Nef engine that is fully compliant with pure biodiesel. Maximum power of 106hp is achieved at 2,300 rpm, and a 31% torque rise means the T4060 is able to tackle the most demanding tasks, such as power harrowing, in the most challenging of environments. Special attention has also been paid to safety for tasks such as pruning and mowing on the steep gradients which often accompany viticulture and orchard operations. New Holland claim that they have been leading the game when it comes to specialist tractors for over six decades, and the knowledge gained from this pursuit has all funnelled down into the T4 range, making these new, versatile tractors just the ticket for those ‘hard to reach places’ where sheer bulk and horsepower must give way to a little more finesse.

Green machine for all seasons

by Andy Bryenton

The story of John Deere tractors is one of humble beginnings and big results. Founded in the 1830s by a town blacksmith, who listened to the needs of local farmers and developed better tools in his forge, John Deere got their start manufacturing steel plows to turn the midwestern American soil from prairie into fertile croplands. Nowadays, of course, the big green and yellow machines carrying the smith’s name are a symphony of hydraulics and diesel power, a fixture of worldwide agriculture. At the cutting edge, though, John Deere continue to innovate. And not just upward into the stratosphere of horsepower, either. Recognising the need for a mid-weight, all-purpose tractor, especially one for the small block farmer or for use as a second utility machine, John Deere have released the 5E series, a mighty little tractor which punches above its weight. Part of this winning formula is the PowerTech M series engine, the 4.5 litre turbo-diesel heart of the 5E. Willing and able, this efficient little mill pumps out over 300 newton metres of torque. Cutting back on the profusion of levers and pedals seen in monster-sized tractors makes the 5E a good proposition for farmers who want to simply jump in and work.

Because hard work is just what this little dynamo does best. A no-nonsense approach to design has made the 5E series very versatile, and able to be kitted out to a variety of specifications to meet the needs of varied agricultural tasks. A popular addition here in New Zealand is the H240 loader, which turns the 5E into an adept handler of silage, just right for dairy operations at this time of year.

Double Take

John Deere are no strangers to designing and building immense farming machines, from mighty combine harvesters to tractors which dwarf the diminutive 5E series. But, as the old adage says, you can get more jobs done with a pocketknife than with a claymore. As a first tractor for small blocks, or as a second utility machine to back up a larger fleet of tractors, the 5E shines through.

Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.

Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that come already fitted to your vehicle. These are made to the vehicle manufacturer’s price and may result in a compromise on the tyre performance and life. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling. Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it, choose Mickey Thompson Tires.

When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction. If you get punctures, then Mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance.

Suzuki’s king reigns on One of the easiest mistakes to make when designing a new ATV quad is to scrap components and features which made people like the original model in the first place. Sophistication may seem like a fine thing in a brochure, but in the rough and tumble world of farming there’s something to be said for the tried and true approach. Take the no-nonsense old Land Rover Defender for example. The ‘new money’ in rural England might get about in Porsche Cayenne turbos, but when the Lord of the Manor wants to shoot game, he gets out the knobbly-tyred old series 2. Many a fancy machine has been dragged out of the mud here, too, by something more rough around the edges. All of this analogy is leading up to a compliment for the hard-working little 300cc King Quad. You see, it hasn’t been overhauled in a few years now, and the Suzuki R and D boys have a reason for that. Or two. One is the fact that the ruggedly competent 2004 model has been a steady seller with farmers, who tend to vote with their wallets on what is durable and gets the job done. The second is that, in terms of a sweet balance between fuel economy, lightness and agility the King

Quad 300 hits the nail on the head for Kiwi farming conditions. The willing little 280cc mill with it’s single Mikuni carb is not in the domain of rocket science, but it has proven awfully hard to kill. Likewise, the transmission’s addition of a super-low range for bags of pulling power has become a farm favourite. A big hearty reserve of midlow-range torque in general is just what cattle farmers need to navigate muddy fields, and this is what the little Suzuki delivers, making chores like shifting the herd that little bit easier. The King Quad made it’s debut in the early 1990s, and very little has been changed in terms of the basic platform. Indeed, a radical redesign is actively resisted by Suzuki, who have learned the big lesson of the VW Beetle. The original was built from the 1940s up until very recently. It was the national taxicab of Mexico and Brazil, survived in the Amazon and the Sahara — but the new Beetle already looks a bit last century. Suzuki hope that the King Quad — like the DR200 Trojan 2-wheeler — remains evergreen in Kiwi pastures.

RURAL CONTRACTING Professional help for specialist jobs

Ca$h for scrap metal!

Running an efficient farm is often a matter of organising and orchestrating hundreds of vital tasks — and not all of them are directly involved with crops and livestock. Around the yard, the cowshed and even the homestead, there are jobs which require attention to make the season flow smoothly and, just like the core business of producing bumper harvests and maintaining a healthy herd or flock, it’s often best to call in the professionals for these tasks as well. It just makes sense, if only because, while the Kiwi farmer is a renowned ‘jack of all trades’, the days of being able to sort any job on the fly with number 8 wire and baling twine are swiftly receding into history. Tackling wireless networking, for example, is a mission best farmed out to someone with very specialised skills. Thankfully farmers in Northland have a skilled pool of talent to draw upon when it comes time to tackle these chores — specialists with the expertise and the tools to handle everything from trimming shelter belts through to

AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING Big changes in ground spreading over the years Peter McQuinn knows ground spreading. His history in the business dates back from 1947 when his father, then a contractor at Pipiwai, established McQuinn’s Ground Spreading. It was a time when one-size-fits-all solutions were common place and no one worried about the effects of excess nutrients and nitrogen runoff. Even when Peter took over the business from his father in the mid80’s, controls on the application of fertilisers and nutrients on soil were pretty minimal. New Zealand was, after all, the country that revolutionised aerial topdressing and a more-is-better approach dominated farmers’ thinking. But in the four decades since, knowledge

in the field of soil science has grown enormously. Environmental regulation through the Resource Management Act is now a big issue. And farmers are getting more canny, recognising what they put on or in their soil is often more important than the quantity. Peter McQuinn has seen all these changes. “There are lots of different mixes,” he says. “Today I’m doing four orchards and there is a different mix for each.” He says most farmers get their soils tested and use the results to determine the best mix for their farm. “There are lots of brews for different land. I can get the best advice for farmers.” Those mixes have

changed over time. In the 1970s and 1980s lots of nutrients were used, especially minerals. But minerals were expensive, and use declined as farmers cut back. But in recent years, with a run of high international commodity, prices, minerals have made a comeback. Fonterra’s announcement last month of a significantly lower milk fat payout

represents a major blow to the country’s rural communities. Mr McQuinn expects life to be tougher as farmers retrench and reduce the amount they reinvest in their land. However, Mr McQuinn says an increasing number of his clients are lifestyle block owners seeking greater productivity from their smallholdings.

AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING Karl’s laser makes drainage easy

Ruawai

Drains may appear to be mundane and boring. But if you make your living from the land, getting the best drainage is critical.

Entrenched - laser drainage is about far more than just digging ditches and laying pipes

Most farmers realise that nature sometimes needs a helping hand if land is to be turned into productive pasture. That’s where Karl Driver from Driver Laser Drainage comes in. He’s a farm drainage contractor based in Dargaville. “I’ve been doing the same thing for 20 years,” says Karl. “I’ve owned the business for seven.” He helps farmers Northland-wide from Helensville north. Karl says his clients range wider than just dairy and

beef farmers. “I help kiwi fruit farmers and horticulturists with their orchards.” Drainage is about more than digging ditches. There are also ponds and dams, while Driver Laser Drainage also does trenching for telecommunications and other services. Technology has changed how the work is done. The era of picks and shovels disappeared many years ago to be replaced by trenchers and excavators. Karl has half-a-dozen machines

including an 11-tonne digger, trucks, tractors and his chain trenchers which equipped with laser control carry out the subsurface drainage. The lasers are a valuable and important piece of equipment to ensure the drainage coil is installed correctly. “The laser is used to control the grade of a trench and is very accurate. This is a precision tool and there are not too many of them around. They definitely make the job a lot easier and a good result is guaranteed.” Karl says his team adopt a highly professional approach to all projects with the highest standards of workmanship.

AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING Vital support for agriculture

by Andy Bryenton

Farming has always been a job which requires a wide range of skills — from a knowledge of soil chemistry through to the ability to manage accounts and a whole wealth of knowledge in between. Today, with intensive agricultural practices introducing more machinery and technology to the primary sector, this fact is truer than ever. It has become increasingly important to have the support of a team of specialists who can keep the modern farm working, season after season. That is the stated role of Dargaville’s Kaipara Agri Centre — making sure

that their farming customers have the machinery and equipment to reliably get the job done. In order to make sure that their clients spend more time in the field and less time under the hood, Graeme Lawrence and his team bring to bear over thirty years of experience, supplying and fitting vital parts and sourcing the right tools for a range of agricultural jobs.

The team at Kaipara Agri Centre are on call to keep local farmers out in the field this spring

As well as undertaking repairs to ensure that tractors, harrows, harvesting equipment and more Kaipara wide are ready to fulfill their tasks, Graeme and his chief mechanic John Withey carry a large stock of consumables — v-belts, lubricants, bearings and batteries, to name just a few. The demands of nature (such as recent floods, or last year’s droughts) put immense pressure on machines in the rural sector, and their expertise is often called upon to effect swift repairs on all manner of machines, from loaders to kumara harvesters, keeping their role varied, and to some extent unpredictable. A dedicated hydraulic repair department is also part of Kaipara Agri Centre’s service, as most modern farm equipment is reliant to some degree on hydraulic power.

Graeme, John, and their indispensable administration manager Leanne Stewart have worked hard to build a trusted reputation for their business, and know that they are trusted to solve problems quickly, keeping downtime to a minimum. No matter whether they are called on for nuts and bolts, or to source brand new machinery for an expansion of farming operations, they are confident in their abilities to find the right solution. It’s no easy task, but all three feel that the benefits of a lifestyle in the sunny north, away from the pressures of city life make what they do unique. It’s also rewarding to know that so many productive, busy farms are kept that way by their efforts, their knowledge and their dedication. i based, Whangare ed and operated n locally ow M THE

AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING Good practice boosts fertiliser response Livestock management and good old weather watching will ensure farmers get the best dry matter response and achieve the best in animal performance results from their fertiliser application, says science strategy manager at Ballance Agri-Nutrients Warwick Catto. “While fer tiliser programmes, and the nutrients that are applied, vary throughout the year, it is worth considering the influence of increased livestock feed demand and their metabolic stresses in spring.” “During calving and lambing we advise farmers to adhere to best agricultural practice when applying fertiliser. “During spring, livestock maternal instinct means that rather than normally avoiding pasture with fertiliser residue, they may consume this pasture which puts these animals at risk, particularly from fluorosis. “It is good common sense to either spell stock from recently fertilised pasture or fertilise just before rainfall,” he said. “Spelling after nitrogen and phosphate fertiliser has been applied ensures the plants can produce

the biggest response, and that less nutrient is transferred to dung or urine patches.” The following five-point plan will ensure farmers get the best grass growth and animal performance following fertiliser application: • Rotate livestock to fit with fertiliser application • Spell nitrogen fertilised pasture for seven to 14 days or until no residues are present • Spell phosphate fertilised pasture for 21 days or until 25ml of rainfall has occurred, or until no residues are present • Apply dustier fertilisers late in the morning, once dew has dried off the grass, to avoid fertiliser sticking to the plant leaf • Watch the weather and apply fertiliser just before irrigation or light rainfall. Mr Catto said now was the right time to soil and herbage test and develop a targeted fertiliser programme, including assessing the need for trace elements such as selenium, cobalt and copper.

AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING Grass silage and profit

From the second that we cut grass it starts to lose both quantity and quality, and, as a farm’s annual profitability is included in the quality of the silage produced, it is crucial to understand the control points that influence the milk potential of the silage.

The fermentation process is controlled by the bacteria on the ensiled grass. However, farmers face the dilemma that generally undesirable bacteria replicate more rapidly than desirable leading to increased losses of dry matter, digestibility, energy and protein. These losses continue until the silage is fermented and the pH has fallen below a level where the undesirable enterobacteria can replicate. The faster the fermentation occurs, the quicker the enterobacteria are inhibited and more of the original milk potential is protected.

high levels to outcompete the recycling bacteria. Sil-All 4x4 applies 1 million colony forming units (cfu) of bacteria per gram of fresh forage to drive the fermentation either in granular or liquid applied form. Ensile the stack or bunker as rapidly as possible, ensuring good compaction of thin layers (max of 30cm deep). The shape of the stack controls the ultimate density of the stack and therefore the amount of air penetration into it, which influences dry matter and feed value losses. The stack should be built with a 3:1 ratio, that is three times as wide as it is high, in order to achieve the maximum packing density during compaction and ensiling, and to maintain that packing density over time. If packing density is lost through storage then air will penetrate into the stack or bunker and lead to significant heating and dry matter losses.

Soil Matters with Peter Burton

A near perfect start to the season A welcome dollop of warm rain has activated spring. It’s as though a switch has been flicked, perhaps not for everyone but for those areas that experienced a dry frosty August spring growth has erupted. Accelerated growth has also brought a dramatic change in farmer mood, from one of increasing nervousness to relaxed calmness. The early part of the season is underway and grazing routines and conservation plans can now be activated. There’s a quip that every year spring growth starts on September 15 at 10.45am, and as absurd as that might seem it’s simply highlighting the fact that in mid-September, for most regions, there’s a point when spring growth becomes unstoppable. It’s interesting that even the most experienced and well prepared farmers can become a little ill at ease just prior to spring growth. If in fact spring growth is as regular as long term records indicate there should

be a sense of restless anticipation, or have we begun to believe that it’s not a natural and inevitable consequence of increasing sunshine hours and warmth. Rampant spring growth can be accurately forecast by recording the soil temperature soon after sun-up each morning. As soon as a minimum temperature of 10°C is reached spring growth is underway. Pasture growth during dry frosty winters is always slower due to burning of the grass by direct sunlight magnified by the drop of water on each tip. No burning takes place when a fog or cloud follows a frost. Utilisation of pasture is high because little is tramped into the soil, and animal requirements are less due to lack of wind and increased sunlight. Pasture covers may appear to be low but brix readings indicate excellent levels of

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM

soluble sugars, verified by animals preferring pasture to hay. Frosts lift moisture from the soil and with the following direct sunlight the surface of the soil becomes noticeably drier. Lower moisture levels means less energy is required for warming; the reason early growth follows cold crisp winters. While damaged pasture has grown little above the ground, where physical soil structures are good there’s been relentless root development. And it’s this that provides the nutrient feeding system necessary for resilient growth over the next eight months. At 10°C it is also the time of greatest earthworm activity and casting on the surface should be clearly visible although much casting also takes

25

place beneath the surface. As soil temperatures increase and the growth of grasses slow clover becomes increasingly obvious. When fertiliser programmes are geared to providing ideal conditions for this resilient plant long solid stems and big leaves largely unmolested by flea and weevil can be expected as spring progresses. Not only does clover fix abundant nitrogen free of charge it is also the tucker of choice for fast growing lambs and calves as well as high performing dairy cows. As it’s more digestible, more kilograms can be consumed and containing significantly more calcium than grass increased growth and production inevitably follows. DAIRY ADVERTORIAL

In the shed with Megan Fowlie Spilt milk predicted over R22 re-gassing delays Sacrificing a vat of milk could be a strong possibility for farmers with chillers using R22 refrigerant. R22 is a particularly common refrigerant on New Zealand dairy farms and from January 2015 refrigeration wholesalers will be unable to import the gas. We know refrigerant leakage is the most common on-farm refrigeration problem and that leaks are unpredictable sometimes occurring in units and silos which are still in fairly good condition. So the implications for farmers are these: 1. With the R22 supply diminishing, farmers can no longer rely on a quick top up with refrigerant after a repair has been completed; 2. Unexpected leaks will mean an alternative gas needs to be used. (Noting that different HFC gasses cannot be mixed together, unplanned re-gassing could be a time-consuming and timecritical process), 3. For farmers still on R22 next year and thereafter an unexpected gas

leak could result in a long wait and a good chance of wasting a morning or afternoon’s takings Why all the trouble? Firstly the regassing process requires reclaiming the remaining R22 gas. Depending on the alternative refrigerant used, some systems will need the rubber seals or components replaced if they are not compatible with the new lubricates, the liquid filter drier and the oil changed, and the system evacuated and charged with the new refrigerant. Finally the unit would need to be thoroughly tested and some parameters changed. It’s recommended farmers take the upper hand by checking refrigeration units, keeping systems in good condition to minimise the chance of refrigerant leakage, and consider future proofing any system using R22 with a new gas retrofit. If systems are in poor repair it could be worthwhile replacing the chiller unit.

Environmental fertilisers maize programme by Rachel Sorley

Maize has a short growing season, so it is important to get the base minerals correct and ensure there is enough calcium, nitrogen and potassium to grow the crop. Outlined below is a basic maize programme. 1. Spraying Out It is highly recommended when using glyphosate, to mix EF ACE (liquid fulvic acid) at 2–4 litres/ha into the spray solution just prior to spraying. This helps give a better kill on hard to knock weeds such as old man docks. 2. Base Fertiliser Solid Mix As determined by the Reams Soil Test and a CEC type soil test, needs to be applied prior to last cultivation. 3. Starter Fertiliser Mix some starter fertiliser with the seed as it is direct drilled. 4. Side Dressing Conduct a Reams Soil Test when plant is approximately 20cm high, so we can accurately determine which nitrogen source

is the best to use at this time of the growing phase (ie We need to balance the nitrate-nitrogen with the ammonium nitrogen). 5. Foliar Fertiliser — optional but recommended Foliar fertilisers, such as EF Humus Builder and EF Vegetative Foliar are optional, but recommended.

Our delicate dairy economy A drop in dairy prices of 48% from February this year is now impacting on the New Zealand economy, with economists now predicting Fonterra’s $5.30 payout prediction will drop again to $4.80 if there is not a lift in product values by March of next year. The Northland regional economy, with a drop of $3.70 per kilogram of milk solids would face a disastrous shortfall of in excess of $370 million. It has been said that for every dollar a dairy farmer receives, it adds three times more value by the time it goes through the community. How the experts work that out, I don’t know, but if it is true there would be an impact in the Northland region of $1 billion. I attended a Fonterra farmer meeting held in Northland this week and the big surprise to me was the small number of suppliers who attended the meeting, in light of the decline of dairy farmer fortunes. It was a pity because in spite of all the bad news caused by the

volatility in the world markets, I believe Fonterra is doing a lot of positive things to increase its market share throughout the world, avoiding a major reliance solely on the Chinese market. Joint ventures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia are turning Fonterra, since its formation from being an $11 billion earner to a $22 billion earner, making it, I believe, the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy. Some farmers at the meeting expressed their extreme concern at Fonterra continuing to undertake huge costly development programmes overseas when dairy farmer payouts are now suffering a serious decline. Farmers expressed criticism at Fonterra

spending some $23 million in their new Farm Source development which will include the restructuring of its RD1 stores throughout New Zealand. Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey in explaining this development said that this Farm Source development would mean better buying power for Fonterra shareholders and suppliers, including greater fuel and electricity savings and discounts on purchases. He explained that the current market volatility was caused by the European and the United States’ ban on exports to Russia and this was a great concern because Russia is the European community’s biggest purchaser of dairy products. Now this European product can be diverted to other world markets, putting pressure on Fonterra’s market share. There is also currently a weak demand for dairy products from China. While we are mindful of the current concerns, we know the industry has never been without financial risk or market fluctuations. It is important that we dairy farmers support Fonterra’s farmer co-operative ownership structure and maintain the initiative and enterprise that is required to achieve the outcomes we all desire.

The viability of housing beef cattle in specially constructed barns came under scrutiny at a Beef + Lamb NZ demonstration day last month. More than 70 farmers came to Grant and Christine West’s farm near Tangiteroria to view the facility built by Mr West and to consider whether similar arrangements could be viable on their properties. Bob Thomson of Ag First who organised the event says Mr West’s barn is the first in the Northland region and has attracted lots of interest from fellow farmers. Built at a cost of $125,000, the barn can house 120 cattle, less than onequarter of the 500 currently stocked on the West’s farm. Mr Thomson says the barn was designed to reduce pugging damage to pastures, thereby making them more productive. He says removing stock from pastures releases land to provide feed for other classes — such as lactating ewes — and improves stock performance. But the jury is still out on whether that improvement is sufficient to justify the capital cost of a beef barn. “The benefits are not huge,” says Mr Thomson. “But it could be if there was normal climate.” The first winter after the beef barn was built was abnormally mild, meaning it received little use.

Tangiteroria farmer Grant West has built a barn that houses beef cattle, and to reduce pasture damage

Just recently, the July storms resulted in a large section of roof being blown off. The beef barn also has environmental benefits, as effluent produced by cattle in the barn goes into a pit. Mr West then uses the waste to fertilise maize crops, thereby saving in fertiliser costs. Mr Thomson says

if cattle effluent is left on pastures, it gets trampled into the soil, reducing its fertility. He says farmers will have to decide for themselves whether beef barns are the answer. “It’s not good for everyone. But Mr West believes it’s worth it. He wants to build a second one.”

Wool Perspective

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Wool prices steady A wonderful spell of dry weather during late August and into mid-September resulted in a large number of sheep being shorn, although in some southern areas of the South Island a number of ewes remained in full wool due to the earlier wet conditions experienced plus the onset of lambing. Generally the lambing season has been reported as very satisfactory to date across most of the country, with the exception of a few farmers in Southland having experienced the major problem of Brandenburg abortion causing havoc and distress to all concerned. The wool market has managed to hold on very well with prices remaining steady throughout the August and early September periods, with most wool growers meeting the market prices offered, particularly for crossbred wool types. Merino prices also remained very solid in New Zealand (compared to Australian sales) with passings limited mainly to a few rather optimistic grower reserves. During early September and prior to writing, full length crossbred fleece measuring between 33 and 35 micron received around 590 to 610 cents per clean kilogram, 36 to 38 micron approximately 570 to 585 cents, and 40 micron approximately 560 to 570.

Second-shear types were fetching a wide range of prices dependent on staple length, with short genuine 5 to 6 month shorn wools struggling around the mid to high 400 cents per clean kilogram range, whilst 8 to 10 month ‘early shorn’ types received better support at prices ranging from approximately 550 to 570 cents, with some sales at even higher levels. Extreme pressure from buyers struggling to fill fleece orders was placed on bulky oddments, and prices in many cases for good length bellies and/ or pieces reached levels just fractionally less than those ruling for fleece. Finer crossbred wools, measuring finer than 33 microns, drew good support from Chinese buying interests and prices for those types (once again depending on length and style) reached levels of between 650 and 675 cents per clean kilogram. Half bred and Corriedale wool types received a rather mixed response

Wool being loaded out from the PGG Wrightson wool store in Christchurch

during early September with the first auction for the month resulting in a number of lines being passed-in below grower expectation, however a number of exporters had better prices available the following week as new orders filtered in from offshore processors. Merino wool types also received mixed results depending on micron,

style and staple strength, and it was very noticeable that those wools measuring 19 micron or coarser were in good demand. Exporters showed best interest in good sized lines of well prepared fleece wools in the aforementioned micron ranges, whilst finer wools continued their struggle to receive just reward for grower input.

FISHING, HUNTING AND OUTDOORS

Time for a line in the water

Freshwater anglers are now out around Northland in the new season with the anticipation of landing a big one — that trophy fish just around the next bend. The weather over the past couple of months has been unsettled but the rivers will be slowly clearing following the winter wet. Anglers have started fishing the Kaimamaku River and other tributary streams of the Wairua River near Hikurangi and Hukerenui with reasonable catches being recorded, after fears that resident trout populations may have struggled to have survived last summer’s drought. Rainbow trout are a dominant species and a daily bag limit of two fish can be easily achieved. Brown trout are also found in the river system and tend to be a resident in the slower reaches

of the river and anglers who venture downstream of the State Highway One bridges, are likely to get glimpses of cruising brown trout. The evening is the best time to catch these fish as they surface feed on insects. With a cooler and wetter spring than usual, Northland’s lakes and reservoirs will provide plenty of opportunities for the shore angler. Cooler waters mean that trout can still be found cruising the shallow water and anglers have reported seeing trout feeding on midges along the lake edges. We recommend that fly fishermen use snail patterns, nymphs, and/or midges in these areas. Fresh catch - freshwater anglers enjoy the tranquility of back-country New Zealand

The Kai Iwi Lakes which is stocked annually with 2,300 rainbows is always a favourite amongst anglers, producing excellent quality trout for eating. Recent catches at the Whau Valley Dam have been good with specimens up to 2kg being landed. Lake Manuwai, near Kerikeri is a fishery which is annually stocked with 400–500 Rainbow Trout fingerlings. Once the trout attain legal size (300mm), they average between 0.75 and 1 kilogram. Non-motorised boat fishing is permitted at Lake Manuwai. Fishing from a boat also allows for jigging.

Anglers who prefer shore fishing can enjoy offshore angling simply by rowing or paddling to the man made islands located around the lake, which adds another dimension to this angling location. Northland has a dedicated brown trout fishery at Wilson’s Dam and is performing well with specimens being landed of a very good size. Shoreline angling is the only method allowed at either the dam wall or with access off Prescott Road. Northland Fish and Game is reminding anglers with families to buy a family licence and get the whole family involved in a fun, challenging activity.

It pays to do your homework. If you have a house or other property that either can’t be connected to the grid, or would be very expensive to connect, then small scale, or micro generation is usually the cheapest, or only option. However if you are already connected to the grid then the upfront cost of setting up a small scale generation system means you are unlikely to get any reduction in energy cost over the life of the system. Energy conservation and efficiency is likely to be a much cheaper and more effective option for you if you want to reduce your energy bills. Grid connected systems allow you to generate your own electricity without needing a battery bank. At times when your micro-generation doesn’t meet your

electricity needs, or you aren’t using all the electricity you are generating, the grid provides a back-up, acting as a battery. These systems are also called gridtied, or grid-interactive, and can use one or a combination of any small scale generation technologies. The electricity grid acting as a battery isn’t a free service though. You will buy electricity from the grid at retail prices, but generally get less than retail for excess electricity you sell back into the grid. The generation technologies that you can use include solar PV, micro hydro and small wind turbines. New Zealand is in a different situation from most other countries when it comes to renewable energy use, with 77% of our electricity coming from renewable sources and all new future generation expected to be renewable as well.

| Ph 09 459 1350 – Mobile: 021 399 967 SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Also available at:

RURAL WOMEN ADVERTORIAL

Socks you wished Santa had delivered

by Andrew Healey

Have you ever plucked a pair of socks from your Christmas stocking? In most cases, you’d probably wish you hadn’t — they are on about the same excitement scale as handkerchiefs. However, if Santa had kindly delivered TXG graduated compression socks, I suspect your reaction would be quite different. This is because TXG compression socks can make life much more comfortable — particularly if you suffer from a health condition like diabetes, deep vein thrombosis or lymphedema, or if you are recovering from injury, or simply want to regain your active lifestyle. Compression socks work by reducing the diameter of distended veins in the legs, which results in a speeding up of venous blood flow, the compression is tightest at the ankles and becomes less constrictive towards the knees — this graduated compression leads to increased blood circulation, reduced swelling, tiredness and aching in legs and even boosts energy levels. TXG New Zealand has a range of graduated compression socks, specifically designed for athletes and sports enthusiasts, they incorporate patented X pattern support of the ankles, reduce the build-up of lactic acid and aid recovery of muscle tissue after exercise.

For more information visit: www.txgsocks.co.nz, or phone Heather on 0800 894 769 for a brochure or a free, no obligation chat about how compression wear can help you reclaim your active lifestyle.

Grape seed extract for your heart A major benefit of well formulated supplements is that they can introduce beneficial nutrients at levels that translate to real health benefits. Most people will have heard of the ‘French Paradox’ — the apparent contradiction that the French diet is high in saturated fats yet they have low levels of heart disease. The most important red wine antioxidants are OPC (proanthocyanidins) from grape seeds and Resveratrol from the skins. Maybe our appalling heart health statistics have as much do with low levels of these potent antioxidants than too much butter. OPC and Resveratrol have significant cardio protective qualities. They help protect circulating cholesterol from oxidation which can help reduce inflammation in artery walls. Additionally they help to prevent blood from becoming too sticky allowing good blood flow. But here is the problem. The French high red wine intake is great for the heart but not for the liver. This is where good antioxidant supplements play an important role. A study ‘Cardioprotective Effects of Dietary Polyphenols’ (Zern, et al, 2005) observed the powerful benefits these compounds have on cholesterol metabolism and importantly in reducing the inflammatory process that is a contributor to blocked arteries. This is also why they are also great for joint health and other inflammatory problems. I started using these compounds from supplements nearly 20 years ago with profound personal benefits and I have observed their benefits in thousands of people over that time. Like all antioxidants the greatest benefits are when different antioxidants are combined. A great combination is to blend Resveratrol with well researched ActiVin™ OPC, Acai berry extract, Green tea extract, Goji extract, Ginkgo biloba and Alpha lipoic acid. No rust in the Bridge! The new Whangarei Bridge is already the icon for Whangarei. But have you ever wondered what the long, white arms look like on the inside? Called the J4’s, their inside reminds of a square submarine with the bulk heads installed but the doors missing. Using a good lamp you can see all the way down to the ends looking in from the inspection hatch in the middle. Being steel, and the engineers wanting the possibility to check for damages or stress points, rust protection on the inside was a hot topic. OSH issues and cost were another. So traditional paint or tectyl style coatings were out. Why? In theory, rust or cracks could develop underneath the paint

undetected. Sandblasting and repainting would be hard yakka. The same problem is ever present in aviation, especially in high strung fighter planes of the world. That’s why the bridge builders together with Whangarei District Council opted for just the product protecting aircraft, war ships, cranes and power stations for almost 20 years. CorrosionX, relatively new to the NZ market, was sprayed as a fine fog into the J4 arms in July 2013. That took 6 litres and a day’s work for two staff. FOOD SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.

14 months later the WDC representatives and technical staff of Corrosion Control NZ Ltd, the importers for CorrosionX, opened the bridge to inspect her for possible rust on the inside and found — nothing! Condensation running down the walls. But not a hint of rust was found. No gas, no smell. Just grey, clean steel walls gleaming with a hint of CorrosionX. CorrosionX is MPI approved, non-toxic, safe on rubber/neoprene/insulation and plastics. Nonflammable, safe to 36.000 volt and simply an outstanding penetrant and lubricant. 1 litre coats 1.000 sqft. Even if those 1.000 sqft are wet or rusty! Best of all — It will last you! Tractors need a super thin coating worth about$20 sprayed from a kero gun to be protected from rust, electrolysis and bad electrical performance. Hydraulic fittings, fertilisers, electrics/electronics, pumps and irrigation gear are protected in seconds without any prep work.

No mess. No smell. Dirt or concrete won’t stick to it. Available from good farm supplies and shops listed on www.corrosionx.org.
