The recent theft of 500 dairy cows has been another harsh wake up call for the industry as farmers consider if they are taking the right precautions in protecting their second largest asset. Michael Lee, an agribusiness audit specialist at Crowe Horwath advises how the introduction of simple systems can mitigate potential theft. The Federated Farmers’ dairy industry chairperson, Andrew Hoggard points out if a bank was robbed there would be uproar, but police don’t tend to see stock as cold, hard cash. Mr Lee agrees saying, “Stock theft is extremely important for farmers as not only do they lose their capital when stock is stolen, which for a dairy cow can be up to $2,000, they also suffer the loss of revenue from that stock. “With the introduction of electronic identification tags individual stock can be scanned and identified.” He says this is one way to mitigate stock losses. “EID can be used to reconcile back to the farm’s records. Keeping track of the records regularly also means high death rates are identified in a timely manner. On top of that he suggests farmers scan their animals four times a year. “Incorporating a basic schedule of

scanning allows for reconciliation of numbers to ensure there are no irregularities in stock numbers.” Mr Lee suggests a possible stock reconciliation schedule for farmers could look like the following: March — to establish the opening number for the season, May — prior to winter grazing, August — upon returning from winter grazing and prior to calving and October/ November — post calving. “Integrating simple and achievable measures in the farming calendar could potentially alert farmers to a discrepancy in stock level. While protecting farmers from stolen stock is one of the factors this mitigates, it also allows farmers to be reactive to other problems on their farm such as death rates in calving.”

The Ballance board has two women at the table for the first time, with the Ballance North Island election results now in. Whakatane chartered accountant and farmer Donna Smit is joining the board of Ballance Agri-Nutrients. She and returning director Sarah von Dadelszen will fill two vacancies in the North Island. With their election, the Ballance board has two women at the table for the first time. Eight candidates contested the two vacancies created by the retirement of Oliver Saxton after 15 years and the retirement by rotation of Sarah von Dadelszen. Chairman David Peacocke has congratulated both on their election. “Sarah has made a strong contribution since her election in 2014 and we look forward to gaining from Donna’s farming and commercial experience. Both have secured very good support within our shareholder base, especially given the strong field of candidates. “It’s particularly pleasing that our board will be more representative of the diversity so common in farming partnerships. A diverse range of perspectives and ideas is key for our success, and gender representation is one indicator of how our diversity is tracking.” Donna and her husband Corrie run a successful family farming operation

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

STEEPED IN

HISTORY BY ANN MORGAN

Kahoe Farms is a working beef farm with up to 400 head of cattle, breeding cows and a hostel for travellers to stay in. The farm is situated on approximately 750 acres plus leased land north of the Bay of Islands with views of the Whangaroa Harbour and Doubtless Bay.

T

he farm is run by Michael and his Canadian partner Kirsten whom he met through the hostel back in 2001. He is the fourth generation of the Johanson family, and his sister Lyndsey runs the bed and breakfast hostel on site. She came to help me move some cattle and never left says Michael. “Kahoe Farms Hostel has been running since 1991. After university I did my big OE and met my husband Stefano who is Italian. We worked in the tourism industry and thought coming back to the family farm was something we’d really like to do,” said Lyndsey. “When we were growing up our parents always had people staying and we always had a lot to do. There is a hostel on the other side of the harbour

and they used to bring their guests around for days on our property so I was used to having tourists around. “It is nice to share our property with people. Being our family farm and that we are still here is special, and we are proud of our heritage.” Guests enjoy the walks around the farm and the nearby Whangaroa harbour and the lane cove walk. Michael and Lindsey’s Swedish greatgrandfather built the original family homestead, a treasured colonial villa in 1880, and their grandfather built a Californian bungalow on the property in the 1920s. “Our great-grandfather was the ship’s carpenter on a whaling ship. They came in to Totara North for supplies and he saw what was here and liked it so he

Michael Johanson and his Canadian partner Kirsten met when she stayed at the farm hostel

wrapped his tools around his waist and jumped ship as they were leaving. “He found work at the local ship building yard and he eventually built the house out of kauri and native wood.” Michael says running the family farm is a nice way to continue something on

through the family that the generations before held dear to their heart. “I run beef on a self-contained system, and have either an angus/ friesian or a hereford/friesian herd. The stock all go off-farm after one winter at 21 months of age.

“I have a very low stocking rate to get the bulls up to a really good weight. I average 340 kilograms on the bulls for 20 months and 240 kilograms for the heifers. “It is a very simple system because you are not carrying large animals through their second winter. There are a few of us doing this now because you can produce good quality animals. “I leave the calves on the cows later than most so they get up to good size just before they are weaned.” Michael says the farm was never properly developed in the 60s so it is fairly rough in places with a lot of marginal land facing the South with a lot of scrub regeneration, and keeping the weeds at bay is a constant battle. “The original farm was twice the size it is now, my great-grandfather hid at the entrance to the harbour for a few days when he jumped ship to be sure the boat wasn’t coming back. They say he bought the property off a local businessman who won the title to the farm in a game of cards. “The original owner thought he had such a good hand he put the title to his property in for his bet and lost the game. It was just a large bit of land with large trees taken off. There is still a lot of kauri here in various sizes dotted around the place. There is a plaque in the little house at Cornwall Park which

Michaels niece Anna spends time with the Kunekune pigs at the farm

is john Logan Campbell’s house and it acknowledges the house was built with kauri that came from the valley of the Kahoe farm.” Kahoe farms is an amalgamation of three dairying units. Two are the original farm and one has been added on from a neighbouring property. The original

property was split up when their greatgrandfather handed the farm on to his sons as small dairy units. “My father then brought his cousin’s place next door. We have two pieces, state highway 10 goes through the middle and another branch of the family has the other two pieces.”

ames Te Tuhi of Te Kopuru received the Dune Restoration Trust of New Zealand’s Pingao and Toheroa Trophy earlier this year which celebrates the exceptional contributions of an individual to coastal restoration. Mr Te Tuhi is a key member of Te Roopu Whakaoranga o te Taha Moana Trust, which aims to replenish toheroa and native grasses, spinifex and pingao, alongside each other on Northland’s coast. He is the second recipient of this award which acknowledges his work restoring the dunes of Northland as well as his educational work sharing

information and experience to schools and other groups. “I retired from the army in 1977. When I came home the toheroa stocks were diminishing. I would go out to the beach every day and look at things and started to study them and began to keep records and travel up and down the beach and find toheroa,” said Mr Te Tuhi. He has studied toheroa for more than 30 years. For many years he harvested and relocated toheroa stocks, spinifex and pingao from the Kaipara to Muriwai and up to Ninety-Mile Beach alongside his friend Barry Searle, in order to

enhance toheroa numbers. Another friend, Betsy Young, does the same in the Far North. “I recalled what my grandmother taught me when I was a young boy about the grasses and toheroa. Where these grasses are, toheroa can grow. It is vital to toheroas’ existence because of their life cycle. “The shellfish and grasses were very scattered and sparse. I used what knowledge I had and researched books and started planting the grasses and translocating toheroa along the coast. “When toheroa spat, the eggs run around in the tide for 21 days and then float to the top of the water. It gets in the huka (the sea foam) and the wind blows the huka up onto the beach. The foam runs up the pingao and slides down into it and germinates at the bottom. “When the female tumbleweed ripens and falls off the grass, it is blown by the wind along the coast line and the spat drops off and sits at the bottom of the dunes and grows more, then it works its way back toward the water. Toheroa don’t live submerged in the water, they live in the sand up from the water and have six hours in the tide and six hours in the sand.” Mr Te Tuhi met Barry Searle, a scientist, on Ripiro Beach many years ago and he was also restoring the grass and toheroa so they joined forces for their project. “We researched how the Maori looked after the toheroa. It was an important food source in the old days. Barry with his pakeha information joined our knowledge together and we have

had a lot of success in re-establishing toheroa. We went to the middens where the shells were dumped, and found they only took shellfish up to four inches in size many years ago. It has medicinal properties for the elderly and they were careful with what they took. “We believe it was when the factories opened up to can and process toheroa to export to England that they harvested the very large ones and this is what killed our resource. The size of the shells we found at those middens were very big. We have been teaching the children all over the North Island, showing them how the grasses and shellfish live together and we pass on Maori lore and ecological information. It is good to see toheroa stocks have grown. “I have also taught my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren what I know so that they have the knowledge for future generations.” In 2003 Mr Te Tuhi was granted an honorary Master of Applied Science degree from the Auckland University of Technology for his work and he was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for service to the community. “The Dune Restoration Trust of New Zealand’s Pingao and Toheroa Trophy is not given out every year — it is only given when someone deserving is recognised. It is not just about planting the grasses — it is the story of the grasses and toheroa living together,” said Dune Restoration trust chair, Greg Bennett. “Before James joined the Dune Restoration Trust along with Betsy Young from the Far North, we only knew the scientific side of things, now we

7

James with Dune Trust members Betsy Young and Harold Matthews in his car that advertises his dune restoration work understand all the cultural dimensions thanks to their understanding. Their knowledge has been very important across the country.” The toheroa are

still among the most protected species in New Zealand. The harvesting of the shellfish is illegal except under customary permit.

KEEPING COUNTRY BY AYLA MILLER

Phil Godfrey sets up for his regular Saturday show Farmlands Weekend Country Muster

For Phil Godfrey his 36-year volunteer career with community radio stations has been simply a means through which to indulge his passion for country music.

Lifestyle Sacks & Bags

ustralian-born Phil first became involved in radio in Armadale New South Wales on the station 2ARM FM in 1980. “They didn’t have a country music programme back then so I started going into the station and helping out some of the presenters. A spot came up on a folk show and they asked if I could present folk music. I said I can do country but not folk.” They agreed and the then 36-yearold sheep farmer began hosting regular weekly programmes. “I used to record local country musicians and play them on the radio. Through doing that I would take some of

these musicians to gigs and they talked me into getting a guitar, so I started doing a bit of music and some bush poetry myself. “I never dreamt of being a radio presenter, it was more a means of indulging in my passion for country music.” He stayed at 2ARM FM for 12 years before moving to New Zealand with his Kiwi-born wife in 1992. “We were getting quite a few droughts in Australia and my late wife was a Kiwi. She kept telling me it rains more over here so we decided to move. I started farming sheep but now it’s mainly dairy grazing.”

The 72-year-old is also the man behind the Wai Worri Woolshed Country Muster held in his old woolshed in Aranga, 40 kilometres north of Dargaville. The country muster is a two-day music festival, which has been held in its current format since 2005 and has seen an array of international country music stars and local talent perform. Abby Christodoulou of Mae Valley and X-Factor fame used to perform at the festival as well when she was younger. Through his work as a radio announcer he has had the opportunity to meet many of the big names in country music circles. “Over the years I’ve been able to get to know and interview a lot of the big country music names. They didn’t get a lot of air time in the 90s on commercial radio so when these little community stations started up they used to be quite eager to get themselves heard. It has had its rewards.” When he moved into the Kaipara he became involved with Dargaville’s first community radio station. “It was 1995 when they started Radio Dargaville in the Turiwiri Hall. When that radio ceased in 1996 some of us decided we should have a community radio. We purchased a licence and Big River FM first went to air on February 14, 1997.”

Over the years Phil has witnessed a lot of changes and believes technology has made things easier for radio announcers. “The biggest change has been the compression of music. MP3s have made such a difference. When I first started, interviews would go on reel to reel tapes and if you wanted to splice them, you actually had to get a pair of scissors and cut it out and splice it together again. That’s the biggest change — the technology — from tape recorders to audio processors. “It has made it easier and improved the quality of sound. When I started there were no CDs. We had two turntables so we mostly played vinyl and cassettes.” He says all it takes to have a long successful career in radio is a passion for what you do. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Organx™ — The New Way to Farm Nutrient rich soil produces nutrient dense food, bringing health and vitality to all life.

Retail Wholesale Homekill 167 Kamo Road Kensington, Whangarei Phone 09 437 0571

Topsoil and water are the two most precious things we have on our planet, more precious than gold, silver or platinum. Without topsoil and water we cannot feed ourselves, so, it is paramount that we take good care of our topsoil and our water. Today, based on current agro-chemical production methods, many experts are predicting that agricultural topsoil around the globe will be lost within the next 60 years. United Nations, Food & Agricultural Organisation, stated in 2015 — The International Year of the Soil, that soil is a nonrenewable resource. Its preservation

is essential for food security and our sustainable future, it also commented that soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human life span. Here at Agrissentials we dispute that call. From anecdotal evidence recorded over an eight year period, we took 50mm topsoil on a clay base down to 250mm — 300mm of topsoil depth, just by applying our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers at two applications per year over Ralph Littler’s Dairy Farm in Ruawai, Northland. The agro-chemical fertilisers and sprays have a huge impact on microorganisms resulting in soil erosion — according to Dr. Morgan Williams’ report to the Government in 2004 soil erosion from farms was calculated at 200 — 300 million tonnes of topsoil per year — that is not sustainable! However, don’t panic, Go Organx™! With our system you have the opportunity to set up your own topsoil regenerating and re mineralising system using Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich, certified ORGANX™ fertilisers. The new market is ORGANX™ and Agrissentials ORGANX™ system hold the key to the “X FACTOR” of soil health and soil wealth, with our live, living, certified BioGro fertilisers. Here is the opportunity to break the chains of chemical torture, to walk away from the agro-chemical system that is

locking farmers into low price, commodity markets, and high price chemical rescue remedies, that no longer work — it’s a crazy chemical treadmill. The time is right for ORGANX™ with the consumer calling out for safe, certified, nutritiously rich food together with farmers beginning to look and understand that the best way to secure their farms and their farming future is to start working with mother nature instead of working against her and having to pay bag loads of money to the chemist for remedies that struggle to maintain production. The game is changing, the consumer has already changed and the farmers are recognising new opportunities to produce better quality food for better returns. The transition from agro-chemical to ORGANX™ is seamless; basically all that happens is to exchange synthetic, soluble, erosive chemical fertilisers for Agrissentials live, living, multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which bring health and vitality back to the farm and back to the environment — now, how simple is that! This is your farm without proper Calcium and Magnesium in the soil. Most farmers misunderstand the role of Magnesium and Calcium in soil fertility

Standard NPK grows grass, but...

Meet Your Grass-growing Workers

Chances are your grass grower of choice is a standard NPK fertiliser. Most farmers go for that. That’s because they’ve been told that Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are the three key nutrients for growing pasture. And there’s no doubt that NPK works. Every farmer can see the grass growing results for themselves. But there are a couple of things you can’t see.

The Two Missing Gears Even though your NPK fertiliser will do a job for you, it won’t condition the soil, grow grass, and ultimately produce milk as well as it should. Not if two crucial elements are missing. Calcium and Magnesium. These two elements are crucial to a proper fertiliser programme. That’s because Ca and Mg regulate and activate the other nutrients. They are the nutrients that link everything together to enable all the elements to function at full capacity. When we say “everything” and “all the elements,” we mean the nutrients already existing in your soil and the billions of living organisms in the soil that are largely responsible for grass growth and soil health. To examine what Calcium and Magnesium actually do, we need to look at what’s going on beneath the grass.

Fertiliser effectiveness is based around the calcium content of your soil. If the base saturation calcium is below 60%, nutrient uptake is restricted.

What Magnesium Does Worker #1: Good bacteria. In the soil factory, these guy make nutrients available to plants, increase nutrient retention, and enhance soil structure to improve the flow of water and reduce erosion. They release plant growth hormones that stimulate root growth and improve root architecture. They detoxify soil and suppress disease by protecting plants from Pathogens. Worker #2: Fungi Fungi decompose complex carbon compounds and improve the accumulation of organic matter. Some fungi produce hormones and antibiotics which enhance root growth and provide disease suppression. Others physically bind soil particles into aggregates which helps air and water flow as well as the transportation of nutrients to plants. Worker #3: Protozoa Protozoa are single-celled microorganisms that are active near the root zone. Protozoa release excess nitrogen and nutrients for plants to use and also help soil particles to bind together to provide pore space for retention and exchange of air and water. Worker #4: Nematodes These non-segmented worms mineralise nutrients into plantavailable forms and consume disease-causing organisms.

Magnesium is essential for plant growth. It is actively involved in photosynthesis and also plays an important role in plant respiration and energy metabolism. • Mg is a carrier for Phosphorus so will ensure a steady flow of Phosphorous to the plant. • Mg increases nitrogen fixation in legumes. • Mg is an enzyme activator and constituent of many enzymes. • Mg is responsible for sugar synthesis and starch translocation. • Mg enables nutrient uptake control. Magnesium is also necessary in hundreds of animal biochemical pathways, particularly those involved in nerve function. Ruminants also require magnesium for efficient feed conversion and metabolism.

But I already use Ca and Mg! Some off-the-shelf fertilisers have a Mg/Ca component in them. Should work, right? It depends. The Calcium and Magnesium in standard fertilisers are chemically produced in laboratories. In artificially hardened forms, these nutrients are far less effective than the organic Ca/Mg that soil biology and plants prefer.

Worker #5: Soil Arthropods These guys improve the soil factory structure through burrowing. Their fecal pellets help bind soil particles and their waste is rich in plant nutrients.

Your Soil is a Grass-Growing Factory Think of what a factory is: a place where goods are manufactured. But manufacturing requires more than just a location; to produce goods, a factory needs to be filled with workers – labourers who have specific jobs that enable products to be made. Like a typical factory, your soil is filled with workers. These are the organisms that are labouring to make tonnes of healthy grass for your herd. Without this underground workforce, nothing grows. They are literally that important. As a farmer, you are the CEO of this factory. Your job is to make sure the soil labourers have everything they need to do their grass-growing work.

Golden Bay Dolomite is Organic Dolomite is a 59% calcium 39% magnesium carbonate occurring as a completely natural rock deposit found in New Zealand only at Mount Burnett, Golden Bay.

Worker #6: Earthworms These guys improve soil stability, porosity, and moistureholding capacity by burrowing and binding soil. They even help root growth by creating channels lined with nutrients. The burrows of vertical earthworms pipe air deeper into the soil, stimulating microbial nutrient cycling at those deeper levels. During droughts these tunnels allow for deep plant root penetration into subsoil regions of higher moisture content.

How Calcium Helps Calcium is known as the King of minerals. That’s because Ca is the transportation nutrient that enhances the uptake of many other nutrients. Some of its functions include: • Improves the soil environment for micro-organisms • Promotes healthy root, stem and leaf growth • Should be between 60 - 70% soil base saturation

Dolomite’s magnesium release rate makes it the perfect magnesium controlled release fertiliser. As plant root acid secretions in the soil work on dolomite, its rate of breakdown accelerates in demand to plant requirements, releasing both magnesium and calcium in quantities sufficient to meet requirements, something even a mixture of lime and MgO can’t do.

New red meat strategy The story of New Zealand farming and its farmers will be at the heart of Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s new market development strategy targeting new and emerging markets. Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons says development of a red meat sector story which captures the culture, values and integrity that’s long been associated with New Zealand sheep and beef farmers, will be an angle they aim to exploit in differentiating this country from its competitors in the international marketplace. “The story, building on New Zealand’s farming systems with free-range, grassfed livestock — farmed to the highest standards of animal welfare — will be authenticated through a national quality assurance programme, developed through the Red Meat Profit Partnership. This programme harmonises existing meat company QA programmes,” says Mr Parsons. “The New Zealand red meat story and national assurance programme will support meat companies’ own individual marketing strategies and will be a valuable resource for other partners like meat importers, distributors, retailers and food service operators, and government agencies.” This marketing strategy marks a change in direction for BLNZ’s market development programme. The farmer-funded organisation has worked collaboratively with the red meat sector to develop a long-term sector

strategy with clearly defined roles for BLNZ, meat exporters and marketers and industry stakeholders. “BLNZ will transition out of a market maintenance role in mature markets to focus on developing future growth opportunities, while meat companies will continue their efforts to maintain existing markets,” says Mr Parsons. Under the new direction BLNZ will be closing permanent offices in the United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan in favour of more flexible resources based in New Zealand. They will continue to have a base in China and the organisation will still maintain its own strong, international network and continue to work internationally with partner organisations including meat companies, Meat Industry Association, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. “This strategy does not affect the BLNZ office in Brussels where the focus on maintaining trade access arrangements and international relationships with our counterpart organisations in Europe is more important than ever. “Our established markets are still vitally important, however, responsibility for servicing and maintaining these markets will be managed primarily through our meat exporters using

New Zealand red meat story collateral developed by BLNZ. The sector agreed that our exporters have deep commercial relationships developed over many years and are well placed to look after the market maintenance role. “We consulted widely over 12 months, running numerous focus groups and workshops and the result is quite a fundamental shift in approach, strongly supported by meat exporters and farmers. We are confident the new approach will drive greater impact for farmers on every levy dollar invested. While New Zealand’s beef and lamb products are well positioned in consumers’ minds, farm gate returns are still not satisfactory and an area we can influence is how we better position our products in consumers’ minds.”

With agriculture the heartbeat of the New Zealand economy, there is a massive investment in plant and machinery to improve production in our largest export sector. Be it beef or dairy, grain or fruit, vegetable or value-added processed food from a myriad sources, our primary produce has acquired a deserved reputation in the international marketplace for quality. And quality starts with the basic production line — the land. Rural contractors and agrichemical applicators are working to make sure our agricultural products stay world leaders. The aforementioned large investment in machinery, together with health, safety and environmental requirements, means that having the right skills and knowledge is more important than ever. InfraTrain, formerly known as the New Zealand Contracting Industry Training Organisation Ltd. has worked with the rural contracting industry to develop a range of qualifications which recognise these skills, and represent best practice. Qualifications are suitable for people at all levels — from those just starting out, or moving from a different industry, to those in supervisory or management roles in rural contracting.

The National Cer tificate in Agrichemical Application has been developed for those involved in applying agrichemicals across the board. This qualification, plus at least 200 hours

of practical experience, is required for a registered applicator’s certificate recognised by regional councils and is regarded as the benchmark for safe agrichemical application.

Farm work in safety The farm environment can be a hazardous one, and health and safety considerations extend to all those involved in agricultural and pastoral activities, with Worksafe NZ taking a leading role in a health and safety oversight. WorkSafe’s agriculture programme manager Al McCone says while many farmers will want to get consultants in to give them expert advice, there is no single product or document that is a silver bullet for farm safety. “Farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisors. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” said Mr McCone. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers, and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. “Farmers should make sure that they’re not simply going to get a folder or piles of forms someone else has done for them. That won’t make their farm any safer. “What they actually need is a way of building a health and safety culture into farm activities and constructing a really effective culture of involving everyone. “There’s no substitute for the unique knowledge the farmer, family and workers have of the land, its terrain, its facilities and day-to-day operation,” said Mr McCone.

“What’s most important is everyone on-farm thinking about the risks and managing them so everyone stays healthy and safe. When everyone is involved there is a positive impact on other parts of the business.” Mr McCone says while there are good health and safety consultants out there, they are not all of the same quality and effectiveness. “Farmers need to make sure they are working with a competent and qualified professional safety advisor — that may not be the first health and safety advisor they get talking to at the local field day.” To help farmers buy the right kind of support, the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), the national umbrella organisation representing all workplace health and safety professions, has developed a simple checklist. Ask them these five quick questions before making a decision: Which professional association do you belong to — can you confirm this? What qualifications and/or certification do you have? What relevant skills and experience do you have for this job? Can you give me examples of similar work you have

done recently? Are you happy for us to contact your clients about your work for them? Worksafe NZ has laid down guidelines for both principal and contractor: ‘Contractors and sub-contractors have the same duty of care to their employees as any other employer. Contractors need to know what farmers health and safety procedures are so they can assess their employees’ safety on site. ‘Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that workers face and how the site will be made safe’.

Rural contracting often starts at home — on the farm. Agriculture equipment standing idle is not going to help the bottom line and many farmers take the opportunity to undertake contract work to boost income. The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how to proceed in tendering for contracts. It says tendering for work can be time consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards. ‘You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’ it says. ‘Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. ‘An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward. But applying for larger and/or longterm contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You’ll need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and

energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business

opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply. You’ll need to think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself: Do I have the people and resources to fulfill the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment?

Keep accurate records Farmers are urged to commit to getting employee records and contracts right after large fines were issued during a Labour Inspectorate investigation into a dairy farm. Federated Farmers Bronwyn Muir says it is essential farmers keep up-to-date contracts and wage and time records for all employees. “Agriculture needs to attract a good quality, motivated workforce to drive productivity gains and to improve performance. Farmers need to provide workplaces which will attract those people. “Getting the basics of employment law right is the foundation to build that attractive work environment.” Federated Farmers regularly holds employment workshops which have been well attended and promote best practice to its members. Legally compliant contracts and employment agreements are available for purchase from Federated Farmers for members and non-members that meet all the requisite employment legislation. “Legislation does change over time and it’s important to keep on top of changes and keep everything up-todate,” says Ms Muir. “We have a large number of contracts, templates and policies available to assist our members to remain safe and compliant employers. It’s better to pay for advice and be compliant than pay a fine. “We all need to be compliant for the good of the industry and those who work in it.” Any farmer who is unsure whether their records and documents are compliant should seek assistance immediately.

ADVERTORIAL

Diamond in the rough Phillips Ag Contracting are the proud owners of one of the only two Great Plains planters in New Zealand and the only one in Northland. Owner operator Mark Phillips says this machine is unique and that it plants the maize in a diamond formation which gives the seeds more space and enables more light to reach them. This results in better nutrient uptake, in turn creating a better yield. He says a planter is one of the most important pieces of equipment in any farming operation and the accuracy and dependability of this along with your contractors are critical to your performance. A good planter needs to be precise in order to place the seed in a variety of residue and soil types, as well as accurately seeding a large area efficiently. “We can also take care of all cultivation needs including air seeding for chicory and turnips along with groundwork, silage work, pit and

baling, mowing and raking,” Mark says. Mark comes from a dairy farming and cropping background and brings with him real life experience and practical knowledge. He has worked for five years with maize and has been contracting on and off for around 20 years. The Phillips Ag Contracting team is made up of four full-time and 13 parttime staff who service all of the Kaipara. “Our team is efficient because we do everything from spraying to harvesting with global positioning systems which minimises human error. We are fast, reliable, honest and offer value for money.” They are able to offer advice to their clients about what works best for their farm as well as supply trucks, trailers, diggers and spray equipment to help you get the job done.

Log prices ease ahead

Forestry returns look brighter after New Zealand export log prices rose slightly in September in the wake of stable costs — transport and exchange rates — giving a return on the same time last year of 35 per cent more. SEE OUR ADVERT ON PAGE 16.

The average wharf gate price for A-grade logs stood at $111 a tonne in September, from $110 for the previous month. Source for the figures came from AgriHQ’s monthly survey of wood exporters, forest owners and saw millers. “Export log returns look to have stabilised following the weakness observed last month, with wharf gate returns faring better than some had previously anticipated through August and early September,” AgriHQ analysts Reece Brick and Shaye Lee said in their report. “Few of the key factors which influence returns at the wharf gate moved by any significant degree, leading to this steadying of the market.” They added that pricing through China has exceeded some expectations, helped by lower inventory levels than last year. While the exchange rate has varied over the past four weeks, it has

averaged at a level roughly in line with the previous month, ensuring NZ dollar returns remained stable. Shipping rates were very slightly up but the report found that these were still well below the levels reached in previous years. Shipping costs to China rose slightly to US$18.1/ JAS (Japanese Agriculture and Forestry Standards), from US$17.4/JAS last month, and compared with US$22 a year ago. The cost to South Korea was little changed at US$17.8/JAS from US$17.6/JAS last month, and US$21.2/JAS a year ago, while the cost to India was steady at US$24.4/JAS from US$24.9/JAS last month and US$29.6 a year ago. All grades of unpruned logs made marginally more at the wharf gate,

with pruned logs the only export grade to record a decline in prices, due to pressure on pruned log prices in China, the report said. “The general perception across the market is for a similar to slightly firmer end to the year, which will flow through into the start of 2017.”

Forestry focus in climate research by Paul Campbell

Forestry research will receive a boost with the allocation of $3.1 million in new funding for 13 climate change research projects in the agriculture and forestry sectors. The grants were announced on September 19 by the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change (SLMACC) research programme. “This funding plays an important part in helping our primary industries prepare for the future challenges of climate change,” said Primary Industry minister Nathan Guy. Associate minister Jo Goodhew, said a $250,000 grant was for a review of climate change research in New Zealand focussing on forests by the New Zealand Forest Research Institute Ltd. “Forestry is one of New Zealand’s largest and cheapest forms of carbon storage and will play an important role in adapting to climate change. We need to keep building our knowledge in this area if we are to ensure our forests continue to thrive in a changing climate,” Mrs Goodhew said. Another $935,000 is being invested in three projects to analyse soil carbon on hill country farms and under irrigation systems. “These projects and others like greenhouse gas mitigation research will help build our knowledge around the impacts of climate change on the sector

and how we can adapt and mitigate these effects.” SLMACC supports new climate change knowledge generation in the agriculture and forestry sectors for adaptation, mitigation, and cross-cutting issues. MPI director-general Mar tyn Dunne, says it’s essential to invest in research to better understand future operating environments and how we need to adapt. “We set research priority topics each funding round based on areas we want to investigate further for the benefit of primary industries. We consult internal and external experts to determine those topics. This year there were 12 priority topic areas. We received an extremely high calibre of applicants and were very impressed with the proposed research topics. “Each project will take up to three years to complete, and the findings will help researchers, government, and farmers better understand, adapt to,

Action at Pouto Celebrating its seventh year, the annual Pouto Horse Sports event at the Nathan family farm is a place equestrian enthusiasts are known to be on labour weekend, when a little bit of the wild west comes to town. Steve and his wife Kath personally built the arena that has become the venue for Pouto Horse Sports and where Steve also manages horse trekking and hunting adventures. “We are proud to have Tropex Exports continue to sponsor and support the event. This means prize money is up for grabs for the competitors and the spectators get to view the action for free,” said organiser Kath. “All of the events are against time and it is a fun day to get people involved in. Some may have only ridden casually and that is ok. Riders are often really surprised at what they can achieve with their horses on the day.” Steve explained: “We have had to reduce some of the events due to the danger element as the safety of the competitors, horses and cattle are always the utmost priority, but we have replaced these with more games where riders and their horse will feel challenged.

Helping with arthritis

I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid80s who had arthritis in her shoulder

and hands. She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-yearold whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Farmers of course, will be angry that the bureaucracy of regional councils will soon lead to another round of reasons to whip the living daylights out of them, as if they haven’t endured enough already. Federated Farmers will continue to do its political best to soften the blow and the public perception of farmers may drop a notch or two. This has caused me to climb to the top of the hill and look out at the big picture. Several pivotal questions come to light over this dilemma. • Do we really have a problem with our streams, rivers and lakes? Yes, we do. • Is there an excess of phosphates and nitrates leaching through our soils and into our waterways? Yes, there is.

• Is it fair and just to blame the farmer for this mess? No, I do not believe that we should blame the farmer entirely. There are two factors contributing to the pollution of our waterways; • Effluent management and cattle having access • Phosphate and nitrogen application compromising the plant’s ability to hold on to those nutrients. I do believe the industry has the first question under control and this does require direct input from the farmer. Compliance on rules and regulations under general circumstances should be the responsibility of the farmer. However, I believe the second question is another story! Fertiliser application and soil nutrient needs for pasture and cropping is generally a practice which

farmers leave to a specialist. These specialists are called on by farmers to advise them on what they need to grow their grass and crops. Possibly 95 percent of fertiliser in New Zealand is sold by two large companies, Ballance and Ravensdown. Interestingly, it is rumoured that these two large companies have influence on the education of soil and fertiliser scientists in New Zealand. I was impressed upon reading Ballance’s website to find that most of the specialists who are employed by them to advise and guide farmers what to buy, are very well educated indeed. While I was pouring another mug of coffee I got to thinking, what do these big companies make? Now I know why those environmentalists are so mad. Those companies have turned their well — educated scientists into salesmen! Farmers have been brainwashed and swear allegiance to these specialists who are now leaving them holding the can. It appears that this great science that has been taught needs an overhaul. Maybe it’s someone else’s turn. I hear a leading scientist is rambling on about some new science which he doesn’t understand. Maybe if he stopped communicating and listened, he might learn something! So just a gentle suggestion to councils: turn around and throw the stones the other way and give the farmers a break!

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Challenging assumptions The season is now well under way But even with a good Spring we still get lame cows. Why is this? What are the risk factors for lameness? We see an increased prevalence of lameness during mating, and animals in housed environments have different lameness challenges. There also seems to be challenges associated with diet that may contribute to lameness. The question then becomes ‘what are the real causes’? Research has shown that rough tracks and poor animal handling increase the prevalence of lameness. This is great information to have but, in and of itself, is of little value because there are farms with tracks that are so good that you could land a plane on them if they were a bit wider and yet lameness is very much an issue on some of those farms. There are farmers who are very conscious of, and particular with their animal handling — eg no pushing in the yard and staying 20 metres behind the cows when they walk to the cowshed and, once again, some have major lameness issues. And, of course, there are farms where the tracks are perfect and animal handling is fully under control and still the problem of lameness remains. The question therefore must be: “Why does research tend to only point to rough lanes and animal handling as the major causes of lameness in dairy cows?” Could it be that the focus on this one issue creates a blind spot where we are missing alternative causes? Research is great and can be very helpful to understand the environment around us. Often we understand a theory to be true but when a proper trial is being conducted it turns out that our theories are incorrect. Research is done

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

starting with a limited understanding of the ‘truth’. Even if we know quite a lot about the subject, it is still limited. It is also very difficult to eliminate the bias factor when it comes to research and be 100% objective. So, assuming that the research is done properly doesn’t mean that the conclusion drawn from that research is correct. This is why theories are often changed or even ‘proven’ wrong. A classic example of this is the research on eating eggs. I can choose whatever research result suits me on any given morning to justify me eating an egg or not. So, when we read a research paper that tells us that tracks and animal handling have an influence on the prevalence of lameness then that is the only conclusion you can draw from that. If you, the reader, then draw the conclusion that the research means that stones are the reason why bad tracks and bad animal handling is a problem then you have jumped to a conclusion based on assumptions. It may be an assumption coming from the research but nevertheless it is still an assumption. In order to ‘prove’ that it is the stones that are the culprit we need more targeted research to find evidence. As far as I am aware there has never been research done that supports that theory. I have heard arguments that say that it doesn’t matter because we know from the research that we need to handle our animals well and there are benefits in improving our tracks. This is true, however, without proper understanding we can never eliminate a problem completely. Whilst I don’t believe it is possible to completely

MIND YOUr SPeeD ArOUND ScHOOL bUSeS

eliminate lameness, how close we get will depend on understanding what the true causes of the problem are. Is it possible that bad tracks increase the prevalence of lameness because the cows spend more time per 24 hours on walking and therefore that decreases their available time for resting? Is it possible that poor animal handling increases stress hormones in the body beyond healthy levels and this contributes to problems like lameness? Research has shown a link with resting time, stress and lameness (Time Management for Dairy Cows — Michigan Dairy Review) Let me know what you think, email me: fred@veehof.co.nz

Wool Perspective

29

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Mixed fortunes for wool growers An unfortunate combination of reduced Chinese buyer interest and a reluctance by a number of wool growers to meet the market means that recent wool auctions suffered rather high passin rates. With a significant reliance on China as a major export destination for New Zealand wool, the lack of competition from that country in recent months has impacted heavily on the market, lowering returns in comparison to last year’s price levels for many growers of fine crossbred and medium to strong mid-micron wool types. The two September wool auctions conducted in Christchurch drew widespread support from growers across the South Island and bale numbers catalogued exceeded the “roster” in both cases, with approximately 23,000 bales catalogued in total comprised of a good mix of all wool types. Apart from the well-reported and well-known dry conditions affecting several areas within Canterbury, weather patterns over the past couple of months have assisted shearers to get the job done with very few, if any, interruptions to the wool harvesting programme. Wool broker

stores have been likened to a bee-hive with trucks laden with wool bales lined up each day waiting to be unloaded before returning to farm wool sheds to be re-loaded and the trip repeated. Crossbred full-length fleece types although cheaper than earlier in the season remained in reasonable demand throughout September with buyers focused on well grown, good character wools containing low vegetable matter contamination. Second-shear types were examined critically by exporters and once again the shorter wools took the brunt of the downturn. Longer secondshear types were in a slightly better space with a few more competitors bidding on those. With the crossbred hogget wool season upon us all eyes normally turn to China to buy crossbred hoggets in the approximately 29 to 34 micron ranges. However with few buyers representing China appearing interested, prices

RED DEVON EADON HIGHLAND FOLD PROGRESSIVE

for those types were at similar levels to coarser short wools with no premiums evident. Some magnificent Halfbred and Corriedale wools were on offer during September but buyers were very selective according to style and micron and many of the medium and coarse types returned disappointing levels to growers who were hoping for levels similar to last year. The finer edge however drew good support with many fleece types around 25 microns reaching well in excess of 1000 cents per clean kilogram, and 24 micron from 1100 to 1200 clean. Once again a very good standard of wool preparation was evident from the wool samples displayed prior to sale. With the Merino wool season in fullswing the quantity of those types offered during September increased significantly on August. The Christchurch auction enjoyed a renewed rally of grower

Kaipara angus

support compared to recent years and a large number of clips contained in the PGG Wrightson catalogue were of an exceptional standard. If there was any negative comment at all from buyers it was that a few wools were slightly overlong for their processor customers. Key focus from exporters was towards wools which were very sound for fibre strength, measuring better 38nkt or better, well skirted and even for length, but not over-classed. With the lower levels for crossbred wools likely to continue into the near future growers are urged to ensure their wools are prepared well. Growers must maximize their returns by skirting well and keeping similar lengths and strengths together. A reminder that readers should visit the Campaign for Wool website and in particular encourage children and grandchildren to visit www.woolinschools.nz to appreciate why we should all specify wool! That’s my view.

Power, prejudice and purists by Andy Bryenton

Not messing with a good recipe seems to be evergreen advice. From Marmite to chocolate to the formula for mind-numbing reality television, the correct dollops and drops which make up success need to be carefully doled out. It’s the same in the world of motoring, where (as the head designers at Porsche can attest) there is no such thing as too much of a winning formula. Or is there? When the new Ford Mustang was released with the option of a two-litre ecoBoost engine, strapped with double turbos, the outraged intake of breath could have emptied several Dearborn-sized assembly plants of oxygen. The Mustang, they said — the same ‘they’ who know for certain about certain celebrity persuasions — has to be a V8. Case closed. Chapter and verse. Less displacement means brand debasement. Then, one chilly spring morning, I stepped aboard a stainless-steel silver convertible Mustang equipped with the ecoBoost power plant. I put figures, quoted 0–60 times and prejudice out of mind and simply drove. What a revelation. Cast adrift from the expectation of the Mustang as a snarling V8 beast, the visceral pleasure of commanding 300 horsepower in a vehicle cut loose from excess weight up front is immediate. It has been said before, but there is something of the feel of Nissan’s old (pre current-form techno rocket) GT Skyline in the way that the Mustang handles its large proportions with grace, and all with what seems on paper to be

WHY THE HONDA 420FM2 WORKS ON FARM INCLUDES POWER STEERING

a tiny handful of displacement. Certainly, if one were to take on the purists in their own language, the ecoBoost makes sense. Better fuel economy is not part of the lexicon for many V8 stalwarts, but when a car accelerates this smoothly, corners this neatly and boasts a neat, mechanically satisfying gearshift (I was not tempted by the paddles on the fat, grippy wheel), then it’s hard to agree with those who opine that ‘half the engine is missing’. The only place where the lack of a full eight-pack is truly felt is aurally — there is nothing, not even Ford’s sonic wizardry, which can replace the hellfire chorus of a big mill. But, to be fair, the ecoBoost does have a very fine stereo and I do have AC/DC’s seminal Back in Black on hand. In reality, it’s tough to question whether the sound of the GT’s V8 alone is enough to justify the price difference. Yes, of course, there is a slight edge on power. There is that drag-race velocity which has the potential to get slightly heftier speeding tickets in the V8. It is, after all, a fantastic machine. But on a country road, on a spring morning, with preconceptions put aside, the 2.3 ecoBoost Mustang is simply excellent in and of itself. Try to find more fun for the price tag.

ADVERTORIAL

Battery aid for top performance Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphate buildup on internal lead plates and, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitaliser and Conditioner, this crust is very easy to treat. “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program. However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our program with 12 and 14 year-old batteries often still going.” “In fact our record battery life is 18 years old and still starting a tractor and after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia I think we may do better yet.” The recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons.

BATTERY ADDITIVE

“We are chemically reversing the sulphate build-up. Once treated a battery is is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. Prevention is the key — treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged.” Recharge is available at Farmlands or Gerard and Debbie will be at Christchurch A and P show again this year on site TP-20 and also the Camper Care Caravan show in Hardcastle Arena the week prior. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70. A more cost effective two litre

THE SIDE-BY-SIDE THAT’S GOT IT ALL

commercial pack is also available and that pack can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz or on TradeMe. As recharge is acid based it is classed as dangerous goods and expensive to freight.

“STOCK WANTED” Sell on your behalf Caravan, Motorhome and Campervans.

You can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell and re-sealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forkifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.
