ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

The Northland Rescue Sikorsky helicopters have done the equivalent distance as flying to the moon and back four times

With the needs of the charitable helicopter service constantly in the limelight — and the busy summer period looming — the timing of the appeal is critical. This year the campaign focuses on people of all walks of life, from tourists and sports people, to farmers, forestry workers, water sport enthusiasts and those people who live in the rugged rural spaces of Northland. Those stories will be showcased during the fundraising campaign at facebook. com/northland.rescuehelicopter.com Chairman of the Northland Emergency Services Trust, Paul Ahlers says funds raised contribute to general operating costs of the life-saving service. “Donations help cover the costs of fuel, maintenance, insurance and more. The fact is we need these donations and the trust continues to be humbled by the support of the Northland community in getting behind their rescue service. The service would not exist without their ongoing support,” says Mr Ahlers. Northland’s air ambulance service is considered one of the most costeffective operations of its kind in New Zealand. By necessity, it operates on an extremely tight budget and despite contending with an annual funding shortfall close to $1.5 million, continues to help people in their time of need — 24/7. Since 1988, close to 20,000 people have been transported by an array of helicopters in the service’s ever-evolving fleet which now comprises three

Sikorsky S76s which fly, on average, close to three times a day. “Our team continues to be busier than ever with expected annual hours flown likely to hit a record high of more than 1,200 hours this year, covering emergency medical missions from Kaitaia to Auckland and beyond. ‘We are looking to purchase new aircraft to replace our older helicopters and the first of the new machines should be in service sometime in 2018. A public fundraising campaign will be undertaken shortly to cover the cost of the upgrade. Mr Ahlers says the Government may also tender the emergency air ambulance service early in 2018, and NEST will be submitting a tender. “We are confident the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service will continue to be at the forefront of setting air ambulance standards across the country. “That is due to the commitment and calibre of our staff, associated emergency service personnel we work with daily, volunteers throughout our community and the people of Northland and beyond who continue to support us. We are really grateful for that. The annual fundraising campaign is backed by principal sponsors Northpower and Top Energy, who match public donations up to $150,000 and have been doing so since the first campaign back in 1988. The consumer-owned electricity lines companies have contributed millions of dollars towards helping save lives.

Warning as burning season looms

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES OctOber 2017

Northlanders are being asked to be courteous and follow the rules — or risk fines and other penalties — as they start thinking about burning unwanted vegetation and other waste material over spring. Council chairman Bill Shepherd says roughly a quarter of all calls to the Northland Regional Council’s environmental hotline involve complaints about burning and/or associated smoke nuisance. “However, burning typically increases during spring because as the weather improves, people are keen to start tidying up their properties ahead of the warmer summer months.” Chairman Shepherd says the council approach had toughened in recent years as backyard burning continued to generate large numbers of complaints. The harder line also applies to those caught breaching the rules at industrial and trade premises. “Open burning at industrial or trade premises is not permitted under our Regional Air Quality Plan and businesses breaching this rule now typically receive a $1000 instant fine, rather than the warning they may have got previously. “People living within the Whangarei city airshed — which is roughly bordered by Maunu, Onerahi, Tikipunga, Springs Flat and Hurupaki — shouldn’t be burning waste unless they are at least 100 metres upwind (and 50m in any other direction) of others, or unless they

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Originally from South Africa, the Dorper breed of sheep is a fast-growing, meat-producing animal that now contentedly graze on farms across New Zealand’s diverse landscape.

by Ann Morgan

“I

farmed them in South Africa as a youngster and the lambs reached good weights quickly. We grew them to 40kg in 100 days,” says Kevin Carr — owner of Valhalla Dorpers K&K Ltd. “Dorpers come in the black headed breed and the white. They are a hardy breed — the meat and carcass quality is identical and they can lamb all year around. “I was dairy farming here in 2002 and someone had just imported Dorpers, so I purchased my first white ram and two ewes off him. Due to family

circumstances I gave up dairy farming and started running the family waste water treatment company and started running my Dorpers on a 10-acre block.” By 2004 Kevin had 30 animals — mainly White Dorpers. He says at the time, that is what was called for in the commercial farming industry, as it is still today. Kevin’s partner Kath came on board with him in 2014. “Now we have both breeds. The Black Dorper has a black head, white body and black hooves, whilst the White Dorper is a totally white animal. The wool is a short, loose, light mixture of hair and

wool mixed. They self-shed so don’t need shearing, however, some don’t shed completely, depending on how much of the shedding gene they carry. Their crutches are clean and this means they don’t need dagging prior to going to the meat works. “There are now quite a few commercial farmers here in New Zealand that use Dorpers as terminal sires. We supply to clients from Kaitaia to Hawke’s Bay and beyond. We also export live sheep and frozen embryos to South America,” says Kevin. The couple won the ‘Highest Yielding Lamb’ in the country at the Canterbury Mint Lamb Competition in 2014 and this created a lot of enquiry. “We won ‘Top Yield’ in the Crossbred section and Terminal Breed section — this was yield of 61.5 per cent. We also won ‘The Most Tender Lamb’ — this test was done at Lincoln University.” Kevin says the breed does well in New Zealand conditions and buying new genetics from Australia helps with this. “The breed is perfect for ease of

maintenance and low running costs. Lambs grow very fast on their mothers and weigh well. Top lambs can be 40kg with an average of 36kg weaning at 100 days, with an average 17-20kg good quality carcass. Other breeds of the same weight will average a 1517kg carcass. “Dorpers are good on hill country and they are run extensively like this in Australia and South Africa. Some of the paddocks there are 1,000 acres, as big as the average farm here in New Zealand. “The farm I was on in South Africa was 34,000 acres. Over there, the shepherds took the flocks out in the mornings and brought them in at night to protect them from the wild life such as leopards, jackals and lynx. “In some of those areas, it is semidesert conditions and the temperature can go from 50 degrees during the day to minus six degrees in the morning. The Dorpers have a thicker skin compared to other breeds and can therefore tolerate the cold quite well.

Small prices,ON Exceptional small tractors

The couple often win awards for the high yields their sheep produce

“They can lamb out of the traditional season and they are multi estrous — — meaning that they can breed and lamb continuously year round with a long breeding season which is not seasonally limited. Consequently, under good forage conditions and with good management, the Dorper ewe can lamb three times in two years. “In 2014, we purchased two rams and 65 embryos from Australia from six different blood lines. We have recently been back over to Australia and bought

in with a syndicate — 10 new ewes and two new rams. These new bloodlines will improve our base flock even further. “We have frozen semen available all year round and embryos at certain times, for those wanting to do embryo work. “There is definitely a reason to use Dorpers over other breeds. The breed shows exceptional adaptability, hardiness, reproduction rates as well as good mothering abilities.” For more information contact Kevin on 027 273 6967.

We have more kiwi throughout Northland than people realise. “There are farmers with kiwi on their land and they have really good dog and pest control which is a huge issue for kiwi survival.” Kiwi Coast’s priorities are reducing threats to kiwi survival and engaging Northlander’s in caring for their kiwi. They strategically support predator control in key areas to link projects and create continuous trapping networks across the landscape that boost kiwi survival and allow their safe dispersal into new areas. “One group at Hikurangi, called the Tanekaha Community Pest

newly-signed par tnership between the Northland Regional Council and the Kiwi Coast Trust formally consolidates an existing strong working relationship between the pair, and links conservation projects, iwi and hapu, landowners, farmers, forest management companies, government agencies and schools which share a desire to boost kiwi numbers and create a ground-breaking linked corridor of kiwisafe areas. “The vision of Kiwi Coast is one of thriving wild kiwi, safely roaming throughout Northland, nurtured and cared for by Northlanders,” says Kiwi Coast coordinator Ngaire Tyson. “Kiwi Coast is a community-led collaborative and links a variety of

Control Area has 800 hectares of farmland linked together to help save kiwi for generations to come. They are roaming around farmland and through back yards and people are proud to say they have kiwi on their farm but pests such as stoats kill 95 per cent of kiwi before their first birthday.” Kiwi need to reach a weight of one kilogram to be able to fight predators off. “I have worked with kiwi experts and landowners for more than 10 years and I can share advice from council or professional trappers to help with pest control,” says Ngaire. “Northland has plenty of habitat, and food and the birds love farms, pine forests, and scrub and the birds are happy to come into the pasture to feed. They just need protection from the pests.” Ngaire says trapping a stoat is hard work but tying your dog up at night is super easy. “A stoat can quickly travel through their 100ha territories and Kiwi Coast Trust helps to link community trapping areas into continuous landscape scale networks to maximise trapping efficiencies and results. Kiwi are thriving on many Northland farms where dogs are well controlled. “Kiwi numbers are stable or going up in almost all managed areas with good pest and dog control along the Kiwi Coast — in other parts of the country they are declining. As people get into pest control we need to enable and

support them to look after their land the best way they can. We can help organise community events such as trapping workshops or provide signs so people are aware that there are kiwi in the area.” The partnership with NRC builds on more than 20 years of successful community-led kiwi recovery work and will help both parties with their mutual biodiversity and community goals. “To date, 96 entities have linked into the Kiwi Coast — 73 of which are community-driven landcare groups.

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

Collectively, these groups and projects are already carrying out pest control over more than 130,000 hectares.” Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says the council — which has itself been championing communityled pest control and kiwi recovery for many years — will provide a number of resources — both practical and financial to support Kiwi Coast. “We already contribute roughly $300,000 a year through various funding streams to a number of community pest control projects within

the Kiwi Coast area,” he says. “Under the new agreement, we will now make an additional contribution of almost $90,000 annually to the trust itself over the next five years to help with the project’s coordination. “Kiwi Coast has a truly impressive reach across a big swathe of the region, making it one of the largest communityled restoration projects of its type in the country.” For more information contact Ngaire Tyson, Kiwi Coast Coordinator on 0274 250 249 or visit www.kiwicoast.org.nz

THE DOCKING TOOL UPGRADE by Ann Morgan

Nicole Austin has invented a new version of the lambdocking tool that she has called the Moray lamb detailer. The innovative hand-tool is designed to help improve usability, performance and stock wellbeing, and has seen Nicole become the New Zealand winner of the prestigious James Dyson Award for design engineers.

“I

grew up on my parent’s lifestyle block but we had a lot of friends with big farms and we were often involved with helping them. Over the summer periods as a university student I would work at the local freezing works as well,” says Nicole. ‘For my honours project I was looking at an overall interest in the sheep farm industry and I decided lamb marking and docking was important. I saw huge potential in helping with the staple tools that I saw farm-to-farm because most of the innovation nowadays is for large machinery for larger scale farms.” By inventing the Moray, industrial designer Nicole has helped solve problems such as repetitive strain injuries faced by farmers. The innovative hand-tool is designed to help improve usability, performance and stock

wellbeing. “As a student I came to the conclusion that with the recent growth of the dairy industry, the sheep industry has been overshadowed. It is conservative and lacks innovation. “After spending five months looking at sheep farms, I focussed on the more physically demanding jobs such as castration, ear tagging and docking. Repetitive strain injury occurring to the hands of ageing farmers is very common, and my new design aims to overcome this.” Nicole has refined the tool to be 35 per cent lighter and to use 60 per cent less hand span than the docking iron currently used. “Fluctuations in blade temperatures can also cause issues leading to ineffective cauterisation and infection. Effective docking significantly reduces

lamb mortality and has a positive impact on the health and productivity of the animals involved. “The docking tool most commonly used was made in the 1960s with the design remaining unchanged for more than 40 years and is primitive and arduous on farmers’ hands.” Using piezoelectric igniting, Moray has a specialised double-chamber dampening shaft for reliable weatherproofing and consistent blade temperatures for clean cauterisation. The product prototype has been developed, and Nicole hopes to bring it into commercial production within the next year.. James Dyson Award New Zealand head judge and president of The Designers Institute, Mike Jensen, said the judging panel was impressed by Nicole’s deep exploration into how the product may provide significant improvements for animal welfare and user comfort. “Moray is a relatable product for our agricultural country. It’s exciting to see a functional and rugged design that has been well researched and that holds much commercial potential for domestic and international markets,” says Mike. “Nicole visited a series of farms to interview farmers, ran surveys and undertook rigorous design workshops during the research phase. She also spent time docking to truly understand the process and the current challenges faced by farmers during the highly labour-intensive docking season. “The result is a prototype design that will save time and definitely effort,

around road works

Nicole believes the Moray is extremely user friendly and important for animal welfare and safety and is a major advancement on what is currently being used by farmers.” Nicole’s entry has won her £2,000 (approximately NZD$3,500), with Moray progressing to the international round of the James Dyson Award competition with a chance to win the grand prize of $50,000 to put towards commercialising her idea. The James Dyson Award is run in 23 countries to recognise emerging designers who have developed inventions that solve real world problems. It is open to university level students (and recent graduates) studying product design, industrial design and engineering. The competition brief is to design something that solves a problem, big or small. A national winner is selected for every country the award runs in, before

going through to the final phase where the international winner is chosen by James Dyson. “The feedback has been phenomenal from individual farmers, and companies. It is great to get this validation from others. I hope that in terms of ease of use for the farmer the Moray will be a huge amount easier to manipulate and there will be a great reduction in repetitive strain. From the animal welfare perspective it will certainly help with productivity,” says Nicole. “My parents are really excited and proud of my accomplishments. I am lucky to have been chosen for the award. It is great having the opportunity to show my product and I am very thankful for the experience.“

Getting the top quality burgers by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Oi! DON’T TXT & DRIVE Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

Well, they have done it with milk, soy milk, now the Frankenstein meat boys are producing burger patties in a lab! I haven’t had a burger since 1997 and that was in Hollister, California. I guessed that there was a meat patty in there somewhere, but it sure as hell had no flavour, and if it did, that flavour was drowned out by the sauce. So, meat-wise there’s no competition; when the cook deals up a homemade burger, made with a 50mm thick pure meat patty, grown on the farm, a few slices of tomato and beetroot, crunchy lettuce and topped off with a couple of dollops of homemade sauce — nothing can compete against that, That’s what the real world wants, that’s what the people want. The artificial world is becoming more and more artificial everyday, which from my perspective, opens up the opportunity

for New Zealand to become the number one, top quality, food producer in the world and this will cover all markets; wine, kiwifruit, stone fruit, avocados, apples, plums etc together with all grass fed milk and all grass fed meat products and heaps of vegetables. We are isolated; we have strong agriculture and horticultural industries. We already have many tourists coming to experience our top quality foods. Our top chefs are leading the way in fine-dining with New Zealand produce. We could easily rank that up to ‘the best food on the planet’. However, to get into the top quality food market, we must first and foremost take out the synthetic, soluble, artificial fertilisers that are impacting on the soil and soil life. At the same time we must stop all use of toxic sprays and drenches. These poisonous products are going directly into our food chain. So it’s time for producers to realign to what is happening and begin setting up a multi-mineral system with help from the micro-organisms to install a full array of minerals to help the plants fix their own immunity to pest and disease. Once the plants have immunity they pass that immunity on to animals and humans. This multi-mineral system has been

around since plants first appeared 460 million years ago and that same system is here today to help install immunity. It’s no big deal, we are only going back to where we came from and when you look at that ‘chemical period’ of say 100 years of spraying plants and then you look at huge natural forests on the planet that have survived and thrived for thousands of years just by having the mineral content to build immunity, there is no comparison. Whoever/whatever put our planet together also put together all the checks and balances to ensure survival of plants, animals and humans. In reality our planet is looking after all life on Earth. Sure it is in flux all the time, with earthquakes, volcanoes, torrid weather etc, but all in all Mother Nature looks after us well. It’s time for us to return the favour and start making choices that have a positive impact for the planet, our grandkids and great, great grandkids. Mixed new season outlook

11

The new season, which started on October 1, is expected to be mixed across beef, lamb and venison. “On beef, we are at an interesting point. Store stock markets appear overheated given where we expect volumes and schedules to end up. Current finished cattle schedules reflect a shortage of supply, which is typical at this time of the year,” says Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton. “Once volumes pick up, and assuming the currency stays at current levels, we believe schedules will retreat to more accurately reflect end-market conditions. A number of commentators are pointing towards a recovery in beef volumes out of Australia and the United States after rebuilding periods, which we will need to be mindful of. China’s demand is increasing, but not at the near-term pace of this competing supply.” Cattle numbers in the coming season are expected to be similar or slightly up on this season, with some of the retentions out of the dairy herd last year expected to boost bull and even heifer numbers. “For lamb, China and US demand is currently strong. In October we head into the European chilled supply season which should hold up farm gate prices. Once through that, we expect the total return from lamb to decrease given the greater frozen mix. We would normally see a $1.00/kg rule of thumb difference in value from the Christmas chilled period to the main part of the season — everything else being equal,” says Mr Hamilton. “We expect lamb numbers to be up this coming season. All the feedback we are receiving is that the North Island in particular has seen good lambing. Volumes may well be up 5–10 per cent and back through 20 million lambs nationally processed next season. “Venison markets remain very strong given the lower supply out of New Zealand. Market prices in Europe and the US remain up on last year, and new premium trim markets in the US are adding to the overall value being realised. We see a continuation of these current market conditions. “We expect venison numbers processed to be similar to the current season at around 280,000–300,000 as the national herd continues to slowly rebuild.”

October 2017  NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Joanna Manson Tucked away in the beautiful Bay of Islands local growers and producers have created the ultimate work-life balance of the Northland lifestyle while selling their produce at the weekly Bay of Islands Farmers Markets in Kerikeri and Paihia since 2004.

E

arly each Sunday morning, market coordinator Leanne Hart is first at the post office car park on Kerikeri’s Hobson Avenue. Her trailer is filled with gazebos, tables, chairs and signs. She greets all the stallholders as they arrive to assemble their stalls. Growers and producers travel from as far north as Karikari Peninsula, Hikurangi to Dargaville and Mangawhai to attend the two BOI markets. As both the markets are seasonal and produce driven, the number of stalls varies throughout the year. The Kerikeri

market ranges from 19–35 stallholders and in high season, Paihia can get up to 22 stallholders. Although these venues are outdoors, stallholders continue to run whether it is raining, hailing or shining. Leanne says cancelling the markets is very rare. “Even in the worst conditions, we still have loyal customers who turn up and we all make the most of our time together!” The Paihia market is situated in a unique spot overlooking the Village Green. During summer, it becomes a tourist attraction with the many visitors

passing through town or catching the ferry over from Russell. “Stalls vary in both Kerikeri and Paihia. On average 70% of our specialised Kerikeri stalls also form part of the Paihia BOI Farmers Market every Thursday from 1–4pm. The balance of the Paihia stalls comprise permanent and seasonal growers who add the variety and richness of local produce.” Leanne also says the BOI Farmers Markets are different because they are authentic farmers’ markets which means all stallholders are the growers or producers of the product they sell. “We help to support local growers and produce providers. They prove the concept of a sustainable lifestyle, with a strong focus on locally grown food. This ethos motivates our stallholders to attend each week no matter the weather, and comes from the strong passion for what they do.” One longstanding stallholder attending both markets each week is Helen Robertson with Puriri Ridge free range eggs. Helen’s hens graze in paddocks all year round with access to dry sheltered houses on the family’s 150-acre dry-stock and free range farm. “We originally started supplying my sister at the market and then we took over the whole thing — we’ve been doing it for 13 years, and have been at the market ourselves as stallholders for a few years now.” Helen says attending the markets is a good opportunity to get off the farm and socialise with visitors as well as her regular and loyal customers. “Our business is family run and we

Greg and Debbie are well known for providing some of Northland’s best homemade bread in their on-site bakehouse. All their breads are prepared from scratch and 90% of their loaves are sugar-free. In preparation for the Kerikeri market, Fluteys start baking around 1.30pm Saturday, finishing around 5:30 am Sunday morning. This allows just enough time to make the one and a half hour drive to Kerikeri.

Although each market is special. Leanne says visitors are guaranteed to be greeted by the same happy, helpful and welcoming personalities behind each stall. She says operating as an authentic farmers’ market connects people to the knowledge of where their food comes from — this creates a sense of local food identity. Improving joints

(Part 2) A recent client had been affected by osteoarthritis in his hips and shoulders. We created a personalised joint health programme that included supplements that can help promote healing in arthritic joints. After speaking with him today he said that he is mostly symptom free. The real hero however is not so much the dietary changes and supplements but his body’s own healing processes. All disease starts with changes to cell functions. If this is left unchecked it can lead to tissue damage and eventually to disease. Our bodies have incredible healing properties that can become overwhelmed by a disease process. While physical damage to joints can cause arthritis it is important to see it as a real disease and not just wear and tear. Joint cartilage appears as tough lifeless tissue. A closer look reveals something quite different. Cartilage matrix is secreted by specialised living cells called chondrocytes. These cells maintain small pieces of cartilage. Anything that negatively affects chondrocytes will eventually damage cartilage. Lose enough cartilage and you have osteoarthritis. Chondrocytes can become damaged

by several processes. Firstly free radicals can damage them to the point that they cannot function properly. If left unprotected by antioxidants the chondrocytes will die and the piece of cartilage it maintained will eventually be lost. Secondly, corrosive enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) attack the collagen matrix of cartilage, and thirdly unwanted inflammation can damage chondrocytes. What we need to do is to protect chondrocytes, reduce inflammation, reduce free radical activity and reduce MMP activity. What this does is to allow our natural cartilage healing processes to spring to life. The result is less pain and improved mobility. The answer is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dense diet. We then add anti-inflammatory supplements that can help restore joint healing processes. Please contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Copper levels and side effects by Erica Faber, Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados

Copper-based fungicides are an effective means of improving packouts and returns by controlling fungal diseases such as anthracnose, post-harvest rots etc. Until alternative, effective controls are found, it seems they are our only option. So, what can we as growers do to ensure we try to minimise negative side effects? Excessive copper can contribute to poorer performance and yield in avocados as it can affect the uptake of phosphorus, zinc, manganese and iron, resulting in low levels of these nutrients within the plant. High levels of copper have also been found to inhibit root growth as well as have an adverse effect on beneficial fungi (which suppress phytophthora), bacteria, protozoa and earthworms. The following are some suggestions for avoiding elevated levels of copper and their side effects within our orchards. By managing orchard sanitation, we can reduce the source of fungal inoculum. Chipping or mulching the old prunings and removing windfall fruit from the orchard floor is an essential practice. This will lower the incidence of anthracnose and post-harvest rots and will reduce the amount of copper sprays eventually required. Pruning also plays an integral part by allowing better air movement throughout the canopy. Calcium sprays onto young developing fruit will be absorbed by the fruit and ensure improved fruit quality as well as

strengthened cell walls more resilient to penetration of the fungal hyphae as well as post-harvest bruising. Remember though that boron also affects calcium absorption, so this needs to be in balance for the calcium to be effective. Limit the copper ion concentration on plant surfaces by using copper products that are relatively insoluble in water, ie fixed copper. Soluble coppers erode faster and require more frequent applications as they are less persistent. Less soluble coppers are more persistent and release a supply of copper ions for a longer period of time. Copper can accumulate to high levels on plant tissue when sprayed repeatedly to cover new growth during periods of no rain. In this situation, after a rain event, a large amount of copper ions may be released leading to phytotoxicity or contamination of the soil. Timing copper sprays to conditions of spore release and conducive weather conditions will ensure copper is only sprayed when it will be effective and thereby reduce sprays that are ineffective and only add to unnecessary copper excesses. Application of humates also ‘stabilises’ excess copper in the soil.

New Zealand’s agricultural contractors are hard at work this spring taking care of those big jobs on the farm which have often become too large or too specialised for individual farmers to handle alone. In years past the average Kiwi farmer relied on four-legged horsepower and a

suite of simple machines and hand tools to run every aspect of the operation. But as technology has increased and science has made farming more intensive, contractors have stepped in to fulfill many specialist roles in the seasonal cultivation of the land. This is never more apparent than in the spring, when big machinery is often seen working its way across the land. The cost inherent in the complex, custom-built machinery used for such tasks is now beyond the reach of many farmers. Their answer is calling in specialists. They come with the advantage of indepth knowledge and lowered overheads for farmers. It’s sound economic sense to hire in a contractor with a huge silage wagon coupled to a 200-horsepower-plus tractor, rather than purchasing the same machinery and having it lie idle in the barn over the winter. Good contractors know their area of expertise well, and are trusted by their clients to take care of the big

jobs, leaving farmers free to attend to other aspects of their business. Dams, effluent ponds, roads, races, pads and even the sites for new sheds and homes are all prepared by specialists. Many contractors have their own limerock quarries for just this purpose. A key role in modern agribusiness is played by science — and at the forefront of agricultural chemistry are those professionals who maintain the correct nutrient balance in the soil to guarantee fertile crops. Just as important as the heavy machinery which tills the fields is what goes in before the seeds are sown, and it’s standard practice for fert companies to send representatives versed in soil science around to visit their customers and draw up detailed fertiliser spreading maps. Today in Northland there is a thriving sector of the agricultural industry — one which is sure to become even more vital to the Kiwi economy as farming becomes more intensive, more scientific and more reliant on cuttingedge machinery technology.

Staying safe on the job With the start of Daylight Saving WorkSafe New Zealand has suggested now is the time to check your sleep schedule to ensure you’re getting the right amount of sleep to keep both yourself and others safe. Agricultural contracting relies heavily on the weather and so does the farmer who more often than not, will need to prepare the ground beforehand. When a fine spell hits the pressure is on for both to complete the task at hand. Often the farmers are out later due to the extra hours of daylight to prepare paddocks before crop or to get the last of the silage completed before the rain shows itself. The contractors are wary of the list of farms they need to service within a tight timeframe. As a result the pressure can easily amount to stress and working big days leading to tiredness. With large machinery involved it isn’t a great combination. “People who are tired and fatigued are 30% more likely to have an accident. Both businesses and workers have a responsibility to manage fatigue and the risks that arise from it,” says WorkSafe chief executive Nicole Rosie. “Work and personal demands can often make it difficult to get the sleep

we need to function safely throughout the day,” Ms Rosie said. WorkSafe has a fatigue quick guide with information for businesses and workers to explain their respective responsibilities to manage fatigue. Fatigue is a work-related health risk if it reduces our ability and alertness to work safely and effectively. It can affect people’s feeling of wellness and wellbeing and impact productivity. It can also lead to safety incidents. This may lead to errors and an increase in workplace health and safety incidents, with potentially serious consequences for both workers and businesses. “According to our 2015 Health and Safety Attitudes and Behaviour Survey, 43% of workers in sectors with a high risk of injuries and fatalities reported working when overtired,” Ms Rosie said. WorkSafe is currently working with other regulators including the New Zealand Transport Agency, Civil Aviation Authority and Maritime New Zealand to look at ways to better support workers

Aerial and ground sprayers can protect bees from unintended exposure to agrichemicals just by following some simple rules. Responsible use of products is the initiative behind the ‘bee responsible campaign’ by Agcarm, New Zealand Aviation in Agriculture, and Rural Contractors New Zealand. “Bees are extremely good pollinators of crops, so contribute substantially to New Zealand’s multi-billion dollar agricultural economy,” says Agcarm chief executive Mark Ross. He says that agrichemicals are vital for ensuring the security of our food supply and, when used responsibly, “pose no threat to our bee population.” But “we must remain vigilant and address any potential risks to our bees.” The campaign was launched in September to coincide with Bee Aware Month as well as the peak sale of agrichemicals. “Although the message is always relevant,” says Mr Ross. “It’s important for manufacturers’ of agrichemicals to

AG CONTRACTORS BUSINESS PROFILE

Ryan Thomas Ag Contracting

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

by Joanna Manson

Ryan Thomas Ag Contracting has been in business for around 14 years, originally starting with just a tractor and fertiliser spreader, and expanding staff, services and machinery over the years. Based in Ohaeawai they are central to the Bay of Islands and secure jobs from Hikurangi to the far north. Now Ryan and the family business has seven tractors, two forage harvesters and a bulk truck and trailer for fertiliser and metal cartage. “We’ve grown the business to have a full rounded season which is kicking off now and weather depending, we’ll work through until May. The season starts off with spring fertiliser and cropping, which includes maize chicory and turnips. It then rolls into silage both pit and bales for which we run three balers — a round, square and conventional. The season finishes up with maize harvest and regressing.” Ryan and the team also do maize cultivation and planting. Most recently they added a portable weigh bridge to their collection of machinery for weighing grass silage and maize, “so everyone has an accurate measurement of how much supplement they have got. We felt there was a call for it with a lot of new farmers moving into the area asking for it as a service.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

Ryan Thomas owner and operator of Ryan Thomas Ag Contracting

“From a big job to a small job we can accommodate all. We run a fairly big team. My dad works for me and some cousins — it’s become a family business.” Ryan has four permanent staff and employs an extra four people over the busy summer season. His wife Kelly takes care of the paperwork and administration side of the business as well as health and safety making sure the business complies with the ever important OSH

regulations. With the spring weather finally showing itself, maize planting will keep the team busy over the next month plus the spreading of spring fertilisers. “Our business is a one stop shop — we can do everything that’s required through one firm.” Ryan says looking after the client is always a priority, “I’m happy with the size of the business, however my aim over the next few years is to upgrade gear and make things more efficient.”

Next government ‘needs forestry focus’

L I G N AT O R Forest harvesting, forest advisors, tree buyers

The forest industry says when a new government emerges from coalition talks, it needs to put a much greater focus on forestry particularly with direct government planting.

Contact us for all your forestry needs or a free appraisal on your wood, big or small.

Forest Owners Association president Peter Clark says this can be in consulation with iwi and it is also vital to encourage other investors and farmers to plant out forests. He says there are potentially many different ways to structure incentives for more afforestation and the Emissions Trading Scheme is still a potentially powerful instrument for enabling the government to meet its Paris Agreement commitments on climate change. “ETS clearly needs change, but the scheme never has been and never will be enough to meet the challenge of increased afforestation by itself.” “Other critical components are leading by example, enhancing training and recruitment, providing extension services for forest management, introducing equitable rules between different land uses, conducting long term planning and getting an urgent start to major afforestation. The government says it intends to use an expansion of

New Zealand’s plantation forest area through the ETS to sequester carbon and so help New Zealand meet its Paris Agreement commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mr Clark says the forest industry accepts the direction of the recent London based Vivid Economics Report that the New Zealand plantation forest estate would have to expand by up to 1.5 million hectares for New Zealand to meet its Paris targets, rather than spending billions on offshore carbon credits to try to achieve that result. “The government can take a lead in getting trees into the ground itself. It is difficult for iwi, drystock farmers and forest companies to take the government’s position on more trees seriously when the government ignores the opportunity of its own agencies and landholding to show how it can be done, at least in the initial stages.” he says. “Some local government land would be suitable as well, and I’ve noticed local government leaders have just

called for what they term ‘an urgent need for responsive leadership and a holistic approach to climate change.’” He believes there needs to be more

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials. Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

FORESTRY effort to attract new recruits into the industry and getting them trained. “We are as much to blame as government in neglecting this area. We have just left it to individual companies to organise training and so we are addressing that ourselves now at a more collaborative level. If we don’t get new and trained workers we will find our industry seriously short of the workforce we need in future.” “For farmers contemplating planting trees we consider the government should make it easier for these farmers to receive the right advice on whether to plant trees in the first place, where to plant them and how to look after them. Our experience is that too many farmers make an investment in trees, which is a land use commitment for nearly three decades, and then ruin it, by, for instance, planting trees with inferior genetics or where they can’t construct a road access to get the logs out.” “Next there are different sets of rules, at both national and local government level in particular, on what different land uses and discharges are acceptable. It’s not just taxing greenhouse gas discharges through ETS, that is important, but having the same rules for everyone when they discharge into water, be the land use forestry, dairy farming or horticulture.” “In a similar vein, and directly applicable to the ETS, the government needs to acknowledge that all the carbon in a tree is not immediately lost when a tree is harvested. So that means the carbon liability at harvesting can be deferred to account for some carbon stored in furniture and buildings for decades to come.” If forests are to expand then the infrastructure has to be

Pine Tree removal large or small blocks, shelter belts and heavy leaners. Please contact Shawn on: 09 946 0744 or 027 820 9725 planned and enabled at the same time. “The infrastructure in some regions, such as East Coast, is struggling to cope with the present volume of logs being transported. If the total forest estate is to be nearly doubled in the next few years, then we need governmentled planning and potentially legislative change for constructing or facilitating road, rail, and port infrastructure.” “If we see significant development in most of these areas, then I’m convinced will send signals to timber processors they can be confident in investing in efficiencies and modernising to utilise an increased timber resource and meet the demand for processed timber products for domestic and export consumption. There doesn’t need to be an export tax or export licences to achieve this.” “We have to wait until next year before the current ETS review reports back to the minister and for the Productivity

Commission enquiry into a Low Emissions Economy. In the meantime, no extra trees are being planted. The age of a tree is critical in the sums to work out whether New Zealand will reach the 2030 target. A 12-year-old radiata pine, for instance, locks up six times the amount of carbon a six-year-old pine will. While we appreciate the need to have robust reviews, some early signals on the direction of travel could encourage planting in 2018 or 2019 rather than delaying that decision until 2020 or beyond.”

Art‘n’Tartan revisited

by Anna Harding

This labour weekend, Waipu will be holding an Art’nTartan Revisited exhibition, at the Celtic Barn, Caledonian Park.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

The exhibition is a spin-off from the Art’nTartan Wearable Art contest and show held annually in July. It’s said to be Northland’s answer to Wellington’s World Of Wearable Art, bringing contestants and visitors from far and wide. “Those people lucky enough to get tickets to see the show often express their wish to view the costumes at close hand and the exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to do just that. The cream of the artworks will be showcased, including the winners of each individual section of the contest,” said Art’n’Tartan publicist, Sue Welford. “It’s hoped that many of the artists will also be on hand to chat to visitors and explain how their designs were made, the materials used, and the many hours of work involved in their masterpiece.” The exhibition has been designed by Helen Finlayson who has a background in design and has worked for Auckland Art Museum. Also at the exhibition, entry forms, dates and details for next years show, will be available. With the use of tartan as a rule in most categories, next year’s have already been confirmed; Taonga — “the treasures and taonga of Aotearoa.” Migration nation — “take inspiration from any aspect of the social force that is migration.” Frost and flame — “create

a wearable artwork that is entirely red and white on all its visible surfaces.” Scottish surreal — “create a daring unconventional avant-garde work.” Crowning glory — “create a marvellous piece of millinery or a captivating and creative crown.” The Shed — “build it, weld it, construct it.” There are also two UV light categories — Illumination creation — “use trickery and surprise to create a mysterious and illuminating moment on stage.”

Masks in wonderland, a children’s section for years 1-8 — “create a glowin-the-dark wild thing, a creature of your own invention, or inspired by your favourite storybook.” “Those artists who have entered the contest in the past know that it’s never too early to begin planning for next year,” said Sue. Entry to the revisited exhibition will be gold coin donation. It runs from 10am-3pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22.

The sky’s the limit The Dargaville Aero Club offers one of the most cost-effective ways in New Zealand to learn to fly and enjoy the freedom of the skies. Established more than half a century ago, the club is more active than ever thanks to daily operation, competitive pricing, a fleet of modern and fuel-efficient two-seat aeroplanes, good facilities, plus a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Thanks to a band of dedicated and experienced flight instructors, who freely give their time to training, the hourly cost for the aircraft is only $120. This is an affordable rate that attracts students from not only Kaipara and Northland, but the greater Auckland area and as far away as Wellington. Basic training is usually conducted in the high-wing Fly Synthesis Storch (stork), a lively and sturdy carbon-fibre design from Italy. From the same factory molds, the sleek low-wing Texan is a popular choice for many pilots. Adding spice to the mix is a German manufactured MTOsport Eagle, which has attracted a host of newcomers and qualified fixed-wing pilots to the delights of autogyro flying. “We have something to suit everyone,”

says veteran pilot and chief flight instructor Murray Foster. Once qualified, club pilots are able to fly the aircraft anywhere in New Zealand at the same low hourly rate. For those thirsting for a no-obligation taste of sport flying, the club offers local trial flights priced at $60 for 30 minutes and $120 for an hour. With an instructor on board, participants have a chance to take the controls. Murray notes that these are popular gift ideas for both young and old, and those in between, and that the flight experience is expressly designed to make the neophyte aviator feel comfortable. “We frequently convert the experience into a sign up for lessons,” says Murray. The Dargaville Aero Club also has a social side, with fly-in and open house events, and every Saturday a cooked lunch is prepared by club members. Wellknown throughout the flying community, these activities are also open to the public. “It’s very friendly and everyone is welcome.” Contact Murray Foster on 027 478 4308 or 09 439 8024.

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Building primary industry by Andy Bryenton

In the earliest days of farming and forestry in New Zealand the hard work was undertaken by manpower alone. A small steadholding was as much as many pioneers could manage. The forests rung to the sound of axes and bullocks pulled the logs to rivers where they would be floated to the mills. Hilly country was of little use as it could not be treated with fertiliser. And the average dairy herd was diminutive by modern standards. Even ploughing a field was a huge task, undertaken with the help of powerful Clydesdale horses. All this began to change with the advent of technology, and with this change came the specialised professions which we now recognise as our rural contractors. The first such change came in the 1860s, when the traction engine first reached our shores, bringing with it the ability to plough with a ‘shuttle’ system, to mill logs in situ using its belt drive, or even to process wool. The engineers who ran these hissing behemoths were the first dedicated contractors on the scene. The first hay baler was invented in 1874 by Cyrus McCormick, leading to an evolution in such machines which

culminates in today’s round balers — some towed behind modern tractors carrying McCormick’s name! Taking to the air to spread fertiliser and seeds was pioneered right here in New Zealand, initially by balloon, but after World War Two a bunch of daring aviators took to the skies in planes such as the Tiger Moth to break in hilly land. Their successors now ensure that farms can thrive even in adverse conditions. It was the advent of hydraulics, and the powerful diesels which drive them, which really changed the game.

American engineer Harry Vickers is said to be the ‘father’ of hydraulic technology, helping develop the systems which now drive diggers and excavators, logging machines and many agricultural implements. Without these innovations — and the men who pioneered them — farming in New Zealand may still be on a small and relatively unproductive scale. With them — and with the contractors who put technology to work in the primary sector — we can look forward to a profitable future.

Looking out for the contractors Rural Contractors New Zealand (RCNZ) is the only national association and leading advocate for rural contractors in New Zealand. As well as monitoring central and local government policies, plans and proposals, RCNZ maintains close relations and lobby’s with a wide range of organisations, government departments and other national bodies on behalf of its members. They represent the interests of members and contractors involved in all aspects of the industry such as; cultivation and planting, harvesting of crops, drainage, land development, fencing, landscaping, direct drilling, chemical application and sheep dipping. They operate via a constitution, with a national board of eight members elected annually. Steve Levet from Wellsford, is currently the association’s president. The country is divided into four zones and each zone elects two board members by postal ballot. RCNZ also employs part-time chief executive Roger Parton, who is based in Wellington. RCNZ have a website full of information such as the board members and the chief executive’s contact details, membership details and a list of over 1,000 contractors around the country. The association also supports and promotes training and education in the industry. You can find information

and links to training provider ‘Connexis New Zealand’ on their website. Connexis provide nationally recognised qualifications in the infrastructure sector, of which rural contracting is a part. Their qualifications are developed with the industry, for the industry and are constantly evolving, delivering an ideal mix of relevant theory and real world practice. RCNZ is committed to its members providing the best service possible to their clients. Therefore they provide registration and accreditation to contractors, ensuring clients receive the best available service and contractors who have achieved various accreditations are recognised. Registered contractor’s undergo an independent audit, to ensure that they are meeting statutory and regulatory responsibilities. This process reduces their client’s risk and minimises their exposure to liability in areas such as employment, health and safety. The audit process is undertaken every three years and for contractors who operate their business properly, they shouldn’t have a hard time complying. Visit www.ruralcontractors.org.nz

MERGE LIKE A ZIP DRIVE SAFELY

Around the yard, the cowshed and even the homestead, there are jobs which require attention to make the season flow smoothly, and just like the core business of producing bumper harvests and maintaining a healthy herd or flock, it’s often best to call in the professionals for these tasks as well. With cropping and harvesting for example, make sure you choose a reliable contractor with well-maintained equipment. Make sure that they are prepared to vary chop length and processor settings if crops are too wet or too dry. Book them as soon as your crop is in the ground and keep in

touch with your contractor as your crop nears maturity. When it comes to spreading fertilizer, a high quality fertilizer is important, but so is how you spread it. The nutrients have to be spread accurately and evenly and at the right rate, across the whole spreader width. To make the right fertilizer choice, get your soil analyzed to help decide which fertilizer is most appropriate for your crop’s needs. Having a contractor with the latest technology, like a GPS guidance and a computerised auto adjusting spread rate, you can be sure they’ll spread your fertiliser in

the most efficient and effective way. Furthermore, check that your contractor is a member of organizations such as Rural Contractors New Zealand (RCNZ) or the New Zealand Master Contractors Inc (NZCMI). These organisations were formed with the contractor and customer in mind, and they work hard to provide employers with a reliable, skilled and professional contractors. They have things like insurance and regularly updated training schemes to ensure their members are kept up to date. Their websites also have directories with thousands of New Zealand contractors listed.

ADVERTORIAL

Compost is the way to go If I told you that composting toilets were being used in boats, caravans, motorhomes and tiny houses around the country you would probably say - Pooh! Many kiwis have, at some time or other been hiking through our wonderful national parks network, staying in DOC huts along the way. We have encountered the bush version of the composting toilet. The composting toilets that DOC employ are essentially a vented “long drop” into which we are required to throw a handful of dried leaf litter to assist the composting process. They aren’t always pleasant to be around, so yes pooh is understandable. But just like so many other commodities that we use in our day-to-day lives, composting toilets have evolved and they don’t smell. One of their key features is that they use no water. It is often said that water is the new oil. The increasing demand on the available water resource is forcing a new focus on the economics within both the horticultural and agricultural communities, both here in NZ and world-wide. Each kilogram of beef or lamb and each ear of corn or bag of tomatoes has a “litres of water” production cost

that has to be justified when water is becoming less attainable and therefore more expensive. Thankfully, the water used in food production is mainly sourced from our natural aquifers - dams or streams fed by rainfall or snowmelt. The water supplied to our towns and cities is much more expensive. Think of the dams and pump stations employed to capture it. Then there is the huge cost of installing and maintaining the pipe network that gets it to the treatment plant for the injection of the chemicals and cleaners the authorities say we need. More piping gets the treated water to our gate, and to our taps, showers and toilets. Alas, each year, each one of us presses the flush button and consigns on average, 6,500 litres of this very expensive treated water to a journey down more pipes, through more pumps, to another treatment plant and out to sea. DAIRYING/EFFLUENT ADVERTORIAL

Calcium is vital to growth Calcium is the answer to pest and disease control and fruit quality, shelf life and storage ability. Calcium’s role in plant nutrition is so overlooked it’s costing growers and consumers millions of dollars in fungicide/pesticide use and produce storage problems. There are also human health complications brought about by the consumption of chemical pesticide and fungicide cocktail combinations and further complicated by low mineral intakes. We should not confuse the role of important soil amendments such as lime or gypsum with the overwhelming need for water soluble calcium by high value crops. They are both critically important but are two separate issues. Calcium fertilisation of many crops should not

be confused with the actual calcium requirements of a crop. For example potatoes and apples require 90% of their calcium during budding for potatoes and 4-6 weeks after full blossom for apples — this cannot be achieved by the application of agricultural lime — it does not release anywhere near the calcium requirements for a plant when it requires it. Most times calcium fertilisation is only considered when a deficiency is evident. Classic deficient symptoms are death of growing tips, abnormal dark foliage, premature shedding of buds and flowers, and weakened stems — quite often confused with a potassium deficiency but the problem is a plant available calcium issue.

Fusarium oxysporum activity, which is a fungal pathogen which causes crown rot in tomatoes, it also severely reduced pythium blight and root rot in grasses and citrus. Nitrogen use efficiency — Kansas State University and Tennessee University conducted trials to look at the efficiency of different nitrogen fertilisers, the conclusion was the addition of water soluble calcium to nitrogen fertilisers like urea substantially reduces the nitrogen loss as ammonia volatilisation [nitrogen lost to the air], by approx 33-50%. So nitrogen fertilisers blended with a water soluble form of calcium can achieve an optimum economic yield by reducing the total amount of Nitrogen applied, who wins here — the grower [financially by reduced nitrogen fertiliser costs] and the environment [reduction in nitrate leaching into water courses and underground bore water]. The loser is the chemical company balance sheet Remember, that the surface application of urea requires impeccable timing with rain. It requires 7-9 mm of rain within 36-48hrs of application, or substantial loss of nitrogen occur. For further details contact — Environmental Fertilisers Ltd 0800 867 6737 www.ef.net.nz email — info@ ef.net.nz.

Calcium number one role is cell wall strength and thickness, which is critical for strong structure rigidity within the pectin polysaccharide matrix. The rapid uptake can only be supplied by the application of water soluble forms of calcium and timing is everything. Many bacteria and fungi [pathogenic] infect plant tissue by producing enzymes that dissolve the middle lamella, two of these enzymes are polyglacturonases and pectolytic enzymes like pectate transeliminase. Recent trials — showed the raising of bean leaf Ca levels from 0.4% where 100% of the plants were infected and decayed within six days, to 3.4% resulting in the total illumination Erwiana infections. Erwinia bacteria affect a large range of vegetable crops and are responsible for storage rot in potato tubers. In another trial Calcium Bean leaf tissue content[1.06%] was replaced with potassium, and the leaf tissue content for potassium was raised from 1.44% to 4.89% and the Calcium content was reduced from 1.06% to 0.18%, the infection rating for botrytis went from slight to severe. This was also evident in lettuces. In another trial the application of soluble calcium [not agricultural lime, gypsum etc] during fertigation reduced

Uncommon sense Is this a confession? At last there is a change on the horizon. One of our major fertiliser companies has stepped up to the plate to offer a helping hand to save our rivers and streams from future pollution. Of course this would be like putting the handbrake on a fully laden logging truck on a downward slope. With the unquestionable evidence that these NPK fertiliser companies are largely to blame for this mess, they are running out of road. To keep their foot on the accelerator is not a viable alternative. I applaud the CEO for joining the team. Although there is an utterance from this committed team to stop the pollution, the answers of how to do it will need to be found. The current science is failing the environmental futures test and the two large NPK fertiliser companies who are applying this outdated science are failing the majority of the farmers of New Zealand. Although farmers are the focus of the attacks from environmentalists on water pollution, the fault lies with the two large NPK fertiliser companies who provide a specialist service and sell the fertiliser to 95% of our farmers who are following their advice. Because soil fertility is so specialised these companies have been getting away with focussing on sales rather than honest advice and honest science. Evidence of this is the propaganda which has led to the acceptance that superphosphate and urea grow grass. This is so entrenched in farmers’ minds that a lot of fertiliser applied is carried on the back of superphosphate. If you need K and S a likely brew could be potassic sulphur super. If you needed Mg a likely product would be surpentine super or if your budget is tight Super 10 would do the job. A modern change lately is the use of DAP which is a brilliant product to deliver soluble phosphate which is particularly efficient for cropping. Research has

proven that it will not lift phosphate reserves in the soil unless applied in heavy applications. Where soil phosphate levels are already adequate, (30+ Olsen P), to use super phosphate as a carrier is wasting farmers’ money and only helping fertiliser companies increase their sales and profits, and the excess is polluting our rivers and streams. A soil nutrient which is being used up with every tanker load of milk leaving the farm is calcium. Research has shown that an average dairy farm would need 300kg of lime per hectare per year to keep up with what is leaving the farm as milk. Lime would therefore be a much more cost effective carrier for elements which are essential like potassium, magnesium, sulphur and trace elements. Another fallacy is the acceptance that pH should be 5.8 to 6.0. A scientific table showing the availability of nutrients at differing pH levels illustrate that phosphate is twice as available at pH 6.3 compared to the availability of phosphate at 5.8pH. This

C&C Contract Electrical Dargaville

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy is real scientific evidence that farmers have been taken for a ride. So to increase your current phosphate levels just move your pH from 5.8 to 6.3. Your soil phosphates will actually increase without applying any phosphate. There are two points to this picture I have painted. 1. Superphosphate, DAP and urea are all water soluble. If these products are applied in excess where do you think they will end up? 2. To stop the cause of the pollution, not only will these water soluble products need to be stopped but the NPK trained specialists will need reprogramming. To change the direction of such an entrenched system won’t be easy for these chemical NPK companies or the farmers who follow them. For real science with integrity which will save money and grow more grass, ring me. David Law, Forward Farming, 027 490 9896.

POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys? Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

bred twins, weigh the lambs at weaning, and the wool from their first shearing,” said Tony. “He took the mystique out of breeding. I was the first farmer to apply Al’s methods and that was the start of modern breeding techniques that have transformed the industry. “I came from a very conservative farming family and my father gave me 100 stud ewes in 1948 because he wanted me to continue farming. LIVESTOCK sheep trimmer.” The ‘simple logic’ of performance measuring proved irresistible and Robin has a science background and fully backed his decision to use the system. Tony says Al removing the ‘mystique’ was fiercely opposed by the breed societies as they dominated the industry. “The societies did a lot of harm by breeding animals for looks. They were squat, wool-blind and wide-headed, prone to foot rot and 30 per cent of them needed help to have their single lamb. “They ran the ram fairs and conned farmers into thinking only they knew what a good animal looked like. They felt threatened by Al and those who acted on his advice.” By 1961 Tony and Robin had collected enough records for Al and he sent a PHD student, Neil Clarke, from Massey to process the records. “His calculator had wheels and cogs and by the morning we had the first index of lambs based on their productive background. “According to the calculations, the top ram was an ugly brute by the standards of the time.” It had narrow shoulders and a long head and legs. It was very different from most of the stud sheep and they decided to mate the ram to the farm’s commercial ewes. “He was everything we had been taught to reject and wasn’t wool blind. Although 49/60 was a registered ram,

“Water just tastes better out of an Absolute Concrete trough.”

I wasn’t prepared breed him with the registered ewes. We recorded some unregistered ewes which had twins at their first two lambings and put him out with them. “Graeme Hight from Whatawhata Research Station, came to buy rams the next year, and asked for rams bred from 49/60. There were ten of them and he took six and I kept the others. These were the first unregistered rams that I had used.” By the 1980s farmers were putting their top animals into a central flock and making big gains by pooling their resources. “Registered sheep at the time were wool blind and shepherds would have to assist lambing. The sheep had been chosen entirely on their appearance and were like boxes — short in the cannon bone, and wide in the head which was bound to give lambing trouble. They were exactly the wrong thing for the hill country. “A few of us advertised our rams and all hell broke loose. The breed societies tried to ostracize us but our clients stuck by us and during the next 15 years our lambing percentages escalated to 150 per cent and remained there. The stud flocks were only lambing about 90 per cent. “We had the support from ordinary farmers and eventually formed the NZ Romney Development Group. It went on for about 20 years and we were

screening around 150,000 unregistered sheep to the highest performers, and providing rams for 7,000 farms. “Our sheep were hill country sheep, performing under hill country conditions.” Tony’s youngest son John and his wife Paulette are running the Wairunga property now. “They milk friesian cows and rear bobby calves for bull beef. They are going to expand the bull beef side and have reduced the sheep numbers from 2000 to 1000. “Al Ray died in 2009 — he was one of the country’s greatest scientists. I believe the reason our livestock industry is thriving today is due to him. I was very lucky to have been influenced by him.”

The man who created a monster

Integrity and honesty are just a few of the adjectives which came to mind when describing Robin, owner of Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmower Services. There’s no denying it — he has a way with machinery. From the tender age of three, Robin knew that he’d been born to be a mechanic. As a tiny boy, his fondest memory was of standing on his father’s Massey Fergusson at hay-making time, burning his wee feet on the hot transmission and loving every minute of it. So began a life-long passion for all things mechanical. After many years working in the heavy machinery industry, he decided to use the exceptional mechanical skills he’d honed to move into the small engine industry thinking it would be a nice change of pace for him. Little did he know that he would soon become busier than ever. Robin soon discovered that he had a real knack for selling. His knowledge, experience and charisma allow him to see that each customer receives the service, advice and products they genuinely require. Robin’s drive and expertise has seen a small, backwater business morph into a complete monster. Though he is always available to help the guys in the workshop, he spends

most of his time on the shop floor. The expertise and confidence of the team at Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmower Services has attracted so many new and

return customers that they are currently working at the height of their efficiency. The monster that Robin has created is so busy it’s almost uncontrollable.

ADVERTORIAL

A new generation arrives Agriline is introducing a new model to their hugely successful Vigolo mulcher range. The new TDF comes in above the already market leading TST range. Agriline managing director Mike Hamlin has had over 20 years’ experience with mulchers and has used his extensive knowledge of the industry to assist in the design of the new machine to ensure it is ideal for New Zealand conditions. One of the main features of the new TDF range is the high horsepower rating, the single drive model is rated for 220HP and the double drive model is rated for a massive 300HP. Both machines have more belts driving than any other mulcher in the industry, greatly reducing the chance of slipping belts. As bigger tractors are becoming more common Agriline sees these as very important features. The rotor is another important feature. It has a large 273mm rotor giving it excellent strength. A large rotor also gives much better momentum which helps you get through the tough spots without stalling your tractor. The skids on the TDF are designed by Agriline specifically for New Zealand conditions. They are a wide, shaped skid that allows for better floatation that will tend to ride over loose material rather than bunching it up in front. A roller also comes standard on the mulchers above 2.5m wide and is an option on those 2.5m and below. The body on these mulchers is extremely heavily built with everything

strongly braced and gusseted. The inside of the body is lined with hardened steel to protect the outer layer. They have a double row of chains in front for extra protection from objects being fired forwards. All the TDF mulchers have a full length adjustable tailgate with the option of hydraulic control as well. As with most of the Vigolo mulchers they

come fitted standard with triple flails and these will do a brilliant job of any material from grass through to gorse and tree prunings etc. They are very easy to drive, saving fuel and stress on your tractor. Other flail types are available as options. Contact Agriline for more information or to request a demo.

RURAL WHEELS

Rally bred resilience by Andy Bryenton

With warmer weather here many people will be thinking about summer adventures off the beaten track. For those with a love of excitement and power, motocross and off-road bikes exert a magnetic pull this time of year, while for others it’s the promise of dry, winding tarmac that gets the blood pumping. Then again, with initiatives afoot nationwide to get people out there on two wheels, perhaps it’s just ease of parking or fuel economy which appeal. While there are plenty of motorcycles which push the envelope in each of these directions — road-going power, off-road agility and frugal commuter practicality — there’s one which brings them all together into a happy medium. And it does so by approaching from a totally different direction. Honda’s new CRF250L actually has the profile of a working agricultural bike under its sharp panel work — or at least a distillation of all the lessons learned by Honda over decades of building machines that can fulfill multiple roles on the farm. Make no mistake, this is no rural workhorse though. The long suspension travel and high ground clearance, narrow profile for agility and willing 250cc fuel injected single cylinder engine of the CRF250L and its sister bike the CRF350L Rally

may be informed by the all-round reliability of Honda’s farming range, but there’s plenty of spice thrown in from the trophy-winning CRF off-road and enduro lineage as well. The Rally version of the CRF250L goes one better, drawing inspiration from some of Honda’s legendary endurance bikes of old. In the days when the Paris to Dakar rally cut clean through the wilds of Africa, big, high-riding motorcycles duked it out with the 4x4s and trucks of this gruelling race. From such sport bikes like Honda’s NX650 Dominator were born, and now the styling cues of bikes like this — and later adventure models — come together in the Rally spec of the new CRF. With twin headlights, a wind deflector and updated panel work, the Rally looks ready to go

Honda’s CRF250L takes it from the streets to the trail effortlessly

anywhere. Which is no illusion. Both iterations of the CRF250 are made to be learner-accessible, ready for the trail and the highway with just the addition of number plates. It’s a great bike for those who live within equal reach of town and country — an inexpensive commuter that can park in spaces too small even

for many road bikes, plus a fun trail riding machine on the weekends. Have Honda hit the nail on the head? New riders seem convinced, with the fuel injected 250s meeting a great reception over the ditch. And if anything, New Zealand has even more of the kind of terrain the CRF250L was made to tame.
