Back from the brink For the past four and a half years, Monique Bradley has spent every day being reminded she is lucky to be alive. Nearly five years ago the carefree teenager was riding a horse on the beach at Whananaki South with a group of girls when her horse suddenly suffered the anguish of two broken front legs, throwing her from its back and rolling on her as it hit the ground. The pain would have been unimaginable for Monique – however she was knocked unconscious and to this day, remembers nothing from her accident. The memories have been filled in by those who were there, who called for help, and kept her still on the sand while they waited for help to arrive – and help came in the form of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. Due to the horse’s condition and the possibility of it getting a fright from the landing helicopter, the chopper landed further down the beach. The horse was lying just beside where Monique had landed and the risk of it hurting Monique further was a real one, especially if it got a fright from the chopper. All safety precautions were taken, and Monique was soon loaded onto a board and taken in the chopper to Whangarei Hospital. Once she was safely off the beach, her horse had to be euthanised to end its suffering.

On arrival, medical staff determined she had a fractured spine and a brain bleed. She remained unconscious and to this day, her memory only resurfaces about four to five days after the accident. After one week at Whangarei Hospital, Monique was transferred to ABI Brain Rehabilitation in Auckland where she stayed for a month before being finally able to return home. Back in 2015, Monique had already started university, studying to be a teacher, while also riding horses, doing a bit of modelling and coaching horse-riding at a pony club. Following her accident, Monique suffered from the effects of having a traumatic brain injury. This meant initially having to learn to walk, communicate and eat again and saw her struggle with her studies and general wellbeing – each day bringing a reminder of what had happened and what was now a “new normal”. Inner Mongolia Natural Dairy Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China Youran Dairy Group Limited, has agreed to purchase Fonterra’s two farming hubs in Ying and Yutian for $513 million (RMB 2.31 billion). Separately, Fonterra has agreed to sell its 85 per cent interest in its Hangu farm to Beijing Sanyuan Venture Capital Co Ltd, for $42 million (RMB 190 million). Sanyuan has a 15 per cent minority shareholding in the farm and exercised their right of first refusal to purchase Fonterra’s interest. The sales are based on an RMB to NZD conversion rate of 4.5. “In building the farms, Fonterra has demonstrated its commitment to the development of the Chinese dairy industry,” says CEO Miles Hurrell. “We have worked closely with local players, sharing our expertise in farming techniques and animal husbandry, and contributed to the growth of the industry. “We don’t shy away from the fact that establishing farms from scratch in China has been challenging, but our team has successfully developed productive model farms, supplying highquality fresh milk to the local consumer market. It is now time to pass the baton to Youran and Sanyuan to continue the development of these farms. ”The sale of the farms will allow the co-op to prioritise the areas of its business where it has competitive advantages. For the last 18 months, we have been reviewing every part of the business to ensure our assets and investments meet the needs of the coop today. Selling the farms is in line with our decision to focus on our New Zealand farmers’ milk. “China remains one of Fonterra’s most important strategic markets, receiving around a quarter of our production. “Selling the farms will allow us to focus even more on strengthening our Foodservice, Consumer Brands and Ingredients businesses in China. We will do this by bringing the goodness of

New Zealand milk to Chinese customers in innovative ways and continuing to partner with local Chinese companies to do so. Our investment in R&D and application centres in China will support this direction.” Completion of the sale, which is subject to antitrust clearance and other regulatory approvals in China, is expected to occur within this financial year. As previously announced, through the sale process and strategic review of our China Farms, we gained additional information and further insights and, as a result, revised down the valuation of these assets. The transaction value is subject to customary purchase price adjustments and exchange rate movements. Any gains or losses on the sale would be normalised upon completion of the sale. The announced forecast earnings will continue to reflect only the underlying performance of the business. Fonterra expects to use the cash proceeds from the two transactions to pay down debt, as part of its previously announced overall debt reduction programme.

CHILDHOOD CREATES OPPORTUNITY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

TRACEY TOPP GREW UP ON A LARGE SHEEP FARM AND HAS DEVELOPED HER LOVE FOR THE INDUSTRY AND WOOL INTO A SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS.

“G

rowing up in the 1970s to 1990s on a sheep farm was a very special thing,”

says Tracey. “That era was when people were sheep farming on quite substantial farms. As children, we helped with lambing, docking, and other jobs. I was the little lamb girl and during the Christmas holidays, we would be haymaking and shearing. My brother is the third generation to own the farm, and he still has sheep and grazes dairy heifers to support the industry. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. Girls were taught to type and sew and didn’t have a lot of career direction. I travelled overseas and worked in retail. I met my husband and he has a contracting business, so I then worked in his office. “Sixteen years ago, I started looking for decent wool clothing for our two

boys. I asked friends where to buy woollen socks, and they replied ‘you won’t find them’. I was shocked and started phoning manufacturers. None made woollen socks anymore because of the effects synthetic importing had on our home-grown industries. “One factory still had the machinery, but rules and regulations had changed when importing started. It wasn’t viable to manufacture woollen socks anymore. I asked them to make a line for me, and they obliged. My husband shouted me a little square advertisement in a baby magazine and I started Cosy Toes, based from home using a website . “I had to eventually find a new manufacturer and added blankets and merino clothing to the range. I never realised how many people don’t have wool knowledge. “My interest came from my childhood with grandad and father always talking

about wool. There is not much positive information around now, so I started the We Love NZ Wool Facebook page. It is a place to share what is going on in the country and bring everyone interested in wool together. We are spreading good Kiwi stories and the importance of our products to the world to help farmers know that their wool is important. “It is all to help people because life is about relationships. Once you get people talking, it triggers good memories. One story is the pound for a pound. In the 1950s wool boom in New Zealand, the saying is farmers received a pound of money for a pound of wool. We want to remind people sheep farmers are important. Shepherds are hard workers and care for their animals. It would be great to get them back in the foreground of people’s minds. We would love designers to use New Zealand wool more. The processing technology is world-class, and we have a really good reputation here in New Zealand. “Cavalier Bremworth is now solely making strong wool carpets, which is a huge industry boost. Mark Warren runs a large sheep station in Hawke’s Bay and recently published an interesting book called Many a muddy morning. Barbie Cassidy is in her 80s and owns VIP Dog Beds and manufactures beds and pillows out of wool. “The natural fibre is healthier, warmer, flame resistant and breathable. My

granny gave me two single wool blankets when I was two years old and they are still as good as new. “Babies can’t regulate their body temperature so wool blankets are best. Synthetics send microfibres into the waterways with each wash. “The plastic ends up in the ocean, the fish eat it, and we eat the fish. It isn’t good at all. “Having grown up on a sheep farm, was the best upbringing ever. I loved it, and it didn’t matter if it was cold, you still drenched the ewes and always had a dog — we made our own fun. The more pet lambs I had to feed, the better, even though dad’s stress was trying to mother them up. “We learned to drive on a tractor and would get it stuck and dad couldn’t work out how and I loved grand dad’s stories. Coming up with ways to use wool has been a great experience. Working with NZ manufacturers is fantastic. “I aim for a 70 per cent minimum of merino in my products as some items need a small amount of other materials for strength and comfort. Touching one person with our knowledge can make a big difference to our industry. “Farmers connecting together on our We love NZ Wool Facebook page is a great way to get their stories told. We have really good memories and hope children on farms today understand how lucky they are.”

by Ann van Engelen Vicki Traas gained a passion for horse riding at four years old and after a fall from her horse three years ago has a new appreciation for the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service.

“I

am 42 years old, and riding horses has been a lifelong interest. My grandmother encouraged me to take horse riding lessons at four years old when we moved from England to New Zealand,” says Vicki. “I grew up in Kerikeri with school friends living on farms, and I was no stranger to milking and farm work. I wanted to become a veterinarian, but females were not encouraged into the

industry back then. I would go along with our family vet to his call-outs and loved it. My favourite part was surgery and seeing the tissue regrowth. Back then, it was hose and wrap and take off the bad flesh. I also helped with insemination. “My husband and his dad had a citrus orchard in the mid-90s. We grew oranges, tangelos and mandarins and I helped pick and thin. We would count five leaves to one fruit to get an even crop each year. Now he is developing a

Vicki Traas competes in show jumping and is the Kerikeri High School equestrian team coach big kiwifruit orchard for Orangewood. We have three children Juliette, Heidi and Josh. Three years ago, I was riding my new horse, and I came off. It trampled my stomach, and I am very lucky that I wear a helmet, as I also hit my head badly. Without the helmet I probably would have died. “My husband was at work, and thankfully my children were with me. My 13-year-old son Josh phoned for help. An ambulance and rescue chopper were

dispatched. The ambulance took me to the helipad in Kerikeri because they didn’t want the horse to get spooked by the chopper. Both crews were amazing with my children during the whole ordeal.” Vicki was transpor ted to Whangarei Hospital with suspected internal bleeding. “Things were time-critical, and the pilot and paramedic were still calm and reassuring. hospital for a couple of days with bruised kidneys, major concussion and a chipped vertebrae in my neck. I was very lucky. “Having my accident didn’t put me off horses, although it took a long time to get my confidence back. Heather Wilson, the mum of the Wilson sisters from the Keeping up with the Kaimanawas, is a good friend. She took me right back to walking my horse over a pole on the ground to help me regain confidence. I was hypersensitive and would look at a jump, cry and have a panic attack. Heather helped me take it step by step. “We live on a lifestyle block that backs on to a beef unit and often trek through farmland and remote areas. We go to various shows, and you always see ambulance staff and the rescue chopper occasionally. Now, we have a huge appreciation of how important the helicopter is.” A senior English teacher at Kerikeri High School, Vicki also coaches the school equestrian team. “Our daughter Heidi rides with me now. We do horse treks and show jumping. We hope to compete at the Taupo Christmas Classic. Heidi also overcame her confidence issues from my accident. She has started her own pony called Angel, which Vicky Wilson passed on to us, and wants to compete her next year. “The first time I saw a rescue chopper after my accident, I burst into tears. You

never forget the sound of them coming once it has been you and you hope the person onboard is OK. “Rescue-chopper pilot Sue Dinkelacker has established an exclusive club for people rescued by helicopter. I think it is a brilliant idea to raise awareness and funds for the organisation. I encourage all those who have used the service to join.” The Haast’s eagle is the logo, and the club membership commemorates a personal helicopter rescue. “Many different types of helicopters have saved people over the last halfa-century. The club offers a tangible ‘legacy-quality’ collectable inspired by the eagle that snatched Gandalf to safety in the Tolkien stories,” says Sue. “The Haast Club artworks depict the largest eagle ever to have existed in the world, the extinct New Zealand Haast’s eagle, to remind you of your experience. It creates a talking point to share your story while raising funds for New Zealand Rescue Helicopter Trusts.” It doesn’t matter where in the world you were rescued by chopper — you can join the club at Haastclub.com. “I am back in the saddle,” says Vicki. “If I went by ambulance, it would have taken too long. “Our family is so grateful we have the rescue chopper service. I never, ever imagined I would need it. I felt safe and knew I had the best chance of things working out.”

SHEPHERD’S DREAM BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Lana Chrystal was brought up on a dairy farm and knew nothing about shepherding when she was offered experience at Cricklewood Station.

“I

went to boarding school but left half way through year 13 because I really disliked school and living in town,” says Lana. “I worked on my parents’ dairy farm and helped with docking for various people. I helped my dad’s friend at Cricklewood Station for three months learning about sheep farming. A job nearby at Pihanui Station came up, so I applied and started last January. “My dad Clark is a dog triallist, and I was brought up around the sport and have always loved dogs. I loved watching dad work his dogs. His friend gave me a retired Huntaway named Punch when I was 16 years old. “I was really keen to learn to work him and took him to a trial dad was running to help out. Dad and his friends

encouraged me to have a go, and I have never looked back. “It was great having a good experienced dog who worked for me straight away. Punch is more than 10 years old when I started work, and I want him to retire, so dad gave me a trained Huntaway named Syd. He is a smart dog and works to my style. I was also given a heading dog to get started. “I have had a go at shearing but need to do a course. I learned to crutch and dag during weaning at Cricklewood. Shepherding was harder for me to learn because most people go shepherding and mustering first and then dog trial. I had to learn to work my dogs to muster instead of competing. “My heading dog had mustered for years but came from a guy, so she took

Lana encourages other young sheep farmers to get involved in dog trialling as a sport and social event a bit of time to adjust to the tone of my voice. Dad recently gave me a pup, and I broke her in myself. I took a little advice from various people, and each bit helped. We got her chasing and clipped her on a rope, and I would blow a whistle and gently push her down until she sat herself, when I blew the whistle. “At present, the ewes are lambing, and I do the lambing beat checking for any needing help. Sometimes you find

one that is cast. This means they lay down and can’t get back up because they are so fat. We help them to their feet and ensure they are ok. “Pihanui Station is rolling to steepish country, and we do a lot of work on horseback. I prefer mustering on horses as it is easier than with vehicles. My horse Mudguts is four years old, and I recently broke in my first horse, which was a very cool experience. When

If you don’t get given a trained dog, start with one and invest your time in it. My goal is to complete a course with my dog, rather than one my dad trained. If I get a placing, I would feel happier knowing that it was my work. “I have made an awesome career choice even though it is a maledominated industry and my mates are going to university.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL TESTING

“You need to be happy to be by yourself, but you have dogs to break in and horses to keep you busy. It is certainly a lifestyle where your dogs are your mates. “Dog trials start in January, and you can get details from the various Sheep Dog Trial Association Facebook pages. It would be great for other young shepherds to get involved in trials. I got my first placing this year against better competitors. “It was a real boost and made me more confident. It is not about winning — it is about enjoyment.”

Fertiliser is a major farm expense and regular soil testing can help ensure production is not limited by under fertilising or having money wasted by over fertilising. Money is well spent on regular soil testing to ensure the correct nutrients, in the correct forms and in the correct amounts are applied. Knowing the nutrient status of the soil means that nutrients can be prioritised to get the best ‘bang for buck’ when working with a tight budget.

Although soil testing is only a snapshot in time it can: • Indicate deficiencies, imbalances or excess of major nutrients • Measure whether current fertility levels are sufficient enough to maximise plant/crop growth • Monitor trends over time to determine whether the previous fertiliser programme has been successful • Determine liming requirement • Estimate the present and likely future nutrient status of soil • Determine soil characteristics which may help determine the type of fertiliser applied • Create a starting point for a more sustainable fertiliser programme

Growers began harvest mid-August with most of the initial volume coming from earlier maturing orchards in the Far North. Jacob Darling, general manager of group sales and marketing for Darling Group, says that quality assessments on Just Avocados’ arrived fruit have taken place in Australia, China, Taiwan and Thailand with all being positive to date. “It is fantastic to see the outcomes when all our stakeholders have worked hard to reassess the supply chain and our on-orchard practices to ensure we continue to deliver a premium product.” Jacob says the grower services team have put together resources and a howto video to assist growers when making decisions on harvesting after rain. They have also held a workshop and made videos on best practice during harvest to maintain quality. “Last season, an average of 14.3% of damage seen in the reject analyses could have been avoided with the education of harvesters and vigilance at harvest time.” Supporting brand awareness and sales of their avocados in Asia is a new marketing campaign with the tagline, “Family. Fresh. Fun.” It relates to the people/origin, the product characteristics, and the how-to aspects

Jacob says that the long summer drought has affected fruit size. Still, Just Avocados’ innovative pre-packs are mitigating their exposure to the smaller size profile. “Retail pre-pack programmes have commenced for the 2020 season in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, and Australia. My brother still owns that farm,” says Rex. “My old man had a baler and used wire instead of twine. Two brothers sat on either side while I drove the tractors with dad. We were lucky to do 200 bales a day. Nowadays we can do 400 round bales a day, and they are equivalent to 12 bales when I was young. “In 1992, my wife, Colleen and I purchased a dairy farm in Paparoa and an old friend retired. I took over his conventional baling run, and Colleen manages our farm with a 100-acre runoff at Matakohe. “I have a new Kuhn 3135 baler ordered for this season with film wrapping capability. Our customers can do their own mowing, and we can finish it off baling. We are here to help our clients with all their requirements. We also supply bales at times. “Our new round baler is film-on-film capable, but net wrap is still available if wanted. Also, inoculant is applied if required. “Film-on-film wrapping keeps more air out of the bale when transferring from chamber to wrapper and silage is usually of better quality. Amnesty for hazardous waste Health and safety requirements are triggering a move to monthly amnesty days for hazardous substance disposal in Whangarei. The Northland Regional Council advises the amnesty days will allow hazardous waste to be taken to the city’s Re:Sort centre. Experienced regional council waste management staff and a contractor will be on hand to identify substances, sort and store them safely for disposal. “While the overall Kioreroa Roadbased facility is Whangarei District Council-operated, hazardous waste disposal has continued to be managed by NRC,” says regional councillor Jack Craw. “The regional council has operated a hazardous waste collection service for many years in partnership with our Whangarei District counterpart and Northland Waste.” Currently, hazardous waste can be taken to the Re:Sort centre during opening hours. As of Monday, November 2, 2020 this will be transitioning to a designated Tuesday in the month. Ali McHugh, the NRC’s Water and Waste Monitoring manager, says one of the main drivers for the change is that 15 per cent of the containers dropped off at the hazardous waste centre are unlabelled or in poor condition. “With the passing of time, there are fewer of the real nasties of the chemical world and long-banned chemicals like the herbicide 2,4,5-T, organochloride pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls emerging. “There are newer chemicals that need to be handled and disposed of carefully.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

by Andy Bryenton

When it’s time to bale, speed and efficiency are of the utmost importance, allowing more ground to be covered quickly and more bales stacked away before fickle weather deals out its usual blows. Ease of maintenance is key to this efficiency in many situations, and that’s one of the reasons Claas have developed their new Rollant 520 range, replacing the 374 and 375 at Europe’s Agritechnica. Here in New Zealand, the cutting edge of Claas baling technology is represented by their Variant range, which utilises the same kind of advanced engineering as the new metal from the EU. There are multiple options across the range, suitable for farming and contracting operations big and small. The base model of the international Claas range employs a system of stub augers and underfloor tines to convey material into the chamber. However, the Variant in NZ boasts an upgrade to Claas’ Roto Feed technology, boosting intake with its advanced spiral rotor layout. A very popular addition to the range is the Roto Cut system, which employs a series of mechanised knives to cut crop materials before they’re ingested. This optional chopping mechanism has 14 knives, with a theoretical cut length of 70mm. The knives have individual protection against foreign objects to prevent blunting and chipping while at work in the field.

Bale shape and density are under complete control with Claas. It only takes six seconds for a finished bale to be deployed from the back of the implement from the time the door starts to open. That’s a figure more impressive than the drop-top convertible speed of some supercars, during which a uniformly formed, easy-to-handle bale is deposited. Roto Cut knives are automatically deactivated at the end of each bale and automatically cleaned after every fifth bale. aspect Claas has not left to chance; operator comfort. Claas has continued to impress with its bigger, more tech-heavy range of self-wrapping balers, but even the most basic variant of the Variant takes knowledge, which has won a swag of engineering awards, and uses it to make a day baling feed that little bit more efficient and comfortable. How much more so? Well, a talk with the Northland Claas team will soon sort out which Variant is optimum for your farming enterprises. Give them a call soon.

Kiwi farmer beats the world

17

Colin Hawken

Mulching & Farm Project Management

by Andy Bryenton

A kiwi crop farmer is standing by his trusty machinery as the linchpin of his success, as he brings home a Guinness world record for massive arable land production. Eric Watson, from Wakanui near Ashburton, has broken his own Guinness World Record for the highest average wheat yield of 17.398 tonnes a hectare. Working with his wife Maxine, he set the previous record of 16.791 tonnes with feed wheat in 2017. Irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand average about 12 tonnes a hectare. He puts his success down to precision farming, with the right tools. Eric defines ‘precision farming’ in New Zealand in many ways, particularly in his use of machinery and implement technology at the cutting edge. When asked how to win a world record, he’d answer that it comes from making small incremental gains across many facets of the farming business. One example; through a combination of operator control and advanced software, like Case IH’s AFS Harvest Command system, he leaves little to waste on the deep soils of his coastal property. “That new automation; it’s quicker than the human. We always think we can beat computers, but you can’t beat that. The command system knows what to do before you even see it on the screen,” he says. However, it’s less driver-intensive than the machinery of yesteryear. “It does work extremely well. It just takes a bit of getting used to, and

you get a bit bored because you don’t have to do much. You run auto settings, and you’ve just got to sit there.” As a long-time Case IH customer, Eric says the red brand’s latest technology is a sizeable step ahead on one of his original machines, an old International 1460. A favourite feature in his Case IH Axial-Flow 250 Series combine is the CVT rotor drive technology, which increases efficiency and reduces the chance of crop blockage. When you spend as much time in the seat as Eric, it’s a pleasure not having to get out to unblock it.

Eric enjoys a productivity gain, no matter where it comes from. For his recent wheat record, he switched wheat variety and went from solid urea to liquid form to improve spreading. He also swears by using a tracked unit to prevent soil compaction, knowing that soil health is another incremental gain area for maximum growth next cycle. Ever-modest, Eric quietly admits to being a bit blown away by his latest yield gain. “However, you’re always monitoring and trying a few new things, including a different crop as well.”

Leading scientist shifts climate parameters by Andy Bryenton

Farmers and rural contractors economically threatened by laws based on methane and its role in climate change have a new reason for hope, as a leading climate scientist makes calls to downgrade the threat level of this commonly occurring gas. The implications for carbon taxation are enormous. With debate already raging over the balance between reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the necessity for a robust rural economy, the recalculation of the impact of methane on the climate by one of the leading scientists in the field has provided rhetorical ammunition for

ULTRA

the pro-agriculture lobby. Spokesperson for Kiwi agricultural science advocacy group, Facts About Ruminant Methane (FARM), Robin Grieve, says that it is ‘almost unbelievable’ that one of the leading methane scientists in the world, Dr Myles Allen, has adjusted the calculation of methane harm from 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) to a mere seven times. Dr Allen is no climate change denier, and neither is he a poorly informed secondary source. The respected doctor is head of the Climate Dynamics

Science is a fluid process, where theories can be questioned and changed rapidly. Now one of the core problems of climate change has been reassessed, leading to questions for lawmakers

group at the University of Oxford’s Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department. He leads the world in computer simulation modelling of climate change and has won many scientific awards for his work. Now, FARM reports that he’s insisting that the European Union drop the official figure of ‘28 times more potent than CO2’ and accept the new calculation he backs. The implications for Kiwi lawmakers are just as vast, and in an election year, even more, pressing. “That is critical information to New Zealand, where the government and even farming industry groups have accepted the notion that methane is 28 times stronger than CO2,” says Robin Grieve. “The potential cost to farmers to work with this concept was going to be

in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Reducing the ratio by 400% shows just how wrong everyone has been. Yet they were willing to advise policymakers to put farming under huge pressure to conform. Adopting Allen’s proposed system of accounting for methane will slash 26,000 tonnes off New Zealand’s carbon emissions overnight — approximately a 32% reduction.” FARM is demanding the government, the relevant agencies and the industry step back from the whole idea that methane is a significant problem until the science is settled enough to determine whether it is or not. There should be no financial imposition on farmers for ruminant methane emissions based on guesswork and uncertain science, they say.

“Working in partnership with the next government, whoever that is, is a priority and it is pleasing to see parties putting a largely positive vision forward for New Zealand agriculture,” said DairyNZ chair Jim van der Poel. “We welcome the discussion around farming, as dairy farmers are keen to see practical policies on the table. As a food-producing nation, we are at the forefront of free-range farm systems, safe, nutritious food, sustainability and economic value. It is vital we get policies right. “It is good to see the parties discussing key policies to help, and work with, the food and fibre sector and farmers. What will be most helpful to NZ Inc is for any incoming government to sit down after being elected and work through the issues and plans together with the sector and farmers. “DairyNZ is keen to see pragmatic, enduring solutions that will deliver for rural communities, the environment, farm systems and the economy.” Mr van der Poel said some aspects of policy proposals appear particularly valuable including Labour’s support for farm plans and committing funding to help their implementation; and National’s proposal to revisit some regulations, investment in broadband and RMA changes.

Jim van der Poel, DairyNZ chair

An investment in farm plans is valued, as DairyNZ has advocated for Farm Environment Plans and has a target in place. “Through the sector’s Dairy Tomorrow strategy, we have a commitment to have all farms with an environment plan by 2025. This underpins our sector’s efforts to improve the health of rivers and streams, protect biodiversity and reduce emissions. “Increased support to implement farm plans will go some way to helping farmers

deliver on this commitment. Farmers are being impacted by significant regulation and compliance changes, and a revisit proposed by National to water quality and climate change targets has merit to ensure they are grounded in science, fair and achievable. “Many of the concerns we have raised in our recent View from the Cow Shed farmer survey have come through this election, which is encouraging — particularly investing in rural connectivity and reforming the RMA.”

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Promoting professionalism in fencing

When embarking on any project, engaging a professional tends to provide added value. The Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand is the industry body designated to promote high standards and best practice within the fencing industry, and it’s rolling out pathways to gain skills. Fencing Contractors NZ was started in February 2006. It aims to raise the profile and standards of the industry, growing the market for fencing contractors and associated trades, and ensuring good, timely advice. With more than 500 members, it’s a stronglymandated industry group. Recognising the need to encourage workers to the industry and upskill those within it, Fencing Contractors NZ is supporting members through the New Zealand Certificate in Fencing Level 3. A recognised NZQA qualification designed specifically for the fencing industry. This NZQA certificate is also one of the criteria required for the Certified Fencing Contractor certification. Aspirant students must demonstrate industry best practice, compliance and business prowess. To be awarded the certification, the applicant needs to have evidence of a minimum of three years in business, been awarded the NZQA National Certificate in Fencing Level 3. Hold a current First Aid certificate, and formulate a working health and safety plan. There’s also the requirement for an employment contract with staff, a signed declaration stating that they have a high regard for health and safety and employment issues, current public liability insurance, and three client testimonials. As you can see, it’s no easy task to rank among the best. Using a Certified Fencing Contractor gives

Wood fibre futures report bright by Andy Bryenton

It’s been more than a year in process, but September’s New Zealand Wood Fibre Futures Stage One Report identifies those wood processing technologies, which could help drive a high-value and lowcarbon economy. That’s a result worth meticulous research. Te Uru Rakau (Forestry New Zealand) director of sector investment, Jason Wilson, says that the report is focussed on how New Zealand could build on the forestry industry’s current strengths to create a low-carbon future. The report identifies possible alternatives to concrete and steel in construction and posits biofuels made from woody biomass in the energy sector. “We know forests have a big role to play in carbon mitigation, but forestry can play an even bigger role in both the economy and meeting environmental goals if it is used to create new and innovative high-value, low-carbon products including liquid fuels and replacements for coal,” said Mr Wilson. “The questions for New Zealand are; what products do we need the most, what technologies are available to help us create these, and, importantly, how do we attract investment to make it happen?” The senior Forestry NZ spokesperson confirmed that New Zealand is

considered one of the best places in the world to do business and that we have a large stock of Pinus radiata, giving us a comparative advantage. However, he opines that we need to start working with technology investors to produce high-value, low-carbon products. Mr Wilson said the report identified 15 technologies, out of 108

developed globally, that New Zealand could prioritise, and laid out ways to attract investors. “Both biocrude and liquid biofuels are favoured by investors, have the most potential for export, and are being actively developed globally by high-tech firms,” he said, setting the parameters for stage two of the project.

Government out of its depth on water by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

The term ‘nanny state’ comes to mind when examining this government’s policy, and attitude, to New Zealand farmers. Seemingly, they can’t trust farmers to look after their businesses, their communities or the environment. The Jacinda Ardern-ruled government would like us to believe that after years of living in their urban-based academic world, they know how to run farms better than we do. How else could we, or they, explain the recently released Action for Healthy Waterways action plan. The plan imposes a whole new set of rules and regulations on an industry already reeling under Covid-19 and the closure of borders. Even worse, it sends a clear message to the farming community that they [the government] don’t trust us. Let’s set the record straight: New Zealand’s farmers and growers are world leaders at producing high quality, low carbon footprints and sustainable food and fibre. We produce the world’s best animal proteins such as beef, lamb and milk, and our growers are acknowledged as leading producers of kiwifruit, wine, apples and avocados. In other words, we know our stuff. Yet this government insists on putting into law draconian measures that either already exists and are practised by farmers as a matter of common sense or are totally impractical — as any farmer would have told them. Uppermost among them is that farmers who winter graze will require resource consent due to the unworkability of the existing permitted activity conditions. That consent could

cost thousands of dollars and may or may not be approved. Then there is the requirement to keep stock five metres away from any waterway. Really? Moreover, don’t start me on the requirement that any paddock used for intensive winter grazing must be equal to or less than 10 degrees. That, literally and figuratively, comes out of the Flat Earth Society. No, this government is tinkering and tampering with an industry they don’t understand. I say again, don’t trust. Come October 17; they may pay for that.

ADVERTORIAL

Coenzyme Q10 for energy Our mitochondria are our cell engines that take the energy from food and change this into the energy our bodies need. Free radicals can damage delicate cell structures causing less energy to be made. Some diseases can damage mitochondria. Studies show that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome weakens mitochondria resulting in significantly less energy than in healthy people. The result is always tiredness but other symptoms are determined by the type of disease. For example, in MS, mitochondrial changes occur, leading to nerve myelin damage. The first step to improve energy is to add coenzyme Q10. Be aware that most of the CoQ10 on the market is low-cost semi-synthetic material. I prefer high-grade, naturally fermented material. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a good, cheap CoQ10. There are several reasons why some need extra coenzyme Q10. The most common is those taking statin cholesterol-lowering medication. The most common side effects are tiredness, mood issues and muscle weakness and pain. Mostly due to the fact they reduce circulating CoQ10. Interestingly, the maker of the topselling statin in the world holds patents

to combine CoQ10 with statins. They just have never made it. Perhaps this would reduce the financial viability of the drug? Some health problems, especially autoimmune disease, can increase demand for CoQ10. Additionally, our ability to produce sufficient CoQ10 diminishes with age causing tiredness. These help to increase energy output, support flagging energy processes and reduce free radical damage by actively targeting the free radicals that damage delicate energy systems. A combination of a good diet and these beneficial supplements can make a real difference in life quality for those with low energy. Most people feel a difference within a few months. STAY AFLOAT

FISHING, HUNTING AND OUTDOORS BUSINESS PROFILE

The king of spring breaks by Andy Bryenton

As spring warms the waters of the Bay of Islands, stirring up sea life, a natural migration takes place that’s as old as human habitation here. Anglers from around the world, drawn by the crystal waters and teeming fish, come to hunt the elusive big catch, inspired by stories from previous years. This year, the big migration is off. New Zealand really is an island alone, leaving our Aussie neighbours jealousy eyeing the waves and thinking of what might have been. It’s a situation which smart Kiwis are taking advantage of, and one that poses an important question for those reading this publication on the farm. Wouldn’t you rather be fishing? When Steve and Wendy Butler ask, it’s pretty much a rhetorical question. It’s also an invitation, as the couple is the longest-standing charter operators in the Bay of Islands, with more than 40 years’ charter fishing experience. As spring returns, they are keen to get out there and share some exciting fishing with their clients, going after the big, feisty and very tasty yellowtail kingfish. In this endeavour, they have a couple of key advantages; hard-earned expertise and the vessel to go with it. Steve and Wendy’s Earl Grey II is a purpose-built 36-foot sportfish vessel, designed specifically for recreational charter fishing. “Launched in March 2006, we worked closely with naval architect Richard McBride from McBride Design to incorporate ideas and features that can only be gained after years of experience at sea,” says Wendy. “As we travel in similar areas to the scenic cruise boats, this option will also give you a chance to see more of the bay. It’s not unusual for our anglers to be treated to extras such as sightings of dolphins, seals, various ocean birdlife, shark action and even very occasionally a whale on these trips. However, the

Yellowtail kingfish provide a challenge for even the seasoned angler, and there’s no better spot to go after them than the Bay of Islands

focus is very much on producing a great day’s fishing.” That means calling on Steve’s lifelong passion for fishing and the ocean, which was ignited while he was very young fishing the Hibiscus Coast and Hauraki Gulf with his father. He’s patient enough to teach absolute beginners, and skilled enough to find a proper angling challenge for seasoned anglers. As he says: “For the very best fishing experience it is hard to go past the charter targeting yellowtail kingfish with live bait while on anchor — a real adrenaline rush. Pound for pound these game fish have to be one of the greatest fighting fish in the ocean and available in our waters all-year round.” If you deserve a break, come to this angler’s playground and slice of paradise on our east coast. For a memorable adventure on the water, jump aboard the Earl Grey II. Some stress-free, smile-inducing R and R is out there waiting.

Safeguards in dairy law

DAIRY

29

Federated Farmers counts it as a significant win that safeguards will likely be written into the Fonterra constitution for dairy farms changing hands under a succession plan or are in a remote area. The Dairy Industry Restructuring Amendment bill passed its third reading. “While Federated Farmers agreed the original open entry requirements on Fonterra were no longer necessary and will now go by June 2023. Our submission and our sustained advocacy over many months insisted key safeguards remain,” says Feds Dairy chairperson Wayne Langford. Some late changes were added to the DIRA bill through a supplementary order paper, and the end result is that Fonterra has undertaken to give its suppliers surety: • on farm price, • when the farm changes hands under a succession plan, • that for those farms in remote areas, at the end of a valley or with geographical hurdles such as Golden Bay, Kaikoura, milk would still be picked up and no transport differential would apply “Feds worked really hard to get Fonterra to understand and agree on these issues of fairness. We knew that farmers would need. It is our job to do this work so our farmer members can

get on with farming. These provisions are to be written into Fonterra’s constitution, subject to a shareholder vote, something which the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council also pushed for. The co-operative was initially very reluctant about that, so we are pleased our efforts have paid off and that this will now happen. “Generally, we are pleased with other outcomes, and we would particularly like to thank MPI and the Primary Production Committee for recognising Feds’ role as the voice for farmers.” Goodman Fielder will receive up to 350,000 million litres of raw milk from Fonterra suppliers (up from 250,000 million litres) to protect domestic competition. However, the supply will be at a better price. While Feds might have wished the trigger amount to be smaller, Fonterra does not have to supply other independent processors with raw milk if in any three consecutive seasons they received 30 million litres or more from their own suppliers. “The DIRA will be reviewed again in four to six years, which is an aspect we also sought.”

Youth scholarships awarded Silver Fern Farms has announced their Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships recipients for 2020, adding two additional scholarships this year. Imogen Brankin, Jack Monckton, Dan Ryan, Harry Hawkins, Joe Ward, Jazmine Burgess, Leora Werner and Sam Phipps were this year’s winners of the Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships. “The commitment Silver Fern Farms has to develop young people and their careers has become even more important as the red meat industry responds to disruption around the world,” says Silver Fern Farms chief executive, Simon Limmer. In past years the panel of judges has selected six recipients of the Plate to

Pasture Youth Scholarships. This year, due to the exceptional response to this year’s challenge, the scholarships have been extended to an additional two recipients, totalling $40,000. “More than 60 people applied for this year’s scholarships. They were asked to identify outstanding opportunities for the red meat industry in light of the Covid-19 crisis and to share the role they could play in New Zealand’s recovery. “It has been exciting to hear from these young people. From their responses, we can see that there are a real belief and passion from young New Zealanders. They see the red meat industry making a leading contribution to global, sustainable food production. We think they are very deserving of our support. “We have been delighted with this year’s crop of applications and thank all who put forward their ideas. We appreciate the enthusiasm they have shown for sharing their thoughts on the future of our natural grass-fed red meat. “Since 2017, Silver Fern Farms has invested $130,000 to further the careers of young people through the programme. Winners from across New

Zealand are awarded $5,000 to assist with developing their careers and capabilities in the red meat sector. “We want to provide financial support to an even wider group of recipients that better connects our vision to our Plate to Pasture strategy. This year our recipients presented their well-thoughtthrough opportunities for our industry in their applications. “These included the deeper integration of scientific research with the agri-sector, traceability and supply chain management, and how the industry could operate more sustainably.” As part of the process, each of the applicants had their applications supported by a Silver Fern Farms Cooperative Shareholder. The chair of Silver Fern Farms Co-operative, Richard Young, says the process is appreciated by farmers who understand the importance of developing capability in the sector. “The wide range of backgrounds selected demonstrates the importance of diverse food producer roles in recovering from the Covid-19 crisis. The innovative contributions we received give me great confidence in the red meat industry leaders of tomorrow.”

Built from the ground up by Andy Bryenton

The annual roll-out of new models doesn’t mean much for a lot of badges in the auto industry, who satisfy their customers with a bit of a facelift, some extra chrome and perhaps a slight bump in horsepower. Then, there are other machines in constant evolution, where there’s a lot more going on under the skin. One such is the Can-Am Defender HD8, which benefits from a constant loop of customer feedback pouring in from all across the world. That means advice from customers out in boggy mud, sun-baked deserts, steep forested hills and of course, the paddocks of New Zealand farms. All of these people want to get a hard day’s work done, and all of them need slightly different things, leading to the development of a machine, year-by-year, which can tackle them all. The latest iteration is a perfect example. It all starts with the chassis, as most motoring enthusiasts will tell you. A well-sorted chassis means less flex and shake. More rigidity means more precision when steering, especially in tough conditions. Can-Am even uses a different kind of steel alloy, with more hard metal in the mix, to ensure that their Defender range has solid underpinnings. This rigidity means safety when it comes to the cage that protects the driver and passenger as well. Think that a bit of metallurgy can’t make much of a difference? Try filleting a schnapper with a cheap knife or hammering in poorly made nails, then multiply the advantage of real steel up to the size of an entire 4x4. Can-Am was right to invest in the science here.

SMOKE ALARMS The next linkage in the chain is suspension, and the new HD8 deploys a set of torsional trailing A-arms with massive travel, linked up to serious shocks and tyres designed to provide a maximum footprint of grip. Power reaches these extremities via a clever power-steering system and a gearbox with four modes of traction and locking diffs. There’s a setting for mud, snow, grit, gravel, fording streams and lugging loads on the HD8’s wide, tie-down-equipped tray. Motive energy comes from a big, reliable Rotax engine with 50hp and

50 foot-pounds of torque; easy figures to remember. Not that mathematics will worry you when you’re out in the field. The end product, which combines all of these little advancements, wraps around to create a capable and hard-working machine; leaving you with nothing to worry about but choosing the best line to take on the trails.

A lifetime of innovation

FIVE YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT HAS ARRIVED!

$20,865 EX GST

by Andy Bryenton

Sir William (Bill) Hamilton spent a lifetime ahead of the curve, pushing the limits of what brains, courage and creativity could achieve. From his early years in farming, through to big wins as an auto racer, to the invention that would make his name and change boating forever, this was a man for whom sitting still was not an option. Bill left school to manage a station in the South Island and had bought his own land at Irishman Creek, Otago, by the time he was 22. The shallow, braided rivers and deep gorges of this landscape made an impression on the young inventor, who turned the idea of a boat which could master such waters over in his mind, like a stream smoothing down a greenstone boulder. In the meantime his active intellect set to crafting other advancements for Irishman Creek Station; his own hydroelectric dam for starters, then an even larger one, built with an earthmoving machine of his own design. During these years Bill had also been keen on motor racing, an area where technology had leapt forward thanks to the development of better engines during the first world war. He bought a Sunbeam race car while holidaying in Britain, then returned to blitz the field in the 50 miles long New Zealand Motor Cup of 1925. Bill broke the Australasian land speed record twice in his career, was the first person in Australia or New Zealand to break the 100-mile an hour barrier, and even went on to race

Jet propulsion has changed the game on the water, from private craft to military and tourism applications

a Bentley special at Brooklands during the ‘golden era’ of that famous track. The inventions kept coming, in fields as varied as air conditioning, agriculture and excavation. Still, the best was yet to come. In 1951 that old idea of a boat to conquer the shallows and curves of his local rivers resurfaced. By 1954 he’d struck on a novel concept. A centrifugal pump fitted to a small plywood craft with a Ford engine, creating the first-ever jet boat. Engineer George Davidson got on board and helped refine the jet into a more powerful and efficient form. From here on, it was time to tame the rivers of the world. From Bill and his wife Peggy’s first trip up the Colorado River where it

winds through the Grand Canyon, the Hamilton Jet was a success. Bill’s son Jon returned to complete the conquest of the Colorado in 1960, and thereafter the big names fell like dominoes; the Zaire, Ganges, Amazon and many more. It’s fair to say that Bill’s jet changed boating in the same way the aeronautical jet engine changed flight. New sports, tourism operations, military applications and more sprung up from that moment of brilliance, seeded by a lifetime of questioning and creating. More than 60 years on, the Hamilton Jet is a household name, an industry leader and benchmark for the marine industry.

Value judgement by Andy Bryenton

When it’s time to choose a quad bike for the farm, the emphasis is definitely on hard work. There’s a calculation to be made between how much the machine costs, how hardy it is in the field, and just what kind of jobs are expected of it. Often, the mathematics of maintaining a good bottom line means that simpler tasks around the paddocks are achieved with the good old tried and true twowheeler; perhaps a ubiquitous farming machine like Kawasaki’s Stockman 250. At just a shade above $6,000 this represents good value for money in a package that’s versatile, nimble, easy for even novices to use, and stable in the mud and rough terrain we’re used to on Kiwi farms. How about this, though. How about an upgrade for $787. That’s the price of a budget overseas holiday, which we all know isn’t happening this year. However, for this small chunk of change, you can upgrade in the Kawasaki line-up from a 250cc two-wheeler to a full disc-braked, CVT transmission equipped four-wheeler packing 300cc and a bit more power. There’s no need, right here, to go into the many little ways in which a quad bike is more utilitarian than a two-wheeler around the farm. Towing small trailers and carrying bigger loads is just the beginning. With many of you reading this right now committed to quad ownership, we’d be

Yamaha’s Brute Force 300 seems to make solid sense when it comes to getting more hard work for your dollar

preaching to the choir in a major way. It’s just that usually, the price gap between a small, functional two-wheel farm bike and a mid-sized quad is a bit wider. That’s why the Kawasaki Brute Force 300 looks so good as a proposition for those who need a general-purpose quad but don’t want to spend the earth. If you don’t really need massive horsepower, a high top speed and lots of creature comforts like heated seats and grips, extra boxes, bags and racks, or futuristic styling, this no-nonsense

machine is more than adequate. It may not boast true four-wheel-drive, but neither does a regular farm bike. If your paddocks are relatively flat that’s not an issue. If you want to drive a bit further, carry a bit more, work a bit harder, get a bit more done, then $787 (it’s the difference between the RRPs of the Stockman and the Brute Force 300) seems like a small price to pay. It’s definitely a sum worth thinking about for the new season.
