Back from the brink For the past four and a half years, Monique Bradley has spent every day being reminded she is lucky to be alive. Nearly five years ago the carefree teenager was riding a horse on the beach at Whananaki South with a group of girls when her horse suddenly suffered the anguish of two broken front legs, throwing her from its back and rolling on her as it hit the ground. The pain would have been unimaginable for Monique – however she was knocked unconscious and to this day, remembers nothing from her accident. The memories have been filled in by those who were there, who called for help, and kept her still on the sand while they waited for help to arrive – and help came in the form of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. Due to the horse’s condition and the possibility of it getting a fright from the landing helicopter, the chopper landed further down the beach. The horse was lying just beside where Monique had landed and the risk of it hurting Monique further was a real one, especially if it got a fright from the chopper. All safety precautions were taken, and Monique was soon loaded onto a board and taken in the chopper to Whangarei Hospital. Once she was safely off the beach, her horse had to be euthanised to end its suffering.
On arrival, medical staff determined she had a fractured spine and a brain bleed. She remained unconscious and to this day, her memory only resurfaces about four to five days after the accident. After one week at Whangarei Hospital, Monique was transferred to ABI Brain Rehabilitation in Auckland where she stayed for a month before being finally able to return home. Back in 2015, Monique had already started university, studying to be a teacher, while also riding horses, doing a bit of modelling and coaching horse-riding at a pony club. Following her accident, Monique suffered from the effects of having a traumatic brain injury. This meant initially having to learn to walk, communicate and eat again and saw her struggle with her studies and general wellbeing – each day bringing a reminder of what had happened and what was now a “new normal”.
“While some Kiwis are enjoying homegrown vegetables, many are going without altogether,” says Yates spokesperson Fiona Arthur. “This National Gardening Week, people are being encouraged to grow-an-extrarow to share with neighbours, community pantries, food banks and other local food donation agencies. “Popping a few extra seeds in the dirt does not require much effort but could mean so much for another family in need. “To help get your extra row underway, Yates is lending a helping hand. When you register online at yates.co.nz/nationalgardening-week between October 1 and 25, you will receive a free packet of vegetable seeds.” Anyone can grow a garden, no matter how large or small the space. “Encourage family members to give growing some veggies a go,” says Integrity Community Media’s garden columnist Liz Clark. “Sharing extra produce from the garden with others is rewarding and reduces food waste. Have a look in the shed for some of those unused pots from the nursery, fill them up with some container and vegetable mix and sow a seed or two. “Green vegetables such as lettuce, mini cauliflower, spinach and eggplants
will grow quite happily provided they have enough space. Water regularly and feed with a liquid fertiliser for thriving plants. “It is also a great way to get the children involved and take pride in sharing what they have grown with others.” Once you have grown your veggies to share, please visit the Yates website to find a list of the organisations in your area that would welcome your donation of fresh homegrown produce. “National Gardening Week aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and closer connections with nature,” Ms Arthur said. “Whether it is a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening. Integrity Community Media has a Yates veggie hamper to give away valued at $300 — packed full of veggie seeds, both new and some old favourites, together with a range of fertilisers and pest control, as well as Yates Top 50 edible plants for pots — hot off the press. To be in to win, tell us who you will be sharing your produce with and why at comp@integrity.nz. The competition closes at midday, Thursday, October 22.

“We later expanded our field-grown bananas by two rows and are now growing more than 120 plants outdoors, including a large number of the authenticated varieties. In addition, we also have our indoor trial of Honduran and Australian hybrid banana varieties in a greenhouse. “Bananas need free-draining soils to survive, and they also need protection from wind and frosts. Irrigation is also needed to maintain satisfactory growth, and they thrive with selected fertiliser and dressings of things like lime and gypsum. “Bananas come in a range of heights and growth habits suitable for various garden styles. As well as the edible bananas, ornamental varieties feature bold flowers, red patterned leaves, shocking pink mid-ribs or stark white leaf undersides. “The plants can stand out and provide the various dimensions to enhance properties’ garden areas. They work well
with other subtropicals that thrive in conservatories and outside in the warmer areas of New Zealand. “The certification type we have from Horticulture New Zealand enables small growers to meet relevant grower regulation requirements and not only sell produce at farmers’ markets, but also sell bananas into some supermarkets and through wholesalers, which is exciting. “We have a wide range of bananas available as well as subtropical fruiting plants and selected ornamentals. “Check out our Kotare Subtropicals website and Bananas of New Zealand Aotearoa Facebook page for more information.”

“We diversified into bananas and other subtropicals to supply a growing interest amongst horticulturists and plant enthusiasts,” says Geoff. “We began with planting a row of 41 bananas from our previous property in Auckland as well as others we sourced from local growers who are very knowledgeable. “Within 18 months, the plants fruited and improved our crop diversity. At the time, we heard about Dr Jane Mullaney’s project, the Vision Mātauranga in Gisborne for AgResearch. “It was aimed at identifying which bananas are present in New Zealand. We donated a large component of plant material to help provide training in tissue culture and identify the skills necessary to grow banana varieties in suitable regions of New Zealand. “A number of the varieties supplied are now DNA tested and verified to what they are most similar to. We have since commenced selling to iwi, commercial growers, garden centres, nurseries, landscape designers and banana enthusiasts. “Our most popular varieties are the Lady Finger and Honduran and Australian hybrids specifically bred for their resistance to Panama disease and other diseases known to affect bananas in the tropics. We also sell Dwarf Cavendish and other commercial greenhouse varieties, and garden feature varieties of Cavendish, Lady Finger types Misi Luki, Ducasse and Pacha Naadan Australia’s improved Lady Finger.

ESTABLISHING
THE BLUE BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Samen NZ managing director Cees van Baar moved from the Netherlands 36 years ago to go farming and is now working alongside Sir Lockwood Smith to provide an exceptional Belgian Blue breeding animal. PART TWO
“W
e have progressed from an animal with calving difficulties to an easy calving, short gestation breed that benefits the New Zealand dairy farmer,” says Cees. “Morrinsville born Belgian Blue animals are at the base of the new breed KiwiBlue™. Samen NZ, have in partnership with Sir Lockwood Smith, developed an exclusive par tnership to produce KiwiBlue™ genetics specially selected for the New Zealand and international dairy industry. “Sir Lockwood, as he is as passionate as us about the breed and has New Zealand’s biggest herd. We have signed
an exclusive agreement to use his top females over our top bull and have trademarked the name KiwiBlue™. “His stud, Woodleigh Belgian Blues, has selected double muscle animals, which calve naturally and perform very well in pasture-based beef production. They are unique because almost all the animals at Woodleigh stud are homozygous polled. Not many Belgian Blue animals around the world carry that gene. “Laws against dehorning cattle have already been introduced in Germany, and we can see good growth opportunities for our Polled KiwiBlue™ genetics in other countries. The partnership will enable us to develop easy calving, short gestation,

The white Belgian Blue bulls provide easy birthing calves, which are colour marked for easy identification
homozygous polled, double-muscled bulls, which will colour mark and breed fast-growing beef animals under New Zealand conditions. “Both heifers and bulls or steers are suitable for rearing and will significantly reduce the number of bobby calves. “From Denmark, we have selected bulls that are predominantly used over Jersey cows. “Because of the double muscle, we can breed a great beef calf out of a tiny Jersey cow, and the same goes for New Zealand crossbred cows.” The demand for Belgian Blue calves has grown in popularity since Cees started to promote the breed. The first KiwiBlue™ calves are being born this year. “Farmers will see KiwiBlue™ come to market in the next few years. To assist farmers to find a market for their calves, we have employed dairy beef coordinator Trudy Bensted. “Trudy is a self-employed calf rearer and is extremely passionate about seeing rearers invest in a breed with more proven progeny that holds a good saleable value. “She collects data about birth weight, gestation length and growth rates for the
blue calves and has placed thousands of calves nationwide. Early slaughter data is looking very promising, with exceptionally high dressing out percentages due to the double muscle and the fact Belgian Blues are fine-boned and have smaller internal organs. “They have a very good feed conversion and grow a lot of meat in the right spots. Because the animals reach slaughter weights at a young age, the meat produced is a very young tender meat. “We are currently killing animals between 15 and 22 months, meaning they don’t need to be fed through a second winter.” Trudy helps farmers make informed decisions on the breed. “Three years ago, I started connecting good quality genetics with calf rearers and finishers,” says Trudy. “As a calf rearer, I did a project during the Kellogg’s Rural Leadership programme based on reducing bobby calves and inspiring profitable beef. “I found we have great genetics that we can use across dairy farms. “We have people not wanting certain breeds as they don’t get the results they need. Over the years, the dairy industry

has lost trust with finishers due to a strong focus on short gestation and calving ease, with the beef no longer meeting a consistent quality. “I help people look into what beef they are introducing to their herds. “Among the breeds is the Belgian Blue, as it is amazing. We are seeing gestations from 274–277 days with our short gestation Belgian Blues and very minimal calving issues. “Results are speaking for themselves once the calves arrive. Some farmers have been sceptical and ordered 30 straws, and the following year 300. We have happy clients that are selling
their calves with no problems. We have enough data now on kill out that I am focussing on the end of the supply chain and starting to collaborate more so with supplying restaurants and supermarket firms acros s New Zealand and internationally. “I am seeing more integration happening with dairy farmers running beef. “It makes me happy seeing profitable solutions come back to our farmers, calf rearers and finishers while building the trust of the breed that is profitable for everyone, so we don’t have a waste product.”

Extracting the oil by Ann van Engelen
Chris Kaye and Nicole Alexander discovered Hihi estate in 2019 and began their adventure of producing extra virgin olive oil from their 900 trees.
“I
grew up in Te Atatu and Chris comes from Dargaville,” says Nicole. “We met in Brisbane, Australia, and returned to New Zealand eight years ago for the outdoors lifestyle because we enjoy things like hunting and fishing. “We lived in Gisborne for four years and Ruakākā for two years prior to moving here. “We decided to look for something we can do to prepare for retirement, and this olive grove was for sale in 2019. We viewed the property over the Easter weekend and fell in love with the area. We believe there is a lot of business potential here. “We have always liked olive oil, and the grove was well designed and manicured by the previous owners who spent 20
years working on it. They did all the hard work and taught us what to do. “Chris and I are real foodies, and he is the recipe man on our Hihi Estate Facebook page. We also have an Airbnb cottage, which keeps me busy. We look across to Mangonui Four Square and the whale museum.” Hihi estate is a boutique operation with five distinct cultivars. Nicole and Chris press immediately at harvest as olives are known to ferment quickly. “The olives are a biannual crop, and we pick our fruit green because there are two fungi and rot that can affect olives due to humidity and having branches too close to the ground. We have pickers come in and help us so we can focus on the pressing. “The branches are shaken by our harvesting machine, and the olives drop

Harvesting the olives is done by a shaker machine with the olives placed in baskets by staff on to 50-metre nets laid on the ground under the trees. The nets are gathered up after 10 trees, and the olives are put into baskets. “If you put your hand in the basket as you are picking, you will feel the warmth of the fruit just like grapes. We press and bottle our oil on site. Last year we pressed 3,000 litres of oil. This year we only pressed for one week and produced 350 litres. “We use a 250ml bottle and also have a 750ml wine bottle for presentation. We designed our label and chose the bottles last October. People love the wine bottle idea as they come with their own pourer and make great gifts. “Chris is the brains behind the organisation and works out the quantities versus litres and weights. You need a
minimum of 150kg to start the machine, and we do third party pressing as well to help other people get their oil. “Growers are very passionate about getting their own product returned, and we ensure our customers get the olive oil from their fruit. “The hard part about olive growing is the pruning, which we do by hand, with loppers or a chainsaw. Olive trees create vine-like wispy branches. You need to prune them right back as you won’t get fruit from an old grove. “The problem pruning that hard is they go into overdrive, and that creates the need to thin the new growth so air can get through. Last year we pruned 57 trees and left no leaves on the main branches. Three months later, they were regrowing, and this year, we will have a great crop.
OcTObER 2021
Hihi Estate is home to five cultivars of olives
The olives are pressed immediately after harvest
“We have five cultivars, including the J5, which Mr Milton Johnson, a nurseryman from Kaitaia, propagated. J5 is his fifth grafting and is mild in flavour. They grow prolifically up here. “We also have the Greek Koroneiki, which grows hundreds of tiny olives. Ascolano is the first of our Italian, then we have Frantoio and Leccino, which is the strongest flavour. Oil mellows in flavour if it is affected by light, heat or air over
time. We use big temperature-controlled vats and pump argon on top of the oil, so there is no air or light. “Last year, our oil was superior because the year prior, there was hardly any rain. Olives are working well for the lifestyle we enjoy. “We are happy with our size of 15 acres with 8–10 acres in the grove. Being half an hour from Kaitaia or Kerikeri gives us the best of both worlds.”

NORTHLAND’S SKY ANGELS by Ann van Engelen While 2020 was an interesting year for many New Zealanders, it was especially a year Hemi Murray, his friends and family won’t forget in a hurry, thanks to the Northland Rescue Helicopter service.
H
emi became a patient of the Northland Rescue Helicopter service after a motocross accident and said he knows he is lucky to be alive after the horrific event that July. “I lost control of my motorbike and am still recovering from the crash,” says Hemi. “What started out like any other fun day with a bunch of mates heading into the forest in North Awanui for a great ride soon turned into a life-threatening situation. “We were on a trail and were having a great time heading deeper into the forest. I was going down a straight when my wheel hit tree roots. Just like that, I lost control and slammed head-on into a tree. It all happened in a few split seconds, and I didn’t have time to brake or anything.”
Other riders quickly went to Hemi’s aid. “Some rode on to find cell phone coverage to call for help as there was no signal there. I was conscious, and the other riders sat with me, trying to keep me stable and awake. Had I been knocked out, and if they didn’t talk to me and keep comforting me, I would have died. All we could do was keep calm as I was struggling to breathe.” Hemi’s injuries included suffering a shattered pelvis, severe whiplash to his neck and broken ribs, which also resulted in his right lung being punctured. “Words can not describe that feeling of relief when you are lying there and hear the hum of the rescue chopper coming our way — I have never been so thankful.”
Hitting the roots of a tree with his bike in deep forest caused Hemi to hit a tree head-on On arrival, the Northland Rescue Helicopter crew winched a paramedic down to the accident scene. Hemi’s vital signs were low, and his heart rate was erratic. “My riding buddies helped put me onto the stretcher and then moved me to a more open location to be winched back up to the chopper. The team moved

fast, stabilised me and made a lot of medical decisions. “I was flown to Whangārei Hospital. On arrival, the helicopter waited on the roof while the hospital staff ran some tests. Sure enough, I needed to be rushed to Auckland Hospital urgently and undergo surgery. With my torso taking the main impact, my whole body hurt. I also

Hemi believes there is no doubt he would not have survived his accident without the rescue chopper service severed my spleen, damaged adrenal glands, bruised my kidneys, pulverised my gall bladder and liver and suffered large blood loss. “I went through a myriad of surgeries in Auckland, which included being placed into an induced coma for three days.” Hemi’s abdomen was left open and packed with gauze so surgeons could access and check his organs while waiting for the swelling to subside. “I spent three weeks in Auckland Hospital before being transferred back to Whangarei. It took another three weeks before being able to head to rehabilitation and finally go home in late September. “I had to learn to walk and move again, but I am thankful to be here and know that
it is because of the great care I received from the helicopter and the hospital staff.” “I am still not physically capable of accomplishing things I used to do. I have a lot of bad days with pain. My pelvis exploded, my organs are still recovering, I smashed my right shoulder, and the tendon in my neck plays up. “The pain level gets up 9/10, and my energy levels drop really quickly, and I can’t even mow the lawn without getting immediately exhausted. I am appreciative of the support I have from friends and family. “The surgeons told me it could take years to recover due to the internal damage people cannot see, but I am still grateful to be alive.”

Hemi Murray, with his helper Caleb handing the funds he raised for the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service to staff Dave Anson, Clinton Yeates and Ricky Hanger To acknowledge their appreciation of the service, Hemi and his friends have held two fundraiser bike rides for the rescue chopper service and raised more than $6,500 in total. “It was the least we could do for them, saving my life. Hearing that sound of the helicopter arriving was like angel wings. I wanted to get up and celebrate. Until then, we knew it was bad and had all sat there silent.
“Honestly, we are mind blown by the service I received. “There is no doubt in my mind that if it weren’t for the rescue helicopter that day, I would have died. It is that simple.” To help keep the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service in the air, supplying air ambulance services, medical flights and search and rescue services to Northland, go to nest.org.nz/donate.

TYING THE KNOT Creating memorable weddings by Ann van Engelen
A wedding ceremony is often described as the moment couples pledge their love and start the official journey of commitment to each other for the rest of their life. To have a successful day, it is essential to have plans in place. You can choose to do this yourself, with a few friends or family or through a wedding planner. In today’s world, you can create whatever type of wedding you want. It is your choice whether you have a rustic, traditional, country, beach or garden setting, civil or something completely different. You can utilise hotels, marquees and local caterers. Ensure you have the conversation with your partner on the style that suits you both while sticking to an agreed budget. Decide whether you want a three-course sit-down meal or a relaxed setting, age-old floral arrangements and a big beautiful white dress or something more you. The choice really is yours. If you want a low key small event, the civil ceremony is typically held in a courthouse and usually officiated by a Justice of the Peace. It can be short and,
at times, impersonal with the bride and groom, the civil official, and the legal witnesses attending. Some couples choose to celebrate with friends and family at a reception in time to come. A formal wedding typically includes an elaborately decorated ceremony and reception along with attendants, ushers, tailored stationery and assigned seating. This type of wedding can have any number of guests. Couples who choose to have an informal wedding can customise every aspect of their day. They, at times, include important traditions while creating an intimate and personalised event reflecting their love and commitment to each other. Rustic and country weddings usually take place in barns, outdoors or at village halls and have a relaxed vibe. Country ceremonies often allow for vintage or DIY details. They are the opposite of a traditional, formal wedding. You can

expect to see bales of hay, wooden pallets, kraft paper, hessian fabric and plenty of florals. Following the country theme, brides may choose to wear boots and use trucks or utes as wedding day transport instead of traditional wedding cars. Cows, sheep and farm dogs often appear in photos, and the reception setting is often a self-
service format such as a buffet, pig on the spit or roast. When deciding on the type of wedding ceremony that works for you, allow extra thought for your photographer, cake, rings, outfits and bouquets. These, along with choosing your attendants and guests, are what help make your day a memorable one.

AG CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS A knotty problem solved by Andy Bryenton
New Holland has come out on top of this year’s Edison Awards with a new twist on tying knots. It’s all about better baling and greater efficiency in the field. The humble knot is one of the earliest of human invention; an achievement for Cub Scouts, the key to building sailing ships, and, it seems, an issue for agriculture. Working out how to make a machine tie knots and thus make stable bales of hay was a big achievement back at the start of the mechanisation of farming. It was only this year that some of the basic kinks in bale knotting were worked out for good. New Holland premiered the first automatic baler in 1940 and has been trying to make these machines better, bigger and more robust ever since. In 2021, it introduced the BigBaler PLUS, which came equipped with LoopMaster technology. This new system of baling hay splices the two existing forms of knot-tying into one mechanical process. A double loop is used, meaning zero offcut twine getting back into the field to snarl up the ecosystem or following machines. At the same time, the ties are tough and reliable, meaning it’s easier to handle the bales when they pop out of the chute. Carlo Lambro, New Holland brand president, was proud to take home

the Edison Awards Gold Medal for this new concept. The awards are named for famous American inventor Thomas Alva Edison, a prolific technologist who invented the record player and the light bulb, among other items. “We are honoured to receive this recognition for our patented Loop Master

technology, which brings significant cost and environmental benefits to our customers,” said Mr Lambro. “By recognising that bale quality is key to delivering maximum productivity and minimum waste, over the years, our team has been focussing its resources on how to enhance these two aspects further while making baling even more sustainable.” The advantages of the Loop Master technology are manifold. For example, by
eliminating offcuts, about 45 kilograms or 5.6 kilometres of twine is saved during a 10,000-bale season. The higher tensile strength, together with the high compression system of the new baler results in denser bales, optimising truck transport with more tonnage for each load. That means transporting fewer loads, further reducing the impact on the environment.

Pugging, resowing stance adapts by Andy Bryenton
Rural advocacy groups are supportive of the governments rollback of what had been called ‘unworkable’ legislation on pugging and resowing dates. The previous standards, set out as part of a broader range of environmental management targets for farmers, had been decried as over-legislative and unworkable, not only by protest groups such as Groundswell NZ but also industry monitors such as Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Now, these have been replaced with a more flexible environmental management approach. Details were included in a revised set of intensive winter grazing proposals, circulated for public consultation in late August. It’s an acknowledgement in principle that one size does not fit all. “We believe the government’s new proposed approach, which focusses on practical management by farmers, is more workable, and that’s progress,” said B+LNZ CEO Sam McIvor when the new regulations were shared. “Nevertheless, we still have concerns around the proposed 10-degree slope rule for winter grazing and the certified freshwater farm plan process.” This separate part of the government’s farming plans aims to increase rural water
purity. However, it has been marred by the roll-out of inaccurate mapping, which designated the wrong kinds of land for fencing and livestock restrictions. Farming groups lobbied hard to have the inaccurate mapping rolled back. “The government has proposed an improvement on the slope rule, but we still think the approach is more restrictive than it needs to be to manage the environmental risks,” Mr McIvor said. “For example, we’d like to see flexibility in situations where there is no receiving water body nearby.” As with some other recent central government initiatives, such as the civic Three Waters concept, stakeholders in this regulation debate feel that there is a lack of data preventing them from tabling a solution. “Without having visibility of the exact text of the certified freshwater farm plan, and given the requirement to demonstrate environmental outcomes would be the same as the rules, we have reservations about how workable the proposed farm plan approach will actually be,” says Mr McIvor.
STEVE WOOD CONTRACTING
The government has compromised on ‘unworkable’ pugging and resowing rules that would have affected thousands of farmers and rural contractors
“We are urging the government to work with industry on ensuring that the certified freshwater farm plan process is practical, effects-based and based on industry plans.”

A winning combination by Andy Bryenton
Big, powerful and brutal, the T-92 tank was the biggest deployed by the Allies in the second world war. With twin treads on each side and a gun so immense no turret could hold it, this monster was the equivalent of today’s gigantic open-field tractors. Look back in history, however, and it was the nimble little jeep that did more for victory. In the same way, small utility tractors are the all-purpose swiss army knives of the farming world, called into play to manoeuvre and work where their big brothers can’t go. A prime example of the breed is the long-established but still very versatile John Deere 3 series. It is not the smallest Deere in the shed, nor by far the biggest, but it’s been crafted to do two things with absolute aplomb. It’s easy to use and easy to adapt. Take the current 3038E, for example. It sits in a sweet spot for power and size, with fourwheel-drive for maximum traction in tight corners, a compact width to handle barn doors and farmyard gates, and a clutchless hydrostatic transmission, providing pedals for forward and reverse action. This last part is clever, as it unlocks the power of the 3038E’s Stage V diesel engine for the kind of jobs bigger tractors don’t usually get called on for. While a monster of the fields is made to plough ahead for hours at a time, its big mill ticking over to generate mountains of torque, a smaller machine will often be used to ferry feed about, unload trucks or tow a slasher.
John Deere’s 3038E is a versatile machine that puts ease of operation to the fore
These are jobs that require a firm hand on the wheel and a quick shuttle between forward and reverse. Making it easy to wrangle the controls puts the 3038E in the zone where lifestyle block owners and all kinds of farmworkers can jump aboard and get to work intuitively. Here’s another neat trick. A half-press on the brake will activate the diff lock, meaning that everything’s on one foot for traversing mud and sloped terrain. The natural mate with this tractor is the
300e loader, but there’s no need to stop there. Like one of those modern batterypowered yard tools with multiple heads, the 3038E can be fitted with a host of PTO powered implements to specialise its tasks. True to form, these are also elementary to hitch up, thanks to John Deere’s proprietary iMatch Quick-Hitch system. If you need utility around the farm, this versatile little machine could be just the ticket; it’s a whole lot of hard work, made easy in a small package.

A family business through and through
Keep track of where you’ve been
Robert Alison Contracting is celebrating half a century of service in Whangarei as a truly extended family business in Whangarei that was established by the Going family 72 years ago. Wynne Going began baling hay in 1950 but decided in the early 70s that he had enough. At the time, a young local farmer, Robert Alison, was driving for Wynne and his parents, Walter and Joan Alison, ran a sheep and beef farm nearby. They purchased the business from Wynne, and Robert soon took over running it. During the years, Robert and Lynda have seen farmers, contractors and trends come and go. Initially, the business was established to do conventional hay with 250,000 hay bales annually. With time, machinery has evolved with RAC’s original five conventional balers, now growing to three conventional balers, two round balers, two loader wagons, along with cultivation and seed drilling and an array of tractors. This season the company is back into maize planting and forage harvesting. With Robert’s son-in-law Duane Trubshoe and daughter Kristy now at the helm of the day to day running of the business, RAC is still strong on family pride and ethics, with the eldest daughter Tylar driving for the last two seasons. John Going, younger brother to Wynne, is still in the driver’s seat at 80plus years young for RAC and cousin Kyn Franks, along with Duane’s cousin, Dee-Jay starting this season. Good friend Aaron Wright rejoins the RAC

family, and during the years, RAC has employed local farming lads. “It’s pretty cool to see Robert and ourselves hit 50 seasons in this game. It’s not easy, that’s for sure. I wouldn’t have it any other way, and hopefully, cheers to another 50 if the family or extended family want to carry it on,“ Duane Trubshoe said.

Focussing on land work After working in the building industry for many years, Bevan Harper returned home to New Zealand from Australia with his wife Alisha and established Element Landworks. “After growing up around machinery, this was second nature, and it was something I always wanted to do,” says Bevan. “We created Element Landworks with a focus on earthworks and were also doing a small amount of mulching. The mulching side of the business began to take off and become our area of growth. “We started with our skid-steer mulcher, which focussed mainly on horticultural pruning and trimming work. Cover cropping for sustainability by Andy Bryenton

SELF DRIVE HIRE
Low residue crops such as maize, soybeans and other silage forage can leave behind nothing to shelter the soil beneath, in between plantings. Cover crops can fill in the gaps in the planting cycle. Soil that is not under cover and bound together by living biomass can be prey to erosion from wind and rain. The biota inside the soil strata can suffer because of this. Live roots in the soil are good for the fungi and microbes that operate at this level. Keeping this strata healthy is of vital importance, whether undersowing or no-till techniques are being utilised or more conventional methods. A canopy of green also protects nutrients from run-off in extreme weather and blocks the break up of soil aggregates. There’s another level to this nutrient trapping effect, too. A cover crop will store nutrients from manure, mineralised organic nitrogen or underutilised fertiliser until the following years’ crop can utilise them, reducing nutrient run-off and leaching. That is all, of course, above and beyond the major reason for planting a late autumn and winter crop; more varied, reliable livestock grazing green mass. Another positive factor involves nitrogen. When a cover crop is chosen for its boost to soil nitrogen, the application of nitrogen fertiliser for the subsequent main crop may be reduced. It can lower the bottom line for production, and environmentally, this cuts back on the use of nitrogen fertiliser

As seeds go in the ground, farmers prepare for the future by planting out cover crops, a bonus for soil health as well as feed biomass
that is produced using fossil fuels. There are risks as well as benefits to planting a cover crop. A careful analysis should be made of the soil type and the prevailing weed and pest ecosystem to ensure that these factors can be controlled alongside two different uses for the same pasture area. That’s why the time to make a cover crop
plan is now, in symbiosis with the main silage crop that’s already on farmer’s minds coming into spring. Get it right, and it won’t just be your accountant and your livestock who thank you. There are knock-on benefits from everything to deep-soil fungus and pollinators when this method is executed well.

During 50 years of dairy farming and fencing, I have constantly looked for better ways to do the job. These methods have resulted in several changes to my tractor and post driver allowing things to work quickly and productively. Long gone are the days of digging in posts, and although many people still think that is what we do, many of us don’t ever. Fencing is a varied and interesting job. During the years, I have done all types, from building a rose/wedding arbour, a children’s adventure playground, and of course, putting in and pulling out vineyards. Many years before they were thought of, I created an eight-reel wire unwinder on a small trailer. I now have a multiple one that mounts on the front of the tractor and can run out four wires at a time. Sheep/deer netting unroller/tensioner is another invention for rolling out and tightening up netting mounted on the tractor.

I have developed a rubber post cap lifter that lifts the post cap easily and releases automatically when dropped, which is a great safety feature. Those who attended the recent FCANZ field day at Waimate North may have seen the way we drive the tractor from the rear-mounted platform and
have a post puller mounted on the front bucket. My countersinking drill bit was a success because it simplifies the process in one action. All these initiatives have meant that we are now branching out to sell through our website fencershand. co.nz. Over time, more products will be displayed there.

Urea technology for Northland conditions by Andy Bryenton
The past few summers in the north have been hot and dry ones, with record temperatures, sunshine hours matching those of the famously sunny Nelson Bays area, and water woes for town and country alike. Betting on summer rain is never best practice in this part of the country, extending north into the subtropical belt and prey to the whim of El Nino and La Nina weather patterns that can deliver months of dryness. For one aspect of farming, however, technology has created a breakthrough for such conditions. Urea is important for pasture growth, and pasture growth is necessary for feed, especially when dry conditions threaten. However, one of the most well-known adages in the fertiliser business is that urea needs rain mere hours after spreading, or it begins to lose its valuable nitrogen content into the air. Roll the dice, bet on rain, and a percentage of the benefits could evaporate without it. Dry coastal winds such as those we also experience here are an exacerbating factor. No longer, with an advancement pioneered by Ravensdown, whose fertiliser scientists realised that there was a way to stop the loss. Beating lack of rain, dry winds and lack of plant cover was the goal, and they have tackled these factors by coating the urea, slashing nitrogen loss by half. Now, this method has been in the
field long enough for statistics to prove its effectiveness. “At Ravensdown, we are seeing farmers tackle their greenhouse gas emissions by considering these three factors and choosing coated urea,” said Greg Costello, the innovative company’s fertiliser product manager. “Our field-based teams are encouraging shareholders to think about their utilisation rates, nitrogen use efficiency and environmental mitigations. After all, a co-operative should be helping its owners apply the right amount, rather than the largest amount.” That’s food for thought as we approach the warm half of the year, with forecasts predicting more of what we’ve seen in previous summers. The window of application is widened by the inclusion of that specially engineered coating. While there is a slight cost increase to apply the N-protect product instead of uncoated urea, this technology is becoming mainstream because of results. The final and welcome knock-on effect, which comes from a coated urea solution, is a lack of stress for applicators.
Groundspreaders take to the fields with new, more durable coated urea products

I advise them to start with a blood test from the vet, so we have a starting point. With the correct feed you can gain positive results quickly for horses. “I offer free delivery to people in my local region for six bags. Get your waste away Natural picks for effluent field planting by Andy Bryenton
Spring is here, and it’s time to think about planting. Part of this regime is planting new growth over effluent system run-off fields, where water trickles back into the ecosystem and foliage fills in the final step of the chain. The problem? Soaking up water from your effluent run-off field while making the area look good with your surrounding landscape design. Robust plants with the ability to transpire large amounts of water from underground pipes back into the atmosphere would be ideal, but there’s an issue with those water-seeking roots. Get the wrong species, and your pipes could be bound up and choked by the very plants which are supposed to complete the cycle, storing away nutrients and exhaling water vapour. The solution? A selection of planting options boasting high transpiration rates but also put down only shallow roots or root masses that won’t clog up the trickle holes in your underground piping. As an added bonus, there are many species that look great as part of your garden and blend into your countryside views, all while fulfilling the vital role of taking up water and breathing it back into the water cycle.
Thankfully, there’s enough choice to be able to pick for aesthetics as well as practicality. Low-lying plants such as comprosmas spread over the soil to create cover and can be augmented with ferns such as the kiokio. More robust shrubs from the native plant roster include the kaka beak, the koromiko and some of the taller coprosma species, as well as the kawakawa. A trio of taller trees are also suitable; the well-known mānuka or ti-tree, the cabbage tree and the kānuka. It is by no means a comprehensive list, but it shows the range of New Zealand native plants that can be used for this vital task. By picking local flora, you’re helping the local ecosystem and creating a habitat for bees, birds and insects too. For the very best results, consult with your local garden centre team and your wastewater system installer at the time of installation. Some systems perform better when partnered up with specific plants and vice versa. No matter your choice,
The final step in cycling wastewater back into the environment safely — plant out run-off fields with native flora to provide a habitat for new Zealand insects and birds
you’ll be secure in the knowledge that Mother Nature is taking care of the final step of the purification process and the
interface between drainage technology and naturally growing roots will not become a tangled issue.

Their vision was to reduce the hightech dependency with the consequent risk of system failure, costly power usage and constant monitoring that is

all too common with traditional septic wastewater systems. To achieve this, the engineers have combined various forms of well researched and established passive treatments and natural processes, which are very proficient at treating sewage and wastewater. “Nature is one huge recycling mechanism,” Dean adds. “The NaturalFlow system utilises these recycling mechanisms of nature by harnessing its forces that have been quietly working together for thousands of years to break down and decompose waste all around us and positions them in an enclosed ecosystem module that simulates the natural forest floor. “It will treat and break down your wastewater, just as nature does, and then reintroduce it into the environment when it is perfectly safe to do so.” Using power-free aerating processes, such as vermiculture as opposed to mechanical pumps, these composting
worms reduce the solid waste by up to 95 per cent, creating in the process valuable water-soluble nutrients that can be recycled safely back into the environment. Homeowners from the Cape to Bluff now have access to advanced water treatment solutions synonymous with clean, green 21st century ideals. “The NaturalFlow product is our flagship product and now we have added the EconoTreat product,” said Dean. “This provides a very highly advanced secondary-level treatment of the wastewater and also denitrification, to protect our natural waterways from these pollutants. It is operated by a single blower, meaning very low power usage and quiet operation in the back yard. “The Waterflow team will provide overall personal and innovative site solutions. With strong product knowledge and client respect, Waterflow is a solutions-based company that cares.”

Where to go before you mow
Spring is the season for outdoor chores, as the green and growing things in our gardens take a great leap upward. It’s time to strike back with the latest technology.

The importance of minerals

Husqvarna has been keeping up with the play, developing new and better ways to simplify lawn and garden care during winter. Now, as the need for reliable, safe and efficient outdoor power equipment is upon us, it’s a good time to take a look at their full range. You may very well be convinced to get rid of your old, hard to start, temperamental tools and invest in an upgrade. One place where the new season heralds change is the big blue building in Wairau Park, the local home of Husqvarna. Robin Humphreys is the proprietor of Gardening Aids Limited, a name that’s been helping folks on the shore with their outdoor power needs for close to five decades. That converts to a huge wealth of knowledge in the field. Husqvarna, which has a similar history of quality and service, is a great fit for this iconic local business. go-to for mowing. Lawns start looking shaggy with the onset of warmer, more humid weather and a spot of seasonal rain, prompting many homeowners and lifestyle block owners to get the mower or ride-on out of the shed. While the expertise of Gardening Aids can help put new life into older machines, it’s a good time to take a peek at what could be; easier mowing, a more comfortable ride-on experience and even battery-powered options for the new, emissions-free century. Husqvarna even leads the pack when it comes to fully automatic robotic mowers that reduce lawn chores to simply marvelling at the efficiency of a machine that looks like it’s dropped in from the future. For those bigger tasks requiring a little more vigour, Husqvarna also offers a range of brush cutters, reclaiming valuable lawn and pasture space from tangled overgrowth.
That is because most are formulated as a ‘one a day’ supplement and are often filled with too many B vitamins yet lack the minerals and antioxidants we need. Outright mineral deficiencies cause disease but of much greater importance is the number of diseases linked to sub-optimal minerals in our diet. Sub-optimal means less than our bodies need. If I could do an experiment it would be to give all New Zealanders a comprehensive multimineral, multivitamin and antioxidant and observe health patterns during a long period of time. I would not be surprised to see reductions in most chronic diseases. Farmers are very aware of the mineral deficiencies in our soil. I spoke to a farming client recently and he commented on the improvements to animal health when they added selenium and other minerals. He said the sheep went from being lethargic to full of energy. It is a real tragedy that we do not
incorporate such advice into human health. Perhaps the issue is that, unlike livestock, humans do not have a productivity value. When I recently reformulated my Cell-X multi-nutritional supplement, I took great care to ensure that minerals, like selenium and zinc, were at levels that support optimal health. Our immune system, indeed the health of every cell, requires these minerals to produce powerful enzymes that protect our cells, including immune cells, from damage and disease. I offer you a challenge. Take a good multi-nutritional supplement like Cell-X for three months and notice the difference. Most talk about more energy, better immunity, especially in winter and just feeling well. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. “I had previously run a business and had lots of work experience but I decided it was time to get a qualification, so as a mature student I signed up at NorthTec for a foundation course to refresh some basic study skills. I enjoy learning so chose to do the tourism course assuming I would work with a travel agent. The tutor made learning really fun and worthwhile and catered to all our learning styles including helping me with mild dyslexia. Then when Covid happened early in our course, he went beyond the call of duty to make sure we each got what we needed to carry on. Most of the other students were at least a generation younger than me but I felt totally accepted and included. The course was really valuable because it is very broad based and sets you up for so much more than travel which has been essential in the face of Covid. My course work experience was at Kiwi North, and the skills we learnt could be applied to jobs ranging from working in dive shops, hotels, or as visitor hosts. With tourism being one of the industries hardest hit by Covid, any work with a travel agent was off the table. I couldn’t get work for six months when I finished the course, but I was fortunate to have been offered two jobs in domestic tourism a few weeks ago. I chose a casual job, customer service with an airline where I help customers with check in, cargo, and transferring flights and am learning a huge amount specific to this industry. Remembering all the computer entry codes is particularly challenging but very satisfying when I master it. I particularly love helping the customers with what they want and I now have more confidence and increased skills in managing the varied customer based situations that arise. Maturity is on my side here and I would encourage anyone thinking of studying later in life to step up and go for it.” Heather Ward Certificate in Tourism Graduate

Crucial time for future seasons’ crops preparation
BU
ADVERTORIAL
Spring is an important and busy period on the avocado orchard; harvest is underway, as is the beginnings of flowering, signalling the set of next season’s crop. Andrew Cutfield, general manager of investor relations and supply for Darling Group says its NZ avocado supply arm, Just Avocados, encourages their growers to focus on harvest, pruning and nutrition strategies during spring to optimise flowering and fruit set. “Practices we see as contributing to success across high performing orchards are harvesting 60–70% of the current season’s crop by the time of flowering to ensure resources are put into setting the next season’s crop, regular seasonal pruning to ensure better production and more consistent cropping. The provision of nutrients at the right time to balance resource use and encourage adequate flush after flowering, which becomes the following season’s flowering and fruiting wood.” Andrew says bud development looks strong currently and that crop load management will be crucial this year to avoid the depletion of resources within avocado trees. “Ensure your pruning strategy is in place and contractors are lined up to carry this out. Crop load management may be a significant factor this year to ensure trees don’t get overloaded with the current season’s fruit as well as a
heavy set for next season, which can trigger poor flowering and fruit set in 2022.” There has been much communication among the New Zealand avocado industry about 2021-22 being a lower payout season. Andrew says it may encourage growers to hold out for the traditional late-season value opportunities. However, he advises against this in the interest of the health of the orchard. “Just Avocados’ mantra is that orchard health should not be compromised because of what the market and returns are doing. It’s likely we have another good fruit set coming, but we are looking at the following year now, and we want our growers to ensure we have strong flowers for spring 2022. “The practice we advocate is to get crop off, get the trees pruned and get repeatability of fruit set, which is your best way to achieve sustainable longterm profitability.” Andrew said average fruit size is currently larger when compared to this time last season. “Of the Just Avocados’ supplier orchards that have completed picking so far this season, we are seeing on
average a 27% increase in actual bins picked versus estimates. This is largely linked to larger fruit size, which is currently at 32% for 28 count size and smaller whereas the industry was at 56.1% for this size at this point in time last season.” Select picking is an important consideration this season. “Pricing for small class two and three fruit (30 count size and smaller) will be marginal this season. Due to the higher volumes of larger fruit coming into the market, these prices will likely remain low. So, if select picking, focus on getting the exposed, class one fruit off for packing and then prune away small fruit.” Pruning off the exposed and spent wood and smallest fruit as part of the follow-up structural prune will likely pay dividends, says Andrew. “The value of a better-resourced tree and better tree architecture for this spring and more importantly the following spring will strongly outweigh any revenue from this smaller fruit.” COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS NEWS YOU CAN TRUST

Big ship to boost log exports by Paul Campbell
New economies of scale will benefit New Zealand log sales with a deal finalised that will soon see the largest vessel to ever call at New Zealand for the loading of logs.

The deal between South Pacific Shipping (SPS) and Oldendorff Carriers was brokered by Braemar ACM’s Bruce McFarlane, who says: “We saw an opportunity to bring together two major players from the logs trade and dry bulk shipping to create new economies of scale through the utilisation of the new mobile shore cranes and larger vessels at Tauranga.” Mr Cameron Mackenzie from South Pacific Shipping said not only will this be the biggest vessel to load logs from New Zealand, but loading a gearless ship is also a first for the New Zealand log
export industry. “Our objective is to make the supply chain as efficient as possible while maximising port throughput, as well as minimising the environmental footprint from the transportation of logs.” Oldendorff Carriers has been part of the New Zealand log trade for decades. With more than 700 vessels in their operating fleet that range from 11,000 metric tonnes deadweight through to 210,000 metric tonnes deadweight, Oldendorff has been able to draw from its extensive fleet to quickly adjust to SPS’s developing shipping requirements. South Pacific Shipping’s Cameron Mackenzie
THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING LOCAL
What’s your woodlot worth?
Mr Mackenzie said the news was also good for the environment and safety as the ship will carry underdeck twice the volume of a conventional logger but will not require any fumigation by methyl bromide, as no logs will be carried on deck. The logs are sourced from Pacific Forest Products (PFP) and supplied entirely from sustainable plantation forests. The bigger vessels will allow ISO Stevedoring to utilise their new high-
capacity shore cranes, improving loading speeds and stevedore safety. The vessel will transport the logs from the Port of Tauranga with no deck cargo fumigation or lashing required, which will mean faster and more efficient loading that increases berth utilisation. Moving to the larger Post Panamax vessel will allow the logs to be transported with a lower carbon output per CBM, compared to shipping on a regular handysize logger.

Water remains a problem
Northland farmers’ views sought on policies
by Dr Shane Reti MP
There are at least two significant water issues at the moment that will affect farmers and wider communities in general. One is the Water Services bill. This was passed in parliament recently with our agriculture spokesperson and previous Dairy Woman of The Year Barbara Kuriger stating in parliament: “This bill requires people to register their drinking water supply, require people to prepare a drinking water safety plan and lodge this with Taumata Arowai, prepare a source water risk management plan, establish a consumer complaints process, and Taumata Arowai must review drinking water safety plans and monitor compliance.” The government is asking more than 70,000 small suppliers to comply with these issues and then expects Taumata Arowai to review those water safety plans and monitor compliance. Our concern is around the burden of
compliance on small rural suppliers, and we opposed the bill on this basis and will continue supporting our rural community Secondly, the Three Waters. All three Northland councils have joined 60/67 other district councils in opposing the asset grab that is Three Waters. The governance, asset transfer and benefit:cost ratios do not stack up, and there is near-unanimous resistance. We feel that strongly about this that we have launched an online petition that already has 15,000 signatures across New Zealand. In our hands, we will reverse Three Waters and return decision-making to local councils. You can add your voice against Three Waters at national.org.nz/stop-the-threewaters-asset-grab.
Stay home if you’re sick
Federated Farmers Northland is on a new recruitment drive as it canvasses the feelings of rural landowners about mounting restrictions from government policies. Federated Farmers Northland president Colin Hannah said he has immense concerns about farm profitability, adverse climatic events, mental wellbeing, the Resource Management Act, Three Waters reform, Significant Natural Areas and local body reform. He calls on Northland farmers to provide the organisation with a clear mandate as it ramps up efforts to stop the democratic rights of everyday Kiwis from being further eroded. Mr Hannah says Federated Farmers Northland, regularly supported by its Auckland counterparts, has long represented local farmers’ views in Kaipara, Whangārei and Far North District Councils, along with the Northland Regional Council. While the councils have traditionally been farmer-friendly, the current government-driven issues impacting farmers are likely to continue driving a wedge between councils and rural landowners — a major cause for concern. Nevertheless, Mr Hannah says Federated Farmers Northland is always open to dialogue with anyone. “That is why we are not afraid to voice the concerns of Northland farmers and
take those messages to Wellington if required,” Mr Hannah said. “What is currently going on with the government direction to local councils is clearly eroding the rights of farmers and restricting our ability to run profitable businesses. So you will see Federated Farmers Northland taking an even stronger leadership role and fighting for the rights of our people. “We have a really strong team representing Federated Farmers Northland thanks to the work of former president, and now vice-president, John Blackwell over recent years. “On the back of that, people will be hearing a lot more from us in the leadup to local body elections next year. That’s because our local councillors need to hear our concerns and better represent and protect farmers from onerous government regulations being forced on rural New Zealanders.” Federated Farmers is New Zealand’s leading independent rural advocacy organisation. It aims to add value to the business of farming for members while encouraging sustainability through good management focussing on the issues of the day impacting rural New Zealand.

Design key to effluent control

Design is a key component of the modern world, be it a building, a road, a bridge, or even a chair. How something inanimate can look attractive keeps many a creative busy.

Design makes dairy operation easier
However, what about that old standby on a dairy farm — the cowshed? Here, good design means efficient operation, and particularly where effluent is concerned. A well-situated and designed farm milking operation means efficiency of operation. Keeping milk away from contamination, of course, is a no-brainer. Design can also deal efficiently with that effluent byproduct that has to be dealt with. That starts with keeping the area easy to clean and maintain. The fall of the land is an important consideration so effluent can flow via gravity. The alternative is pumping, which is expensive, and it depends on reliable machinery components, and of course, a reliable power source at all times. Food Safety regulations for the dairy industry,
notably the Farm Dairy Code of Practice NZCP1, require all floors of the farm dairy to be made of concrete or impervious material 10 metres from the milk storage room, receiving room and edges of the pit or milking platform. The minimum recommended fall for yards is one metre in 50, with all other areas one in 80 metres capable of being readily cleaned. In the case of yards and yard races, the shed needs to have a kerb that is a minimum of 150mm above the level of the yard surface. At yard entrances, the kerbs can be as low as 50mm. A kerb prevents soil and dung being washed over the sides of yards and yard races. At these places, there is often poor drainage due to the persistent stock and vehicle loads.

HERD HOMES DRAIN CLEANING
Lack of drainage will cause pugged and foul conditions, create odours and attract flies. Regulations require that there must be no ponding on farm races within 45m of the farm dairy. In the milk storage and collection area, the details go on, and food safety regulations are easily found in the Farm Dairy Code of Practice NZCP1. So the days of a couple of cow bales in a timber shed are long gone, and complex design requirements have become the rural standard.

Protect your whānau, staff and farm business Vaccinate against COVID-19 What rural communities do best is look out for each other and deal with adverse events. Living and working in isolation doesn’t exempt anyone from the repercussions of COVID-19, and farmers understand the vital role vaccines play in controlling disease and promoting health. Use your understanding of science to support those who are vaccine-hesitant to roll up their sleeves. If anyone on your farm gets COVID-19, there will be a domino effect that includes: • The infected person will need to go to a quarantine facility • The farm will become a location of interest • It will require a deep clean • Other workers will become close contacts and will need to isolate.
To minimise COVID-19 coming on farm: -
Display entry conditions on COVID-19 posters and COVID-19 QR code posters Encourage all workers and visitors to download and use the NZ COVID Tracer app Cough and sneeze into your elbow Wash your hands regularly Maintain appropriate physical distancing Ensure face coverings are worn when external service providers come on farm If you or your staff feel unwell and have symptoms, call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 and GET TESTED VACCINATE – Go to www.northlanddhb.org.nz for information on clinics near you or book via www.bookmyvaccine.nz
Let’s make Christmas unstoppable.
To ensure you are fully immunised by December, you and your team need to have your first dose by Labour Day (25 October).

Besides protecting yourself, getting vaccinated is also the right thing to do for the other people in our community. There are some people who can’t have the vaccine because of their health. So if we do it, we’ll be helping to protect them too. I’ve had my first shot, and so has my fiancé and two teenagers - which was a very interesting family outing! We had no idea what to expect, but it was easy. You were in and out very fast. It didn’t hurt - I thought to myself, “did I even get it?” I highly recommend booking in to get vaccinated at the pharmacy or your GP. Otherwise, walk-in at a community or local Māori Health Provider clinic! It is painless and so easy! Please don’t be someone in Northland who isn’t vaccinated – let’s be united against COVID-19.” Baden Rudkin – Farm Manager, Ōhaeawai

ADVERTORIAL
Glenbrook Romneys offer better genetics Glenbrook Romneys made the commitment in the late 1960s to develop better genetics for farmers. They were early members of the ARDG, a group of innovative and forward-thinking ram breeders dedicated to lifting Romney genetics. The group is now in its 53rd year of industry leadership. During the 1970s, flock losses from facial eczema, particularly in the north of the North Island, were between 30 and 40 per cent. The non-clinical effects of FE damage were even more widespread and continue to be far-reaching, with production losses difficult to identify. Glenbrook Romneys started FE testing in 1983 at a level of 0.10, along with some field trials. Jenny and Adrian Savannah took over the Glenbrook Romney flock in 2015 from Jenny’s father, Stuart Williams, and continue to strive for the best Romney genetics. Today the rams are dosed at 0.67 and have been for the last three years. They have been FE Gold accredited since its inception. The FE tolerance in the flock is exceptional. The focus, whilst continuing to increase this trait, has encompassed
the other leading health and production concerns for sheep farmers. Parasites are a key health concern for sheep farmers, and undetected drench resistance in New Zealand could be costing $50 million annually. Using breeding as part of your parasite management programme is imperative. Worm resistance and resilience are key traits that Glenbrook Romneys evaluate. Their flock is now accredited as WormFEC Gold standard. This level is only afforded to those meeting the highest levels of testing and evaluation. Glenbrook Rams are evaluated in SIL using New Zealand Maternal Worth, which encompasses survival, growth, reproduction, adult size, wool and meat yield, along with facial eczema and worm FEC. All sheep are DNA tested for absolute accuracy of their breeding values. You can find out more on ardg. co.nz or contact Jenny and Adrian on the details within the advertisement.

Time for road user charge overhaul by Andy Bryenton
Our current road user charges system makes an assumption that’s as out of date as rotary dial phones and cassette tapes; that all nonpetrol powered vehicles less than 3.5 tonnes in weight are made the same. However, times have changed, and in a very real way, this could be harming the environment. That is because, at the passenger car end of the scale, there’s a dirty little secret that very few people are talking about. Diesel vehicles of this size are cleaner than their petrol counterparts. Diesel conjures up images of black clouds of smoke, giant locomotives and container ships, and big rigs on the highway. The reality is quite different; small diesel engines fitted to small cars are popular in Europe, not among those who drive for the thrill of it, admittedly, but among those who drive to be frugal and, yes, to be environmentally conscious. Although both petrol and diesel engines convert chemical energy into mechanical power by burning fuel, they do so in different ways. A diesel engine should, in principle, use less fuel and produce less carbon dioxide than a petrol engine with the same power output. If it’s tuned correctly, it does. If it’s fitted with modern particulate filters, then the secondary issue with diesel, its tendency to produce smoke, is removed. You can buy a small and efficient diesel that will produce less CO2 than its petrol counterpart and could get you 21
Small diesels may produce less carbon than petrol engines; just one reason RUC billing is out of date
kilometres for every litre of fuel. However, buy one and you’ll be stung for $76 for every 1,000 kilometres, the same as if you bought a three-tonne monster SUV. Of course, you could go electric, if the infrastructure in your part of the nation is up to it and your range anxiety permits. Then you’ll pay no RUCs at all. Which begs
the question; where will the money to repair our already awful roads come from when everyone’s plugging in instead of using the pump? Perhaps they’ll let them deteriorate even more and drop the speed limits again. We’re down to 40km/h on some roads already; in the future, it will be quicker to buy a horse.
Then again, a lot of issues could be solved by adding two new, cheaper RUC instalments. One for small passenger diesel cars under two litres, and one for electric vehicles. If the powers that be really want people in electric cars, they should offer government-backed interestfree loans to buy them and charge fairly for their use.

The twins are back by Andy Bryenton
Fresh off the success of the new Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 joint venture, Toyota has once again revealed its penchant for partnership, teaming up for a second time with Subaru to reinvent the sporty little 86. Imagined as a driver’s car when it debuted, the 86 took its name from the legendary Hachiroku Sprinter of the 1980s. A car immortalised not just by a dedicated track-day fandom in Japan but also in comic books and movies. Subaru added its know-how with boxer-layout engines to the mix to enable Toyota to drop the little car’s centre of gravity. Combined with narrow tyres, this produced the kind of driving experience that lit up smiles at even moderate speeds. Subaru made a near-identical looking BRZ model out of the partnership. Fast-forward to the present day, and a new joint venture is set to deliver the 2022 revision of both cars. First out of the blocks is the Toyota GR 86, with that ‘GR’ indicating that this is another project from Gazoo Racing, the flat-out high speed, high-performance division that acts as Toyota’s AMG. The new car looks great, with a more rounded appearance hinting more at the old classic Celica GT4 than the boxy 86 of yesteryear. Under the hood, there’s an extra 28 horsepower to be had from a fresh 2.4-litre boxer four, naturally aspirated for sharp response. In fact, everything about the 86 remains sharp in an industry where
sophomore designs often suffer from middle-aged spread. A six-speed manual gearbox remains the standard option to deliver power from the engine to the rear wheels, in a classic driver’s-car layout, and if you choose this option, there’s something else you’ll notice. Unlike in many modern cars, where electronic safety systems curb your enthusiasm, there’s a distinct lack of interference between you and the road here in the 86. With the auto trans, you’ll get the full modern wrap-around of safety reminders and nudges, but with a stick shift, it’s you and the car, following a pattern set by the original 86 and BRZ. Throughout history, it’s often been the small sports cars that have caught our imaginations rather than their bigger, bulkier and more powerful stablemates. Light and nimble often does the trick where bulk and ferocity doesn’t, and that’s the recipe for the new GR 86. If the new Supra, with its big six, is Toyota’s performance flagship, then this is the Japanese firm’s fast and agile little frigate, delivering more driving fun for every dollar.
Toyota’s 86 returns for 2022, with the GR badge indicating higher performance

The power of six
by Andy Bryenton
With emissions standards and petrol prices squeezing out the last of the big V8s, many automakers are considering a path to the future that takes a new look at an old classic. The straight-six configuration has given us some of the greatest cars in history, from the first ever-supercar, the Mercedes 280 gullwing coupe, to the Nissan Skyline Godzilla and Toyota Supra. With a new Supra and its BMW counterpart flying the flag for this tried and true engine layout, is it possible that we’re about to see a new golden era for the straight-six? In fluent petrol-geek speak, the big advantage of the straight-six is refinement. With every cylinder performing a combustion stroke paired with another undergoing an exhaust stroke, often exactly opposite on the axis of the crankshaft, these engines are silky smooth by comparison to a lumpy V8 or V6. Refinement is the reason Jaguar picked this layout for its XK series of sports cars, which began the era of roadgoing speed and comfort, and why BMW chose a six for the powerplant of its game-changing M1. By the 1970s, Chrysler’s straight-six in the Charger was giving Ford GTHO Phase III muscle cars a run for their money, with 14 second quarter miles. Add turbocharging to the mix, and things get even more interesting. That harmonic balance and a simple layout mean that massive power can be tuned

With emissions issues squeezing big V8s out of contention, it looks like straight-six engines with advanced forced induction could take lightness and power to new levels
from a six-cylinder set-up. Look at the blistering performance of BMW’s sixpot turbo cars, or that aforementioned classic Skyline. Then there’s the bluecollar hero, the Ford Barra six, which was made initially as a big lazy four-litre highway cruiser but has been proven to handle 1,000 horsepower, with massive turbochargers on the side. Then there’s the matter of space. The straight-six used to be reserved for cars with a bonnet you could land a helicopter on; such was its length. However, now,

with better materials technology and the ability to run engine components such as power steering pumps and aircon away from the front of the block, there are smaller spaces where a proper six can fit. All of this matters because the end of the V12 is possibly at hand, and big, brash V8s may soon follow. Carmakers looking for better handling, less weight and similar power can’t help but look at the 2JZ Toyotas and XJ6 Jaguars of the past, with an eye for crafting internal combustion’s next, more frugal phase.
