Visa criteria for the dairy trainee and dairy manager categories have changed with entrants now eligible to enter as long as they hold a valid New Zealand work visa at the time of entry, at each stage of judging and have been employed full-time for two years on a New Zealand dairy farm when entries open. “This reflects the multicultural landscape of dairy employees,” says general manager of NZDIA, Chris Keeping. “We are excited by these changes and intrigued to see who will enter because of them. We have also removed the qualifications clause in the dairy trainee category — where a potential entrant could not have completed an NZQA level five or higher qualification in any field of study. “These changes acknowledge the awards programme as a learning
platform where people can learn and grow, both personally and professionally. We do not want to cut out a large chunk of potential dairy trainee entrants just because of previous study.” The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards is supported by national sponsors Westpac, DeLaval, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra Farm Source, Honda Motorcycles, LIC, Meridian Energy and Ravensdown along with industry partners DairyNZ and Primary ITO. Entries for the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards now open earlier than previously, on October 1 and close earlier on November 16, enabling entries to be finalised before the Christmas break. Entries for the 2019 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards can be made via dairyindustryawards.co.nz from October 1, 2018.

Strengthening animal welfare New regulations to strengthen our animal welfare system will come into effect on October 1, 2018. Ministry for Primary Industries director for animal health and welfare, Dr Chris Rodwell, says the 45 new regulations cover a range of species and activities from stock transport and farm husbandry procedures to companion and working animals like dogs and horses. “With under a month to go until these new regulations come into effect, we want to encourage people, who are responsible for any type of animal, to check they are up to date in how they are looking after them. “Our team has been working with industry and sector groups to raise awareness of the regulations and ensure people understand and can meet their responsibilities. Most New Zealanders already care for their animals well, so if you are already doing the right thing, you won’t see a lot of change. “The majority of the regulations reflect existing standards, but there are a few that do set new rules and requirements, such as prohibiting the tail docking of cows and dogs. Even if you already think you are doing the right thing, it is best to check and make sure you are.” One of the main changes is that the new regulations will make it easier for MPI and the SPCA to take action

against animal mistreatment. “These regulations will allow us to better respond to lower levels of offending, and target specific behaviours that need to change. For example, if people allow their animal’s horns to become ingrown, they
can be fined $500. We will continue to prosecute the worst offenders under the Animal Welfare Act.” In developing the regulations, current science, good practice and the views of submitters were taken into consideration.

PETFOOD BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Business partners Amber Cordero and Jacqueline Taylor created The New Zealand Natural Pet Food Co out of a desire to give pets a complete healthy raw diet.
“W
e started researching and developing our pet food idea in 2016 and launched the company in 2017. We knew what was missing in pet food and wanted to provide animals with good wholesome nutrition. We produced ‘WOOF’ for dogs and ‘MEOW’ for cats,” says Jacqueline. “As pet parents, we saw that the ingredients in most pet food included flavourings, colourings, additives and
numbers on the packaging that we didn’t understand. We wanted to be able to read the label and know the food is nutritious.” The ladies set out to create a healthy range and be 100 per cent transparent ensuring the food they provide had easily readable packaging. “I have my adopted poodle Niuniu, and Amber has two cats. We want them to have the best nutrition possible

because when you choose to give an animal a forever home, it is up to you to ensure their well-being. “We use human-grade ingredients and combine fresh, raw food and utilise a gentle freeze-drying process, which protects all the natural enzymes and goodness. Only the water is removed — none of the wholesome goodness is cooked out, so all nutrients remain in the food, including the taste. “Amber is a biologist and has done a lot of nutritional study. We completed our testing and research with Massey University and had help and support from Mark the owner of Franklin Vets as well as our distributors Kahu Vets. “We did trials with Dr Kym Shrimpton from Acupet Integrative Veterinary Care and Clare Kearne, a Holistic Animal Nutritionist, went through all the recipes to check the health benefits of each ingredient.” The products are MPI approved, and E Certified for export. There are six recipes available in the WOOF range including Lamb, Chicken, Wild Brushtail, Wild Venison, Duck and Beef. “Wild Brushtail is possum, it eats only the finest food, including a variety of leaves, fresh shoots, berries and grasses. The meat is a high-quality protein that contains higher levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids than other red meats. This meat has important inflammatory properties, which is great for animals with sensitivities. We have seen skin changes, hair regrowth and all sorts of positive results during our testing. If dogs have allergies it is
normally from chicken or beef — wild venison is also good for allergies. “It is a good choice for farm dogs too, as it certainly is full of goodness to help keep working dogs healthy. “We have visited a few Asian countries where the dogs are allergic to many products, and our wild meats are really popular there as it is uncommon meat, so they haven’t built up allergies.” MEOW for cats is in the launching stage. “We have Chicken and Salmon, Lamb and Hoki and a Beef and Hoki. These provide the same health benefits for our feline friends. Because the food is dehydrated, you add water or use it as a dry kibble making sure there is a good fresh water supply available.” Jacqueline says the pets don’t require as much food because they don’t use fillers, colours, flavours or other nasties — it is all pure food. “You will notice the animals’ stools become a lot smaller because they don’t have as much waste to get rid of. One dog in the trials of Wild Brushtail was visiting the vet monthly to get his ears cleaned and checked as they were constantly sore and inflamed. After the six-week food trial, the condition was gone. “Changing foods meant cost-saving on vet bills for the owners, and the dog was much happier in itself — it was completely transformed. “We love seeing the results and knowing animals love eating it. At the end of the day, we want to be doing something meaningful for household

Cats and dogs are catered for with the natural pet food Amber and Jacqueline have created pets. My cat has her MEOW dry as she is used to kibble, and she loves this. Having a variety of flavours means you can change it up from time to time. “The 320g bag equates to 1.2kg of food and the 1.2kg bag equates to 4.8kg. It can also be used as treats in the dry form. WOOF and MEOW are manufactured with locally-
sourced ingredients. We are distributed through some 35 vet clinics across New Zealand, and you can purchase it online. Check us out at nznaturalpetfood.com. “We are excited to improve thousands of pets’ lives throughout New Zealand and overseas.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
THE FRENCH
BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Frenchman Clement Lafon is a qualified mechanical engineer who speaks French, Spanish and English, and moved to New Zealand in 2013 and changed his career path to farming.
“I
grew up on a farm in France and in my last year of University had to do my last year overseas, so chose to come to New Zealand and settled in Auckland to begin with,” says Clement. “I travelled a bit and became a woofer on a dairy farm and then got employed as a farm hand on that property. In 2014 the share milker employed me as a farm assistant, and then I moved here to Whangarei as herd manager/assistant and progressed into farm management.” Clement is 26 years old and manages the 540 cow jersey herd. He is a member of the local Young Farmers Club and says entering the organisation’s competitions is the best way to learn and helps progress his career. “I also worked in Africa for a hydraulic
pump maintenance company and the experience gave me skills, which are handy on a farm, especially for maintaining the machinery like tractors. “Our cows are rated every year by Jersey NZ and our stock are mostly grass fed with maize silage, hay and PK when necessary and we feed turnips for our summer crop.” The 222 hectare property is flat to rolling and there is also a 70 hectare runoff. “We are spring calving and we use our own Jersey bulls and keep the heifers - we do contract mating through our relationship with Jersey NZ. We have high BW bulls and had one of the best bulls for breeding. “Our genetics are top-quality and I have gained a lot of knowledge from

being here. The farm I grew up on in France was cropping - we didn’t have animals. “I am progressing my way through the job and my partner works on another dairy farm - she is a kiwi girl and really enjoys farming too. “We own a few cows together and we invest in stock to be able to build our equity. The 20-year-plan is to own our own dairy farm and a sheep and beef block.” Clement has competed in Young Farmers three times and regionals twice. “I have met many great farmers that have helped me progress and I read the farming papers and do a lot of study on the industry, join discussion groups and travel to relevant events around Northland. “We have a lot of older farmers come to our club and talk about things like animal health, systems and financials.” Clement says he takes the best information from each person he meets and uses this knowledge to his advantage. “The club and the competition helps you learn. It is hard working long hours - sometimes we don’t get home before 7pm each night. Calving during winter can be wet and you can get depressed, but Young Farmers facilitates a once a month off-farm meal and we chat about positive things. It is great for people who can sometimes be isolated - I really encourage everyone to join.” Clement believes females competing in farming competitions is encouraging,
as they show other girls that farming is a career opportunity not just for males. “I believe they can be way more calmer with animals and more passionate at times, and can be just as successful as the men. “Farming here is very different compared to France. From pasture management and having the cows outside instead of in barns. I tried to make cheese in France but didn’t really succeed. Some farmers make their own cheese and some just sell the milk. A lot of dairy farmers sell by the litre and sell the cream separately for cheese and butter and the rest on volume, as it gives them a good dollar value for their product. “In France there are more automatic robotic machines, but in New Zealand there is more opportunity. Farming here is seen as a positive career, but in France, I believe it is looked down upon by university graduates, which is sad. “There is respect in New Zealand for the industry, you are not classed as a lower-class citizen. “I love that it is possible to do what you love - drive tractors, do animal husbandry in general, fencing, building maintenance, and pasture management. Everyday it is different and that is exciting. “We treat our cows with respect and look after them, and breed the best cows I can. For me dairy farming is a great way to build my career, and competing is one of the best ways to learn more in general and I think that is important.”
Clement encourages young farmers to enter competitions for experience and to gain further industry knowledge Proudly serving Northland for over 35 Years

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Silverhill Alpacas owner Valerie Bushell relocated her Alpaca family from the Wellsford area to Tinopai as lack of space was impacting on her much-loved animals.
“I
bit the bullet and purchased 12 hectares and now have extra-happy alpacas that are all together on one property,” says Valerie. “It is a work in progress as I am still establishing extra fencing, building the barn and adding more water troughs.” Alpacas are part of the Camelid family, and Valerie discovered them when she brought her last property and needed something to maintain the grass. “I read an article on how good they are and brought two wethers. You always need a minimum of two or three because they are social.” Like many Alpaca owners, Valerie added to her herd and they kept producing babies, and now the herd consists of 75 animals. “They have up to a 12-month gestation,
and I am concentrating on producing quality fibre. Within four generations I have managed to breed fine-wool animals. I have a website and sell wool and knitted items. “I do some knitting myself and have a lady knit for me. I also purchase dyed wool from Peru and Australia for variety. “The animals are very hardy with amazing individual personalities, some are social whilst others are shy. It is fascinating to watch them. The boys can have too much testosterone and have their spats. The girls are gentle and come up to see what is happening.” Valerie’s herd don't have many foot rot or fly strike problems. “I keep a close eye on them — flies and other insects can be extreme when humidity is high. Alpacas are like

a sheep and graze grass down close to the soil, and they are susceptible to parasites such as barber’s pole worm, so it is best to graze them with cows and rotate paddocks. “They like hay as it is dry and gives them roughage. They enjoy lucerne chaff and alpaca pellets. They are susceptible to facial eczema, and the pellets are coated with zinc, which helps combat FE. Kikuyu is good as it doesn’t die off in the summer. It is the dead vegetation matter at the base of other grasses like rye that have the FE spores.” Camelids are great foragers, and owners have to ensure the trees they have access to are not poisonous. Rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas are all toxic to livestock as is ragwort and Ngaio. “They do spit but not on purpose, most times they’ll be spitting when another animal is trying to get their food. One may spit at the other and miss as they aren’t good at aiming, so you end up wearing it. “They are induced ovulators, so you don't have to wait for them to come into season. You bring the male in, and two weeks later you bring him back, and if she is pregnant, she will spit at him to go away as she doesn’t need him. Sixty days after mating you can get them scanned or bring the male back to see if she retained the pregnancy as they are known to lose babies during that time. Again, she should spit at him if she is still pregnant.” Valerie says they can have breech births or legs getting stuck. The cria (baby) are usually up and walking within
an hour and suckling by three hours. “The mothers are protective, but you need to get iodine on their navel to prevent infections. Some will bunt you, but others just grizzle to say ‘leave my baby alone’. “I very much believe animals have feelings and am adamant they show grief and happiness — kicking their heels up when happy, crying when sad.” They are usually fully-grown by two years old, and females can mate around 14 months. Males take two to three years to become sexually mature. “I contract Mike Banks from Christchurch to shear once a year, he is one of the best in the country. “My herd is quite big, but there are some in the hundreds in New Zealand. They are the same stocking rate as sheep, five per acre, and they go to poo piles, so it is best to pick up the piles regularly to reduce the threat of parasites. “I offer farm tours, and people really seem to enjoy this. They like the opportunity to interact with the animals, take photos and feed them or just stand and let the alpaca check them out. “One day I hope to offer alpaca walks through the paddocks, but first I need to finish getting the infrastructure in place and get more of my alpacas halter-trained. “I have noticed that family traits get handed down such as one girl likes putting her feet in the water trough, as did her mother. Alpacas are beautiful animals and well worth discovering, especially if you want variety on your land.”

Questionable changes by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland
Changes to the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) Act 2012 have been recently rammed through parliament under urgency by this coalition government, and there is at least one aspect of that act that needs to be treated with real concern by farmers.

The changes bolster the bid to eradicate the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis. It makes it compulsory to declare all animal movements to NAIT and hold to account everyone who fails to do so. All well and good, and the act deservedly gets wide support from the farming community — which is why one other change to the act is completely unfathomable, unnecessary and untenable. These changes also include giving the Ministry for Primary Industries the sweeping power to search farmers properties without a search warrant. The question I must ask as a farmer and — yes — as a former police officer who prepared and executed many search warrants, is — why? Why does this government feel the necessity to give farmers fewer rights than hardened criminals? A search warrant is required to search gang headquarters but not now apparently a farm. The government could not explain why they found it necessary to deprive one sector of society — farmers — of a fundamental right that even gangs are accorded.
No one questions the need to muster all the resources we can to eradicate M bovis. In doing so, to trample all over the rights of a farming community already reeling under its impact defies logic let alone compassion. It also, I believe, shows a lack of understanding of, and trust in, the farming community by this government. What the wider public needs to remember here is that this is not just a person’s business, it’s also their home. Families should be able to go about their daily life without the fear of clipboard warriors turning up at their front door unannounced to conduct a search. Yet, for some unfathomable reason, this government deems farmers to be different. I am the National spokesman for rural communities and a beef farmer myself, and this concerns me greatly. Is this erosion of rights — which affects only the rural sector, an indication of this current government’s attitude towards our rural communities? I hope not. However, the question has to be asked.

The Productivity Commission has recommended that up to 2.8 million hectares of trees are planted to achieve New Zealand’s carbon neutrality by 2050. Whatever species are used, this would nearly triple our planted forest estate. It represents the biggest land use change since we first lost most of our indigenous forest cover. It would be the biggest project ever undertaken by a New Zealand government, certainly since the 1870s. We’ve always grown trees for their timber. From now, trees are also to be grown in the global battle against climate change. The government, together with iwi, farmers and the public, will need to get this right for our very environmental and economic survival. The challenge is huge.

Disposing of plastic wastes
BE FLY FREE THIS SUMMER WITH OUR UNIQUE MAGNETIC INSECT SCREENS
With silage bale wrap and plastics scattering the countryside as some people leave the packaging where it was last used, the importance of disposing of such items to keep the environment healthy is a much spoken about topic. Many products are packaged in or made of plastic including agrichemical containers, silage wrap, and vine netting and can be a nuisance as they start to accumulate — but recycling is very easy. Northland Regional Council says to recycle chemical containers triple-rinse them with water and put this water into your mixing tank to dispose of. Plasback Services is a farm plastic wastes recycler, and they will take your triple rinsed agrichemical containers, bale net, pit covers and feed bags. They pick-up by arrangement and in the Far North silage wrap can be dropped off at the Kaitaia Resource Recovery Centre. For more information, freephone 0508 338 240 or visit plasback.co.nz. Agrecovery take containers, and these can be picked up by arrangement or empty, triple-rinsed chemical containers can be dropped at their brand members; Clean Streams — Kaitaia, Farmlands — Dargaville, PGG Wrightsons — Waipapa and Farmlands in Kamo. For more information, phone 0800 247 326 or visit agrecovery.co.nz. The only alternative to recycling your empty chemical containers is taking them to an approved landfill — local tips can’t accept them, and burning

or burying them on-farm is illegal in Northland. Silage wrap has made storage for bales convenient, and although this is the beauty of them, the wrap has become unbeautiful and created an environmental issue with many people leaving the waste in the paddocks causing an unappreciated toxic mess. Silage wrap can be recycled — keep it clean by removing it from the paddock to dry storage immediately after use and dispose of it as soon as you can. Burning silage wrap is prohibited in Northland and could result in a fine or prosecution under the Resource Management Act. Bur ying silage wrap is not recommended, as it takes a very long
time to break down in a farm dump. If you must bury it, the general rule is no waste may be buried within 50m of a boundary with another property, or within 50m of any water body. The pit must also be capped — so that runoff can’t get into the buried waste and cause leachate. If silage wrap is dirty and can’t be recycled, it can be landfilled as general refuse through your local waste service provider. It is often more economical than burying waste on your own land when you consider the costs of labour, digging and the loss of useable land for future generations. Sales boost for Just Avocados Just Avocados’ Australian retail channel has grown by 55% during the past three seasons, and a further boost to this has been announced for the 2018–19 season with the specialist avocado packer and exporter to now supply a major Australian retailer directly. “We are excited to announce we have direct vendor status with Australian retail — which allows us to place a significant volume into this channel,” says Jacob Darling, general manager group sales and marketing for Darling Group — the parent brand to Just Avocados, JH Leavy & Co and Avoworks. Jarrod Redwood, general manager operations and grower services for Just Avocados, says this development will benefit their growers. “This season, 65% of our Australian programme will go direct to retail — this is a more streamlined transaction with cost savings,” says Redwood. Additionally, according to Darling, Just Avocados is positioned to see more value retained from Australian exports by utilising newly approved facilities at JH Leavy & Co.
“Our team in Australia has launched a third-party logistics division with inspection and treatment facilities. “This development will remove time delays and costs in the supply chain for our growers as we can receive our containers directly from the port and inspect and treat them ourselves. This increases the speed of our fruit to market — which reduces quality issues through minimising stock age.” Overall, according to Darling, the market outlook is positive for the start of the New Zealand export season. Darling Group’s strategy is for strong volumes early in the season into the Asian markets and to then optimise the late season Australian window. “In 2017–18, we shipped 24% of our volume to Asia, versus the industry at 19%. This strategy proved successful

with leading export returns for Just Avocados growers. Currently, 95% of our volume for the 2018–19 season to date has been shipped to Asia — Korea and Thailand,” says Darling. Redwood explains that with a valuable early Asian market and a time premium payment for fruit harvested
late season for the Australian market, Just Avocados offers options to suit a range of grower needs while meeting market requirements. “We are committed to providing a model that allows flexibility around harvest and rewards growers for holding fruit from week 50 onwards.”

Protecting your crops Growers are urged to be extra vigilant with the recent spate of fruit thefts happening around the country, particularly with avocado crops. NZ Avocado has received recent reports of avocado theft from orchards in Bay of Plenty and Northland and growers are encouraged to report thefts and any unusual activity in their area to the police as soon as possible — if you see something, say something. The police recommend all growers be extra vigilant and take steps to prevent theft, including increasing security around your orchard. If you witness any suspicious behaviour contact your neighbouring orchards to ensure they are also keeping a lookout. If a theft takes place, people are encouraged to report all instances and if you are a witness at the time of theft call the police emergency line on 111 immediately. Take as many details as you can of the thieves including their appearance and any vehicles and vehicle registration numbers; however, your safety should be your primary concern and do not put yourself in harm’s way. If you discover fruit has been stolen or have had fruit stolen recently and have not yet reported it, contact your local police station. If you are approached by anyone trying to sell car boot loads or large amounts of avocados, take a description of the person and their vehicle registration and report this as well. To help protect your fruit and crops consider installing security cameras. If you are unable to do this, install signage
as a deterrent that says the orchard is under surveillance. Installing a driveway alarm to alert you of people entering your property is also an option and keep any gates to the orchard locked or install an electronic pin code gate. Regularly walk around your property and stay alert of anything unusual or potential risk areas that you
may want to address and use your phone to take photos if you do see anything suspicious. Theft prevention signs can be ordered by emailing jo.nunn@nzavocado.co.nz — two signs per PPIN.

Owned and operated by Warren Vuletich and his son Eden, the company is based in Whangarei and provide their services from the Kaipara district to the Far North. “Dad has more than 20 years’ experience in the automotive engineering industry and maintains all our equipment to the highest standard,” says Eden. Upon leaving school, Eden had a clear vision that his passion was agricultural contracting and he wanted to work in the family business and he gained valuable skills and experience while working in Western Australia. “I have spent three seasons working in Western Australian operating large seeding and spraying equipment on a 10,000 hectare cropping programme consisting of wheat, barley, oats, canola and lupins,” says Eden. “Farming relies on the weather and timing is of great importance, the window of opportunity for optimum crop preparation, planting and harvest is often narrow. There is a great
importance in using new technology to help farmers grow their business, and we have invested in GPS self-steering technology to allow 24/7 operation when the conditions are right.” This technology guarantees accuracy — ensuring minimum overlap and increased productivity. “We have recently purchased an Amazone UF1501 mounted crop protection sprayer. It has a 15 metre radar distance controlled boom, five auto section shut off and rate controller
reducing chemical overlap for more precision spraying. Proof of placement and 100 per cent coverage is guaranteed thanks to the TopCon GPS Autosteer. “We take pride in our work and every client is important to us no matter how big or small their request is and we welcome new customers.” Contact Eden on 021 0842 6587, Warren on 0273 914 777 or the office on 09 433 1733. Options for crop preparation When it comes to changeable or unhelpful weather farmers are known to be resilient, and planning a schedule of planting and pasture prep helps remove a lot of stress. Wet weather can leave a short period of time to accomplish a host of tasks, and for many people, the focus is on producing a bountiful crop of maize or green pasture to ensure there is enough feed for their animals. Often hiring a local contractor is a good option as they know the processes and can get the job accomplished in a relatively short time frame, and have the relevant machinery. It will allow you to focus on other important tasks. If you are doing the work yourself, ensure that all your equipment is serviced and ready for productivity. Preparation for undersowing on cattle farms, or getting ready to cultivate maize and bringing in silage for the upcoming season all require reliable equipment to

save precious time and inconvenience if equipment breaks down. Be aware that if the soil is damp or wet, the machinery used for aeration and harrowing, to turn the soil and prepare it for a fresh crop can cause compacting so it is best left until the ground dries out enough to take the weight of the equipment. Northland is known to have hard to access pastureland and paddocks, even for the big trucks, which deliver fertiliser. Smaller mini spreaders have become popular as they are lighter on the ground and able to get to more inconvenient places. Helicopter and fixed-wing aerial applicators are also often used to deliver fertiliser onto the necessary areas. Often contractors use the latest

Preparing seed beds
IN STOCK NOW!
When preparing to sow new seed, there are a number of key steps to consider including sowing date, seedbed quality, sowing depth and seed ground coverage. PALM KERNEL TRAILERS
The sowing date affects pasture establishment, yield and persistence and this is particularly important in summer-dry areas, as sowing early allows individual plants more time to develop and reach more than 20 tillers in size, prior to a potentially dry summer. Later sowing in cooler autumn conditions means slower establishment due to the cooler temperatures, and greater potential to pug and damage new pastures in winter and spring. Sowing early in the dry autumns, after February 25, in dry conditions with treated seed is easier for contractors, means faster establishment and more yield, and sets up better pasture persistence. In a recent trial in Cambridge, seed with novel endophyte — NEA2, sown in late February remained in the ground for more than six weeks without rain. Treatments sowed before the rain maintained a high endophyte level and grew 2t DM/ha more than seed sown post-rain — 5.8t DM/ha versus 3.8t, from May to October. At the Forage

Value Index value of 38c/kg DM for cool season pasture, that is $760/ha value added by sowing earlier. When preparing the soil, the goal is to produce a fine, firm, weed-free seedbed, ideal for plants to establish in. One factor often lacking is consolidation, which conserves moisture and makes it possible to achieve the right sowing depth. Research has shown sowing with a V-roller into a well-consolidated seedbed gave better white clover establishment than a poorly consolidated seedbed. When sowing ryegrass and white clover seed mixes, do so at a depth of 5–10mm to get the best establishment. White clover seed is small and sensitive to depth, and establishes much faster at this depth whilst ryegrass is less sensitive to sowing depth and still
establishes well when sown at 20mm. At a depth of 50mm — neither species establishes well. The exception to sowing shallow is in dry conditions when it is sometimes better to drill seed a little deeper into better soil moisture. In these conditions, white clover may struggle. A consolidated seedbed is critical to allow good depth control with a seed drill. In a soft seedbed, wheel tracks are pushed down, and coulter depths vary — leading to both uneven seed depth and establishment. There is no ‘correct’ ryegrass seed sowing rate for New Zealand farms. Both a standard and lower perennial ryegrass sowing rate can work well. More information can be found on the DairyNZ website under the feed/ pasture section.]

As a farmer I know what you need, including policies and procedures, monthly on-farm meetings and contractors’ agreements at highly competitive pricing,” says Annette. “When I became a dairy farmer nine years ago, I was horrified at the penalties farmers were incurring with the new law changes, staff lawsuits, and non-compliance and I decided to help businesses go forward without the worry of the paperwork. We design personal health and safety manuals and give advice and train staff on farms. We help identify farm hazards, and install reporting and recording processes.” Annette believes her farming clients can sleep better at night knowing they have put the effort in to help their business in these areas. “We don’t just give you the paperwork to flounder through. So you are getting married From invitation lists to shoes, dresses, attendants, photographer, venue hire, cakes, cars and flowers — preparing for your special day should be an exciting adventure to create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you get married in a church, grandma’s backyard or maybe beside the sea — a wedding takes planning and gone are the days of ‘expecting’ your parents to cover the costs. First and foremost it is best to set a budget that you are comfortable with rather than entering into the ‘first day of the rest of your life’ with a hideous debt. Consider the style of wedding you would like and what type of venue you need to be looking for to hold the ceremony and reception, if any. Once you decide ensure you check these personally and book them early to secure your date. Discuss with the chef or caterers on the style of food you desire or ideas they may have. Is there a ‘special’ something you may want in particular that is a favourite between you and your partner — maybe you would like to present him or her with their favourite cake. Choosing a photographer needs to be a priority. Check out websites and see what style photographs you like as this will help you in your decision on whom
to get for your memorable day. Flowers and cake are also important factors — are the flowers you want in season and do you want the traditional fruit cake, grandma’s secret recipe or maybe something exotic. Have you considered the candle lighting ceremony, dove releasing or starting a unique tradition of your own? The dress, shoes and headpiece are things you can involve special people in to be a part of if you wish. Once you choose your marriage celebrant, they can help you with
ceremony ideas and getting the marriage licence. You may want one attendant or ten; this is a personal choice as are all other factors for your special day. Who you have and what you do is entirely your decision, and you may be bombarded with other peoples’ helpful ‘advice’ — but you can decline ideas politely. Whether it is your first, second or even third marriage, create a day that is a treasure box of memories for you and your significant other for life — enjoy the moments and remember it is the one day that is actually ‘all about you’.

Create your day by Ann van Engelen
One of New Zealand’s award-winning, leading wedding photographers Danelle Bohane believes it is important couples make themselves the priority and have exactly what they desire on their wedding day. Danelle married the love of her life, Dirk Fourie, in June 2013 and they knew what they wanted on their ‘special day’ and accomplished exactly that. “I had my heart set on a day a little bit outside the norm, and we chose an intimate celebration in a beautiful location,” says Danelle. That ‘something’ was a large, cosy family dinner in the countryside, rather than the traditional style wedding. “It was a beautiful winter’s day with our closest friends and family, and our event absolutely suited our personalities. My photography is a part of who I am, and I am incredibly blessed to be doing what I love with Dirk alongside me appreciating the incredible nature we have been entrusted with as humans. “We would encourage you to have exactly what you want and what is special to you as a couple when you get married too. You will have so many people chime in over the time you are engaged and give their two cents worth of information. “Even with traditional elements, if you don’t want to do a cake cutting, you don’t have to, even if your auntie is shocked by the idea.
“For your photos — book early and find a photographer whose images you can imagine being in and the style you enjoy artistically — rather than telling them what style you want. Managing pest plants TaG Vegetation Control have been providing weed spraying services in Northland since 1983. Guy and Tracey Forbes have backgrounds in farming, horticulture and forestry and have owned the business since 2004. They have a fleet of spray rigs including 4WD utes for gun spraying, and larger trucks also fitted with booms designed for roadside and right-of-way spraying. “It’s no good just having good equipment — you also need to know how to use it — and we do,” says Guy. Tracey and Guy are both registered chemical applicators. The crew are also qualified and experienced in identifying pest plants and knowing how best to treat them. If the work site is on a public road and an approved traffic
management plan is needed — they can arrange and manage that too. “Our clients include farmers, small block owners, regional and district councils, forest managers, landscapers and road maintenance contractors. Northland is our home, and we work anywhere between Cape Reinga and Puhoi,” says Guy. “People have different reasons to control unwanted vegetation and eradicate weeds. “It may be to increase production or the value of your property, to maintain roads and water tables, or to restore or maintain revegetation and natural landscapes.
SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WORK MATES
“We know all the weed and pest plants people need to get rid of and how to treat them meaning whether you are a farmer or lifestyle block holder, you can leave the situation to us to deal with. We are available all year to contract spray and can come up with a weed management plan for a roadside, lifestyle block or farm to help overcome issues and we recommend
routine maintenance to prevent the reestablishment of pest plants. “By controlling pest plants, the land becomes more productive by allowing more pasture growth and quality feed for your stock.” Call TaG Vegetation Control to discuss your pest plant management plan or to make a booking on 09 407 6623 or email guyandtrace@xtra.co.nz.

ften it’s a losing battle to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage, says Murray Shaw of Prolan NZ.
“More often than not quadbikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. Therefore, it’s not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value.”
“In the NZ agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quadbike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware.
Plus agricultural fertiliser companies are also realising a coating of Prolan’s Enduro heavy grade protects truck and fertiliser loader’s chassis operating in harsh environments, says Murray.
“Once Prolan Enduro medium grade is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides longterm protection. “Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quadbike frames rust out within three years with no protection.

Young Farmer contest overhaul
New Zealand’s longest-running agricultural contest the FMG Young Farmer of the Year is set to undergo a major overhaul. Awards for the highest-scoring competitor in each of the five challenges — from agri-business to agri-skills — are being replaced with new awards assessing contestants’ skills and knowledge across innovation, food, people, environment and technology. The revamp is designed to entice more women to enter the iconic contest and to help showcase the country’s food story, and the TeenAg competition will be rebranded the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year. “We have just celebrated our 50th anniversary, which is an amazing achievement,” said Hinds dairy farmer and NZ Young Farmers Contest Board member, Cole Groves. “If we don’t make some major changes now, this contest won’t be relevant in another 50 years. We would like to inject a bit of excitement and unpredictability into the contest through the use of innovation.
“We are hoping the changes encourage more women to give the contest a go. We want to expand contestants’ knowledge beyond just fencing and identifying different types of fertiliser.” The contest will also be used to better tell New Zealand’s paddock to plate food story. “I think that can often get forgotten. There is a huge amount of public pressure on the primary industries at the moment. “We are all food producers and showcasing what we do is vital.” Organisers are keen to tap into innovation and technology being used and developed by sponsors. “There will still be a strong practical side to the contest, but our modules and challenges need to utilise technology more,” said Dannevirke banker and NZ Young Farmers Contest Board chair, Rebecca Brown. “In future contestants

The changes will start rolling out at regional finals across the country early next year.

A compliance solution by Ann van Engelen
Ruawai dairy farmer Colin Carter owns a property that is situated just above sea level — meaning it was impossible to build inground effluent storage.
C
olin grew up in West Auckland and completed a diploma in horticulture when he left school and became an orchardist quickly progressing from worker to manager, to owning his own orchard, and he then purchased a house cow — a sassy Ayrshire named Fancy. “In the early 1990s I changed to dairy farming and purchased a property in Mangawhai and a herd of Ayrshires — Fancy’s legacy,” says Colin. “The farm was sand-based and free draining but nutrient deficient — so 13 years later I sold and moved to the fertile flats of Ruawai — ‘the Waikato of the North’.” A very wet winter in 2017 saturated paddocks, a change of share milker and an ageing infrastructure all contributed to a challenging year and Colin spent time researching how to effectively solve his problems. “George Kruger from Fonterra came on board and proposed a massive effluent pond along with other improvements. I was concerned about an earth pond with my soil type, and in our discussions, I tabled an advertisement I found for KlipTank who were advertising above
ground ‘tank’ solutions.” Colin has a 300-cow herd, and the high water table in the area meant building an effluent storage pond was impossible. “Installing a Kliptank solved my effluent problem. In no time we had a state-of-the-art holding tank, with no concerns about leaching or seepage.” Colin’s friend, David Hart, with his many years of local farming and digger experience, managed the project and KlipTank dealt with council requirements for compliance. Made out of aluminium and polythene with a polypropylene liner — Kliptanks tolerate ground movement, moisture and soft soils like peat. Kliptank senior sales engineer, Ian Jamieson, said when you dug a hole on Colin’s farm it would fill with water. “You couldn’t get a liner in and if you did the groundwater would hydraulic it out,” says Ian. “Kliptanks is an above ground storage system — so they are particularly good in areas with soft and wet soils. Dave was a saint helping Colin work through the compliance processes. “Colin first contacted us on March 7, and we installed the tank in early May.
That was amazing being the middle of winter with very wet, soft ground. There were also a lot of difficult contours and other drainage problems that Dave worked with.” Dave is also a farmer and lives not far from Colin. “I have known Colin for about 10 years. His farm system was a bit broken, and his wet soils didn’t help. My property has a different soil type, so I don’t have the same issues, but I believe with changes the regional council are making, we could all suddenly find ourselves non-compliant,” he says. “I have been contracting since 1984 and enjoy helping others, especially
neighbours. Every different situation is experience and learning for me and boosts my knowledge. “It was a large, complex project and we had it ready for the start of the season. Colin gave me a free hand to implement my ideas. George from Fonterra was great with informing us what we needed to do. My primary job was to make it work, and it took a lot of thought — but everybody got the desired result, and it is positive for Colin and his farm. “I believe Kliptank is a great solution and the only way to go for those farms with soils that are difficult.”

An ambitious forestry plan
Forest owners say the Productivity Commission’s call for up to 2.8 million hectares of land to be turned into forests as a carbon sink would require implementing the most ambitious land use change project a New Zealand government has ever set itself.

“The scope of afforestation proposed to get New Zealand to carbon neutrality by 2050 would need a new-planting rate of 100,000 hectares a year, which has been achieved only once in New Zealand in recent times — in 1994,” says Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir. “The government would then have to maintain this planting rate for three decades to achieve the goal. It is vital that the government works closely with all landowning groups to ensure an efficient and equitable transition to an envisaged ‘decarbonised economy’. “A carbon price, with a transparent and realistic system of price setting, needs to be high enough to encourage change from current activities and land use, to forestry. The Productivity Commission escalated price projections are realistic in that respect.” Mr Weir says that he has a concern that there might be two ‘pools’ of methane accounting arising from the report. “It is likely to lead to a grandparented tradeable emission right for dairy farmers which is denied to sheep and beef farmers.” He says the vast afforestation envisaged by the Productivity Commission will need to incorporate
whole catchments to reach the target. “For a scheme of such a scale, we cannot afford to get either the environmental or the economic side wrong.” Farm Forestry Association president, Neil Cullen, believes the only sufficient land area to achieve the commission’s goal is to be found on farms. “Farmers will need to have access to the best advice on how to go about planting woodlots and so avoid the mistakes too prevalent in the past, such as poor planning for road access at harvest time. “That is not just a government job, but I believe farm organisations have a central role in helping the transformation of farm properties into an integrated land use operation with a substantial investment in forestry.” Neil Cullen says widespread planting for carbon fixing needs Peter Weir, Forest Owners Association president to focus on the species of trees — which are best at doing that in the efficient carbon capture in the relatively required timescale. short-term, that is to 2050; there is no “In the distant future, our new doubt that exotic trees, such as conifers indigenous forests will be locking up and eucalypts are the best candidates a lot of carbon. If you are to achieve for the job.”

Saving more than just water Visitors to the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek often stopped to take a look at the innovative display of a company called Simple Waste Water Solutions. Saving water — and helping save the planet — was always going to be a conversation starter, and the system was certainly sound. However, a big question was repeated over and over again. Would it work for dairy effluent? It was no surprise, as many of those asking were farmers, well aware of the strict regulations, which hedge around the treatment and reuse of effluent on the modern farm. An innovative approach was called for and spurred by that question; the Simple Waste Water masterminds got to work on a new endeavour. Last year, this company — Ideasun Ltd — attended Fieldays in the Grass Roots Innovation Hall to display a simple mock-up of the proposed system to gauge the public’s reaction. There was a certain amount of scepticism from some, but great support from the majority. With regional councils ready to throw their weight behind the idea, a plan was drawn up and submitted to Callaghan Investments, and a government grant was approved for trials to begin on a 200-cow dairy farm in the Whangaripo. The trials ran for six months and data was gathered concerning water usage and the finished product. What came from this exhaustive research and development was a simple grass roots concept able to be deployed with the minimum of expense and technicality on any farm. It’s called

the Clean Cow system, and it delivers staggering metrics. Water consumption dropped by 75% over conventional methods. The recycling of coolant and plant washdown water was achieved. The system returned filtered and decanted water clean enough to use in yard tipper drums, as well as returning worm castings and hydroponic crops from tunnel houses.
There’s even a return of filtered water, which is useful as a fertiliser. It’s a whole new way of dealing with effluent, designed here in New Zealand for our unique farming conditions. All you need to do to get on board is to contact the Ideasinc team and work out a perfect fit for your farm.

M Bovis farms share similar soils

by David Law — Forward Farming
The strongest evidence yet that Mycoplasma bovis does not flourish in well-balanced soil conditions has been confirmed at the farms that first tested positive for the disease.
Forward Farming helps farmers work with the Bio-CircleTM
Farms belonging to the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, which comprised 15,000 cows on a 4,133ha milking platform in South Canterbury, first tested positive for M bovis in July 2017, resulting in the culling of around 4,000 cows. The group was given the go-ahead to restock the affected farms after the compulsory stand-down period of 60 days but was warned by biological farming consultant David Law if the conditions in which the disease thrived were not rectified, it could reoccur. More than 100 soil tests were carried out across all van Leeuwen farms by Don Hart of Top Soils, and Law’s hypothesis was confirmed. “We found increasing evidence that the farms that had tested positive for M bovis all had the same characteristic — a low-pH soil, which is typically an imbalanced, minerally-depleted soil,” Law says. “In contrast, the soil tests taken on the farms clear of the disease showed a healthy pH of 6.3 — soil conditions M bovis doesn’t like. “This demonstrated a correlation between M bovis being present in imbalanced soils, and absent in healthy soils. The disease doesn’t

live in the soil per se, but, as an anaerobic bacterium, it generally only thrives in low-pH farm conditions.” As a result, the van Leeuwens have implemented short-and-long-term plans to rebalance the conditions on the affected farms to reduce the likelihood of M bovis returning. Law says his recommendations to Ministry for Primary Industries have not been actioned, leaving farmers in fear with no solution. Aad van Leeuwen agrees that MPI should have been more open-minded in their approach to finding a solution
for farmers. Law says with the valuable information gathered from Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, those involved in the wider working team are better able to help farmers directly rather than going through the government. “We welcome farmers to invite us to speak at discussion groups, where we can look at scenarios causing farmers anxiety, such as grazing young stock offfarm,” he says. “There are things farmers can do right now to greatly reduce the risk of M bovis flourishing on their farm; we are confident we can help.”

Positive beef growth Over the past year, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 1.9 per cent, while the decline in the sheep flock was slowed by a lift in hoggets as farmers responded positively to strong prices and good grass growth leading into winter. According to Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the annual stock number survey conducted by B+LNZ’s Economic Service also shows 3.7 million beef cattle — with beef production continuing to grow. The largest contributor to the increase in the number of beef cattle was a lift in weaner cattle in MarlboroughCanterbury, which was driven by younger cattle being retained by beef breeders. The research shows the impact of Mycoplasma bovis on sheep and beef farms has been mixed. B+LNZ Economic Service chief economist, Andrew Burtt, says the analysis reveals a younger ewe flock as farmers retain more hoggets for future production. The number of breeding ewes fell in all regions of New Zealand — and by 2.1 per cent overall. “The number of breeding ewes decreased 3.5 per cent to 8.3 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 0.8 per cent to 9.0 million. The decrease largely reflects farmers taking advantage of strong prices for mutton. There was also a preference — particularly in the older farmer demographic — towards less labour intensive livestock options to sheep.” The national hogget flock is up on last year. “Hogget numbers increased 2.5 per cent to 9.1 million, largely from Marlborough-Canterbury where ewe hoggets were retained to replenish

declining ewe flocks, and trade lamb purchases from Southland due to dry summer conditions. Mr Burtt says ewes were in good condition at mating and going into winter due to feed availability. “However, early pregnancy scanning of ewes fell short of farmer expectations, which was high due to pasture levels during mating.” The lamb crop is expected to be down 3.8 per cent to 22.8

Purchasing ARDG bred rams led them into the opportunity to purchase an ARDG flock many years ago — which is now producing some of the highest FE tolerant sheep in the country. Many years of scientific research with Ruakura scientists have seen ARDG become industry leaders in New Zealand for FE tolerant sheep while continuing to improve production. With breeding figures now being measured as New Zealand Maternal Worth, our sheep are at the top end of the scale. We have continued with the Worm Fec programme — which is showing great results within our flock, and have recently received our Techion BSR Worm Fec Accreditation. With the move towards DNA, we are leaders in the industry for five and 50k snip chip testing and the latest gene editing but are still manually recording to validate the data, which is becoming much more accurate as more data is collected. In recent years we have bred a small flock of terminal sire ewes to produce a top prime lamb product for both local and international markets, firstly

Spring chopping spree by Andy Bryenton
There are some things, which America does better — and big horsepower, internal combustion machines fall into that category for many of us. Classics like the Mustang, the Corvette, the Challenger — and of course, another ‘muscle’ machine from 1969 — the Grasshopper mower. The team at the Moundridge, Kansas headquarters of this global company have been working on the best designs to cover a lot of turf with smooth efficiency since the days when bell bottoms were a fashion choice. Needless to say, there’s been a lot of change over the decades, culminating in a range of lawn care machines — which are truly second to none when it comes to power and solid build quality. It matters here in New Zealand because of the hard work we expect out of a mower. It is doubly true of those of us who have a large, lifestyle block sized area to take care of. The obvious appeal of a big zero-turn machine is that it is easy to manoeuvre and that it covers a lot of ground in a single sweep. Grasshopper has added comfort to the recipe, with ergonomic seating and easy to use controls. Their mid-mount range provides an easy line of sight down to the cutting deck, so the operator knows exactly where they are going. Their even
more powerful front mount machines place the blades to the fore — ideal for sneaking in under shelterbelts, bushes and low hanging trees. The options for customising a Grasshopper to your lawn care needs don’t stop there, though. It’s possible to spec out one of these powerful mowers with a vacuum assisted catcher to tackle leaves as well as clippings. Rather than only offering petrol options, Grasshopper has stepped up to the plate with diesel models as well, especially handy for those who run a fleet of other machines (such as tractors and utes) on diesel fuel. With a recent expansion to the range available in New Zealand, the Grasshopper company are living up to their catchphrase ‘it’s so much mower’. Imported here since 1987, there’s a solid dealer network to provide ongoing service and maintenance to keep the ‘muscle car of mowers’ running sweetly for years to come.

Kiwi innovation on display Parked in front of the 12-ton HD9 bulldozer, in our Big Back Shed at the Packard museum in Whangarei and weighing only 145kg — is the funky New Zealand-designed farm vehicle, the Gnat. At first glance, visitors ask if it is a lawn mower, but we quickly explain it’s not. The Gnat was designed and built by Christchurch manufacturer, J Cameron Lewis and Company Ltd. It was produced from 1965 through to 1973 and the company built around 1,680 of these vehicles that sold for around 300 New
Zealand pounds in the currency of the day. Originally, the company imported Japanese motorcycles, including the Honda trail bike, which was set up for farm use. These bikes were

extremely popular with farmers who, unfortunately, often overloaded them. It led to many accidents, which persuaded Cameron Lewis to design something safer that would cope with the New Zealand conditions. Hence, the Gnat came about. The secret of its success was the adaptation of low-pressure mud-grip tyres, making it a light go-anywhere vehicle with good traction on the hills. The vehicle was so successful with farmers, forestry and others that NASA approached the company and ordered a similar vehicle. It was tested in the Antarctic (see a great photo at: antarctica.recollect. co.nz/nodes/view/38787) for possible use in space exploration. The mark one version of the Gnat (our one) had a two-stroke 197cc
Villiers engine, which could run both ways, giving four reverse gears. Later a mark two version was brought out, and the Villiers engine was exchanged for a Honda. However, it turned out that the Honda had lubrication problems on the hills, so later a mark three model came out using a Briggs and Stratton engine. The Gnat could carry two passengers, was fitted with optional hay racks, could tow a trailer and seat a couple of dogs on the mudguards. The vehicle was guided by tiller steering and later models incorporated independent rear wheel drive through a three-speed Albion gearbox and chains. It had a ground clearance of 28cm and a top speed of around 32 km/h. Really this was the first farm ATV until overtaken by the modern quad bike.

Not horsing around by Andy Bryenton
As has been noted before in more than one farming-focussed journal, there are plenty of side-by-side (SSV) machines out there in the world today, which were primarily bred for recreation. As any farmer can tell you, the work you have to put in on the land is hardly recreational, though it does share with some pursuits — like hunting — the early starts, long hours and bountiful mud of the outdoors life. Considering that the most long-lasting two-wheelers and quad bikes on the rural scene were made specifically for farming, what does that mean for the newer concept of the SSV? Kawasaki would opine that it means there need to be different models in clearly differentiated categories. They would know — the same company which makes the practical Stockman off-road bike also makes the maniacal KX series of motocross freestylers and the tarmaccharring Ninja road bikes. That’s why the Kawasaki Mule Pro FX EPS looks like it’s built to work. Rather than considering horsepower and top speed, Kawasaki’s brains trust were looking at load capacity and torque, leaving recreational thrills for other departments of the company. The result is a machine as practical and unfaltering as a tank, with everything you might need for rural chores and nothing you don’t. The point of difference by Andy Bryenton
The station wagon — or the estate car, if you’re to use the Euro-zone nomenclature — is officially an endangered species. The mid-sized and mini SUV has entered the market like a shoal of deadly piranhas introduced into a koi pond, and the body shape we remember from many a summer holiday may soon go the way of the traditional sedan-at-the-front, tradie-at-the-back Aussie ute. In such a market, similar shapes proliferate by a process of convergent evolution. Wind tunnels pare down drag coefficients. Interior space demands cut into the free will of exterior designers. As usual, concept cars, which roll out at the world’s auto shows with 40-inch rims and more chrome than a 1950s American diner’s cutlery drawer are toned down into the beige end of the spectrum by the accountants. Which brings us neatly to something different — the SsangYong Tivoli. A small SUV, which uses its point of difference to a huge advantage. Since it’s not made by one of the old-established names we have known since the 1980s, it dares to be different in its styling, presenting something which other road users will actually look at. Yes, it gets a frugal 6.6 litres for every 100 kilometres, and yes, it can fit a whole lot of people and gear inside with its artful layout. However, first and foremost, it’s strikingly wellsculpted. Able to be optioned with more customisation than most vehicles in its class. Fancy this pretty and practical little sports utility in white with a red

Moreover, that appeals to those who buy with their heart instead of their head. A smart move indeed for a company which plugs in the right metrics to convince cold and calculating buyers as well. Here are two — a price
under $26k and a five-year factory warranty. Combine it all, and you have an attractive package. Because while there are some who want a car as an appliance to shuttle them from A to B, most of us want something pretty and fun. A tiny new Mini or new Fiat 500 may be a touch too small. However, this — could be just the ticket.
