Fonterra’s Global Dairy Trade auction has shown new signs of expectations that the worldwide glut could be easing as dairy product prices climb. The GDT price index rose 7.7 per cent to US$2,920 (NZ$3,940), up from US$2,731 at the previous auction last month and some 36,748 tonnes of product was sold, down from 37,766 tonnes at the previous auction. “This was a smaller overall lift than we saw at the last event, but is still an excellent result,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Amy Van Ossenbruggen said in a note. “While it may still be a little early to say dairy commodity prices are recovering, fundamentals are pointing towards a continued improvement in the sector.” Recently Fonterra raised its forecast milk payout for the current season because of gains at the GDT auction on August 16. At the latest GDT auction, whole milk powder increased 3.7 per cent to US$2,793 per tonne. “WMP volume was mostly sold through the middle of the curve-shipping November through January,” according to Ms Van Ossenbruggen. “Much of the demand at this event came from China, followed by bidders from South East Asia and Oceania.”

Anhydrous milk fat rallied 15.4 per cent to US$4,769 per tonne, while butter jumped 14.9 per cent to US$3,764 per tonne. “Milk fats were the stars of this auction,” Ms Van Ossenbruggen noted. Skimmed milk powder climbed 10 per cent to US$2,224 per tonne, while Cheddar rose 9 per cent to US$3,436 per tonne. Buttermilk powder advanced 6.8 per cent to US$2,070 per tonne, while rennet casein added 6.7 per cent to US$6,720 per tonne, and lactose rose 2 per cent to US$787 per tonne. The New Zealand dollar last traded at US$0.7413 at about 1.09pm in New York, compared with US$0.7305 at 5pm in Wellington the previous day.

Opposition to council controls

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES September 2016

Federated Farmers’ president Dr William Rolleston says Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith’s voice of reason is the common sense approach New Zealand needs when it comes to genetically modified organisms. With the case of the Pexa-Vec cancer trial in Auckland and the new restrictions under the Auckland Unitary Plan, giving regional and district councils the ability to control GMO technology is not prudent. “Full control of GMOs should sit with the Environmental Protection Authority, which is part of central government,” said Dr Rolleston. “Regional authorities are not appropriately equipped to regulate this advanced technology. We will see unqualified council staff regulate technology they don’t understand and stifle new emerging sciences. “We applaud the government’s decision to look into the authority of regional authorities to manage GMOs after a High Court ruling recently. “The Royal Commission on Genetically Modified Organisms held in 2001 concluded that coexistence of GM and non-GM was possible and that New Zealand should proceed with caution on a case-by-case basis while preserving our opportunities.” Councils applying wholesale bans on the outdoor use of genetic modification

are contrary to this recommendation and limit the choices made by farmers to use technologies which have been assessed as safe by the EPA. “It also flies in the face of science which has shown the use of the technology to be safe in food production, based on two decades of use around the world,” Dr Rolleston said. While there have not been any developments in commercial use overseas which have been compelling for New Zealand farmers, there are a number of applications in the pipeline, which could be of considerable benefit, such as the high energy grass developed by AgResearch, which based on laboratory work will increase production, as well as decrease methane emissions, nitrogen leaching and water use each by between 20 and 40 per cent. Another example would be using gene drive to eliminate possums and stoats from New Zealand’s shores, giving reality to the government’s goal of a Predator Free New Zealand by 2050. Scion is also working on GM pine trees to accelerate breeding, improve wood quality and deal with the problem

of wilding pines. “We have seen that overseas 90–95 per cent of farmers have used genetically modified organisms when they have been permitted to do so. “At the end of the day, farmers in every district deserve to have choice to use technologies which have been assessed as safe by the EPA.”

September 2016 NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN Kathy Andrus grew up in Vancouver, Canada and now lives on 150 acres of rolling and flat land with 50 acres of bush in Te Arai Valley, Wellsford and her herd of more than 50 gypsy vanner horses.

“I

have always loved horses but there was no way I could have one in Vancouver as it was an hour or two travel to a place to board one,” said Kathy. “I was very passionate about sport and was involved in many sports, including whitewater kayaking and freestyle skiing.” At 28 years old Kathy came to New Zealand to participate in whitewater kayaking and stayed. She started a business called Down Under making kayaking equipment. “After 20 years it was time for a change and I wanted to have a horse, so bought a property in Nelson and purchased one for $200, but he nearly killed me because he had no brakes.” It was then that Kathy accidently discovered the gypsy vanner breed. “I had an idea in my head of the horse I

wanted but didn’t know it existed. One day I saw the horse on the internet, but I still had no idea what it was. “It took me four months to research them and track them down in England. I bought a mare in 2004 and a stallion in 2005 as there were none in New Zealand nor Australia at the time. Both flew over from the UK in mid-2005. “It wasn’t cheap, quality costs a lot of money. It has been a huge journey for me, but I love the horses. They are amazingly quiet and peaceful and are referred to as the golden retriever with hooves.” Kathy says they are like a pet dog, but she believes that is due to the way she raises them in herds like the Gypsies have done for decades. “We have a lot of visitors on our farm and they can walk in amongst them and not be scared. Even the stallion will let

kiddies and adults ride on him. “The horses are in their own herds with their own stallion. They don’t have problems foaling and we don’t handle the foals at all. Most people wean them early but we let them self wean.” With self weaning, the stallion pushes them out at one year old because if it is a colt, the stallion doesn’t want competition and if it is a filly, they have to find their own herd. This is the horse’s way to ensure that inbreeding does not occur. If Kathy sells any of her horses she can spend up to two months working in the round ring training them. “When they leave here they will do anything for you. Clients constantly say they are the best horse they have ever had. Most people grab horses young and slap a halter on, that’s not training,” said Kathy. “You have to work with the horse, you have to understand their language. If you don’t know their language, then 300–400 kilos could bowl you over. “A few years back a lady called about an older foal and asked if the horse had been handled much. I said no, but if I try hard enough I could probably put a halter on him. “It was Jools Topp of the Topp Twins and she came straight over and went

out into the herd with the colt. “Her eyes popped out when she saw he was still with his dam. Jools obviously knows her stuff and wanted him because he hadn’t been handled, so they don’t have bad habits from humans. “She is a brilliant horse women. He is now a four-year-old and is doing just fine with her even doing TV appearances for her show at times.” Kathy lets her horses be horses and at the end of the day says their general well-being is extremely important and if raised properly their personalities are even better. There is no such thing as a bad horse, just inexperienced owners. “I have two dogs and my beautiful horses, they are amazing, they have changed me in many ways. A dog will give to you no matter what, they will always try to please you. “A horse isn’t quite the same, unless you become its leader. Then they will want to be with you and do things with you. It is a connection, when you get a horse to that point it is pretty amazing, you are communicating in a language they understand. “They are very giving and forgiving. I have never been kicked or bitten. I feel absolutely safe with them. They have a very complex social structure and like us, they want to live as well.”

INCREASE THROUGH PARTNERSHIP by Rose Stirling Thanks to a partner farm scheme, dairy farming couple Tony and Briar Lunjevich have against all odds managed to increase their stock of dairy cattle despite being in the midst of a dairy recession.

T

he couple 50/50 share milk with Tony’s parents Don and Linda, and describe the land in Takahue, south of Kaitaia as challenging terrain. “Our land is about a third each of steep hills, rolling and flat — a mixed contour really. When we started dairy farming in 2011, we were milking around 200 cows — this year we will be milking 340. We are relative newcomers, so we have been fortunate to get this expert advice,” said Briar. “The main challenge we have had is poor pasture quality. It didn’t help that the farm is shaped like a big triangle with the cowshed at one corner. There is also a big hill dividing most of the farm from the cowshed which has been a challenge, especially in terms of the time bringing the cows in and the energy loss of walking over. We have also

struggled with our in-calf rate.” It was these challenges of being new to dairy farming and working on difficult terrain that lead the couple to seek the help of the farm partnership which is fully funded by DairyNZ and the Northland Dairy Development Trust. “We felt like there was a lot of room for improvement and we are keen and like to learn and do the best we can.” According to DairyNZ the Lunjevich’s were the first to take up the partnership and are now in their third and final year. “We get eight successful experienced farmers, a couple of DairyNZ staff and a facilitator visit us every two or three months. We meet on the farm and they help us to improve our performance. “The focus isn’t just on production but profit from pasture as well. Our production may not be that great but BRED BY SEED GENETICS AUSTRALIA

the aim is to keep the profit margin high and use the pasture as best we can.” Prior to dairy farming Briar was a fulltime primary school teacher and Tony

was mustering in Pilbara, Australia. They are the proud parents of a 12-month-old son named Abel. “To have this kind of support has been wonderful,” says Briar.

The Lunjevich’s farm is mixed contour, providing for a range of challenges when shifting cattle

“We have been very fortunate to be selected and I would definitely recommend it to other farmers needing help. You do open up your farm and your books to scrutiny, not just to the farm partners but the public as well because you have annual on-farm field days. “We do a farm report every 10 days so there is a bit more paperwork than normal and we have set goals as well. There are definitely no regrets. It has been life changing. We don’t think we could have survived continuing the way we were in the current climate.” Briar says the support has been

invaluable and it is knowledge that they draw on. “Sometimes we would get into heated discussions because there have been different viewpoints. That has been really interesting and meant we have had to sift through the views to find out what will work best for us. “We listen to the team but we have learnt we have to be responsive to what is happening here. Things can change so fast. It is a balance between listening to your gut feeling and the experts.” As a result of the on-farm partnership, Tony and Briar have made a number of changes which

Pouto Horse Sports What: Horse Sports | Where: Pouto Pt When: 22nd October 2016 Who: Steve & Kath Nathan

have resulted in positive outcomes. “We allocate our pasture based on how much the cows need and what is actually there, rather than putting them into the longest paddock for a day. Now we know how much they are getting because we measure it. “We have lifted our stocking rate and that has improved the quality of our grass as well. It’s easier to get the residuals you need.” She says the cows eat down to the right level on the grass and when they go back to graze that paddock the grass will snap off at the lower level rather than leaving lots of stalky grass behind, making the grass higher quality. “Another major change we have made is reducing our cost of production, which in turn has helped to improve the profit margins. “We have a cost of production under $3.00/kgMS. This has been achieved in a number of ways including strict budgeting, an increase in production and better utilisation of our pasture.” A duty that is part of the partnership

scheme is for the couple to hold annual on-farm field days, inviting other farmers to see and hear about the changes they have made. “It has been a good experience. The feedback we have had is that farmers like seeing a challenging farm being used as a partner farm,” says Briar.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

The Kauri Museum at Matakohe has opened an exhibition which has both an onsite and online presence displaying the history of the axemen of Northland.

T

he region’s competitive wood chopping and its connection with the kauri bushmen was a passion of former Kauri Museum CEO, Bet Nelley. “Over the past century, Northland has produced many axemen and sawyers of stature. This exhibition owes much to the relationships Bet nurtured within the wood chopping world,” said exhibition developer Sheri O’Neill. “Names such as Mick Griffen, Joe Julian, Dinny Hoey, Pero Smith, Bill Shelford and Innes Davidson have joined the ranks of New Zealand’s legendary sporting greats, and Northland’s competitive axemen continue to excel. “This heritage sport can track its pedigree back to the kauri bushmen and is portrayed as never before, through the eyes of our contemporary sportsmen.”

Woodchopping events were not recorded for Northland before 1906, when the Kamo and Northern Wairoa Axemen’s clubs affiliated with the NZ Association. Competition was undoubtedly commonplace long before this date, due to the amount of axemen and sawyers working in the Northland bush. Veteran axeman Bruce Alexander said: “One of the legends to come out of the Puhipuhi bush was that Tom West had run out of tobacco and challenged another bushman for a chop off, for his supply. The contestants set to work on two standing kahikatea, with Tom felling his tree an hour or so before the second place getter finished his.” The exhibition is groundbreaking and sets new benchmarks for how

Over the last nine years Inversion NZ have been attending trade shows throughout the country, reaching people with long-term back and neck problems and letting them feel for themselves the amazing benefits that inversion gives. Two years ago at one of these large shows a disgruntled person told them how hard it was to find parking and how difficult it was to walk through the crowds to find their stand, then have to stand around and wait for a treatment. Two months later Dave experimented with a private show in Greymouth and was encouraged by how relaxed and successful the show was, so their own private expos began. At these events there is easy parking, free entry, comfortable seating and most importantly there are no crowds of people to walk through.

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain. He has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and he has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the world on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, ‘these things are gold’ and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain. Come along to any one of our shows near you. People can sit and watch and see how other people are treated and their reactions as they get off the table pain free for the first time in years, and most importantly see how they feel themselves after a treatment. Because of Inversion NZ’s nine years of travelling the country, Inversion Therapy has gained a reputation as a simple but effective way to treat back or neck pain. This recently gained a reputation boost by one of New Zealand’s most wellknown pain specialists, Dr Giresh Kanji. He completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched low back pain, writing Fix Your Back and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache and Migraine, both books are available in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in his research on low back pain that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and inversion showed the best results of all the trials ever written on low back pain. Three studies showed a 60 per cent reduction in pain and one showed a 75 per cent reduction in operations for people with disc prolapse.

New hope for long-term back pain sufferers

After over eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. After over eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. "To me surgery was never an option" he said" as long as I still could walk, there was hope" Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. "The first time I tried it the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that" he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, "as specialists had told me it was irreversible", "I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief". To Dave's surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, "I couldn't believe it" he told me "I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time" It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand

and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to the Northland Home Show, or come to one of our other shows near you, for a treatment. (See below for details) If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. "We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children" he told me, "the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent". What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the heath of the brain as we all get older.

TESTIMONIAL DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back.

Dave and his son Tyler will be attending the show; Tyler (17) had been around the shows since he was 8 and has seen for himself the amazing transformations the table has given people. " Tyler loves doing the shows and has picked up a great understanding of how the Teeter works, it's a pleasure working with him". Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, "I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain" that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves" he told me "most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less" he said "we let the tables do the talking".

Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been inverting for seven years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS. The Teeter Inversion Table works on three levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture. Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate. Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life. Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

NORTHLAND HOMESHOW

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life.

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings.

Test can be a lifesaver Mark Hadlow is a Blue September ambassador and has a special message for our rural men. “I’m a firm believer that prevention is better than cure and I am amazed at the number of men who seem to think you don’t need the ‘blue glove check’ post 50 or even younger,” said Mark. “Yes sure the PSA blood test is a good start but why not go the whole hog and face your fear and get a check.” Mark says this is not scaremongering. “Too many rural men are diagnosed too late and when that happens, the outcomes are not good. Ask your doctor to do the check — it’s no big deal and can be a lifesaver. The relief and the joy of the knowledge of a normal prostate is outstanding and such a great feeling.” Mark says you owe it to

yourself, your family and your stress levels. “My doctor and I joke about it — how to start your day with a surprise, a blue glove surprise. It’s not a laughing matter at all, however some men are too scared or anxious to do it and we need to help them. So really it’s up to the ‘blue glovers’ of Blue September to challenge a mate and say ‘face your fear’ and get relief. “There’s nothing brave in pretending that prostate cancer can’t happen to you. Over 3,000 men are diagnosed and 600 die each year from prostate cancer. Many of them could have been diagnosed earlier by getting gloved and had a much better outcome. So go on, get it done and smack fear outa the park.” The prostate is a small gland, normally about the size of a walnut. It sits just below the bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the testicles to the outside of the body through the penis. Prostate cancer is the presence

Mark Hadlow of cancer cells or a cancerous growth in or on the gland. In many cases, prostate cancer is slow growing and having it won’t affect you, but in some cases, the cancer is more aggressive and can spread to your bones, liver and lungs.

See the Stripper that gets it off, everytime! current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says. “Why sand when the person who made the item, sanded it in the first place? I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.” Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are. At high school he developed a passion for working with wood and his love of fine furniture began. Once Simon developed his own stripper, the word got out and today, Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s strip club over 30 years later, Simon’s products and methods are now known By Dave Hare, as Cooper’s Strip Club; a complete DIY Coopers was started by Simon Cooper in the restoration system, family owned and operated, early 80’s. available throughout New Zealand and At that time, Simon was a cabinet maker with a Australia. boutique shop in Wellington making and Simon says Cooper’s is different to conventional restoring fine furniture. Disillusioned with the standard of current paint strippers in so many ways. The main ones being that it will strip any finish from any surface, strippers and with a flair for chemistry, Simon set about making a stripper that was easy to use without the need for sanding, whether the finish is on the inside or outside of your home. and actually worked. “I am very proud of it and the results it has I asked him what on earth possessed him to try achieved,” he says. and change the norm. “Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern” I asked Simon what the Stripping Expo is all about and he said, “The Stripping Expo is a DIY paint and varnish stripping exhibition travelling regionally throughout New Zealand.” “The purpose of the Stripping Expo is to show Cooper’s stripping any paint or varnish from any surface.” Simon says this months Stripping Expos are in Auckland and Whangarei, “We have on exhibition some impressive before and after displays, as well as practical one on one demonstrations.” Come and meet the family, chat to us about your project, bring along some photos of what you want to strip and we’ll select a similar old piece of paint or varnish to strip with you.” But what Simon really wants you to do is actually bring along your project, no matter how big or small. Bring a chair, a drawer, unscrew a window sash, a door, a piece of Archtrave or skirting board, and the Cooper’s will really show you what Cooper’s is capable of doing.

Joint damage and furry grain that needs a lot of sanding is more often the norm than the exception and I know what I’m talking about, I ran a dip stripping bath… not a good experience. By this point we might just think it would be easier to send that chair to a ‘Professional’, well the good news is, that isn’t needed, stripping is easy and you can do it yourself. Stripping your windows has never been so easy By Darryl Clarke When it comes to stripping your windows, it’s normal to be confronted by the scope of the project, and the windows that won’t open or close properly because of the many coats of paint that have glued them shut. The tricky corners with all that built-up paint that seems impossible to strip and of course the lead paint that we grind into dust with sandpaper to spread around for everyone to breathe; it’s all very daunting. Well not anymore, Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s Strip Club, says. Simon says their stripping system makes stripping your windows the perfect DIY project. Simon confidently claims their easy-to-use products and methods will remove any paint or varnish from the inside or outside of your windows without the need to use sandpaper. Simon says their stripper will dissolve any finish and their flusher will rinse the surface clean and because the process is wet, there is no harmful lead dust to worry about. During September the Cooper’s Strip Club will be demonstrating at the Auckland and Whangarei Stripping Expos. Simon says “If you are interested in seeing how to get those windows dealt to once and for all, pop on down and see the perfect way to strip your windows. Even better, unscrew a window sash and bring it with you to see what Cooper’s can really do!”.

The biological experience

SPRAYING

Many farmers throughout Northland may not realise that they have their very own, and very active, biological farming group in the region. The Northland Biological Farming Group was originally called the Kaipara Biological Farming Group, but to save confusion with district boundaries it was renamed this year. The group has been actively helping farmers, landowners and orchardists to get more acquainted with their ‘underground workforce’ for the past two to three years, and has a strong ‘growing’ following. It is farmer-led and farmer focussed, with the message that taking care of your underground livestock pays huge dividends in every aspect of farming and growing, most fundamentally in overall profitability and therefore sustainability. The strong support peer group enables ideas to be discussed and trialled on farm, as well as experiences seen and shared. With local knowledge and support, the group has welcomed many well-known national and international names in biological farming circles to share their knowledge and experience with the group. Most recently we co-hosted two field days at Maungatapere in conjunction with Avoca Lime, with Cherryle Prew, New Zealand’s very own resident ‘soil bug lady’. Cherryle runs a lab called the Soil Food Web which diagnoses deficits

Optimise pasture management Pasture first is a DairyNZ initiative geared at encouraging farmers to use their pasture first — an increasingly important factor in farming through the current reduced milk price. Past and current grazing experiments inform how best to manage pasture — and shows in a high milk price year that the first 85 percent of the operating profit comes from the base pasture, 10 percent from nitrogen fertiliser use, and the last five percent from supplements. Past grazing experiments by Dr Arnold Bryant and the Ruakura team revolutionised the way pasture was managed through winter and spring. Following a series of ground-breaking trials in 1999, Mr Bryant and his colleague John Penno set up the 1.75t MS/ha trial, aimed at achieving 1750 kilograms MS/ha and investigating the costs. It measured the increase in per-cow and per-hectare milk solids production when total feed supply is increased by bought-in supplements and/or nitrogen fertiliser. A range of combinations were used to increase pasture growth with N supplements bought in and an increased stocking rate to use the extra feed. The results indicated it was uneconomic

to add extra feed to a system with good pasture utilisation, unless the stocking rate was increased and cheap feed available. DairyNZ research and development general manager Dr David McCall says the pasture/supplementary debate has been polarising and confusing for some farmers. “The pasture first concept is about managing pastures regardless of farming system. Modelling has shown that getting pasture management right is worth over $300/ha, even at today’s milk prices.” In the 1.75t MS/ha trial, the control farmlet (no N applied) was producing 1000kg MS/ha. Using N fertiliser allowed an additional 200kg MS/ha to be produced and supplement use (maize silage) with increased stocking rate added another 400kg MS/ha. Dr McCall has re-analysed the trial results with today’s costs and milk prices. When comparing these differing farm systems at $7.00/kg MS, 85 percent of the operating profit came from pasture, 10 percent from N fertiliser use and five percent from supplements. “Clearly it’s more important to get things right in something that contributes 85 percent of the profit, before something that contributes

the last five percent,” says Dr McCall. “When calculating at $4.00/kg MS, N use only increased the operating profit by two percent and the supplement groups made a loss. “This suggests farmers need to focus on optimising pasture management and be very careful about adding costs that may not give economic returns. It makes sense to have a supplementary feed source as insurance feed for dry cows in autumn but not to push production at a $4 milk price.”

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid-

80s who had arthritis in her shoulder and hands. She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-year-old whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. Creating your wedding by Ann Morgan

Getting married is one of the biggest, most exciting days of your life. The preparations, depending on the style of wedding you choose, can be extremely easy and relaxed or more detailed and structured. Once you announce your engagement, friends and family start asking when the big day will be. Well-meaning people will offer a lot of advice, some of which is helpful and some which can be overwhelming, it is up to you which advice you use. It is your big day, your one chance to ensure you have the wedding you want, this day is all about you and your loved one. Book the church or wedding location, celebrant and reception venue early so that you won’t be disappointed closer to the time if your choice gets booked up. Ensure you find a good photographer as you only have one shot at getting good photographs. Maybe there is

someone that others you know have used. Always view their work and have a practice session with them and discuss poses and ideas of photographs you would like. Even if what you want is different, a good photographer should be able to accommodate your wishes. Whether plain or more elaborate, choose the style rings you want. Maybe consider designing your own and getting them custom-made by a reputable jeweller. The wedding party is a big decision. Maybe you only want one person or six. It can be difficult for some to choose but remember, it is your day so make sure you have those people you want to be standing beside you as you say your wedding vows. It is important to have a test run with

TYING THE KNOT ADVERTORIAL

Being a marriage celebrant How do we choose a celebrant that will help our day reflect who we are? Making sure the ceremony is all about the couple, their hopes and dreams is important and makes it a very special event to be part of. I personally write all ceremonies from scratch and believe there can never be too many draft copies. Including family and friends in your ceremony can also help add that personal touch. Making sure everyone can hear clearly during the ceremony is vital, so check your celebrant has a good sound system that works well at any venue. Holding a rehearsal will also help to make the day run smoothly and assist with those pre-wedding nerves. Having a professional who works closely with you ensures you will look back on your day with the happiest of memories. Celebrants who are members of the Celebrants Association of New Zealand work to a code of ethics. They have training opportunities and access to a wide range of resources. To be closely involved with a couple on their wedding day is a role I take very seriously which is why I undertook training at the Celebrant School in Auckland from 2009–2010. I encourage all couples to find a celebrant they trust and can have fun with and know that their ceremony will

Clean, Green and Sustainable When it comes down to rugby, Ireland have always been a strong competitor, however their wins against the All Blacks, although memorable, are minimal. But don’t worry about that. Over the past ten years, Bora Bia, the Irish food board have introduced a new marketing brand, “Origin Green”. This brand is described as a verifiable commitment to sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, involving farmers, processes and suppliers, aimed at reducing the environmental footprint. So it looks like Ireland, have not only stolen a march on New Zealand, but also the rest of the world. New Zealand has always put forward our Clean, Green image brand, but that has been heavily tarnished over the years by overuse of chemicals, such as antibiotics, herbicides, insecticides, drenches and synthetic fertilisers etc which continues to keep us locked into commodity markets and low returns.

There is something critically wrong with New Zealand’s obsession with chemical production, especially in a time when consumers are calling out for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco friendly and sustainable manner. Ireland has stolen the march, but we can tackle them!! It is awesome to hear that you, the CEO — Landcorp, are looking at moving towards certified organic production. I enjoyed your comments, ”That there are people sceptical about organics in terms of science, but you cannot dispute the substantial premium, especially with dairy”. Having been on the organic track for the past 30 years, there is a myriad of books and journals, written by PHD’s and Professors expounding the science of the natural system.

Roksolid Full Spectrum Fertiliser

The chemical fertiliser science is based on a “NPK theory” put forward by Justus Von Liebig in 1840. It is not science it is just a theory! Von Liebig declared his theory to be false and in the United States Department of Agriculture, year book, 1957, it states clearly that the NPK Balance sheet theory is false, so where is the science ? Farming is a natural system, not a chemical system. The natural system works together with mother nature, who provides all the free natural capital needed for farming, such as topsoil, micro organisms, sunlight, rain, atmospheric minerals, carbon as carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, making up 97.5 % of the plants mineral uptake, all for free ! Plus bees and other pollinators, worms and manure recycled by animals, the list goes on. Current Agro chemical production is eroding this natural capital. We need to work with Mother Nature to restore this natural capital. Here at Agrissentials we are re-mineralising the topsoil and regenerating new topsoil through our fertilising programs. Our multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, not only do this, but bring health and vitality back to the soil, which transfers onto plants, animals and humans, dramatically reducing

sickness and health problems. The United Nations, F.A.O. (Food and Agriculture Organisation), declared 2015 as the “International year of soils”, they stated that, ”Soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human life spam!” Agrissentials dispute this and have recorded anecdotal evidence, using our own fertilisers on a Bio Gro certified farm, with 50mm topsoil on a clay base, we witnessed over an eight year period an increase in the topsoil of 250mm, ( Ralph Littles dairy farm, Ruawai, NI ). So bring it on! Organic farming is not only the future, but it is also the security and sustainability we need to continue enjoying our lives and our farming. The change from chemical production to natural certified production is very simple. All it entails is a change from synthetic, soluble fertilisers that are impacting on our environment, — to Agrissentials multimineral, microbial rich fertilisers which enhance the environment. A solution for pitted concrete

Dairy product up to speed by Paul Campbell

While there’s new enthusiasm in the dairy industry on the price front, there has been plenty of comment in the media about the perceived lack of innovation on the part of Fonterra where added value is concerned.

Are pitted concrete floors an issue? Dene Richardson from AllFloor Prep Ltd recognises the problems that the agricultural sectors are up against. “Ten years ago my cousin, a dairy farmer in Whangarei, approached me about a severe pitting problem in his dairy area and around his vat,” said Dene. “He had tried cement based products which had failed in only a few months after application which he knew was only a temporary fix but had no other solutions. To top it off the inspectors had given him a deadline to rectify the problem.” Dene had been trialling an epoxy resin product called the Lactoguard System in other areas of the flooring industry and felt confident that it would solve his cousin’s problem. “Ten years on and the system is still as good as the day it went down.” Over the past ten years Dene and his team have been working with farmers from South Waikato to the Northern districts perfecting the Lactoguard System so it has minimal disruption to the operations of the farm. “We realise that time is a huge factor on a busy farm. Initially we were doing dairy areas when the cows were dry so there were no disruptions to

milking. We found that the late spring and summer months also work well because the Lactoguard System cures fast in warm weather. We work in together with farmers to complete our job between milkings.” Dene is confident that the system is a long-term solution to your pitted concrete problems on floors or walls and cracks in yards. The Lactoguard slip resistant finish is also beneficial for stock outside the bails. For more information visit allfloorprep. co.nz or have a chat with Dene about any pitting issues you may have.

But a recent company announcement seemed to slip under the radar, with news that Chinese consumers are getting fresher UHT milk because of a Fonterra process to ship UHT to them ‘at worldleading speed’. This involves enhancing the supply chain from New Zealand to mainland China to achieve a huge reduction in the time it takes to get product to market from more than 100 days to just 34. Fonterra’s global operations head, Robert Spurway, says time spent shipping and transporting products can be the difference between good and great tasting dairy nutrition. “When it comes to dairy, there is no substitute for freshness and this is something Fonterra takes great pride in. We produce some of the purest dairy in the world, from grass-fed cows living on quality pasture and you can taste that quality in our milk. “From a supply chain perspective, reducing

GRASS ISSUE #2: When plants can’t access the food

Sorry. The food wasn’t transported this week. Imagine that. Healthy, nutritious food has been produced. It’s packaged up and ready to eat. It’s even close by. But what good is that if you can’t get your hands on it? Something like this happens every day on farms throughout New Zealand. Farmers spend hard-earned money on fertiliser that’s meant to feed and grow their grass. But a lot of the minerals within the fertiliser isn’t making it to the plants – they’re close by but not within reach. The problem is transportation. Before we explore the issue of nutrient transportation, we need to talk about the range of foods that plants need in order to thrive. It’s more than you think.

Grass needs 16 nutrients In spite of the fixation with NPK, grass actually needs a combination of 12-16 nutrients if it’s going to add healthy weight to your animals. Among them are Calcium, Magnesium, Nitrogen, Potassium, Sodium, Phosphate, Sulphur, Zinc, Boron, Copper, Manganese, Iron, and Selenium. Some of these minerals directly impact plant growth. Others help plants by feeding the soil microbes that convert nutrients into forms that plants can uptake. Some minerals condition the soil and suppress plant diseases while others promote root development. It is the combination of these minerals, working together, that causes grass to grow in a nutrient-rich fashion. But it’s not enough for these nutrients to be in the soil, or even around the roots (micro-organisms bring the minerals there). Something has to transport the food up into the plant.

Calcium is the Transport Truck Calcium is known as the King of Minerals. That’s because it is the nutrient that transports all the other minerals up the roots and into the engine room of a plant. Calcium is the mineral truck which is why plants and animals use it more than any other nutrient (by weight/ volume).

What else does Calcium do? Apart from transporting nutrient food up into your grass, Calcium performs these other crucial functions: • Calcium enhances the uptake of many other nutrients, making them available to plants • Calcium promotes healthy root, stem and leaf growth. • Calcium improves the soil environment for microorganisms • Calcium flocculates the soil • Calcium allows Nitrogen fixation to occur on the root nodules of legumes • Calcium is important for microbes – fungi and bacteria rely on calcium for their reproduction.

Can you have too much Calcium? Applying too much Calcium can create as many problems as not having enough. Calcium works in partnership with Magnesium to determine soil structure. Calcium loosens soil by flocculating soil particles together and increasing air space, while Magnesium decreases particle size causing less air space and tighter soils. You need a degree of space to allow for water, air, and nutrient movement and enough compactness to enable these crucial elements to be retained in the soil. What happens if too much Calcium is applied? The soil structure becomes too loose allowing water to flow through unimpeded which washes vital elements away from plant root systems. It also causes soils to dry out more readily. That’s why it’s important to have between 60-70% Calcium and 10-20% Magnesium base saturation to achieve the desired structure, depending on your soil type. When these levels have been reached, you will have provided the ideal environment for the soil biology to thrive.

The Calcium - pH Mistake Many farmers are familiar with Calcium and use it primarily to shift the pH levels of the soil. There are a couple of misunderstandings behind this practice. The first mistake is thinking that pH alone is a good indicator of soil health. When you read the list of 16 key minerals that grass requires, you can see that soil health is more complex than pH. Soil and plant

(and animal) health is a complex, interconnected system that includes micro-organisms, organic matter, water and air flow, and the right balance of minerals to feed the whole soil food web. The second mistake is thinking Calcium is the only mineral that lifts pH. In fact, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium all lift pH more than Calcium, 1.6x, 2x and 4x respectively. It is therefore important to have these minerals in the correct base saturation percentages to achieve the optimum 6.3 pH.

Golden Bay Dolomite has Organic Ca Dolomite is a 59% calcium 39% magnesium carbonate occurring as a completely natural rock deposit found only at Mount Burnett, Golden Bay, New Zealand. Dolomite’s slow magnesium release makes it the perfect fertiliser. As plant root acid secretions in the soil work on dolomite, its rate of breakdown accelerates in demand to plant requirements, releasing both magnesium and calcium in quantities sufficient to meet those requirements. Uncommon sense Surviving spring Although I reside in Hamilton city where my total effective grazeable area is controlled by a push mower, my mind is never far from the memories of gumboots, raincoats and mud. I remember spring. When the alarm goes off, it’s like the starter’s gun for a day-long sprint. There are cows in the calving mob to check, newly born to match with mothers (then tag and record), milking, feeding calves, feeding cows, getting in newly calved cows, checking and treating sick animals, teaching new calves to feed, drafting cows into new mobs and maybe, if there’s time, trying to lift the old girl that went down (she may have to wait). Spring is when the sleep account of every staff member is in overdraft and stress is at its highest. The one saving grace is that this period is relatively short. When you think you’ve had an absolute guts full and can take no more, it’s over. Here are some ideas that may help. When the dust settles, it’s good to have discussions with staff and analyse what your practices have been, both good and bad. While everything is fresh in their minds,

get their suggestions on ways to improve for next year. And while you’re at it, look ahead three months and together do a checklist of the tasks you’ll need to get through. Discussions like this turn mere employees into a committed team. On my recent rounds with clients, I came across a number of issues you might include in your staff talks. Farmers are turning to home-grown supplements in the way of maize or grass silage. Although these can reduce costs, watch out for nasty surprises; there is nothing worse than finding that a large percentage of the bales you stacked last year are spoiled due to holes from rough handling. If it’s really wet and you have a grass shortage, utilise supplements for the short term to protect your grass and avoid pugging. Be aware of dry matter: in particular, metabolisable energy and protein for your cows to get balance. If you are feeding high amounts of maize at 8%

23

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

protein, then a high protein to counteract this may be needed (such as soya meal @ 48% protein or DDG @ 28%). Search for a blend and get advice while you have your own feed to mix it with. During a wet spring, a lot of sulphur will have leached out of the soil, so consider applying nitrogen to get your feed growing. Ammonium sulphate is a good option since it will deliver sulphur and nitrogen that will hang around and be fully utilised. There are publications showing it will grow grass at 6 degrees soil temp. But don’t use urea. Urea needs at least 10 degrees to be effective and won’t grow grass in wet and cold conditions. Here’s one thing I’m concerned about: the increasing numbers of farmers putting on lime in large amounts without first knowing where their soil’s calcium levels are at. One farmer wasted money putting on three tonnes of lime per hectare when he only needed one. The real expense is not the lime, which is relatively cheap. The cost is animal health. Excess calcium puts downward pressure on magnesium, which will have a negative effect on animal health. Although the daily grind of spring may

“What do I need to run my shed on solar?” Question is, “what do you want to run off your battery?” Before contacting your solar professional a little preparation goes a long way.

Masport R1500 $1999 *Fire, Flue & Shield Package

While many farm houses might be already connected to the grid, the cost of running cables out to the fence, shed, pump station or project cave can be prohibitive. Solar can run just about anything if you plan ahead. Ask yourself “could I add extra appliances later?” and “do I really need to run anything off a 240V AC 3-pin plug outlet?” Inverters can be convenient, but they come with overheads and tend to upscale your required system requiring larger batteries than a low voltage alternative or generator. Next note the ratings of all appliances. Items running off a 240V AC inverter will need their peak power rating and average power draw considered. Motors and pumps have a high surge to start them but run at a lower rate once up and running. Fridges and freezers come in a wide variety of types and efficiencies. Check the kWh per year rating. It may make more sense to start with a new fridge more suitable to offgrid use. Electric fence units usually have information online, but do work out the length of your own fence. Finally, think about how long appliances will run per day and per week. Your solar panel needs to replace

Leon by Wagener Meet Leon the new freestanding multi-fuel fire from Wagener. The Wagener Leon is Sparky’s big brother and has evolved because you asked us for a larger version of this extremely popular wee fire. He has all the features of Sparky but with an increased heat output of 16– 18kW, an optional wetback delivering 3kW hot water and a fixed log box base for storage. The name Leon is in recognition of Leon Kernot who started the family business and designed the first ever original Wagener stove some 35 years ago. Leon, the man, was hardworking, entrepreneurial and very popular, and that is our expectation for this new stove which has been designed by his son Barry and partner Ngaire, who currently own the business. The stove is handcrafted and despatched by Leon’s grandsons Troy and Kyle along with the rest of the Wagener Stoves team. Leon has been built to work hard and stand the test of time, just like his forebear — the original Wagener stove. He will keep you warm and cosy on the outside and will boil the kettle or

cook a pot of soup or stew to warm your insides too. For more information contact Wagener Stoves on 09 408 2469 or visit www.wagenerstoves.co.nz and see what our customers have to say.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Posture of the hind legs There is a connection between the posture of the hind legs in rear view and the condition of the claws. Normally the hind legs are more or less parallel. It is hardly surprising that in the course of a few years the difficult task of the outer hind claws may affect the posture of the hind legs. When a cow

stands and walks properly, there is less chance of the hooves being overloaded. The ideal cow makes optimum use of her legs and hooves; her body weight is distributed evenly over her legs and hooves. This does not happen in reality, as dairy cows tend to put most of the load on their outside hind claws, so that is where most of the problems occur. Heavy loading and contusion of the quick in the outer hind claw will in the end cause sensitivity or pain. The cow will try to compensate for this by walking on her heels and by placing or turning the foot more outwards by adopting a base-wide or a cow-hocked posture, thus making the inner claw bear more weight and the outer less. This decreases the height of the heel, makes the angle of the front wall more shallow and causes the cow to walk with her hocks closer together. Such an adjustment of posture is frequently observed. Thus the posture of the hind legs of our dairy cattle is

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

only partly inborn and to a great extent adopted. The latter is due partly to the unfavourable loading on the outer hind claw and to domestication, but probably for the greater part to the claw diseases that can afflict the claws. As a matter of fact, the effect of this adjustment of posture is relative: measuring shows that in adopting a cow-hocked or basewide posture, the cow relieves her sensitive outer claw of its overload, only to a certain extent. Mostly this claw remains more heavily loaded than the inner claw, albeit less than before. This must be ascribed to the difference in height. The longerterm effects of laminitis may eventually be seen as an upward rotation of the toe and a convex shape of the anterior hoof wall. Improving the weight distribution, together with restoring the foot to its correct shape and weight-bearing surfaces is the main aim of preventative hoof trimming. Due to preventative hoof trimming being very time consuming we have found that many farmers are recognising the benefits of contracting their trimming out to professional hoof trimmers, resulting in a reduction of

Good posture

severe lameness incidences in the herd and reduced lame cow numbers; thereby increasing productivity and bottomline profits.

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

Bobby calf changes ‘still needed’ New regulations aimed at improving the standard of care for bobby calves have now been in effect since last month, with the Ministry of Primary Industry recording that during the peak of the calving season for dairy farmers, improvements in calf welfare have been noted across the supply chain. The regulations which took effect on August 1 were part of an accelerated programme focussed on further improving the standard of care for bobby calves, a programme which was highlighted by media exposure earlier this year, which showed abuses in the industry both at a farm pickup point and in a slaughter yard. “Everyone across the supply chain has a role to play when it comes to the welfare of bobby calves. What we have seen and heard so far is promising and a majority of people are following the rules, but we have also noticed some people still need to change their practices to ensure all regulations are met,” said MPI’s director of Verification

Services, Chris Kebbell. “We’d like to acknowledge the majority of farmers, transporters and processors who have always cared for young calves and are meeting the regulations with ease, but we remind the minority that they have an obligation to care for calves and they face infringement fines or prosecutions if they don’t.” The four regulations introduced this season include fitness for transport requirements, a maximum transport duration of 12 hours, the prohibition on killing calves by blunt force to the head and the prohibition of transporting calves by sea across the Cook Strait. These regulations provide MPI with additional tools to respond to those who

are not meeting their obligations for the welfare of calves. “The key area we have noted that could be improved by the minority is ensuring calves are fit for transport. Farmers should not rely on transporters to make the decision on fitness for transport, as farmers are in the best position to know the animals.”

Showing them how it’s done You know how it is. You hear what sounds like the familiar refrain of a favourite old rock song blasting from the tinny speakers of a young person’s iPhone. For a moment, you think that all is right with the world and that someone of the schlock-pop generation has gained an appreciation for the classics. Then you realise, with dawning horror, that this is the dubstep remix of that treasured ‘classic’. You wish that the guitar-wielding gods of ‘proper music’ could descend from on high to set matters right. So it is with many concepts, which touch off a craze the second time around, only to leave old hands shaking their heads with disbelief. One such is the resurgence of the compact SUV — a hot ticket right now in motoring, but a design which has definitely been seen before. Turn back the clock far enough and one iconic brand has seen it come past twice, for very different reasons. So when they step in and show the upstarts how it’s done, the result is like Led Zep crashing a Miley Cyrus show. Right? Jeep invented the small SUV. Well — to be more accurate, the Willys Jeep was the first ever compact, light, goanywhere four wheel drive and though it may have been spawned from the need

to transport a generation of young men into the fight against Hitler, lessons were learned there which informed the entire 4x4 genome. Fast forward to the 1980s and TV icon Angus MacGuyver was to be found driving a copper-coloured Jeep Wrangler — a compact, go-anywhere off-roader which fit his character like the ubiquitous Swiss army knife and pocketful of string and paperclips. Now, with small, compact SUVs coming in every flavour from serious and German to pop-retro Japanese, Jeep have taken to the drawing board to lay down the law. Their new Renegade Trailhawk channels a bit of the war-winning Willys — check that iconic grille — and a bit of the 80s Wrangler with its shape and footprint. Underneath, however, it’s all new technology, including a powerful new 2.4-litre engine with a nine-speed auto box. In typical Jeep fashion, even the name of the engine is raw and macho — they’ve called it the Tigershark. Underneath the modern satnav, touch screen, nine-speaker audio and leather trim confection, this is a true Jeep. High ride height, tough skid plates, real off-

Renegade Trailhawk channels a bit of the war-winning Willys

road capabilities and plenty of torque make this far more than an urban ‘faux wheel drive’. Sure, it knows when you’re on city tarmac and adjusts its drivetrain specs accordingly, saving fuel by kicking into two wheel mode. But it’s fully trail rated, meaning that serious men in Swanndris — or US equivalent — have tried their hardest to get the Renegade Trailhawk stuck. They couldn’t, which may spell big trouble for the segment of the market containing the likes of the Range Rover Evoque and the VW Tiguan. The rock supergroup of 4x4s is back on stage.

Redlining with green power

Tractors, trucks and trailers, mowers and milking gear all took a beating this winter. Those using yesteryear’s ‘cheap’ products to keep corrosion out of tools and toys, paid the price. Seized machinery, failing electronics and rusty sheds were the result, meaning expensive repairs and wasted time. Professionals know the best products are the most cost effective and fishermen note that the big boys like Hampidjan or Sanford Fishing use CorrosionX. Clever hunters have worked out that the CorrosionX they buy is what our own navy, coastguard and most air forces of the world use in their weaponry. The product is also helping power companies and wastewater works around New Zealand. These guys never settle for second best, so why would you? CorrosionX waterproofs electronics in the milking shed, keeps the rust out of hydraulic fittings and un-seizes wheel nuts and bolts on a logging truck faster than

you can eat your pie. Applied in seconds, even on wet or rusty surfaces, but with no limit on its shelf life, it will never go dry or sticky. Neutral on rubber and plastics, it is an extremely long lasting corrosion inhibitor, a super fast penetrant and three times better lubricant than engine oil. It is also MPI approved as C11 (same as lanolin), non-flammable and safe to 39,000 volts. Try its sister CorrosionX Heavy Duty for parts needing lubrication that often get submerged, like your boat trailer. Have a great summer with your toys and tools in perfect shape. CorrosionX is MPI approved C11, ideal for the farm, fishing and public areas. Outstanding lubrication factor of 0,4. Never dries, separates or evaporates. Unlimited shelf life. Ultrathin application. CorrosionX waterproofs old and new electronics/electrics in all machinery, trucks and installations. Safe on rubber, insulation, neoprene and all plastics. Safe to 39.000 Volt. CorrosionX Heavy Duty forms a dripless, dynamic, non-hardening, self-healing film that stubbornly resists erosion by splash or spray.

Hybrid power has come a long way since the first Toyota Prius — the hybrid hypercar is here to stay

Hard to pronounce and even harder to beat — the Koenigsegg Regera (its name means ‘to reign’) is the current king of the mega cars. A bracket above even hypercars like the Swedish manufacturer’s old Agera, mega cars like the Regera, McLaren’s P1 and Porsche’s 918 use hybrid drive systems to blend petrol and electric horsepower into a volatile cocktail.

The Regera boasts 1,800hp in total, delivering approximately 1,500 at the wheels — neatly exceeding that of the now positively Victorian looking Veyron — and it does it all with a single gear, thanks to a whole new drivetrain architecture dreamed up by Koenigsegg engineers to prevent the wholesale destruction of clutch plates during testing.

RURAL WHEELS

Getting the edge on the competition by Andy Bryenton

THE SIDE-BY-SIDE THAT’S GOT IT ALL

As Ford continue to go from strength to strength with their ‘world car’ formula — which has produced not just the phenomenal new Mustang but also surprise barnstormers like the Fiesta ST and Focus RS — it’s come time for them to tidy up the middle of their SUV lineup. Not wanting to be as confusing to customers as the array of choices confronting the would-be buyer of a Porsche 911 in one of its superfast variants, Ford in the antipodes have narrowed the field down to a tight four. At the top — biggest, most comfortable (and with off-road capabilities in the vicinity of some light military vehicles) is the very competent seven-seat Everest. At the other end of the scale sits the peppy little EcoSport. Step up from there and you’ll find the crossover Kuga — set for its own upgrade in the very near future. Slotted in just below the Everest used to be the Territory, but it’s headed for the proverbial dusty trail, replaced by something new. That newcomer is the Ford Edge and it’s immediately apparent that this family-sized sports utility shares the design DNA of the Ranger and Everest. That big trapezoidal grille, distinctive wheels and side creases all tie in to the rest of the Ford stable. Purist will stick with the big powder-silver mags provided, but one could be forgiven for wanting to see the Edge kitted out with 22-inch carbon black rims. Unlike Everest and Ranger, which share a common platform despite being as different as cats and dogs in the fine detail, the Edge is every-panel-new.

BUY DIRECT FROM THE IMPORTER!

The new Ford Edge a family sized SUV

The Edge first debuted at the LA motor show in 2013 — geological eras ago in auto terms, one would think. But the addition of new tech like Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment touch screen system and, of course, the choice of everything up to a turbo-boosted v6 under the hood make the version which will come to Kiwi shores cutting, well, Edge. Some have compared it to BMW’s big, imposing X5 — favourable — noting that it comes for X3 money. Here that means inevitably it will face off not against euro lux G-wagens, but against Toyotas, Mazdas of the CX variety and the plucky fan favourite Kia Sportage. Kiwis are sure to want actual off-road ability to mix it up with towing power and kid-friendly long-haul seating comfort.

It looks like a winning formula. Spacious, clever (it even has active noise cancelling speakers to deaden road noise) and with power to spare, the Edge is a fine replacement for the Territory. Though bigger families or serious adventure campers may still want to step up to the Everest for that third row and additional dog-room, the Edge looks set to satisfy that growing sector of the market who consider a traditional station wagon too small, but a big diesel powered SUV too large for their liking.
