Georgie, an MPI labrador, demonstrated her sniffing skills on stage recently by locating dead stink bugs hidden in a harvesting machine at the New Zealand Winegrowers conference in Blenheim. MPI will have two trained dogs ready to sniff out stink bugs this summer, including a specialist dog to assist with detecting the pest in the event of an incursion,” says MPI border clearance director Steve Gilbert. “While we do our best to prevent this unwanted pest coming into New Zealand in the first place, we need to be prepared if something slips through our border defences. “Studies by the United States Department of Agriculture and our own trials show that dogs have huge potential to help detect stink bugs when they cluster in groups.” Mr Gilbert says the stink bug dogs will also assist with biosecurity detection work at the border, including

locating bugs on imported vehicles and machinery. “Georgie is an experienced detector dog and picked up the new scent very quickly. This suggests it should be relatively easy to train other MPI dogs at short notice for stink bug detection work.” The stink bug season will start on September 1. Mr Gilbert says MPI will again be stepping up its efforts over the spring and summer months to stop the brown marmorated stink bug from reaching New Zealand. “This will include carrying out increased inspections of vessels and goods from the United States and countries in Europe where the bug is established.” Brown marmorated stink bug would have a serious impact on New Zealand’s horticultural industries if it became established, he says. “Preventing a stink bug invasion is one of MPI’s highest biosecurity priorities.”

Regional Plan open for comment

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES September 2017

Oi!

by Paul Campbell

Public comment is being sought by the Northland Regional Council on what is effectively an updated rulebook for the way water, air, soil and coast are used and managed in the region. NRC chair Bill Shepherd says the council’s Proposed Regional Plan will be formally notified on Wednesday, September 6, with a 10-week window for public consultation. The new document will replace the council’s three existing regional plans, which are now over a decade old. “It’s not an understatement to label it one of — if not — the most important documents council has consulted on for many years,” he said. “For starters, despite its significance, this new plan is less than a quarter of the combined size of the three plans it will replace. It has been more than three years in the making, and represents substantial input by numerous stakeholders along the way.” A first draft of the plan was released last year as a ‘road-test’. “The feedback we received from nearly 300 people and organisations as part of that really helped us refine what the plan is today. Among changes are new limits on taking water from rivers, lakes and aquifers, making it easier to get

permission for mangrove removal and new stock exclusion rules for rivers, drains, wetlands and lakes. In a new approach to fresh water management, the Proposed Regional Plan also has some tailor-made rules for five priority water catchments; Doubtless Bay, Pouto, Waitangi, Whangarei and Mangere. “Stakeholder groups within each of these five catchments developed plans to address freshwater-related issues of particular concern to them,” Chairman Shepherd says. “My colleagues and I would like to acknowledge and thank group members for their collaborative efforts and hard work over the past couple of years.” To see the full Proposed Regional plan go to www.nrc.govt.nz/newregionalplan — as well as the plan itself, the site also contains a suite of background reports and technical documents. Full plans for the five priority water catchments are available at: www.nrc. govt.nz/catchmentplans Submissions can be made until 4pm, Wednesday, November 15.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

A horse riding dream by Ann Morgan

With a goal to become a professional horse trainer, Sapphire O’Connell works on the family farm she grew up on in Broadwood with the focus of educating horse riders and owners how to properly care for their animals.

“W

e grow beef and graze horses on the property. We have 15 horses of our own and I milk our dairy cows and raise calves,” says Sapphire. “I take in troubled horses and train them for clients. I get rid of their naughtiness or bad habits, and teach the owner all about horse care and control. Sapphire has three sisters and they all ride along with their parents. “I didn’t ride until I was 10 years old. Our neighbour needed someone small to ride his pony and asked me, and that is when I caught the bug. “He taught me a lot but moved away from the area so I had a break. When I was 15 years old my sister left home

and I inherited her horse Rusty, — he is a 14-year-old thoroughbred.” Sapphire and Rusty won the Pawarenga Sports Day cross country event this past New Year’s Eve. “We enter the sports day most years — it is a great family day. We have volleyball and fun stuff for the children, iron man and women competitions, and races up and down the beach, as well as the ‘Haimona Pirini and Hone Tamati Memorial cross country’ horse event. The day is a fundraiser for the three maraes at Pawarenga. “I wore my gopro camera on my helmet this year for the cross country and put the footage on facebook and it had more than 600,000 views. “It was

an amazing race with lots of the riders going bareback. I was super nervous as I didn’t know the course and had to pull Rusty back and tell the other riders to go ahead so we could follow. When we got to the gravel road I knew where I was and overtook them. “I didn’t know the other riders prior and now I know most of them. It is a really good place to meet people in the area and every race is a memorial to a family that belongs to the maraes. Some of the riders rode over the hill from Mitimiti and others travelled from Rawene. All the local areas get represented. “This area is really beautiful remote country. I have three horses that I ride, plus young horses and clients’ horses to care for. “Clients come from as far as Maungaturoto. I don’t advertise, it is through word of mouth and in the past year I have retrained 10 horses. “Training is about building trust and I use a natural pressure and release style that the horses understand. If they are scared of a saddle blanket, you brush them with the blanket until they get used to it and know it is safe. “I enjoy the fact that they put a lot of trust in me. I have trained a wild horse. When I first got her you couldn’t stroke her past her shoulders — she would kick out and run away. Now I can pat her anywhere because she knows she is safe.” The first horse Sapphire trained, Moccachino, was sold to a person in Kerikeri and they are going to compete her in the Special Olympics. “That is so exciting to have a horse I trained to be competing. It is important to be kind to your horse otherwise they do shut their personality down and become like robots instead of having a nice character and individual uniqueness. As a trainer I focus on getting relaxed and easy to control

horses and help owners and riders understand the animal in their care, right down to what they feed them. Sometimes horses lack certain minerals so we feed ours NPC health minerals. It is a New Zealand brand specifically formulated for New Zealand horses. You really see a difference, especially if their hooves are cracked and crumbly. “Riding is in the family and my sister Jade is the reason I ride now because she gave me Rusty and I am really appreciative of that. “We live self-sufficiently and I love it because everything is so much nicer, and we all help tend the garden and if we can get heritage seeds we do. “Living in a more remote area and having the open land to gallop my horse on is a wonderful way to live.”

GIVING OTHERS

Opportunities by Ann Morgan

Emmy Harris lives in the small settlement of Tauhoa in the Kaipara on the family sheep and beef farm with her partner Geoffrey and their three children. It is here the family help other children to be able to compete at their local Ag Day.

“O

ur family farm in Pakiri had beef cows and we reared calves — I have always loved animals and enjoy the farming life. It is great for children and it is important for them to learn to care for the animals,” says Emmy. “I became a dairy farmer until we moved here to Geoffrey’s family farm. Our daughter Whitny is now 16 years old and always loved Ag Day and consistently did well. “We were rearing calves and she decided it would be nice to help another local family to have the opportunity to compete in Ag Day because they were not in a position to have calves.” Last year was the first year Whitny helped the Manukau boys and Preston received the champion calf award.

“That encouraged them to want to keep learning. We have a selection of calves and let them choose which one they would like to work with.” The boys get off the school bus every day at Emmy’s house and Whitny teaches them how to care for their animals. “Whitny does a lot of the coaching — she is the expert at it and having someone near their own age is really good as well, and it gives her a chance to develop her leadership skills. “She loves calves and likes to win so training the boys correctly is important to her.” They weigh and mix the milk powder, add supplements and are taught how much to give each calf. They learn to lead once they are bonded with the calf after a couple of days. If the weather is

In the afternoons they are fed meal and have a bottle whilst they lead them around — that is how they start teaching them. The boys stay over on Friday nights and work with their stock on Saturday. “Some Ag Days are strict on loose hair on the animal’s belly and the boys brush their calves daily. They have silk waterproof covers and this helps make their coats nice and shiny. “Entrants are allowed to get calves after July 1 so choosing them early helps

get them nice and big. The children have to do everything themselves to care for the animals. “We believe learning animal care young is instilling good skills and knowledge to raise their own animals for meat. There is nothing like home grown food and looking after animals properly is important if the children want to become farmers. “It teaches them life skills, responsibility, the importance of proper care and maintenance.” Prescott says he likes spending time with his calf Parker, an Angus cross Jersey bull and brush him and take him for a long walks for training.

“We have a bridge to train them to walk over and he’s already good at it. We feed them milk with some molasses and moozlee calf food and hay. “When we are finished we put their covers on and they go back to the paddock and then we wash their bottles and buckets. I enjoy learning about what calves need to eat and drink to be big and healthy.” Preston says after school he enjoys caring for and training Pepi — a Shorthorn cross Friesian heifer. “Last year was my first time ever doing Calf Club day and I had an Angus cross Friesian steer and we won Champion Calf — all my hard work paid

off. I have learnt a lot about caring for calves, feeding them and preparing them for show day. We all like to learn how Whitny was so successful at her Calf Club days.” Emmy is hoping to have a big calf shed built in the future, with everything set up for other children to have the opportunity to have calves to rear for Ag Days and shows. “It is very rewarding and it would be great to see others do the same in their areas. “You never know what influence you are having in a child’s future. Being positive and giving positive experiences is a good thing.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Home is where Ayla Miller, former Northland Farming Lifestyles writer now travelling in Asia, reports from Thailand.

I

t’s a dreary Sunday morning in Phibun Mangsahan. I can hear the forlorn sound of a rooster crowing in the distance and the occasional whirr of a skill saw as a new flat is being built next door. A cup of very average instant coffee is steaming beside me. Despite the romantic ideas I fed myself with about travel, I’ve realised you can never escape the mundanity of the everyday. You can only learn to embrace it, and that, quite frankly, is a relief. Once you’ve managed that you can stop running. I have to admit during the last month and a bit my brain has been in New Zealand following the election news. Everyday there have been new campaign

promises, policies, interviews, live press conferences, posed photos and opinions splashed across my newsfeed. Some opinions have sparked heated debates between me and my friends, and politics has been the topic of most recent conversations. If there is one thing that’s finally sunk in over the last few months, it is the amount of room for improvement there is in New Zealand at the moment, despite us having a comparatively high standard of living. There I was, desperate to get out of New Zealand and volunteer in Nepal, when there is so much work to be done in our own backyard. My mother told me this before I left and she was right (as

usual), but I guess sometimes you have to experience things for yourself before you fully understand. Travel has definitely made me glad to call NZ home, and the recent conversations have made me want to protect what we have and stop things slipping back any further. When I return I’ll endeavour to harness some of the anger that’s been stirred up and use it as motivation to actually DO something instead of just talking about it. I’ve also been thinking a lot about empathy and what it means. It’s been something that’s come up a lot lately. The more you learn about the world and the obstacles people face, naturally, the more understanding you gain. Simply being exposed to people who are different to you can change your perspective and this is why travel can be so eye opening. At the same time I think empathy is something that

doesn’t necessarily have to come from experience. Just because you haven’t experienced something yourself doesn’t mean you can’t try to understand it. This was a discussion that came up a lot with my friends and in the media recently. It was leading the national conversation about what kind of world we want to live in especially after Metiria Turei announced she had lied to WINZ in order to provide for her child. Her defendant’s begged for the other camp to have some empathy. Perhaps, because of the way our society is organised under capitalism, empathy isn’t immediately financially rewarded and therefore we are taught to see it as weakness? I’d like to think that helping people up instead of kicking them when they are down leads to closer, happier, healthier communities, which results in a flourishing economy in the long run.

VOTING HAS STARTED, DROP IN AND VOTE NOW. Check your EasyVote pack elections.org.nz 0800 36 76 56

This conversation about what we value as a nation is so important, and whilst we are on the subject I’ll take this opportunity to remind everyone to vote on September 23rd! It’s a privilege and throwing it away is an insult to everyone in the world who wishes they could vote but can’t. Back in Phibun there’s only one more week of teaching left before I hit the road. It’s weird to think I won’t ever see my kids again. They’ll grow up and go on to live lives I’ll know nothing about. I’ll miss them a lot. It’s always surprising the things you learn from each new experience. I never thought I’d learn so much about my own country whilst living in rural Thailand. Nor did I think I’d find out what lights that angry fire in my belly whilst being so far away from the things that light it. So long Phibun Mangsahan! I’m glad we met. Another chapter almost over.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Pay attention!

Organics on the radar by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

A quick phone call from my neighbour Eru enticed me to attend a meeting at the Poututerangi Marae in Te Puna. The main speaker was Mike Scaddan a previous headmaster of Te Puna School, a strong advocate to stop the use of toxic chemical sprays throughout the Te Puna kiwifruit, avocado and citrus orchards.

At the end of World War II, large chemical conglomerates who were manufacturing and selling inhumane gases during the war, turned these toxic products towards pest and disease to continue the cash flow. Initially, the people accepted these toxic sprays as a new way to control pest and disease, however, with the heavy overuse of these deadly sprays it didn’t take long for the pest and disease to become immune. So, we have a new problem on our hands — how do we control the pest and disease? At present, globally, we are in the midst of pest and disease and authorities don’t know how to handle it. As a commercial grower, The Ministry of Agriculture had me on a weekly spray programme of two fungicides and three insecticides — saying prevention is better than cure. The more I sprayed the more I had to spray, so after eight years I changed my regime. At the time I was working with a multi-mineral, microbial

rich solid fertiliser — Rok Solid, and a multi-mineral, microbial rich liquid fertiliser — Oceans100. My belief was that with all this available natural mineral I was feeding the plant, the plant would be able to fix its own immune system. And that’s how it happened. That saved a lot of time and money. Plants grown as crops are susceptible to all manner of pest and disease and when pesticides are used the plants are coated in toxic sprays, whereby they cannot develop their own natural immunity; in a live, living, multi-mineral, microbial rich soil the plant has all the necessary equipment to protect itself and build immunity. In a chemical programme the plants are weak and continually need more chemical inputs, which is what the ‘chemical — treadmill’ is all about, and worse than that, these toxic chemical sprays are going straight into the food chain. According to Patrick Holden, CEO of Sustainable Food Trust, ‘we are locked into a cycle of ever-increasing industrial farming based on a chemical mindset and a reductionist approach, and we desperately need to break free of it. “

When we pick up a handful of live soil, it’s hard to imagine all the activity that is happening at a microscopic scale within it and the powerful impact it has. This web of life in a healthy soil is a magical world of interaction that science is only just beginning to understand. It is essential that farming recognises and understands the importance of microorganisms and their ability to transfer natural minerals into a plant available form; locking these minerals into the humus they produce to stop the minerals from leaching. This humus also stores water, increasing water retention quality in the soil and on the farm. ADVERTORIAL

Matt King, National candidate for Northland

Mark Mitchell — National MP for Rodney

“There are many reasons why I put my name forward to represent you as your member of parliament. Uppermost among them is that I live here and have first-hand knowledge of the issues and opportunities that exist for Northland.

“I am proud to be part of a National government that has built a strong economy that allows us to invest in the things that matter like training more teachers, building more schools and roads, and cleaning up the environment.

‘Second, I believe that there is only one political party that can make a real difference—dealing with the issues, delivering on the opportunities. That is the National Party—the National government. ‘It is a privilege to be standing for them to represent you. As a proud local, I have the knowledge and experience to advocate for you, your family and our communities, in a National-led government that is delivering results. “National and Bill English’s strong financial management, and your hard work, means Northlanders are getting ahead. Here in Northland, government investment is at an all-time high. We’re building new roads, upgrading old ones, improving our schools, putting more cops on the beat, and investing in support for our most vulnerable. We’ve lifted family incomes, we’re making healthcare more affordable, and we’re ensuring our children have real opportunities to reach their full potential.

We are committed to working for rural communities. A successful primary sector is central to our plan to create more jobs, lift incomes, and build a more productive and competitive economy. The government’s Primary Growth Partnership allocates $724 million to the development of 21 primary industries including red meat, lifestyle wines (an initiative partnering with 15 contributing wineries to develop highquality, low-calorie wines), avocados, venison and more. Our clean, green international brand depends on cleaning up our waterways; we’re committed to this to the tune of $450

“We can do all of this because we’re in a position to afford it — and because National is focussed on delivering these things for you. “On the other side of the coin, the opposition remains bitterly divided, with an untested team that is promising everything to everyone with no thought how they’d pay for it. A chaotic Labour/Green/NZ First Government would put everything we’ve achieved at risk and take Northland backwards. “But for me, it is more than that. For me, it is personal — I live here, Sarah and I are raising a family here. We want the best for Northland — for our communities, for our families and for our future. The best way to ensure that is for Northlanders to show our strength, show our confidence, show our belief, and in this election vote for the party and the person who can keep up the progress for you and your family. “That means party vote National and electorate vote Matt King. Those votes together will make a real difference.

million. Another $450 million will be dedicated to improved broadband in rural areas and better coverage of cell phone ‘black spots’. We are increasing staffing at rural police stations so that 95 per cent of the population lives within 25 kilometres of a 24/7 police presence. This election you are faced with a stark choice between a government that will continue to move us all forward or a chaotic Labour/Greens/ NZ First coalition with incoherent, uncosted policies. The only way to secure another strong, National government is by party voting National. Hon Mark Mitchell

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back.

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

TESTIMONIAL

Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate. De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

WHANGAREI

Northland Hockey Association 45 Park Ave, Kensington, Sat 30 Sep - Sun 1 Oct 10am - 4pm

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

NECK PAIN?

Come along for a free treatment Inversion helps to:

Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Data to help Northland

NorthSouth Multi Media are looking for a full time proof reader and classified sales person.

Funding from the Regional Growth Programme of up to $800,000 for 3-D aerial mapping of Northland will provide the region’s primary industries with highly accurate, free data to make better informed business decisions.

This role requires you to have: • Good computer skills • Able to work in a team • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written • Excellent grammar & spelling

LiDAR is a remote sensing tool which uses laser pulses to generate large amounts of highly accurate geographical terrain data. “The new data will give Northland an edge by which better informed decisions, in a wide range of areas across public and commercial businesses, can be made,” says Ben Dalton, the government’s senior regional official for Northland. “Uses for the data include infrastructure design and investment, urban planning, flood plan mapping and numerous uses across the primary sector in agriculture, forestry and horticulture. “On the farm the data could be used to create 3-D models of natural resources such as tree and fence lines, and water flows and water catchments for irrigation planning. Forestry operators can assess and forecast the yield of a forest, while horticulture companies can use the same data to assist with their sustainable land management and productivity.” A Cessna twin engine aeroplane, modified for LiDAR surveying will be used because the plane can be flown safely at low altitudes over urban areas. Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd, said the joint central and local government initiative would allow Northland to undertake the most comprehensive LiDAR survey done in the country. “The data will have enormous practical value for Northland’s economic and environmental health, at a cost that is affordable for our ratepayers. The LiDAR surveying is expected to start in the coming months and be completed in 2018 when the data will become available free to the public.” Land Information New Zealand Group manager Positioning and Resilience Graeme Blick says LiDAR is an important dataset for New Zealand. “The Northland LiDAR project will contribute to our efforts to improve the quality of elevation data across the country — supporting economic growth and New Zealand’s resilience to natural disasters.” Government funding for the project comes from the government’s Regional Growth Programme, co-led by the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment. Land Information New Zealand also provided part of the funding. The Northland Regional Council, Far North District Council, Kaipara District Council and Whangarei District Council have collectively contributed $1 million to the project. The LiDAR survey is part of the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan which contains key projects aimed at increasing jobs, incomes and investment in regional New Zealand. Creating your wedding Your wedding day is one of the happiest days and biggest events of your life. Organising your big day does not have to be overwhelming. With a little bit of forethought and planning the process can go smoothly making the whole experience a positive one Thinking about the dress and the venue — the style of cake, photographer and menu — setting a budget and being determined to stick to it is the first step to less stress on the day and after the event. There are many decisions that need to be made and a budget helps avoid money woes on the honeymoon and beyond. Once a realistic price has been set, begin to make plans for a day that reflects your personality and life together. Establish a date and book a photographer early to prevent disappointment. Ensuring you have a good photographer is important as the photos ultimately are the memories you will have forever. Ask friends for suggestions or research websites for photographers that present an image style that you like. Meet with the one you choose so you can discuss what you like and see if you are comfortable with them. Ask if they offer a pre-wedding shoot. Look at venues for the ceremony and reception early as depending on the time of year these can be difficult to secure. Weddings can also be held on a family farm, in a church or on a beach. The big day can range from

traditional religious ceremonies to those that personally reflect the values of the individual couple. When planning your guest list it is helpful to establish how many guests you want to invite. Choosing the dress and suit is also a decision to ensure you are completely comfortable and confident on the day, and the flowers are also important, whether they be from a florist or hand picked from the family garden. The bouquet adds the finishing touch. The

cake is a tradition that allows the couple to let their personality shine through. A five-tier fruit cake or a more modest creation — one thing is for certain, it must taste great and look beautiful. Most importantly, the wedding day marks the beginning of your life together as a married couple and celebrating that love with family and friends. It is your big day and no matter what you do and how you do it, if it is what you want, that is all that matters.

Preparing for marriage

Both different, and same sex marriages are legal in New Zealand and there is the choice of marrying through a registered marriage celebrant or having a civil union. Whatever decision you make, you decide when and where to get married and if you want to write your own vows for the ceremony or use standard ones. It is important to note that only registered celebrants can perform weddings or civil unions and you need to arrange a celebrant before you can get a marriage licence. You can’t get married or have a civil union without a marriage licence. You need to arrange this at least three working days before you want to get married. When searching for a celebrant you can look by name, location or through a church or organisation. Each celebrant charges their own set fee and this is paid directly to them. If you’re getting married at a registry office you will be married by a Registrar of Marriages and you do not need to find your own celebrant. These ceremonies are held during normal office hours and standard vows are used — you can not customise the ceremony. You will need to have at least two witnesses and the number of guests you can invite depends on the office you are getting married in. Anyone can marry in New Zealand, as long as you are not: already married or in a civil union, unless you’re changing your relationship with the same person; under 16 years old — if you are 16 or

17, you need your parent’s consent, or closely related by birth, marriage or adoption — the full list of people you can’t marry is on the back of the marriage licence form. You can change your civil union to a marriage (or your marriage to a civil union) without dissolving your current relationship. To do this forms need to be completed and another marriage or civil union ceremony must be held. You don’t usually have to do anything special or complete any forms if you want to change your name after you get married or have a civil union. You can keep your last name, take your husband, wife or partner’s last name, hyphenate or use a combination of both your last names. When you get married, you will

be sent a form to update your details on the electoral roll, otherwise, you can just start using your new last name. Different organisations have different rules for proving ID, but you can usually use your marriage certificate if you need proof to show you’ve taken your partner’s last name. There are forms available to change your name on your driver’s licence and passport. Your New Zealand marriage or civil union certificate is an official record of your marriage and can be used as official evidence of your marriage.

Accommodation and honeymoons A wedding means guests and accommodating those that may have travelled from afar, and of course the bride and groom on their special night. After months of preparation and planning, ensuring all your accommodation needs are met is one of the final parts of your special day. Often, having guests stay at the same location can create a ‘reunion’ environment for those who know each other, or an opportunity to make new friends. Take into consideration any ‘special needs’ your visitors may have including

wheelchair access or a cot and babysitter for those that they need to bring babies with them. Don’t forget special food requirements also for those who have food allergies, are lactose intolerant, gluten free, or celiac. For the bride and groom, extra care should be taken in choosing accommodation for the honeymoon night. Visit a few hotels and see

Is there a spa bath or any other special features to make the night more memorable. The honeymoon should be extra special as this is no ordinary time in your life and you will be glad there is time to relax on the other side of your wedding day. Read up on destinations you may like to go, whether near or far. Research

flights and hotels, and create your itinerary. If you are travelling abroad decide if you are going to pack special food treats to help save costs. Don’t forget beautiful lingerie to add to the romance. Taking time to invest in special items will add to the enjoyment of your memories. CROP & PASTURE PREP Water is a first consideration

IN STOCK NOW!

When considering cropping options, the irrigation of the property and the type of water delivery system used needs to be a priority at the top of anyone’s list. There are various types of pressurised systems available that have high capital and operating costs but may utilise minimal labour and conserve water. A variety of other systems are relatively less expensive to construct and operate but these may have high labour requirements. It is advisable to research the costs of maintenance and expected life along with an array of annual costs like energy, water, depreciation, land preparation, maintenance and labour. Once the water equation is taken care of, ensure there is a plan for the care and maintenance of the land itself. There is a growing trend with crop farmers moving more toward sustainable crop production which steers them away from the use of commercial pesticides. Several alternative measures are available including ‘integrated pest management’ — to protect crops from insects and weeds. IPM includes monitoring and identifying pests before they become a threat. Using plants in ‘companion planting’ that are natural insect repellants means commercial pesticides only need to be

used sparingly when other methods fail. For intercropping place plants close together to reduce the available area for weeds to take hold. This also encourages plant diversity to avoid insect and pest infestation. Companion planting uses plants that are natural pest repellants such as marigolds and other plants that are more attractive to pests than the primary crop. Other plants are used to attract beneficial insects to the crop. Mulching controls weed growth — with minerals replacing the home garden ‘newspaper’ mat. Ground cover plants are grown below the main crop to combat weeds. Organic fertilisers increase soil biodiversity and have been shown to increase the uptake of nutrients by plants. There is also evidence that use of organic fertilisers improves the nutrient value of the plants themselves. Intercropping, crop rotation, and mulching are sustainable crop production methods that help replenish and improve the soil by introducing plants that pull nitrogen from the air and release it into the soil or plants that

can be turned under after their growing season to add additional nutrients. Crop rotation also increases yields, while monocropping has been implicated in declines in crop yield and loss of nutrients from the soil. Rotating crops allows soil to ‘rest’ and replenish vital micronutrients, microbes, and other important components, ultimately ensuring stock have good quality nutritious food.

Herbicide

Shave days off your burndown & regraze time.

Every farmer needs an edge when it comes to pasture burndown and resistance management. And Sharpen® really delivers. Mixed with glyphosate, Sharpen® is the only herbicide in New Zealand powered by Kixor®, a unique active ingredient specially created to increase broad-spectrum control of previously hard-to-control broadleaf weeds. Now with a label extension, Sharpen® delivers outstanding burndown results and an incredibly fast 2 day withholding period for grazing. It’s good news for maize growers too. Used with acetochler, Sharpen® works for pre-emergent weed control in maize. Visit agro.basf.co.nz for more details or visit your local distributor.

Balancing pasture Maintaining a good balance between managing pasture and the cattle to maximise sustainable profit is an important part of pasture-based dairy farming. Optimising future pasture production through grazing management and quality helps with milk solids production and reproductive performance.

Pasture intake is generally affected by the quality and quantity of the available pasture offered daily and the tools of grazing management include frequency and intensity of grazing. Pasture production and quality are mainly affected by the amount of pasture and grazing intensity. Information from DairyNZ says pasture and herd performance are optimised by having sufficient quality feed on an annual basis to meet cow demand and by allocating this feed. that is eaten to meet the average cover targets for the farm. Estimate the area and pre-grazing cover required for the cows based on the target grazing residual, and adjust after observing if the cows achieve a ‘consistent, even, grazing height’. It is good to treat pasture as a crop and remove that which has grown since the last grazing and prevent post-grazing height increasing over the season. Distribute pasture cover between paddocks in a feed wedge to ensure that high quality feed is offered on all paddocks. Over the season the height of post-grazing residuals does not change but the dry matter mass does increase. This is the value of using ‘clicks’ on the Rising Plate Meter or one formula for the RPM for the season.

The decisions about grazing frequency are often a result of farmer preference due to specific farm characteristics, for example even/uneven paddock sizes, shape of the farm, soil types, and labour availability. The number of times fresh pasture is offered within a day does not affect dry matter intake or milk production and grazing frequency does not affect grazing time, rumination time or resting time of cows. As growth is influenced by a range of factors. There is no research evidence that the frequency of grazing — 12 versus 24 hours — affects pasture growth. It is much more important to maintain appropriate residuals of 1,500-1,600 kilograms DM/ha.

Born to drive Vuletich Contracting is a company committed to providing Northland with professional and reliable agricultural contracting, operating a fleet of modern well maintained equipment, specialising in hay, silage, cultivation, seeding and spraying. Owned and operated by father and son Warren and Eden Vuletich, the company is based in Pakotai Mangakahia Valley, offering excellent service to Whangarei, Kaipara and Far North districts. Warren has over 20 years’ experience in the automotive engineering industry as a tutor as well as an engineer. He keeps all equipment to an excellent standard, ensuring that Vuletich Contracting is getting the job done on time and when you want it. Eden is not afraid of hard work. Upon leaving school he had a clear vision on what he wanted to do and what his passion was — agricultural contracting. As his mother says ‘he was born to drive’. To expand it and make his own mark on the family business, he spent two seasons working on the Western Australian wheat belt in 2016/17. He operated large seeding and spraying equipment and worked long hours on a 10,000 hectare cropping programme consisting of wheat, barley, oats, canola lupins and soybeans. Eden came away

from the season with skills to expand the family business into cultivation and seeding. Both Eden and Warren are extremely passionate and take a lot of pride in every job they do. From ground up every job taken seriously and every client is important no matter how big or small the job is. Farming often relies on the weather and timing is of great importance, so well maintained modern equipment and skilled operators, that don’t knock of at 5pm is key. With Northland’s weather being hard to rely on, the window of opportunity for optimum crop preparation and planting is often narrow. That’s why Vuletich Contracting has invested in GPS self-steering technology to allow 24/7 operation when the conditions are right. This technology guarantees accuracy ensuring minimum overlap and seed distribution. Vuletich Contracting will get your job done. Call them now to see what they can do for you. Harvesting needs good skills

Harvest time is a crucial time in the farm calendar and in years gone by it was more often than not a call-out to the neighbours, and arranging a schedule for someone’s new tractor to meet up with another’s bailing machine, with the local farming community sharing in costs. Now technology advances have seen the cost of equipment soar as GPS systems and computers have come to the fore in economic reaping of croplands, from grains to maise, to ground crops. With this development, contractors have become the harvesters of choice. Efficient use is vital and machinery sitting in sheds is not economic in any sense. Thus, feeling secure in hiring outside help is important. This has led to the formation of New Zealand Master Contractors Incorporated with a mission statement ‘to protect and build a strong organisation that provides a sustainable high quality service to the cropping sector. The NZMCI was formed by the horticulture and viticulture contracting industries in association with the Department of Labour, to acknowledge and reward compliance and best practice, aiming to provide employers with a reliable, skilled and professional labour force, and help improve sustainability and productivity in the horticulture, viticulture and seasonal industries. With domestic sales taken into account, the horticulture/viticulture industry is worth around $NZ 4.7 billion — making it New Zealand’s sixth largest industry. ‘Contractors are significant employers in the industry alongside

growers and post harvest facilities, particularly during the peak picking season,’ the NZMCI says. ‘However, there is continuing pressure to incur cost and achieve compliance with a range of employment, immigration, health and safety, and various quality assurance programmes. Unfortunately there is also a significant number of non-compliant and fringe ‘cowboy’ operators who continue in business with no aspiration to meet these requirements. The organisation meets with the senior executives of industry bodies such as HortNZ, New Zealand Kiwifruit

Growers, NZ Winegrowers and Pipfruit New Zealand, and uses the meetings to advance the interests of industry members who are good employers and operate compliant businesses. Quality cannot be beaten The Ultra Fine Lime company, owned and operated by Bruce Sisley, is the Northland distributor of PFP Fertilisers, which are a wide range of prilled lime and fertiliser products. Maglime, limephos or just straight prilled lime are our three core products, to which the following minerals and trace elements can be added; potassium copper, selenium cobalt, molybdimum phosphorus, sulphur calcium, boron iodine, iron manganese and zinc. These trace elements and minerals are available on demand, as well as your choice in limephos and two types of phosphate — reactive phosphate rock (RPR) and guano. Depending on your soil conditions, applying 250kgs per hectare of Ultrafine Limeprills will lift the pH level substantially, it will work immediately and will last over an 18-month or longer period. All our products are ideal for airlift as well as many types of ground application. Our products create no dust or waste, therefore no irate neighbours. Because of our very low application rates there are massive savings in both transport and spreading costs. The ultra-fine technology whether it is Lime or any of our customised mixes cannot be beaten for product quality or on ground cost. Especially when

250kg of Limeprills per hectare is as effective as 2.5 tonnes of Aglime per hectare. It’s been scientifically proven that reducing particle size increases Lime’s efficiency due to the available surface area of its calcium carbonate increasing dramatically as particle sizes are reduced.

First avocado export harvest Just Avocados, a specialist avocado service provider and exporter, kicked off the 2017-18 New Zealand avocado season with its first export harvest in early August in Houhora. “Fruit went to Australia, South Korea and Thailand,” says John Emett, Orchard Management and Grower Services for Just Avocados. The industry is in a lower crop season and according to Emett will produce an estimated 2.2 to 2.4 million export trays. “The total crop in Northland is 1.2 million trays, spread from Mangawhai to the Far North. It’s still early days for the crop from the north, but what we see at present is pleasing return crops from last season, good fruit size and fantastic cosmetic quality.” Northland has experienced significant activity in the avocado sector recently with approximately 600 new hectares currently being developed for large-scale avocado orchards. “The development in Northland is exciting to be involved in

and our team are assisting growers who are planting or converting large pieces of land to high quality commercial avocado orchards,” says Emett. Forty percent of Just Avocados’ volume will come from Northland this season and is supplied through a network of packing partners — T&G in Kerikeri, and Natural Touch in Whangarei. Supply from the rest of the North Island is handled through Just Avocados’ own dedicated facility in Katikati and through Te Puke-based Eastpak. Just Avocados offers growers nationally a personalised service across their orchards with technical advice, compliance assistance, and packing and exporting services. “We have the best grower services team in the industry because we are

able to take a personal approach with our growers, offer them the breadth of services they could require and tailor plans to suit,” says Emett. The Just Avocados Grower Services team expanded late last season with the addition of renowned technical adviser Erica Faber. “Erica brings over 20 years’ experience in horticulture, growing avocados, and providing technical advice which has had impressive success in South Africa. She has adapted her

experiences to New Zealand conditions and is transferring this to growers. “There is a feeling of empowerment among our growers who are now receiving advice they can understand, implement and see results from.” John Emett’s core responsibility is to assist growers from South Auckland to the Far North to achieve their orchard goals. A horticultural kaleidoscope

The subtropical climate of Northland has seen the success of many horticulturists across the region. The climate, combined with the wide diversity of soil has created an environment that sees a vast selection of crops thriving in the region. Many types of vegetables and a wide variety of fruit including kiwifruit, citrus, and berries are grown annually. The North has become well recognised as one of the prime subtropical growing areas for avocados and vineyards. Bananas are also making progress as newly established crops, along with other varieties of fruit normally grown in tropical areas. Vineyards across Northland are producing award winning wines, and the high quality olive oil made in the area is consistently receiving accolades both nationally and on the world stage. In the Kaipara, red, orange and gold kumara are produced on a commercial level and new varieties are coming onto the market. These include ‘purple dawn’ — they have a purple skin and flesh and are not as sweet as other varieties. They go well in a roast kumara salad. ‘Orange sunset’ has a bronze skin and orange flesh with a purple fleck to it and are great in a mash or baked. The Northland apiculture industry has become popular, especially in producing Manuka honey. The valuable Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is well-known for providing health benefits and with vast areas of Manuka forests, Northland honey is proven to have some of the highest

Horticulture is a productive industry in Northland and presents many opportunities for those on both farms and lifestyle blocks to be innovative and successful, whether it be in growing crops for markets or a more major project such as forestry, the region has proven to be a positive environment for growing.

Improving joint health (Part 1) The best part of what I do is to see improvements in those who have the courage to try something different. My client files are full of testimonies of those who have improved. Just this morning a client I have been helping for four months called for her monthly check in. When I first spoke with her she had a very sore hip and various muscle aches and pains. We made some changes to her diet and put her on a number of antiinflammatory and joint supporting supplements. As a result her hip has improved to the point she can walk again. Additionally she has much more energy and the vitamin D we added has helped a great deal with moods and general motivation. The body is quite miraculous. If you feed it the nutrients it really needs then dormant healing processes can then help restore body systems back towards normal. This is especially true for joints affected by osteoarthritis. In March I started helping a man in his 70s with painful arthritis in his knee, feet and hands especially his thumbs.

Worst of all was the joint where the thumb attaches to the wrist. This joint is highly susceptible to arthritis and it can be very disabling. When I spoke to him in June his feet and knees were much improved. He could now use stairs with ease. His hands and thumb have improved significantly and are still improving. While we made some dietary changes the main benefits came from increasing his Omega 3 fish oil to 6,000mg daily and adding a double dose of my joint formula. This meant he initially was taking 1,500mg of glucosamine, 1,500mg of super-high grade chondroitin and 200mg of my proprietary 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Feel free to contact me for more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. A Blue Do for cancer care It’s Blue September again and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

This year it is all about having a ‘Blue Do’ so get organised with some mates, colleagues and family, and arrange an event to spread the message and raise some funds to support the foundation. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do on the website. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue barbecue or a blueberry bake off? Or organise a Blue Friday like many workplaces organise. It really gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food, and focusses on awareness of prostate cancer. Jason Gunn has joined the great team of Blue September Ambassadors — he tells how his dad was diagnosed with

the disease, and how hard it was to talk about it and what the prospects might be. Fortunately for them the outcome was good. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, catching the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Find out more and register for a ‘Blue Do’ at blueseptember.org.nz

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

Proudly supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation this Blue September.

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

ADVERTORIAL

Smarter culvert calculations Farmers could benefit from fewer culvert blowouts and better paddock performance thanks to a new online tool. P&F Global have developed an online, easy to use culvert pipe calculator — the EUROFLO Culvert Calculator — and made it available on their website. P&F Global sales manager Joseph McLean said the new online calculator would transform the way people work out their culvert pipe requirements, allowing them to quickly and accurately figure out what they need. “Great customer service is at the core of our company values, and we are always striving to find innovative ways to help customers, while also providing the best product out there,’’ he said. Farmer Alan Sherman, had a sneak peek at the function and agreed that it was very easy to use. “Having used a lot of culvert pipes from P&F Global in the last 20 years I think this method of being able to calculate water flow will be a very useful tool.’’ Designed with the end-user in mind, the online calculator follows a simple three-step process: 1. Enter your catchment area and rainfall level to automatically generate your culvert pipe size; 2. Enter the length of your job to determine how many lengths of culvert pipe you need; 3. Enter your details and a quote is sent directly to your inbox.

For more than 20 years, P&F Global have sourced the most practical and affordable drainage pipes and fittings from around the world. Servicing the rural, commercial, civil, industrial and residential markets, these products are designed fit for purpose for New Zealand’s often challenging conditions. EUROFLO Culvert Pipe is the only twin wall culvert pipe with an external multiarch rib for strength and a smooth bore for faster flow and is ideally suited to all rural and civil needs. EUROFLO Culvert Pipe is quality you can rely on. Made in Europe it is designed to last for 100 years and is rust and maintenance free. EUROFLO is also the only pipe in the market with sizes from 160mm diameter all the way up to 2,150mm, and comes with a range of fittings, slotted versions, different SN ratings as well as the handy Go-In system to connect the pipe to sumps and other outlets. Check out the EUROFLO Culvert Calculator online at www.pandfglobal. com.

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Do you know what hoof trimming is all about? How would you rate your own or your staff’s hoof trimming skills?

DR & BA

GRANT ENGINEERING • Milking Machinery • Cowshed Pipework • Lathe & Milling Machining • Milking Machinery testing & quality control (same day repairs) • Aluminium & Stainless welding

Many people may answer that question with a certain amount of selfconfidence. ‘It’s not that difficult, right? I have seen vet’s trim cows. I have even watched professional trimmers. I think I do a pretty decent job’. Lameness is expensive. It is in the top three animal welfare problems, and along with mastitis and fertility, is in the top three main health costs on a dairy farm. It pays to take it seriously, and unfortunately, most people underestimate the skills and know-how required for proper hoof care. Just to put it into perspective, it takes 14 months to get a qualification in hoof care in Europe. Apparently, about 40% of trainees fail their exam after that time. I know that is at a professional level, but farmers are professionals as well, therefore their hoof care skills should be at a standard where the speed of recovery is similar to work performed by a professional hoof trimmer. We come across many cows that have been trimmed by farmers and end up

Ph 09 439 8248 Beach Rd, Dargaville

being worse off after the trim than they were before. A cow’s recovery does not necessarily reflect the quality of the trimming — most cows will recover without any outside interference. So, when we decide to intervene it needs to be done for the sole purpose of speeding up the healing process. I think a lot of cows in New Zealand are trimmed because it makes the farmer feel better, not the cow. This may be my bluntness coming through, but I see way too many cases that support this view. In reality, this is very understandable. Most farmers have had insufficient training, and because of my experience teaching final year vet students at Massey, I can say that even most veterinarians have minimal training in this important skill. How can you be confident that you are helping your cows if you don’t know what aspects of the trimming process are important, and why? We are planning a Hoof Care Expo at VeeHof Head Office on Coplands Road in Ashburton on the 17th of October. Along with demonstrations on hoof knife sharpening and claw block

Fred instructing in the process of trimming

applications, and an opportunity to observe and experience trimming with a grinder, there will be a one-hour seminar which will explain in more detail the rationale behind the hoof trimming process. This programme will run in the morning and be repeated in the afternoon, with lunch provided between sessions. Reservations are required for the seminar due to limited spaces. Tax on water?

POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys?

That’s got to be the scariest thing any farmer has heard this week. There has been a lot of discussion about these three words during the week, including ownership of it. One spokesperson has estimated consented water users would contribute around two billion dollars. Now the talk is that half will go to iwi and the other half will go towards fixing our polluted rivers and streams. What an irresponsible shambles. Then I remember — there is an election in six weeks. I think this has got a lot more to do with election vote grabbing than actually looking after rivers and streams. Maybe more about getting townie votes at the expense of farmers being whipped with another stick. A wild stab, which is all anyone is doing, is that only a quarter of that will be used for what it is intended. There is no longer any dispute that there is a problem with our rivers and streams and now the focus is on fixing the problem. After studying the process put in place to mitigate these problems and where the farming industry is focussing

their efforts, good progress is being made. River and stream fencing, riparian planting on water edges and nutrient budgeting are among these. A disturbing fact which has never been mentioned by media amongst all this noise is the cause of this pollution in our waterways. Where did all this begin? In March this year, after the release of the Waikato Healthy Rivers Plan, my column was entitled ‘Don’t blame the Farmers’. I still stand by that comment. The cause of excess phosphate and excess nitrate in our rivers is common sense yet it has never been mentioned. Farmers get all their fertiliser and nutrient advice from consultants who are appointed by the companies who sell the fertiliser. Despite the pressure on farmers to clean up their act, these major NPK fertiliser companies are still piling on more phosphate and unstable nitrogen than the soil can handle. Old outdated soil and fertiliser practises are keeping these farms in a primitive state reducing the soil’s

ability to hold on to nutrients and water efficiently. It’s time that the experts charged with the responsibility of our clean rivers’ future began addressing this issue and challenge these major fertiliser companies. This action alone will immediately mitigate the primary cause of our problems. This direct action alone will make more progress than two to five years of taxes, collecting vast amounts of money to be wasted on beaurocrats to discover what we already know.

Total Fert Ltd consultant Grant Fallon has a natural affiliation with the land and sustainable farming practices, and has worked in the agricultural/horticultural industry most of his working life. He was born and bred in Mangatawhiri, North Waikato, where his parents were farming after his father returned from serving in the second world war. “I have always been passionate about all facets of biology. I started working in orchards and glasshouses growing tomatoes and beans when I was still at college,” said Grant. He and wife Janice moved to their 42 hectares at Riponui in 1986 and farm the property the biological way. The land is primarily used for beef and sheep rearing, and they have planted 50 fruit trees in an orchard. “Modern biological farming uses nature and science to build the quality of the soil, with the understanding that healthy soil will be able to support healthy crops and livestock. This takes advantage of the natural processes, which promote good soil, healthy crops and healthy animals.” As a biological/organic fertiliser field consultant for 16 years, Grant has attended many instructional seminars in New Zealand and Australia, achieved

a level 5 NZQA certificate in organic growing and a certificate in small business management. “Excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides can upset the balance in the soil,” said Grant. “Productive soil is achieved by applying the correct volume and type of minerals after soil analysis. It is important to provide a food source for the biology and adopt best farming practices — stock rates, crop rotation and tillage methods. “These practices allow the natural system to develop superior soil structure and microbiology and improve crop quality. This helps increase stock yields and improves animal health and reduces negative environmental impacts by controlling waste such as leaching or effluent. “They also help control weeds, pests, diseases, and increase moisture content in the topsoil and improve drought resistance and the uptake of nutrients into the pasture and crops. “Many farmers are beginning to understand that natural fertilisers, along with best practice production methods, result in higher profitability of their farms, orchards and other agricultural productions.” Total Fert is BioGro certified and offers a full personal consultancy service and customised fertiliser blends for your requirements, including dairy, drystock, cropping and orchards, to suit your budget. “We take pride in being honest and trustworthy. More Mycoplasma bovis finds Federated Farmers is disappointed, but not surprised, to learn of three new finds of stock with Mycoplasma bovis. The affected properties confirmed by the Ministry for Primary Industries recently are all linked to Van Leeuwen Group farms where the cattle disease was first identified. “This latest identification is obviously disappointing but it was anticipated as the animals were traced back to the origin of the initial outbreak,” says Federated Farmers biosecurity spokesperson Guy Wigley. “It’s important to keep things in perspective and not unnecessarily increase anxiety levels amongst farmers. The reality is it exists in most countries and they manage it just fine with trade unaffected. “We know the frustration out there, but this is a complex bacterial infection which we have never encountered before here in New Zealand.” Mr Wigley says MPI was throwing significant resources at containing the disease and was remaining positive that it could be eradicated. “From what I understand testing is rigorous, with the MPI animal health laboratory expecting to test more than 39,000 samples in an extensive surveillance programme over the next three months.” Feds is supporting MPI’s efforts to communicate with farmers, providing information via fact sheets, websites

and public meetings. “Affected farmers are being informed on a regular basis about sample results. The fact is, it’s going to take several months to ascertain a definitive result.” Feds has heard talk among farmers who are bothered by MPI’s inability to identify affected properties, because of the Privacy Act. “Apart from the obligations under the law, this is not the time to incriminate other farmers who may be in a stressful state,” says Mr Wigley. “MPI is doing what it is obligated to do, and that is to acknowledge the privacy rights of those farmers who have bovis identified in their herds. It’s not a question of secrecy — it’s about protecting individual farmers and their businesses from unwelcome and unhelpful publicity. “We all need to stay together if we are to tackle this nasty cattle disease — that way we have a chance to eliminate it. “The industry as a whole is working with MPI and farmers themselves can do their bit, by practising best farm biosecurity measures through good hygiene and cleaning equipment and making sure you maintain separation between neighbouring herds.” Farmers should stay vigilant and report immediately to their vet any signs in their cattle of mastitis that doesn’t

RURAL WHEELS

Gunning for the crown by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to modern utes, many buyers entering the market feel they have a choice between two top contenders. There’s the Ford Ranger, riding high on years of awards and sales figures, and the Toyota Hilux, the once-all-powerful monarch of the rural roads, still slugging in a close second place. Now there’s a challenger so far out of left field it’s almost tempting to use a metaphor from recent Kiwi politics. The new face of LDV has been its range of big, dependable work vans for some time now, and they’ve gained traction with tradies and fleets in a big way. Now the company is bursting into the ute market with a four-wheel drive double cab that both looks the part, and carries a very affordable price tag. It’s called the T60, and it’s shaking up a sector already graced with new low-cost utes by Mahindra, Great Wall and Foton. T60 was first unveiled to the public during the National Feildays in June this year. Sales and marketing manager Warren Willmot says: “Feedback from the public display at Mystery Creek was incredible. The interest in this vehicle has been remarkable and now the customers who have signed up and been waiting for their T60s to arrive have the added bonus of the five year, 130,000km warranty.” LDV — manufactured by the immense SAIC autos company, China’s largest — plan to offer the T60 with both diesel and petrol engines, two suspension heights, three gearbox options and even the ability to switch from ‘eco’ fuel saving

The new LDV T60 builds on the strong reputation LDV’s vans have established in the local market

mode to ‘power’ mode with the push of a button. Stylistically, the T60 looks aggressive and sharp, with the big chromed grille and chunky roll bars we’ve come to recognise as many new utes’ homage to the F150 out of America. That’s no bad thing — the big Ford sells a unit nearly every five seconds, and is going strong after decades. LDV entered the market with a lot to prove, and their

vans, people movers and transporters have shown that they can tango with the best. It’s a bold move to step right into the tough ute market and even tougher to contest the crown held so tenaciously by Ford. But for the business or fleet buyer looking for value as well as practicality, the T60 may prove irresistible.

Building on a strong legacy by Andy Bryenton

Do you remember what you were doing in 1973? It’s safe to say that many of those reading this article were not even born back in the heyday of bell-bottomed trousers, stadium rock and the end of the war in Vietnam. But there’s a worker on Kiwi farms that’s still putting in dawn-to-dusk days despite first hitting the paddocks back when Nixon was in the headlines. Yamaha introduced their AG series of motorbikes to the local market after asking local farmers what they needed in a two-wheeler, and it shows. Simple additions to the already established dirt bike formula have become the standard for agricultural bikes, from the addition of a big kickstand plate through to gearing that allows riders to follow the herd even in thick mud. AG bikes of bigger sizes — up to 200cc — have appeared over the years, with this latter going beyond the farm and becoming a favourite with emergency aid workers and doctors in Africa. That shows how tough this little machine really is, but now Yamaha have expanded their legacy with a new AG 125 for the new millennium. The 2017 Ag 125 expands on the platform of Yamaha’s successful fourdecade commitment to Kiwi farmers, keeping all the best of the old but mixing in new features which have been garnered from both customer

feedback and engineering research. That means a revised suspension setup for a smoother ride, with a fully encased chain delivering power from a 124cc air cooled single cylinder four-stroke engine. The emphasis is on easy to handle reliability — a machine which is designed to start first time on frosty mornings, be frugal on fuel, but still able to tackle the gravel, mud, hilly terrain and other natural hazards on the farm. A raft of optional extras can expand the carrying capacity and all-round durability of the bike, but there’s no needless tinsel here — taking a leaf from the late great Henry Ford, you can have your AG 125 in any colour you like so long as it’s blue. The new Ag 125 has big gumboots to fill, but it’s stepping up to the task with a formidable wealth of knowledge behind it. For those who know and love their farm two-wheeler, this is the perfect replacement — that is, of course, if your old Yamaha AG ever runs out of puff at all.

From the farm to the front lines — Yamaha’s AG series have become the bike of choice for humanitarian aid as well as farming

Izusu AMT is a fully automated manual transmission, so you get the performance of a manual, but with two-pedal operation. There’s no clutch pedal in an AMT, so you can focus on what’s in front of you rather than worry about making gear changes. You can even move between manual and auto mode, giving you the ability to initiate the shifts yourself, or simply leave it in ‘drive’.

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

A letter to the unbelievers Sometimes in life you don’t have to be very clever to work something out. Take for instance a quad bike weighing 300kg and you find yourself trapped underneath it. Your face is slammed in the mud and you can’t possibly lift the bike off. Toxins are making their way around your bloodstream from your leg being crushed, and nobody is expecting you back for another two hours. It is then that the game is up and you wish something

QUADBAR

was holding the bike up a bit so you could wriggle out. Anything would do but it’s too late now. The bloke at the bike shop said “only idiots with no training end up like this.” I remember asking him about fitting a roll bar. “Oh no,” he had said, “we don’t believe in them, they can hurt you — you’re better just to jump off as you go over.”

“I have no doubt that if I did not have a Quadbar fitted, my accident would have been fatal!” — Rozel Farms “The Quadbar saved our employee from significant injuries.” — Colin van der Geest

For a Quadbar, call me, Stuart Davidson, owner of Quadbar NZ on 021 182 8115, Email sales@quadbar.co.nz or for more info go to www.quadbar.co.nz

I nod, thinking he knows best — he’s the expert and at least I’ve got my helmet on that’s making a big difference. I can’t move and my legs are so cold, I can’t breathe with the weight on me. End of story. John’s daughter found him crushed and dead after toxins in his blood had caused him to have a heart attack. For her, it was awful and since then struggles to sleep, has become anxious and doesn’t want to go to school. Mum and the other siblings are struggling as well — John was much loved by them and a popular figure in the area. This did not need to happen. If only he had trusted his common sense

and set his bike up to be safer. The quadbar has been around for six years, and surveys tell us that it works brilliantly — sometimes it’s the simple things that work best. Roll bars are now on ride-on-mowers, small tractors, tiny diggers and bobcats. It seems ridiculous that they are not standard on a quadbike. Quadbar Australis produces 100-plus quadbars a week and can’t keep up. Here in New Zealand the take up is much slower and once again surveys from Australia are glowing about the quadbar. In the end it is your choice, not the choice of your motorbike dealer.

ADVERTORIAL

Big bear has growl and bite Yamaha’s quad bike range have carried the names of various species of bears for some time now, evoking an image of the rugged North American forest and outdoors. Top predator in their environment, the Kodiak is no exception to this rule. The beast it’s named after is no lightweight, either! Yamaha engineers listened to farmers when developing this new mid-size bear. They wanted more off-road capability, more comfort and more convenience. The new Kodiak delivers this in spades. A new chassis combines with a wider footprint and an extremely roomy riding position that accommodates even larger riders comfortably. Big steps have been taken to ensure Kodiak combines real world toughness with easy-toride accessibility for farmers taking on the toughest terrain. But the same modifications make it a snap to adapt to, right down to the first time ATV user. Part of this versatility comes from plenty of power on demand. Like the outgoing Grizzly 450, the Kodiak packs a 421cc mill under the ‘hood’. But this engine is built to deliver even more torque to get out of muddy, sticky situations, and it’s on heavy duty rubber shock absorbing mounts for less vibration. Fuel injection designed by the same team responsible for Yamaha’s world-beating road bikes, means cold morning starts are no issue, and fuel economy has been improved as well. Like many new quads and UTVs, the Kodiak opts for CVT transmission,

The Yamaha Kodiak aims to be as tough and tenacious as its namesake

though this variable system comes with a few extra tricks. The system’s centrifugal clutch maintains constant belt tension which eliminates slipping and slamming of the belt at idle or engaged. This smooth progression prolongs belt life, reduces heat and improves durability.

Yamaha have also incorporated a sprag clutch to provide natural feeling all-wheel downhill engine braking. Kodiak is available in NZ from August 2017 in two variants — EPS and standard nonpower steer. The EPS model comes with a worklight while the non-power steer

model does not. Both models are fitted with steel wheels and are available in Yamaha’s trademark Steel Blue colour scheme, with tough, scratch-resistant and nigh shatterproof plastics to ensure this bear looks sharp even after a season or two of hard knocks on the farm.

DRIVE SAFE

Making the roads safer

On Rural Roads

While we get up to speed with the policies of various political parties in the coming elections, it is worth noting that whether or not these policies actually come to fruition, there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make our roads safer and more serviceable, particularly for the rural communities. Road safety is a focus area of the National Land Transport Programme up until 2018. It supports a sector-wide focus on creating a transport system increasingly free from death and serious injury. Over the past almost three years, $3.2 billion has being invested in road safety, which is around 23% of the total programme. Improving safety across all four parts of the system — roads and roadsides, speeds, road use, and vehicles — is at the heart of the NZ Transport Agency’s commitment to reducing road trauma. The focus is on creating a more forgiving road system, where making a mistake on the road should not cost a life or cause serious injury. To maintain the rate of progress, investment in the NLTP continues across all four parts of the Safe System targeted at risk. Many investment proposals work across multiple aspects. Managing speed on the network continues to be a priority. The speeds people travel at are not always appropriate for the design, purpose and safety level of many of our roads. Small reductions in speed can make a

big difference. By 2019, the Transport Agency aims to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on high-risk roads by 135 (10%) and reduce social costs by $130 million. Road safety promotion programmes complement investment in infrastructure, regulatory change and road policing. They target road user behaviour through a range of approaches — incorporating education, promotion and advertising. During the programme, $132 million will have been be invested in road safety promotion activities, $67 million in national activities by the Transport Agency and the balance, $65 million, in local activities delivered by councils throughout the country. The Transport Agency is continuing to implement road and roadside improvements, including high-risk intersections and rural roads.

37

North Auckland journey will have 52% of its investment directed at safety benefits. The regional improvements activity class invests in important roads outside the major urban areas to deliver better access to markets, improved resilience and a significant range of safety work. Local authorities will be co-investing in around $4 billion of local road maintenance and improvements. Around $251 million will have been invested in cycling and walking, including funding from the Urban Cycleways Programme. It is estimated that between $350 million and $400 million will have been invested in cycling in the three years to 2018. This also includes investment in cycling and walking facilities incorporated in state highway and local road projects.

Stepping up campaign

NZ Young Farmers is stepping up its mental health campaign among rural youth with a series of Good Yarn workshops around New Zealand, aimed at supporting vulnerable members. Following on from the launch of a documentary that featured stories of depression and suicide among members, the organisation will facilitate the mental health workshops in an effort to combat the increase in suicides, particularly among young rural males. Figures released recently by chief coroner, Judge Deborah Marshall, show the 20-24 year-old age group recorded the highest number of suicide deaths at 79 for the year ended June 2017. Of that, 61 of those deaths were males. Overall, it was the third year in a row that the number of suicides had increased. CEO Terry Copeland said he was saddened at the statistics. “Inevitably, the young rural male continues to feature more prominently

every year in the statistics and we must do all we can to halt that incline.” NZ Young Farmers were not immune to the statistics with a recent suicide of a popular member highlighting the need to put resources into the mental wellbeing of rural youth, he said. “The terminology around suicide is equally as important as the work taking place to prevent it. “While it is important that there is more talk in the media around suicide, the term they often use — ‘committed suicide’ — needs to be changed. That implies it is a crime and further stigmatises the issue. “We remain determined to eradicate that stigma and to foster a culture and network where talking about your feelings is welcomed.”

Terry Copeland NZ Young Farmers CEO

NZ Young Farmers will hold twelve Good Yarn Workshops throughout New Zealand from the middle of September until the end of November. The wellness workshops help participants recognise and respond appropriately to friends, family, farming colleagues or customers suffering from stress or mental illness. Mr Copeland said while the workshops were a vital step forward in dealing with mental health issues, it was also important to realise NZ Young Farmers could not carry the load alone. “We believe collaboration within our industry is part of the process going forward and we will be reaching out to

other agri-organisations that want to partner with us in relaying the message over coming months.” At the same time the NZ Young Farmers Mental Health documentary that featured several members who had been courageous in telling their story about depression candidly, continued to be viewed by a wide audience, he said. “The documentary remains a deliberate attempt by NZ Young Farmers to be transparent on the issue and we are pleased that it has been viewed widely.” To view the documentary go to ontheland.co.nz/search?search=nz+yo ung+farmers+mental+health
