There is still much work to be done. The government’s real intent and appetite for progress will be seen when the bill leaves the select committee and is reported back to the house. That will be the point when the public will know if its voice has been heard and what changes, if any, have been made. Until then, all committee actions behind closed doors must stay ‘in committee’.

Federated Farmers noted: “The government did not seem to have thought deeply about implications for these rural water suppliers until last December when it belatedly set up a Rural Water Supplies Working Group.” National board member and local government spokesperson Sandra Faulkner told the select committee: “Many farmers, as significant ratepayers and strongly rooted in their local communities, still care deeply about our councils and what they see as an attack on local democracy.”

The Three Waters reforms are pressing forward in the select committee process despite a huge numbers of submissions against the bill.

Ownership is a significant issue for many submitters. The Feds’ submission offered a view on this and some alternatives. “We are disappointed the government did not do more to consider alternatives, such as the status quo with a voluntary shared service approach (councils encouraged to set up jointly owned council-owned organisations) and the establishment of 16 WSEs (using current regional and unitary council boundaries). We oppose

Recently Federated Farmers submitted to the select committee arguing that the bill is so flawed it should not even leave the select committee and proceed to the second reading. It commented that while many farmers are self-suppliers, numerous communities have mixeduse water supplies involving residential, farmhouse, irrigation and livestock supply.

“The submission delivers a damning analysis of the overlap of proposed governance structures, lack of access to information by the public to scrutinise the proposed Water Entities, a lack of performance measures and a lack of integration with other reforms and local planning.”

The political positions of the two main parties are clear and diverge. Labour has not rescinded or paused the select committee process and so is progressing forward. National has stated it is opposed to the bill and will rescind it if privileged to be in government next year. At this point, then there is a clear choice.

moving to four geographically huge and diverse WSEs”

The Office of the Auditor-General also delivered a scathing indictment of the government’s Three Waters reforms. In its submission to the select committee, it says the proposed Three Waters changes will result in ‘a serious diminution in accountability to the public for a critical service’ and ‘no proposed audit scrutiny’.

Fonterra and the Rural Support Trust have announced a three-year partnership to support rural New Zealanders by improving access to wellbeing and resilience services for farming families who are doing it tough.

“Farming is an animal and produce business, but it’s also very much a human business. It’s right to show up for communities during events and emergencies, but the partnership also recognises an ongoing need for support of, and commitment to, New Zealand communities.”

Experienced, effective Councillor. High attendance. I speak out and ask the hard questions. Sensible spending is crucial, with vision for the future. Intelligent budget allocation is essential. The health and safety of our people is critical. Our infrastructure, (roads, footpaths, drinking water and waste water), must be maintained and improved to ensure this. Including seal extensions and dust mitigation. I am opposed to the 3 waters changes (asset grab) and have voted accordingly.

Earning a living from the land comes with a unique set of challenges. Research shows that a significant proportion of New Zealand farmers neglect their own wellbeing. The first priority for the partnership is to develop a rural-specific national strategy, which is expected to be in place early next year.

he Kaipara Moana Remediation Programme is one of the most intensive afforestation efforts globally. It’s one of New Zealand’s largest catchment restoration programmes, investing $4.67 million last year in projects to reduce sediment flowing into the Kaipara Harbour. The Ministry for the Environment, Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua, Te Uri o Hau, Northland Regional Council and Auckland Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish Kaipara Moana Remediation in October 2020.

Wenzl and Helen acknowledge that Kaipara is a delicate piece of the environment, and KMR has certainly changed their thinking about farming.

“I would encourage farmers to take advantage of it. It is free money, and you are leaving something for the next generation. I think 99 per cent of farmers want to do right by the environment. We struggle to make money at times, and it is another cost to do planting but when half of it is paid for — it makes sense to jump on board.

“KMR has a target to have more than 500,000 native plants in the ground and a further 250km of fencing completed within the 2022–2023 financial year. Millions of local native plants are being grown in 17 accredited nurseries across Kaipara in preparation for the 2023 planting season and beyond.”

“The first time AberLasting was planted, I was driving down the farm lane and saw that the original pasture

mix was dried off on one side, while the AberLasting paddocks were still white with clover on the other, and both were grazed at the same time,” says Gavin.

“In trials, AberLasting maintained its leaf water content for a week longer than traditional white clover.”

“Paddocks with AberLasting grew another two weeks into the dry.”

Otago farmer, Gavin Nichol, uses AberLasting in his farm’s permanent pasture mix to increase tolerance to weather extremes and boost pasture production for his 6,500 ewes and 300 cows.

a top reputation, Karl has gathered around him a highly experienced team who know drainage, and take pride in keeping up to date with the latest technology in the industry. It also makes them versatile. As well as creating healthier pastures and orchards, Karl and the team can also take care of contract work, from driveway maintenance to house excavation, trenching, haulage and more.

In fact, there’s so much more to Driver Laser Drainage, it would be hard to fit it all on one sign. You’ll often find Karl and the crew working in orchards, digging down to help create the foundations for new builds, or deploying a ‘mole plough’ to send cables and pipes through the soil.

Your versatile local drainage experts

With heavy machinery and trucks comes the ability to haul big loads, and while there’s often plenty for Driver Laser Drainage to achieve underground, they can deliver all sorts of things for up top as well; fertiliser for pasture and crops, hay and livestock feed, and gravel for finishing off well-drained driveways and construction jobs.

The ‘laser’ part of Karl’s company name refers to the precision-guided nature of the equipment he deploys in the field. The big chain trenchers, the 11-tonne excavator and a fleet of trucks cut big jobs down to size. However, it’s the people who have built a good reputation for Driver Laser Drainage across the mid-north. With a variety of skills on offer and a fleet of machines to back them up, versatility is a core strength of Karl’s enterprise.

With spring kicking in, thoughts will turn toward outdoor living spaces and a plan to build that long-overdue deck and buy the furniture to match.

If your furniture retailer is responsible, the wood the products are made from will carry a sustainable forest certification label, especially in the case of outdoor furniture. While it’s a great idea to have attractive wood tables and chairs, check before you buy that a sustainable wood certification label comes with the product you want to purchase. If there isn’t a label on the product, then check with the retailer where it was originally sourced from.

Keeping it sustainable

Fijian kauri is considered a fastgrowing timber species. Still, according to a study by the Vanuatu Environmental Science Society, this tropical tree is now under threat. There are legal and sustainable logging operations globally that comply with international

Ministry of Primary Industries website, tropical hardwood timber has the highest chance of being illegally or unsustainably logged. You can also check if the retailer is a member of the New Zealand Imported Timber Trade Group. Its members are importers and retailers that aim to only import and sell sustainable timber products.

The same applies to decking timber. Always check with your local timber merchant where that particular tropical timber species has been sourced. All good timber retailers can provide advice and information on where their imported wood has been supplied from.

Tropical timber comes from regions such as Africa, Indonesia, South America and the Pacific Islands. Balau is a dense hardwood native to the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Kwila is sourced from the Indonesianruled areas of New Guinea. Recently, issues have been raised regarding illegal logging surrounding this particular hardwood species.

Tropical hardwood can make attractive decking or outdoor furniture — check for sourcing before you buy

Most decks and outdoor furniture use H3 or H4 treated radiata pine. However, other timber can be used, including eucalyptus, macrocarpa and tropical hardwoods such as kwila, balau and, more rarely, Fijian kauri. Alternative timbers can be attractive and durable. Still, before you jump into the vehicle and go off to the local hardware store to get your timber or outdoor furniture made from tropical hardwood, consider where it came from first.

It is recommended to have your system pumped out at least every three years to remove sludge and sediment. Fitting a septic tank outlet filter helps to prevent solids from entering the disposal field if you have one.

Keeping septics healthy

Living remotely, means you need to rely on septic tanks to manage wastewater — therefore, it is important to maintain your tank properly. Wastewater is the water we have used in our houses, whether the kitchen, laundry, bathroom or toilet — it all goes down the drains into the septic.

The liquid fertiliser contains worm eggs. When, they are washed out of the system, they hatch and the worms live in the disposal areas scouring and aerating the soil. Even heavy clays will be opened up 100mm vertically and 50mm on each size a year by the worms and microbes.

The type of soil of the land

A little bit of lawn love

It’s been a wet winter, but spring has nally sprung, and it’s time to prepare your lawns for the grass-growing season.

De nitely consider a ride-on if your lawn is more than 1,000sqm. Still, lots of people use them on much smaller lawns too. They can take up less room than a dingy, they’re great for anyone with mobility issues, save time and let’s face it — they’re a heap of fun too.

You should also get your mower serviced, having the oil, lter and plugs changed and your blades sharpened up. It’s worth doing this as soon as possible, as the servicing turnaround time tends to get longer during the spring and summer months.

To get started, clear your lawns of any branches and debris and then aerate the soil. That is especially important in areas such as Millwater where the ground can get a bit boggy. Ideally, aerating should be done just before spring, so if you haven’t done it already, do it yesterday.

If you want more advice on getting ready for the grass-growing season, pop in and see the team at Gatmans. They’ll be happy to help.

Ben’s midget car carries the names of many local sponsors, including First National’s Gary Morris, Armour Financial Services, KP Tanks, the Promo Lab and Skipps Logging. BNT Automotive, JJ Fabrication and Kaiwaka Motorcycles are a huge help, too, providing the skills and service to keep the Suzuki GSXR engined racer in full fettle.

Ben Morrison is only at the start of his racing career, but he’s racked up first-place victories even a veteran would be proud of

Taking first place in a 30-driver championship and scoring the most firstplace finishes has put Ben at the top of his game, racing custom-built dirt track midget cars out of Western Springs’ iconic speedway.

“We had a really good season, especially considering Covid lockdowns coming halfway through,” says Ben. “Many tracks decided to run longer, into winter, but we got pretty lucky with the weather and had no rain-outs all season.”

Young Maungatūroto racing driver Ben Morrison was feted for his stellar rookie season in midget cars, but if anything, his more recent exploits on the track have been even more remarkable.

“I’m on the lookout for the next step up to the next class of midget cars,” says Ben. “The cars we race now use 750cc motorbike engines, and we keep them on the redline, above 11,000 rpm, for the whole race. The next level uses custom-made engines and can cost $120,000 each.”

After showing the competition his exhaust pipes for another successful season, Ben says he’ll keep his skills sharp during winter with go-karting. However, his mind is on the premiere arena for his sport, racing midget cars in the United States. With local support, a winning attitude, and a string of victories to his name, Ben and his sponsors predict another good year in 2023.

Top mach for the electric horse

The biggest blessing comes from the original Mustang’s godfather. Shelby made the most legendary versions of the petrol-powered pony car. At this year’s SEMA event in Las Vegas they unveiled a Mach E in full Shelby tune, wearing

the critics drove it, and were“Theimpressed.Mach-Eis one of the most exciting vehicles Ford has ever introduced, and it will be amazing on New Zealand roads,”

said Ford New Zealand managing director. Simon Rutherford. He wasn’t joking. With one horse on the grille and a whopping 382 driving all four wheels at once, the Mach E has the get-up and go to rival its V8 cousin. Purists may sniff at the lack of animalistic petrol roar and tyre smoke. Still, if the pure metrics of acceleration, speed and handling are all that matters, then the electric pony car delivers the goods. Despite the high driving position, many test drivers and critics have said that you still get that muscle-car feel, looking out over a long and sculpted bonnet and feeling a wave of torque.Thereare nods to the original classic Mustang in the styling of the Mach E and some clever new technology. The old pony car could never suggest the best local cafes using voice activation, and the panoramic roof of the Mach E mimics the wide-open sky feel of a convertible without the hassles. Iconic touches like three-bar tail lights and a dual-cowl grille hint at the lineage behind the name.

the classic white and blue livery of the brand. With their vote of confidence, those who say the Mach E is ‘not a real Mustang’ may well be silenced. If not, Ford challenges them to take a test drive and try to disagree with the future.

Early next year, we are likely to see the first Mach E Mustangs on the road here in New Zealand

Ford’s electric Mustang, the Mach E, is coming to New Zealand very soon, with teaser advertising raising the curtain on a bold new direction for the brand.

The initial release of the Mach E was polarising for fans of Ford and of muscle cars in general. The original Mustang remains the best-selling sports car marque of all time and has a place in the hearts of staunch petrolheads. Even fans of General Motors’ rival machines will sometimes admit to a grudging respect for the longevity and style of the Mustang. So, turning an aggressive-looking, growling five-litre V8 coupe into an allelectric SUV while keeping the symbol of the galloping horse was seen as edgy indeed. Some opined that the use of the Mustang badge was all wrong. That perhaps the new offering from Ford’s engineers and designers should have been labelled a Bronco or even a Lincoln Navigator, the company’s halo-level luxury SUV. Comparisons were made to Tesla’s ModelThenX.

“Heavy transport emissions are notoriously hard to offset, as electric battery vehicle alternatives can’t offer companies the same productivity,” says Hyundai New Zealand’s Andy Sinclair. “Larger trucks are driven all day, every day, over long distances. Taking multiple hours to recharge a battery regularly is time the truck can’t be on the road.”

Hydrogen fuel is now being created in New Zealand, breaking the need to import it for heavy transport applications. A facility near Mōkai in the Taupō region is now online and manufactured for the privateKnownmarket.as

Halcyon, the hydrogen venture is a joint one, split half and half between the Tūaropaki Trust and the Obayashi Corporation of Japan. It was opened in December last year and is now turning renewable electricity into transport-fuel grade hydrogen.

This expansion of the supply and production network for hydrogen is important for rural contractors because hydrogen is being touted as the replacement for diesel, just as electricity is put forward as the future fuel for passenger cars. Hydrogen tractors have already been built overseas, with New Holland leading the charge. Hydrogen buses are already on Auckland routes. When production is ramped up, the fuel will provide a zero-emission alternative to diesel, not just in the ploughed field but on the road between jobs.

“Seeing this vision come to life is particularly poignant for me as the thirdgeneration owner of Waitomo, given Waitomo celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. What a way to cement in the transition to a low-emissions fuel future for the fourth generation,” said Waitomo Group managing director Jimmy Ormsby at the opening of the Palmerston North site.

Hyundai’s XCIENT truck debut, Waitomo’s move to establish hydrogen stations, and Halcyon’s hydrogen production plant point the way to a diesel-free future in rural New Zealand

The first hydrogen-powered trucks have landed on Kiwi shores, in the form of Hyundai’s XCIENT range, already in operation with NZ Post. Heavy haulage is a big part of rural contracting, from lime and fertiliser to gravel and big agricultural machinery. Hydrogen power will undoubtedly be a game-changer, reducing emissions and fuel bills in years to come.

Meanwhile, the option to fuel up with the most abundant element in the universe is on track in rural New Zealand, too. Waitomo Fuels has plans to expand its hydrogen network, racing ahead of other foreign-owned competitors and breaking ground on a hydrogen fuelling station last May.
