December 2021 THE SUMMER LIFESTYLER

Message from the mayor Welcome to what promises to be a summer here in Kaipara like no other. After months where the rest of New Zealand has had restricted access to Northland and Kaipara District, the strict border controls have come down, and vaccinated visitors are allowed to join us again. Visitors are in for some nice surprises, as across Kaipara, there’s plenty of recent progress to see, like the major roadworks for shared paths and roundabouts in Mangawhai to keep people safe and traffic moving, or the new pontoon and upgraded wharf at Pahi. Kaipara’s wide-open spaces between our two oceans and two harbours are the big drawcard for people looking to get away from the crowds, and I reckon they’re just the antidote for these times. Find your own new quiet place in which to relax and pause while the world turns. Kaipara’s good for that and much more. Enjoy. Kaipara Mayor, Dr Jason Smith ¢

Festive greetings and a warm welcome from Integrity Community Media to this special Kaipara Lifestyler edition — the Summer Lifestyler. As we head into the holidays, my wife Pat and I would like to thank our readers, our advertisers and community, and last but by no means least, our amazing team. Without our strong team, we would not be able to bring you our community newspapers and our rural publications to letterboxes 2.4 million times a year. Holiday time has now arrived after a rather tumultuous year for us all. It has been a year of incredible highs and lows, Covid has presented us with challenges, but we have overcome them as a company and together as a community. The Kaipara Lifestyler remains our flagship regional weekly newspaper, helping bring together our readers, businesses and community with local stories. For 2022 we want to bring you more of the stories which matter to you, and we’ll be very pleased to hear from you if you have news to share. We are also proud to deliver our east coast weekly newspaper, The Weekend Lifestyler. Moreover, because of amazing support from the east coast, we decided this year to shift distribution to that area. Of course, we also share this content with everyone online each week, along with the Kaipara Lifestyler for those who like to view their local news in a digital format. Community newspapers play an integral part in keeping people informed in an age often overloaded by digital

and social media. These new formats sometimes come with a penchant for disinformation. We believe it is important to be able to sit back at leisure and be reliably informed in print and entertained at a pleasant and relaxed level. The Kaipara region has made good progress with growth continuing across all of our communities and increased investment, which has seen important infrastructure improvements, including the $5 million Kaipara Wharves project and the $300 million programme to restore the health of the huge harbour to mention just two. In fact, opportunities abound in our district. Today, Integrity Community Media is a major employer with 27 staff and a stable of publications, including five successful monthly farming newspapers across the North Island. Integral to this has been the huge support we have received from our advertisers and readers. It just shows that Kaipara has the climate for businesses to succeed while providing an amazing lifestyle. We extend a warm welcome to our friends from Auckland after their long lockdown as well as visitors from across New Zealand. From all of the team here, we wish you and your family a safe festive season and a happy holiday. We will see you all in 2022. ¢

A new land was found u by Paul Campbell

Before the arrival of the Polynesian canoes bringing the first wave of New Zealand settlers 1,000 years ago, Kaipara was a land of giant kauri trees loud with birdsong and nary the sound of an axe ringing in the bush. Then came the Māori, and the first explorer to reach New Zealand was Kupe. Using the stars and ocean currents, he ventured across the Pacific from his ancestral Polynesian homeland of Hawaiki. It is thought he made landfall just to the north of Kaipara at the Hokianga harbour. His skill and those of subsequent arrivals led them to Aotearoa, The Land of the Long White Cloud.

In the early 19th century, came the tall ships of European explorers, followed swiftly by seal hunters, whalers, traders and an assortment of adventurers. In the mid-1860s, came a wave of European settlers. The Auckland Provincial Government offered assisted passages to immigrants from England and wider Europe. The northern Kaipara Harbour was selected for settlement with a man offered 40

acres of land with a further 40 for his wife and 20 acres for each member of his family between the ages of 5 and 18. In May 1862, the first party of what became known as Albertlanders set sail from the East India Docks in London. After some 100 days at sea, the immigrants were sent off to their place of settlement on the Kaipara. However, the fanciful maps they were given showed wide roads from Auckland to Kaipara that were non-existent. As a result, expensive wagon wheels many had strapped to the ship rails were sold and more practical goods bought, such as axes and shovels, to make their own

way on to their land grants. They then made the journey by smaller craft up the east coast to Mangawhai, then a harbour landing and today a bustling town. From there, it was a slow and arduous journey over bush-covered land to Kaiwaka and on by tidal waterway to Port Albert. In the ensuing years, more migrants fanned out to claim land in and around the emerging settlements of Maungaturoto, Whakapirau, Pahi, Paparoa, Matakohe and on to Ruawai and Dargaville. An area of 70,000 acres of land was settled by the Albertlanders, and Kaipara is today home to these towns

with many surrounding farms still in the hands of those original families. Port Albert, once seen as a provincial capital city, again with optimistic maps showing extensive subdivisions, was replaced with the town of Wellsford to then grow with the advent of the railway and arterial roads. The other main route to the Kaipara was by way of the west coast of the harbour, via Helensville, then a timber milling town supplied from the huge Northland kauri forest.

It was the route of the Smith family, still resident in the Matakohe area today, and with founding connections to the iconic Kauri Museum. The Smith matriarch was the first European woman to step ashore at Matakohe that afternoon in November 1862. The family went into farming and kauri milling. Land grants were made as surveyors completed their tasks, and many settlers lived in makeshift camps when they first landed ashore.

December 2021 THE SUMMER LIFESTYLER

A special place to live u by Paul Campbell

Our Kaipara district is a special place. Its attractions are many in the towns that traverse the twin coasts that offer goods and services along with health education, social, sporting and cultural facilities to compete with the best the region as a whole has to offer. While the area was settled by European immigrants in the 19th century, today Kaipara is a magnet for new arrivals from many lands seeking a quality of life perhaps denied to them in the greater urban areas. Mangawhai on the east coast has attracted both permanent settlement and holiday homes. It has a rapidly growing real estate market and a social and cultural centre supported by extensive facilities, the Mangawhai Activity Zone and a museum among them. Of course, the beach at Mangawhai Heads is a great summer destination. Our oldest ‘citizen’ though is Te Matua Ngahere, the dignified 2,000-year-old

kauri that sits prominently in Waipoua forest, has many stories to tell, as does the iconic Tāne Mahuta the Lord of the Forest, on the must do list for any visitor and new resident. Agriculture, forestry and horticulture form the basis of our economy. We are the kūmara, the sweet potato, capital of the world. Light industry, too offers local employment opportunities, We have excellent schools ranging from primary to secondary across our towns. On the cultural side, we have one of the finest museum displays in the world — internationally renowned is The Kauri Museum at Matakohe. If you are interested in a piece of broader and

About Vega

About Vega p Market days and holiday celebrations bring out the crowds, in a region where people have more sunshine hours to enjoy the outdoor life

homestays and excellent camping facilities, either tenting caravaning or in motor homes. Safety on holiday is always a consideration. The visitor can be assured that state of the art coverage is available with medical facilities, and of course, our rescue helicopters and dedicated St John and Coastguard services are always on alert. Let's not overlook the mighty Kaipara Harbour, where development has stepped up with the construction of upgraded wharf facilities under the Kaipara District Council's development plan.

Newly completed are pontoon facilities at Dargaville and at the harbourside settlement of Pahi. The $5 million overall programme will culminate in a new wharf under construction next year at Poutō on the north head of the harbour. Indeed, the harbour itself is the centrepiece of a major remedial project. With more than 6,000 square kilometres of catchment and 950 kilometres or more of coastline at high tide, it is also a globally important ecosystem, as the largest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest internationally.

Cruising through the Kaipara

u by Andy Bryenton

There are few places on earth better for a summer road trip. Whether you choose to go east and enjoy the coast road from Mangawhai through to Waipū or head west to see the sights of the Kauri Coast, there’s so much to appreciate. Enjoy the scenery. The majority of the Kaipara’s roadways, even the state highways, are two-lane blacktop, with very few passing lanes. Opportunities to pass safely can be far between, so it’s best to take it easy and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. You’ll often find that there are stopping areas where the views are exceptional, perfect for a photo opportunity. Get supplied. It can be a long way between petrol stations when you get out into the rural hinterland. So, if you’re headed for a remote fishing spot or campground, remember to fill up and not chance it. Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Ruawai and Dargaville all have places to refuel. Those headed north via the Waipoua Forest have a chance to fuel up at Kaihū before the long and winding road to Tāne Mahuta and Hokianga. Expect different surfaces. As well as conventional roads, the Kaipara district possesses the largest network of unpaved roads in New Zealand, some of

which are on the way to the most scenic spots. Take it easy on the gravel, even if you’re piloting a 4x4. If you see a sign saying ‘council maintenance ends’ and advising off-roaders only, this usually means serious, knobbly tyred farm trucks. However, this kind of signage is usually well off the beaten track and only encountered by keen anglers, hunters and hikers heading for the backcountry. It’s also possible to drive on the Ripiro Coast beaches, but not with a conventional road car. Stick to the hard sand and stay off the dunes, where seabirds nest. Break for refreshments. While Kaipara boasts absolutely zero drivethrough fast food establishments, we’re pleased to offer some classic roadside dining. Every one of our small towns around the harbour boasts excellent espresso coffee at local cafes, and most also bake their own sweet treats too. You’ll find old-style Kiwi dairies with scoop ice cream by the cone. The debate still rages about which

Aboard were settler families who would trek overland to Port Albert on the Kaipara Harbour after making landfall. Local legend has it that the Albertland settlers, having moved inland from Port Albert to found a new town, wanted a name that sounded quintessentially British but reflected the character of their pioneering party. The name Wellsford was chosen, not because of any real ford across an actual river Wells, but because of the names of the prominent settler families. Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble lent a letter each to the name. Shaz and Dale Austin pride themselves on bringing their family recipes to communities across Kaipara through their Surfs Up Burger and Grill food truck. “Dale had a workplace accident, which means he can’t work for the rest of his life,” says Shaz. “I realised I needed a job to bring home the bacon for our family. Previously, I was involved in Bad Momma’s food truck, and it has closed down, but the food truck thing is what makes me happy.” Dale and Shaz made the decision to open another food venture, and Surfs Up was born. “This time, it is just me and my family, and we can work around Dale and our children. The business represents us as a family and what we are about the surf, which is family, the sea and food. “We have created our own vibe, and it suits us. The venture has been a natural progression, and things have fallen into place for us. “I park at the Mangawhai Domain on Mondays and Waipū on Thursdays. I go to Maungaturoto every Friday and Kaiwaka on Sundays at Jaques Four Square. “We do lunches now and then and also go to events and provide catering for private functions. “My ribs are very popular, but there is something about our fried chicken that people really love. “I am Fijian, and Dale is South African, and the rib sauce is a mix of ingredients

The secret is using buttermilk, and we use big chicken pieces that come out crunchy and juicy inside.” Garlic butter prawns, burgers and grilled chicken are also on the menu.

Mangawhai was once a sleepy seaside town, frequented by a select few summer holidaymakers and year-round residents who knew about its natural charm. Now, the secret is out, and this fast-growing town is a popular summer destination. MAUNGATUROTO

Hard work greeted settlers u by Paul Campbell

Back in 1863, there were just a handful of families that stepped ashore at the headwaters of the Otamatea River, not far from today’s Fonterra milk processing plant, to be greeted by tangled scrubby bush and the odd tall tree and not much else. Even to secure their smallholdings, as they were not all members of the Albertland scheme to whom land grants had been allocated before they sailed from London, their key to the eventual settlement of this gateway community westwards to the Kaipara was kicked off with land allocations and sales at the Kaiwaka store Kaipara’s introduction settlement on State Highway One. Those first settlers planted corn and pumpkin to kick off horticulture as they gradually cleared the land and bought in the first few sheep and cattle. Today their efforts are amply demonstrated in the rich farmlands surrounding the town. Those early settlers’ names are recorded both on street signs. There are still old homesteads to discover, and there are cottages that were constructed from a single felled kauri tree. Kauri formed the backbone of early industry in the region. Many a man headed off to dig kauri gum that put food on the table in leaner times, with agents buying the gum dug from long-ago trees in swamps and gullies. The Kaipara Harbour was the highway of early trade. Roads were only dug by sheer manpower. For some early settlers, it was almost a tragedy when they rowed

Rally returns to Kaipara’s special stage u by Andy Bryenton

One of the most picturesque rally stages in the world is tucked away in the farmlands between Maungaturoto and Paparoa. This year, the Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club and the Paparoa Lions will join forces as racing roars back to the region. “Life hopefully has started to return to some normality, and that means we can now get down to what we really enjoy doing, and that’s having some skids,” Northern Rally Sprint Series spokesperson Steve Russell said. The NRSS administers the fast-paced Northern Rally Sprint Series, a longstanding competition that regularly

staged one of its many annual rounds on Arcadia Road in the hilly hinterland of northern Kaipara. While NRSS officials sort out the rules and crown the victors of each stage, the Arcadia Road event is hosted by the Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club. “It’s great to be back,” said HCMC president Kieran Cornelius. “This event is not only a very well-anticipated first round to the 2022 season, it’s also good to be back in Paparoa. Long ago the cars of the New Zealand rally used to park up on the Paparoa Showgrounds as they passed through, and now we do.” Kieran has served as medical officer for the Arcadia Road rally sprint before, and as club president, he’s enmeshed in administration too. After a break due to Covid-19 restrictions, he says that there are two big reasons he’s keen to return to the twists, turns, gravel and eyepopping scenery of the Kaipara stage. “We’re really looking forward to getting back to Paparoa and helping the local Lions Club with their fundraising,” he says. Kieran was alluding to a strong bond between the motor racing fraternity and the charitable organisation. “This time around, I’m also hoping to have my own car sorted, and to compete as well!”

p Icons of rally history and modern off-road monster machines will converge on a twisty stretch of gravel between Maungaturoto and Paparoa early in 2022

Previous years have seen some memorable action, as cars from the classic era of rallying, such as Ford Escorts and modified Fiestas share the limelight with today’s modern rally weapons like the Skoda Fabia RS. Custom monsters like Bevan Wilson’s home-built triple-rotary engined, fourwheel-drive BMW also put on a show as they navigate the twisting, unpaved

roads, especially closed for the event by the auspices of the Kaipara District Council. Rally racers are practising hard now for the big day in February 2022. The organisers are working extremely hard to accommodate what could be up to 50 teams and their machines, hundreds of spectators and a triumphant return to Kaipara for rally sports. ¢

The harbour and the heartland u by Andy Bryenton

Follow the road from the Brynderwyn turnoff and into the town of Maungaturoto, and you’ll find many ways to explore the picturesque Kaipara Harbour. This countryside was settled by the Albertlanders, a group of people who left Britain to establish a new home during the Victorian era. Their influence can be seen in the many small but characterful towns dotting the upper harbour. Maungaturoto township is only a short distance from the scenic Piroa Falls, well worth the short drive and 200-metre walk across a footbridge built by Maungaturoto’s Rotary Club. The town itself features a historic inn with a bizarre true story attached, as well as the northernmost wharf on the harbour. Drive out from here and take the turnoff to Whakapirau to visit the first of many charming harbourside settlements along the way. Paparoa, the village in the valley, comes up next as you travel along State highway 12. This town was once a thriving trade centre, as evidenced by its old historic bank building, where the tellers once practised their pistol shooting to ward off robbers, and gumdiggers traded their amber gold for currency. Paparoa is well known for its popular Saturday market days when farm

You’ll find a classic old Kiwi tavern, and the turnoff to the seaside gem Pahi, famed for its fishing as the gateway to the harbour for anglers. Matakohe, with its rich heritage, is next along the road. This town boasts a heritage rose garden of note, two historic churches, and Kaipara’s most

famous museum, The Kauri Museum. This showcase of the era of tall timber, gumdiggers, bush camps and fortunes made and lost is a must-see for visitors. A winding, scenic road leads from Matakohe down to the harbourside village of Tinopai, yet another renowned fishing spot and a haven for boaties. EDUCATION

Learning for a strong foundation u by Paul Campbell

Education is the foundation strength of any community, and Kaipara schools are second to none, given the academic umbrella provided by the Ministry of Education, which provides the benchmark in New Zealand. With three excellent secondary schools, Otamatea High School in Maungaturoto, Ruawai College and Dargaville High School, some two dozen rural and community intermediate and primary schools begin the learning base. Our education system reflects a unique and diverse society that welcomes different abilities, religious beliefs, ethnic groups, income levels and ideas about teaching and learning across three levels. These are early childhood education from birth to school entry age, primary and secondary education from 5–19 years of age and further higher and vocational education. Most pupils go to a school close to where they live. Many in the major urban areas have zoning rules that don’t follow in Kaipara, where the population is scattered. The school bus is a familiar sight on local roads twice each day as they ferry learners across the district from villages and farms. With the country atmosphere comes additional benefits, with rural children enjoying such extras as pet days, where beribboned lambs and calves might gather in the school playground

to reflect the rural lifestyles families enjoy. Kaipara has a good emphasis on sport and recreation along with the standard lessons. Interschool contests are frequent, adding to the social life of pupils from many different backgrounds. Most schools in New Zealand are owned and funded by the state and teach the national curriculum, and are secular. There are a few non-state schools in Kaipara catering to and reflecting their particular values set within a specific philosophy or religion. Also on offer in Kaipara secondary schools are innovative programmes, such as Dargaville High’s initiative to support the transition of Year 13 students into a career in the New Zealand Police. It aims to give students real-world knowledge, constructive attributes and positive attitudes and the opportunity to explore physical and leadership requirements. A variety of similar nonstandard opportunities are offered at college level elsewhere. For the present, though, it’s holiday time with most schools starting the 2022 year at the end of January. ¢

TOP TEN WATER SAVING TIPS

Kia ora Kaipara visitors, welcome to our beautiful district Northland and Kaipara can suffer from pretty severe droughts, particularly in these summer months. Check out these water-saving tips to help our households conserve water. Before your visitors arrive it’s a good idea to: •

Check for leaks and dripping taps. This could also be in your outside areas – check for patches of green grass on your lawn, or sinks that are wet first thing in the morning.

Mulch your garden. Mulching can prevent up to 70% of water loss through evaporation.

Put a 4min timer in the shower to help your guests time their showers. Buy a kitchen timer or ask your guests to set a stopwatch on their phone.

If you’re on a water tank – check your tanks are full and you have a water delivery booked ahead of time.

Use the half-flush system on your toilet, or reduce the flush-water quantity by displacing water in the cistern with a part-filled bottle or a brick.

Tips for visitors:

More tips and water levels for your local area can be found at bewaterwise.org.nz

Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, washing your hands, or shaving.

Take fewer, shorter showers. Get yourself wet then turn off the tap to soap up, and turn it back on to rinse off.

Put a bucket in your shower to catch water. You can use this for your gardens, indoor plants, and to clean your car or boat (depending on restriction levels, hoses, sprinklers and waterblasters etc are banned during summer).

Flush the toilet less often.

Store a bottle of drinking water in the fridge to help avoid running more water than you need if you like drinking cold water.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season from Kaipara District Council.

PENNY’S NORTHLAND REGIONAL COUNCIL UPDATES BY PENNY SMART NRC COUNCILLOR FOR KAIPARA WARD

Kia ora koutou 2021 the year that was

As the NRC Councillor representing Kaipara and NRC Chair there have been many successes for the Council despite the hugely disruptive Covid19 affect this year. I would like to acknowledge the stress and uncertainty that all parts of the community have experienced over the past 1-2 years of Covid19. While it is not yet over for us all here in Northland and New Zealand it is my hope that with the vaccination choices that are available, we can remain safer from the virus and have businesses able to operate at levels they can remain profitable in. We have all worked together well thus far and it would be a real shame to loose the perspective that we are all in this together as a team of 5 million. Thanks to NRC staff and all in Kaipara for supporting NRC’s Environmental work The environmental work which under pins all that NRC does has remained focused on collaboration and enablement, restoration and enhancement, monitoring and observing changes, resilience building and protection. NRC staff have worked above and beyond to achieve the goals and outcomes set out in both the previous and current 2021-2031 NRC Long Term Plan, Te Mahere Roa. A healthy environment is one of three focus areas of NRC, the other two being a strong economy and resilient communities. NRC’s environmental work is achieved with huge support and in collaboration with our large army of community based environmental volunteers, Tangata Whenua, Central Government and Agencies. It is the backbone of what NRC does and is vitally important if we want to see Te Taitokerau Thrive for generations to come. I would like to say a huge thank you to all who have supported, assisted and done the mahi in 2021. The work of NRC and collaboration opportunities are all available on the NRC website. www.nrc.govt.nz Examples of some of NRC’s 2021 successes include 130 completed soil conservation plans, 16 more wetlands enhanced and protected, 5750 poplar trees supplied from the NRC nursery, 123 Collaborative Community Engagement Groups that are active, 5731ha of additional land added to growing list of Community Pest Control areas and 14,779 plants provided through the Coast Care Program. Kaipara Moana Remediation project surging ahead Setting up the Kaipara Maurikura Business Unit for our KMR project. Which will see the restoration of the Kaipara Harbour and the

setting of a template and precedent for our other Te Taitokerau Harbours. The project now has a Pou Takaki or Project Lead close to 16 permanent staff and offices within the Whangarei NRC building (temporary). The Year Two work is underway, and landowners within the Kaipara Catchment are encouraged to complete an Expression of Interest for fencing and planting for the 2022 planting season. KMR has a website for further information. www.kmr.org.nz The NRC Strategy for Climate Change - Nga Taumata o te Moana Nga Taumata o te Moana means ‘think strategically and maintain a global outlook, whilst appreciating the ground on which you stand’. The strategy has three Themes or Pou; Adapt, Reduce and Remove With this strategy NRC acknowledges the urgent need for change and the vital role council play in addressing it. The strategy is accompanied by a detailed Implementation Plan, which sets out what NRC intend to do and when. Both documents are available on the NRC website. NRC is also leading the Te Tai Tokerau Joint Climate Change Adaptation Committee with District Councils and Tangata Whenua. This strategy while still in draft form will set the direction for a robust collaborative approach to developing adaptation responses to the impacts of Climate Change. It is expected that this strategy will be out for consultation within the first half of 2022. Joint Regional Economic Development NRC also led the forming of the Joint Regional Economic Development Committee which saw Northland Inc becoming a Council Controlled Organisation of NRC, KDC and FNDC. This move ensures there is greater alignment and services provided of economic development priorities and outcomes in Te Taitokerau. While it is still early days the group is working together very well. NRC Kaipara Service Station nearing completion The new Dargaville based NRC Kaipara services centre, which will be cohabited by NRC and KDC is on track for completion in early 2022. With the COVID-19 lockdown construction delays for the centre having now been fully mitigated, with local contractor’s support.

2022 the year ahead

2022 will see further change in Local Government, Governance, and Te Tai Tokerau. It will also be a year where there will be great opportunities to review, reset and renew.

The amount and impact of legislative change coming will affect us all in the way we work, live and play. RMA reform, Local Governance review, the new Freshwater Policy Statement and Standards and the Biodiversity reset will all need to be worked through thoroughly in order to get practical and workable outcomes. This is where consultation, submissions and feedback are so important. NRC as a Regional Council are very aware and prepared for taking on this role on behalf of and in collaboration with Northlands communities and Te Tiriti Partners. We cannot afford to shy away from any of what is coming if we want to sustainably provide for future generations, we can however look for ways to work collaboratively towards outcomes that see all of Te Tai Tokerau thrive. I feel very privileged to be an NRC Councillor representing Kaipara, Te Tai Tokerau Northland and thank you all for your past and future support. Hari Kirihimete, wishing you all a very safe and enjoyable summer. Please be covid safe, drive to the conditions and be responsible when on and in the water. Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakemua If we take care of the earth and take care of people, we will take care of the future It is my belief that vaccination is key to New Zealand and Northland getting to a positive new normal. Please take the opportunity to vaccinate. Disclaimer: these are my personal views and not those of NRC or NRC Councillors. ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM HOME ……

Dream homes become realities u by Andy Bryenton

While many of the Kaipara District’s visitors this summer are there for the short term, enjoying the warm climate and outdoor experiences, many others are looking for a place to call their own. The retirement dream of leaving the city and its traffic woes behind is alive and well, according to statistics, which predict an additional 5,000 residents here before mid-century. It

may even be an underestimate if the demand for housing in the Kaipara, east to west, remains as high as it is today. While the median house price in this part of the nation has just topped $900,000 for the first time, spurred by the uptake of coastal properties in places like Mangawhai, Tinopai and Baylys Beach, building consents are also at a high never seen since the 1970s. The lowest turnaround from listing to sale since 2005 also points to robust demand. Homes are, on average, only available for 35 days before finding a new owner. Notably, these statistics came in before Auckland’s border was opened. The clear message is that people are seeking their dream lifestyle in the north, where it is still affordable, and characterful land is still available with maritime and rural views. Lifestyle blocks, forested hideaways and coastal baches are all there for the finding, and bare land with stunning views is commonly seen in the real estate pages of this publication.

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM HOME ……

A garden of earthly delights u by Liz Clark

We all have a vision of how we would like our gardens to look, the views we want, the things we would like and the plants we want — we’re allowed to dream, right? Of course we are. Imagine this; you have an unlimited budget and can have anything you want. The choices are limitless. The styles make the imagination run wild, and the thought of having the garden you want is so exciting. How about an entertainer’s garden? You’ve got the house, and now you must have that outdoor venue for all those dinner and pool parties with the setting to match. You’ve got the pool setting with all the mod cons and the glass panelling to show it off. Now you need a touch of Bali to bring it all together. Balinese-style gardens use natural materials such as brushwood or bamboo panelling for screening, dark colour tones and a lot of tropical greenery. Make paths from wood or stone to take your guests through lush palms, bird of paradise, frangipani and hibiscus into a central entertainment area. Perhaps you have a small water feature planted with lotus flowers to

set it off. Of course, you’ll need four or five eye-catching pots to set it all off. Don’t forget the shade pavilion, sun loungers and finally, the fire pit — that is a must-have. If you’ve been inspired by the garden style of the classic English country garden, you can be greedy. Create winding paths using pavers, gravel or even shells to guide your visitors around the garden. Use tall plantings to provide a background setting and shelter for all the flowering plants put in to fill every possible space. Use roses, flowering annuals, hollyhocks, snapdragons, sweet peas, alyssum, lobelia and many others to bring colours that look like something out of a Beatrix Potter illustration. If you have a sloping site, create a series of garden rooms with stones for steps and perhaps an iron gate leading into each one. Enclose them in with trellis for climbing roses to tumble over, keep

some lawn and have a garden bench to sit on and have a relaxing read during the day. Everywhere, plant flowers to enjoy. You can be bold and go for an Italianate garden with grapevines on overhead providing shade during the heat of the day, citrus trees planted in large matching pots with sculptured gardens planted with lavender and other favourites — even an olive tree in the central courtyard to provide the renaissance touch. If you’re inspired, cut out images from gardening magazines for ideas and paste them into a visual diary or look online for more ideas. ¢

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM HOME ……

Green house effect u by Andy Bryenton

With the stark warning of recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change results in the headlines, many of us will be wondering what we can do as individuals to stave off environmental disaster. The answer is close to home. While we may not be able to control the transition of China or India from coal to renewables, we can do a lot more than most people expect in terms of cutting down on waste and energy loading. From the most basic to the more enterprising, here are some ways to contribute to the solution. 1. Source local. That could mean forgoing goods made in giant foreign plastics factories in economies driven by coal: simple things like switching to reusable coffee cups or wooden toothbrushes and razors. Then again, it can also include diminishing your carbon travel footprint by shopping at farmer’s

markets or sourcing only in-season local produce from supermarkets. Many of New Zealand’s farms are already carbon neutral if you count the contribution of their pasture, shelterbelts, wetlands and crops. To unlock the ultimate level of local sourcing, throw together a cheap and effective kitchen garden, or explore the possibilities of growing your own edible mushrooms. A productive vegetable garden can be landscaped to take advantage of other green initiatives, such as: 2. Greywater recovery. It means saving water from the kitchen sink, shower and bathroom basin for use

in irrigation. A simple diversion to an inexpensive tank may be all it takes to gain a new water source, one that’s off town supply, usable even in droughts. Harvesting greywater may mean the necessity of switching up some of your cleaning and personal grooming

products for eco-friendly alternatives. Still, it’s a form of recycling that pays dividends when your veggie and fruit bill begins to drop. 3. Compost and worms. Strike out a large portion of your weekly rubbish, paying less to get rid of scraps, and also

As a bonus, the heat generated around an active compost heap can nurture the roots of plants used to a warmer climate. In the north, it’s even possible to grow bananas near your compost pile. If you have limited space, construct a wooden bin for the bacteria to work in, and consider a worm farm next door to it. This is a place where compost is compacted and reduced into very fertile castings, wormproduced soil that’s great for growing things. A worm farm can be put together for as little as $30, and there are many videos online, which make it easy. 4. Chickens. They aren’t for everyone, but these popular poultry power through scraps and produce wonderful orangeyolked free-range eggs. If you have room for a coop, chicken keeping can be very rewarding. Once again, you’ll eliminate waste and save on your grocery bill. Quail is a popular alternative. However, they are less well-defended than chickens and require a coop and run with fine mesh to repel stoats and rats. These small and docile birds provide a regular supply of small, delicate eggs that are prized in gourmet cookery. 5. Landscape and design for the climate. The days of building a large

wooden box four-square to the winds and with no regard for the sun are long gone. Keeping in heat with insulation, drying the home with internal, filtered ventilation and extractor fan systems, and choosing energy-efficient heating can all help slash energy bills. Planning for a low energy impact home also helps when it’s time to take the ultimate step and remove oneself from reliance on the power grid. Solarpowered extractor fans and ventilators exist as stand-alone units, but working with an architect and landscape designer early on to capture the most sun and plant out sturdy wind-baffling foliage can work better than any technological fix. 6. In most of Northland, solar power is plentiful and free, as is the power of the wind. Major companies are planning to build solar and wind farms in many Kiwi towns right now, so it’s a good idea to copy their example on a smaller scale. The price of alternative energy sources has dropped as their durability and efficiency has increased, meaning that photovoltaic panels to power a small home can now be installed for approximately $10,000, including controller and battery infrastructure. A windmill providing 40-kilowatt hours a month can be purchased for $3,000 to augment solar’s seasonal differences. Alternatively, solar hot water heating can provide an easy to

choices. The biggest hurdle to overcome this challenge is still misinformation sown by those who have a stake in polluting technologies. By showing that it’s not a chore or a huge expense to make little changes, you’ll help convince your friends and neighbours that we can do this together. ¢

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM HOME ……

Electricity saving a real windfall u by Andy Bryenton

Off-grid solar is a reality for many rural households, but it’s not at full power all-year-round. Perhaps modern wind generators can fill in the gaps? With 17 wind farms across New Zealand boasting 490 turbines and generating six per cent of its total energy, there’s little doubt that wind power is a burgeoning industry. New farms are being planned, consented and built now. However, if you farm something other than electricity, is a windmill a good addition to your home grid? The mathematics of wind power, coupled with New Zealand’s position in the Southern Ocean, means that it’s in a good situation to get those blades spinning. Turbine output is a function of the cube of the wind speed; that means a high average wind speed equals excellent generation. Wind power, like solar, has become cheaper to install during recent years, and the battery banks that store up the wind’s energy have become more compact and reliable too.

Perhaps the best scenario for the farm or lifestyle block owner is a ‘best of both worlds’ approach. It uses photovoltaic solar energy when the sun shines and a windmill at night or during bad weather. It’s easy to see how the peaks and troughs of each system cancel each other out using this method, at least on average. In summer, the solar panels may do the heavy lifting, while in winter, with longer nights and stormy days, wind power comes to the fore. Wind power works better out in the countryside rather than in the city, where obstacles can disrupt airflow. Even in a rural setting, positioning is of utmost importance, so it’s best to consult a wind power professional when getting a system planned out. While turbines are available online for between $2,000 and $5,000 for a five-kilowatt unit, it’s noteworthy

Wind power, like solar, has become cheaper to install during recent years

p A small windmill was once a common sight on farms for pumping water; now, it’s equally likely to generate power

that due to the variable nature of the wind, they will rarely operate at peak capacity for extended periods. There’s also the question of controllers, batteries and other installation infrastructure to account for when getting a quote. For those wishing to go off the grid and forget monthly power bills, investing

in a backup for photovoltaic solar energy is a wise option. Wind can fill that gap. However, it’s very important to ensure that your home-sized turbine is robust enough to handle strong gales and can work well in harmony with other generation methods for those times of calm and quiet. ¢

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM HOME ……

Turn sunshine into water u by Andy Bryenton

A new generation of solar-powered deep-bore pumps is getting rid of the need for a generator in an old tin shed placed over far-flung wellheads. With improvements in battery and controller tech, there’s no reason why even the most out of the way water source can’t be utilised, reticulated and harnessed to help out in the dry weather when rain is not forthcoming. Here’s the scenario; you’ve located water in a deep aquifer, perfect for your lifestyle block’s small orchard to use as irrigation, to pump up to a tank for the home, or to fill a horse trough. Mains power is so far away that rigging all that wire makes the job a cost-to-benefits nightmare. In the old days, the answer was to permanently relegate an old diesel or petrol generator to duties over the wellhead, powering a submersible pump with enough juice to bring water to the surface. The grim realities of hydrodynamics and physics meant that solar power was sometimes too weak a motive force to impel good clean H2O up a bore and into the pipe, troughs and tanks. There have been changes afoot. Now, there are plenty of places online and in your local area who will sell a solarpowered submersible pump system

able to achieve a flow rate of more than 10 litres a minute at a depth of up to 85 metres. That rate will, of course, increase from a trickle to a flood if the bore is shallower. The great thing with a solar pump is that, so long as the sun rises in the morning, it will work all day, pumping with better efficiency, these days than most windmills. Photovoltaic technology has few moving parts, so as long as the panels are pointed up, the pump will continue to work with the absolute minimum of maintenance. This fairly hefty pump example, which works in any bore more than three inches, takes only a single 1,100 watt panel to keep it turning over. The attached controller will turn it off when it fills an adjacent tank, and the whole system can be augmented with a secondary panel and batteries to work all night as well. The best part is, you can control such pumps by tablet or smartphone with the right adaptors, meaning that there’s no need to ride out to the boundaries with diesel and tools to ensure a drink for the livestock. Check the level, flip the

switch and monitor flow from wherever you are. A combination of brushless motors, better photovoltaic efficiency and more compact batteries means that a complete solar pump system can

cost less than the equivalent generator and pump, considering that well drilling costs will be the same for both units. Considerably less, if you factor in a lifetime of fuel. ¢

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM HOME ……

The house that hemp built u by Andy Bryenton

Hemp fibre technology is throwing off all those tired old jokes about hippies and cannabis smokers, and shaping up as a game-changer in the building industry. Banned for decades thanks to its similarity to its infamous cousin, Cannabis sativa, the hemp plant is non-psychoactive but fast-growing and incredibly versatile. Hemp ropes made it possible for Britannia to rule the waves, and hemp paper was once close to overthrowing pulped pine products. Now making hemp into wood is a reality, and it’s shaking up the building trade. In the United States, where the Farms Code has only been altered to allow hemp cultivation since 2018, hemp wood is being used for structural timbers, flooring and even furniture. In stress tests, it’s proven to be stronger than expensive woods like oak or hickory. The price for this rapidly renewed building resource is also competitive. What about New Zealand, though? We know that America is hemp country; George Washington famously grew the stuff himself for the shipping trade.

The good news is that hemp grows well here, taking only six months to reach harvest age, as opposed to 25 years for pine trees. While both products are useful for different goals, and pine wood will always be valuable in its own right, farmers are looking closely at hemp as a cash crop that has a quick turnaround. Additionally, hemp’s rapid growth makes for a superior carboncapture feedstock. The plant also sequesters four times more carbon than a similarly sized forest. Hemp absorbs more than 20 metric tons of carbon a hectare, and its ability to be harvested biannually effectively doubles this quantity. According to GoodEarth Resources, an Australian eco-energy consultancy: ‘Industrial hemp has been scientifically proven to absorb more CO² for each hectare than any forest or commercial crop and is, therefore, the ideal carbon sink.’

the world is changing, and it’s coming to meet us

p With an advantage in terms of rapid replacement and carbon sequestration, strong, durable hemp wood may become a major component of future builds

“With all this concern about the environment and the Paris Accord on climate change, and the focus on plastics and so forth, the world is changing, and it’s coming to meet us,” said Dave Jordan of Hemp New Zealand,

when asked about the rise of this innovative material. “It’s not really fringe in terms of it being something new. It’s just something that has been rediscovered. We are restoring it to its rightful place in the economy.” ¢

A tale of two towns u by Andy Bryenton

The upper reaches of the Northern Wairoa River are a land steeped in history, from pre-European times when Tokatoka was a mighty fortified pā site, through to the early days of the kauri gum and timber boom. This year, the town of Te Kopuru turns 150, while Dargaville itself celebrates its sesquicentennial next year, having been founded in 1872. These two municipalities could not be more different in their origins, however. Te Kōpuru grew up organically, a product of its circumstances. Along with a settlement at nearby Aratapu, this town was founded on opportunity, placed at the point where the large sailing ships of the day could safely navigate upriver. Steam-powered timber mills underpinned the town. Boatbuilders soon followed, using the strong kauri wood for spars, masts and decking. Te Kōpuru boomed, and men came from around the world to make their fortune, either in the logging camps or the mills or digging gum from the soil. However, it was the wild west of New Zealand to many. A rough place for hard individuals, where fighting, drinking and other ‘immoral ways’ were tempered by

p Dargaville was a planned town, designed and established by businessman Joseph Dargaville as an alternative to the pioneering settlements that had come before

the influence of the church. Good people and honest families lived in Te Kōpuru and Aratapu, and the other Kaipara Harbour settlements, but like many colonial boom towns, rumours of danger and opportunity went hand in hand. While entrepreneurs like Sir John Logan Campbell made their fortunes by navigating around the rugged realities

of pioneer life, another immigrant businessman took a bolder step. Joseph McMullen Dargaville had worked in places where real gold fever held sway. He had been a banker in Australia and was sent by the Union Bank to the goldfields on the west coast of the South Island in 1867. When he travelled north to Northern Wairoa in 1871, he saw a situation where, as in the goldfields, natural resources had led to a population boom, but the niceties of society were yet to be established. Dargaville’s solution was a comprehensive one. He founded his own town, purchasing land from local iwi leader Parore, at the convergence of the Kaihu and Northern Wairoa rivers.

Investing heavily in his vision and in the timber trade, Dargaville built wharves, storage sheds and tramways. He donated land for a church and school but kept ownership of nearly all the rest of the township, leasing homes and businesses to only those of whom he approved. The twin towns, one grown by chance and the other by design, existed in prosperity side by side during colonial times, but it was Dargaville that rose to prominence when the kauri days died out. A visit to this part of the Kaipara gives the opportunity to delve into the history of New Zealand’s own wild west, a place where people of many cultures came together to seek their fortunes. ¢

Open road beckons for Kaipara’s gas man u by Andy Bryenton

The day starts for Joe Searle in the hour before dawn. During summer, the sun is just peeping over the horizon as he heads out to make his first deliveries. The Dargaville-based gas delivery driver gets an early start, as he usually has a lot of ground to cover. With miles of paved and unpaved road, and a sparse population settled around river and harbourside locations, the Kaipara is a large beat for any truck driver but comes with sublime scenery. “You don’t have to shift and holiday in paradise when you live here,” Joe says, pointing out his route. It spans from the Waiopua forest in the north to Poutō Point in the south and now across to the shores of Mangawhai. “I enjoy the side trips, down to places like Tinopai and Pahi, our little harbourside towns; the Tinopai road views are some of the best.” It’s not all sightseeing. Up to 20 bottles a day of gas roll out on the Gas and Tyre truck. Some go to farms to power milking shed equipment; others plug in behind bakeries and cafes where early morning preparations are underway. For private customers in town, Joe tries to time his visit for after the school run has set off. Joe started out repairing tyres, journeying out to fix anything from

“wheelbarrows to log skidders”. When prior gas delivery professional Mike Fox retired, it was time for Joe to step up to a role where he’s well known across the region. “I get to meet a lot of great people, see a lot of lovely gardens, and catch up with farmers, chefs, shop owners and all walks of life. You also sometimes get to visit places, which nobody else ever sees. “There are little areas of forest, beaches, country lifestyle blocks and even places in the middle of towns, which are slices of paradise. You get to take in the sights from a few otherwise inaccessible places, looking out at the hills or the harbour.” Joe’s deliveries power espresso machines, hot water califonts, dairy shed wash-down cylinders, and the ovens of top bakers. It means that he’s always a welcome sight, and he’s got to know many of his customers and folks along his route during his time behind the wheel. He also puts his skills and knowledge of flammable gas into civic duty as a volunteer firefighter. Knowing how

to quickly disconnect and isolate gas systems in a fire emergency is a real-life superpower, which the other volunteers appreciate greatly.

“Every day is different, from when I set out at dawn to when I come back in the afternoon and get set up for the next day’s run. It’s never boring!” ¢

Racing toward the future u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville is looking to the future, with a substantial new development planned for the land once used for the town’s horse racing club. More than 300 new homes are on the way, thanks to a unique community collaboration. It was a sad day for equestrian sports fans when the Dargaville Racing Club was told they had to close down. A rich heritage of racing and training made this rural racecourse hallowed ground for many, but a clever stipulation by the family who donated the land in

post-colonial times meant that the club was able to turn this into a bonus for the town. “Once we realised that there would never be racing here again, we were determined that this community asset should be used for something that Dargaville desperately needs and that we should do it in a way that continues to provide benefits for the community in perpetuity,” said Dargaville Racing Club president Tim Antonio. The Finlayson family, who donated the land long ago, had put it in writing; if the track could not be used for racing, it was to be used to benefit the people of Dargaville. The stage was set for a trio of organisations to build a vision for a whole new part of Dargaville. It came at just the right time. The Dargaville Racing Club, Dargaville Community Development Board and the Ngāti Whātua iwi came together just as a national housing crisis hit the headlines and the Kaipara District was confirmed as the fastest-growing region in New Zealand. Last week, a presentation about the development was made to the Kaipara District Council, following

public meetings and consultation and extensive reports from geotechnical engineers, designers, and cultural and historical consultants. A plan change is needed via the KDC to make the project a reality, and this will be deliberated next. “It’s an exciting time to be a Dargavillian,” says Dargaville Racing Club spokesperson Richard Alspach. “The impact of this development on the local township will be $3 million in employment for the next 30 years, on-

site alone. Our development partner Ngāti Whātua already has a relationship with Dargaville High School’s building academy, for example, and jobs will be created as well as qualifications. It’s a game-changer for Dargaville.” With this vision in mind, the heritage of the Dargaville races will go on, even as the land once echoing to the thunder of hooves becomes a new neighbourhood, with retirement living, family homes, and even room for light industry, parks and shops. ¢

A lifesaving contribution u by Andy Bryenton

A new rescue boat is the capstone to a great year for local surf lifesavers. Baylys Beach is a tourist hot spot, a natural treasure of the west coast, where fishing, swimming and surfing are popular pastimes for locals and visitors alike. The club has new premises at the Bill Hyland Community Centre in Baylys Beach, and last weekend dedicated a new inflatable rescue boat (IRB) donated by long-term sponsor BP petroleum. “The Baylys Beach club is opening at just the right time, with New Zealand opening up again for the holiday season,” says BP New Zealand’s Head of Country Matt Elliott. “It is a very popular Northland beach, and BP is pleased to be able to help make it safer this summer, with the donation of a new IRB for the club and local community to benefit from.” “IRBs play a vital role in rescues as they can respond very quickly and handle dangerous conditions. Since BP has partnered with Surf Life Saving New Zealand, IRBs have assisted in saving more than 22,000 lives in rescues around the country.” “We’re hugely grateful to BP for their IRB donation, which means the club will be very fortunate to have two IRBs,” says Club Captain Kyran Gillespie.

“As a new club, we don’t have the funding to purchase a second boat. Now we can carry out IRB training exercises to upskill our team while the second IRB is still available for rescues. This is an amazing gift that will help us keep the Baylys community and visitors to the beach safe.” Locals and dignitaries gathered recently to watch the blessing of

the rescue boat, and congratulate young surf lifesavers who were taking their final exams for service that same day. Dargaville BP owner Mark Simpson expressed the community’s gratitude for the spirit and dedication of the volunteers who patrol one of the wildest and unpredictable areas of coastline in the north. ¢

Natural wonders of the west u by Andy Bryenton

The west of the Kaipara is rightly known as the Kauri Coast, a place of rich history, ancient forests and wild, wide-open beaches. A visit to this part of the country would not be complete without taking in the sights and experiencing some of the natural landmarks and places of heritage that abound in the countryside and coast around Dargaville. Approaching the town from Ruawai on State Highway 12, you’ll see the shape of Tokatoka peak rising up over a bend in the Northern Wairoa River. This ancient pinnacle is the core of a long-extinct volcano. In Māori legend, it is said to have followed the great navigators in their waka from Hawaiiki, along with its brother Maungaraho, just a little

further north. Tokatoka can be climbed to the top by an accessible track, while Maungaraho becomes more technical in the upper stages. An unforgettable snapshot awaits. In Dargaville you’ll find a wealth of history, dating from kauri logging and gum digging times. Take the heritage trail along the riverside and visit spots where history unfolded, with plaques telling tales of triumph, tragedy and ingenuity. This trail ends at Dargaville’s excellent museum, home of preEuropean, maritime and natural taonga and extensive displays on the township’s

Head south from Dargaville to visit the Poutō peninsula, a slice of rolling hills and forests caught between the sea and the Kaipara Harbour. Visit Glinks Gully to access the fourwheel-drive accessible Ripiro Coast, where vast sands can be navigated to find the perfect surfcasting spot, and views ‘all the way to Australia’. Once again, this beach is accessible to 4x4s, though care must be taken around the beach entrance, where children play, locals come to ride horses, fish for kingfish and snapper, and go beachcombing. North on State Highway 14, you’ll head into the fertile Kaihū Valley, where a cycle trail is being built following in the tracks of the old kauri railway. A short detour from the highway, and well signposted, is the so-called ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Kauri Coast, the system of clear, freshwater dune lakes known as the Kai Iwi Lakes. This natural treasure was once on the border between Ngāti Whātua in the south and Ngāpuhi in the north. The coast not far from the lakes was the site of a historic battle in the musket wars of the 1800s, Moremonui, Te Kai a te Karoro, the seagull’s feast. Now a tranquil place for sunseekers and holidaymakers, the lake system boasts two camping grounds, a boat ramp and a combination of white sand and crystal blue water, drawing tourists from around the nation and the world. A cool and surf-free swim that’s safer for the children is found there, among parklike grounds with bathroom amenities and food-truck dining on the lakeside during summer. Go further north and you’ll enter kauri country proper; the upper reaches of the Kaihū Valley are home to Trounson Kauri

Park. This 586-hectare mainland island of native flora and fauna is administered by the Department of Conservation. It’s famously home not only to some of the giants among kauri trees but also to wild kiwi. By day, the loop track here is a glimpse of the untouched forests which greeted explorers 150 years ago. By night, you might hear the call of the kiwi or spot one out hunting. To the very northwestern edge of the Kaipara now we reach perhaps the most famous icon of the district. Tāne Mahuta stands head and shoulders above even the mightiest of other kauri in the Waipoua Forest. The winding road leading through this bushland habitat toward the great tree is a marvel in itself. Wind down your windows and smell forest air as you pass through a green space that’s positively prehistoric. Tāne himself is accorded the status of a person and that of a mythic Māori deity. Those who stop to visit this 45-metre tall, 15-metre wide giant will never forget the experience. Tāne Mahuta is accessed via a raised walkway to protect the immense tree’s root system and is clearly signposted from the road, where there are bathroom and refreshment facilities. Almost equally large and famous is Te Matua Ngāhere, father of the forests, with a wider trunk but less sky-scraping foliage. ¢

Heritage hits the try line u by Andy Bryenton

In 1904, sportsman, civic leader and Kaipara local Alfred Harding wrote his name into rugby history, endowing a challenge shield that carries his name. Harding was a successful sportsperson, and a political figure of note, the recipient of the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal, and a staunch supporter of rugby. The Harding Shield became a legendary prize for players of our national game and was hotly contested between the teams and clubs north of Auckland. After a hiatus of many years, the shield is back up for grabs in early 2022, with a team made up of Rodney and Northern Wairoa’s top players assembling to challenge the Bay of Islands. Not only has the trophy itself been treated to a polish up, but there’s a special connection across time as well. Harris Harding, a member of the triumphant 2021 Western Sharks team that swept all before them to win the northern championship, is ready to suit up in blue, white, black and gold as part of the team. He’s the great-greatgrandson of Alfred himself, with a direct lineage back to the shield’s founder. “It’s pretty special,” says the young athlete. “This town means quite a lot to me, and it would be great to have a

chance to represent Northern Wairoa on the field in this competition. “Going back to Alfred and that legacy; yes, I think he’d be proud to see me on the field.” Harris isn’t the only one in his family who has carried on his great-greatgrandfather’s tradition. His father, Robert, also laced up his boots to contest the Harding Shield when he was a young rugby player, and acquitted himself well. “There’s a bit of a competitive culture in our family,” admits Harris. “It’s not confined to just rugby or to any sport. We enjoy rivalry, and in this case, yes, it’s a lot of pride as well. It’s history.” Harris is by no means alone. A large team will be selected from the all-stars of both Rodney and Northern Wairoa, and three coaches will see that the players form together into a synergistic whole. There’s little doubt that the Bay of Islands will pull out all the stops to field their best team, too. Even the venue, Pioneer Rugby Park, is getting upgraded ahead of the big clash on Field Days Friday. Funding has been approved to install state of the

DARGAVILLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BOARD

The Seed Co-Working Office

Dargaville Community Development Board (DCDB) is a not for profit organisation which has been in existence since 2015. The DCDB's focus is on Community Engagement for Revitalisation and Growth to promote economic development in Dargaville and surrounding areas. The office is centrally located off Victoria St and the office hours are Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.00pm or as required. During the last six years many projects have been initiated and some completed, others are a work in progress and some are developing the next stage. Covid has in some ways hindered us, while in other ways it has required that we step up for the community to assist and support during these difficult times. The outcome has been a growing presence and profile for the DCDB within the community. Current projects include the Dargaville CCTV Project Stage 2, Dargaville Racing Club concept development which includes residential, retirement village, commercial and retail, walkways and reserves, Visitor/Tourism and a Destination Strategy for Dargaville and The Kauri Coast and the Destination Dargaville Makeover Magic aka the Great Dargaville Working Bee - creating an attractive and vibrant Dargaville.

The Great Dargaville Working Bee

Creating a Vibrant and Attractive Town Dargaville is a unique town with a long history of innovation and enterprise. It is the only town in New Zealand that is named after it's founder, and is located within a beautiful region in close proximity to some of Northland's most stunning natural attractions. Innovation and enterprise still exist here, with many opportunities to explore. We need your help to create a vibrant and attractive Dargaville. Each one of us has a role to play in The Great Dargaville Working Bee; be it building owner, business owner, employee, or volunteer. Visitors don't know who is responsible to update decor, upskill serving staff, or provide an on-trend menu. They just want delicious food, comfortable accommodation, and a great experience. With the shift in Kiwis exploring New Zealand, and the coming of the Kaihu Valley Trail Cycleway, Dargaville could potentially welcome more than 60,000 extra visitors each year, we believe it is time to make ready and put our “game” face on. We are encouraging local businesses to become Participants in The Great Dargaville Working Bee, to take advantage of discounts being offered on products and services, and to freshen up Our Town. If you are unsure what project you could undertake, ask the opinion of a trusted friend. This is a 12 month initiative so there is plenty of time to consider how to participate but we would love to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. It is not only the visitor sector that will provide our visitors with the 'next level service', to create a sense of pride for all of us, we need to come together to make Dargaville SHINE!

Dargaville and districts has long been known as the Kauri Coast and has engendered the name as a result of our strong association with the Kauri history of yesteryear and the Trounson Kauri Park, a landlocked island known to be relatively free of predators. The nearby Waipoua Forest and giant Kauri tree, Tane Mahuta, are also an easy drive from Dargaville and worth a stop if you are travelling from either north or south The Destination Strategy which is under development will rediscover our hidden gems:

DARGAVILLE & SURROUNDS

Redesigning education in Ruawai u by Andy Bryenton

Ruawai College is leading the way for a complete overhaul of the educational curriculum, as schools across the country make plans to move into NCEA changes. Sometimes working in a smaller rural college setting means accepting the limitations of distance, says Assistant Principal Jay Warren. Sometimes, it comes with the freedom to be innovative. This, he opines, is one of those times. “If you are going to redesign a curriculum, you have to do it right,” says Jay. “You have to do your due diligence, talk to your community, your faculty and the students, most importantly.” Jay says the new curriculum hinges on the wellness of young people, mentally, socially and physically. To get the balance right and ensure that youngsters are engaged with learning, they enlisted the aid of a heavyweight mind in the field of neuroscience educator Nathan Wallis. The former University of Canterbury lecturer is regarded as a leader in this discipline. “Focussing on the wellness of young people is literally the best way to raise your academic outcomes,” says Nathan. He has the science to back this up. “Happy kids are in their frontal cortex, they have more social awareness,

are more able to regulate emotion, they have better interpersonal skills. Statistically, this leads to better outcomes in adulthood, in those key areas of employment, mental health and social adjustment.” Assistant Principal Warren agreed that transitioning education from a model developed in the industrial revolution to produce clerks and factory workers is a big task. Still, all the evidence points to the necessity of a change. “We remember five per cent of what we hear, 10 per cent of what you read and, by contrast, 75 per cent of what we do. We’re changing to a doing system of learning. The current model is outmoded, and if you’re not progressing, you’re regressing,” says Jay. Students will no longer choose year-long subjects to gain credits but will pick term-long modules that blend different concepts. A module on cinema, for example, could teach optics, the science of light, the art of scriptwriting and acting, props design, the history of Hollywood’s golden era and computer special effects programming. Mathematics,

Wishing all our customers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

science, arts and the humanities are all intertwined. As students choose what they are passionate about, there should be more buy-in and engagement. Ruawai’s assistant principal also has a message for those who think that a rote, one size fits all approach to education is better. “Ask your child what they think. Ask them which kind of school they want to

attend. When we, as teachers, teach to their vision, their passion and their choices, students want to learn, they want to be at school because all of a sudden school and learning is relevant to their specific passions and visions.” From the first class of 2022, Ruawai College will be at the forefront of the NCEA changes, which will, by 2025, affect every school in New Zealand. ¢

THE SUMMER LIFESTYLER December 2021

Helping each other through COVID-19 With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate. Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate. Make a plan

Support while isolating

If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will get home or self isolate where you are.

It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.

While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church or any community or private events or gatherings. No one outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home. Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.

Who can help out Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people, conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your whānau and community can help each other when needed.

You’ll have a support person who will contact you often to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported – even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also get a telephone number for 24-hour health support. If you need more help or support to manage at home, you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.

What you’ll need To help you get through, you will need to have food, medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare

Check what support is available for self-isolating at home and find more preparation tips at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare

HEALTH

Future rosy at Dargaville Hospital u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s hospital is a huge asset to the town’s wellbeing, so when the call went out to the community to refurbish its scenic rose gardens, people picked up tools and flocked to the cause. “We’ve embarked on a project to create a beautiful cottage-style garden, featuring mass heritage rose plantings, that patients in the Dargaville Hospital and Hospice Kaipara Kowhai Room

can enjoy from their rooms, verandah or inside the new wheelchair friendly Kaipara Hospice Tranquil Space Structure,” said Kaipara Community Health Trust CEO Debbie Evans. ¢

p Olga Yuretich, convenor for Heritage Roses Northland, read about the project in the Kaipara Lifestyler and reached out to offer assistance. It led to 60 heritage roses being donated from Heritage Roses NZ. Extra special thanks goes out to Tasman Bay Roses, whose family owned business directly donated heritage plants for the project.

NWC Northern Wairoa Contracting Ltd

p KCHT Project leader Pauline Hilliam worked tirelessly with John and Margaret Bishop preparing and developing the site with heavy-duty machines. No stone has been left unturned in this garden spruce-up. The old rose bed soil has been removed and replaced with six truckloads of beautiful Glinks Gully soil, generously donated and carted in by Chick Transport.

HEALTH

Planning for a healthy future u by Andy Bryenton

A growing population and the nationwide trend of an ageing population mean that health is a major focus for future growth in the Kaipara District. Well served by medical centres and Dargaville’s hospital, the region has good primary medical coverage east to west, with a very active community health trust and the services of Māori healthcare professionals Te THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

Hā Oranga helping to provide better outcomes. Dargaville alone is home to massage therapists, audiologists, physiotherapists, mental health counselling services and opportunities to be proactive with health, such as sporting clubs and gyms. Eldercare is a priority well addressed throughout the Kaipara, with reputable retirement homes, rest homes and hospitals located in the larger towns. A recent example of a community caring for its older citizens comes from Maungaturoto, which this year opened a new home for dementia patients, augmenting a communityowned and operated rest home. However, there are multiple opportunities for enterprising health care providers to make their mark in the Kaipara, as the effects of migration from the city are felt. A growing population demands not just the core services of general practitioners but also associated disciplines such as optometry, dentistry and dental prostheses, acupuncture and other forms of holistic healing, dietary consultancy and many more.

p The Kaipara District is growing, and this provides an opportunity for health and wellbeing practitioners who will be welcomed by a growing population with a higher median age

A larger population with a higher median age means there is demand aplenty. Many of these services are currently only available to local residents by driving a considerable distance to Whangārei. While Dargaville Medical Centre has been proactive in seeking new doctors this year, it’s these other, often independent practices that provide an opportunity. It could be either for new graduates seeking to found their own business in an area where they will be welcomed or for

experienced professionals seeking a sea-change lifestyle. With core health services coming through Covid strong and opportunities to expand for ambitious new names in both health, wellbeing and fitness, the Kaipara is poised for a near-future expansion of both supply and demand for the wellness industry. Whether you’re a professional in that field or not, the pace of life and outdoor opportunities here make a move to the Kaipara a healthy choice. ¢

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

In praise of the humble kumara ˉ u by Andy Bryenton

Kaipara is kūmara country, and the root vegetable is everywhere, from road signs to restaurant menus. Try the regional delicacy, and you’ll see why it’s been a hit since people first came to these shores. Long before European navigators dared sail out of sight of land, sticking to the trade routes of the Mediterranean, Polynesian voyagers made the trip from the Pacific islands to Peru, trading with the people who would become the Incas. We know this because the kūmara originates in mountainous South America. Trade is the only way the sweet vegetable, so often associated with New Zealand, could have arrived. Kūmara was of vital importance to those hardy seafaring people, who legendarily sailed their oceangoing waka from Hawaiki to become the ancestors of the Māori. For navigators setting out across the Pacific, the easily preserved, nutrient-packed kūmara was a superfood. In pre-European times kūmara was a commodity of great importance, with its own rituals, place in the calendar, and atua or deity, Rongomā-Tāne. In a reflection of the proverb of an army ‘marching on its stomach’, there is a Māori saying that the strength of a people is not in its taua

(warrior regiments) but in its kūmara storehouses. Another proverb about the kūmara from pre-European days reflects that this foodstuff was common but delicious and vital. ‘Kāore te kūmara e kōrero mō tōna ake reka’, people would say, as a response to praise and a reminder to be humble in victory; ‘the kūmara does not say how sweet it is’. The land around Dargaville and Ruawai became known as kūmara country commercially in the 20th century, as the kauri logging era drew to a close. The unique rich soils of the region are leavened with volcanic minerals and river silt, to the point that experiments are ongoing right now to transform the Poutō Peninsula with irrigation, replacing the market gardens of Pukekohe and Bombay with new arable fields. Kūmara is still a staple crop, with close to 90% of the nation’s crop grown

Several cafes and restaurants vie for the title of best in the district, and it’s delicious fun to make up your mind. Also, in the realm of seafood, the Kaipara is famous for its west coast shellfish, the tuatua. While the cohabiting and larger toheroa was once canned for export, it’s now off the menu, but these smaller shellfish are flavourful chopped with spring onions, cilantro or chives in a fritter. Then there are those who prefer them raw, right on the beach. There’s a limit of 150 per person a day, but this is enough for a hearty meal. If you’re staying with local relatives near the west coast, give digging for tuatua a try. A barbecue is always delicious in the summertime, and what better fare to grill than some award-winning cuts of Angus beef? Wearable arts extravaganza gearing up u by Andy Bryenton

The creative community of the Kaipara will be working hard this summer, preparing for a long-anticipated event on the artistic calendar; Dargaville’s 2022 Wearable Arts extravaganza. Co-organiser John Pickworth says that the challenges of operating around Covid-19 have caused delays but the visionaries who have entered their creations have proven resilient and resourceful. “The 2020 show was cancelled, but at a point where it was fully subscribed with entrants,” says John. “The vast majority of those people committed to returning for 2021, and the postponement of that event until September next year has deterred that majority not at all.” The public, too, is keen for the return of the dramatic show blending music, visual art, fashion, theatre and even circus performance into a vibrant whole. This year, the audio and visual engineers and artists who help frame the contestants’ wearable works have a theme that inspires them. “In 2022, our theme is Down the Rabbit Hole, referencing the timeless fantasy work of author Lewis Carroll,” says John. “3D mapped projectors will be used, as they were to such great

effect in 2019, to transform the venue inside and out.” While the mind behind Alice in Wonderland, and the inspiration for the animated classic of the same name, will be used as a framing device, this does not constrain the visions of the wearable arts designers in any way. Patrons can expect an eclectic mix of sights and styles which transcend even the imagination of Carroll himself. As the creative process comes to fruition, the organisational team behind the extravaganza has been hard at work, ensuring an exceptional experience for the public and a smooth process for judging a winner. “We moved the date to give a higher probability that we would be in Covid response setting orange, and this looks like being the case,” says John. “At the same time, I’m cognisant of the challenges Covid had delivered for business, and that these mean we are still seeking one or two major sponsors to make this show a success.” ¢ p Wearable arts take to the stage — Dargaville’s creative community has embraced the spirit of the competition

Northpower consumers to receive over $11.5m

Northpower is proud to manage the annual fundraising appeal for the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service which has been caring for Northlanders for over 30 years. They have transported well over 21,000 people over this time.

Most Northpower consumers will receive a $248.40 (inc GST) discount in November or December - an increase from $220 (inc GST) last year.

Every year Top Energy and Northpower contribute $250k to the appeal. We have been sponsoring the service since the first flight in 1988. Last year Northlanders donated over $334,000, and we were very thankful for that generosity.

Treats for the holidays u by Deb Wright

A busy day in the kitchen with my daughter Jessica this weekend, we made seven different recipes for sharing with family and friends. Here are several to share with you. Happy holidays all. Cream Caramels 250g butter 1 cup milk 5 cups sugar ½ tsp ginger 2 tablespoons golden syrup 1 tin condensed milk 1 tsp vanilla essence Place in a large pot the butter and milk and melt together. Remove from heat and add the sugar, ginger and golden syrup, return to heat and bring to the boil stirring all the time, boil for five minutes and reduce heat if sticking. Once this has boiled for five minutes, add condensed milk and simmer gently for approx 20 minutes or until a nice caramel

colour is achieved. You do need to stir at this stage, too. So make sure you have plenty of stirrers ready to help. Remove from heat and transfer mixture to bowl, add in vanilla and beat together for several minutes; this helps with setting and making it lovely and creamy. Then pour in a greased dish and wait for it to set. This is a recipe with the high risk of getting caramel stuck to you, which tends to be rather hot, so go carefully.

Deluxe Ricey Crackle 115g Pistachios 115g dried cranberries 360g white chocolate 1½ cups rice bubbles Melt chocolate, let cool a little, then add to all the other ingredients. Place in a lined dish — cut when cold.

Turkish Delight Slice 400g milk chocolate (melted) 1 cup roasted almonds (chopped) 3 Turkish Delight Bars (cut into pieces) 250g marshmallows (halved) Melt chocolate and let cool a little before adding to all the other ingredients, place in a lined dish and let set before cutting.
