2 December 2020 THE SUMMER LIFESTYLER
Message from the mayor Welcome to summer in the Kaipara, a favourite time of year in a favourite place. Some of you will be returning to experience favourite Kaipara places, for others, there’s a whole new Kaipara world to discover. It’s a popular place at the best of times, but this summer here promises to be ‘a next level’ as much has been made of the fact that Kiwis can’t fly overseas for holidays, and so there’s a new desire to get off the beaten track. Kaipara District between Auckland and the Bay of Islands is now in the ‘hot’ zone for places to discover or rediscover. Some who are here for a holiday will be captured by the charms of Kaipara District and then choose to move here permanently, to call this place home. Anyone who does so will be in good company. There are increasing numbers of born-and-bred Kaipara people returning home, and other new residents are finding their way here too, giving us the fastest-growing population in Northland. Between the two oceans and two harbours of Kaipara District, there’s

If you’re in Mangawhai, please pick up the free shuttle bus between the village and the Mangawhai Heads surf beach car park — the only public transport provided by Kaipara District Council. If you’re at Kai Iwi Lakes, you’ll find extra park rangers keeping this jewel of the Kaipara shining, and at Baylys Beach there’s a new boardwalk at the
entrance to the beach. Within Kaipara District, there’s so much to do. Without leaving this place, between these two oceans and two harbours are amazing things to discover. Come on in, the water’s fine. Naumai, haere mai, piki mai ki Kaipara. ‘Mayor Jake’ Jason Smith, Mayor of Kaipara District ¢

We continue to grow. From a visitor’s guide to Northland attractions published just four times a year, to multiple regional newspapers covering most of New Zealand’s rural area has been an exciting journey, in a little more than a decade, for Integrity Community Media. Owned by Allan and Patricia Mortensen, the company started expanding with its flagship weekly publication, the Kaipara Lifestyler, which this year has become biweekly with editions midweek and at weekends. “Today we have the Kaipara Lifestyler, The Weekend Lifestyler, Northern Farming , Waikato Farming , Taranaki Farming, Manawatu Farming and Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles, all emanating from our offices in Dargaville,” said Allan. “This, in fact, means we are now producing in excess of 1.6 million newspapers a year. “Just like the rest of the nation, we have experienced the rough and tumble of economic life due to the Covid-19 emergency and the lockdown associated with this ongoing event. “However, a long-held desire to introduce our Weekend Kaipara Lifestyler was just the tonic needed to lift our spirits by launching this publication while the average business in New Zealand simply buttoned down to weather the storm. “It brought a breath of fresh air to our community and has gone from
strength to strength. Of course, integral to this has been the huge support we have received from our advertisers and readers, and the recent roll-out in Kaipara of high speed fibre has enhanced the business opportunities in the district, each with a story to tell. “Modern high-speed communications mean our staff are enjoying workplace sophistication with an enviable lifestyle. No traffic lights, traffic congestion, and plenty of space to live and play on the edge of our huge Kaipara Harbour. “Integrity Community Media has created employment opportunities for journalists, graphic designers, sales staff and office administration people.” Company general manager Deb Wright comments: “Our flagship publication, the Kaipara Lifestyler now joined with our Weekend Lifestyler edition, are Kaipara publications for Kaipara people and we are keeping our investment in the district while covering a wide area of the nation with our rural stable of publications. “Our business is about people and the community. We couldn’t do what we do without our great team.” ¢
p Publisher Allan Mortensen and general manager Deb Wright would like to thank the Kaipara community for all their wonderful support throughout this challenging year

KAIPARA THEN
Many summertimes ago u by Liz Clark
Celebrating life and leisure in the Kaipara District back in the early days wasn’t as easy as it is in the 21st century; it was less complicated. In earlier times, despite the challenges and hardships of living from the land, previous generations still had time to enjoy themselves. The highlight for many of the young settlements were the annual social gatherings, celebrations of hall and church openings, weddings and christenings. These events brought people from isolated farms and smallholdings from around the outer areas. A multitude of accounts from the early days of settlement describes celebrations in intricate detail right down to the outfits the people of the time were wearing. Unlike the convenience of online supermarket shopping today, the people then had to rely on whatever they had grown on the land, raised for meat or kept for dairy supply. A look back into 1861, had the leading figures of the early Mangawhai community celebrating Queen Victoria’s birthday and forming a farmer’s society
at the same time in the first hotel onsite, where the current one now sits. ‘A plentiful table, literally groaning with the good things of the season, was provided by the hospitable landlord Mr Mooney.’ Nine years further on, a look at the then-infant township of Maungaturoto in the year 1870, the township held its first agricultural show, the highlight being ‘a splendid show of choice and well-grown fruits of various kinds’. Later Paparoa and Dargaville also formed their own agricultural and pastoral associations, which still run to this day as part of the annual summer fixture on the social calendar. Having access to the Kaipara Harbour and its river systems for those on the western side soon gave rise to annual regattas, the oldest of which, the Pahi Regatta, is still active to this day. The timber milling settlements of Aratapu and Te Kopuru had soon organised their own annual boat races
Racing as a sport was later formalised
p Beach life in the 1970s at Mangawhai included going to the North’s store at the heads and stocking up with milk, bread and ice creams
on the Northern Wairoa River. Anything, from small rowing boats to steamers, was utilised to provide the sport of the day. Before the advent of the motor car, the horse was the main mode of transportation and with it came another pastime in a modified version of the sport of kings. Beach racing was
introduced as early as the late 1850s at Mangawhai and Batley. There was great tumult if a local horse or pony won the big race of the day. Incidents of ‘sly-grog selling’ weren’t uncommon and the local police constables were kept on their toes searching for illicit liquor on race days. Racing as a sport was later formalised by the inauguration

p Simple pleasures — these two gentlemen during the 1930s were proud to show off their catch from the waters of the Kaipara Harbour p The more ‘daring’ bathing costumes of the early 1900s were a stark contrast for the more modest long skirts, boots, blouses and hats in the 19th century
of the Matakohe and Northern Wairoa racing clubs with the latter only ceasing in the last few months of 2020. The beach, of course, has always been a popular venue to visit during the heat of summer. From the generations who grew up at the early milling settlements, to those who took up the surfing lifestyle during the 1960s and 70s. Old images of well-dressed ladies in long skirts and hats along with parasols can be seen in Kaipara’s local museums along with the more ‘daring’ costumes from the 1900s.
With the advent of more reliable motor launches during the 1920s onward, recreational fishing became an integral part of the leisure activities enjoyed on the water, mostly by men but also women. Kaipara, as with the Bay of Islands, became an attraction for keen anglers from all walks of life. Stories abound of record catches and ‘the big one that got away’. However, some stories hold true and such was the case Mr E Pook, in 1947. Pook was more than 60 years old when he landed a large 3.81-metre

mako shark. The story goes that Mr Pook incensed by the shark spoiling his day’s fishing, out at the Kaipara heads, put out a line to hook the marine predator and caught it. After towing it back to Pahi, he landed the shark, which was estimated at a weight of 454 kilograms. The shark’s head was cut off and sent to Whangarei where it was put on display. Not to be outdone by the legendary catches on the western side of Kaipara, Mangawhai on the east coast also had its share of big fish
tales to tell. In 1934, a group of keen anglers came together and formed the Mangawhai Deep Sea Fishing Club. In the same year, the biggest catch was a large mako shark weighing in at 227 kilograms caught near the Hen and Chicks Islands. In 1937, the club reported the catch of a smaller mako at the heads with a weigh-in of 112 kilograms, followed by a shovelnose dogfish off the rocks. It was reported at the time the dogfish had been carrying 14 pups. The tradition of ‘going out for a fish’ continues to this day. ¢

Forward with confidence u by Paul Campbell
Innovation underlines the progress of Kaipara into the future, and the outlook is rich in major developments in environmental, technological, agricultural sectors along with overall enhanced living conditions that will rival any in the country. While the past year has had the world reeling under the spectre of Covid-19, New Zealand’s geographic isolation and can-do attitude have seen us spared the worst of the storm, although isolation can be a doubleedged sword. Nonetheless, we are forging ahead, and a major development that will have a lasting effect on Kaipara’s future will be the $100 million fund to clean up the Kaipara Harbour, the largest in the southern hemisphere. The programme is expected to create many new jobs and has been welcomed as a critical turning point by those championing the scheme — the Uri affiliated to Kaipara Moana, and the four councils around the harbour — Auckland, Kaipara District, Whangarei District and Nor thland Regional councils.
“
At its heart the ambitious scheme aims to improve the health of the harbour by working with local communities including landowners and the farming sector, to halve sediment loss from the land. Connecting our communities has reached world standard with Nor thpower expanding its ultrafast broadband fibre network to more homes and businesses across the district to Dargaville, Ruawai, Paparoa, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka, Mangawhai and Mangawhai Heads. In a world where working from home has become more frequent, Kaipara is in a box seat. Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith says “the work Northpower Fibre has been doing in recent years to extend its fibre network right across Kaipara is great for the community because it keeps us connected.
This is helping us grow a better Kaipara

p Dargaville’s new pontoon wharf has been welcomed by charter boat services
“This is helping us grow a better Kaipara.” The KDC has also embarked on a programme of building new wharf facilities at Dargaville, Pahi and Pouto to enhance the use of water transport into the future. Its Kaipara Kai programme is looking at innovation in agriculture, with irrigation schemes which will see Kaipara becoming a food bowl for the nation.

MANGAWHAI
A true Mangawhai trailblazer u by Andy Bryenton
Early in December dignitaries and well-wishers gathered in a Mangawhai park to pay homage to a trailblazer of the region, Dr Gordon Hosking of the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust. Gordon is already an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. However, his latest accolade reflects his role in organising the so-called ‘trackies’, a group who have opened up vast swathes of the coastal and Brynderwyn forests for hikers. The outdoor Access Champion Award, which he won, is intended to reward just this kind of community spirit. The awards are an annual event organised by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission Ara Hikoi Aotearoa. Chief Executive Ric Cullinane says the awards celebrate people and community groups around the country who are developing trails and making it easier for people to experience the outdoors. He and his team were effusive in their praise for Gordon and the ‘trackies’. “He works alongside and with local iwi, community members, the Department of Conservation and the council,” says Ric. “He has defended the public’s right of access successfully in the Environment Court. He has also built a team of 70 volunteers who develop and maintain tracks around Mangawhai. “Through the network’s creation, improved access into the bush has allowed for more trapping. This has enabled the Department

of Conservation to successfully reintroduce a kiwi population on the land.” Gordon himself is humble in the face of such credit and insists that other stalwarts of the trust, such as Mike Hay, Richard Henry and Greg Stump deserve this award as much as he does. He calls it “an award for the whole team”, citing the many hours put in by all of the ‘trackies’ for two decades. “I’m just another cog in the wheel. There are so many volunteers who get stuck in each Friday. I think it’s good
for their mental and physical health, and it keeps them out of trouble,” says Gordon. Moreover, there is a serious advantage to the work the trust has undertaken. Not only in kiwi conservation, but in allowing access to some of the most amazing places on Earth to the
average walker, who may not be able to hike through dense trackless bush, but who can bring the family when a trail has been cut and prepared. “Our role is to get out there and make it accessible,” he says. “We want people to be able to experience these sights up close and first hand.” ¢

December 2020 THE SUMMER LIFESTYLER
MANGAWHAI
Change and tradition u by Andy Bryenton
Steeped in history but boosted by growth and change, Mangawhai has been transformed from a sleepy holiday destination to ground zero for hot property in the Kaipara.
p The east coast paradise of Mangawhai is no longer a well-kept secret, and the town blends the best of the classic Kiwi holiday with cosmopolitan touches and delectable dining options
The fastest-growing seaside town in New Zealand offers the best of old and new as passionate residents strive to retain the classic character of their oasis by the coast. This year has seen victories in retaining the unique history of Mangawhai, such as expansions to the historic village and the handover of the sailing ship Daring, lost beneath the sands of Muriwai for 155 years and now set to take pride of place in the heart of the town where she was built. Arts and culture play a big part
in Mangawhai life, and an expansion to the local art gallery and workspace has been a godsend as the town continues to enjoy a renaissance-level enthusiasm in all the visual arts. Outdoor recreation has always been a huge part of Mangawhai life. The continued expansion and utility of the Mangawhai Activity Zone have seen everything from top skaters to internationally-acclaimed jazz musicians use the space to wow the crowds. New works at the Wood Street shops promise better parking and
pedestrian flow when finished, and a cycle and walkway will finally connect the heads and the village precincts in the very near future. As usual, summer here comes with a side order of live
This year has seen victories music at the historic tavern, sunny market days, and a choice of dining options from the classic barbecue at the campground through to fine cuisine and cosmopolitan cafe menus.
With massive developments underway in this sought-after locale, long-term residents are engaged with efforts to retain the pace of life, holiday atmosphere and friendliness of Mangawhai to be enjoyed for generations to come. As you visit this summer, you’ll find a town balanced between tradition and modernity, justifiably proud of the sweeping vistas of coastline and forest all around, and offering a warm welcome that’s miles from the big city in attitude, but still delivers a taste of sophistication. ¢

Kaipara’s chrome rangers u by Andy Bryenton
In sheds, barns, garages and workshops all across the region you’ll find them; classic and vintage cars, hot rods and muscle cars, spanning the years from the dawn of the ‘horseless carriage’ to the fire-breathing street machines of the 60s and 70s. With numerous clubs and events, passionate advocates of various eras and styles, and a population keen on horsepower and chrome, automotive appreciators are thick on the ground here, as evidenced by one of the biggest car and bike dates on the summer calendar. The Black Swamp Rod run is in its 13th year this January 4, and draws in classic and muscle car lovers from the east coast and beyond. Coorganiser Sandra Brunt says that the family-friendly event gets better each January, as new folks pick up the hobby of driving and restoring classic cars. Cool vintage and retro bikes are also warmly welcomed. “We get a few new ones each year, people who have perhaps moved locally and who have managed to pick up that dream car they wanted. It’s always good to see them. Then there are people who come back year after year, spread out a picnic blanket under the olive trees, open a bottle of wine and shoot the breeze with likeminded drivers. “There’s a strong classic car and hot rod community here in this area. The Black Swamp Rod Run is a brilliant warm up before the big show in Kumeu, plus a great chance to catch up with friends and enjoy a summer outing with

the family.” Part of the treat of joining in on this run is the cruise itself, which winds along the coast past some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in the country, setting off after registration at 9am. The convoy of classics returns to Phil Lathrope’s Black Swamp Road orchard after visiting Waipu, where there will be hot food, cold drinks and live music thanks to the Slickback
Rockabilly band. With a hot sunny day predicted, even those boys might forego the traditional hotrodder’s jacket and jeans for a T-shirt and shorts. Why do so many Kaipara people love
their classic and retro cars and bikes? It’s because ownership of a beautiful machine also comes with a passionate, friendly and welcoming community built-in. ¢

Local Mangawhai business owner Kyle Robinson has an alter ego when he closes his beachside store for the day. When he hits the rugby field, Kyle is a player, proponent and passionate advocate for Tag Football, a fast-paced new sport that’s taking the area by storm. Kyle is a founding member of the Northland Stingrays, a club that has arisen from enthusiastic local engagement in the game. As he explains, Tag is based on the fastpaced rules of Rugby League, but is a non-contact, tactical sport which rewards quick footwork and teamwork between eight people each side. Literal velcro tags adorn the uniforms of the players, and grabbing one of these counts as a tackle, meaning that sheer brawn and ferocity are outmatched in Tag Football by nimble, strategic play. “It’s a high-skills and high-energy game, with eight on the field and another eight on the bench,” says Kyle. “There’s a lot of substitutions on and off so that the energy and enthusiasm levels are high.” The Stingrays club was started in 2013, after local rugby and league enthusiast and Tomarata Rugby Club collaborator, Tanya Healey, brought the concept of Tag Football Thursdays to the club as a module. Kyle says that the fast, fun game was an instant hit and that he, like others, was determined to take it to the next level. Cue a steady rise during the years as Kyle and others at the Tomarata club have recruited, trained, played and refereed, nurturing the sport to the point where the Stingrays now

compete in the national competition each year. “From the moment it started the whole community was behind it,” he says. “We have players and families from all over the Kaipara involved.” Next year will see a landmark event for Tag Football, with the first-ever Manning Smith Memorial Cup. The event, a fun day of mixed teams play for children and adults, boys, girls and their parents commemorates local community figure and sporting personality Manning Smith, now sadly
passed away but remembered with respect and gratitude. On February 13, Tomarata Rugby Club will be in full Tag mode, with a fun tournament, music, food, entertainment and a great chance to both watch and get involved with the fastest growing non-contact sport in the North. ¢

The project was initiated by the Mangawhai Business Association, which first approached the council in 2019. Mangawhai Business Association chair Alan Corkin proposed that with changes, the area could better accommodate local residents and summer visitors accessing the Wood Street area. “Parking is essential to the health of the businesses in the area, but cars create congestion problems and safety concerns. The new layout attempts to resolve these issues and encourage the public to spend more time in Wood Street,” says Mr Corkin. The Kaipara District Council concurred, and the resulting plan was 90 per cent funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency. Some of the key changes include a oneway traffic system on Wood Street, parking reconfigurations and upgrades to parking areas, adding additional parking overall while also boosting the areas of pedestrian spaces and openair artworks. Mangawhai programme delivery manager Tim Manning says
p Groups, as varied as the Mangawhai Artists Inc, the Mangawhai Shed, Kaipara District Council parks team and community volunteers, have made the new Wood Street design a reality in recent weeks
it’s been great to have the community involved in directing the design of Wood Street. “Future changes will be based on real time feedback. We are already looking at improvements on mobility parking, an additional drop-in area and a loading zone. What we want to see is a vibrant, attractive Wood Street
that is people-friendly,” he says. “The Mangawhai Business Association has really led the way on this project,” says Kaipara District Council Community Adviser Gail Fotheringham. “I want to acknowledge the work of the various community groups and members working so hard on this project.” ¢

From wine to golf u by Ann van Engelen
Mike Reid has been involved in golf since the 1970s when he caddied for his dad and is now the golf operations manager at the Mangawhai Golf Club. “I have been working in the industry for 15 years and previously managed Omaha and Warkworth Golf Clubs,” says Mike. “Prior to this, I was a winemaker, but my enthusiasm for golf overpowered my enthusiasm for wine. My wife Karen and I originate from Christchurch and are in the process of relocating to Mangawhai from Matakana. We are looking forward to a bright future in Kaipara. “My dad taught me to play, but he was left-handed, so I had a slow start as I had to play left-handed. One Christmas I received right-handed golf clubs, and I never looked back. “The thing I admire about golf is people from all walks of life and ages play. I have made many lifelong friends with people of all ages that I would not have necessarily met. “I enjoy the challenges of the game. As an individual sport, it is all on your ability. I also appreciate the outdoor lifestyle and fitness thing, along with getting Vitamin D. “I was here for a short-term last year but left to pursue the wine industry again. With Covid, the wine didn’t pan out, and I was invited back to manage the shop. I like the integrity, honestly,

Kaipara coast to coast u by Andy Bryenton
Travelling through the Kaipara during the summertime is one of the most scenic and interesting road trips in the nation, with all manner of historic and engaging things to see and do. Seeing as you’re here, why not follow the highway from coast to coast, enjoying some of its local treasures along the way? Where the Pacific Ocean meets the shore on the east coast, you’ll find Mangawhai Heads, a perfect place to enjoy the scenery and take a dip in the ocean. Hikers can explore the network of tracks carved out of the Brynderwyn hills by local volunteers; the Tanekaha Tracks complex features amazing views and three waterfalls. While in town, check out the Mangawhai Museum and also the Mangawhai Artists’ Gallery. Take the scenic drive through to Kaiwaka to meet up with State Highway One, and you’ll pass by Baldrock and Pukekaoro, the setting for early novelist Jane Mander’s Story of a New Zealand River, the inspiration for the film The Piano. Kaiwaka itself is lit up by night, with many shops and buildings covered in tiny lights all-year-round. Turning off toward the Kauri Coast you’ll enter Maungaturoto, where the old hotel has stories to tell; it’s the only pub in history to be nearly lost at sea, twice! You can also visit the small bay at Batley where the pub ran around during transit. Carry on around the harbour and enjoy the welcoming

on a finger of land pointing out into the wide Kaipara Harbour. Great fishing is to be had here. Those who wish to delve into history can’t miss a stop in Matakohe. It’s the home of the Kauri Museum, with its excellent collection of colonial artefacts and stories from the ‘wild west’ days of the Kauri Coast. The staff here, many volunteers, love to share the wild, the strange, the poignant and the incredible with their visitors. It is also the site of two historic churches, and the home of 1920s prime minister, Joseph Gordon Coates. Don’t forget to check out the White Rock Gallery next door to the museum for fresh artworks from a prolific and talented local creative community. Cruise on into Ruawai, through flat fertile fields, which were all drained by hand-dug canals, in the style of Holland in Europe, and you’ll marvel at the
sheer determination of the Dalmatian settlers who achieved this feat. It’s the biggest colonial-era feat of engineering in New Zealand and the source of most of the entire world’s kumara supply. Passing through Ruawai, you’ll notice some Kiwi icons atop the packhouse of Kaipara Kumara. The Big Fresh vegetable mascots from the old supermarket chain, which were lost for decades, have found a new home there, and make a great photo opportunity for the family. If you want to take in an amazing view, and feel fit and agile, stop at Tokatoka, the core of an ancient volcano, which stands out over a bend in the Northern Wairoa River. It’s possible to scale to the very top of this steep-sided rocky cone thanks to well-maintained tracks, and the reward is a photo opportunity that’s without parallel. in the river walk with its plaques denoting sites of everything from aviation firsts to tales of adversity and murder in olden times. A town with a rich heritage, Dargaville has its own museum, vintage machinery collection and even the masts of the sabotaged peace vessel Rainbow Warrior. There’s great local art on display in Hokianga Road at the Muddy Waters Gallery. Go south for an odyssey to the lighthouse at Pouto Point, where shipwrecks have been known to emerge from under the sand after storms. Surfcast off the Ripiro Coast at Glinks Gully or Baylys Beach. North, you’ll find Trounson Kauri Park, a haven for kiwi and kauri, which feels like stepping back into a prehistoric world. On the coast, are the
Kai Iwi Lakes, pristine clear-water dune lakes, which are a tourist hotspot in summer, surrounded by a biking and walking track that also leads down to the coast for sensational sunsets. From there, it’s not too far up the road to the Waipoua Forest, the largest oldgrowth kauri forest in the north. Tane Mahuta, the legendary biggest living thing in New Zealand, is part of this forest realm, but there’s so much to see here that a quick stop would be a shame. These are just a few of the highlights you’ll find along the road through the Kaipara; there are plenty more little gems tucked away down side roads or in sheltered bays and coves, waiting for you to come and explore. ¢

Kia ora 2020 has been a year like no other for us all. Looking in the rearview mirror to see how far we’ve come, here are some highlights from the Council year: • Summer drought starting a year ago stretched everyone’s water supplies thinly, and as a result new investments are “in the pipeline” now to ease future water issues. • The Kaipara Kai Hub was opened at Ruawai in the middle of the District, and future land use options and water storage for irrigation are underway for growing the kai in Kaipara. • Council voted unanimously to oppose the Dome Valley dump, in a landmark decision that will echo down the years and stands for me as the moment of which I am most proud in a year of courageous Council decisions.
• Towards a brighter future Council has developed a 30 year Infrastructure Strategy, and also has adopted a full Kaipara District Spatial Plan for every town and rural part of Kaipara District out to 2050 — Nga Wawata 2050 — Our Aspirations. This full spatial plan will help keep the place — already the fastest-growing District in the North Island — from growing like topsy. • Finally, in a year when councils across New Zealand have had troubles, our Kaipara District Council has continued to work together well, and also with other councils in the north, to keep representation of our Kaipara people strong and clear. We’re all in this together.
On behalf of all Kaipara District Council I wish all Kaipara people, friends and family a safe and happy Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year. MAUNGATUROTO
Love this town u by Liz Clark
Drive into the township of Maungaturoto and there’s always someone you know saying hello, offering a hand or just having a chat; it’s a community with heart. “I love that everyone knows where you are and they all keep an eye on your house. I love that going to the shop takes a long time because you have many catch-ups along the way. Everyone always makes you feel welcome and a part of the community,” says well-known resident Vic Kurupo. Maungaturoto is more than just a collection of shops and houses in a rural setting. It’s the people that make the township the vibrant community that it is. The work of many together has raised the community profile to an entirely new level. The fundraising efforts of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust led by community stalwart Albie Paton are a testament to that. Albie runs The Den, a former Scout hall down on Bickerstaffe Road, which sells donated secondhand goods. The funds raised have contributed more than $100,000 to the building of the soon to be completed dementia unit. Despite his 80 years, Mr Paton is a hands-on get-it-done kind of character.
“
An offshoot of the fundraising efforts for the dementia unit was the highlysuccessful Dahlias for Dementia garden tour weekend back in February. It was the result of a committee of five local women, Karen Smales, Rae Roadley, Anne Pryde, Marg Paton and Kimberly Sinclair. Joined by an army of volunteers and 20 garden owners working together, the resulting weekend raised more than $20,000 towards the dementia unit fund. The current president of the Maungaturoto Residents Association, Terri Donaldson is another name that comes up frequently. Terri’s boundless energy for organising community activities motivates many into getting involved. In between running an organic dairy farm, volunteering at The Kauri Museum and running the meetings for the Maungaturoto Residents Association, she also organises the annual Christmas parade as well as Calf Club events at the Paparoa A&P Show.
I love that everyone knows where you are

friendships made during the years are irreplaceable. The love and respect we have received make growing older and slowing down in our beautiful surroundings so much easier. I don’t think we will be moving any time soon!” ¢

MAUNGATUROTO
A community’s legacy of care u by Andy Bryenton
When coronavirus locked down New Zealand, the front lines were drawn at the doors of our rest homes and hospitals for the elderly. In Maungaturoto, the Riverview Rest Home faced the crisis with confidence, all while building a new dementia care unit. Manager of the community-run and funded home, Tracy Chapman, says that while Covid presented challenges, the staff and the builders helping complete a new 14-room dementia care wing went above and beyond to keep residents safe. “We went into lockdown with everyone else, but at the same time, we were in the middle of a reconstruction of the front of the building and a new
build at the back. When the builders and tradespeople had to enter the rest home, they were required to mask up and wear full protective gear. “Of course, visitors were also having to do the same at the time, and our staff had changes of clothes between home and work. The moral of the story, though; we’ve had no chest infections at all this year. Covid precautions have helped prevent colds and flu as well.”

It’s in the nature of Tracy and the board of Riverview to look on the optimistic side, planning a dementia care unit early, even as similar facilities across the north filled up. The board, all locals of good standing, have helped fundraise in various ways to make this a reality, from selling second-hand goods at local op shop The Den through to approaching charitable groups and applying to the government’s Provincial Growth Fund. “We had a walk through visit for the community to see how far we’d come
with the build, in late November,” says Tracey. “From that came the idea of locals sponsoring a room, with all the furniture and decor.” Several have indeed stepped up to do just that, a testament to how Maungaturoto folk consider their local rest home to be both a privilege and a responsibility. With tens of thousands of dollars raised and building pushing on through the disruption of 2020, this legacy project will ensure that Maungaturoto families get to stay close. ¢

PAPAROA/PAHI/MATAKOHE/TINOPAI
A gentlemen’s repose u by Andy Bryenton
Some of our Kaipara towns have an indefinable character which makes them truly Kiwi. Often, that character is made up of local traditions, legends and personalities who add to a sense of community, as in the following true story about Paparoa’s Gentlemen’s Club, the Rotarians, two dogs, a politician and a seat with a five-decade legacy. Paparoa’s dairy and fast food shop has served the small village for sixty years. For all that time a stout wooden bench outside the door has been a welcome rest for folks walking their dogs or coming down to collect takeaways and treats, says local Rotary Club president Rodney Tysoe. Members of the local ‘gentlemen’s club’, an establishment of civic-minded blokes, valued the old ancestral seat as a part of the town’s history, as well as a place to meet, discuss the news of the day and contemplate the river across the road. “That was until two large dogs were tied to the seat whilst their master went inside,” says Rodney. “Legend has it that a prominent politician drove past and scared the two dogs. The two dogs, being spooked, took off with the seat in tow, and were last seen heading down the road, wrecking the seat beyond recognition in their progress.” This ‘legend’, which proved all too true, left the local dairy with no seat and the town without a focal meeting place, which had served since the 60s. So it could have remained if it were not for a group of handy local gents determined to reclaim their place in
“
the sun. “Rotary past president Alex Tetzner was disappointed to see the seat was gone and decided it needed replacing,” says Rodney. “He contacted two members from the local Gentlemen’s Club, Bryan Walker and Noel Smith. After a lot of discussion it was decided that the seat needed replacing. “Trevor Rintoul donated the locally sourced macrocarpa timber for this project, Nick Tetzner dressed the timber, Carters Maungaturoto donated the hardware, and the gentlemen’s club built it. Rotary member Tim Magill fixed the council’s requests to make the seat secure and up to health and safety code.” What could have ended up as a blank space and a funny story about unruly pets brought like-minded folks together from two neighbouring towns, donating their time and expertise to put things straight. We don’t know what happened to the dogs, or if the incident affected the local politician’s chances of re-election. What we do know is that Paparoa still has a dairy seat where, on a fine morning, you’ll find locals taking a load off and shooting the breeze. It’s a tale which tells you a lot about dog ownership; but a lot more about Paparoa and its people. ¢

LOOK FOR THE YELLOW FLAG WE’RE OPEN IN THE HOLIDAYS!
Dubbed the ‘kumara capital of the world’, Ruawai’s production of the universally known sweet potato contributes approximately 90% of product for the New Zealand fresh and processing industry. Five major packhouses now wash and grade product to a uniform industry standard. Around 17,500 tonnes of the staple vegetable are produced, which is worth around $25 million on the domestic market. The name Ruawai essentially translates as the ‘meeting place of two waters’, the Northern Wairoa River, where it meets the Kaipara Harbour. It is a bustling rural support town and home to Ruawai College, one of the three large secondary schools in the district, as well as a kindergarten and primary school. Downtown consists of a busy bedding manufacturer, a veterinary practice, supermarket and a variety of shops and cafes, with a dominant processing plant for the area’s kumara growers. A plastics manufacturer makes up the balance of industrial activity in the town. There is a distinct topographical change here, as the town and district encompass some 21,000 acres of flat land. The area of the whole of The Flat was known as the Tokatoka Swamp at first, and later settlement created individual names, Ruawai, Naumai and others, with the land balloted

In the centre of Ruawai is the Kaipara Kai office, part of the Kaipara District Council’s Kickstart programme aimed at making the region a cornucopia of horticultural production. Ruawai has around 8,300 hectares of alluvial soils situated in useful proximity to Auckland. With further drainage and irrigation development, which is straightforward as the hill
country is suitable for water storage to support the flats, this land stands ready to take over the mantle from Pukekohe as New Zealand’s next market garden district. ¢

Toitu te whenua, toitu te moana, toitu te tangata If the land is well, if the sea is well, the people with thrive. It is with real pleasure that I wish everyone in Kaipara a very safe and happy Christmas and New Year. 2020 has had many highlights for me as Chair of Northland Regional Council and as your Kaipara Representative. A dual highlight this year was the receiving of the crown funding for the remediation of the Kaipara Harbour. This funding saw the signing of a co governance agreement with Kaipara Uri members which will enable western science and matauranga Maori to work in unison, provide employment, keep our soils where they need to be, and save our precious ecosystems that co-exist in the harbour. NRC’s second year of Environmental Awards although initially held virtually this year due to Covid provided the opportunity to showcase and recognise the great work that our communities are doing to improve and sustain our environment. Councils, Tangata Whenua and agencies worked exceptionally well together, making sure that communities were well looked after. Northland Regional Council throughout the year have continued with the very important and busy environmental work that they do so well. There is certainly lots to do and as an organisation we appreciate the support and assistance that is so willingly given by our constituents. We will all be back in 2021 well rested and ready to continue to support our environment and communities. Embracing all the opportunities and challenges that come our way.

Go west for a warm welcome u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville has always been a town of differences, aside from the mainstream. As orderly settlements on the east coast were established by the British government, the kauri forests and gumfields of this part of New Zealand were settled by adventurers and fortune seekers of many cultures. Surrounded by the Nonconformist Albertland settlements of the Kaipara Harbour, and driven by the trade in valuable kauri timber, shipbuilding and the gumfields, the area around Dargaville was settled before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. It became the first port of call for real pioneers such as Sir John Logan Campbell. Joseph Dargaville himself came later and built a purposefully designed town to bring order out of what he saw as frontier chaos. From Aratapu to Te Kopuru and beyond, hardy sailors, saw millers, bushmen and shipbuilders dominated the riverside, and trade between Dalmatian immigrants, local Maori, Irish, Scots and English settlers and more was booming. Dargaville, himself of French-Irish heritage, developed a town that would weld this industry into a focal point. Docks and mills sprung up, and fortunes were made. Today, Dargaville enjoys a place at the crossroads of the land, river and sea, experiencing a renaissance

Dargaville also forms the gateway to the Waipoua Forest, the rugged and beautiful Ripiro Coast and
the harbour mouth dunes and scenery of the Pouto Peninsula. Recently voted one of New Zealand’s friendliest towns to visit, it’s a great stop-off on your tour of the north. Beachcomb for shipwrecks, explore local history or just enjoy the slower, more relaxed pace of life. ¢

A perfect example of this trend is found in the village of Tangowahine, just a few kilometres inland from Dargaville on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River. Here, Kat Kalynchuk and her partner Ewen have given up Whangarei urban life to pursue an ever more popular Kiwi dream. “Both affordability and space were big deciding factors in moving to Tangowahine,” says Kat. “We didn’t want to live right on top of our neighbours, and our overall goal is to be fully self-sustainable and off the grid. For that, we needed some space.” Coming from a flatting situation, part of the serendipity of finding a two and a half acre, four-bedroom brick and tile homestead in their price range was also finding jobs in Dargaville, removing the need for a commute. “Previously, we had been flatting with a friend, which was a great situation as we all got along fabulously, but the space was very small. It’s great to be out of town and in a space where
p Kat and Ewen are now homeowners turning their piece of Kaipara paradise into a sustainable home for the future
we aren’t living right on top of our neighbours. Now we have the space to have friends come and visit and stay. “In the same price range as the large house and acreage we purchased in Tangowahine, we would only be able to secure a modest home in Whangarei with a floor plan of half the space, and maybe a small yard.”
Fortunately, some things that Kat and Ewen wanted already came with the house and land, like tank water and an effluent field. Some of the additions they plan on making are filtered grey water tanks for irrigation, large edible veggie gardens, solar energy for full self-sustainable power and a few animals a season. ¢

The complex of dune lakes nestled just beyond the coastline northwest of Dargaville has always been a place of natural beauty, but the Kai Iwi Lakes and the nearby wild seacoast have also been the site of battles and shipwrecks. It’s a fascinating place to visit, and a tourist hotspot all summer long. This part of the country was first settled by the great Polynesian navigator Nukutawhiti, who sailed the oceangoing waka Mamari across the South Pacific to land in the Hokianga Harbour. The waka carried on south, falling foul of bad weather and becoming perhaps the first vessel wrecked on the dangerous Ripiro Coast, just south of the lakes at Omamari. In colonial times, skirmishes between the Kaipara-dwelling Ngati Whatua people and their northern neighbours the Ngapuhi erupted into full conflict. The taua (war party) of Ngapuhi leader Pokaia headed south, planning to stop at the lakes to take on fresh water. Ngati Whatua warriors, led by Taoho, rangatira of Te Roroa,

A sporting year of progress u by Andy Bryenton
In a year when sporting matches and tournaments were disrupted by Covid, Dargaville’s sporting coaches and administrators have a lot to be proud of. Advancements in sport and recreation have shared the spotlight with major milestones there. Apart from memorable victories and matches in rugby, field hockey, Sevens, netball, football and many more codes, the theme for 2020 has been celebrating the past and building for the future. That’s building in the literal sense, as new facilities for recreation and sports have been popping up all over during the tumultuous months of 2020, providing relief after the tedium of lockdown for many. It was the Northland Rugby Union’s centennial year. Dargaville rolled out the welcome mat at Pioneer Rugby Park during field days, hosting an epic match that proved to be the last commemorative event before Covid entered the frame. Nevertheless, the park has been the focus of intensive upgrade plans, with a new digital scoreboard on the way, new lighting planned out, and the ultimate aim of crafting a new spectator’s stand. The end goal was to create a multi-sport hub for recreation and competition, attracting international and national level games to Dargaville. Right next door is proof of the concept; Sportsville, the major development which has changed the face of codes like tennis and netball locally. With a new clubroom and powerful lights, this space has been well-utilised beyond the scope originally envisioned and is now an invaluable asset to many sports.

Phone Patrick Lumby: 027 201 8625 p Dargaville’s sporting community has seen big advancements in facilities this year, with more plans on the way to boost cross-code cooperation and encourage more engagement
Two of the biggest builds of the year have been in the field of cycling, with new adherents to life on two wheels popping up all over. Harding Park, situated on Dargaville’s museum hill, has been revitalised with a series of downhill mountain biking trails, graded from novice to expert. These wind down the hillside with banked corners and jumps to provide thrills, and are already extremely popular with locals of all ages. A pump track, designed for both BMX style bikes and scooters, has been crafted and installed right next to the town’s acclaimed skatepark, which has also been upgraded with new lights. Meanwhile, surf lifesavers have been delighted by the opening of a new hub
• Water blasting • All types of vacuum loading • Septic & Water Tank Cleaning • Grease Traps, Cesspits, Ponds • Storm Water & Wash Down Sumps • Drain Unblocking, Jetting
for their activities at Baylys Beach, part of the town’s new community centre. The public was adamant that a proper base for these lifesavers was needed as part of the coastal community. Now, the scope for both training new team members and enjoying surf sports has been expanded as a consequence. ¢

Taste of the wild west u by Andy Bryenton
Wild West Worcester sauce is a bit of a local delicacy here in the Kaipara. A family business launched by Katie Le Noel, which has grown to scoop 21 culinary awards and delight taste buds wherever people appreciate good food, this success story is one you can savour. Katie says that she chose Worcestershire sauce, the manylayered black sauce with the distinctive taste, due to an old family recipe. “Worcestershire practically goes on every type of food and in everything you cook. It just creates a massive depth of flavour in anything you put it in or on. I got the recipe 34 years ago from my mother-in-law Elsie Le Noel, when I got married. I have pretty much made it ever since then and everyone loved it! I always had a running list of people I had to give it to whenever I made a batch.” With no one else locally focussing on this aromatic sweet black sauce, especially hot chilli variants, that popularity grew into a thriving business. However, it’s definitely a very unusual, long and labour intensive process to make each and every bottle of sauce. More than 30 years of refining the recipe, 14 hours of hand brewing and 18 months of infusing create one single bottle. “This ageing process makes for a smoother richer more flavoursome

Worcester,” says Katie. “We still make it the way Nana did. That’s why it takes so good; no shortcuts.” What began with the home kitchen and a special exemption has grown into a commercial kitchen, and the life of ‘brand ambassadors’ for the family, not just for Wild West Worcester but also the Kaipara region. She’s quick to point out that there’s more to Dargaville than tasty kumara, though her sauces are a fine companion for them. It’s a big difference in lifestyle to
her pre-Worcestershire days. “Life was a bit quieter,” says Katie. “We really appreciate the local community, each and every person that buys our sauces. Knowing it’s everywhere, having it on the dining table all over the country is pretty cool. Whanau and friends have always encouraged us to keep going and be our biggest supporters. Step by step, we are getting more and more well known. “We want to be the go-to bottle in every Kiwi kitchen!” ¢

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
Making a small town difference u by Andy Bryenton
“People who contribute voluntarily are the heart of a town. They benefit the whole community by their actions, and it’s not arduous work. It’s good fun with lifelong friends.” It’s an opinion on small town New Zealand life that’s hard to disagree with, and not only because it comes from Dargaville’s recently-awarded Citizen of the Year, Brian Burnett. He’s been a volunteer in many aspects of Dargaville life for more than five decades. However, he’s quick to point out, when questioned about the volunteering ethos, that he’s only one of many. “You don’t necessarily get into these things with the idea of community service, but more often just out of personal interest and enjoyment or because of your friends,” he says. “For example, I became a leader in the Scouting movement after enjoying my years as a Boy Scout, and when I followed my own kids through education I signed up for the school board of trustees. It seemed a natural progression to lend a hand.” That might be putting it lightly, as Brian holds Scouting’s highest honour, the Silver Tui, for leadership roles

p Dargaville’s citizen of the year, Brian Burnett, who was awarded alongside fellow Kaipara Citizens of the Year Vanessa Fulton and Bert Sainsbury of Mangawhai
up to the highest level since 1968. Skills learned here in fundraising and organisation were no doubt transferable to the many, many clubs and teams he’s volunteered for during the decades. The question comes to mind of how he’s managed to balance all this activity with career and family. “I’ve always had good staff I could trust, and that gave me flexibility. In many cases, my family have been with me in volunteering, and they have always been supportive.”

Brian encourages people keen to help their community to volunteer doing something they love. “I’m very grateful for the honour given to me in this year’s Citizen’s Awards,” he says. “This was unexpected but truly appreciated. I think that while the recognition is valued, the true reward of volunteering is meeting so many great people, and many lifelong friends. I’ll remember this award with humility and gratitude.” ¢

KDC volunteer firefighters When Brian Armstrong joined Fire and Emergency NZ as a volunteer he was looking for the chance to give back to his community. That was 30 years ago with the Whangarei Fire Service as it was known then. After serving 14 years there he took a break before rejoining when he moved to Dargaville. “I wanted to help the community again, that’s what made me go back to it,” says Brian. “You can do all sorts of community things. This was something that excited me as well, being on the front line.” Brian is Acting Water and Waste Manager at Kaipara District Council, and leads the Operations Support Team for Dargaville Fire and Emergency. The Operations Support Team does everything the rest of the crew does except work that requires breathing apparatus. Brian says there’s great comradery among the team. “We’re a big family. We support each other, not only in FENZ, but whenever someone needs a helping Being a volunteer with FENZ requires commitment to train 3 nights per month and members are on call one in three weekends. “The hardest thing is when you turn up at a scene and it is someone you know - it makes you want to focus on the individual rather than looking at the bigger picture. MAKE IT YOUR DREAM HOME
A strong demand for lifestyle u by Andy Bryenton
In a year of ups and downs spurred by the Covid pandemic, property in the Kaipara has remained buoyant, with the cautious resurgence after New Zealand weathered its only full lockdown swept away in late-year enthusiasm. Mangawhai on the east coast remains one of the fastest-growing seaside towns in the country as Aucklanders look north for respite from the city’s perennial traffic congestion and find Orewa, Snells Beach and Matakana full to bursting. Prices have kept pace, meaning that the attraction of the ‘heartland’ towns across the top of the Kaipara Harbour has also come to the fore. New developments in Mangawhai are coming to fruition, with a debate about the changing character of the village making the news. However, more options have also opened up in towns like Paparoa, where a fresh mixed development offering retirement and rural-edge lifestyle living has proven a hit. Real estate professionals advise that the days of rock-bottom bargains for lifestyle acreage may be gone. However, that good value for money is still more than achievable for those who wish for some extra space, scenic views or even harbour and beach adjacency. The differential between prices in Auckland and prices in towns like Dargaville and Maungaturoto, or quieter seaside settlements such as Pahi or Tinopai means that for those who don’t need to commute to the metropolis for work, there’s leverage

in selling up to adopt a quieter pace of life. Often, there’s change leftover for lifestyle passion projects like gardens, boats and classic cars as well. That being said, not all those who have managed to say goodbye to the gridlock are retirees seeking the sunnier northern climate. Young families are also considering the shift to this locale, mindful of the opportunity for their children to grow up with the beach and forest nearby. There seems to be little chance of stopping the trend; the Kaipara is a secret no more.

MAKE IT YOUR DREAM HOME
The lifestyle dream
PAINT APPLICATION SPECIALISTS WITH COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL AND DOMESTIC PROJECTS
u by Andy Bryenton
The term ‘dream home’ is one that’s been tarnished by overuse in real estate advertising for decades, but the reality is still at the core of Kiwi aspirations. While everyone’s dream differs, there’s a good reason why, right now, many people are looking north to make theirs a reality. If that dream includes a quarteracre or more, a solid, spacious home to raise a family in and a short trip to outdoor adventures on the weekends, then the city and its suburbs no longer deliver. Space constraints and rising prices have made the inaccessibility of the original working New Zealanders’ property ‘birthright’ in the national news, with the government facing criticism for lack of control over the housing market. At the other end of the spectrum, retirees are looking for a break from commuter traffic, crowds and modern stresses; a change of pace back to the ‘good life’ from earlier decades. With all this in mind, a move north to the Kaipara makes perfect sense. With the median house price in Auckland topping $1 million for the first time in November, and the median price averaging from $300,000 to $850,000 in the Kaipara, fiscal concerns are sorted. We’re talking character properties with sea views, acreage or attached sheds, ponds, stables and workshops for those top-end dollars here as well. If you’re concerned that a home here may run long on the rustic charm but short on cosmopolitan comforts, remember that the cash difference

Switched on, off the grid
TIMBER SHEDS & SLEEP-OUTS
u by Andy Bryenton
It’s a hot concept in this sustainable new age; getting away from it all and living off the grid, untethered to the modern systems of water, power and sanitation that are required for highdensity city environments. The good news is, pioneers in the field of off the grid living have gone before, coming up with ways to coexist with nature while still retaining the modern health, hygiene and efficiency of 21st-century technology. The first of those pioneers were actual pioneers, and some of the things that they used, such as wood fires with water heaters attached, are fine additions to the modern off the grid home. Solar power is one technology our ancestors could only have dreamed of. It fits well with the 250 sunshine hours each month we can count on in a Kaipara summer. Advances in battery and solar photovoltaic cell science have made it affordable to get off the grid when it comes to power. There are also low-drain appliances and gaspowered options to reduce the load further. There are several great solar power specialists in the area who can help set up an off the grid system, as well as remote solar pumping stations for that other staple of life, fresh water. Getting off the grid with water is already

Ph: 09-438-4660 Email: sales@timbersheds.co.nz p Solar power, sometimes augmented by wind, is becoming more of a practical consideration and less of a future technology as batteries and panels improve
a reality for many farms and houses in our region. The main thing to watch out for? Install filters and UV lights to purify your water, as it will not be treated by a municipal water plant or come with added chlorine or fluoride. That, for some, is a bonus in itself. The best part about being off the grid in the Kaipara is that you don’t
have to be off the most important grid of all. Wireless internet providers specialising in rural applications can usually link even the most remote parts of the district, meaning that top tips on sustainable gardening, beekeeping and livestock management can come via the web, while you enjoy the rest of life at a less digital pace. ¢

Opportunity abounds u by Andy Bryenton
Year after year the Kaipara District continues to perform as one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. With the influx of new residents and citizens comes opportunity, both to establish new businesses and to carry on existing brands with history. ‘The population of Kaipara District has grown strongly over the past 15 years, and growth has been particularly strong in the past five years, reaching a population of 24,100 in 2019,’ states a report commissioned by the Kaipara District Council. ‘Population growth is projected to pick up from 2022 onwards, with the district growing steadily to reach a population of 32,600 in 2051. Kaipara District’s population is projected to age rapidly over the next 30 years, with the number of residents aged 65 years and over growing from 5,600 in 2019 to 12,200 in 2051.’ It means two things for those seeking to move to the region to establish not just a life, but a thriving business. Firstly, that the population will grow, providing more customers, and secondly, that many of these

people will be retirees from more cosmopolitan areas. That leaves many niches open for business types not yet represented in the Kaipara’s smaller towns. By corollary, many of our own stalwarts of the main street will reach retirement age during the next few years, and already options exist in our region to become the owner-operator of a locally famous name-brand business. The option to expand with fresh ideas is right there, alongside the affordability of many such business opportunities. Smaller communities are also switching on to the ‘shop local’ message, meaning that a niche or boutique establishment can enjoy a certain amount of exclusivity, providing that customer service is paramount. The other exciting option for those seeking to relocate and begin a

MAKE IT YOUR DREAM HOME

Dreams outside four walls u by Andy Bryenton
We hear a lot about dream homes, and see so many ideas for perfect houses and interiors, kitchens and modern bathrooms. For many people, the allure of moving away from the city is to pursue dreams that don’t happen inside conventional walls. Make no mistake a beautiful home is easy to accomplish here, and with all the personal touches that one could desire. It’s just that the ability to achieve more space, and freedom from the encroachment of neighbours, means the scope to dream a bit bigger. For example, many people buying in the country want to fulfil the dream of the ‘good life’, exactly as in the vintage television programme from Britain. A chicken coop, a small number of livestock animals such as sheep or cattle, a large vegetable garden and solar and wind power are all within your grasp, so long as you choose the right space and follow some simple guidelines. Experts in farming and lifestyle block cultivation are plentiful in our small towns, and supermarket ad cards often feature ducks, kunekune piglets, goats, lambs and calves for sale, along with chickens and quail.
Another popular choice is to build your dream garage and workshop out in the countryside; a place where no amount of hammering, drilling, welding and the occasional bit of swearing about a stuck bolt will both the neighbours. Rural properties often come with big sheds and garages. If a homestead once housed the farmer’s ute, quad bikes, tractors and family sedan, there’s lots of room to install woodworking or metal fabrication equipment. Some locals even build a mechanic’s hoist to help work on their classic cars and motorbikes. There’s a thriving classic and hot rod community here and mechanics who know American bikes and older cars. How about your dream stable? There’s a big equestrian community too, and plenty of great grazing land along with places to ride. Artists may want to establish their dream
Fulfil the dream of the ‘good life’
p It’s not just a house that makes a home. Many people who have chosen to move to the Kaipara have done so to fulfil dreams that require sheds, barns, stables, studios, training areas and forges
studio with inspirational views, peace, quiet and lots of room to craft huge canvases or install a potter’s wheel and kiln. Certainly, there are ample art groups and galleries where finished works will be valued and appreciated. Maybe your dream involves room for
a big boat and trailer, all the tools to keep it shipshape, and a huge outdoor barbecue area where your catch can become a convivial dinner? As space in the city becomes a premium luxury, fulfilling dreams outside the confines of the home is part of the charm of the Kaipara. ¢

MAKE IT YOUR DREAM HOME
Basics first — grand designs later u by Liz Clark
We all dream of having the perfect garden to greet friends and family when they come to visit, especially when it’s a new or relocated home you’ve just moved into. Before you go rushing off to the garden centre — hold off and start with the basics first. Once your driveway and pathways have been established, along with decks and patios, take a look at where your outdoor living will mainly take place. In most cases, the outdoor living/entertainment areas are sited next to the deck to create that well-used ‘indoor/outdoor flow’ effect. Set in your building blocks with retaining walls, raised garden beds, paving and steps, where needed if your section has a sloping situation. Once these are in place, then consider the soil as the next step towards your landscaping project. The quality of your soil matters; most, if not all, newly-developed sites have been removed down to the clay level. Good-quality topsoil is an essential part of planning for any future plantings. Ensure before bringing in any
soil; drainage issues are addressed. Poor drainage means your plants will fail to thrive and die from root rot. Next, look at aspects such as the prevailing wind, proximity of adjoining properties and the orientation of your home. In most cases, urban living now involves much closer proximity to adjoining properties with shared fencing and neighbouring homes being within a few metres of each other. Careful planning is essential to create a successful landscaping project. Consider engaging the services of a landscape consultant who can assist with your site and planting layout plans. If you’re unable to use the services of a landscape consultant, alternative information sources can be found on the internet. There is a multitude of information sources available covering everything from basic concept layouts to installing retaining walls, fencing
The quality of your soil matters
and trellis as well as planting layouts. Consider the style of garden you’re most interested in for example a country cottage, contemporary low-maintenance, subtropical or formal look. Avoid a haphazard mix and match approach when it comes to planting. Not all plants will suit the conditions
and location of your site. When looking at trees, look at the eventual height and width of the cultivar it will grow to at maturity. For instance, you would not want to plant a tall-growing tree in a small courtyard. Keep it simple, get the basics right and you’ll enjoy a thriving garden in the future. ¢

EDUCATION
High school and tertiary education In New Zealand children must either be enrolled in school or be home-schooled between the ages of 6 and 16 years. Parents and carers are legally required to make sure that their child goes to school every day the school is open. Under the Education and Training Act 2020, parents and carers of children between 6 and 16 years old can be prosecuted if their child is away from school without a good reason. Public high schools in Kaipara include Otamatea and Dargaville High Schools, Ruawai and Rodney College that are all co-educational. There are also various private schools. Dargaville High School is a decile three school catering for students from years 9 to 13. Many former students have gone on to great success in the worlds of science, politics, business and sport. The aim of the school is to provide quality education to every student who attends. Students are encouraged to develop and enhance their talents to reach their full potential. Ruawai College has a focus on the pursuit of knowledge and learning with a high value of excellence, community and service to others. Students are
encouraged to seek after learning for the sake of their wellbeing while the staff aim to inspire individuals to be lifelong learners, to be respectful, resilient and responsible citizens. Otamatea High School caters from years 7 to 13. The school sees students travel from Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Mangawhai, Waipu, Matakohe, Ruakaka and Tinopai. The curriculum covers a wide variety of cross-curricular year 9 and 10 programmes and senior students can also complete courses outside school, gain valuable work experience and work towards national qualifications at the same time. Students at Rodney College in Wellsford are encouraged to achieve personal excellence in their academic, sporting, extra-curricular, social, cultural and leadership activities. They are highly motivated and active participants in the learning process, with the view of learning as a lifelong activity. New Zealand has a wide range of tertiary education options. There are

HEALTH
Providing the best of care u by Paul Campbell
Health service and support are of paramount importance in every New Zealand community, and Kaipara is a flagship example of excellent community care provision. Leading the charge as always is St John. Providing emergency ambulance services to nearly 90% of New Zealanders in 97% of New Zealand’s geographic locations, Kaipara is covered from ambulance bases in Maungaturoto and Dargaville on-call around the clock. With St John leading the way in emergency provision, Kaipara has a portfolio of complementary health services. Manaia Health PHO Ltd is long established as a Primary Health Organisation within the Northland District Health Board First level primary health care is provided by 22 general practices, 20 pharmacies and four Maori health organisations. In Dargaville, health provision is overlooked by the Kaipara Community Health Trust, which emerged from a movement to save the Dargaville Hospital from a government closure. The upgraded hospital now hosts a comprehensive medical centre. As in any rural area getting to health services is a consideration. Kaipara

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of city living has made Kaipara a magnet for those seeking a quieter life in retirement and the district has top-class facilities to make that choice and easy one. When it’s time to sit back and follow perhaps long-neglected interests, what better place to settle down than on the shores of the county’s biggest harbour, with its twin coasts to the Tasman and the Pacific, there is room to breathe and to get out and be active too. The first stop on SH12 from Brynderwyn is Maungaturoto with its extensive and well-planned Riverview Retirement Village, with self-contained units with full support facilities. These units are available to lease and to purchase, a mixture of flats and twobedroom dwellings. It is notable too for the multimilliondollar dementia unit that will open its 14 units in 2021, after several years in the making with massive community fundraising added to a government grant. The dementia unit is, in fact, the first of a four-stage development plan by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust to progress to a hospital facility with full services. Moving on through State Highway 12, and Dargaville represents the perfect place to enjoy the golden years. Within striking distance of Auckland and Whangarei city centres, it provides the best of town and country. Moreover,
you’ll also find lots to see and do and plenty of clubs and groups of many and varied interests. The hospital on the hill is also an important consideration. Dargaville Grey Power Association Inc, Dargaville Community Development Board Inc and Northland Inc are looking towards a new modern retirement village for Dargaville. However, there are already attractive choices for retirees of any age. Dargaville has a number of retirement and community housing options that remain integrated in the community among friendly neighbours and close to amenities. ¢

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT
Enjoy the freshest and best STAY AFLOAT u by Andy Bryenton
Local cuisine is always a good reason to travel, and uncovering the best and freshest a region can offer is an adventure worth sharing with friends and family. This summer, if you’re journeying through the Kaipara, try some of our own favourites. Named for a vast harbour, it’s no surprise that this part of New Zealand is famed for its seafood. Flounder and oysters fresh from the sea are a real treat lightly fried or with a crisp batter, served with a seasonal salad or enjoyed out of crisp newsprint paper with hot chips. Likewise, our local kina, crays and all kinds of fresh fish can be enjoyed as high cuisine or as a beachside snack. There’s also the option of casting a line in the water to try your own luck; the fishing here is superb. No mention of Kaipara dining would be complete without mentioning the burgeoning viticulture industry here. With bountiful sunshine hours and unique soils, vineyards like Mangawhai’s Brooke Lane produce one of a kind pinot gris, chardonnay and rose selections you can enjoy from the cellar door and pair with other local delicacies. Many offer summertime visits to taste their vintages and appreciate the idyllic scenery. Just down the road in Mangawhai, you’ll find one of the nation’s top butchers. Dan at the Mangawhai Meat Shop has a swag of awards for the best and most creative sausages in New Zealand, so pop in for some barbecue action. From east to west, the Kaipara boasts cafes and restaurants of renown, from the cosmopolitan and chic to the rustic and old fashioned. A hearty tavern meal at an historic inn one night, pizza on the beach the next, and a hot espresso for some getup-and-go the next day, before more adventures? You’ve got it.

p Whether you like silver service, cafe ambience, takeaways on the beach or a barbecue with friends, Kaipara has everything you need
We couldn’t go all this way without mentioning a famous addition to world cuisine from this slice of New Zealand. Kaipara is famous for its kumara, with Ruawai and Dargaville hailed as joint capitals of the tasty, knobbly treat. Whether part of a traditional hangi, fried up as chips with garlic aioli, mashed with parmesan cheese and butter, or roasted with lamb or chicken, there’s no more iconic flavour around these parts. Grab a bag before you leave, or try some kumara recipes at your local restaurants, where chefs have turned the humble tuber into all manner of flavourful dishes. ¢
