This year’s applicants were asked to explore the issues of sustainability in the red meat sector, and then present their solutions for farms, processing and in-market. Silver Fern Farms chief executive Simon Limmer said it is clear that there is a real belief from these young people in the future for our natural grass-fed red meat. “We want to thank all of the applicants who put forward their ideas. It has been great to hear the innovative ideas and passion from young people who have their sights set firmly on creating a sustainable future for the red meat sector. “Through our scholarship programme, we are creating pathways for young people to have a rewarding career in our industry.” During three years, Silver Fern Farms has invested $90,000 into the programme, supporting 18 young people. Mr Limmer believes this is working as one of the inaugural scholarship recipients is now on the Silver Fern Farms graduate programme. “During the course of the three years, we have supported their ambitions to help the red meat industry with ideas ranging from industry biosecurity challenges, the development of food technology processes to extend the shelf life and flavor of red meat, regenerative
cropping, selling the story of New Zealand’s natural artisan agriculture to the world, as well as challenging the industry to think big and be bold.” This year’s scholarship recipients William Robertson (upper North Island), Lucy Rowe (western North Island), Phoebe Topp (eastern North Island), Teagan Graham (upper South Island), Matthew Day (lower South Island) and Kate Denzel (Judge’s choice) each received $5,000 to go toward their careers in the red meat sector. Applicants require a Silver Fern Farms Co-operative shareholder to support their bid for a scholarship. That gives farmer shareholders the opportunity to encourage young people who want to progress their careers in the red meat sector. Silver Fern Farms co-chair Rob Hewett was pleased to present the scholarships in front of 300 farmer suppliers and shareholders at Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture conference in Christchurch. “The Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships are always a highlight for us,” said Mr Hewett. “Discovering the passion and talent emerging in our communities gives us great confidence that the future of farming and the communities where we live and work, is safe in the hands of our young leaders.”

Horticulture added to Ahuwhenua Trophy competition by Denise Gunn
The Ahuwhenua Trophy competition will receive an extra boost with the introduction of horticulture to the event. The Minister for Maori Development Hon Nanaia Mahuta and the Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor said bringing horticulture into the prestigious Ahuwhenua Trophy competition is a significant milestone for Maori. “Up until now, the competition has only involved sheep and beef and dairy, but with the rapid growth and investment by Maori in horticulture — it is now part of the competition,” said Minister Mahuta. Government financial support for the event will also increase. Minister O’Connor said he was pleased to announce Te Puni Kokiri and Ministry for Primary Industries as platinum sponsors of the Excellence in Maori Horticulture Award in 2020. “Part of this sponsorship will include 12,000 tree seedlings supplied by the Minginui Nursery, and made possible through our One Billion Trees Programme.” The competition is designed to promote excellence in Maori farming and horticulture. A special cup, an exact replica of trophies designed by New Zealand artist Goldie, has been crafted especially for next year’s event. The creation of the trophy has been an international collaborative effort between The Village Goldsmith in Wellington, Te Puia — the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua and Englandbased firm Ottewill. In just seven years, Lyall Field and Trish Lowe have turned their beekeeping hobby into a thriving business. by Denise Gunn
T
he couple first ventured into keeping bees with the purchase of 10 hives. “We started small, learnt the ropes and gradually increased colonies,” said Lyall. “In hindsight, this has been the best option. If we had started out big, we would most likely have lost hives and money.” Now with more than 500 hives, Lyall and Trish are still expanding their Taranaki Bees business. The couple’s apiaries are spread from Pihama in the south to Matau in the north, with some migratory hive movements into the King Country during the Manuka season. Trish said they treat landowners with
the utmost respect and try to be an as little inconvenience as possible. “We have health and safety documentation and practices in place to alleviate any concerns they might have and to help us keep safe. These principles are paying us back now, with good rapport and word-of-mouth helping us gain more land access.” A boilermaker by trade, Lyall has worked as a contractor around New Zealand. He is currently a contract shutdown planner for the petroleum industry, and his skillsets are wellutilised in beekeeping. Trish’s career as a laboratory technician, in the environmental and petroleum industries, spans more than 20 years. She

continues to work in this field on a casual basis. Attending local bee club meetings, reading and researching keep the couple’s knowledge up-to-date. They have both completed disease conformity courses, and Trish has also completed a Telford Certificate in Apiculture. Taranaki Bees run both the Italian and the darker Carniolan honeybee. Lyall and Trish have found the Carniolan more suited to the higher altitude sites, with attributes that suit Taranaki’s challenging climate. “Our main honey varieties are Manuka, Rewarewa, Clover, Bush Blend and Kamahi,” said Lyall. Currently, Taranaki Bees sell approximately three-quarters of their honey in bulk drums to overseas honey buyers. The remainder is sold to retail stores in New Zealand. Beeswax is also sold in various sizes, ranging from one to eight kilograms. “We have also started a fundraising initiative for local organisations,” said Trish. Lyall and Trish are fascinated with the complexity of the honeybee. “They have amazing capabilities as a collective and the ways they communicate is fascinating.” “We believe there is still so much more to learn about them. Recent studies show that bees can count and can recognise beekeepers faces — this doesn’t surprise us at all. “The fact that they produce many useful products such as propolis, wax, venom and royal jelly prove how valuable and clever they are.”

Lyall said bees require intervention in order to keep them healthy and productive. “The varroa mite and natural food sources are our biggest challenges to good bee health. “We manage the varroa mite two to three times a year through both mainstream and organic treatments. The hive-carrying ability in the apiary area is closely monitored to ensure we don’t have too many hives in one place. In the bigger picture, it is far less stress for bees and beekeeper to spread hive numbers around to ensure they are getting enough natural sustenance.” Money and markets have also been challenging. To keep the costs of reliable equipment down the couple builds a lot
themselves and spread growth across a few years. Their first commercial production of honey aligned with an MPI change in the Manuka standard. It had a massive impact on all New Zealand honey. “This was both a positive in the sense of being a learning around debt burden and keeping it low. Also a negative in how the international price for honey is very low, which is not helped by faux honey derived from corn/rice syrups and the likes.” Working among the peaceful surroundings of the countryside is

Growing up as a townie, Trish Rankin didn’t have an opportunity to set foot on a farm until 2001.
S
ince then, Trish and her husband Glen have worked on dairy farms in several regions around New Zealand. Trish is also involved in multiple roles within the dairy sector and community. Her commitment to dairying, passion for on-farm environmental work, and volunteer roles were recognised recently with the 2019 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year award. Trish was raised in Christchurch, and later Greymouth, when her family shifted to the West Coast. At that stage, she had never considered working in the dairy industry.
“My father was a policeman and Mum owned a shop,” she said. With her heart set on a teaching career, Trish trained to become a primary school teacher. She met Glen when he was working for AgriQuality in Greymouth. Glen had just completed a Taratahi dairy farming course and decided to move to Canterbury to take up a herd management position on an 800-cow farm. Trish secured a teaching position in Ashburton and began venturing out on the farm with Glen. “I had never been on a farm until Glen decided to go farming,” said Trish.

“While I stayed teaching full-time, I did take on the accounts, administration and human resources role in the background.” During the years Trish has selftaught or undergone training to cover calf-rearing, feed budgeting and human resources, cementing her on-farm skills. In 2015, with four children and trying to squeeze in her deputy principal position in Martinborough, as well as helping on the farm whenever possible, Trish and Glen decided to focus on becoming 50/50 sharemilkers. Their decision paid off as the following year the couple won the Northland Sharefarmer of the Year award. Between 2016 to 2018 Trish completed an agribusiness diploma, which helped further her farming knowledge. Trish said the biggest challenge she has faced during her dairy farming career has been learning how to be a business owner as well as a farmer. “To find a fair contract where the reward matches the risk as too often we undersell our skills, working hours and risk. As a sharemilker, you have a substantial amount of money in the farming business, but this is often overlooked by farm owners.” The Rankins have begun their third season sharemilking 450 cows for Maori Corporation Parininihi ki Waitotara in South Taranaki. They moved to South Taranaki with their four young sons at
the start of the 2017–18 season. Trish also teaches part-time at Opunake Primary School. As part of the Dairy Enviro Leaders programme, Trish chairs the Taranaki branch and finds it great for reality checking. “They are real farmers dealing with real issues and are passionate about being the best farmers they can be.” Trish is also a contractor to DairyNZ and assisted with putting together a Dairy Women’s Network module that was rolled out around the country. Other projects have included volunteering as the dairy farmer representative on NAIT’s Technical User Committee. She said this also helped to see how the system works from both sides. Last year Trish was elected on to the National Executive for the New Zealand Dairy Awards. “This is so special to me. Had it not been for entering those awards for the first time in 2013, we wouldn’t be where we are.” Trish maintains the major highlight of her involvement in the dairy industry and community is people. “When you are on-farm during the busy times, you feel like you’re a little bit alone. Getting along to discussion groups or attending meetings is a chance to put your head up and chat about things. “Mostly it’s great to hear your challenges are not yours alone.”

She is also working on a Kellogg Leaders research project, focussing on making waste more circular. “Buying a farm is a major priority, and we hope
to be able to do that, or move into an equity partnership to do that in the next year or two. “Taranaki feels like home, and we will be doing everything we can to make it our forever place.”

ENCOURAGING FARMSTRONG’S VISION by Ann van Engelen A group of ladies are learning the ropes of the shearing trade as they join together from different occupations to compete at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show to raise funds for Farmstrong.
“W
e want to support Farmstrong’s vision and get the word out there that there is help for farmers that are struggling,” says Maureen Chaffey. “We are from different industries and have never shorn before. It is very exciting, and we are extremely surprised by the amount of support we have. unreal.” Maureen was brought up on a sheep and beef farm and gained a diploma in wool and wool technology at university that led her into a career in the wool industry. “Growing up, I was always fascinated with all aspects of farming, and it was only natural to end up in the ag industry, and I have never looked back. I help clients increase the value of their wool with wool preparation and shearing regimes. When picking rams to breed from, we not only look at the wool fibre, but also the sheep’s structure for growing meat. “We need to continue preparing for the future of wool. People are thinking differently now and realise natural fibre is better for our health. Woollen products are becoming more sought after and clothes are now easier to care for, and the wool isn’t itchy like in the days gone by. “Wool carpets are so much better for our health as well as blankets — they are natural and warm, and wool doesn’t easily burn. “It keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. Consumers are very aware of environmental factors, and they want more natural products. Through Farmstrong we are seeing good things happening, including awareness and discussions and we are really excited to be involved,” says Maureen. “People are amazed that we are learning to shear a sheep as it is a very physical job, but there is so much more to it as well. “ You are working with a live animal and making their life easier by reducing the wool they have to carry, and they can grow better without the weight. It prevents lice and ‘cast sheep’, which is when they can’t get up due to the weight they are carrying, especially when they are pregnant. “Pre-birthing shearing also means the mother will seek shelter to have her lamb, meaning a better survival rate of newborns. Less wool means easy movement, and shearing doesn’t hurt the sheep — it helps them. “We are all so excited to be doing this and appreciate the support Farmstrong offer people. As they say on their website when you look after yourself, you are looking after your farm too.”

Blue sky thinking
The smart money on any upgrade to your home is on crunching the numbers, and in the case of photovoltaic solar, those numbers have been hotly debated. Here in New Zealand, the final verdict is that solar power is cost-effective, so long as 100 per cent of PV power is used on-site, and none is pumped back into the grid. That’s good news for those who want to sever ties with the wires and embrace rural views — like many of those building or renovating here in the Kaipara. Solar panels are proliferating across the country despite our government lagging behind other developed democracies in offering incentives and tax breaks for their implementation. At last count, the nation sported approximately 91 megawatts of solar power attached to homes and businesses, with 19Mw of that installed within the preceding year. The uptick has begun, and it’s being spurred on by large-scale projects such as the solar augmentation of Kaitaia College this year, where 368 panels now adorn the roofline. Kaitaia maybe a little further north, but Kaipara with its wealth of sunshine hours to match Nelson and Marlborough is also a prime spot to ditch the grid and adopt solar energy solutions. Between PV outfits for the roof, solarpowered pumps to channel water to
the tank, and the ability to mount solar panels to boats and campers, there are ample opportunities to turn the sun’s rays into real savings. Consider that a single panel averages at about $350 and that the turn-key price for a full three to four-kilowatt system has dropped by two thirds in the past decade. Kaipara uptake rates for solar power systems are trending at 50 per cent higher than the North Island average and well above the national average, thanks to a combination of mild weather, ease of access to the technology, and the practicality of going off-grid in our many isolated rural and coastal communities. As battery and PV tech improves, it’s well worthwhile to talk to your local solar experts and plan for a future without monthly power bills.

Part of this is because we are living in a post-television world. A hefty hard drive connected directly to a big 4K capable screen means stored content can be watched as well. The key here is to select a machine capable of very high-resolution output to match a very high-resolution screen. A crisp picture is only achieved with good data coming in as well as the ability to display it. Very large rooms may still benefit from a projector and screen, but with 65-inch flatscreens now the norm — it’s a matter of wall space! Then there’s the issue of sound. There are two ways to go here, and the modern soundbar is the easiest. Using clever
speaker technology (some even have moving speakers inside the bar) these devices bounce audio from the walls and ceiling to create a surround effect. The smartest learn the contours of your room and react accordingly. The other option is more time-intensive but very immersive; run cables through the ceiling to a battery of surround speakers for the cinematic experience. Finally, get the right chairs. If you sat through Avengers: Endgame in a cinema seat you’ll know the importance of comfort. Invest in some top recliners to make the home theatre a cut above the multiplex. Then you’re all set for this year’s Rugby World Cup. Moreover, as you’ll tell the rest of the family, ready for kid’s movies, panel shows and the nightly news.

Six generations of service Watching the tractor lights flash in the early hours of the morning, Jeff Rawson tries to imagine what farming would have been like in Taranaki six generations ago. “My ancestors have farmed across Taranaki from Whangamomona to Mokoia. Not so Krone, who, upon developing the most powerful maize and forage harvester the world has ever seen, took a look at its size and extreme capacity and called it the Big X. The Big X range spans medium to super-sized harvesting machines, but the stand-out top of the range is the Big X 1180. It refers to the staggering amount of horsepower generated by its 12-cylinder Liebherr-derived common rail engine, making it the most powerful in the world right now. With this big size comes some definite economies of scale; for example, the service intervals for components such as the oil filter and valves have been extended. It’s not so much the sheer brute force of Krone’s massive maize and forage machine, which makes it pack such a punch. It’s the clever additions driven by that V12 powerplant. Acknowledging the emerging use of
forage crops for biogas, Krone has made it possible to select variable chopping lengths from 4mm to 30mm, without having to touch the chopping drum. For livestock feed applications, where the chop is longer than in biofuel sourcing, Krone’s VariLOC technology does the business, augmented by an efficient corn conditioner. The Big X 1180 uses massive 305mm rollers, with slanted teeth to ensure that every kernel is cracked for greater digestibility. These hefty rollers are carried by an equally hefty spring assembly, and, of course, all powered by that giant Liebherr 12. Precision continues into the cab, with a suite of electronic aids to help fill
trailers more accurately and at greater speed. The operator has more control over the output stream than ever before, and additional data at hand includes the option to review the crop nutrient and moisture levels. The Big X even has eyes of its own; a photo-optical sensor in the middle of the maize header measures the maturity of the plant and automatically adjusts the length of cut. Between these and a range of other features designed to maximise fuel economy and minimise operator stress and fatigue, the Big X 1180 isn’t just powerful in terms of horsepower. It’s a powerful tool for making the most of a hard-earned crop, from the field to storage and use.

The grain of civilisation Maize is a huge part of the agricultural world a vital source of feed-out protein across our dairy and beef herds. It’s also a staple for the production of modern biofuels, with large areas of land in some nations now devoted to growing the crop just for the provision of liquid energy. Maize had been shaping human society for centuries before the advent of biodiesel and the modern farm. The plant itself, as traded for by European settlers in the New World, was not even a ‘natural’ cultivar, but a carefully bred version of the ancient wild plant teosinte. This plant may have been domesticated up to 6,000 years ago, according to evidence found in the Guila Naquitz Cave in Oaxaca, Mexico. Maize was the cornerstone of empires, as it was able to be harvested, stored and transported. Hun Hunahpu was the Mayan god of maize, and not surprisingly this deity was high up the celestial pecking order. Maize benefits from further selective breeding today. A worldwide programme seeks to produce drought-resistant strains to help feed African nations, for example. Other initiatives include creating stains which resist insect pests and deliver superior yield. Key players in this process are the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, modern-day ‘disciples of Hun Hunahpu’ who invest heavily into studying the genetics, propagation and improvement of maize worldwide.

Salute to the big tracks Our local contractors would be stuck without tracked machines, able to carry heavy hydraulic gear over all sorts of terrain to tackle the biggest demolition, earthmoving and building tasks. Moreover, where did the ubiquitous ‘caterpillar track’ come from? November 24, 1904. A muddy islet in the middle of the San Joaquin River Delta in California. Other American families were getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner. However, out amid the reeds, Benjamin Holt was unwilling to take a break from his new project. Traction engines of the day sunk into the soggy soil of this part of the country. His plan: replace the plank roads, which were used to support the iron monsters. He chose to chain together a series of
redwood slats between the wheels, making an ‘endless belt’. To say that it worked well is an understatement. By 1911, Holt had found a name for his machine, based on a photographer’s observation that it crawled over allterrain like a caterpillar. By 1925, Holt’s company had merged with that of his biggest rival in the manufacture of heavy equipment, CL Best to form the Caterpillar company. Fonterra directors’ election Nominations for the Fonterra Board of Directors’ Election opened on Friday, August 2, with an election to be held for two farmer-elected directors. This year Donna Smit and Andy Macfarlane retire by rotation. Both have confirmed that they are standing for reelection this year. The independent assessment process will run first with a nomination period of August 2–16. The independently assessed candidates will be rigorously assessed by an independent selection panel of three highly respected governance experts. This year, the panel comprises Tony Carter, chairman of Air New Zealand and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Joan Withers, chair of Mercury NZ and The Warehouse Group and Rob Campbell, chair of Skycity Entertainment Group, Summerset, Tourism Holdings and WEL Networks. Their role is to shortlist and recommend the best candidates to Fonterra’s shareholders. The Returning Officer will announce the Independent Nomination Process candidates on September 17. The Non-Assessment Process, where farmers can put themselves forward as a candidate for the board outside the Independent Assessment Process, will follow with the nomination period running from September 17–27. The Returning Officer will confirm all Farmer Directors’ Election candidates on September 30. The Directors’ Election will be held using the ‘first past the post’ system via postal and online voting by Fonterra shareholders.

Time to get that prostate check!
Should I take coenzyme Q10? I recently wrote about coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). I was surprised at the amount of contact from readers on the subject of CoQ10, especially from those wanting help dealing with the side effects of cholesterol-lowering medication. Studies show that statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 by as much as 50%. The side effects are so common they are called ‘statin myopathy’. The main side effects are muscle and tendon weakness, which can be felt as muscle stiffness and pain. The effect on nerves can impact memory and mood and comment about general lethargy. In most cases, two months of a quality CoQ10 will reduce these side effects and allow people to get the benefits of the medication without side effects. The chemical structure of CoQ10 allows it to move high energy electrons within our cell mitochondria where energy is made. CoQ10 collects these electrons and transfers them to an enzyme called ATP synthase to make the energy we need. I prescribe CoQ10 for several reasons most commonly for statin support. I also add CoQ10 for those fatigued without medical causes and for those with cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative problems. For example, I include
at least 100mg for those with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and higher doses for those with MS. For statins support, I use a high quality patented US CoQ10 and for inflammatory problems my mitochondrial support formula that includes high-grade Kaneka CoQ10 with a number of energy co-factors. It is interesting that the first improvement felt by those with these conditions is a lift in energy and general wellbeing. Those with inflammator y conditions, especially autoimmune problems, should be working to a personalised diet and supplement plan complementary to their regular medical treatment. There’s been a very favourable impression formed of the LDV brand here in New Zealand in recent years, with their no-nonsense, hard-working cargo vans becoming popular for those trades, which require reliable mass transit. Then came the T60 ute, a serious contender for king of the low-price modern light commercials. Now the line between work and play has been crossed.
LDV’s D90 sports utility is no crossover or mini version of the fourwheel-drive concept. It’s a full-sized, full-featured machine with seating for the entire family, up to seven people. They’ll be safe, too as the new LDV comes with a five-star ANCAP rating after passing a battery of intensive tests. It’s also available with real fourwheel drive, including automatically locking differentials, in an era when many vehicles pretend to have dirt and gravel chops — but come up short when it’s time to deliver. The biggest surprise is that it’s not a thumping big diesel under the hood,
but a 220 horsepower turbocharged petrol unit, developing 350Nm of torque to deliver a two-tonne towing capacity. That means no pesky road user charges, and plenty of ability to get the boat in the water at the same time, but a very different feel from benchmark SUVs like the venerable Land Cruiser. Engine stopstart and clever ECU setting keep the fuel bill low, though there is a ‘sport’ mode, which will doubtless have plenty of appeal. In this category of 4x4, the equation is all about the cost to benefits analysis. How much vehicle do you get for your dollars?
In the case of the D90, the answer is ‘plenty’, with touch screen infotainment, Apple and Android support, hill descent control, acres of interior space and topping it all, a five-year warranty. You could literally buy two of these, one in

each colour available (white or black), for the cost of some other seven-seaters out there. All while remembering that the D90’s stablemates are becoming a bit of a byword for reliable hard work, deep into the odometer band.
