ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

The awards encourage environmental stewardship, outstanding initiatives and sustainable development of the region’s natural resources. Five categories are included: The Te Taiao Me Te Pakihi — Environmental Leadership in Business, sponsored by Ngaruahine, Ngati Ruanui, Te Atiawa, Taranaki and Ngati Mutunga; Environmental Leadership in Dairy Farming, sponsored by Fonterra; Environmental Leadership in Land Management, sponsored by Dow AgroSciences; Environmental Action in the Community, sponsored by Methanex; and Environmental Action in Education,

sponsored by the Taranaki Daily News. Mr MacLeod said all sorts of people, businesses and organisations are investing a huge amount of time, money and hard work to continually improve the region’s high quality environment. “Each year the Council recognises a variety of projects and actions with Environmental Awards to showcase the tremendous effort put into environmental protection and enhancement by all sectors in Taranaki.” He said the award winners are always great examples of the Taranaki ‘get on and do it’ attitude. “Their efforts are reflected in the results reported in the council’s environmental monitoring, which shows that the Taranaki region enjoys a generally good and improving environment.” Since the programme began in 1993, the Taranaki Regional Council has presented 234 environmental awards. Up to three awards will be made in each category and each recipient will receive an engraved award and $300. Nominations close on August 30 and the awards will be presented in early November.

Farmers link up with technology Fonterra and Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) are teaming up to develop a new online technology solution designed to provide farmers with a view of their operation in one place. The two farmer-owned co-operatives are combining resources, knowledge and expertise to look at the best way to bring together a farmer’s milk production and quality data, herd data, pasture data, local weather forecasts and more into one easy-to-use online portal. Farmers will be able to see their private individual farm information in one place, allowing them to make faster and easier decisions about their farming operation. In developing the new online tool, Fonterra’s Farm Source team and LIC will be working with farmers to get their feedback on what they would like to see included. A group of 50 farmers nationwide were invited to trial a prototype this month and provide feedback. The aim is to make the tool available for all farmers, with the first release expected by the end of the year. Fonterra chief operating officer Farm Source Miles Hurrell said the tool is about responding to what farmers want — one place to access all the data sources they use, to improve on-farm performance. Currently farmers have lots of data sources, all developed in isolation,” said Mr Hurrell. “Farmers have asked for a way to bring

all those data sources together in one place. This would reduce the need for double entry of data by farmers. It will also give them the ability to benchmark their farm against others using aggregated data, leading to more productivity and profitability. The technology is aimed at helping farmers trim costs and utilise their resources as efficiently as they can.” LIC chief executive Wayne McNee said today’s farmers have so much information to try to consider and an everincreasing range of technology on offer. “Both can add huge value to a farming business, to support more informed decision making and improved profitability, but accessing and using the information to make decisions A new online technology solution for can be difficult. Farmers have farmers, developed by Fonterra and Livestock told us they want simplicity, Improvement Corporation, is being trialed this month they want one place to see all their records and information and they want it in real time.”

by Denise Gunn With 16 dairy farms and seven supporting drystock farms, Parininihi ki Waitotara (PKW) is Fonterra’s largest milk supplier in Taranaki and the 13th largest nationwide.

T

he leasehold of PKW’s No 2 Farm, located east of Hawera, was purchased in 2002. The farm covers 159 hectares with a 100-hectare milking platform. PKW takes sustainable farm management and land guardianship seriously. Twelve hectares of pines are established in gullies and on the farm’s steeper contour. Small areas of the farm are being retired and planted with natives. All waterways are fenced. The pride and passion taken in PKW’s farms

was recognised when the Taranaki-based Maori Incorporation’s No 2 Farm took out the supreme award in this year’s Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards (BFEA). Kaponga dairy farmer Roger Landers was appointed as PKW dairy farm supervisor in August 2014, overseeing six PKW farms. Roger and his wife Julie own a 240-cow dairy farm near Kaponga. Roger was actively farming right up to joining PKW and has promoted his farm assistant, Kevin Griffiths, to manage

his farm. “I still do some work on the farm — mainly weekend relief milking.” Overseeing KPW’s dairy sector is Shane Miles, as dairy operations manager. Andrew Gibson supervises the drystock and support blocks in his role as drystock operations manager. PKW’s No 2 Farm manager, Matt Kelbrick, took up his position in June

2014. Prior to Matt’s appointment, 50/50 sharemilkers operated the farm. BFEA judges praised the exceptional working relationship between Roger and Matt. “Matt and Roger have a fantastic relationship where they are not afraid to challenge one another to strive for excellence. Matt’s passion for the farm and animals is infectious and this alone

which has followed turnip crops, put in over the last 10 years or so,” he said. Approximately nine hectares of turnips are grown each year and close to eight hectares of maize is grown on a 16-hectare run-off, located near the farm. The 2015–16 season production was approximately 140,000kgMS from a herd of 325 cows. The year before, from 2014–15, the production figure reached 145,000kgMS. “The production in the previous season was approximately 113,000 milk solids, but a different herd, different cowshed and an in-shed feeder and molasses system installed at the same time as the cowshed was built,” said Roger. “This season the herd from this farm was sold, so they were dried off

early to maintain condition. Otherwise the production would have been similar to last year,” he said. BFEA judges said the farm’s infrastructure was excellent and allows for future expansion and growth of production. “The inclusion of an in-shed feeding system and brilliant management has seen production increase dramatically. The foundation is set for this property to keep pushing for greater things and maintain a great level of production.” Roger said in the short term, with the current low milk price, the aim is to try and get the costs down as much as possible. Eventually PKW plans to buy adjoining leasehold lands back and add these to the No 2 Farm’s operation.

Approximately 140,000kgMS was produced in the 2015/16 season from a herd of 325 cows motivates others around him to meet goals and targets. They have a close working relationship with the wider PKW group and strive to be the best in what they do.” Last season Matt’s sister, Bex, also worked on the farm full-time. Bex has moved onto a larger PKW farm, taking on a position with more responsibility. This season will also see Gavin Stratton from PKW’s No 32 Farm come on-board in a part-time capacity. In the winter of 2014, PKW’s No 2 Farm underwent major developments that included the construction of a new effluent system and a 60-bale rotary

cowshed. The cowshed and effluent system have been designed to handle up to approximately 850 cows. BFEA judges said this well-planned upgrade, combined with Roger and Matt’s management, helped the farm to achieve almost 32,000kgMS of extra production with just five additional cows. With an average annual rainfall in the area of around 1,350mm, like most farms in Taranaki, the property can get very wet at times. Roger said the brown loam soils are free-draining and pretty resilient. “The fertility of the farm is good with average P-level of around 45. A record has been kept of the types of ryegrass,

and understanding the horse’s thought process, why he does the things he does in response or reaction,” she said. “I never heard of horsemanship at that time but looking back now, I had stumbled upon a shadow of the understanding I have now.” Mel regularly attends horsemanship clinics to further her understanding and refine her skills. Three years ago, Mel passed the National Certificate in Equine (Level Three) through Onsite Education. She also gained a Certificate in Equine Nutrition through the University of Edinburgh. She said this ignited her passion for hooves. “I ordered resources through Pete Ramey and Jaime Jackson, and spent every spare minute with my nose in their books for months.” Mel began to learn in depth about hoof anatomy and correlation between diet, movement, trimming, as well as hoof form and function. “The more I learnt, the more I wanted to learn.” She started trimming her own horse and realised she had a knack for it. People caught wind of what I was doing and I started trimming for a few of them.” Mel has now been trimming hooves for more than 18 months but only recently became a registered business, which she owns and solely runs. Together with her husband and two young children, Mel lives on a 550-cow dairy farm near Opunake. Her husband is the farm’s manager and also works as an AB technician. “Due to being on the farm and having our young children, I can only work parttime trimming.” With a small client base around Mount Taranaki, Mel travels to trim their horses every four weeks. A lot of Mel’s clients have approached her for natural hoof care as shoes and traditional farriery

Mel is currently training a four-year-old pinto/standardbred gelding hasn’t worked for their horses, or their horses have hoof issues that others haven’t been able to correct. “I think my point of difference is that I have a holistic approach to hoof care. I aim to replicate hooves of the wild, free roaming horses by influencing natural wear patterns and restoring proper mechanics and function,” she said. “Wild horses have a short hoof capsule from heel to toe, concave sole, large callused frog, thick walls and a self worn mustang roll. Mel aims to achieve this on domestic horses over time by means of gentle, mindful trimming, while keeping the horse sound and comfortable during the process. “Holistic barefoot hoof care is just so efficient. We’re using nature to heal and restore hooves simply by trimming

in a fashion that promotes correct function which in turn grows out old pathology and in comes these amazing top performing hooves that can, and do, go anywhere. “I’m currently correcting two foundered horses which are making great progress, and maintaining many very functional hooves too.” Part of Mel’s holistic approach to hoof care includes dietary, environmental and after-care advice for the owners. “If the diet, living environment or hygiene is causing problems for the hooves, trimming will only get them so far, so it is vital that the owners understand the importance of approaching hoof care as a whole.” Eventually Mel plans to become HoofNZ certificated and work full-time caring for horses.

Back then the average dairy farm was 40 hectares, farming was simple and easy and during that period our NZ farmers were recognised as the most proficient and cost effective farmers on the planet, people from around the globe were coming to NZ to witness what was happening. Our agricultural science was enviable, our scientists were completely independent, funded by the taxpayer and expanding the envelope of good, healthy farming. There were very little problems and I remember the most toxic product in the milking shed was the oil required to keep the separator running smoothly. When we hit the mid 1980’s there was a radical change in farming based around corporate scientific systems and industrial farming coming out of the United States. The first big shift I recognised was the introduction of maize as a supplementary feed for dairy and drystock. What sort of backward thinking was that? Maize causes acidosis in Ruminant animals resulting in mastitis. Maize and corn are for chickens, chickens do well on it, however Ruminants which are the bulk of our farming are designed to convert grass into milk and meat and they are really good at it, especially if there is plenty of clover on the farm.

The other big move was the introduction of toxic chemical animal health tonics. Stored behind locked cages in a profusion of different colours, all with the same word — Poison — written on the plastic label. They are there to control the myriad of problems, but they don’t really work, as we see pests, diseases and weeds building immunity towards these artificial chemical concoctions. There is a solution to all this chemical dilemma and all the answers are within nature. Just to get you thinking onto the right track we need to go back 460 million years ago to when the first plant appeared and there was obviously soil biota already operating and multiplying in the soil. Once the plant world was underway then other life forms such as animals and sea life began to multiply. Planet earth has been able to sustain all life on the globe for the past 460 million years and is still doing it in those areas of natural habitat. 100 years of chemical production and our beautiful planet is suffering, we need to take care of our planet and the fastest way to do this is to move away from the “chemical age”; hook into all the natural capital supplied free by Mother Nature and begin working with Agrissentials multi-mineral,

microbial rich fertilisers bringing health vitality and immunity to plant life which will transfer on to animals and humans. This is all part and parcel of Mother Nature’s system. Nature has all the checks and balances to keep life pumping. Chemicals increase problems. Chemicals increase their own market. The heavy use of chemicals have impacted on soil to the extent a lot of soils have no life, no micro organisms and no worms. This scenario opens up the soil to fungal toxins, infertility and FE causing fungus, these toxic fungi live on the dead plant material in the bottom of the pasture. The best way to fix this problem is to have a live, living soil full of microorganisms and worms, which love thatch and turn it into topsoil, keeping the whole system alive, healthy and fertile, fixing the problem, keeping the stock happy and keeping money in the farmer’s pocket. With nature it’s a win, win situation. Call us today on 0800 THE KEY for a FREE INFO PACK, that’s 0800 843 539 to find out how we can partner with you to find a better way of farming. Enhancing farm systems A brand new farming initiative — Extension 350 — is an innovative programme, the first of its kind for New Zealand. Designed to lift on-farm performance through improving farm systems and profitability through shared knowledge. Extension 350 chairman, Ken Hames, is highly enthusiastic about the initiative’s potential. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Beef and Lamb, DairyNZ, Northland Inc and the Ministry of Primary Industries to work together to improve the region’s economy,” says Mr Hames. The programme aims to have 350 Northland farms involved in four years and is modelled on having clusters of five farms working together with business advice and direction provided to a Target Farmer by an expert consultant, with that relationship encouraged by a Mentor Farmer. The expectation is that the Target Farmer

Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

The WRX wagon may have skipped a generation, but it’s back with an aggressive and angular new facelift and the requisite smooth boxer-configured 2 litres under the hood to offer up 197 kilowatts of power. All the precision and poise of the regular WRX is right here despite the different rear roofline — a small feat of engineering magic. The best accolade anyone could give is that it evokes the feeling of the old original WRX wagon, and it’s clear that great lengths have been gone to to achieve just that. But the final clue — and a bit of a surprise — is hidden in the name of the Levorg.

A beast on and off the track — where a road-going variant became a favourite with tuners and fast-fours afficionados — the WRX started life lean and mean. As generations passed, however, it gained all the weight associated with driver comforts and modern safety features, while its arch rival the Mitsubishi Evo sailed over the edge of twitchy performance. When the WRX was king, one of the favourite models on offer was a four door station wagon, combining a little practicality with the turbocharged madness. New Zealand took to the WRX wagon with enthusiasm, matched by our love affair with other ‘estate’ Subarus — the ubiquitous silver Legacy enjoyed the dubious honour for some time of being our nation’s most stolen car. Then came our new automotive crush, the SUV, and wagons of every marque faded into the sunset. Today, in most showrooms, the crossover 4x4 rules the roost, with very few true station wagons to be found. That’s why the new Subaru Levorg is bucking all kinds of trends. It’s a wagon in a world of compact sedans and crossover SUVs. It picks up where the WRX of the past left off. With the new Legacy 3.6 turning heads but not available with all that extra boot space, it’s slotting into the Subaru stable with big boots to fill in both directions. Setting aside the very distinctive name — which has been compared to that of a James Bond villain — it’s refreshingly easy to see what the Levorg is about.

ADVERTORIAL

Helping sore joints Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease with over 70 per cent affected at some time, often from middle age. For me it struck much earlier. My hyper-flexible thumb joints meant that the joint cartilage was severely worn in my thirties. From my forties this caused significant problems limiting the use of my hands. Now at 61 years old, I still have worn joints but have almost no symptoms. This is testimony to the combination of an anti-inflammatory diet and a supplement programme high in omega-3, antioxidants and joint support compounds, especially high doses of chondroitin and curcumin (turmeric). Joint products with glucosamine and chondroitin have been available for 20 years and the past few years has seen more intensive research to assess the effectiveness of these compounds. Older style formulations were heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate. This was probably because research published in Lancet in 2001 showed benefits from using glucosamine for (knee) osteoarthritis. More recent research has focussed on the reasons why these compounds

seem to work. An excellent French study published in 2011 looked specifically at chondroitin sulphate and concluded: ‘CS treatment significantly reduced the cartilage volume loss in knee OA starting at six months of treatment. These findings suggest a joint structure protective effect of CS and provide new in vivo information on its mode of action in knee OA’ — Wildi et al, 2011, Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. As a result of this research I reformulated my joint product to boost chondroitin to the levels used in this research. With experience, I have found combining these ingredients with omega-3 and potent antioxidants can really make a difference. Feel free to call me for personalised advice. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula

Biodiversity forum welcomed Federated Farmers welcomes the new national biodiversity forum announced by minister Nick Smith at the Environmental Defence Society conference recently. “One of the most challenging issues for councils and communities is improving the protection of our native species on private land while respecting the reasonable rights of owners to use their land for farming, forestry and other economic activities. This initiative is about bringing environmental groups and landowners together to develop clearer national policy on protecting the plants and animals that make New Zealand special,” said Mr Smith. Federated Fa r m e r s spokesperson for biodiversity Chris Allen says we now have the opportunity to come to a common understanding of the pressures and priorities for biodiversity, on land and in water. “From here we chart a way forward. Part of this will be agreeing on a national policy statement,” said Mr Allen. “Alongside that, we have the opportunity to look at how we can upscale ‘action on the ground’ partnerships. “The vision and thinking around the recent predator free New Zealand announcement is an excellent start for tackling the key issues for native biodiversity on land and water,” said Mr Allen.

Chris Allen, Federated Farmers spokesperson for biodiversity

The Cape to City project in Hawke’s Bay is an example — tackling predator control and restoring plants and wildlife across 26,000 hectares of land between Hastings, Cape Kidnappers and south to Waimarama. “The key to its success is a coordinated effort at scale with affordable technology that transforms how pest management takes place on farmland. “We’re all for action, getting as many ‘troops on the ground’ to tackle the introduced pests and predators head on.”

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

OVER THE FENCE POST Lyn Mudgway, Director of Forward Safety NZ

Gumboots and ballerinas I bumped into a farmer I know recently and he wasn’t happy. It turns out someone had sold him a Health and Safety Plan telling him it was exactly what he needed to comply with the new Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. The salesman took his money, handed him a pile of papers and left. He told me it was about as much use as gumboots to a ballerina on a skydive. I had to agree. Just as you need lessons to drive a car, you need help to learn how to use your Health and Safety Plan so that you not only comply with legislation, but more importantly, make sure that everyone in your place of business learns how to look for hazards and consider how safe a task is before they start. An unfortunate side effect of the new legislation is slick-talking salespeople, taking advantage of business owners who want to do the right thing, only to leave the purchaser scratching their head and wondering what they have just bought. You can start by asking the salesperson what their safety qualifications are and whether they will be running through the safety plan with you and showing you how to incorporate it into your business. Ask them to tell you 10 ways in which using their plan will improve safety in your workplace. If they can’t satisfy you, then shop around and find someone who can. The new legislation was never meant as a burden. Functional Fertiliser Ltd have created

If you are looking for someone to help you get your safety ducks in a row, make sure that the person is qualified to do so. Find someone who will not only give you the tools to work with, but also teach you how to use those tools the way the legislation intended, to keep you and your workers safe.
