The report, commissioned by the New Zealand Horticulture Export Authority (HEA) and Horticulture New Zealand is released every two years. It is used extensively by industry and government agencies as a reference point for negotiators to improve market access and helping exporters to develop new market opportunities. Funding support for the report is provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the New Zealand Fruitgrowers Charitable Trust. Close to 60 per cent of New Zealand’s total horticultural production of fruit and vegetables is exported, valued at just over $3.4 billion. Mr Guy said horticulture is a star performer of New Zealand’s economy, making it one of our most important industries. The report showed horticultural produce exporters paid an estimated $190 million in tariffs — a reduction of 22 per cent on 2012’s figure of $241 million. “Horticulture has a goal of being a $10 billion industry by 2020 and they are well on the way,” said Mr Guy.

“They are now New Zealand’s fourth largest export industry and employ 60,000 people in New Zealand.” Horticulture Export Authority chief executive Simon Hegarty said the nine free-trade agreements (China, Australia, AANZFTA, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, P4 and Korea) now in effect are delivering benefits as overall trade value increases while the relative tariff cost falls. “This report confirms the real value benefits from our trade agreements, and our need to sustain efforts developing new agreements to maintain our international competitiveness.” Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman said it’s important that exporters and government jointly recognise the risks posed by non-tariff barriers, and take appropriate steps to maintain horticulture’s goal of being a $10 billion industry by 2020. Mr Guy said it was very fitting for the report to be released on the day when Horticulture New Zealand celebrated 100 years of representing growers, starting as the New Zealand Fruitgrowers Federation in 1916.

With summer on the way, hill country farmers are encouraged to get retirement and reversion fencing projects underway, with funding assistance available from the Taranaki Regional Council. The council’s land management officers provide soil conservation advice and free personalised plans to help match land use to land capability. Those plans give access to South Taranaki and Regional Erosion Support Scheme (STRESS) funding. The programme, which has been running for five years, received approval earlier this year for another $1.2 million from the Ministry of Primary Industries. The STRESS programme will continue for another four years. Taranaki Regional Council’s land services manager, Don Shearman said STRESS funding, which covers reversion and retirement, gives hill country farmers a unique opportunity to implement soil conservation measures as guardians of the land. This will also help farmers to futureproof their farms against storms and associated soil loss, as experienced in 2015. In June last year, a storm dumped up to 302mm of rain across the region in a 24-hour period, leaving hill country farms with soil erosion, extensive slipping and damage to fencing. “Retiring or rever ting highmaintenance and low-production marginal land can increase farm profitability and sustainability because

Funds are also available to go towards poplar and willow poles, forestry, and wetlands protection to make farm and stock management easier, and to help increase farm resilience and soil retention, as well as assisting with the protection of native flora and fauna. The STRESS programme is cofunded by the council and the Ministry for Primary Industries through their Hill Country Erosion Fund.

HOOKED ON EQUINE DENTISTRY BY DENISE GUNN

EQUINE DENTAL TECHNICIAN SHELLEY CHURCHILL HAS EXTENDED HER SKILLS TO INCLUDE TRAINING AS A BOWEN PRACTITIONER FOR HUMANS AND HORSES.

S

helley’s long and varied involvement with horses began when she started riding at the age of four, attending Okato Pony Club where her mother was an instructor. On leaving school, she took up an apprenticeship as a jockey in the Waikato, followed by work on a thoroughbred stud farm. “I got involved with young horses and breaking them in,” said Shelley. A move to work for Arabian horse breeders Sandy and Phil Duncan on their farm in the King Country, introduced Shelley to preparing horses

for endurance riding and polocrosse, as well as working on the farm. She also worked with horses on polocrosse player Robin Cave’s Taumarunui sheep and beef farm for a couple of years. After a stint travelling overseas, she returned to join the New Zealand Army, then resettled in Taranaki where she picked up the reins and returned to endurance riding. Shelley’s initial interest in equine dentistry was sparked when equine dental technician, Kyla Johnson, worked on her horse’s teeth.

From her Urenui base, Shelley covers mainly the Taranaki region to tend to horses dental requirements

Unlike human teeth, equine teeth are continually growing or erupting. These teeth, due to the grinding action, develop sharp points on the outside of the top molars and the inside of the bottom molars. Enamel points can lacerate the cheeks and tongue, causing very painful ulcers which inhibit chewing and affect the horse while being ridden. The horse will lose weight, evade the bit, and could fail to stop or turn. The basic job of an equine dentist is to file the points so that they are smooth. Horses should have their teeth checked at least annually. In 2003, Shelley completed a sixweek American School of Equine Dentistry course held in the Bay of Plenty. Dr Ray Hyde, who established the American School of Equine Dentistry in 1994, travelled to New Zealand to hold the course. Along with Dr Hyde as head instructor, Shirley Calder, Warwick Burns, Gerald Tracy and Bruce Neil were assistant teachers. The course covered equine anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, business training, ethics, practical equine dentistry, horse-handling, occupational safety and bitting. “Ray was very holistic and taught the use of hand and power tools, the emphasis was on being able to use hand tools without the horse being sedated.” said Shelley. New graduates of the course usually team up with an experienced equine dentist for further work experience. Shelley teamed up Shirley whenever possible to gain further knowledge. “It’s a very hands-on numbers game to get a feel for it.” From her Urenui base, Shelley regularly travelled through the west coast and northern regions of the South Island, as well as the King Country, Auckland and around Taranaki to attend to horses teeth. “I would travel to wherever there was a group of horses.”

Shelley now covers mainly the Taranaki region to tend to horses dental requirements. “I like to be able to help horses and that’s my motivation.” To continually upgrade her skills, Shelley attends workshops and training days. She also works part-time as an AB technician for Livestock Improvement, covering the Stratford area. In addition to equine dentistry, Shelley travels regularly to Australia to the Equus College of Learning and Research to train under Alli Goward in Equine Muscle Release Therapy (EMRT), the official Bowen therapy for horses. The Bowen technique is also known as Bowtech. “I will be doing saddle-fitting as part of my EMRT course but have plans

studies and two more modules, as well as anatomy and physiology papers, to be a practitioner. She hopes to have all these completed midway through next year. Shelley also intends furthering her training to include Cat and Canine Muscle Therapy (CCMRT). “I hope to work on working dogs and also with my horse training, learn how to do cattle so I can also help dairy cows. It’s amazing therapy.”

Spending time on relatives’ and friends’ farms in the Taranaki during school holidays gave Sam Hughson a taste for farming from a young age.

s a Year 12 student at Hamilton Boys’ High School, Sam was able to get a foot in the door to work in the dairy industry through Primary ITO’s Gateway programme. He also took up weekend work as a relief milker. The opportunity to go a step further came in 2014 when Sam was offered a farm assistant position on Steve and Maria Poole’s dairy farm at Kapuni. On his first day of work, Sam put goals in place to aim towards owning

his own herd and to eventually be in a position to go 50 per cent sharemilking. Since then Sam has worked his way up to work as assistant farm manager and now, at just 20 years of age, farm manager. The farm’s previous manager, Jarrico Murray, moved onto a variable order sharemilking position at Ohangi. As a young farm manager with two new staff members, Sam aims to provide a good example. “I like training staff and seeing them progress, and also enjoy the challenge of a hands-on job,” he said. Sam’s enthusiasm for the job has led to

a desire to further his knowledge. He is currently studying Primary ITO Level Four Dairy Farming. The Poole’s farm covers 210ha effective with 190ha in grass and 20ha in maize. Steve and Maria operate a high input, split-calving system and currently there are around 806 cows milked through a fully-automated 60-bail rotary cowshed. Sam said they breed a cross-breed cow on the farm. “They are a smaller, efficient cow but we still keeping Friesians in the herd.” With plans to progress up the dairy

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Sam feeding the calves industry ladder as soon as possible, Sam entered the Taranaki Dairy Industry Awards. “The first year, I went in to see what it was like and won the Most Promising Entrant Award,” said Sam. “The second year, I knew what I was going into and made the top five.” He said plenty of reading and studying helped him to prepare for the contest. “My boss also dedicated a lot of his time to help me succeed and learn.” All this preparation paid off as Sam won the 2016 Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year category. Sam has worked hard, saving his earnings to purchase a rental property in Hawera as an investment. He aims to eventually sell this property to enable him to buy a herd.

“My five year plan is to be in a position to purchase a herd when I’m 25,” he said. “Then I want to go 50/50 sharemilking.” Sam said he looks up to his employer Steve, and would like to eventually be where he is. “I would like to be a farm owner and if that happens when I’m just over 30, then that would be good as well.” In his time away from the farm, Sam often travels back to Hamilton to catch up with family and friends. He also enjoys trail riding on his dirt bike, playing cricket for a local club and casual rugby. Sam plans to enter the 2017 Taranaki Farm Manager of the Year competition. “Feedback from the judges will help improve my farm management skills,” he said.

Healthy people, healthy planet by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

While we continue to use chemical fertilisers, we will need to continue with chemical toxic sprays, which will keep us on a chemical treadmill; down the road to soil erosion and environmental destruction. For approximately 400 million years our planet has supported many forms of life without exhausting any reserves and the main reason for that is Mother Nature’s recycling system which keeps production sustainable year in, year out. After only a hundred odd years of chemical production we are going backwards. Chemicals have stifled and choked nature’s natural recycling system

to a point that pollution on the planet is a major problem and increasing. Here at Agrissentials Research Centre we have the answer to the problem. The first step is to stop using chemicals, they increase their own market, but in reality they don’t work — chemicals are causing the problem! We have reached the point where large pharmaceutical companies have

run out of chemicals to fight pest, disease and weeds, and even today antibiotics are losing their power to keep people alive. The ultimate point to start a Renaissance is first and foremost the top soil — to bring health and vitality back to the soil. When the soil is right, everything above and below the soil falls into place, the sustenance of all life is taken care of. That’s how Mother Nature’s systems work. A hundred years of pest, disease and weed eradication has not only failed, but it has increased the immunity of pest, disease and weeds. So, in reality, that is the answer. We need to strengthen the immune systems of plants, animals and people and to do that, we need to have a full array of minerals in our diet to strengthen and build our immune system — it’s no big deal! It is the deal! However, the corporate food industry and the agriculture food industry, over the past 50 years or so, have taken the important minerals out of our diet, in particular the trace elements which are an essential part to building immunity. Here at Agrissentials we recognise that all health problems indicate a mineral deficiency, the hard part is trying to find out what mineral or minerals are missing in the diet. To cover this scenario, Agrissentials have developed multi-mineral, microbial

rich BioGro certified natural fertilisers that contain a full array of minerals to cover all basis. All the mineral immunity and health is designed to come through the food chain. That is not happening and the fast food chain is a clear example of that. To grow a strong healthy plant you need minerals, microbes, sunlight and water. Agrissentials fertility system is based on a multi-mineral, microbial rich method. The first creatures at the mineral dining table are the micro-organisms. They convert the natural minerals to a plant available form. They lock the minerals in humus (organic matter), so they won’t leach from the soil. The plant takes up the minerals when needed. The minerals are recognised by the plant at the cellular level — the ultimate level for plant uptake. The plant converts the minerals to an animal and human available form where everything is aligned to health and vitality. This is a beautiful system containing all the checks and balance for a healthy life and healthy planet. WATER MATTERS

ADVERTORIAL

Is your holiday gear ready? It’s time for the bach to be aired out, the camper back on the road and the fishing rods ready for this summer. To ensure everything is working fine, where corrosion in the salt air is concerned, preventive measures are required. This is especially so in seaside Taranaki. The gorgeous beaches and pristine waters also produce nasty rust and invasive electrolysis. So if you want your electronics to perform, keep the rust off the trailer and make your favourite rod work smoothly when the ‘big one’ strikes, then you

seriously want to see SKF-Applied Industrial Technologies in New Plymouth and get yourself some CorrosionX. Downer, Top Energy and Northpower did that already for their service vans. CorrosionX looks after fuse boxes, transformers, hinges, padlocks and electronics.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of irrigation Irrigation is the black art of replacing water which has been removed from the ground by evapotranspiration (ET) through plants. This is part of how plants ingest their nutrients. Important points to know: NIWA have ET rates for your area, check their website. It will show rates as a graph through the year, summer obviously higher but ET is also determined by the atmosphere’s ability to absorb the moisture, so it is higher on windy days due to higher dispersal. Every millimetre of rain you need to apply daily requires 10,000 litres/ha, so if ET hits 5mm you need at least 50,000 litres every hectare, every day. That’s if you want the plant to really grow, not just look green. You need to match ET rate plus allowance for percolation through the soil (over irrigation) plus loss during irrigation, minus rainfall (if any). ET rates follow quite closely to available moisture rates so it is important to begin irrigating early enough as the plant growth will have checked by the time you notice it. Woody plants have a higher ET rate than leafy plants so kale ET will likely be more than chicory. Admittedly plants with deep roots will hang on longer,

mostly in heavy soils but in the end need still water replacement. Irrigating methods are just that, management tools, don’t be fooled by the fancy promises, they can’t make your plant excel with less than ET rate — assuming you are trying to hold constant moisture in the ground. Beware of stories telling you that a system allows you to get away with less application. They do exist but also require electronic monitoring and experience on the operator’s part. Keep water droplets as large as practicable. This is where you can save some water. Despite public perception, small sprinklers can easily have the same losses as large sprinklers, it’s just not so visible. The law of physics tells us when you expose water to warm air it evaporates. Large bodies of water (large droplets) have a greater mass to surface area than small bodies, so fine mist tends to evaporate more — keep the nozzle size up/nozzle pressure down, within reason!

There’s no free lunch with irrigation, either you can have a cheap system with lots of running costs and maintenance or a more reasonably priced system but with better application evenness, better growth patterns, and easier and less time consuming management and maintenance. Often the principal cost

differences between the two are not proportional to the results. Clement (Clem) Powell of Irri-Max Ltd has been installing irrigation systems for over 20 years. Give him a call if you want more information on 0800 426 296.

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

It is with mixed emotion that I read about the failure of our two big fertiliser co-operatives to procure decent RPR that meets standards set by the NZ Fertiliser Council. It is pleasing to see that this problem, of inferior phosphate being dumped on the NZ market to farmers who put a lot of trust in these majority stakeholders, is being aired publicly at last. Printed in a leading fertiliser company newsletter September 2015, I quote, ‘Clover King Sechura contains high

quality sechura rock from Peru… Our new phosphate rock fertiliser can be expected to outperform similar products on an equal kilogram of phosphate applied basis.’ Although later in the piece, the writer admits the product doesn’t come up to standard, I felt the article was misleading and not only degrading to quality RPR, but also degrading to the name Sechura. It is horrifying to expect farmers to now buy some second-grade fertiliser just because these guys haven’t got the real McCoy. I am pleased to see the NZ Fertiliser Council are there to keep the integrity and standards set for RPR, as this product is becoming the go-to phosphate source for our ever increasing forwardthinking farmers heading towards a more environmentally friendly future. RPR is natural, and gradually releases in the soil at a near neutral pH which soil biology can handle, and is an alternative source of phosphate allowable for organic farmers. As it contains calcium, it does not have an acidifying effect on the soil. The standard set by the NZ Fertiliser Council for RPR requires no less than 10% phosphate and no

less than 30% solubility in citric acid. Sechura RPR has always set the gold standard for RPR which is mined in Peru. An example of a shipment of Sechura Reactive Phosphate Rock (RPR) procured by a North Island based fertiliser company in June 2016, tested 12.495% phosphate, 6.4pH, 71% calcium carbonate, citric solubility of 47% and includes a range of trace elements. Where phosphate is required as an input into a fertiliser programme, there is arguably no other product on the market in NZ that can touch Sechura RPR for quality and proven results over a long period of time. I applaud Fertmark for standing its ground and not compromising the standards and integrity of our fertiliser products in NZ. In these situations it can be an easy move to be persuaded to lower the bar. Smaller fertiliser companies who specialise in custom blends can get the best quality RPR. I would urge farmers to shop around for quality if they are to expect the best response for money spent. If you are looking for Sechura RPR (the real stuff), ask uncle Google. He has all the answers.

Busting the two party system by Andy Bryenton

Down here in New Zealand and Australia, it’s always been a two-horse race in the world of big V8 four-door tourers. Folks nail their colours to the mast at an early age, declaring for Ford or Holden and often defending their choice loudly and with malicious use of Bathurst victory statistics in the nation’s bar-rooms. But there’s a third big automaker in the US, and they’re poised to fill the niche left behind as the classic Commodore and the iconic Falcon leave the spotlight. Sure, the likes of Mustang and Camaro stir the blood, but there is a special place in New Zealand motoring for a big, four-door, comfy, growling V8 touring car. One that’s not German, or indeed Japanese, considering options way back to the Lexus LS400. So, presenting the Chrysler 300 SRT. A hyper-muscular version of the Ralph Gilles designed 300C, which caused such a stir in the early 2000s with its ‘Goodfellas’ good looks and its purring hemi eight, the SRT shares that trio of letters with muscle car royalty. Think Viper, Hellcat and even the monumental Ram pickup truck — and you’re in the ballpark. Not to be outdone, this boosted version of the second generation letter car, packs in 350 kilowatts — that’s 460hp in the old money. Add in space, comfort and the fact that, seen from a certain angle, it has a bit of the Bentley about it, and this looks like a real contender for the vacancy at the top of the four-door V8 table. Now, to be clear, the 300 SRT is not specifically what the Commodore or XR8 were. Those were bold, brash, workingclass heroes made good. The Chrysler

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads stems from a bloodline that contains a shot of W211 Mercedes, and it brings luxury and an aura of subtle menace to the road. That low roofline, massive rims and the subdued growl of the 6.4 litre eight, hint at knuckle dusters hidden up a tailored suit jacket sleeve. Take it out for a spin, though, and it’s smooth and unruffled, eschewing the tyre-shredding pantomime of the maddest Fords and Holdens downunder. The sound is there, but the fury is tamed by adaptive damping suspension, a balanced eight-speed box and Brembo performance brakes. The perfect gentleman, then? Well,

they did fit the SRT with launch control for a reason. But inside, you’ll find a calm space at the centre of the 350 kilowatt storm — a place that reminds you that there were Valiants on Mount Panorama alongside those Falcons and Commodores. If ever there was time to consider the third party, here it is. You will be pleasantly surprised at what the ‘grandson’ of the mighty Valiant Charger can do!

Boost for genetics In a landmark trans-Tasman collaboration, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics and Meat & Livestock Australia are committing a total of $5.2 million over three years towards major joint beef research projects. New Zealand beef genetics research is about to get a ‘shot in the arm’, thanks to the landmark transTasman collaboration. All projects within the collaboration — regardless of which side of the Tasman they fall on — will be overseen by B+LNZ Genetics. “When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite

B+LNZ Genetics general manager Graham Alder says the collaboration means every one dollar of New Zealand farmer levy investment translates to $3.50 of research funding. “The research and development needs of New Zealand and Australian producers are well-aligned. It makes sense for scientists on both sides of the Tasman to work together to solve common problems,” Mr Alder said. “Beef genetics research in New Zealand has been underfunded for 30 years. This partnership means research can progress and the results communicated out to breeders and commercial farmers many years earlier. For Australia, it means faster progress and an opportunity to advance projects that may not have otherwise gone ahead.” The partnership centres around the trans-Tasman Beef Cow Profitability Programme, which aims to balance desirable maternal traits in beef cows, with the finishing performance of the calves and their ability to meet quality carcase specifications. The programme will develop genetic measures for better

describing the important physical attributes of the cow — such as size, body condition and her ability handle fluctuations in feed availability, fertility indicators in heifers, and selection tools for easy decision-making. It will also investigate how different environments and farm systems in both countries impact on the balance of traits required to produce an economically efficient cow. This research will also help underpin advancements in genomic technology. Who is involved?
