ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

septi-cure is: › Cost Effective › Easy To use › Improves Soakage

› Reduces Solids and Scums › Eliminates Nasty Odours › Reduces Costly Pump-outs

Breakthrough Product Developed for your Septic Tank

Lisa Hicks — last year’s winner

The Dairy Community Leadership Award, run by the Dairy Women’s Network (DWN), recognises a dairying woman who is making a significant contribution in her local rural community through leadership and support. “Women eligible for this award are often the unsung heroes in our dairy communities,” says DWN CEO Zelda de Villiers. “They might be the women organising your local events, on various boards and committees, and are involved in all aspects of dairying life — from milking the cows through to offering advice and support to those around them.” The award, sponsored by ASB and Tompkins Wake, includes a scholarship prize to attend a leadership programme in New Zealand. The title will be awarded at the national DWN conference in Queenstown in May. The selection panel includes the CEO of DWN, ASB and Tompkins Wake representatives, and a DWN regional convenor. The judging panel will judge nominations based on who has demonstrated leadership in her community, played an active role in community organisations and events,

and is an active member of DWN and a good representative for the organisation. Last year’s winner, Lisa Hicks, was recognised for her commitment to sharing dairying knowledge and fostering a love of the industry among the younger generation. An advocate for ongoing education, Ms Hicks regularly hosts local and international students on her farm to show what dairy farming is like, and she also partners with other industry training organisations to host farming students. She helped establish the Ohakune DairyNZ on-farm discussion group and is a DWN regional convenor in the Manawatu region. Upon winning last year she said for her, the award meant access to further learning. “I do more managerial roles on the farm now, and my son is 2IC so he’s taken over a lot of my former roles,” she says. “The award means looking closely at yourself, your learning and leadership style, and putting yourself out there to do more and meet new people.” Visit www.dwn.co.nz to find out more about the awards or to nominate a deserving dairying woman.

Technology helps dairy farmers

February 2017

Dairy farmers with herringbone sheds can now tap into the latest smart device technology to help them determine in real time — while their animals are being milked — which cows are producing the best or the worst on any given day. For farmers with small to mediumsized herds, the technology is surprisingly inexpensive compared to other automation products. The ‘YieldSense Connected’ app, developed by LIC Automation, has been available to a portion of the dairy farmer market for some time but it now includes new functionality to allow wider farmer appeal. Farmers equipped with YieldSense in-line sensors can use the YieldSense Connected app to immediately identify the ‘passengers’ (low value/production cows) in their herds, along with identification of high-producing (high value) cows. YieldSense is an automated in-line milk sensor that provides farmers with live yield and milk solid results. Until now, the system’s marketability has been restricted to farmers with automated rotar y-operated dairy sheds. The YieldSense Connected app works by capturing information from the milk sensors, alerting the farmer of the results via their smart device. Results include a summary of the bottom, and top performing individual cows in the herd. Graham Cates, manager of a 300cow herd in Walton, uses YieldSense Connected to record the yield for each cow in his herd.

He taps into the technology for a 10day period each month. “We record the alerts when they appear. Whenever we’re alerted, we go to the bail, get the cow number, and punch it into the phone,” Graham says. The information backs up animal management decisions. “It makes our job easier, it is user friendly and fast, and now we don’t herd test. “We make our decisions about what we’re going to do — treat, dry off, or cull.” The app goes beyond individual cow results. Herd-level reporting is designed to provide a platform for farmers to focus on herd improvement solutions. A flashing light system in the milking shed is an optional extra. The lights provide milking staff with an additional visual alert — signalling the bottom — and top-performing cows before they return to the paddock. Paul Whiston, LIC Automation chief executive, says the app is easily accessible — but even better — it makes leading-edge technology affordable for most farmers, particularly those with small to mid-size herds. “Up until now YieldSense has really only been available for farmers with rotary milking sheds that have an in-bail cow identification system.

Increase your productivity with the dry matter heavy-weight. FAST ESTABLISHING REGROWTH

COST EFFECTIVE GREEN FEED

EXCELLENT PALATABILITY

Graham Cates, manager of a 300-cow herd in Walton

“The YieldSense Connected app opens the technology up to the entire market, including farmers with herringbone milking sheds. “YieldSense Connected, and the previously released CellSense Connected, are part of part of a strategy to offer farmers more choice and flexibility with the latest automation solutions.” It is suitable for both Herringbone and Rotary milking sheds and connects to other LIC Automation products.

hearing initially took him around south Taranaki before leading to more work in the South Island. As well as shearing in the summer months, Graeme also took on pre-lamb shearing in July and August. Born and raised on a sheep and beef farm, Graeme’s desire to own a farm

was always in the background. So when the opportunity to manage a sheep and beef farm in Ararata came up, Graeme took on the position. He now owns a 700ha farm near Hawera, running 6,000 stock units. Graeme said his involvement with dog trialling was a community thing to do.

Through observing others working their dogs, Graeme initially picked up knowledge and skills. “I basically learnt how to work dogs from the guys I worked with when I left school. I was told to go and watch the guys that do well at trials week after week, and work out why they were doing well,” he said. “That was good advice.” Graeme has since gone on to win four Huntaway titles and three island titles. His knowledge and experience has also been put to good use in the judging box, including at North Island and New

Zealand championships. “I generally try to compete in all the Taranaki trials, and go to a couple outside of the centre, and go to the island and New Zealand championships,” he said. Graeme tends to breeds his own pups. “I have four bitches at present that I breed to dogs of a quality that I look for.” This quality includes good type, good noise, style and flare, good stock handling and concentration on stock. “Basically looking for something with the X factor,” he said. “I am not afraid to try something bred differently. the Egmont Sheep Dog Trials Club and is currently president. In his role as president, Graeme helps with both the committee work and the organisation of dog trials. Preparing dogs for sheep dog trials is similar to training them for general farm work. Graeme said the most important aspect of training dogs is putting a stop on them. “For a lot of reasons, the stop command is the most important. It gives you the ability to keep him out of trouble, when he is confused, doing things wrong or going to bite. It is important to put the stop command on your dog that means just that — stop.” Graeme said it’s not a freeze, panic or threat command and the dog must be happy to obey it. Meeting people from all over New Zealand with the same interests has been a huge highlight of the sport for Graeme. “Winning national titles has to be up there as well,” he said.

“When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.”

Although Graeme has had many good dogs, his favourite would probably be Prince. Graeme said he was an easy dog to work. Prince’s consistency shone through each time Graeme ran him, day in and day out. “He was not like some dogs I have run, where you are not sure how things are going to go until you get underway. Then they can surprise you one way or the other. “He believed me and I trusted him,” said Graeme. cott’s ties with the Waitotara Valley run deep. He was born and raised on a property his parents managed at the top end of the valley. However it was while working as a shepherd on a property near Hunterville that Scott met Julayne. Scott returned to the Waitotara Valley, followed by Julayne, and the pair ran a contract fencing business in the area. Three years later they took up the management position on Mahoe and Rimunui Stations. In 2014, Scott and Julayne began the lease-to-own agreement for Rimunui, purchasing the

stock and plant. “Our story is a little different from the norm,” said Julayne. “We have a very close relationship with Tom and his wife Gaye, and we wouldn’t have this opportunity without their generosity.” Rimunui used to be the largest station in the district with its original 4,860ha, running 13,000 sheep. The property has since been split up and now covers 2,800ha with 600ha effective. In 2014, four blocks on the property, totalling 750ha, were placed under a QEII National Trust covenant. Since arriving at Rimunui, Scott and Scott and Julayne’s passion is to farm profitably and sustainably whilst preserving the property’s history and environment Julayne’s passion to farm profitably and sustainably runs alongside preserving the property’s history and environment.

The woolshed, built in the early 1900s, was fully renovated in 2008 has been completed, including 13km of the QEII blocks. Spring-fed dams have been created and reticulated through water supplies developed on the flats, more than 2,000 poplar poles have been planted and the development of a wetland area has begun. The woolshed, built in the early 1900s was fully renovated in 2008 and covered yards added. When a wet day hindered Scott and Julayne’s garden wedding plans, the venue switched to the newly restored woolshed. Julayne said Rimunui is a wonderful place to bring up their two children, Charlotte, 7, and Lachie, 5. “There’s so much adventure and learning. “When friends and family come over our bridge to Rimunui, they seldom want to go home.” Currently there are 5,000 stock units running on the steep, hill country property, including 3,200 ewes, 850 hoggets, 50 rams and the balance in cattle. Scott said 50 per cent of the stock leaves Rimunui at about 17½kg carcass weight. Other stock are sold store. At present there are between 400 and 600 contracted hives on Rimunui and the Thompsons would like to treble this number in the coming years. The couple are considering purchasing an Angus cow herd too. With an average, annual rainfall of close to 1,500mm, the Waitotara Valley is predominately summer-safe.

It is however, prone to flooding. “On average we suffer a major flood every five years, June 2015 was one of the worst in recorded history. “Historically the rainfall patterns have changed and we have been getting more extreme drier periods and extreme wet periods in between.”said Scott. After the 2015 flood, the couple needed to focus on something different. They decided to open the farm gates to guests and offer a range of activities. “Sharing the beauty and ruggedness of Rimunui has been a project that Tom, Scott and myself have always wanted

Planting as part of the wetland development to do,” said Julayne. Accommodation options include the 100-year-old fullyrenovated woolshed, farm cottage and bush huts. “We just want people to enjoy the peace, serenity, beauty and history Rimunui has to offer,” said Julayne. “Once people have taken the first step to travel to Rimunui, they feel like they have arrived in heaven.” In 2014 Scott and Julayne entered the Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards and picked up two of the nine awards — Farm Sustainability and Farm Stewardship. “It was an awesome experience,” said Julayne.

ADVERTORIAL

Solution to pollution

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

Pollution in the environment and on the farms is easily solved. We only need to go back to the beginning of the chemical age to realise, that although these products looked good, the continued heavy use of toxic chemicals is increasing damage globally. According to the major chemical companies; they have run out of chemicals to control pest, disease and weeds. Mother Nature’s pests, diseases and weeds have become immune to the chemists’ toxic products. This scenario is also impacting on plant, animal and human health, where drenches, antibiotics, sprays, etc can no longer control the problems. The main deep rooted cause of the problem is a lack of nutrients. Without a full array of minerals to keep the immune system pumping, a lack of these essential minerals impacts the immune system opening up life to all sorts of problems. For the farmers who are just applying N, P and K or worse than that, taking advice from a chemically programmed system, to just apply artificial nitrogen and synthetic soluble phosphate; the two products

that are eroding farms precious soil and damaging the environment — what sort of stupid advice is that! How far away from real natural farming is the chemical industry taking the farmers and what is the point, when consumers, globally, are crying out for nutrient dense food! And so are the plants and the animals! Here at Agrissentials we specialise in multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. Our purpose is to increase the mineral value of the soil, using the microorganisms to convert the natural mineral into a plant available form, storing it in humus, so it does not leach from the soil. The humus created by the microorganisms not only holds the mineral, but also water, increasing the water retention quality of your farm to help you through those dry periods.

COLIN PEPPERELL

Here is a system, whereby your pasture and plants get to use all the mineral purchased plus the added value of water stored within the humus (carbon) created by the microorganisms for plant hydration — this is the natural system at its best! The more you increase the mineral content on your farm, the more you increase the plant, animal and human immunity, ensuring health and vitality to all. The chemical treadmill is taking us nowhere; we need to break the chemical cycle and start working with Mother Nature and all for free capital: like the atmospheric minerals, carbon as carbon dioxide making up 45% of plant mineral requirement, oxygen making up 45% of plant mineral requirement, hydrogen making up 6% of plant requirement and nitrogen contributing the essential 1.5% of plant requirement adding up to 97.5% of plant mineral requirement, all for free straight out of the atmosphere, leaving 2.5% for all other 16 essential elements required for plant health. All these minerals are critical. On a special note: 70% of nitrogen in the atmosphere is fixed by symbiotic microbes and bacteria that live on and in the plant roots. They get carbon from the plant in exchange for nitrogen. The other 30% of nitrogen is fixed by microbes living freely in the soil. In a live, living

soil, earthworm activity creates more air in the soil, which means more water retention. The worms’ castings are also an essential storage of nitrogen. Brookside laboratories found that with 10 worms in a spade spit of soil equals 2.5 million worms per hectare that create 6 tonnes or pure natural nitrogen per hectare per year with no damage to the environment! How good is that! Stop the use of synthetic soluble fertilisers and the environment and your farm will begin improving overnight! That is how simple it is. It has always been that way until the leftover chemical warfare products from the Second World War were sold to farmers as fertilisers and pest, disease and drenching sprays. So, embrace Mother Nature and get your farm pumping down the multimineral, microbial rich track for a better healthier farm, family and environment. Waterways continue health improvements Taranaki Regional Council’s latest monitoring results show continued improvements in the ecological health of Taranaki’s waterways, most noticeably in the region’s ring plain in the midst of its farming areas. The improvements build further on strong gains in recent years.

A Taranaki Regional Council officer collects macroinvertebrate samples as part of the freshwater ecological monitoring programme

Ecological health is the council’s prime measure of freshwater quality and is assessed by examining the populations and types of tiny creatures living in the waterways using the Macroinvertebrate Community Index (MCI). This scoring system is recognised nationally. The most recent report for 2015– 2016 is based on analyses of samples taken in the 2015–2016 year at 53 sites on 26 rivers and streams across the region, and on trends derived from the results of all sampling since 1995. Ecological health improvements were discovered at 46 of these sites. This equates to 87 per cent, which is the highest percentage to date with the majority of the improvements recorded in middle to lower catchments of the Taranaki ring plain. “Yet again, we’re seeing the best results ever in two decades of monitoring,” said the council’s director environment quality Gary Bedford. “Improvements are being seen more broadly every year. “Clearly, the regional community is gaining dividends from the

significant investments it’s been making in environmental protection and enhancement.” Mr Bedford said the continuing improvements in the MCI scores are most encouraging, as they might generally be expected to flatten out after strong gains in recent years. “Many factors are coming into play. Implementation of the Riparian Protection Scheme is in full swing, with thousands of kilometres of stream banks already fenced and protected with vegetation. “Clearly, our waterways are already benefiting from this voluntary effort. And they’ll benefit even more as the scheme moves to completion at the end of the decade.” There have also been major investments in reducing and cleaning up point-source discharges, and this is continuing with a move to land disposal of dairy effluent. “So we can expect to see even more improvements,” said Mr Bedford. The council will report on the outcomes of other waterway monitoring programmes later this year.

Steps to joint health by John Arts

Part one: Osteoarthritis can cause anything from mild discomfort to seriously restricting quality of life. While medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs provide predictable results, nutritional therapy is more unpredictable. Experimentation is important. Some people find their arthritis is greatly influenced by diet while others less so. I generally recommend that people keep clear of common citrus fruits and acidic fruits in general. I am helping one person who by trial and error has found she is very sensitive to strawberries. I am not sure why but small joint arthritis, especially hand joints, seem to be more sensitive to acidic foods. I start most people on an anti-inflammatory diet. The key components are to reduce inflammatory fats, reduce sugars and refined carbohydrates. We target antiinflammatory oils, appropriate protein sources and increase antioxidant dense plant foods. Over the next few columns we will explore the specific components of this type of eating. Not

only will it help joints but is excellent for general health. With supplements, my general approach is to start people on a programme that is most likely to get a positive response in six to eight weeks. I like to keep things simple and usually start with high doses of Omega-3 fish oil for its anti-inflammatory function. To this we to add 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate, 1,500mg of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a 95% bioavailable curcumin (turmeric) extract. In some cases, especially spinal arthritis, I add antioxidant complexes and extra magnesium to relax tissue surrounding the joint. We will maintain these high initial doses usually for one to three months before reducing. Most people start to notice the difference after six weeks. Feel free to contact me for more information. How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

With more than 600 displays and expected to attract more than 30,000 visitors from around New Zealand and overseas, Central Districts Field Days returns to showcase the latest in agriculture from March 16 to 18 at Manfeild Park, Feilding. As an added attraction there is a $20,000 prize pack on offer to ticket holders, while the spectacular Royal New Zealand Air Force Black Falcons will show off their T-6C Texan planes. The $154m package purchased by the Royal New Zealand Air Force included the turboprop aircraft, ground simulators, and classroom and computer-based training packages. The Black Falcons are putting the Texans through their paces at two air shows in February as well as the field days outing. The Central Districts event has grown throughout the last 23 years

from a small collection of marquees in a field to a nationally significant showcase of the latest trends and developments in rural innovation, agribusiness and agri-tech. “This year will be the largest event ever, and recognising many visit as an opportunity to keep abreast of the industry, this year the event is introducing an all new area called the ASB Innovation Zone,” said events manager, Brett McMeekin. “The ASB Innovation Zone grew out of our desire to inspire visitors with all the new products, technologies and

ADVERTORIAL

Looking for a superb lube? High-powered farm gear has come to the farm to stay. So has CorrosionX! Less farmers producing more food and less people milking more cows has become possible because of the hightech equipment we have to help us, that is until one tiny electronic part fails in your tractor or the milking shed. Let one lubrication point on the harvester go dry and best-made plans can fail. Yesteryear’s rust sprays, though cheap per litre, are not cutting it any longer on this sort of equipment. We are looking for superb lubrication, extreme longevity, environmentally safe corrosion inhibitors. We want to waterproof electronics in seconds, stop rust in the shed roof in a few hours and rust proof a bridge in an afternoon. It is all very possible! Smart operators use a very light spray of CorrosionX to waterproof their electronics. Or apply ‘Heavy Duty’ for superb lubrication without attracting dust. One litre of CorrosionX coats 1,000 square feet of metal. CorrosionX is resistance to sulphur, methane, fertiliser and salt water. CorrosionX is safe to 39,000 volts and neutral on insulation, rubber and neoprene. Applied over already wet and corroded metals, it will last for years, not just days. CorrosionX Heavy Duty lubricates three times better than engine oil, never

BUSINESS PROFILE

Recycling the natural way by Dean Hoyle

The NaturalFlow wastewater system is revolutionising domestic water waste and sewage treatment processes in New Zealand using a power-free aerating process as opposed to mechanical pumps. NaturalFlow harnesses Mother Nature’s recycling processes in an enclosed ecosystem that simulates the natural forest floor. Waterflow New Zealand Ltd marketing manager Dean Hoyle explains: “Nature is one huge recycling mechanism, and what our system does is harness those natural processes and forces that have been quietly working together for thousands of years to break down and decompose waste all around us, to treat and break down your wastewater until it is perfectly safe to be reintroduced into the environment.” Waterflow NZ spent almost a decade researching and developing the NaturalFlow system before integrating it into the New Zealand market. Homeowners from Cape Reinga to Bluff now have access to advanced water treatment solutions that are synonymous with clean, green 21st century ideals. The system uses vermiculture to reduce solids by up to

95 per cent, creating valuable watersoluble nutrients that can be recycled safely back into the environment. “No other system has the capacity to reduce solids by this amount. We are very much working with nature in our processes, keeping it simple, and using power-free natural aeration processes instead of mechanical pumps,” said Dean. There are no mechanical moving parts, reducing maintenance processes to practically zero.” “We have lived with a NaturalFlow wastewater system now for four years,” said Adam and Karen. “We chose NaturalFlow because we wanted an environmentally-friendly system that didn’t require expensive, ongoing maintenance. Our system has delivered exactly what we wanted. We have a system which requires no electricity, no pumps and makes no noise. I can’t recommend NaturalFlow enough.”

YOUR FARM, YOUR FUTURE, OUR FOCUS. “

When we planned to change our effluent system, we chose Presco Environmental as we have trusted their quality concrete products in the past and liked the idea of the concrete Prosump over other liner options. Because our project was not straight forward we gained professional advice from Oliver who was able to design the Prosump effluent storage facility to meet our needs, right down to the last detail. We were impressed by how everything went to plan, on time and within budget. We now have a long term sustainable investment and are already benefiting from spreading the effluent, with increased pasture growth, especially in the summer, reducing our fertiliser costs.

The mystery of pumps In most water reticulation or irrigation systems, you are going to need a pump, unless the water is from a pressurised scheme at farm gate or as some lucky farmers I visited recently in Middlemarch Otago have, gravity fed from surrounding hills — a whole 160psi of it! Could this be why some couplings had leaking O-rings? not mean you can get both at once. Even then some of the claims are at best, ‘optimistic’, as observed by our technicians. Buying a pump Using a reputable irrigation professional should avoid these pitfalls. 1. Ask for proof that the pump you are considering is the correct one! Pump curves are not so difficult to read and you can always ask regional council field staff or other professionals to help impartially. Irri-Max Ltd and others have an open policy about what the client is getting. Don’t allow ‘secret squirrel’ stuff. Look for the best efficiency point — is this the same as your intended flow? Does the pump have the ability to produce the required pressure at reasonable input speed? Ask about the pumps Nett Positive Suction Head (NPSH). You might not understand it but a simple calculation is this — start with value of nine then subtract your suction height (pump above water), then see if the balance is larger than the NPSH value at your intended flow. Say your pump is 4m above water (not the best installation), then the NPSH can not be more than five, in fact even this would be a call to get some proper hydraulic engineering done to avoid disappointment. Probably pump techs will laugh at my equation above as there are more Functional Fertiliser Ltd have created

I often get asked about gravity for irrigation but there are a lot of considerations, enough for another blurb perhaps? Pumps work via energy transferred from the shaft to the water in the pump body. So what? Well the critical thing here is that energy costs money, pumping usually occurs over a considerable period and the wrong pump can, consequently, be a very expensive purchase! Just as Mum’s shopping basket’s engine has a different power curve to the farm ute, which is also different to a truck engine, so pumps are also massively different in performance and efficiency at the particular performance you require. Yes, you may get away with towing the boat with Mum’s shopping basket — for a short duration, but the fuel bill is going to be the highest ever and it can’t last. It’s the same with pumps. I often see pumps from clearance sales which have run a low pressure system, being applied to a medium or high pressure system. After all ‘it’s a big pump isn’t it? The guy before was running way more gear than me’. Yup, but now your diesel motor is valve bouncing trying to produce the pressure required, and also the pump is not running in its ‘happy spot’. You could also be pressurising a lot of water, which is going nowhere due to different irrigation flow. Energy cost again! Actually the chance of buying the right pump from a clearance sale are about the same as a winning lottery ticket! One in a million. The best efficiency is usually somewhere around two-thirds full flow on most pumps. This is not maximum pressure, so beware of advertising stuff from certain companies saying ‘Max flow… Max pressure’. This does

Functional Fertiliser Sin

3. Pressure gauges: Insist the pump has a pressure gauge so you can verify the promised performance on your system. 4. Is the suction system large enough? Avoid the ‘thick shake with small straw effect’. 5. Irri-Max Ltd have been importing and supplying irrigation and effluent pumps for more than 20 years. The tough and dependable little Suzuki Jimny 4x4 has a long history of use in all kinds of off-road applications — and success as a road vehicle to boot. Still the weapon of choice for many 4x4 drivers, and a companion for all walks of life from hunters to farmers to adventure sports enthusiasts. But sometimes even the toughness and utility dialled in to these machines at the factory is not enough. That’s why one company from the Bay of Plenty is set on evolving the platform, creating a range of interesting alternatives keyed in to what Kiwis want from their 4x4. Pete Weatherly’s Evolution Custom Utes company has turned the popular little Jimny into the basis for four specialised machines, after listening to what the rural market wanted and needed from an off-roader. While Suzuki themselves offer the Farm Worker ute as an alternative to their road-going Jimny SUV, the ‘overengineered’ super toughness of the Work Mate, Farm Mate, Road Mate and Z Mate variants, makes these more than just a custom curiosity, but a clear upgrade over the basic quad or UTV. The original Suzuki Jimny is no slouch when it comes to taking on the rough stuff. Developed from a long history of compact 4x4s from the Japanese company, the underpinnings of a serious farm vehicle were there all along.

Mr Weatherly comes from a background in farming, but also has a literal track record racing cars and trucks. Like American innovator Mickey Thompson, this often meant going to the drawing board and the engineering shed to make necessary improvements. From humble beginnings as a project to create an affordable and reliable farm vehicle, the Evolution products which he’s created are now distributed all over the country. Advancements in utility, comfort, practicality and toughness have all been carefully considered and thought out, and the

Trees need care too Trees are an important part of the country lifestyle, and planting new trees on your property, if necessary, is a great way to provide shelter for yourself and your animals as well as beautifying the landscape. Often when a property is purchased the trees have already been established but over time trees need maintaining, and knowing when to do this and ensuring this is done correctly can make a big difference to the life of the tree and the safety of yourself, your animals and your property. Trees add beauty, shade and value to your property but they don’t live forever. Several reasons are to do with age, storm damage, weather and environmental elements. It is important to maintain them correctly, and often, hiring the services of a qualified arborist can take all the stress and worry out of this important job rather than putting yourself or loved ones at risk by doing it yourself. A good arborist has an eye for detail in making the tree look its best, and you can’t tell they have been there as the tree looks natural when they have completed their job. You may ask when an arborist is needed? Trees that have dead or broken hanging branches, are dead near the top, have multiple trunks or are on a lean, have decayed wood, cracks in the branches or on the trunk, or any root problems should be looked at by a

professional rather than leaving it for a storm to do it for you. Other factors can also be that it was planted in the wrong place, such as being too close to buildings or power lines. While it may cost to have a professional look at it, you are protecting your investment that is not only the tree itself but your property too. Topping or removing trees and hedges on lifestyle blocks can be made easy by using professional services. These companies often work alongside local power companies when it comes to working around power lines. They often perform hedge topping of hedges that have grown too tall and are blocking out the sun to buildings and gardens as well. Patents PCT/NZ2011/000015 US 13/577,635
