The regional final, to be held in Wellington on Saturday, February 24, is the second of seven similar contests being held across New Zealand. These regional finals will decide the contestants for the grand final to be held in Invercargill in July. Vet student Emma Dangen hopes years of studying at Massey University will help her outsmart the boys. The 23-year-old is in the final year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. “Competing has always been a dream of mine,” she said. Emma’s brother Tim is competing in the Northern Regional Final. Three finalists from Marton Young Farmers; Michael McCombs, club vicechairman Will Taylor, and Lachlan Fee, have each earned a place in the regional final. Michael is contract milking in Kimbolton, Will is a Feilding-based technical field representative for PGG Wrightson, and Lachlan is in his second season managing a 600 cow dairy farm at Opiki. Lachlan said he was stoked to finally win a district contest, after placing third twice. At 30 years of age, Nick Brown is
the oldest contestant in the Taranaki/ Manawatu Regional Final. “This will be my last chance at winning,” he said. Nick and his wife Sophie use a drone to make video blogs about life on their Toko sheep and beef farm. It will be Dylan Brunton’s first time competing in a regional final. He has a Bachelor of Science majoring in ecology and zoology, and is 2IC on a 510 cow dairy farm at Cardiff. Guy Harvey contract milks 220 cows in nearby Kaponga. “I really enjoy the networking side of the contest,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to meet people.” They’ll go up against Kieran McCahon, who recently completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Massey University. The regional final is being held at Crawford Green, Miramar. The evening show, hosted by Te Radar, will be at the Wellington College. It is the 50th anniversary of the iconic agricultural competition, which was first held in 1969.

Sunflower fundraiser for struggling farmers by Denise Gunn
Funds raised through selling sunflowers grown by Okato farmer Will Fleming will help farmers struggling through the drought. Mr Fleming planted close to 500 sunflowers around the outside of his maize crop in mid-November. Funds raised will go directly to the Taranaki Rural Support Trust. It’s the second year Mr Fleming, a rural facilitator for the trust, has planted sunflowers to raise money. Last year more than $2,000 was raised for the trust. Lions Clubs in the region have supported the fundraising initiative as well, with volunteers picking the flowers and selling them outside stores across the region. The sunflowers were sold at the Stratford and New Plymouth farmers markets too. Taranaki Rural Support Trust coordinator Marcia Paurini said a couple of cafes and banks also sold the sunflowers. “Sunflowers are a sign of hope.” The final amount collected this year is still being tallied. “Funds will go towards care packages for drought-affected farmers,” she said. Care packages include groceries. In December last year, the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Communities, Damien O’Connor, declared a drought in parts of the lower North Island. The affected areas include Taranaki region and western parts of the ManawatuWhanganui and Wellington regions.
Taranaki Rural Support Trust coordinator Marcia Paurini urges drought-affected farmers and growers to contact the organisation
Concerns had been highlighted about the welfare of Taranaki farmers and their livestock, due to a dwindling supply of supplementary feed on the back of a wet winter and spring. The classification gives Rural Support Trusts a $160,000 funding boost to help serve their communities. “Things are dire,” said Ms Paurini. “Older farmers say they haven’t seen conditions like this for 40 years.” The Ministry for Primary Industries will
continue to monitor the conditions across the dry areas. Farmers and growers are urged to contact their Rural Support Trust for advice. “We had 35 calls in the month of January,” said Ms Paurini. “We can help.” To contact the Rural Support Trust, phone 0800 787 254.

THE FUTURE
BRANDERSON HOMES LTD PRE BUILT HOMES
Planting a billion trees in ten years is a huge challenge. The government’s aim is long term – for employment and climate change targets decades into the future. Today’s children will get the rewards when they are grown up. The new trees could add 500,000 hectares to New Zealand’s established 1.7 million hectares of plantation forests.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
ACCOMMODATES GROWTH by Denise Gunn Since its formation in July 1994, the North Taranaki Jersey Club has grown to a membership of 40 families located almost entirely around Mount Taranaki.
T
he club was formed following a decision to amalgamate the existing New Plymouth and Inglewood Jersey clubs. The New Plymouth Jersey Club was formed in 1910 and the Inglewood Jersey Cattle Club in 1921. North Taranaki Jersey Club member Fiona Henchman said membership is a mix of older retired members, active farming members milking Jerseys on the coast and up to the Egmont National Park boundaries, and younger members still producing further future members. “The majority of members are in the Inglewood area, and a group of coastal members in the Okato area as well.”
The club’s aim is to promote the Jersey breed, and to encourage, educate and support new members within a friendly, active, social club. The first Jersey cow, Jenny, arrived in the province in 1876. Jenny was born on Killymoon Farm in the Rangitikei, and the offspring of two Jersey Island imports — a bull named The Old Marquis and a cow, Lucy. The Old Marquis and Lucy were imported, along with another cow, Duchess, by Thomas Syers. Shortly after their arrival, the three Jerseys were acquired by Laurence Daniell of Killymoon Farm. Mr Daniell presented Jenny to Edith Halcombe who farmed with her husband, Arthur, near Marton.

The couple had built-up a respected Jersey stud in the region. In 1876, Mrs Halcombe sold two-year-old Jenny for the sum of £40 to Bell Block dairyman Mr W K Hulke. Mr Hulke put a halter on Jenny and led her 199 kilometres from Marton along the beach to his farm. Jenny was entered into the New Plymouth Show, winning ‘Champion Dairy Cow of Taranaki, over all the other breeds. Taranaki has been regarded as the home of the Jersey for many years. “Mt Egmont is the dominating feature of our district, and has 365 rivers and streams coming from its slopes, along with countless pockets of original bush still found in its dissected rolling hill contour ,” said Fiona. “With it comes a generally reliably high rainfall, and reasonable temperatures for farming cattle outside all year round, where the Jersey is supreme with her black feet, lighter frame and thick woolly winter coat. Further, the Jersey has a 20% advantage in the production of milk solids in relation to body weight, can handle hot sun far better than a black cow, has superior ease of calving, handling and high fertility to get back in calf. “The fact she produces milk with a high fat and protein test, especially with butter in such high demand is only good for the breed,” she said. “Some very good bulls have been bred in the Taranaki province; Maori Bestman, Merivale Senator, Royals Green Elmo (also marketed as Taranak), Glenariff Pasco, Glenariff Panache, Te Henui Casper Donald, Tawa Grove Maunga, and Whitimore Man Zealot.” “Recent graduates include Puketawa Superstition, Tawa Grove Tana and Puketawa Connacht.” A recent publication has reported that out of the 30 top bulls ranked in the Ranking of Active Sires (RAS) list, 16 were now Jersey bulls, with Jersey genes forming 67% of the total genetic

A herd visit by club members make-up of the team, and 33% of the other breeds. “The breed is gaining momentum.” The club’s annual on farm show is well supported and is a challenging two days for the judges. “It is one of New Zealand’s largest club shows.” The club’s 26 trophies are awarded for classes in several of the club’s competitions. The oldest of these trophies, the R C Bishop Trophy for the highest producing cow in the A+B-C competition, was donated to the Inglewood Jersey Cattle Club by Eric Rowan ESQ in 1949. “The ‘A’ stands for fat, ‘B’ being protein, and ‘C’ is milk volume, which is deducted at usually 4 cents a litre, meaning the higher testing cows have the advantage as there is less water to process out of the milk,” said Fiona. After this trophy was won three times, it was kept and then donated back to the club in 1992. In addition to the competitions, the club also enjoys farm visits throughout the year to see the new intake of heifers in the spring, member’s herds, and usually a trip out of the province to
visit another club’s members. Potluck tea and winter dinners are another important part of belonging to their club, as well as the usual club meetings and other club competitions. The club’s patron Des Alexander has filled the role since 2012 when the previous patron, the late Sonny Atkinson, resigned and expressed his wish for Des to take on the position. Troy Hughes is the club’s president, vice president is Jay Luckin, and Barry Harvey is secretary with the help of his wife Rochelle. “Peter Ayles as treasurer has helped other club members and was especially helpful to me when I was the secretary,” said Fiona. “There is always someone in the club you can contact to seek advice or for help.”

Sheep springing forward by Ann Morgan With the aim to deliver the nutritious goodness of New Zealand sheep milk to consumers across the world, the Spring Sheep Milk Co. are combining their knowledge to create the best practices for farmers to deliver top quality products.
“O
ur goal is to build a sustainable, high-value primary industry that is innovative and collaborative through the PGP programme,” says CEO Nick Hammond. New Zealand has specialised in meat and wool sheep for the last 150 years, whilst Europe uses milking breeds. “Globally, sheep milk is a US$8billion industry. In Europe they are blown away that we aren’t milking sheep, and it’s a tragedy as we are phenomenal at dairy products and renowned for animal husbandry in sheep.” The Spring Sheep farm has more than 2,000 sheep and utilises state-of-the-art technology to ensure the milk is kept at the highest quality possible. “We use modern, world-class low agitation
systems and protect milk quality every step of the way. The milk is held at less than two degrees Celsius,” says Nick. Lambing is from August 1, and the milking season finishes around the end of March. The production is 15-20 ewes per hectare, similar to a system three or four dairy herd. “People sensitive to regular cow’s milk, generally don’t have trouble consuming sheep milk. Sheep milk is naturally gentle on the stomach and has up to twice the amount of calcium and protein, and it tastes delicious too. “Creating the optimum New Zealand farming system for dairy sheep and growing an industry is our goal. People in the Mediterranean and Asia grew up on alternative dairy, and are not surprised at its quality nutrition and

Dairy sheep are relatively new to New Zealand but have been farmed in Europe for centuries
enabled high-performance sheep to be imported and they can produce 400 litres across flocks — or up to 1,000 litres in top performers per year, making a farming system economically viable.” The PGP Sheep — Horizon Three programme has been established for long term innovation. It plans to build an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable sheep milking industry targeting $200M-$700M in sales by 2030. The programme has gained positive results and has had a great response to a tailored nutrition programme that doubled milk yield on a per ewe basis. “New Zealand sheep have adapted to our environment for wool and meat. We need systems to allow dairy sheep
to thrive here. Our pasture is one of our advantages, but we are researching other needs such as nutrition and indoor housing,” says Nick. “The current exporting sheep milk farms run 2,000-4,000 sheep. That scale is not accessible to the normal farmer due to farm size so within the PGP programme, we are launching two smaller pilot sites in Cambridge. “A lot of farms are around 40 hectares but no longer viable, as cow dairy sites due to economic and environmental pressures. “The environmental pressures for sheep milking are lower, and we are aiming to produce a model so farmers can change over by making a few slight changes for a small investment. We
want to develop the skill sets of New Zealanders. We brought over John Ryrie, our farm manager, from the UK — he was born and raised in Scotland and has more than 20 years’ experience working on sheep dairy farms throughout Europe. Ultimately, we want New Zealanders to be successful at this.” The pilot farms will promote and train people with as much knowledge as possible. “We as Kiwis are not competing with each other, but with Europeans as they have been doing it for decades. By sharing our concepts, others will improve on them and we want to create and maintain the collaborative culture so everyone wins — it is about kiwis helping kiwis.”

Nestled in the foothills of the Brynderwyns, near the small town of Mangawhai in Northland, sits the picturesque olive grove, Olives on the Hill, owned by Chris and Linda Smith. With its Mediterranean climate, the beautiful rural setting is also home to The Grove Supply Co. They provide anything that a small to medium olive grower would need, from harvesting equipment including the fantastic Mambo Karbonium, brilliant deleafers, nets, rakes and bins. “We have a huge range of fustis and stainless steel tanks, taps, filters, cappers, fruit presses and an amazing olive press/ malaxer combination,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” Chris and Linda recently took the opportunity to travel to Italy, visiting Sansone and Zanon, their two main suppliers of plant and machinery. Sansone and Zanon are high-quality brands; and The Grove Supply Co. is the only official distributor of Sansone products in New Zealand. She reflects that the trip was incredibly successful. Meeting the people who they do business with face-to-face has enabled strong relationships to be established, that will result in benefits being passed on to customers of The Grove Supply Co. “We’ve managed to negotiate very good deals with both Sansone and Zanon, which will form the basis of a review of all our equipment prices this year. There will be some very special deals resulting from the prices that we have negotiated.” After visiting their Italian suppliers, Linda and Chris moved on to Spain for 10 days,

Farm ownership goal by Denise Gunn Manutahi sharemilkers Owen Clegg and Hollie Wham were born and bred townies with limited ties to the agricultural industry. Now the couple are into their second season 50-50 sharemilking with 185 cows.
O
wen’s first taste of farming was at the age of 13, when he started helping out on a farm in Okiawa during the school holidays. When he turned 16, the farm owner offered him the full-time farm assistant position as it became available. When Hollie finished school she was unsure which career path to follow. “Then I met Owen and got hooked on farming, we both always loved animals from a young age, regardless of what
they were.” she said. Owen worked as a farm assistant on the Okiawa farm for three years, before taking on an assistant manager position on the neighbouring farm for two seasons. Hollie began relief milking on the same farm, staying on for two seasons. “We went variable order sharemilking on one 200 cow farm in Ohangai before we went 50/50 sharemilking,” said Hollie. Saving hard, keeping the theory ‘cash is king’ in mind, was the key to the

couple buying their herd. They bought 134 Friesian/Friesian cross cows and 40 heifers from a Waikato farm that was being sold up. “Last season, in February, due to the crazy grass growing weather, we bought 15 in-milk spring calving cows to top up our numbers.” This increased the couple’s herd to 189 cows. They then bought 25 incalf heifers as replacements for the 2017/18 season. “Next season our own replacements come in,” said Hollie. The couple are now sharemilking on a 70ha (56ha effective) coastal Manutahi farm, with a 10ha runoff just out of Patea. Around 3.5ha of turnips are grown each year and as much silage is made as the weather permits. The runoff provides one main cut of silage and a cut of hay. “If we are lucky we can get a second cut of silage either before the hay or in March.” Up to 120t of maize and some PKE is brought in each season. This season they are milking 185 cows, up 11 from the previous season. The couple achieved 73,383kgMS or 421kgMS/cow last season. The couple appreciate the career progression offered within the dairy industry. “We get out of it what we put in. Whether it is the payout or weather affecting us, there is never a dull moment and we are always made to try and find ways to operate more effectively, efficiently and sustainably.”

Last year’s extremely wet winter and spring was followed by hot weather and windy conditions, drying the farm out earlier than usual. “We went from being drowned to dry and crispy in a month.” Although the couple have farmed in dry conditions in the past, the early dry conditions proved challenging. “This just meant talking more often with the farm owners in regards to feed situations, culling, buying supplement and drying off earlier, in any of our jobs,
the cows are our priorities and not the financial gains.” said Hollie. Working hard to achieve their goals, the couple have appreciated support and advice received from mentors. Farm ownership is their ultimate goal. “We would also like to give back and help future generations where we can. We are just two townies giving this farming thing a go.” Owen and Hollie are both members of South Taranaki Young Farmers and have entered this year’s Taranaki Dairy Industry Awards.

A real time saver With a 340 hectare beef block to run single-handedly, Kaiwaka farmer Marty Roest has to manage his time carefully. The farm currently has around 23km of wire and batten fences and 32km of four-wire electric fences, so the hours he spends on fence building and maintenance can add up significantly. After seeing the Stockade ST400i Cordless Fencing Stapler in action at last year’s Fieldays, Marty says the decision to purchase one was easy. “One of the biggest benefits of the ST400i is that it is very fast and easy to use,” he says. “A farm this size is a one-man operation, so anything I can do that saves me time is very worthwhile.” Marty explains another benefit of the machine is its ability to use barbed staples, which have longer holding power — saving time restapling further down the track. The most powerful cordless stapler on the market, the ST400i can drive nine gauge (4mm) staples into hardwood and treated pine posts with ease. “It’s very quick and easy to adjust the depth for
different types of fencing,” says Marty. “The stapler also has an insulator attachment, which lets you quickly and easily mount insulators for electric fencing.” Free from compressors and hoses, the ST400i is easy to transport and use. And with the limestone terrain on Marty’s farm, that’s a big bonus. “Much of the farmland here gets quite pugged, so you wouldn’t want to drive over it with a compressor in tow because you’d end up damaging it,” he says. “I also like the fact that the stapler has battery and gas level gauges so you can easily tell if you’re getting low,” Marty says. The ST400i is neatly packaged in a sturdy compact case, which also houses dual batteries, an AC charger, the
instruction manual and safety glasses. “The rugged case means I can just tie it on the back of the farm bike and keep it with me whenever I need to do repairs. And because it has a belt clip, you can attach it to your belt or a fence to keep it handy.” “Anything I can do that saves me time is very worthwhile”
ARE YOUR GIRLS LAYING GOLDEN EGGS? No, we didn’t think so!
At around four kilograms in weight, the stapler is easily manageable, comfortable to use and can be operated with one hand, allowing you to keep your second hand safely out of harm’s way. “I’m really pleased with the performance of the new stapler — definitely a very valuable investment for any farmer who spends time on fencing.”

It’s more than wool, which keeps sheep dry. Prolan NZ has enhanced the use of lanolin in sheep’s wool to manufacture industrial lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases, which stop rust. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long-term protection. Bikes can be water blasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value. There are also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser and trucking companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and fertiliser loaders’ chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust since using Prolan products, less downtime on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values. Even vehicle testing stations are recommending the product to customers having problems with rust issues. Prolan has a strong following with key distributors Farmlands, Ullrich Aluminium and Anzor fasteners. The product is so versatile it is sought after by farmers, engineers, boaties, scaffolders, marinas, concrete companies and panelbeaters, with the added bonus it is safe to use and easy on the environment. With the great summer we are experiencing many of us are out on the water. The use of a life jacket is a must for small craft. If you

DAIRYING WITH EFFLUENT
Effluent without the odours by Andy Bryenton
It’s a universal truth that what comes out of the south end of a north-facing beast is going to smell. It’s part of the earthy aroma of the countryside, but when effluent is collected in a containment system — either above ground or a lined pond — the smell fades into the background. Effluent that’s stored in a pond that’s working — filled with hungry, productive bacteria and microbes — is unlikely to produce clouds of odour. But seasonal temperature changes, overloading of ponds, massive influxes of effluent or conditions, which don’t allow spreading and irrigation to lighten the load can cause things to go wrong in the complex microbiota of the pond. Often it’s not even a smell, which alerts the farmer to an issue brewing — the colour of the pond itself can change. Generally speaking a green pond is no issue — unless it’s a scum of green on the top, caused by algae. If the algae all dies at once then a noxious smell could result. Similarly, a pink pond may look alarming, but it actually means that sulphur-devouring bacteria are hard at work stopping smelly sulphur dioxide from escaping. A black or grey pond on the other hand is likely filled with anaerobic bacteria, which may turn the water milky white or pearly grey as the temperature rises. This is definitely a sign that stinking sulphides are on the way. Perhaps the biggest warning sign is a blue-green pond, caused by cyanobacteria. Treatment for this condition is likely to be required quickly — aeration, hydrogen peroxide or even

powerful algae killing compounds to zero out the toxic threat. Odours can also arise then the pH level of a pond drops below 6.5. In this case, the application of lime could help, along with some vigorous aeration and stirring. In a healthy pond, anaerobic bacteria do half of the work, while aerobic bacteria finish the job. The gases they release have thus been treated twice,
and are not as ‘fragrant’ as they may otherwise be. Getting the balance right can go all the way back to the construction of your storage system, so if it’s time to upgrade or maintain, go to dairynz. co.nz/environment/effluent/effluentwof and run the checklist. It’ll make for more pleasant pastures for you and your neighbours!

National testing for Mycoplasma bovis The Ministry for Primary Industries and its dairy industry partners have decided to extend the Mycoplasma bovis milk testing already underway into a national milk surveillance programme.
While there is no indication that the disease is present beyond the areas currently identified, checking for other possible regional clusters is essential to building a complete picture of the disease in New Zealand. The programme will involve testing three milk samples from every dairy farm. One sample will be taken from bulk milk as part of the regular sampling process at milk collection. Farmers will also be required to provide two samples from ‘discard milk’ (milk unsuitable for collection, for example, from cows with mastitis). Mycoplasma bovis is more easily identified in milk taken from otherwise sick animals, which makes testing of the discard milk a valuable surveillance tool. The extended milk

testing programme enhances the existing nationwide Mycoplasma bovis surveillance activity, which includes tracing of animal movements from infected and suspect farms, vets looking for signs of the disease, testing of any animals with clinical signs, and testing all mastitis milk sent to laboratories. Mycoplasma bovis is not a food safety risk. It is a disease that affects animal welfare and production and only affects bovines, including dairy cows and beef cattle. It is common in many foodproducing nations such as Australia, the United States, and in Europe. The programme is expected to begin in February and will be rolled out region by region. More information will be provided by MPI as the details of the programme are finalised.
