Limitations with farm nutrient model

Integrity community media

by Denise Gunn

The Taranaki Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by Integrity Community Media, a privately owned NZ company.

A recent report, by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE), has vindicated Taranaki Regional Council’s (TRC) long-held view regarding the unsuitability of the Overseer nutrient management model as a regulatory tool.

Overseer is commonly used as a tool by New Zealand farmers and advisors, as well as national and regional policymakers, to improve nutrient use on farms. It is jointly owned by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), the Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (FANZ), and AgResearch. Although seven regional councils throughout New Zealand use Overseer as a regulatory tool to help set limits around some nutrients, TRC is among nine, which do not. TRC’s director-environment quality Gary Bedford said Overseer is a model, which gives a theoretical result based on the numbers fed into it. “As such, it cannot be accurate enough for regulatory use. This was borne out in the detailed study commissioned by the TRC in 2015, and again in the PCE’s report.” Mr Bedford said given the limitation of models, the TRC focusses on

interventions that are proven to be effective. “Our flagship riparian management programme is getting most encouraging results, as borne out in an independent study by NIWA last year. “We are also requiring dairy farmers to move to land-based effluent disposal, which will also pay dividends in freshwater quality.” The PEC report follows the council’s independent environmental monitoring, a NIWA study, and several other studies and reports, which have given TRC confidence that it is heading in the right direction. “An independent report commissioned by the council in 2015 reached broadly similar conclusions to that of the PCE — that Overseer is a useful on-farm management tool but most unsuitable for use as a regulatory tool.” “Our aim is to achieve further improvements by working alongside the regional community,” said Mr Bedford.

This year’s No 8 Wire National Art Award entries have opened with a share of $8,500 in prize money on offer. The annual competition, managed by Waikato Museum and partnered by rural supplies co-operative Farmlands, encourages artists, inventors and DIY enthusiasts to create a sculptural artwork made predominantly from No 8 wire, along with other agriculturalbased materials. Waikato Museum director, Cherie Meecham, said number eight wire poses a particular challenge for sculpture, and its place in Kiwi culture should be reflected in the entries. “Number eight wire is hardy and not easily manipulated,” she said. “Creating art from such material requires vision, planning, skill and patience. It is challenging but offers unique rewards.” New Zealand National Fieldays Society president, Peter Carr, said the award brings awareness and appreciation to an innovative piece of agricultural history. “It’s fantastic to see what people are able to create out of the iconic number eight wire and the brilliant stories that go along with each piece. “This award encourages talent and creativity, turning a simple agricultural product into a thought-provoking piece of art that tells a great story.” This year’s judge is associate professor Linda Tyler who has taught art history at Canterbury, Victoria, Waikato and Auckland universities, as well as Unitec and Otago Polytechnic. Ms Tyler has also been an art curator at Waikato Museum, the Hocken Library, and Gus Fisher Gallery. She is now convenor of Museums and Cultural Heritage at the University of Auckland. Entrants are required to rank the materials used and list the types or gauges of wire used in their work, to ensure only those that are predominantly number eight wire are chosen. Finalists are selected by viewing photos of the work and artists’ statements on a digital judging

magnolias by Denise Gunn Moving to an 8,000 square metre property near Waitara in 2005, gave Vance and Kathryn Hooper a blank canvas of land to grow magnolias. Since then the couple’s magnolias have been exported around the world and won an award in Germany.

V

ance’s early interest in plants began around the age of 10 when his grandmother gave him some cactus cuttings. Seven years later he took up a horticultural career with Duncan and Davies. “In 1981, I visited the old Duncan and Davies layering beds and stumbled on some old species in full flower,” said Vance. “They were stunningly bright in the depths of late winter. There’s something about the brightness of magnolia flowers on bare branches that stimulates something deep in the psyche.” Gardening runs in Kathryn’s family. Her mother, Mary Dickson, a keen

gardener, has opened her garden every year for the Powerco Taranaki Garden Festival since the event began more than 30 years ago. The year she moved into town was the only exception. Her garden is also a five-star Garden of Significance. Kathryn finds gardening good therapy away from her work as deputy principal at Highlands Intermediate. The Hoopers also open their garden, Magnolia Grove, to visitors during the festival and the magnolia flowering season. Three years after buying their property, the opportunity arose to buy the neighbouring land, giving them a total of four hectares.

Vance and Kathryn Hooper’s award-winning magnolias have been exported around the world

Vance said this enabled them to double the garden size, treble the field nursery and start growing trees for mail order. Cryptomeria hedges were planted to provide windbreaks, along with other species. “We now have a woodland garden, which is like a forest, and it mostly looks after itself. “Kathryn has pockets of more intensive planting, which adds depth to the plant collections and little surprises for the garden visitors. “The garden was designed to showcase the magnolias we grow, so we open on weekends in August and September when the magnolias are in flower.” The couple has open ground seedbeds for growing rootstocks as a crop in the nursery. Magnolia hybrids are grown as an add-on crop. Close to 40,000 seedlings are grown in the ground each year. “One-year-old magnolia seedlings are planted in the nursery for a year and then planted out in groves to flower once they are a good size,” said Vance. Magnolias are also used as riparian planting on the Waiongana River, which forms the back boundary of their property. The Hooper’s hybrid magnolia breeding line now stems back 32 years and is aimed at producing smaller growing garden plants. Vance said some bigger trees that have appeared in the seedlings are so spectacular they cannot be ignored. “The ideal magnolia should set flowers in the first year from budding so you can tap into the impulse buying market to some degree. “That also has the advantage that the customer can see what they are getting if they are flowering in the garden centre. When starting out breeding hybrid magnolias, Vance checks the first hundred seedlings with a magnifying glass to work out what is possible.

The couple open their garden, Magnolia Grove, during the magnolia flowering season

Magnolia Grove is one of the few nurseries in New Zealand to grow most of the trees from seed, right through to the grafting process then on to sell. “Our varieties have gone worldwide, from Scandinavia to Australia, and Ukraine to Japan.” Kathryn said it is very satisfying to see their varieties grown around the world. The biggest highlight to date was an early morning phone call from Germany, informing them that their Magnolia Genie had won best new plant at the IPM Show at Essen. Due to the nature of the cropping system, a very seasonal routine is followed at Magnolia Grove. Summer is crop management with budding and starting in late January. Seed collection stretches through to April depending on the species.

• Stump grinding, cracking or removal • Land Development & general farm work • Whole Tree chipping

“Autumn is time to prepare field crops for lifting, cleaning and stratification of seeds, and final check counts for winter sales,” said Vance. “Mail order generally starts in June when trees come from the field, and lasts through until October.” Grafting takes place in August, followed by seedling processing and planting in September. Kathryn said the garden is fine-tuned in October during the lead-up to the garden festival. November is set aside for seed sowing and catching up with potting, trimming and staking to prepare the crops for the growing season.

INSPIRED TO FLY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN NZI Rural Womens’ business awards — Rural Champion winner Fly My Sky owners Robyn and Keith McKenzie were living in a caravan by a river on the west coast in the early 1970s after returning from Australia where Keith gained his helicopter pilots’ licence.

T

he company won the 2018 award with Robyn being a director of the business. “Australia was the nearest place for a New Zealander to train to be a helicopter pilot and the west coast was the only job Keith could get in New Zealand,” says Robyn. “He was working on venison recovery with Helicopters NZ, a Nelson-based company. Other helicopter operations were owned by the pilots, and that inspired us to do the same.” In 1980 Keith was chief pilot for James Aviation, and the company decided to close their helicopter base in

Taumarunui, so the couple purchased it. “The opportunity was rare, and we borrowed almost all the money. We had two young children and whilst Keith flew I canvassed for helicopter work. We managed to pay the loan back in five years.” The McKenzies have since provided transport services, rescue missions and a variety of services for people in rural situations. “We opened a twice a day, rural scheduled flight service between Auckland and Whangarei days before Fly My Sky was a winner at the awards. of our brand,” says Robyn. “For Keith one of the most memorable missions was helping a police officer capture a mass murderer in hilly mountainous terrain, which he knew like the back of his hand. “They both were aware of the unpredictable mental state of the person but armed with intense local knowledge, helicopter skills learnt through mustering cattle around trees in Australia, plus the power of the Hughes 500D helicopter, they captured the offender before more tragedy occurred.” Keith was awarded a QSM for his assistance to police and community. They have completed many other missions including going to a young boy who had a fatal horse accident. Robyn says such memories highlight the perils of remote living. Keith has more than 23,000 hours rural flying experience and was an instructor on planes and helicopters. “His has amazing stories from all over New Zealand. He has helped build the ski lifts on Ruapehu and the Remarkables. He is used to different weather conditions and going from tarmac to grass landing strips. He had retired but has returned to teach the younger pilots.“ Flying to Great Barrier Island is also a regular service, and takes 30 minutes from Auckland. “People on Great Barrier Island have been attending Rural Women’s Network for some 70 years and participate in things like educational programmes for children and knitting beanies for babies. They have speakers from all over the world visit, and it is awesome to fly to the island daily and hear encouraging stories. The barrier is like going overseas, and the beautiful beaches are very invigorating with clear water. “It is a nice place for farmers to have a retreat — they go fishing and walk the beaches or up Mt Hobson. The landscape is always changing, and

you can book a boat tour. The wildlife is wonderful including the brown duck, which is endangered. “Sixty-five per cent of the island is conservation estate, and they are regenerating the kauri trees as the original were cut down to make boats in the 1920s. “Because we are a lifestyle company we sold the helicopter and now have four planes. I am so busy at work it is a challenge to get out, and it is the same for women in farming — you can become isolated, and I firmly believe rural women has an amazing support network. “We want to build a quick and efficient service to Whangarei as it is handy for Northland residents. We fly on charter to other areas across the country and can land at the small community airfields as well as the provincial airports. “If there is a group of nine, it spreads the costs and sometimes makes sense

It is a privilege to be a part of all that goes on around the countryside of New Zealand. Every part of what we do helps others in one way or another.”

he first time entrant’s interest in sculpting began 30 years ago through his engineering work. “I was making fancy wrought iron gates, and that led to being creative,” said Terry. “As a sideline, I was making little horse chairs for children. Then I started making different things; a crayfish, a weta, a fish and started making general ornaments.” Terr y said he likes making different items. “I’m always making things around home, such as fancy gates. Wrought iron gates are very arty.” As Terry owns and runs the Kimbolton Garage, he works on his sculptures in the evenings or weekends. With last year’s sculpture festival held in the area, Terry decided to enter. He estimates spending close to 150 hours

on last year’s winning sculpture Haast Eagle — Pouakai. “My neighbour Ben came up with the eagle idea,” said Terry. “Then I thought, what angle am I going to make it from.” Terry said deciding on the angle is the starting point. “You have to be careful how you present it.” Visits to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington to study the Haast Eagle followed. The Haast Eagle is extinct and lived around the time of the moa. Terry estimates spending as much time thinking about and researching the eagle as he did sculpting it. “Attention to detail makes a good sculpture,” he said. His Haast Eagle sculpture was created with shearing cutters, horseshoes and old tools. Terry was born and bred in Feilding. He and his wife Shirley moved to Kimbolton 28 years ago, and have owned the Kimbolton Garage since 1990. The local community supports Terry through dropping off materials for him to use in his sculptures. A busload of Australian tourists also called in to view his Haast Eagle sculpture. The tourists mentioned that Terry’s sculpture would be up amongst the best at the rural sculpture festival in the New South Wales town of Lockhart. The Kimbolton Sculpture Festival is based on the Spirit of the Land Lockhart Festival, which attracts thousands of people to the four-day event. Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Trust chairman Tony Waugh said the festival is an opportunity for rural people to have a go, as many may not have considered themselves artists. Last year’s festival saw the number eight wire mentality come out in force in the shape of more than 100 entries from Timaru in the south to Kaeo in the north and everywhere in between. Artists conveyed to festival organisers and judges how entering the awards had given them the opportunity to express their passion for art, and to showcase making something out of nothing. Terry acknowledged the work of the other entrants in last year’s festival.

“I would like to pay particular tribute to the People’s Choice Winner with the horse. It had real attention to detail,” he said. The People’s Choice Winner was Regan Cooper with his sculpture, Tyrone the Retyred Horse. This life-sized black horse was made with tyres. There are plans for Terry’s Haast Eagle to be displayed for public viewing in an area across the road from Kimbolton Garage. Tony said he wants to see farmers and others who live on the land, try their

The true four-arm irrigator Introducing the Vaughan extra heavy duty low pressure travelling irrigator. Along with Vaughan’s other great range of low pressure travelling irrigators, the Quad x4 is the latest in the range. With four rotating arms it throws twice as much water, and with four speeds it can travel at more than two to four times faster than other irrigators, cutting down on expensive running costs. Other imported irrigators claim the same capacities, but with only two outlets and small nozzle sizes, this is not possible. Manufactured in Australia by Vaughan Irrigators you can be assured of a quality product. This irrigator will be the way of the future. Quad x4 offers the same application — but only half the time. Features: • 20,000 gallons an hour capability only achieved by having four outlets • Sensitive four-way steering for accurate directional control • Automatic drive shut off

• Four-speed selections • Four-wheel configuration • Hot dipped galvanised for extreme stability • 300-metre run • Low centre of gravity

BUSINESS PROFILE

Quality products — built to last In June 2017, Craig Korff established MufflersNZ at its current location — the former Subaru factory in Waitara, Taranaki. Craig had recently sold his successful panelbeating and truck painting business of 25 years and saw an opportunity to continue a long history of muffler manufacturing on this site. He then teamed up with Nigel Mabin who has more than 30 years history of muffler manufacturing. Together they took on the considerable task of making all the tooling and dies for pressing out various components. When assembled these create mufflers for a vast range of agricultural, earthmoving equipment and trucks, along with all sorts of industrial and plant equipment applications. MufflersNZ has a growing database of muffler drawings and stock on the shelf. If the team doesn’t have a diagram, they can easily make from a sample. Only top quality New Zealand-made materials are used in all mufflers. In addition to all the usual names which include Hitachi, CAT and Kobelco, MufflersNZ also manufactures custom and one-off speciality mufflers. Spark arresters and their hugely popular braziers have also been in high demand.

Prolan a lanolin-based industrial lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made here in NZ has many uses within the agricultural and industrial sectors for preventing corrosion and lubricating machinery. Commercial operators, as well as farmers, have found Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade when applied to a vehicle chassis is excellent as a rust preventative on 4WD, fertiliser loaders, truck, bus and motorhome chassis. In fact, it works that well that many vehicle-testing stations are recommending a coating of Prolan to prevent corrosion. A spray of Prolan on moldboards and ploughing equipment prevents rust and keeps them clean and in good condition. It is the unique ability of the lanolin in Prolan that penetrates into metal components that prevents corrosion. Prolan saves the life of machinery exposed to air and moisture whilst out in the field or during storage. Around the workshop and for general maintenance Prolan’s ‘Enduro Medium grade’ works well as a general lubricant — penetrating into seized bolts — chains and other moving parts. Prolan is so versatile it replaces many other workshop lubricants and is used to stop squeaks as well as to prevent rust long term. Farmers and contractors have noticed that Prolan

STOP RUST

Prolan saves the life of your machinery

stays on once applied; saving repetitive maintenance. For example, an orchard mulching contractor found by applying Prolan to his flails on his machine he saved time on repeat applications, instead of lubricating daily he used Prolan once a week for maintenance. A coating of Prolan Enduro Medium grade is excellent on quad bike chassis as it prevents corrosion caused by manure and salt. With the added benefit that a cold water blast will not remove the Prolan coating, it stays on preventing corrosion and keeping the frame in top shape. In the Prolan product range, there is also an anti-seize grease, which is very

popular for assembly of components. A small smear of Prolan grease applied to bolts or pins when assembling equipment ensures they can be undone years later. It also minimises parts replacement as these can be removed easier instead of by force which results in breakage if no anti-seize has been applied. The Prolan product range is made up of natural NZ wool lanolin, which ticks the boxes for environmentally friendliness and biodegradability — safe on the environment as well as the user. Prolan saves time, work and money. By applying a spray of Prolan to farm machinery and equipment, it lasts a lot longer and increases its resale value.

Leaving an impressive legacy Two long-serving members of the board overseeing the FMG Young Farmer of the Year are set to retire.

Cole Groves and Dean Rabbidge will step down from the NZ Young Farmers contest board in July

Cole Groves, 32, and Dean Rabbidge, 33, will step down from the NZ Young Farmers contest board in July. The pair joined the committee in 2014, and both have a long history with the national agri-business contest. “Cole and Dean are tireless volunteers, driven by a desire to give back to the primary industries,” said NZYF contest board chair Rebecca Brown. “Their contribution has been immense — they have helped overhaul the contest to ensure it will continue to innovate, thrive and remain relevant.” The FMG Young Farmer of the Year is an unrivalled event, which challenges and educates the next generation of food producers. Dean is a sheep, beef and dairy farmer in Wyndham, and won the Otago/ Southland regional final in 2013 and 2014. He served as the committee chair from 2016 to 2018. “The two achievements I am most proud of are getting the new board structure over the line and developing a formal strategy for the contest,” he said. “I got a lot out of competing, and this role has been a way for me to give back to the contest.” Cole is an Ashburton dairy farmer and won the Tasman regional final in 2011. He started serving on the committee during his time as chair of NZ Young Farmers and was appointed for a second term in 2017. “The formal strategy, which we launched last year, has given the contest some much-needed direction. It will ensure the event showcases the primary industries in an engaging and exciting way,” he said.

“I have made some really good friends through my involvement with the contest and grown my own skills at the same time.” The NZYF Contest Board is made up of eight people, including four appointed members. Applications are being sought from people interested in serving on the board are not required to be current NZ Young Farmers members. Rebecca says this is a great opportunity for young people looking to broaden their governance skills and help drive involvement in the agri-food sector. Applications open on March 1 and close on April 15. Application forms will be available to download from the NZ Young Farmers website. Two successful candidates will be appointed following the grand final in July.

I am often asked whether cartilage lost through osteoarthritis can regenerate through taking supplements. Maybe I can answer this with an example. Last year I received a call from a man in his late 60s with osteoarthritis in his knees. It really affected his mobility and reduced his quality of life. I put him on an antiinflammatory eating plan and added two supplements. The first was omega-3 fish oil at therapeutic doses. I then added my joint formula at a double dose. That meant he was taking 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin and 1,600mg of glucosamine with 400mg of high potency 95% curcumin turmeric extract. Within three months the swelling had gone down and the pain was abating. Now six months later he has regained his mobility and can now undertake the recreational pastimes he had previously stopped. The evidence that cartilage damaged by arthritis can significantly regenerate is poor. There is evidence that high doses of chondroitin can help cartilage, but it seems that once

your cartilage is lost — then it is gone. That, of course, begs the question as to why his knees improved so much. There is good evidence that high levels of chondroitin can help improve the function of whatever cartilage remains. It does this by giving the specialised cells called chondrocytes that maintain cartilage the raw materials to improve cartilage function. However, most of the improvements are likely from reducing inflammation within the joint capsule. Curcumin from turmeric, chondroitin sulphate and EPA from Fish oil are very antiinflammatory. Shutting down these inflammatory processes can help reduce swelling, fluid build-up and subsequently making joints more comfortable. The best approach is to contact me for a personalised joint health programme. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz.

Lambs versus ewes

At this time of year as sheep farmers begin thinking about preparing ewes for the next production cycle, they need to ask if they have enough high-quality feed available on-farm to both finish lambs and have all ewes in optimum condition going into mating? Farm systems scientist Tom Fraser says farmers need to start thinking about what they are going to do with the last of their store lambs because these lambs will soon be competing with ewes for high-quality feed going into mating. “Is it worth trying to put an extra two kilograms on your lambs at the expense of next year’s production? “Farmers need to think about their lamb finishing policy now, as if the ram goes out on April 1, they only have six weeks to get any light ewes up to a Body Condition Score of three ready for mating. “Sheep farmers should be Body Condition Scoring their ewes now, taking out the lighter ewes and putting them on high-quality lamb-finishing feed, while heavy ewes can be made to clean up rank pastures. “As a rule of thumb, ewes need to gain seven to nine kilograms to lift their Body Condition by one unit (lifting from a BCS of two to three), and at a weight gain of 100gms/day, this takes 70–90 days. Sheep and beef farms in most regions have an abundance of dry, rank feed. “The problem is where the whole farm is out of control in terms of feed quality, and farmers should act now to clean at least some areas so that when autumn rains arrive, they grow some high-quality feed. “Ewes are generally in good condition following a favourable spring and summer,

so while it is a matter of maintaining of the bulk of the ewes, there will be lighter body condition ewes that should be identified and given priority feed. Similarly, heavy ewes can be given poorer quality feed for a short time.” Tom says a good rain in late-February would be ideal. “Any earlier and there is a risk that annual clovers will strike and the resulting seedlings fry in hot temperatures. “By late February temperatures start to cool enough to favour the survival of these clovers which drive feed quality over autumn and spring.

Partnering for development DairyNZ is partnering in research aimed at developing a new cow survival and longevity trait, which will provide a greater focus on general robustness and good health. “DairyNZ and a team of researchers from AbacusBio and New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited are making significant inroads into developing a new selection index for improved cow survival and longevity genetics,” says DairyNZ senior scientist Claire Phyn. “On average, 21 per cent of cows are removed from herds each year. Most of these removals are due to avoidable reasons — mainly reproductive failure, mastitis, and other health and calving-

related disorders. Rearing replacements is costly, and involuntary culling takes away options of culling for very low milk production and temperament.” One strategy to reduce involuntary culling and increase the productive lifetime of dairy cows is to breed animals that are healthier, more fertile and last longer in the herd. “That is why we and our research partners, under the Pillars of a New Dairy System research programme are looking

CONTRACTING SPECIALISTS WITH OVER 50 YEARS EXPERIENCE WE SELL MAIZE SILAGE — TARANAKI WIDE ORDER NOW — FLEXIBLE PAYMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE

at new ways to evaluate cow longevity traits. These are traits currently included in Breeding Worth under the ‘residual survival’ Breeding Value. “Now, the researchers are developing an alternative ‘functional survival’ BV that better-excludes animal removals due to infertility or low production — this means the trait focusses on genetic selection for cows that are less likely to be culled for health-related reasons.” The ‘functional survival’ trait differs from the current ‘residual survival’ trait. It measures cow survival from one lactation to the next such as first to second, second to third, third to fourth lactation. The current trait measures cumulative survival from first to second, first to third, first to fourth lactation. “The ‘functional survival’ trait is an alternative way of accounting for culling reasons, as well as the relationships between survival and other traits, all of which change as cows get older. Several ‘traits other than production’ — commonly called TOP, have been identified as indirect predictors of functional survival. ‘Body condition score’ traits and ‘milking speed’ traits are predictors of early survival while the ‘udder overall’ and ‘straightness of rear legs’ traits

Claire Phyn, DairyNZ senior scientist

can predict late survival. “These TOP are measured during the peak of first lactation and improve the accuracy of genetic evaluations, especially for young bulls before they have any daughter survival records available. “Next, the researchers will evaluate the economic value of the new ‘functional survival’ trait, determine how it fits with the other BW traits and identify its effects on sire rankings.” For more information go to dairynz. co.nz/pillars.

Eradication on track

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

The latest Mycoplasma bovis Technical Advisory Group report confirms that the phased eradication response is on track. “The report states we have things to work on to give affected farmers the support they need,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand, technical policy manager Chris Houston.“We are making progress, and the DairyNZ and B+LNZ Compensation Assistance Team is an example of this, however, the deeper we get into this unprecedented response, the more we find we need to do.” The report also recommends improving general surveillance in the beef sector to confirm assumptions that the prevalence of the disease in the beef industry is low. “B+LNZ is working closely with MPI and partners to determine the best approach for beef surveillance. We all recognise this is a complicated issue that needs to be thought through carefully, taking into account the prevalence of the disease and accuracy of the testing. “Available evidence suggests that the prevalence of unknown disease in the beef industry is extremely small and the amount of resources required to survey each and every beef farm looking for the disease would be huge — effectively

it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. “It’s important to remember, not a single farm that has tested positive for M bovis to date has been infected by stock that has come from a beef farm, due to the lower risk profile that beef farms have for spreading M bovis. “We support the suggestion the TAG has also made for more targeted approaches to finding the disease such as focussing on places that receive animals from many sources — so-called ‘aggregators’. If infected animals are detected entering these, then tracing activities can go back to the source farm to remove the disease. “In addition to efficiency, it is important the approach adopted for beef surveillance is proportionate, given the performance of the tests we have available. Currently, the results obtained from a small number of farms have been extremely challenging to interpret. This has had significant consequences for the farmers involved, including imposition of lengthy periods of movement controls and destruction of stock. Our understanding of what test

results mean is continually improving as more are undertaken. Refining how these are applied and interpreted will allow us the ability to implement wider surveillance in the future and minimise the impact on farmers. “We are eager to detect M bovis and manage risks among all cattle producers, and support farmers who have been impacted directly and indirectly by the M bovis response.”

RURAL WHEELS

Power to the ground by Andy Bryenton

There comes a time when simply developing more horsepower is not enough. We’ve seen it in the power wars between big brands of roadgoing cars — at a certain critical juncture, there’s a limit to what can be transmitted from even the most advanced engine to the ground. That’s why the latest advancement in Can-Am’s Outlander range of quad bikes involves the delivery of applied force where you need it. Knowing that the contact patches, which anchor any vehicle to the ground are only the size of most people’s palm-print, Can-Am engineers have made significant suspension and ride refinements to the 2019 Outlander XT to complement its selection of three Rotax engine choices — either a 62hp 650cc, a 78hp 750cc or a thumping 91hp 1,000cc V-twin unit. It all begins at the front, with a wider stance meaning a more planted feel on the trail. Can-Am has improved the front A-arm suspension and sway bar to capitalise on this wider track.

At the rear, the independent suspension has also been reworked to eliminate scrub and camber changes, leading to a more ‘straight up and down’ wheel motion with plenty of travel. It all adds up to inspire confidence in the rough. Less unsprung weight, tyres with extreme grip and even more durable aluminium wheels have all been added to the recipe. Controlling the Outlander XT has also been made easier with the adoption of a three-mode power steering system, which adapts to your input for easier turning in tight spots. At slow speeds, the power steering assist

Can-Am have concentrated on getting power to the ground where it’s needed for their new Outlander XT

is ramped up, while it steps into the background when the revs get high, allowing for a natural feel of the terrain through the handlebars. Like all the best technologies, it’s unobtrusive when you don’t need it, though there is a further level of control — Can-Am has provided riders with three distinct settings to tailor the power steering response to the conditions.
