Gifting a diamond Auckland jewellers Mark and Pamela Beckett are giving away a two-carat diamond valued at $12,000 as a way of showing their love and support for dairy farmers and their appreciation for the work they do every day of the year, and in all weather. “It’s not just any old diamond. It is a rare green diamond, and quite possibly the only one in New Zealand,” says Mr Beckett. The diamond is the prize in a promotion organised by DairyNZ. In his decades as a jeweller, Mr Beckett has only once before had a green diamond. He came across this diamond in a collection of estate jewellery in Australia where it had been part of a family collection for several generations. “Our lives during the past 40plus years have revolved around precious gems, and we believe Kiwi dairy farmers are gems too. We reckon this rare green diamond is the perfect way to celebrate our dairy farmers who are committed to caring for our land and environment, and, we believe, just like diamonds, that they are here forever.” The Becketts both hail from dairy farming families. Mark was raised on a dairy farm in Matamata in the dairy heartland of the Waikato, while a child, Pamela often visited her grandparents’ dairy farm. The land that is now part of Auckland Airport. “Even back then, our farming families had a long-term view of environmental stewardship. Everything my father did on the farm was to care for the land and his animals,” says Mr Beckett. “It’s my opinion that dairy farmers are more environmentally green than most. Certainly greener than many non-farming people because of the work they do to protect the environment. “We see some dairy farmers getting bad press for allegedly stuffing up the streams and their cows get the blame for global warming. We saw the opportunity to give away this appropriately green coloured diamond to thank the good farmers for their hard work, both as

stewards of the land and also in bringing us milk. “It feels like the natural thing for us to do.” DairyNZ’s general manager farm performance, Vanessa Winning, says she is touched by the Becketts’ appreciation for dairy farmers. “This is such a thoughtful gift — a true surprise and delight for farmers. While we receive praise and recognition for the work our farmers and their teams are doing on-farm and in their surrounding communities — this is the first time anyone has expressed their admiration and thanks in this way.” Until March 10, anyone can nominate a dairy farmer they feel is worthy of receiving the diamond. Go to dairynz. co.nz/diamonds — the winner will be announced between March 16 and 18.

Encouraging proposal responses Dairy farmers are being encouraged to have their say on a new biodiversity proposal, which may affect them, and share their views on the best way to enhance and protect biodiversity on-farm. The Ministry for the Environment is consulting on a proposed National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity until March 14 2020, and DairyNZ is encouraging farmers to make a submission. “Dairy farmers have carried out a wide range of work in recent years to protect and improve biodiversity on their farms,” says DairyNZ’s environment manager Aslan Wright-Stow. “It includes planting, pest control, retiring or covenanting land, and fencing off native vegetation, which benefits water quality and ecosystems. Farmers recognise the important role indigenous plants and trees and native species play in our ecosystems. The consultation underway is an opportunity for farmers and the community to consider practical options to preserve and enhance biodiversity, and to highlight the work they have already done to protect biodiversity.” Dair y farmers with indigenous vegetation, native bird or insect habitats, or Aslan Wright-Stow, DairyNZ’s Environment manager wetlands on their farms could be affected by the proposals in the their views on the proposals and their practical experience of what works well consultation document. SWAPPED FOR CHAROLAIS BY DENISE GUNN Moving from Wellington to a remote hill country farm in 1990, with their four young children, was a bold move for Paul and June Crothers.

P

aul was working as a finance manager for a large corporate when he and June decided to buy a farm in Mangamahu. “When we purchased the farm, we were determined to get away from the wind that was everyday life in Wellington,” said Paul. Situated in a sheltered location in the Whangaehu River Valley, the couple added to the original block in 1995 through purchasing flat country off the neighbouring farm. Their farm now covers 550ha, with 350ha in steep hill country and 100ha of terrace flats, along the Whangaehu River.

A further 80ha is in established pine forest. The couple’s farming career began as a traditional sheep and beef operation, running close to 4,500 stock units. “As most hill country farms, we struggled to make satisfactory profits, so we diversified by establishing a flowergrowing business on the farm, we also planted some of our most challenging country in forestry as a retirement plan.” says Paul. During the years, their sheep and beef operation has undergone changes. “Early on, we experimented using different bulls over our Angus/Hereford

cows and found that using a Charolais bull provided the best results. Charolais produce crossbred calves that handle our conditions well and are far more profitable than traditional breeds. For the last 10 years or so, we have only used Charolais bulls over our traditional beef cows.” Due to the success with their Charolais-cross cattle, the Crothers ventured into breeding purebreds. In 2014 they bought a group of cows from the Cotswold Charolais Stud near Napier. Since then, they’ve frequented all the Charolais stud dispersal sales. “Our stud focus has been to breed bulls, which are suitable for use with all farming systems, but in particular will move easily into a steep hill country environment.” The Crothers named their stud, Hill Country Charolais, with this in mind. Paul said many studs claim to raise their bulls on hill country, but terrain varies significantly. “Our aim is to breed bulls that will survive on some of the steepest hill country farmed in New Zealand.” As Hill Country Charolais has been built on the stock from stud clearing sales, the Crothers have been selective. They buy polled stock with above average EBVs and good constitution. However, most of the cows purchased have not adapted well to their hill property and required culling. Yet their offspring, raised on hills, have performed well. This process of building a stud herd has taken more time than planned. Calving in mid-July suits the stud’s operation. “Calving is critical to getting calves big enough to compete with other studs. It has meant we need to save a significant

amount of grass to break-feed cows precalving, and have plenty of feed for the cows once they have calved.” Previously heifers were mated as twoyear-olds. Now, with most of the yearling heifers more than 400kg, they are put to the bull a year earlier. Last year calving achieved 109%. The Crothers utilise the farm’s flat land primarily for growing crops to finish lambs. Up to 15ha is also set aside to grow baleage to feed cows prior to calving. The farm’s hill country, with a poor fertiliser history, is being reverted to manuka, which suits their son’s beekeeping business. Monthly rainfall

is fairly consistent at around 100ml. Frosts, which used to be common and sometimes severe, have more recently been non-existent. Paul said all bulls had been sold by word-of-mouth with clients impressed with the stocks’ temperament and moving ability. Below-grade stock are sold to the works before their second winter. “We take great personal pride in the animals we produce, and they are a pleasure to work with. We find the

positive feedback we get from our clients is also rewarding. “Charolais are an attractive breed with good temperament, and they cer tainly measure up in the performance stakes.” Paul and June are members of the New Zealand Charolais Cattle Society and find the group supportive. Annual tours of cattle farms around different parts of the country have also been helpful in developing future plans for their stud.

BREEDERS PRODUCE

brilliant blooms BY DENISE GUNN

Derek and Theresa Halford’s property began as a blank canvas, but now boasts the largest number of tree peony varieties in New Zealand, along with a vast range of irises.

T

he couple moved to their 33-acre Rangiotu property in 1980, using the land to rear cattle and train racehorses. Gardens were added after the house was built. As a schoolboy, Derek worked in a rose nursery in Wanganui, and his horticultural passion never faded. The couple started growing roses on their new property but when the bottom fell out of the market, new plants were needed to replace them. The Halfords chose peonies, buying their first plants in the early 1990s. Irises followed when looking for a companion plant to flower with the peonies. Derek said the garden then just exploded.

Now more than 400 different varieties of tree peonies put on a stunning display during October and November. New varieties appear each year as seedlings reach the flowering stage. The Halfords find breeding new colours, and colour combinations with the two types of plants they grow, a rewarding process. “We also grow Aril iris species, which we were told by many people would not be successful growing in New Zealand. We have proved them wrong again.” The Aril iris originates Iran, Syria, Israel, Turkey and some of the former Russian states. In the past, the couple entered iris competitions with a large measure of success.

“We were very successful winning Queen of the Show, along with numerous class wins. We don’t compete now as the show is only for registered irises. Although I am one of the very few who have bred a number of irises, which are attracting very high comments from people who visit the garden, we haven’t bothered to join the iris society again. There is no competition in New Zealand for peonies that we know of.” Throughout February, Derek is busy grafting tree peonies with a narrow time frame to complete this complicated method. Pollination of seed is easier, but to get a seed to the flowering stage can take between 6 to 10 years. The success rate sits at around 50 per cent. Derek said it’s a long wait and if the flower isn’t of sufficient class to keep, it gets thrown on the compost heap. “Herbaceous plants can take up to a year longer than tree peonies. You cannot grow peonies from cuttings.” In 2017 Derek and Theresa travelled to China, visiting several peony gardens and the Luoyang Peony Festival. In 29 of the 30 provinces in China, the peony is the national flower. In the other two provinces, it is the lotus. “I was asked over there to make a speech to the invited guests at the festival, numbering about 2,000, on behalf of New Zealand. Among the guests were mayors of cities in China and members of the government who we were introduced to.” Producing the world’s first orange tree peony has been a major highlight in Derek and Theresa’s plant breeding programme.

“The Chinese garden offered a large number of their peonies for 10 grafts of this peony. To our dismay, we cannot bring them into the country so the deal cannot go forward. “MPI told us when we came back from China that they did not have a trade agreement with horticulture between the two countries.” Derek said if they were able to bring in plants from China, the peony colour range availability would increase. Although new peony colours are produced every year, this is usually in combinations. Until very recently there was no true blue, no black and no orange. “The orange is the only one that is now in existence,” said Derek. “There are black reds; Black Panther being the darkest, along with Black Pirate and Thunderbolt. The so-called blues are various forms of lavender purple and violet.” Various forms of flowers are also available with doubles the most popular, followed by semi-doubles and bombshaped doubles. Peonies and irises are sold to clients who visit their garden, along with cut flowers ordered for weddings and other celebrations. In addition to the tree peony, Derek and Theresa also grow the herbaceous, and Itoh or Intersectional peonies. The Itoh peony, introduced in 1964, is a cross between the tree and herbaceous peonies. Although a difficult cross to produce, the plant grows close to 50 flowers in about five years.

Honey makes a home

Rory and Hannah O’Brien began their rapidly expanding Hunt and Gather Bee Co as a result of changing from the dairy industry to do something different. by Ann van Engelen

“W

e started out dairy farming but couldn’t see much of a future in it, so Rory applied for a job working with bees, and enjoyed the change and we have never looked back,” says Hannah. “The original job was in Queenstown, and he loved it from the start, so we sold our house, bought some hives and started our own operation on a smaller scale. We moved from Cromwell to Coromandel where Rory had secured a new beekeeping job, and we had a baby on the way.” It wasn’t until they relocated to Raglan that they focussed more on their own brand, which has become very successful. “We now have more than 200 hives and sell our honey

at various Hamilton, Cambridge, and Raglan farmers’ markets, retail stores and we also make beeswax food wraps. This summer, we introduced a half-day beekeeping experience where people learn about the hives, put on a bee suit and work first-hand with bees.” Starting out wasn’t short of hurdles with Hannah discovering she is severely allergic to bee stings when she is pregnant. “I had a severe reaction to a sting and the nurses told me to ‘stay away from bees’, but we had just bought 24 hives. I was never going to do the fieldwork anyway but focus on the sales distribution and marketing. A bee never stings for no reason. It is, generally, because you have hurt it by standing on

it or touching it. This is our fifth summer. The first two seasons had unusual weather, and we had budgeted on the honey averages of other bee companies, but we got quite a bit less. It taught us to budget on the worst-case scenario and then we had two really good seasons. “We love that honey is a sustainable industry, and the bees are doing good things, you are not really taking anything from the land. “We cold process our honey so it still has a lot of nutritional value. We use glass jars as we are keen to stay away from plastic and only use wooden frames. This season we are selling honeycomb as well. We take a whole comb from the hive and cut it to size. It is a culinary experience older people remember it as children and constantly ask for. Our hives are on other people’s land. Half are in the Coromandel and half are around Raglan as a safeguard if a season is bad on one coast the other may be fine. This year Raglan was super windy and didn’t perform that well — but the Coromandel did great. It also provides other varieties of honey as well. “At times, volunteers help to harvest the honey. They are usually people interested in beekeeping that come and stay with us to gain experience. We had about 20 people visit in the past year. One man comes for his holidays from overseas as he enjoys being busy and learning.” The honey is taken to be extracted and packaged in Katikati and distributed by the O’Briens. “Our packing runs are a few thousand RD 20 02 Taranaki_Manawatu February 2020.qxp jars at a time. Having the hives in various locations gives the family a wider variety of honey flavours into the honey industry, look at the setup costs, triple them and don’t expect to make a lot of money for a couple of years. If you don’t really love it, then it will feel like you aren’t getting much reward. If you do really love it, stick at it.” Hunt and Gather Honey has won several awards including silver in the Outstanding Food Producers award, the Best Emerging Business at the Rural Woman NZ Business Awards and runner-up for the best honey in the New Zealand Farmers’ Market Awards. “The key to good honey is bees that are well cared for, happy and have everything they need. Make sure through the spring they have plenty of food available so when honey season 12/02/20 1:11 PM Page 1 starts they are strong, and the queens

can lay well. Manage against the varroa mite to avoid getting the disease in the hives and during summer, make sure they have plenty of room to store the honey. Keeping it small scale is helpful as you can get around them easier. “Bees are a cool type of livestock to work with. They generally stick to themselves and are easy going most of the time. “The tourism idea helps us diversify the business. We enjoyed dairy farming but moving to beekeeping was a good choice as it is still agriculture, seasonal and working together. It is just a different type of animal and industry. “The returns are not as good as dairy farming but it has been a good family lifestyle change.”

What’s up with turmeric? by John Arts

I speak daily to people affected by inflammation — this commonly affects joints but can affect most types of body tissue. While we can feel the discomfort of joint inflammation, we cannot feel inflammation of blood vessels till disease symptoms appear. Our immune system responds to injury and sickness by generating inflammation. It is an essential part of our in-built repair and recovery systems. While we cannot heal without inflammation, unwanted inflammation can not only slow healing but create new problems. The long list of problems with the suffix ‘itis’ are all inflammatory diseases. One of the reasons we are told to eat lots of deep coloured plants is that the anti-inflammatory antioxidants are locked into their bright colours. It is the yellow in turmeric that contains curcumin. It is the purple colour on grape seeds that contain the potent OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins). While osteoarthritis is the most common joint problem, others such as tendonitis, bursitis and rheumatoid arthritis affect many people. The centre of any nutritional medicine programme is an anti-inflammatory diet. Adding well-formulated supplements with highgrade ingredients can add healing compounds at levels much higher than

through diet alone. Two of the most potent are curcumin from turmeric and the OPCs from grape seeds. For example, adding 1,000mg of 95% Curcumin is equivalent to several tablespoons of turmeric. You would also need to eat tablespoons of red wine grape seeds to get 100mg of pure OPC. I speak to clients on a daily basis that are more mobile and more comfortable by adding potent natural anti-inflammatory compounds. One with rheumatoid arthritis is much more comfortable by adding 1,000mg of curcumin and 200mg of OPC daily. I have written a comprehensive Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. Stop rust and protect machinery Come and see us at the field days to see our new Prolan Extreme product. Prolan a New Zealand-made lanolin-based lubricant and corrosion inhibitor is becoming increasingly popular with farmers, engineers, panelbeaters, motorhomers and boaties for its unique ability to adhere to metal and stop rust in its tracks.

Prolan Enduro Medium Grade being sprayed on to an ATV to stop rust

A coating of Prolan Lanolin Enduro Heavy Grade on a vehicle chassis will provide a long-term protective coating, which will help pass WOF and COF checkouts. Many vehicle stations are now recommending a coating of Prolan to cover existing rust and seal it off from air and moisture. This environmentally friendly lanolin coating can be used on farm, marine vehicles, truck, fertiliser spreaders and motorhome chassis to prevent rust. Prolan cannot be removed by cold water blasting; this allows vehicle chassis to be cleaned without removing the rust protection. Prolan Enduro Medium Grade is excellent as a general workshop lubricant and corrosion inhibitor for coating quad bikes and farm machinery. Many farmers find Prolan so versatile as a general workshop lubricant using it to sort seized locks, bolts, chains and squeaky door hinges. Also as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor to spray over existing rust on machinery or to coat a quad bike

or farm mule to prevent the chassis from rusting out. A coating of Prolan for short and long-term protection of machinery stored indoors and outdoors protects assets and increases their resale value. Prolan is easily sprayed using a trigger pack, garden sprayer or airless spray gun. It is recommended to first remove any dirt, flaky rust and allow machinery to dry before application. Once coated, the longer the period between application and vehicle use — the better the surface will stay. On any cosmetic surfaces, Prolan is buffed in with a rag. The product coverage is 8–10 square metres depending on the surface profile. A one-litre can of Prolan will easily protect a quad bike chassis and a four-litre tin a five-metre truck chassis. Prolan a great environmentally friendly product will save time on maintenance and component replacement and longterm will increase machinery life and resale value. It is hard to believe it is off the sheep’s back — taken from nature to protect nature!

Getting pastures growing again Dry conditions in many parts of the North Island mean some pastures are in less than ideal condition as autumn approaches. If you have paddocks, which have taken a hiding during summer, now is the time to assess the damage, and work out what’s needed to restore DM productivity before winter. The sooner you act on this, the better. If thin, weak pastures are not already full of weeds, it won’t be very long until they are, which means they won’t grow or feed cows well for the year(s) ahead. “Pasture’s our key feed, so that’s why it’s important to get out now and check all of your pastures, to see how they have fared through summer,” says Barenbrug Agriseeds pasture systems agronomist Jen Corkran. If the damage is severe, eg, ryegrass plants cover less than 50% of the ground, full renewal is the best way to restore these paddocks, either this autumn or if necessary via short term crops to grass next autumn. For larger areas of damage, with too many paddocks for summer cropping in 2020/21, undersowing can really benefit. That entails hard grazing, then drilling ryegrass seed in pastures, without spraying, and works best where paddocks have thinned out, but are not yet full of weeds. It’s quick and has little effect on cover, so it can be a fast and cost-effective way of boosting growth in these paddocks. “Be aware; however, your results will be compromised if weeds have already

gained a good foothold,” Jen advises. Shogun hybrid ryegrass, in particular, has proved ideal for undersowing. New Zealand’s best-selling hybrid establishes as fast as Italian ryegrass, so you get paddocks back to full production, or better – before winter, but Shogun with its NEA endophyte lasts longer than any Italian. “The only way Shogun can achieve this performance, however, is if it has room to grow! For it to fulfil its potential, it must be sown before existing weed seeds in the

soil germinate and get a head start.” Sowing in the dry can work really well, as the seed is in the ground ready to respond to the rain. Jen says it’s important to always use coated seed, and monitor for slugs. Common mistakes with undersowing include drilling too deep (10mm), drilling too fast (8km/h), sowing bare speed and sowing at too light a rate. The DairyNZ Pasture Scoring Tool is a useful visual guide for scoring paddocks on a one–five basis. See dairynz.co.nz for more.

Central Districts

FIELD DAYS

19 – 21 MARCH 2020 MANFIELD PARK, FEILDING

It’s showtime in Manawatu by Paul Campbell

Central District Field Days is on again this year from March 19 to 21 at Manfield, Feilding, showcasing more than 600 exhibitors — the most in its history, with more than 27,000 visitors expected during the three-day event. “This national event attracts exhibitors and attendees from across the country to the rural heartland of the North Island,” says field days’ sales manager Cheryl Riddell. “From farmers and foodies to techheads and townies, we have something for everyone. The event showcases cutting-edge machinery and equipment, the latest developments in rural innovation, lifestyle stalls, top-notch regional food and local brews. Score yourself a heap of special deals exclusive to the event and have the chance to yarn with sellers and exhibitors. It’s a great time to stock up — plus there are fun and freebies for the whole family.”

The event’s origins stretch back to 1993, and it has been located at Manfeild, which changes from a paddock to a mini town in a matter of days. Cheryl explains how it started with 230 sites occupied by exhibitors and has now grown to more than 600. “The appetite from businesses to be a part of the event has only increased as word spread about the success others were having. “This opportunity hasn’t gone unnoticed, with other events springing up to make the most of the groundswell in the region,” she said. The field days now rounds out NZ AgriFood Investment Week, which

started in 2016 and follows the rural games that began in 2015. There will be the usual crowd favourites such as the National Excavator Operator Competition and the NZFC Central Districts Double Power fencing competition. “For an event that requires an annual set up of everything from basic infrastructures like water and power, to erecting hundreds of sites during a matter of days, it must be worth it. From someone who has been around for 23 CD Field Days events,” Cheryl says, “it is!”

On the showtime agenda, this year will be live music entertainment and pony rides for the kiddies! Make sure to check out the Food Court and Bar located next to HQ and the Cuisine marquee. There is a huge selection of prizes available on-site, including a farm bike and a trailer packed with goodies from various sponsors and exhibitors. More than half the 600-plus exhibitor spaces were already booked after last year’s event. Many come year after year, testimony to the valuable relationships they build with last year alone, exhibitors generating $41 million in sales revenue.

The games kick off in Palmerston North on Friday, March 13 with the Allflex Clash of the Colleges. This inaugural competition will see budding young farmers from around the lower North Island showcase their skills in 22 agri-challenges. Massey University Young Farmers Club vice-chair and event co-organiser Emma Ractliffe said the competition would see more than 140 teens from high schools around the lower North Island compete. “Teams of four will compete at 22 modules. Everything from milking a cow and plant washdown, to wool classing and body condition scoring, as well as paper-based modules that cover seeds, weeds and fertilisers.” Allflex Asia-Pacific and China chief executive Shane McManaway is delighted to be sponsoring the Allflex Clash of the Colleges. “The agri-sector is full of promise for young people — it is a rewarding career option. The Allflex Clash of the Colleges is all about bringing together young people from across the region to celebrate the sector.” Feilding High School agricultural science teacher Kain Nixon said the competition is about having fun and giving it a go.

“Many of our kids with farming backgrounds know that it can be a really isolating industry, and this shows them how important it is to build a community around them.” The competition will be held in The Square, Palmerston North between 2–4pm. The Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards will also be held on March 13 with an awards dinner in the evening. Finalists from five sections, covering both traditional and newer rural sports, will vie for the titles. “The range of rural sports and the quality of nominees represented this year is fantastic,” said New Zealand

Rural Sports Awards judging panel convenor Nathan Twaddle. “It has certainly made the job of the judging panel very difficult, something we take as a healthy sign of the quality of rural sport at the moment. The Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards are all about honouring people from young athletes who are just starting, to the lifetime achievers, and those who work away in the background to make sure rural sports survive.” A weekend of traditional sports attracting top competitors from throughout Australasia will follow. National and world champions will compete for a range of New Zealand Rural Games titles.

OPINION

We were once proud farmers

FOR ALL YOUR JOINERY NEEDS

by Mark Cameron

The rural sector in New Zealand is in crisis. Our way of life on the land is now being emotionally and fiscally evaporated and expunged, eroding away in the face of a pontificating political machine that is bloated on grandstanding. In the rural sector, I see palpable despair at a frequency that I believe this country has never seen before. It has become abundantly clear that there is a real feeling of loss, frustration, fear, sadness and looming capitulation. Farmers that routinely had high esteem now, all too often, walk around with their heads below their belt buckles, disillusioned, their pride once held true and dear slipping away — all too often to emotional oblivion. Front and centre in all of this is the dire nature of the government and bureaucratic machinations of industry leaders and their overreaching interference into rural lives. The levels that we see out of this current government and its proposals feel emotionally cataclysmic. There are ideological pipe dreams to mitigate global warming with no practical or pragmatic solutions to offer, other than to add monumental compliance costs and create a palpable fear of ‘what’s coming next’.

Farming is being left at impossible fiscal and emotional levels. The bureaucratic machine keeps turning, and farmers’ lives are irreversibly changed to a point they leave the land or at worst case, take their own lives. Moreover, what of the banks? They increasingly have turned their backs and retrenched their faith in an industry they once lauded as front and centre to the nation’s economic health. That once inspirational attitude is now a metaphorical malignancy. Where are our industry leaders in all of this? They seem to have deserted their posts and their very shareholders in lieu of cosying up to politicians to get their next caffeine fix at yet another expensive meeting. The more I shy away from this truth, the more I’m brought back to earth by the court of public opinion — rural families. We must have a front and centre dialogue with those on high about the truth of where rural New Zealand sits in the overall New Zealand scheme of things, to find a way forward in this mire

Kitchens, laundries, wardrobes, stairs, cabinet alterations & repairs.

of confusion and despair. To look and seek out what once was and hold it again dear to our hearts. Rediscover our appetite to succeed; our drive and ambition, our self-belief, and a resurgence of rural pride. The time for that is right now! Mark Cameron is an industry activist leader who farms in Kaipara District.

AG CONTRACTORS Government moves on contractor conditions by Paul Campbell

The employment status of some 140,000 self-employed contractors across New Zealand is now in the government melting pot with submissions closed on February 14 in a public consultation over their job conditions. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is concerned that some contractors are vulnerable to poor outcomes because they lack both the protections offered to employees by law and the power to negotiate a better deal. However, some contractors oppose regulation and have expressed their views accordingly, saying change could increase the cost of business in the country. Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway says some contractors, and particularly dependent contractors, are vulnerable in the workplace. “For example, employees who are labelled as ‘independent contractors’ by their employers miss out on their basic employment rights. Workers who are caught in the grey zone between

B.J. Bishop Transport

employee and contractor status are also vulnerable. I have heard stories of contractors who work long hours, in some cases 80 hours a week, or others who receive an income, which works out to be less than the minimum wage once you account for their hours. Some workers are finding themselves dependent on one employer for all their income, with no flexibility or power to negotiate better conditions. “In some cases, workers are completely unaware that they have been engaged as contractors and not employees. These workers are surprised with tax and ACC bills at the end of the financial year, which they cannot afford. This government is committed to taking action to ensure that businesses treat contractors fairly.“ The ministry says it’s consulting the public on options for change to: • Ensure that workers receive their minimum rights and entitlements

AG CONTRACTORS

However, the online discussion of the government proposal raises concerns that the proposed new contracting rules will force tens of thousands of compliant contractors to become ‘employees’ of the entities that they contract to. “It will affect many industries, rural contractors, skilled trades, professional services, freelancers, consultants, service businesses, real estate agents, taxi drivers, healthcare and many other contractors,” says one contracting enterprise. “These rules could potentially undo the healthy business

relationships contractors have with their customers and the organisations they contract to. The changes under discussion could add a significant cost to New Zealand businesses.” Minister Lees-Galloway says New Zealand currently has one of the highest employment rates in the OECD and near record-low unemployment. “Our GDP growth is better than the OECD countries we like to compare ourselves with. “We know our economy has solid foundations.

“However, there are problems that have built-up for a number of decades and led to higher levels of inequality and poverty. “Changes made to our labour market in the 1990s in the name of market flexibility have resulted in structural problems and left too many hard-working New Zealanders struggling to make ends meet. “Some of those changes may have been useful for GDP growth, but they also increased inequality by removing the checks and balances that were

needed to ensure all workers had the tools to support their wellbeing in the labour market.“ In a concurrent development, a law change is on the way for contractors working in New Zealand’s screen sector with these changes actually proposed by industry and largely supported by the government. They will see contractors allowed to bargain collectively. Government has largely agreed to their recommendations and is now drafting legislation to implement them.

Bovine TB detected

DAIRY

Beef + Lamb NZ is informing farmers bovine tuberculosis has been discovered in cattle based in Hawke’s Bay. “A cluster of bovine TB infections in cattle near the Napier-Taupo road has been found, and these have been taken under close management by OSPRI,” says Beef + Lamb NZ CEO Sam McIvor. As of February 11, 28 cattle from eight herds are under management. A further 15 herds are currently under investigation. Some of these are expected to have infected animals. “The discovery of the disease is disappointing, as farmers have been working hard to help eradicate bovine TB, and this incursion is a frustrating setback to those efforts. It also comes at a time when the sector is dealing with the impact of Mycoplasma bovis, weaner sales are underway, and some farmers are looking to destock, partly as a result of dry conditions. “The discovery was made following routine surveillance as part of the TBfree eradication programme. Possums are the main vector of bovine TB, and this cluster of infection is likely to have originated from infected possums in nearby bush on private land. “As a precautionary action, OSPRI will expand the existing Movement Control Area in the region from March 1. It is essential to prevent the movement of the disease to uninfected regions

during the coming months. Within these controlled areas, farmers must comply with restrictions on the movement of their stock. All cattle and deer more than 90 days of age must test clear of bovine TB within 60 days prior to being moved. “Expanding the current movement control area will impact around 570 herds in Hawke’s Bay. “It means cattle heading for stock sales need to have returned a clear TB test within 60 days of moving out of the movement control area. Stock heading to processing plants are exempt from this. “Herd testing has also been brought forward for all dairy, beef and deer herds in the newly extended MCA. Infected animals will be slaughtered to remove the disease from their herd.” A Field HQ has been established in Napier to lead a response and will control stock movements in the vicinity to prevent any spread of disease with extension staff on the ground to communicate with farmers and communities. “Small clusters of disease outbreak like this are not uncommon and are expected from time to time in an eradication programme such as this. It’s important to remember there is

minimal risk to human health, though food safety authorities advise against the consumption of unpasteurised (raw) milk. “We encourage farmers to look out for each other and their families. The

Rural Support Trust is available to provide support to anyone who would like it.” For more information, visit ospri. co.nz/hawkes-bay or beeflambnz.com/ compliance/biosecurity.

Reforging the katana The use of the name ‘katana’ for Suzuki’s 1980 range of new, sporty motorcycles was a bold one. The Japanese manufacturer would have been fully aware of the implications. The katana was the legendarily sharp form of sword used by the ancient samurai, a symbol of Japanese engineering excellence. Anything less than a masterpiece would have been a public relations disaster. Thankfully, the team at Suzuki had two things on their side when it came to living up to the name. The first was a clever, compact new design aesthetic developed by Target Design in Germany. The second was a hot 16 valve engine that made the GSX 1100 Katana the fastest mass-production bike on the

street when it launched. Victory, and positive sales, came because they sweated the little details, such as offsetting the fuel filler cap to allow a tidy centre weld on the fuel tank. Little snips to cut out weight, lower the rider’s seating position and increase agility paid off. It meant that the compact

Katana four-pot beat Honda’s wide CBZ six-cylinder. Classic Katanas are hard to come by now, but there’s good news from Suzuki. A new, fully reimagined Katana is available for those who want to experience the next generation. They’ve started with a street-tuned version of the GSXR-1000 engine from the mid-2000s, then added that menacing semi-fared ‘shark’ look of the original bike. Moreover, they’ve gone further, as well. You can tell the engineers are serious when they claim they have shaved three

per cent of the weight of the pistons and rings. They’ve also precision-tuned the cam profiles and tuned the exhaust system like a symphony instrument for better, low-down kick. It’s all to do with pressure waves in the tubes, but all we know is that it sounds perfect. Suzuki’s homage to the Katana could have been a cheeky bit of retronostalgia taped on over a common-orgarden street bike for born again riders. Instead, it’s a fully formed masterwork in its own right, just as a katana should be — simple, sharp and light, with a classic profile that is instantly recognisable.

One two punch for Fendt by Andy Bryenton

Tractor of the Year is a hefty title, and in its 23rd year of being awarded, the title has been split into three denominations. Judges at the vast European Agritechnica festival, along with the reviewers from Italy’s Trattoti magazine, say that this is to reflect the vast range of tasks, which modern tractors undertake, from specialist harvesting through to pulling the heaviest of implements. This year, two of the three top prizes went to one company. Fendt has been making tractors for decades, and are no strangers to the awards podium. A double one-two has given the Germans real cause to celebrate, and now the pair of winners are poised to roll into New Zealand for our own round of field days and A&P shows. Winner of the overall Tractor of the Year title was the Fendt 942 Series, delivering more than 400 horsepower despite also exhibiting stunningly low emissions and fuel consumption. The big Fendt is engineered to achieve maximum torque at lower rpm with its nine-litre turbo diesel, and, in another 21st-century advancement, it’s also been designed to operate remotely, with many of its functions able to be slaved to exterior digital devices. As the big Fendt takes the number one spot on the podium, its ‘baby brother’ the 314 Vario swept up honours in the Utility Tractor class. These smaller machines are valued for their ability to multi-role about the

farm, so a massive range of PTO options is key. The mid-weight 314 Vario comes equipped with a dynamic performance system that boosts output power, even when the tractor is stationary. It’s also packed with customisable control options, making it easier than ever to adapt as a ‘Swiss army knife’ of a machine. While the 25 judges, gleaned from a panel of international agricultural

reviewers and writers, picked a New Holland for spot number three, it’s still a mighty win for Fendt, who have invested a substantial amount into research and development in recent years. The overarching award for all of Europe has been mirrored by national accolades in countries like Poland and Croatia.
