Young farmers across the Taranaki/ Manawatu region are gearing up to battle it out in the ANZ Young Farmer of the Year regional final on March 1. Four district finals were held recently in Taranaki, Manawatu and Horowhenua to find the top contestants to compete at the regional final. “A healthy number of competitors took part in each District Final and a great time was had by all,” said spokesperson Sam Tennent. Bank of New Zealand Agribusiness graduate Cameron Shaw (Massey Club) and beef and cropping farm manager Nigel Will (Marton Club) took first and second placings at the Taranaki Open District final in Inglewood, securing spots in the regional contest. Central Taranaki representatives, Taratahi Campus programme manager Roger Dettling and sharemilker Karl Dean, dominated the second Taranaki District Final in Inglewood to earn regional positions. Sharemilker and 2011 Grand Finalist Cam Brown (Fitzherbert Club) and Luke Renton (Opiki Club) both qualified from the Manawatu District Final. And Ballance Agri-nutrients technical sales representative Calvin Ball

(Massey Club) and sheep and beef farm manager Pete Fitz-Herbert (Marton Club) also secured positions at the Manawatu Open Distict Final. The Taranaki/Manawatu regional final daytime event will be held on the Railway Land in Palmerston North on March 1. Entry is free. The evening show begins with pre-dinner drinks in the Silks Lounge at the Awapuni Racecourse. Tickets are available at the ANZ Bank branch on the corner of Walding and Rangitikei Streets, Palmerston North or by contacting Chris Fullerton-Smith on 063 529 381. “The more Ms Tennent.

Porina impacting lower North Island pastures by Denise Gunn

Porina caterpillars are making their presence felt in the lower North Island, particularly in the Rangitikei and Manawatu regions.

reaching up to 30cm in depth. Porina caterpillars can vary in size, growing up to 50mm.

Mr Ferguson said usually farmers only become aware of porina when damage starts to appear.

Mr Ferguson said the caterpillars emerge from these burrows at night to feed.

“However sampling pastures at risk in February/March can identify pastures that could potentially be damaged before damage shows.

“They cut grass and clover leaves at the base of the plant and drag these into their burrows where they will feed on them for the next few days.” During spring and summer the moths fly in larger numbers, laying up to 3000 eggs each. Pasture damage caused by the caterpillars is most noticeable from April until September.

“Monitoring moth flights can be a very useful indicator of porina presence in a district and a critical indicator of when control measures should be applied.” Mr Ferguson recommends using Pest Alert on www.pestweb.co.nz as a tool to help farmers manage porina.

Makowhai Station Porina caterpillars cut grass and clover leaves at the base of the plant, dragging them into their burrows to feed on

Agresearch Invermay scientist Colin Ferguson said this is most likely as a result of particularly dry conditions three summers ago. These insects, native to New Zealand, are generally present in most areas but usually at unnoticeable levels. Mr Ferguson said low levels of porina are maintained through association with naturally occurring diseases which exert natural population regulation. “When this disease association is disrupted, outbreaks of porina occur two to four years after the disruption. “These disruptions are when, for some reason, the porina populations drop to very low levels, usually as a result of cultivation or drought. He said porina numbers build up again over the next two to three years and do so more quickly than the disease organisms. “We then see outbreaks of porina two to four years after these events.” The populations reduce again when the diseases have also built up to high levels and natural porina population regulation is re-established. “With cultivation, damage is on a paddock scale and occurs in paddocks

two to four years after cultivation,” said Mr Ferguson. “But following drought it is on district or region scale and pastures of all ages can be affected.” Porina caterpillars live in permanent burrows in the soil which get deeper as the caterpillars get larger, eventually

Scholarship provides beef industry insight

by Denise Gunn

Stock manager Pete Fitz-Herbert recently returned from a Beef and Lamb scholarship to Canada with a new-found appreciation for New Zealand’s farming systems, and a realisation of how this country fits into the world’s food production and trade.

Pete grew up on the family’s 700 acre farm near Hunterville. The farm’s original 400 acres was a ballot property granted to Pete’s grandfather as a returned serviceman. The family now farm 220 breeding cattle, 2400 Romney ewes and 800 hoggets on four properties — two hill country farms northeast of Hunterville and two near Feilding.

Pete said all stock are finished on-farm and supplied to Landmeats and Affco. “We finish all cattle in 18 to 22 months.” Pete’s Beef and Lamb scholarship took in the Five Nations Beef Alliance and Young Ranchers’ programme. “I was made aware of the scholarship

the scholarship until he had to leave for Canada. “I managed to conveniently fit between the end of our main lambing and hogget lambing so I up and left the old man in charge.” The trip to Canada wasn’t Pete’s first venture overseas. In 2006 he spent

“Its members contribute 50 percent of the beef exported internationally.” The Young Ranchers presented their views on sustainability and the benefits of the investment in future leaders and the Young Ranchers programme during the conference. “The entire experience was eye-opening — a very different take in off-farm involvement,” said Pete. “I had the chance to meet and learn from some remarkable people.” Pete found the New Zealand pastoral farming system clearly different to the beef production systems that operate in North America. “There are producers that are cow-calf breeding operators and then feedlot operators that finish cattle mainly on corn,” he said. “It’s very much a two-step system.” Pete, who is the currently chairman of the Marton Young Farmers Club, said his long term plans are to grow the family farm, turning it into a farming business with a family base.

As part of the Young Ranchers’ programme, the group visited a feedlot and vineyard in the Okanagan Valley, and toured Canada’s largest station — the 500,000 acre Douglas Lake Ranch

a season working on Meda Station in the Kimberley area of Western Australia, and worked during the spring months on a dairy farm in Chile four years later. Pete has also worked on Wairaki and Minaret Stations in the South Island.

“It became remarkably clear that although thousands of miles apart in some vague version of the same industry, we had common goals and challenges”

In preparation for the Young Ranchers’ programme, Pete learnt more about New Zealand’s own beef industry, spending time with Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s Farmer Director Ben O’Brien and General Manager Market Access James Parsons. He said this was remarkably valuable in learning about the issues that the beef industry faces. The Young Ranchers’ programme, held in conjunction with the Five Nations Beef Alliances (FNBA) annual conference in Canada, hosted representatives from Mexico, Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

As part of the programme, the group visited a feedlot and vineyard in the Okanagan Valley, and toured Canada’s largest station — the 500,000 acre Douglas Lake Ranch.

“The exposure to this experience, created for me a real awareness of the issues affecting the beef industry, the similarity and differences of our international markets and competitors.”

Pete said the FNBA conference in Banff covered a range of topics from traceability to trade barriers.

The programme started in Vancouver with each of the participating countries presenting a power point on their beef industry, its advantages and challenges.

“It became remarkably clear that although thousands of miles apart in some vague version of the same industry, we had common goals and challenges

from issues with trade barriers, limited resources, to the need for sustainable land use.”

He said the Beef and Lamb scholarship was a great experience, providing a real view into the backroom of the industry and a look at the complexities of trade issue.

Brewing—beer more than just a job on for Ron Trigg and his family.

a passi Brewing great beer isn’t just a job, it’s by Denise Gunn

Originally from Zimbabwe, the Trigg family moved to Taranaki 16 years ago, settling on a lifestyle block at Oakura. A short time later they bought some land at Pukearuhe and planted avocados. But when White Cliffs Brewing Company near

Urenui appeared on the market in 2007, the family — Ron, his former wife Jill, and his parents Mike and Rene, decided to ‘get into it’ and bought the brewery. “I thought that every bloke had an ambition to own a brewery,” said Ron.

ATTENTION: FARMERS

Easily Control and Enhance Effluent Management Stricter New Zealand legislation surrounding the management and control of dairy effluent in the NZ dairy industry has resulted in increased volumes of nutrient rich effluent being collected from dairy sheds, feed pads and holding areas for application onto land and pastures. The application of dairy effluent is now common and offers both environmental and economic benefits. In many cases these benefits are not truly being UNLOCKED. Effluent management is a real science and when managed correctly it can save thousands in inorganic fertilisers. One of the real secrets’ of UNLOCKING the maximum nutrient potential of Effluent is MINERALISATION.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT?

Poorly conditioned effluent may be more hazardous to the environment, and when irrigated to pastures may not produce the maximum nutrient potential for uptake by grasses.

BENEFITS AND SAVINGS:

The major economic benefit of good effluent management is the ability to utilise effluent to reduce inorganic fertilisers. While the nutrient value in effluent may vary for a number of reasons, when MINERALISATION occurs: - The potential fertiliser value increases. - The uptake by grasses and crops also increases.

- The environmental risks are reduced.

How to increase MINERALISATION of Dairy Effluent?

Treat the dairy effluent by introducing Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS into the effluent holding system. When dairy effluent is treated with Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS the benefits will continue throughout the whole ponding system through to its application onto land establishing and enhancing the necessary biological activity within the soils.

What is Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS

Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS is an easy to use all-natural heavy duty powdered formulation developed for the treatment of animal effluent. Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS contains billions of tiny beneficial micro-organisms which are harmless to humans, animals and the environment. These micro-organisms bio degrade the animal effluent and continue to rapidly develop throughout the whole process. - Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS is available in a handy 4x Shots Pack: Each individual shot is designed as a treatment for up to a 250 cow farm. (More shots can be used as required)

- Simple to use: Just pour into and mix the entire Shot in a bucket of warm water and apply this mixture directly into the ponding system. Have you had your shot today? Treat with Dairy-Kleen™ SHOTS

Buildings have been enlarged; the brewing capacity has been increased, quality improved, new retail areas have been completed, a cafe opened, and the outdoor area landscaped. In addition the brand and packaging have been given an overhaul, an annual Oktoberfest organised and 18 new beers introduced. “We have grown the business from a very small base, by 25 to 30 percent annually, and are on track to profitability this year,” said Ron. Over 100,000 litres of beer will be produced at mike’s Organic Brewery this year with a core range of eight certified organic and 10 newly released non-organic beers. The brewery’s beer has also been acknowledged at the Australian International Beer Awards, picking up a silver medal. Ron said beer competitions concentrate on judging the beers against particular style guidelines. “We have a few beers that conform with these styles, but I typically like to brew beers that are quite bold, full of flavour, but not normally conforming to a specific style. “For me the greatest reward is seeing people enjoy the beers, and ultimately having to keep up with demand when they keep buying them.” The Trigg family are certainly starting to see their efforts recognised with more retailers now stocking the beer produced by mike’s Organic Brewery. “Getting the retailers to stock the beers in the early days was very challenging,” said Ron. “Now it’s a whole lot easier. “Since more people know the products and are asking for them, retailers are now making the first point of contact to stock the beers.” Six years ago mike’s Organic Brewery introduced mike’s

Common Muscle Problems The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop. PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis. This is caused by inflammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness. The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or find that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins. Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of inflammatory chemicals. We add a wide range of antioxidant and antiinflammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower inflammation. Serious fatigue is a feature of

PMR and increases in energy is often the first benefit people feel from nutritional therapy. FM is a lot more complex. These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline taken in single evening doses to treat both pain and insomnia. FM is more difficult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple inflammatory problem. It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle fibre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real benefits from intensive multiantioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM before bed to help with muscle oxygenation. Curiously, as with PMR people with FM often notice an improvement in energy before any reduction in pain. Give me a call if you need help.

Jamie has built up a team of dogs and competed in Hunterville’s Shepherds’ Shemozzle several times with her main Huntaway, Phlex

“I spent all school holidays working here and during uni, split my time working casual at home and across the road on Papanui Station,” said Jamie. After completing her third year examinations, studying towards a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in agriculture at Massey University, Jamie spent the summer shepherding at Papanui Station. She gathered together a small team of dogs then started working at Makaraka, a property owned by the late Jim Bull. One year later, Jamie had to leave her employment to undergo knee reconstruction and took six months to recuperate. She returned home and divided her time working on a casual basis at both Wharenui and Papanui Stations. During the 2010 winter, Jamie worked on a cattle station in Queensland before discovering in her final two weeks of work that she had broken her ankle and torn her groin tendon a few months earlier. “So I left after four months as I wanted to get my ankle back to normal.” “When I got back, ever the sucker for punishment, I did two shearing courses and went shearing for the summer in Hunterville.”

“I loved shearing but struggled to ride as I was usually too tired to work a horse after a day’s shearing, so shepherding fits better with my lifestyle.” “I love the fact that each day is different from the last,” said Jamie. “Seldom do you find yourself doing the same thing day in, day out.” Jamie’s passion for animals and the outdoors includes showjumping up to three horses during the summer months and hunting during the winter. “I hunt with the Rangitikei Hunt Club and do as much whipping as I can up the front with the huntsman.” Jamie’s main horse, Kobi, is a home-bred part Clydesdale, currently competing at 1.30m. She is also training two young Clydesdale/stationbred horses. Social netball and running feature in Jamie’s spare time too. Jamie won the women’s section again at last year’s Shepherds’ Shemozzle and placed 10th overall with her dog Phlex. “I got Phlex as a pup at the start of 2006 and she has done each shemozzle with me since,” said Jamie. “She is my main Huntaway and my first dog so is an awesome work dog but also a bit of a family pet.” Jamie enjoys being able to compete openly with the men during the Shepherds’ Shemozzle. “Good to show them that girls are just as tough,” she said. “Also it is a huge social day and night to meet up with friends from all over the country.”

TREE LINES | HEDGES SHELTER BELTS

Preparations are in full swing and the countdown is on for this year’s annual Central Districts Field Days. Recognised as one of the largest regional agricultural field days in New Zealand, the event’s central location at Manfeild Park makes it an ideal location to cater for the lower North Island. Central Districts Field Days Event Manager Cheryl Riddell said visitors can travel, visit and return within a day, update themselves on what's new for 2013 or catch-up with exhibitors and friends. The dates of New Zealand’s three regional field days — Northland, Central Districts and the South Island Agricultural Field Days — have now been co-ordinated to enable exhibitors to attend all three. This year’s Central Districts Field Days has been brought forward to run from March 7-9. “We have moved one week earlier as a one off this year to work in with South Island Field Days so our exhibitors have time to move between the two islands.” Ms Riddell said the field days are on track with over 500 exhibitors from all over New Zealand and a couple of new ones from Australia lined up. Regular features set to return to the field days, including Stihl TimberAces, the Central Districts Double Power Fencing competition, the tractorpull event, National Excavator competition, and the vintage tractor and machinery display, are certain to provide plenty of entertainment. These features will continue daily throughout the event. The Best of Beef competition will also run alongside the field days with several cattle breeds on show. Massey University continues its

association with the Central Districts Field Days as a principal sponsor of the event. “We have moved the Rural Lifestyle Pavilion down to join up with their marquee,” said Ms Riddell. She said the introduction of the Taste of Central Districts marquee went well in its first year and will return with a few more sites. “I'll have a basket of products from this marquee to give away again to someone in the public. “A Taranaki dairy farmer won it last year to the delight of his family,” she said. On the final afternoon of the event, one lucky entrant in the Central Districts Field Days competition will take home a Suzuki ATV and Brent Smith trailer filled with farm and home-related products. The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 years and from a rural address. Gates open at 8.30am each day, closing at 4.30pm on March 7-8. Gates close at 4pm on the final day of the event. Admission fee is $12 for adults, and $9 for seniors (65 years and over on

Modern Preserving

Farmers markets are springing up across the country, and with them has come a revival in bottling of fruits and vegetables. Arthur Holmes Ltd is a family firm which this year celebrates 102 years in business, wholesalers of New Zealand’s largest range of glass and plastic jars and bottles for food, oil, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, scientific, herbal and homeopathic businesses, and all types of cottage industries. “We specialise in supplying small quantities of quality jars and bottles and their respective closures, says managing director, Rick Holmes. “Additional closures can be ordered

individually, and there’s no minimum purchase requirement. “Preserving jars and bottles are our mainstay and these have had a marked increase in sales in recent years. Many of our customers now sell in the frequent weekend farmers’ markets. “Today preserving is so much easier. Gone are the days of seals and bands. The modern cap now has a built-in rubber compound which when hot filled creates a vacuum once it has cooled, the twist finish allows the cap to be opened by braking the vacuum.” Arthur Holmes Ltd supplies over 20,000 customers.

These all have fast tipping bodies, via the multi staged rams that give 60 degrees of tip. “With two choices of body they are for customers that require the flexibility of being able to reduce the trailer to a flatbed for those other jobs,” Gary adds. “Our Linkage feeders are a real simple cost effective solution to either feeding out on very hilly country where traction maybe a problem, or you simply only have a few bales to feed. There are four models to choose from

including specialist feeders. “We have an extensive range of Bale feeders catering for all types of baled materials and all budgets, including top end products that feed large square bales. As bale weights get higher Agmech feeders offer the piece of mind that they can handle the job. There is no need to struggle with gear that isn’t up to it.” The company is also proud of the Jumbo bale feeders — which manage

Good health and safety is good business

Trough Valve Problems?

Injuries on the farm cost you time and money When there is real work to be done, worrying about health and safety can seem an unproductive use of your time. But it is worth remembering that good health and safety practices can bring real benefits to your business, and even improve the bottom line. For a start, being safety conscious can help you avoid costly damage to plant and machinery. It can also help you avoid injury related costs such as: • First aid • Decreased output caused by down time • The costs of replacing injured workers, eg. paying overtime to other employees, or searching for and hiring temporary staff.

Ideally, though, you should try to reduce injuries by actively managing hazards on your farm. To do this, apply the ‘eliminate, isolate, minimise’ approach: • Eliminate — if possible, remove as many hazards as you can that may cause injury • Isolate — reduce the potential for hazards to cause harm, eg by containing them, and installing safety devices. • Minimise — control hazards to reduce the risk, eg by wearing protective gear, providing training and information to your staff. To find out how a customised Health and Safety Plan can be beneficial to your business call us on 0800 545 747.

Back ache and lasting spinal damage Relief is at hand reports Sue from The Better Back Company. “Farmers are busy people and they’re not coming to town for treatments and medical visits. Giving them something that provides relief from back ache and keeps them safer while on the job, is like having decent work boots. Spinal deformation can be occurring when you feel only minor soreness and irritation at first, then over time back pain grows, especially in the lower back. Days off work cost. Investing in yourself and your workers pays.” NZ leads the world in farm use of the LUMBARJACK belts supplied by The

Better Back Company. They help prevent and manage back ache common in this manual labour industry with milking, shearing, calving, fencing, cropping, drenching, driving vehicles — tractors, heavy machinery, quads, your car or ute and so on. Lifting, carrying, leaning — all become easier with the support this belt gives. Or, if the pain from strain develops, a Nada Chair BACK-UP can effortlessly train correct posture; often giving instant relief from the niggles of an old injury, disc issues and medical conditions. Here’s what Mike, one Southern farmer said:

I purchased a LUMBARJACK support belt (excellent for drenching sheep, marking calves, lifting heavy items and general farm work I might add) and a Back-Up for the dreaded office work. Before, I had massage to free up tight muscles and get temporary relief from ongoing pain. Using these products my pain levels are manageable, I have increased fitness because of less pain, and life is far more enjoyable. I let my Father (broken retired farmer) try out the BACK-UP and he thought it was great.

Homeopathy a farming alternative Tineke Verkade trained and qualified as a registered naturopath and a medical herbalist. She has been in private practice since 1991 where several of her patients were dairy farmers and as a result of their requests she also started to treat dairy cows.

Playing your part Come and visit the Animal Health Board (AHB) at the Central Districts Field Days to register your herd and discuss the bovine tuberculosis (TB) control programme.

Homeopathic Farm Support began in 1997 in response to repeated requests from farmers for quality homeopathic products and professional information, education, guidelines and support in its safe and effective use. Tineke is now a well recognised business woman in the New Zealand livestock and dairy farming communities. In November 2009, her company won the Organics Aotearoa New Zealand Enterprise Award and Tineke was the Supreme Winner of the Enterprising Rural Women Award 2010. Many conventional farmers now use homeopathy for animal health in their farming operation. More than a quarter of Fonterra’s dairy farmers and a significant number of sheep and beef producers use homeopathy exclusively or along with conventional medications, due to the success they have experienced in improving and maintained animal health and farm productivity. Tineke has written a number of books and her most recently published is Homeopathy at Home, about first aid situations.

See our advert page 9

Our stand will be located in the Ag Pavilion, which we will be sharing with the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) scheme. Tineke Verkade — award winning naturopath

“What it does take to use homeopathy wisely is an ability to observe and note the onset and progress of symptoms, whether it be for influenza, or reaction to a drastic life happening, ear or eye problems, coughs, or pains,” Tineke says. “The book gives details of likely symptoms and developments for fiftyone acute ailments, and a whopping range of eighty-one potential remedies and what each is especially good for. If this sounds daunting, it does also have extremely good indexes, allowing for quick referencing.” HFS Ltd has always placed a high value on free information and training to empower farmers to better care for their animals in a cost effective, efficient natural way.

Under the national pest management plan, our primary aim is to eradicate TB from 2.5 million hectares of New Zealand by 2026 where the disease is still known to exist in possums. We also aim to prevent the establishment of new areas of infection in wild animals, such as ferrets, pigs and possums. Although keeping infected herds to low levels is still a key part of the TBfree New Zealand programme, managed by the AHB, our primary focus is on the problem of TB in possums – the main source of the disease in farmed cattle and deer. The AHB has made great strides in reducing the number of infected herds, particularly in the North Island. However, recent herd infections in both Taranaki and Northland are timely reminders that we all need to remain vigilant.

A possum with mandibular tuberculosis node lesion

Animal movements account for around 30 per cent of new herd TB infections, so it is important that herd owners are aware of their obligations and the disease risk in their area when moving stock off, or onto, their property. Cattle and deer herd owners can help the AHB move towards a TBfree New Zealand by registering their herd, meeting their testing requirements, correctly tagging their animals and completing Animal Status Declaration (ASD) forms for all stock movements. Only by working together can we eradicate the disease from New Zealand. Play your part in helping us help you by visiting our stand in the Ag Pavilion, contacting the AHB on 0800 482 4636 or visitingwww.tbfree.org.nz.

Old fashioned ingenuity — and that’s no bull! WHY USE BARROWBULL? Ever tried loading a skip bin with a normal wheelbarrow?

Then you know how hard it is to lift and push at the same time. Isn’t life hard enough? Try the BarrowBull. Loading skips is safer and you won’t strain your back as BarrowBull pulls you up the ramp with no need for a run up.

See us at Field Days on BarrowBull is manoeuvrable, lightweight. the CTM Whether you’re moving firewood, concrete Tractors stand or dirt, the BarrowBull makes your job quicker, safer and easier… no bull! Call 021 137 7715

www.barrowbull.co.nz

Tim Porter became an inventor in the same way as most Kiwi blokes — tinkering from an early age with motors, fascinated with the smell of petrol burning and the possibilities of speed and power. But while most men end up creating the same old go-karts and motorised beer coolers, Tim’s mind struck upon an inspiration which changed the course of his life. It’s an idea so simple that many folks have kicked themselves for not conceiving of it first, but it’s one which is set to save the nation — and the world — a whole lot of back aches! Tim is the inventor of the Barrow Bull, a fully motorised wheelbarrow with a unique patented design. What began as a novelty idea quickly became a serious undertaking for the rural innovator, and has now come to fruition as both a ‘lightweight’ 100kg unit and a beefier ‘heavy duty’ model for tradespeople and builders. Even in its smaller form the Barrow Bull packs a lot of power — making it easy for just about anyone to use. The prototype was test-driven by Tim’s 70-year-old father, who reported a complete success, and has gone on to become a safe, manoeuvrable, convenient addition to anyone’s collection of power equipment. The Barrow Bull is perfect for those who suffer from back pain, as it takes away the strenuous pushing and heaving required with traditional barrows and heavy loads. Skips can be loaded safely with no run up, and steep inclines become no challenge

at all as the Barrow Bull’s powerful motor does the work for you. Tim has had great success with the Barrow Bull at the Fielding Field Days, and now hopes to bring the ease and convenience of his invention to the wider public. What began as simple tinkering has grown into a well-designed, robust and cleverly executed example of ingenuity — well worth a look if you’re involved with the building, landscaping, maintenance or rural industries. And as for future plans? No one can guess what revolutionary ideas will come from Tim’s shed next, but chances are that pretty soon the Barrow Bull will be as ubiquitous as the lawnmower or the chainsaw in the sheds of New Zealand.

Serving rural needs Normanby Fibreglass/Armourshield Engineering is a company that has been dedicated to the needs of the farmers since the mid 90s. “While talking with farmers after the introduction of PKE it became apparent there was a need for a robust mobile feed trough that could take the feed suppliments to the stock instead of bringing the stock to the farm suppliments, and that is when the original troughMOBILE® feed trough was designed and manufactured,” says managing director Paul Schrader. “Prior to this there was no suitable mobile feed trough available and farmers were frustrated with the damage and hassle from using their car trailers. Other companies seeing the success of this have tried to emulate the original concept but to date we believe troughMOBILE® is still the market leader and offers the best value and quality for their money.” With a range of 15 troughs, the company has something to suit most farmers. “This year at the Central Districts Field Days in conjunction with Agrifert we are introducing a new, simple to use and time efficient mobile spray tank trailer to take the hard work out of applying urea and liquid fertilisers to paddocks,” adds Mr Schrader. “Woodsplitter manufacturing in our production engineering facility at Normanby is continually growing so to make splitting your firewood enjoyable we manufacture and sell the high performing Pierce Woodsplitters and Wood Elevator range. It takes all the hard work out of splitting your wood. We will be demonstrating these at the Central Districts Field Days.”

For those living ‘off the grid’, away from town wastewater infrastructure, the old fashioned option of a traditional septic system has been superseded by new technology; an innovative new approach pioneered right here in the Kaipara.

Allen of Hahei beach, a very satisfied Naturalflow customer. “I would highly recommend this system.” In the Taranaki, conditions are perfect for this kind of revolutionary system. Dairy farms with sharemilkers on site often experience big changes in staff numbers, and accommodation, with its associated costs, can prove a big concern. By using a system which not only effectively processes waste water, but also has the capacity to recirculate processed, safe ‘grey water’ back into dams or for use in irrigation, costs can be cut at both ends of the water cycle. As water supply, especially in the hot summer months is also a concern, the possibility exists to save on water input, and on water output too. By combining tried and tested bio-science with an innovative new approach to wastewater management, Naturalflow has become a home-grown success story. Today Waterflow NZ Ltd have qualified installers, drainage engineers and representatives across New Zealand who support the Naturalflow

Waterflow NZ Ltd is the name of the company behind the Naturalflow system, a new kind of power-free, ecologically friendly wastewater treatment system — one which offers cost and environmental benefits without the need for specialist plumbing. The modular in-ground system is designed and constructed in the Kaipara by local engineers and entrepreneurs, is moulded from durable plastic by Ruawai company Portstar Plastics, and assembled in Maungaturoto by Waterflow NZ Ltd to ship across New Zealand. New homes, and indeed homes which require a wastewater system upgrade due to expansion or renovations, are a perfect match with the odourless, elegant Naturalflow design. Harnessing the power of nature to break down waste in a chemicalfree, power-free manner, the system saves water (especially in grey water processing), and is already receiving praise from early adopters. “The unit has worked without a hitch since the day we started using it — now over two years ago,” says R.S.

Preventing facial eczema Facial Eczema is a disease caused by fungal spores from the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that produce a toxin which when ingested by cattle can lead to the damage of liver and bile ducts. This fungus (FE) can cause lower milk production and occasionally death from liver damage. The damaged liver is unable to rid the body of wastes and the breakdown product of chlorophyll build up in the body causing sensitivity to sunlight, which can then lead to inflammation of the skin. The first signs of FE usually show up as a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores (sub clinical FE), other signs may include cows being restless at milking time, seeking shade and licking their udder. As facial eczema becomes more obvious, another drop in milk production may be seen and exposed un-pigmented skin may thicken and peel, especially prone are the white areas on cattle, teats and udder and inside the hind legs may also be affected. It is important to remember that not all animals may show physical signs of clinical facial eczema, but some may have had liver damage occur (sub clinical FE). Facial Eczema spores are produced when minimum grass temperature are above 12° for two or three nights and humidity is usually high, this can occur in the months (January to May). The fungus grows on soft matter in the base

of the pasture, so hard grazing during this period of increased spore activity may also increase the risk of spore uptake by cattle. Prevention should start early with Zinc treatment, ideally two to three weeks before the spore growth danger period, for the most beneficial protection. One product that is suitable is Zinc 50 from Vetpak, it is a free flowing Zinc Oxide 50% liquid suspension to aid in the treatment and prevention of Facial Eczema in cattle and sheep, and is ideally suited for drenching or adding through an inline water medication system. Zinc 50 is suitable for long term daily dosing until the pasture to be grazed is safe from fungal spores. Zinc 50 has a nil milk withhold period and is suitable for dairy cows. Zinc 50 is available from your local veterinarian. Another product in the Vetpak stable is Green Apple Flavouring, which is a ready to use liquid flavour additive designed to mask unpleasant tastes such as Zinc Oxide. Green Apple can be added to drinking water, dry feed or mineral drenches such as Zinc Oxide or Magnesium Sulphate/ Chlorides and this makes it an ideal partner when using Zinc products to treat Facial Eczema. Green Apple Flavouring and Zinc 50 are both available from your local veterinarian.

Long-lasting protection Using New Zealand-produced lanolin, selectively chosen from quality suppliers, the Prolan team have combined strong practical engineering and science backgrounds to create an environmentally friendly, high performance corrosion inhibitor, industrial lubricant and anti-seize greases for use in a multitude of areas. Established in 2003 by directors Murray and Julie Shaw, the Taurangabased company has continued to grow

both in New Zealand and internationally. Prolan’s unique, versatile products are exported around the world and used in some of the toughest and coldest environments, protecting machinery, vehicles and even wind turbines. “Prolan products are replacing traditional petro-chemical lubricants in Europe and one company alone has replaced 25 products with ours,” said Julie. In New Zealand, corrosion inhibitors

sprayed on the underside of quad bikes have proven to slow down deterioration. “Bikes used on dairy farms probably

need an application every nine to 12 months but for those on sheep and beef farms, one application can last up to two years.” The Prolan team are committed to understanding the needs of their customers and are willing to help solve corrosion, lubrication and antiseize problems. At this year’s field days, the new Prolan Enduro range — a corrosion inhibitor — will be available. “This product dries off to a less tacky finish, attracting less dust and sand, stays on for a long period of time, resists coldwater blasting, and maintains machinery, tools etc in excellent condition.” Julie said the field days provide an ideal opportunity for staff to have oneto-one contact with customers.

Double your battery life with smart chemistry The humble battery is an oftenoverlooked keystone of modern technology. Your car, truck or tractor won’t start without one, and there’s an endless list of toys, games, appliances and emergency items which rely on a lead-acid ‘heart’ to keep pumping. The battery may very well have been invented in ancient Mesopotamia, but its modern form goes back over 100 years. Electrical pioneers like Edison would easily recognise even the most modern car batteries of today — and they’d be able to tell you about their biggest problem, too. All lead acid batteries suffer from sulphation — the build up of the element sulphur inside from regular use. It’s unavoidable, and even batteries new off the shelf already have the beginnings of sulphation, and this is the process which will finally finish off many batteries. There is an answer, however, and it

can extend your battery life up to eight or even ten years! Recharge battery technology is designed to dissolve the sulphur ions back into the electrolyte, stopping the corrosion of the battery’s lead plate and allowing it to hold a charge again. The results have to be seen to be believed — Recharge literally breathes new life back into lead-acid batteries. Even sealed batteries can be successfully treated and restored with this easy-to — use method.Treat them new and see the difference! Recharge is available from Farmlands and Auto-One,and will be featured at the forthcoming Field Days for all to see. You can also check out www.recharge.net.nz for more info about the science involved — a breakthrough which is putting more spark under the hoods of Kiwi vehicles.

Dairying Soil Matters — with Peter Burton

Better quality with higher production There is a widespread misconception that improving the quality of what we grow and produce from the land will result in lower volumes. This argument is used by supporters and users of conventional growing systems to justify a regime that increasingly struggles with the speed and magnitude of the changes now required.

produce the quality and quantity of food required for a healthy and productive population without modifying soil chemistry in some way doesn’t make sense.

The production of a healthy plant, animal, or person is always greater than a less healthy one. So too with soil, healthy well-structured biologically active soil will always produce more than a semi-sterile, compacted piece of dirt.

Our soils are naturally not suited to the production of a wide range of fruit, vegetables, crops and pasture, so an understanding of the nutrient requirements of each is necessary. Some of that knowledge is available and the rest is being steadily gained through observation and measurement.

Eight years ago we started making products based on calcium and magnesium that included live fungi and bacteria and integrating them into conventional soil fertility programmes providing phosphorus and sulphur, and potassium where required. The notion that New Zealand can

Careful measuring of growing systems based on DoloZest, containing Golden Bay Dolomite, over the last eight years has shown that soil is better structured than that under conventional growing systems, particularly those reliant

In a pastoral situation the nitrogen required for near maximum growth is provided direct from the atmosphere and via fixation by clovers. The spread of growth throughout the season is more even as soils rich in humus are better able to provide nutrient and moisture to plants on an as required basis.

the quality of the meat is also better. Milk produced from these properties typically has higher protein content.Per animal production is greater and the cost of treating ill animals is significantly reduced. The ability of animals to maintain a twelve month calving and lambing interval is also improved. Recently the first fourteen months of Nitrate-Nitrogen leaching results were made available and they show significantly lower levels of Nitrate-N lost from the DoloZest/CalciZest based programme compared to a fertiliser N driven programme. There is no down side; volume is higher, costs are less, and each year there is the potential for increased production due to more soil-stored carbon. Dairying this problem, and the young lush grass had nothing to do with it, then what caused this sole ulcer?

Hoof Print

One other thing I want to mention is water. Cows would do much better if they had plenty of access to water. Often when they leave the paddock for milking they don’t have any water available until they get back into the paddock. That is way too long, especially on hot days. I wonder how it would go if there were single drinking pots in every stand on the platform in the cow shed. It would be a good way to get cows onto the platform and may even work better than meal. I would be very interested in receiving your feedback on this topic.

With Fred Hoekstra

Does diet affect hoof health As we now are in the holiday season on the cow in picture 1. The sole ulcer in it may be a good time to think about the picture is just an advanced stage of food. Food for cows, I mean! There is a normal bruise. If the bruising happens still a lot of discussion on whether or because of external force then why do not diet has an effect on hoof health. If they look so similar? If they were caused we think about the many different ways by standing on stones then I would our human bodies can react to various expect a much more even pattern over foods and the outward symptoms we the whole claw. Sometimes I clean the observe, then it is not illogical to also wall of the claw with my grinder just to think that our cows can present with see what symptoms can be found there. In the second picture physical symptoms you can see some that are indicative of haemorrhage in the dietary imbalances wall of the claw. How or intolerances. does it get there? If you I am a strong look at this evidence, advocate for the it is hard to argue inclusion of a greater that those bruises are amount of straw in caused by the physical our cow’s diet. One of causes that so many the main arguments people believe. I encounter with this Example 1 I appreciate that suggestion is that disproving one theory straw would substitute grass and therefore minimise energy doesn’t prove another. So, I can’t say intake and subsequently reduce milk that this evidence is conclusive, that it is production. I am not a nutritionist, diet that causes the problems for those but I would like to explain what has cows, but I can say that there has to be influenced my thinking based upon a problem with the corium (live tissue) my regular observations of the cows’ on the inside of the claw. Especially if feet I deal with. With this evidence you can make up your own mind whether or not diet has an impact on hoof health. We trim around 15,000 cows in a year. This is a combination of preventative and curative trimming. Out of those 15,000 cows there may be a handful of cows that show no haemorrhage at all; so, therefore, most cows in New Zealand have haemorrhaging or bruising in their hooves. Admittedly, in some of those cows you have to look carefully for the haemorrhage but, nevertheless it is there. The interesting thing is that most cows have the same pattern of haemorrhage where the main bruise is in the spot where the sole ulcer is shown

Example 2

you see sole ulcers in claws, as shown in the photo, when the cow in question is a beef cow! This animal doesn’t even know what a stone looks like. It doesn’t get pushed over tracks, doesn’t have to stand on yards and isn’t under stress. So, if it is not physical force that caused
