TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

Young Taranaki local wins

The Taranaki Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand company.

The 2017 Poultry Industry Trainee of the Year, Henry Miles, won’t be resting on his laurels. As assistant manager of a Taranaki Tegel meat chicken farm, Henry will soon be stepping up to manage a new, large free-range farm, expanding to a total of eight sheds.

From left: Poultry Industry Association of New Zealand chairman Adrian Revell presents Henry Miles with his award

The 21-year-old has gained a thorough grounding in poultry farming since leaving school in 2014. His employer, Ed Whiting, said Henry is an ‘awesome and very able employee’ who progressed quickly from doing maintenance work and driving a tractor, to taking a steadily larger role in the operation of the farm, including helping to employ and manage staff. The annual Poultry Industry Trainee of the Year award goes to the topperforming trainee in the National Certificate in Poultry Husbandry course (Level 3) — a one year qualification developed by the poultry industry in cooperation with Primary ITO. The course comprises a mix of on-the-job training, written assessments and attendance at a block course. “Henry displayed all the Trainee of the Year characteristics with his ability to complete class assessments and his on-farm capability, but he took all this a step further and utilised his knowledge to help others in the class, and also in

his workplace,” said Primary ITO course coordinator Tanya Ingram. Henry said he especially enjoyed the management training aspects of the course. “As a young person who is involved in hiring and managing people, including older people, it was really useful to learn some of the skills and techniques you need,” he said. Henry plans to add to his knowledge and skills by taking the Primary ITO Level 4 supervisory and management course. Poultry Industry Association of New Zealand (PIANZ) executive director Michael Brooks said a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce is vital for the growth and profitability of the industry. “This award reflects our strong commitment to training and education. “It is notable that the poultry sector has the highest number of personnel with Primary ITO qualifications compared with any other agricultural sector.” Henry was flown to Auckland to meet the PIANZ board and attend a lunch at which he was the guest of honour.

What’s happening over the cattle stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Taranaki Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one. The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Positive start for Taratahi

Taratahi’s efforts to attract new students has paid off with solid enrolments for 2018. “Taratahi upped its marketing and as a result, the definite enrolments for 2018 are looking great and the institution’s taster courses have attracted large numbers of students,” says Chief executive Arthur Graves. “Taratahi and the wider primary industry have been promoting the jobrich agricultural environments and extensive career pathways on offer, and those campaigns are now yielding some great results.” The institution is also adapting its farming systems in response to consumer demands for greater visibility over the provenance of their food. “This year Taratahi is introducing ‘sexed’ bull semen that almost solely produces female calves — negating the need for the bobby calf trade which is becoming less acceptable to the public. Our aim is to use this innovation to ensure we have zero bobby calves on all our dairy farms. “It also means our students are exposed to some of the latest on-farm methods while educating them about ‘bigger picture’ of where farming is heading with lower input, more animal welfare friendly, environmentally friendly, traceable natural food. “We have also worked hard to attract prospective students from the city,

Pay attention!

by showing them there are a range of interesting career options in what is now a ver y complex and rewarding sector.” “This has resulted in strong demand for Taratahi’s 2018 courses with more students already enrolled in a range of programmes at the nine campuses around the country, than at the same time in 2017. “We are finding that students are keen for a different experience in another region — so many students are coming from all over New Zealand. “An extra area of business is the increasing demand from agricultural service organisations seeking practical on-farm experiences for their staff and we anticipate this market will continue to expand.” Farm insurance companies, farm advisors and government departments who deal with primary sector and health and safety issues, are a growing customer base for the tailored farm experience and team building programmes. “That means that Taratahi is providing an on-farm education and experience that gives policy makers and influencers a chance to learn the practicalities of modern farming methods while mixing with students who will be tomorrow’s farm leaders.”

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

Positive feedback from buyers gave Pete and Rebecca Sherie the incentive to expand the scale of their calf-raising operation. In 2016 the Hawera couple established Chet Farms and a recent move to a larger property will enable to them to raise up to 400 calves each year.

T

he couple initially began raising a small number of calves, mostly for enjoyment, over a two year period. Buyers of their youngstock were impressed with how quiet and well-cared for the calves were, and also held an interest in the traceability of the animals. Pete and Rebecca are both employed full-time as police officers working various shifts in Hawera. They manage their careers along with raising their two young children and running Chet Farms. Friesian cross calves are sourced locally from farmers around south Taranaki which works well for all parties involved. Rebecca said they like to buy calves in large groups regardless of the sex,

4

markings or colour but are also happy to take even two to three calves if that is all someone has available. “We will take any number of calves that are available so long as they are healthy and well looked after.” “After speaking to a few farmers, a common theme we were hearing was they were unhappy when a buyer would say they would take all of the calves but then only select a few of the best and leave the others,” said Pete. “A couple also stated they were sick of trying to get the calves to the sales, and by the time they took the transport costs and agent fees out, it wasn’t worthwhile and a lot of time and effort.” From the start of establishing their business, Pete and Rebecca wanted to

create a good reputation as providers of quality calves. “We decided the only way to achieve this was to establish it as a family business and grow it from there,” said Pete. “We knew from previously buying weaned calves from the sale yards that you have no idea where the calves come from, how they have been reared or what the conditions are like there. “You might be lucky to end up with a lovely healthy, quiet calf or you could end with one that is sickly or hard to handle.” “We want people to know that we control where we get the calves from, selecting them from farms where we know that the conditions are ideal and the farmers look

after them in those first few days.” The couple ensure their calves are handreared and regularly handled so are quiet when weaned. Rebecca said the calves are well looked after, sometimes even spoilt, including having rugs on them from day one. “Our aim is to produce and sell calves as weaners knowing they have been reared as well as they can be, are nice and quiet and ready to be sold to lifestyle block owners.” When calves first arrive on the property, they are arranged into groups of approximately 11 to a pen. This grouping is determined by factors such as size, age and feeding capability. “We believe this gives the calves the best opportunity to be fed and housed in the best environment possible,” said Pete. The calves are raised in the shed for close to two weeks before let out into a training paddock. In the training paddocks, calves learn about respecting electric fencing, mobile feeders, feed and water troughs. “This allows them to still access their pen for shelter but they have the freedom to run around the paddock and be introduced to grass,” said Rebecca. “When they graduate to living outside full-time, we like to keep the group to around 40 calves to a paddock. “As the calves grow we move them into new groups depending on their milk and feed requirements, so the groups are constantly changing.” Depending on their shift-work hours, Pete and Rebecca take turns feeding the calves. “We feed them on a once-a-day regime and they are normally fed in the mornings around 9am,” said Rebecca. “At the moment we start around June/July and normally we are feeding them right up to December. “However we were still feeding the

Heading out to feed the calves smaller calves in February this year. We are always looking to source calves from new farms and are continually on the lookout for fresh milk we can buy or have, whether it be colostrum milk or penicillin milk.” Up until moving to their new 15 acre block, with an additional 15 acres of lease land near Hawera, the number of calves the couple could raise was limited. Now they hope to raise between 300-400 calves. “We have been raising spring calves up till now but have managed to source some autumn calves for next year,” said Pete. Calves are weaned around the 80kg mark and once they hit 100kg they are

ready for sale. The couple have regular buyers in Feilding and Auckland but also sell calves locally. “We would like to thank all the people who have been involved with us over the years, helping us build Chet Farms into what it is today,” said Rebecca. The couple aim to grow the business sufficiently so that they can concentrate on it full time.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY DENISE GUNN Shortly after the arrival of one in-calf Hereford cow to their property in 2002, Marcus and Nichola McLeod became hooked on the breed. The couple have since built up their herd size to 80 registered Hereford cows.

A

t the time of the cow’s arrival, the couple owned a 40 acre block used for heifer grazing. They were contemplating starting a small stud of their own, and the cow purchased from Hereford breeder Peter McDonald, sealed their decision. Within a few years Marcus and Nichola’s herd size increased to 15 registered Hereford cows, all bought from local breeders. “After buying a larger property in 2007, we were able to build up to a herd of 80 registered cows from local breeders, a dispersal sale of the Verrard Stud in Te Kuiti, and a few heifers from the Otapawa Stud in Masterton,” said Nichola. “All our cows are registered purebred and performance recorded with the New Zealand Hereford Society.

“We have purchased stud bulls over the years from the National Beef Expo sale, and low birth weight bulls from the Ardo and Riverton Studs and local breeders.” With the McLeod’s farm looking out to the sea and the distant horizon, their stud was duly named Horizon Herefords. Marcus grew up on a dairy farm before moving with his family to an orchard in Kaiaua. Although Nichola didn’t have a farming background, her parents owned a few acres in Wanganui where she kept horses and competed in eventing. When the couple left university in 1995, they both applied for jobs all around New Zealand. “Marcus got a job in rural banking in Taranaki and we have been here ever since.”

“He’s still in banking and I am the head coach at Riding for the Disabled,” said Nichola. In 2007 the family moved to a larger 57ha property. The property, previously a dairy farm, is tucked under the Pouakai Ranges almost 360 metres above sea level. The high annual rainfall of close to three metres is challenging. “The past 18 months have been a bit of a nightmare to say the least due to the continual rain,” said Marcus. “In just a six-month period we had 2.4 metres.” The farm’s high altitude can cause conditions around calving time to be difficult too. During a storm the couple are often out all hours of the night to check the newborns are up and feeding. Despite not having a farming background, Nichola has grown fond of working with Herefords due to their quiet nature. She also likes the competitiveness of having stud stock. “We have found the biggest advantage of having Herefords is their fantastic temperament, and their ability to do well and retain condition over winter and when conditions are tough,” said Nichola. “As I do most of the stock work myself, it’s great that I can drench, weigh them, get anything in for the vet etc with no fuss.” “I’m never worried about working with the bulls and over the years have built up a really quiet herd of cows,” she said. The couple’s two teenage daughters, Alanah and Danielle, also enjoy walking through the cows and young calves, patting the cattle that approach them. The McLeod’s stud aim is to breed

low to moderate birth weight bulls, with an excellent temperament for the dairy market. “We retain 15 heifers for replacements and sell the remaining heifer calves when weaned in February/March. “Previously we have sold the bulls as yearlings in the paddock.” The couple’s goal to have an on-farm sale was achieved in September. “We were approached by Rodney Jupp in Tikorangi — another registered Hereford breeder, and combined with a few other breeders to hold a bull sale at Rodney’s property. “Just prior to that we were able to secure a small lease block so that we could retain a few of the bulls.” Marcus and Nichola hope to continue to build on this sale, and with the 12

yearling bulls retained will be able to offer both yearlings and two-year-old bulls in 2018. The couple are members of the local Taranaki Hereford Club with Marcus as treasurer. “A highlight earlier this year was our very small Taranaki Hereford Club successfully hosting the New Zealand National Hereford Herd Tour,” said Marcus. “We were able to showcase our animals to other Hereford breeders in New Zealand. “As a region we received very positive comments about the stock we had and the positive direction we were heading in.”

too,” said Tony. “This is a way of bringing people together and doing something more practical than just talking about the challenges we face. “Many issues face farmers in New Zealand. There’s an increase in farmer depression and suicides. This annual rural sculpture festival will encourage farmers throughout the country to take some time out and head to their workshop to create a sculpture that says something about their relationship to their landscape.” Tony said it is an opportunity for rural people to have a go as many may not have considered themselves artists. “There is $11,000 in prize money, enough time to get the creative juices flowing and move a bit of gear around in the shed before entries close in late March.” The Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Charitable Trust offer a New Zealandwide sculpture award of $5,000 and a Creative Cocky award of $2,000. There will also be a prize of $1,000 for the best ‘local’ sculpture as well as a young person’s award, and a people’s choice award. Sixteen schools within a 30 kilometre radius of Kimbolton are also being encouraged to take part in the competition. The awards are a national event but a special under 18 years section will only be open to an invited 16 schools in the first year of the competition. Festival Day organiser Stewart Morton said the competition encourages upcycling and recycling. “It’s about seeing what there is already around you that could be used to say something about rural New Zealand,” he said. TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

Past its use-by date by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

A new model is needed that covers all parts of our agricultural system and lessens the negative impacts on our topsoil, waterways and environment as a whole. The current model of agro-chemical production is well past its use-by date and out of kilter with today’s consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Here at Agrissentials we already have the new model of fertility, based around Mother Nature, which is

2

designed to remineralise and revitalise deficient topsoil, all for the price of our fertilisers, which are in line with current fertiliser costs, but with all the benefits of building a multi-mineral, microbial rich, worm wriggling, water retaining soil, enhancing the farm and protecting the environment. In the mid 1980s, as a commercial

grower of produce for the Japanese market, my squash plants failed to grow. This created a major change in my thinking, to a point where I made a move towards using more natural fertilisers and managing chemicals out of my spray programme; focussing on getting more mineral content to the plant, so that it would build its own immune system. What a difference that made not only to the plant’s health and production, but also to my health. There is no denying that our planet is in the midst of an ecological crisis. However, thanks to gravity, all the elements needed to repair the system and especially the soils are still here on the planet. Basically, the best top soils are made up of rock dust deposited on the plains and in the valleys through glacial movement. Microorganisms and worm life flourish in a chemical free environment and these beautiful creatures are essential to having healthy, productive topsoil. To grow good healthy plants you need minerals, microbes, sunlight and water, not one or two minerals but a full spectrum of minerals in a completely natural form — not synthetic! Not just one or two microbes, but a full array of microorganisms in mega numbers. This

is what we specialise in; multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bringing health and vitality back to soils, plants, animals, humans and the environment. Our fertilisers are living fertilisers which encourage worm life, which in turn increases mineral potency on average 306% over all minerals taken through the worm’s gizzard and deposited in their castings. (Brookside Laboratories research on worm castings). For over 20 years Agrissentials has been passionately dedicated to manufacturing the highest quality, safest and easiest to handle natural fertilisers that get results. We are BioGro certified but you don’t need to be certified to gain all the benefits of our products. Most of our customers are conventional farmers but choose to use our products because they reap all the productivity benefits with no negative impacts to people, the animals or the environment. The Ministry for Primary Industries and its dairy industry partners have decided to extend the Mycoplasma bovis milk testing already underway into a national milk surveillance programme. While there is no indication that the disease is present beyond the areas currently identified, checking for other possible regional clusters is essential to building a complete picture of the disease in New Zealand. The programme will involve testing three milk samples from every dairy farm. One sample will be taken from bulk milk as part of the regular sampling process at milk collection. Farmers will also be required to provide two samples from ‘discard milk’ (milk unsuitable for collection, for example, from cows with mastitis). Mycoplasma bovis is more easily identified in milk taken from otherwise sick animals, which makes testing of the discard milk a valuable surveillance tool. The extended milk testing programme enhances the existing nationwide Mycoplasma bovis surveillance activity, which includes tracing of animal movements from infected and suspect farms, vets looking for signs of the disease, testing of any animals with clinical signs, and testing all mastitis milk sent to laboratories. Mycoplasma bovis is not a food safety risk. It is a disease that affects animal

7

welfare and production and only affects bovines, including dairy cows and beef cattle. It is common in many foodproducing nations such as Australia, the United States, and in Europe.

2

The programme is expected to begin in February and will be rolled out region by region. More information will be provided by MPI as the details of the programme are finalised.

The mystery of pipelines

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

Pipes, hoses and other means of water conveyance are one of the most maligned part of an irrigation or water delivery system. This also applies to household and stock water systems. call 0800 436 566 or visit www.dolomite.co.nz

Usually some generosity is made towards the pump and equipment purchase but then the purse strings tighten and the minimum diameter pipe will be used, perhaps egged on by an unqualified salesman who has a special price on offer — just because someone told you it is appropriate “my relative uses it on his farm” etc doesn’t mean that it will do the job for you. It is almost impossible to have too large a pipeline diameter (within financial constraints), contrary to urban myth I often come up against. Another myth is the “you need to reduce the pipe size as you get further out to keep the liquid speed up”. Quite incorrect as a bit of experimenting or google of “pressure drop” will show. Any knowledgeable specialists should be able to calculate the size required from the flow required over the distance

2

2

required and then apply acceptable pressure loss, to reach correct sized pipe. It isn’t rocket science. All reputable pipe manufacturers will have friction loss tables which should be referred to. Ask to see the calculation, after all you are paying for their product! This is particularly so if working in PE or uPVC pipe. These products are extruded with a standard sized outside diameter and different wall thicknesses are used (giving different internal bore sizes) to give the various pressure ratings. As the walls thicken the flow speed and pressure loss will increase. So if say MDOD90 6.3bar pipe is considered for flow of 30,000 l/hr, RX Plastics Technical Guide gives friction loss of 2.9 mH loss/ 100m. Let’s assume the job is 1,000m (29mH loss, 42 psi) rather high but for the sake of the example: If during the installation this were changed to MDOD90 9 bar due to short supply or whatever, the same manual tells us that MDOD90 9 bar at 30,000 l/H has 3.6 mH /100m or 52 psi loss over the distance. 7mH/ 10 psi could mean the performance is possibly going to be short of desired.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann Morgan

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe in a clean and green environment and taking care of our farms and rural properties. Utilising the wax from honey bee hives to create wax wraps is one way they are helping the environment.

S

tacia originates from the United States and has lived in New Zealand for 10 years and Miko was born in India and raised in Australia. The couple met at a yoga retreat in Coromandel and they now call New Zealand home with baby Kio. “We were travelling around New Zealand and felt inspired by the beauty and were determined to reduce our plastic use and impact on the environment and the idea flourished,” says Stacia. “At the time I was teaching yoga, and the idea to create something natural really appealed to us. We already recycle

and reduce our caustic use as much as possible and we decided to pursue the wrap idea and it became serious. “Bees are incredible, and they lend some of their magical property to the wax which helps us. They are awesome creatures — they pollinate our plants and pastures which helps create the oxygen we breathe. We use local wax as much as possible and when a bee flies by we often wonder if that bee has made the wax we use.” The couple found the wax they originally used didn’t work well and there was a lot of frustration with the original recipe.

2 The couple were inspired by the beauty of nature to reduce plastic waste whilst travelling around New Zealand

“Miko found a great recipe and we changed the wax we used,” says Stacia. “We source as much wax as possible locally and started selling our Lilybee wraps at a farmers’ market. Farmers are enjoying having our wrap for their food whilst out working, and being in touch with nature and the environment they appreciate having an alternative to plastic.” The wraps are reusable and Miko says that element appeals to country folk. “It is hard to do anything without plastic being involved. Just look at the shelves in your local supermarket — everything is covered in plastic, even fruits and vegetables are shrink-wrap packaged and bagged,” he says. “Farmers appreciate having a natural product and it is a way to connect with bees. There are lots of types of wax just as there is many types of honey.” Stacia says people trying to make wraps at home can be disappointed by the results because different waxes have different properties but they are all antiseptic and antibacterial. “Airtight seals can be created around containers with wax wraps, and they are great for workers making hay or silage or bringing in stock. Put in a chilly bin and you are good to go for the day.

12

Miko and Stacia utilise local honey bee wax to create their environmentally friendly wax wraps

“Even the honey smell is welcomed by those who use them. The wraps help cheese stay fresh for longer and it helps hold extra large sandwiches together. “One couple wasn’t sure how it would work for them until they wrapped half an onion and forgot it was in the fridge for a few weeks. It came out totally fine and now they have a set each.” All products are hand made — from mixing the ingredients — to melting it down and creating the recipe — the mixture is also applied to the cotton by hand. “You need to be careful with the process as wax won’t come off if you get it on things like your clothes. Each wrap should last at least a year with proper care. After use give it a wash with cool water and eco friendly detergent

2

and keep it out of direct sunlight for quality control. “You can easily make reusable bags for storing your snacks, herbs or salad leaves in the fridge. One of my favourite uses is making a bag to place fresh flowers in as a gift. Add a little bit of water and paper and it won’t seep through the wax. “We sell online at our Lilybee store and enjoy connecting with customers and providing a quality natural product. “We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside the rural community and nature. It is great to see New Zealand becoming more clean and green, and being able to use the wax from beehives adds to that.” 2

Sisters win photography competition

by Denise Gunn

A dairy farming couple’s two daughters are among the winners in the annual IHC Calf and Rural Scheme photo competition. It was the first photo competition the girls, Anne Barrow, 14, and Maria Barrow, 12, of south Dannevirke had entered. The IHC Calf and Rural Scheme introduced the competition in 2013. Prior to this, a colouring competition was held which Anne had also won previously. After reading about the photo competition in an IHC newsletter, Anne and Maria decided to enter. Using their family’s camera, a Canon PowerShot 2006 SX170 IS, the sisters took several photos around the farm and with pet calves before deciding which photos to send in. The girls’ mother Diane said all her children got on board taking photos and were competing with each other. The competition criteria covered photos of pledged calves, other calves, farming scenes, rural scenes and anything particularly ‘New Zealand’. Photos with people could be included

if permission had been given by those photographed. Diane said her family found out that Anne and Maria were competition winners by email. “I was out at the time and when I got home was told to check the computer. They were dancing and bouncing around with excitement.” Winning the competition has encouraged the sisters to continue taking photographs for further contests. “We will be keeping an eye out for more and looking out for more things to enter,” said Diane. Staff at the IHC national office judged the photo competition. Maria won the 8 to 12 year age group and Anne was the winner of the 13 to 18 year category.
