Mrs Gunn was awarded Best Junior Feature/Lifestyle Journalist Class one in the Community Newspaper Awards held in Rotorua. Her colleague, Ann van Engelen of Integrity’s sister masthead Northern Farming Lifestyles, also was a winner for her array of subject matter including stories on ‘bananas, llamas, wearable art and more’. “My general manager, Deb Wright, contacted me and told me I had won,” said Mrs Gunn. “It was a complete surprise, and I was in total disbelief. I had forgotten I had entered and I would like to congratulate all the other placegetters and entrants too.” Mrs Gunn says taking out an award is encouraging and “helps me realise that as a writer I am actually contributing stories that readers enjoy. “I have always enjoyed writing and started out as a journalist for the Manawatu Standard. “When the Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles started arriving in our letterbox, I thought the paper had

potential and phoned the managing director, Allan Mortensen, to see if they needed a reporter on the ground down here. “He offered me a job, and the team at Integrity Community Media has been very supportive and encouraging along the way. “I enjoy finding out about different farming operations and rural lifestyles, as well as writing about a variety of topics. I am always on the lookout for new and interesting subjects around the Taranaki and Manawatu rural communities. Living rurally in the region keeps me connected to local happenings and able to interact on many levels.” Integrity Community Media managing director, Allan Mortensen, says he is extremely proud of his staff members’ accomplishments. “In spite of all the naysayers, print media is extremely strong in this day and age. The reason for the success of our publications is because we have highly-trained and passionate journalists like Denise who create content that people want to read.”

Indoor sheepdog trials raise funds for charity

by Denise Gunn

The Taranaki Dog Trial Showring Club celebrated its 10th anniversary this month with 220 dogs entered in its annual indoor competition, raising $3,000 for charity. This year close to 100 competitors, including five novices and 20 women, travelled from all over the North Island to put their dogs through their paces. The event was judged by Bernard Arends, with assistance from his wife Maree, of Dannevirke. The 2017 reigning champion, Anna Hardwick-Smith from Mangamingi near Eltham, almost pulled off back-to-back wins. She eventually had to settle for second place when veteran triallist, Rod Mead from Gisborne, with his dog Lad, scored 99 points in the run-off. Rod scored the top prize of $1,000. The trials were first held in 2008 after a group of enthusiasts, led by Graeme Northcott, got together to organise an indoor sheepdog trial showring event. “Graeme had the vision, and we all shared his passion,” said club entry secretary, Brenda O’Leary. The group formed the Taranaki Dog Trial Showring Club and have since held indoor sheepdog trials on an annual basis. Graeme said the trials cater to every level of competitor who have ranged in age from 12 to 84 years. One of the club’s core aims has been to encourage young and new competitors into the sport. “We have achieved that and will continue to do so,” said Brenda.

The first trial, held in 2008, drew 160 dogs. “We now regularly have upwards of 220 dogs entering. Each year, we have novices, and new people enter.” For the first few years of the trial, Brenda and her husband Keady supplied the sheep. Sandford Transport donated the cartage from Patea to Hawera. “Sandford’s have continued with their generous support, Brewer Brothers now supply the sheep, and it works well because they are handy to the venue.” she said.

Funds raised through entry fees are presented to St John New Zealand’s ambulance service or the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust each alternate year. This year $3,000 was raised and presented to Hawera St John. The indoor sheepdog trials are held at the TSB Stadium on the Egmont A&P Showgrounds in Hawera. “It’s one way of bringing country to town,” said Graeme.

As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

by Denise Gunn Taranaki Federated Farmers dairy chairperson Janet Schultz was raised on a small dairy farm in Auroa. She now owns a dairy block near Inglewood milking up to 285 cows, balancing farm work with hairdressing at retirement homes, as well as a part-time data technician position at the Stratford sale yards.

anet’s father, Cyril Muggeridge, milked a Jersey herd on the family’s Auroa farm. When a car accident in 1974 claimed his life, Janet’s mother, Ena, sold the farm and moved the family to Hawera. Four years later, when Janet left school, she worked as a dental assistant for several years. However, with a long-standing yearning to train as a hairdresser, Janet took up an adult apprenticeship in the mid-1980s and changed careers. It was a successful career move as Janet represented Taranaki nationally in hairdressing competitions, placing second in the men’s sculptured hairdressing category. “However, the stress and workload of hairdressing was too much, and my husband and I chose to go dairy farming,” said Janet.

“We initially leased a farm, milking 80 cows, while he continued shift work. “I only had my knowledge from my childhood, and he was the product of a sheep and beef farm.” In 2001 Janet and her family were involved in a head-on collision on the open road. “My husband died as a result, and I was left with significant injuries, including a broken femur,” she said. “Thankfully the kids’ injuries were minor.” With two young children and the dairy operation, which had increased to 180 cows, Janet chose to hire workers while rebuilding her life. “I didn’t want to sell up and have my kids lives up-ended like I did.” Janet moved to her 103ha Inglewood farm in 2006. A 36ha run-off is located

two kilometres down the road. Janet’s children, Kelsey and Brody, have retained an interest in the farm, helping with relief milking and farm maintenance. Kelsey’s husband, Matt, is the farm manager and

Ridgetop stud prefix and Jersey cows,” said Janet. “We have been lucky enough to have had bulls purchased by LIC and CRV Ambreed in the past. Ridgetop Mint Celtic and Ridgetop Wynsor Playwrite are currently in CRV’s 2018 Dairy Sire Catalogue.” Three years ago, at the persuasion of Taranaki Federated Farmers regional manager, Craig Sole, Janet became involved with the rural advocacy organisation. “He was intrigued by the farming challenges and felt I had something to contribute to the committee.” She spent one year on the executive committee before becoming the chairperson of the dairy sector. Janet said she enjoys being able to network with like-minded people. “There is satisfaction in being able to help and provide the dairy farming community with much-needed information about rules and regulations coming into effect.” The challenge that comes with dairy farming appeals to Janet too. “I also have a keen eye for stock and love seeing how they will perform for me.” Janet believes this ability was passed on to her by her father. “My daughter Kelsey has inherited it as well, doing well with stock judging in the past. “It has been a huge buzz having bulls selected and graduate from sire proving programmes, as it validates that

technologies. “Unlike phar maceutical dr ugs, naturopathic treatments have no side effects and are safe to use alongside prescription medicines if prescribed by your naturopath,” says Amanda. “I trained as a nurse and was giving out drugs left, right and centre. Each medication had additional medications to counteract side effects. It didn’t make sense to me, but it wasn’t until I experienced this for myself that I realised how shocking it was. Through research, I decided to retrain in natural therapies. “I had an overweight client on blood pressure medication and was sick for the five years involved. She has lost 15 kilos, is feeling incredible, and is transitioning off her meds as she no longer requires them. “The proof is in the pudding with natural therapies. We get people bursting into tears because it is so easy to feel healthy again and they wonder why they haven’t been shown this way before.” The pressure many farmers are under is intense, and their ailments vary including migraines and digestive issues, but the cause is often stress. “We love working with farmers because animal care is their number one priority; however, they often forget about their own needs. “Years ago my friend’s garage was full of supplements including magnesium, iron, and molasses for her horses. She came to me for health advice, and it was clear from her deficiencies that

Amanda and Libby believe wholeheartedly that natural medicine is a positive way to help keep the whole family healthy

she required exactly what she was giving her animals. She hadn’t realised that she also needed nutritional care.” Environmental situations including drought, too much rain, and diseases coming through the farm can cause problems not only to the animals but to their carers. “We offer natural and effective support to look after our humans as well as their animals,” says Amanda. New clients can make an appointment and fill out a health questionnaire on the orangehealth.co.nz website. “Once the completed questionnaire/ health profile is received we start with a phone or video call. The questions help us gather information and see the whole picture of issues that can cause illness and request blood tests if required.”

Treatment often begins with a specifically designed herbal formula to assist the immune and digestive systems and support the side effects of stress both in and on the body. “An old name for natural medicine was folk medicine, based on various plants and their healing qualities. “One doctor wrote that his use of natural medicine came from watching animals. He visited an alpine village where people were strong and robust into their 80s. “After observing their natural lifestyle and remedies, he retrained as a naturopath and herbalist. He learnt not to sleep with windows open on cold

nights because you need to breathe warm air to avoid getting sick. “He watched chickens tuck their beak under their wing to sleep and keep a natural temperature balance — it all makes sense. Hay fever, anxiety, depression, palpitations, insomnia, headaches, mood swings, and fatigue, boils, rashes, aches and joint stiffness can be treated naturally. “We can help with allergies, arthritis, immune disorders, asthma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, bloating and constipation, P M T, menopause, infertility and fibroids,” says Amanda. “Pre-conception and post-natal care, high and low blood pressure, high cholesterol, varicose veins, glue ear, ADHD, and all childhood conditions. “Balancing weight, diabetes and blood sugars, detoxification of the liver and bowel, presence of heavy metals and much more are within our care. “At times the issues you have may be a side effect of something else going on in your system. Natural therapies are a positive way to improve your health and well-being.” Contact Orange Health info@ orangehealth.co.nz or visit the website for more information orangehealth.co.nz

The historical water tower

around road works

HAWERA

by Jill Dickie

By today’s standards, the early days in Hawera would have been a constant stress to firefighters. Everything in town was made of wood — houses, fences, water tanks, even street curbing was built from timber, and outside of every building stood a great pile of firewood prepared for heating homes and cooking meals. The threat of sudden fire was always there.

Back then, there were no fire alarms monitoring households, and no fire extinguishers. There were no large streams or rivers nearby to take water from if and when fire struck, and most of the town’s water was collected from the roofs of houses or shallow-dug wells. In 1888 came the first fire, followed by another in 1895, then again in 1912, each time the town burned, and finally their insurance companies threatened to raise their premium rates if something wasn’t done, and the building of a water tower was proposed. Construction of the 54-metre high water tower, with a water capacity of 681,913 litres, began in December 1912, with the laying of a foundation stone. As the tower grew, scaffolding wrapped around it and a staggering 1,340 tonnes of hand mixed concrete was poured into sturdy wooden formers.

4U

Computer

Just before completion, however, two years later, it was discovered the tower had a slight lean. In what was considered at the time to be a somewhat risky plan, the engineer proposed to undermine the footings, fill the internal two tanks with water, and allow the tower level to settle. The engineer’s report states, ‘the lower side of the tower was anchored with a large block of reinforced concrete, and as the tanks were slowly filled with water, the fault was slowly reduced to about three inches. ‘Where the tower was undermined to move it back into position, heavily reinforced concrete was introduced and the men employed were kept working all night and all the next day to get satisfactory stability established in case of rough weather.’ Today the tower still leans 10cm to the south but calculates at less than 2mm for every vertical metre. It has become an enduring symbol of the town,

and as Hawera people often say, “When you see the Water Tower, you always know you’re home.”

Road trip around the mountain by Jill Dickie

A shopping excursion, or just a day out, a trip to New Plymouth provides plenty of opportunity for shops, cafes and entertainment, but do we really consider the sights we miss along the way? At around an hour to travel up the inland road it’s the obvious choice to run some errands, but sometimes we need a day out away from the usual routine — so how about changing the lunch date to an early dinner, and head up the coast road instead? It’s a little longer, and in places twisty and turny, however, the scenery is stunning, and there are lots of stops you can make along the way. For hikers, there are ample places to stop and head towards the bushline into Egmont National Park, or even indulge in some beach walks. If surfing is your main interest, again there are an abundance of great spots with waves to suit most levels. Heading out of Hawera, you’ll come to the town of Manaia, where the country

music museum is worthy of viewing, and a popular spot for thrillseekers is a detour to the Normanby Dam on the Waingongoro River, where you can kayak down the face of the dam in a rush of whitewater. Further up the road you can learn more about the region with a visit to the Cape Egmont Replica Lighthouse and Museum, or walk the 7km Opunake Walkway ending at Te Namu Pa site, once a fortified Maori village. Oakura is a very popular stop for surfers, particularly for beginners or learners with the gentle waves at Komene Beach. Non-surfers can enjoy a swim, or a walk along the stunning beaches or a wander along the arts trail visiting artists’ studios, jewellers and craft workshops.

Once in the New Plymouth area, spend time surfing the swells at Back Beach or the popular Fitzroy, head to Mt Taranaki for a walk, or check out the museum or art gallery, before an early

dinner and a safe drive back home on the inland road. There is certainly more than meets the eye along this stunning piece of coast, and an abundance of activities to suit everyone.

Calf scheme suspended

ADVERTORIAL

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts

Part 2 Last edition we saw that osteoarthritis (OA) is mostly caused by the loss of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes. Their job is to maintain cartilage. If chondrocytes are damaged or die, they are unable to repair cartilage. The result is that cartilage starts to break down. Eventually, whole patches of cartilage are lost causing a bone-onbone scenario. While cartilage has no nerves, bone certainly does! While bone-onbone causes pain, much of the pain comes from misdirected inflammation. White blood cells that patrol the joint capsule respond to cartilage loss by bringing in extra fluid and a cocktail of inflammatory chemicals in a vain attempt to repair the cartilage. The result is pain, stiffness and in some cases visible swelling. My approach is firstly to adopt a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet. This is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and other foods that reduce inflammation. We then add four compounds from supplements. The first is omega-3 fish oil usually between 4,000 and 6,000mg daily.

We then add high-grade chondroitin sulphate at 800-1,600mg. Chondroitin sulphate (CS) is the most important joint supplement. CS is an actual component of cartilage and adding this helps chondrocytes to work properly. The problem is that most joint supplements only contain around 250mg of CS. In most cases, I start clients on 1,600mg. We then add the same amount of glucosamine and a potent 95% curcumin extract from turmeric. As an example, I have one client with OA in his knees. This was bad enough to significantly impact mobility. After three months on a personalised programme, he is now able to exercise again. His partner had OA in her thumbs and shoulders and is much better. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant. co.nz. Join his full weekly newsletter at abundant.co.nz.

IHC has decided for the first time in 33 years to suspend crucial aspects of its Calf and Rural Scheme due to the very real risk of spreading the Mycoplasma bovis disease. “This includes picking up calves and organising IHC sales, simply because we cannot be part of something that puts farmers’ livelihoods at risk,” says IHC national manager fundraising, Greg Millar. “IHC has had a long and important partnership with farmers, which means together we have been able to make a real difference to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities — particularly those people living in rural communities. “We have spoken to many farmers, including at this year’s Fieldays, many of whom were concerned about the spread of Mycoplasma bovis.” Since the eradication programme was announced by the government, IHC has been in ongoing talks with the Ministry for Primary Industries — and based on information provided they have made some very tough decisions. Over many years, IHC has tightened its practices — only picking up animals with National Animal Identification and Tracing ear tags and Animal Status Declaration forms. “Despite significant improvements in these systems, the risk remains too high,” says Mr Millar. “We have determined there should neither be IHC organised transportation of weaned calves to sales, nor IHC calf sale days. We looked at every possible way to keep the scheme running as is, but after deliberating with MPI, we determined it was too much of a risk. “This is an important decision and one that we have not made lightly — the Calf and Rural Scheme is a longstanding fundraising programme that is now in its 33rd year, and generates more than $1 million annually for people with

intellectual disabilities. We have a real obligation to do what is right for New Zealand farmers, their livelihoods and long-term sustainability. We are keeping up to date with the latest findings, and working to gather the best data possible, to determine how the scheme will operate in the future. “We would also like to acknowledge what a tough time this has been for farmers, and we are making a commitment to those in rural communities around New Zealand who have supported those with intellectual disabilities over the past 33 years. IHC is very grateful for the ongoing support in this difficult year of the key sponsors, in particular, PGG Wrightson who has supported us from the beginning of the calf scheme.” People wanting to continue to support people with intellectual disabilities and take part in the virtual calf scheme can donate $300 in lieu of a calf, by visiting ihc.org.nz/pledge.

John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula with more chondroitin and over double the Curcumin is based on the latest research into joint-support compounds. The normal dose is 2 daily but I recommend a double dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd

Rural Building Shelters for all by Ann van Engelen

Made from pine, cedar, iron, mixed cladding, plastic, heavy duty fabric or speciality wood, a shelter can be traditional or uniquely designed to suit your personality and requirements. Animal shelters, garden and wood sheds, carports, barns and feed storage are just a few scenarios of smaller sized buildings that may be required on your property, whether it be a farm, lifestyle block or family home acreage. There is a range of baby barns that offer more headroom and wall space than traditional baby barns and can be lined or unlined, with a range of colours, size, door and window options. The small buildings are ideal for bunkhouses, animal shelters and hen houses — the uses are limitless, and the designs take up minimal space on any property. For all your shed, shelter, carports, spare room, art studio or office needs, check out designs available from various local companies or discuss the design you may have in mind with them, often producing the product of your requirements is easier than you think. Looking after animals is a priority and ensuring they have good shelter is a must for their health and safety both in cold weather and the heat of summer.

Ensuring chickens, donkeys, goats and other animals have housing is simple, and many are now designed to be easily moved and relocated allowing fresh food and minimal pasture damage. Feed pads shelter groups of animals from wind, rain and sun and keep the feed in good condition and save wastage. Calves need a clean, well-ventilated, well-lit shelter to give them a head-start in life and providing the best possible

environment for raising calves can include sheds or shelters with doors or openings on both ends to provide natural light and gentle air movement, keeping the animals’ environment fresh and clean. It also prevents them from overheating — with even temperatures allowing them to remain more relaxed. Dairy goats benefit from the same type of system.

Rural Building Good homes make good tenants by Jill Dickie

If chickens are happy, warm, and feeling secure they’ll repay with enough eggs from each hen to keep you in cooked breakfasts, pavlovas and baked cakes for months! Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain

and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you. It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators. The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night. If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together, covered with chicken wire and windbreak cloth. Another option, smaller again, is a mobile hen house. Built on skids or

wheels, you can shut the hens in then drag or tow it to a nearby site, allowing them the freedom of fresh grass as they need it. It saves the effort of providing greens each day, gives the soil time to rejuvenate, and the hens can fertilise the ground as well. When a smaller number of chickens are being kept, accommodation is easily achievable with various coops available on the market, or easily build your own with timber and netting, as long as they have a dry and secluded spot for egg laying. Other options, if

you’re not so handy on the tools, is to recycle other items into what you need. A waterproof ute canopy, for example, is just about high enough for the chooks to pop under to shelter from the rain. Gathering some of those plastic drums, securing together, and cutting chickensized doorways in the fronts; converting an unused dog kennel or garden shed; even an unusable plastic water tank with a door for you and a door for them cut into the side! All it takes is a little imagination, and you’ll have eggs-axctly what keeps everyone happy!

Increasing NAIT awareness Manager of compliance investigations, Gary Orr, says MPI and NAIT Ltd have been running joint operations around the country to check compliance with NAIT requirements. “We are pleased to see knowledge of the NAIT scheme has increased in the wake of the Mycoplasma bovis response; however, some farmers are still ignoring their legal obligations,” says Mr Orr. “The Mycoplasma bovis response has highlighted the importance of tracing animal movements and having complete and accurate information available. It is critical all farmers comply with NAIT and track all animal movements on and off their farms. Those that aren’t are putting the rest of the industry in jeopardy.” Mr Orr says MPI and NAIT Ltd are increasing their focus on compliance with NAIT requirements. “Both organisations have significantly stepped up their efforts to detect instances where animal movements have taken place without being recorded in the NAIT database. Since the start of the year, MPI has undertaken around 200 NAIT compliance checks on farms and saleyards where cattle or deer are present.”

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WORK MATES

There’s a classic recipe for a proper hard-working van, and it’s safe to say that relative newcomers to the scene LDV have hit the right combination of power and practicality to impress their target audience. When looking for a van to turn into a working partner, three things stand out — reliability, ease of use and comfort. The LDV G10 Cargo Van neatly ticks those boxes and then adds a bit more to more than justify its very tidy price. Those looking to balance the budget and still recruit a willing workhorse that will last the distance are already paying attention to this new contender. Addressing both performance and stamina, the G10 comes with a choice of two power options, either a two litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 165kw mated to a six-speed auto box or a two-litre naturally aspirated unit with fuel injection. Both deliver fuel economy figures in the mid-11 litres per 100km range, and both have been designed to be easy to service and hard to punish. When it comes to ease of use, LDV have listened to tradies and couriers, who

That means an unimpeded 2.4 x 1.278 x 1.270 metre cargo bay, along with modern luxuries such as reversing cameras to help line up with loading docks and tricky spaces.

Gone is the rattly old ‘church pew’ seating of ancient vans, replaced with a car-like layout and a full multimedia system. That sense of refinement comes through to the ride as well, which is a far cry from the lurching, vague vans of the 1980s.
