Back in 2001, Dargaville identity Bruce Galloway advertised for interest in forming a vintage machinery club. “We had a total of six people to our first meeting, says Bruce. “We now have a membership of around 100 and our club buildings, plant and funds are valued in excess of $2,500,000. Today the club is a jewel in Dargaville’s crown, located high above the town in Harding Park. Home to an extensive new showroom of vintage and veteran machinery restored to pristine condition when first delivered to many Kaipara farms in days gone by. The current club president is Bill Fitness, who is pleased to show visitors through the collection. Outside are workshops where derelict machinery is undergoing extensive makeover work by club members. “Amongst our acquisitions is ‘Rose’ a 1952 NCK excavator, 18 tons with a 50ft boom, once used for pile driving, bridges and buildings. An RB-0 Dragline was used extensively in the Northern Wairoa drain cleaning, building stopbanks and digging water dams, says Bill. There are some 70 to 100 vintage wheel and crawler tractors on display of many shapes, sizes and colours plus farm implements cowshed and dairy equipment, corn shellers, timber and logging machinery, horse and bullock harness. All crowd the club’s display building and members look forward to the possibility of new patronage as Kiwis look to holiday at home in the post-Covid foreseeable future. Further along on our tour, there’s a fully operational 110-year-old woolshed shifted on-site and restored to full operation, driven by an antique Lister three horsepower petrol engine. Bruce Galloway tells the story of the club in his recent book, The Flying Farmer, launched last month. Today’s site was an eight-acre scrub and pine tree block back in 2001. “Firstly, the trees were harvested free of charge by Leo Glamuzina Logging. The proceeds for the logs went into the club funds. All the stumps and rubbish were

dug out. Some were transported off-site. Most were burnt. The big fires we had sure lit up the night sky. It has taken many years to complete the project, and now this display complex has turned into a great community asset and tourist facility. Adds president Bill: “Our club is open every Wednesday and Saturday; also any day when we’re asked because any excuse to open up and show off our treasures is welcome. Bruce Galloway’s new book, The Flying Farmer, is available at The Lifestyler at $50, plus relevant postage — phone 09 439 6933.

Calves for Hospice scheme takes off by Denise Gunn

Hospice Taranaki’s Calves for Hospice fundraising scheme has seen an upsurge in assistance during the past year.

“We also have Malcolm Campbell Livestock, who has come on board this year, and will donate his commission and hand out calf tags to those who require them.” Allflex has donated ear tags free of charge this year. Mrs Poole said this would be a great help as the calves will be easily identified as Calves for Hospice Taranaki and the money will be paid directly. Last year $12,000 was raised; up $3,000 from the previous year. “We are hoping to increase the amount raised again this year, and so far the support is looking very promising. Due to Covid-19 forcing our hospice

shops to close over level four, our fundraising efforts are needed more than ever to keep the hospice running.” The scheme welcomes more people to help, particularly in north Taranaki, to contact farmers along their roads or districts. “Farmers are very generous, and we are so appreciative that they are supportive of this scheme. Everyone who is involved is volunteering their services for this very worthy cause.” All of the funds donated through the scheme go directly to Hospice Taranaki.

Since a feature on the scheme ran in Taranaki Farming Lifestyles in April 2019, along with the concern of Mycoplasma bovis easing, more farmers have come on board to help with donations of calves, rearing calves for sale then donating the funds, or raising a virtual calf. Calves for Hospice Taranaki spokesperson Clare Poole said quite a few enquiries were made by farmers about the scheme after reading the feature. Many farmers, who were personally contacted via either phone calls or visits, had read the feature and were happy to support the project too. “We have also had a few farmers who have reared their bull calves for us and then sold them as a weaned calf and donated money to Hospice Taranaki,” said Mrs Poole. “A number of farmers sell their bull beef calves privately to calf rearers but still wanted to support the scheme, so have donated a virtual calf instead.” Mrs Poole said around 40 four-dayold calves from all over Taranaki were donated to the scheme last year. A larger number of volunteers doing the groundwork in the rural community around the region is helping the scheme to grow. Stock agents from NZ Farmers Livestock, Carrfields and PGG Wrightson have assisted again this year too.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

Award-winners link to family herd by Denise Gunn Balancing one-year-old twin boys with farming has added a different challenge for the 2020 Taranaki Share Farmers of the Year.

S

imon and Natasha Wilkes are 50/50 herd-owning sharemilkers on Natasha’s parents 84ha effective farm near Hawera. Natasha grew up on the dairy farm the couple is now sharemilking on and began milking at the age of 12. Rotorua is Simon’s hometown. The pair met at Otago University 11 years ago where Simon was studying firstyear health science, working towards a physiotherapy degree and Natasha was pursuing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in human nutrition. She followed this up with a Masters in Dietetics. During the university holidays, Simon worked on Natasha’s family farm, developing a passion for farming and making the decision to pursue a career in the

industry. Natasha worked towards her masters in Otago, and a subsequent placement was to the Manawatu, working as a food services manager and clinician dietician for Mid Central Health. While the couple lived in Palmerston North, Simon began studying towards a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) at Massey University. Natasha said this placement meant travelling the length of the country. “Thankfully, dairy farming is all over New Zealand, and Simon could experience different farming systems and climates, in South Otago and coastal Manawatu.” Simon set out in the dairy industry as a farm assistant on the Hawera farm, followed by various positions in

Taranaki, Otago, the Manawatu before returning to the family farm. Natasha’s parents, Morris and Debbie Bourke’s (Merton Family Trust) farm, operates on a DairyNZ System 3, milking the Wilkes’s 320 Jersey cows through a 30-aside herringbone shed. Production figures for this past season were 114,000kgMS, with anticipated figures for next season at 110,00kgMS due to summer dry. Natasha said their 320-cow Jersey herd is really special to them, a major strength and an asset to their business. “It’s a fourth-generation pure Jersey herd, and it means a lot to be keeping the cows in the family. Our herd BW (196) and PW (207) places in the top one per cent in New Zealand and we have contract cows with LIC and previous bulls in the premier sire team. With our herd being our biggest asset, we are looking forward to using this to create further value to our business over the coming years. “One of our initial livestock goals was to compact our calving spread by shortening our mating period over the next five years. Our first season we reduced our mating by two weeks to 11 weeks, and we will continue to compact our calving spread by a week each year until mating is seven weeks AI for the 2022/23 season.” The farm receives an annual rainfall of 1,050mm is summer dry with strong, southwesterly winds. With limited grass growth in summer, chicory is

fed along with maize and grass silage to fill pasture deficits. Hay is fed out throughout winter. Natasha said grass silage is grown in surplus months and chicory for summer crops. “Maize, hay and additional grass silage is grown at a support block and trucked home.” The couple hit the ground running when they returned to the family farm in 2018. Their twin boys, John and Dean, arrived soon afterwards. The Dairy Industry Awards were their first opportunity to look back and scrutinise all aspects of their farming business. “Being new to the area, it has been great to meet new people and network with farmers and agri-professionals. We see these relationships as vital for our business growth, and develop in the future.” Drawing on their strengths and skills, the couple complements each other well. Simon is in charge of the day-today routine, taking care of pastures, fertilisers, livestock, staff and dairy shed operations. Natasha’s previous job experience supplements this as she manages the administrative aspects, staff recruitment and rostering. “We love that it is an ever-evolving industry, science-based and the support that’s out there from rural professionals through to other farmers wanting to help each other. It is a unique industry where each business is different, and

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!

there are so many ways to farm. We all have something that we can offer to help others in the industry, and that’s what

we are passionate about doing in the future.” The couple aims to achieve farm ownership by 2030.

ROLE HELPS

achieve goals BY DENISE GUNN

DairyNZ consulting officer Charlotte Grayling always knew she wanted an agricultural career, working with people to help them achieve their goals.

C

harlotte took on this role earlier this year after several years working as a rural bank manager for ASB. “I thought it was the perfect opportunity to combine my financial knowledge and banking experience, as well as broaden my practical farm knowledge to hopefully help more people with their businesses,” said Charlotte. “The thing I love most about this role is every day is different, and every farm is different, so there is plenty of opportunity to learn and develop.” Charlotte’s parents, Matthew and Susan, are second-generation dairy farmers on a 246ha property in Okato. The home farm is one large unit but

runs as two farms together through two sheds. Matthew works full-time on the farm, along with two other full-time staff members and relief milkers, while Susan rears calves and relief milks. A couple of days each week, Susan also works as a nurse in New Plymouth. The farm, with a 205ha effective milking platform, milks close to 620 cows split into two herds — Friesian and Jersey. “I have three siblings, so growing up, we were all involved in the farm, from milking to general jobs like spraying and feeding calves during the spring. We all went to boarding school, so it was limited to school holidays when we were a bit older.” When Charlotte completed secondary school, she went

The couple run a mixture of dairy and beef cattle, and lambs on their lease block to Massey University to work towards an agri-commerce degree. After a couple of days’ work experience with rural bankers, Charlotte decided that was the direction she wanted to head. “The alternative was actually rural valuation, which I minored in, and also really enjoy.” On completing her degree, Charlotte enrolled in the ASB graduate

programme and initially based in the Manawatu with the rural team. Within six months, she was transferred to Taranaki and stayed with ASB for close to five years. In January, she took up her DairyNZ consulting position, covering central Manawatu and Rangitikei. “DairyNZ is an industry-good body, representing all

Evenings and weekends are spent catching up with farm work New Zealand dairy farmers. Its purpose is to improve profitability, sustainability and competitiveness of New Zealand dairy farming.” In her role, Charlotte shares industry information with farmers, as well as facilitating and providing support for best management practice on-farm. She said a large component of the role is running the discussion group process, and facilitating farmer-tofarmer learning. “However, there is also a part of the role where we work with individuals to solve problems or help connect farmers

in order to help spread knowledge throughout the industry.” Charlotte and her fiancé Tom Grogan recently began leasing a 158ha block at Aokautere. The block previously belonged to her grandfather, Keith Bennett, who passed away last year. “We both really wanted to be farming but understood our own challenges we had getting into land ownership. Therefore, we saw leasing as a great opportunity to develop our own farm skills, make a few mistakes, but also build capital stock and get a better return from our money than sitting in

professional singer, Teresa has evolved her horse training approach for individual situations. Michaela is nationally recognised in dressage. The couple is good friends with the Topp Twins, Jools and Lynda. “I have sat in with the Topp Twins and played with them at the rugby world cup and festivals. I have had a lot of impromptu concerts, but I am known more as a horse trainer here,” says Teresa. “I am a problem solver and help people with their horses, or horses who

are having problems with their people — which is often the case. “It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork and communication, which is not natural to people. Once they learn how to communicate through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. “When you learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. I show how to change the demeanour quickly and teach the horse to yield their feet to the person. It is a spatial thing, like a flight zone, a bubble

of air — it is not natural to people, and often a person doesn’t understand that a horse is trying to check that out with them. “The horse may step on their foot to move the person, and the person gets grumpy. The horse gets confused and then doesn’t know who should move first. It is communication, and the animal needs to feel safe and secure, and that scales up in the riding as well. “I teach about feeding horses properly because I had to learn how to feed my horse here. In the States, it is a more natural environment. Horses can get illnesses like laminitis, gut issues, and spores because they are not ruminants. You need to figure out ways to feed them like creating track systems where there is not much fodder. Let them out to graze for short periods and don’t let them have the richer grasses. “When you start feeling like you are having issues then it is good to call me. Large animals can be frightening — it’s not like a dog jumping up on you. They are big, powerful and complex creatures. “Some are ridden often, so they are more broke than others. Owners may be busy working and lucky to get six hours a week to ride, leaving the horses in the paddock. They want to get out and work so you have to hook it to be mentally with you, then they are your friend and will come to you at the gate. There are a lot of simple but complex things, and we have developed techniques that have mimicked a horse’s behaviour. “I love working out solutions for people and their horses and teach them how to read their horse. I have a lot

of tips on halter breaking a youngster and have passed the torch of starting horses to a younger woman, Taryn Kyd of Vaquero Views. We have worked together for nine years, and in Auckland, I work in her large facility. In Hawke’s Bay, I offer a variety of services and can help start a horse and work with started horses. “I have many stories of people not understanding their horse and becoming exceptional when guided in the right direction. I work with anyone who is keen to know more — they don’t need to be into competing or have a fancy animal. I am happy to deal with a donkey. It is not about competition with me, it is about individual relationships with horses, and all that requires is a desire — happy horse, happy person. “I believe you never retire — you work and retire at the same time. Part of the reason I left the music business is horses are my first passion and something I can do as I get older. It keeps me young and happy, and I love helping. It gives you purpose as animals are so important to their owners. When people worry about their animal, they get stressed. I am pleased to be in New Zealand and thank my lucky stars that I can live and work horses. “Follow my Facebook pages or website, NZ Horse Help or NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay. I am very accessible, approachable and clear with instructions when helping people understand their animals.” Follow Teresa on her website or Facebook pages NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay and NZ Horse Help.

Life was no doubt simpler back in the day when wood was the way, tanalised Pinus radiata for preference over native tree solutions in grandpa’s day. Now technology means a rest for nature and new building materials for homes and buildings tend to be more eco-friendly and cost-effective, but wood still has a place — only it’s been tweaked a bit. Laminated timber is prefabricated wood, and it can also support high-rise buildings as well as humble homes. There’s also a quantum leap forward in a glass substitute, a ceramic alloy that is almost twice as strong as the jewel known as sapphire and can’t corrode. It is used to make stronger windows for homes, apart from uses in aviation and undersea exploration. The cost of electricity never goes down, and many new builds in New Zealand today are using solar panels. However, huge solar arrays are not really needed when you can use new unseen solar cells that produce power in building materials for doors and windows. Another innovation is 100 per cent recyclable aluminium foam, produced

when air is infused with molten metal to produce a strong and lightweight cladding material. However, wood is still alive — this time as ‘translucent wood.’ It provides high insulation properties, and it is biodegradable. You can use the wood in solar panels, on windows as replacements for glass because the treated wood is 90 per cent transparent. Moreover, alongside these modern innovations, there are building materials that have stood the test of time and are also environmentally desirable. Wool bricks are a mix of wool and

seaweed, and they do not need firing like traditional bricks. Earthen materials like adobe bricks and rammed earth have been used for construction since the beginning of time. Rammed earth instead of concrete is a sort of man-made rock that’s formed by compressing earth, gravel, whatever is to hand. Baled straw has great insulating properties, and its materials make a wall almost completely soundproof. Rural Building/sheds & shelters Not just a man cave by Paul Campbell

A man’s shed is his man cave, some say, but a shed can be a boon for any family. It’s in effect another useful room on the house, with a strong storage function as well as a workplace for the handyman. On rural properties, of course, the farm shed caters for a multitude of jobs. Locally owned and operated We cover all of Taranaki Made in New Zealand

A well planned out shed means it’ll cater for all the jobs you have planned

inspector will establish how far your site is from property lines, streets, driveway and sidewalks, houses, septic tanks and leach fields, et cetera. If you plan to go down the DIY road, you’ll need to have the right tools. With building supply outlets around the country, there’s no problem with selection. Many of these outlets have knowledgeable staff only too happy to advise on equipment and materials. Once you are geared up to go, the most

important factor to be decided is the foundations of the new enterprise. Most sheds can be supported by concrete blocks or treated wooden pilings, but pouring a concrete pad foundation makes for a commitment to permanence. If, of course, the DIY approach doesn’t appeal, remember that a prefabricated choice will still need something to sit on before it arrives on-site.

Like everything else in the building code world, size will be important as it will dictate what permits may be required from the local council. In many cases in New Zealand, a shed becomes a home build project, while there are quite a number of kitset and ready-built options on the market. Once the design is decided upon, permits applied for and in the case of an extensive rural facility, probably a building contractor lined up — a shed site needs selection, again in a rural context there will be several choices. It would seem simple enough, but a lack of forethought can prove one’s undoing. Don’t build in a low-lying area where water collects and access becomes a wet weather worry. If the shed is wanted for regular activities, woodwork, maintenance and the like, look at the light available. Tucked under a tree might seem a good idea until the sun seems a stranger. A bright and airy outlook is to be desired. Most importantly, a building

THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING LOCAL

Be it town or country, consent to build is a regulatory requirement for any new structure and while it can be a bit of a chore, it is simply permission to build a structure with the assurance that it complies with the rules. It is the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA) that certain works meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Some minor work is exempt under the act, but consent is required for most work including such additional things as swimming pools, spa pools and fencing, some retaining walls, decks, non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres as well as renovations to existing structures in certain cases. Your one-stop shop is your local council. If you are engaging a contractor, the red tape involved will usually be handled as part of your deal. However, there may be unexpected rural consent provisions to consider too. You or your builder can apply online, or you will need application forms that can

be obtained from council’s websites, or council office and consents are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. All building work should be completed within two years from the date that the building consent was granted. In the case of rural builds, a house must be 25m from any boundary in the rural general zone and 10m from a boundary in the rural residential zone (10m from a road boundary) as well as more than 50m from any existing or consented dwelling on an adjoining property. Your house must not breach the skyline when viewed from a public place

within two kilometres. If part of a recent subdivision, it is possible your title may be subject to a consent notice that you have to build on an identified ‘building platform’. However, it is still possible to apply for consent to build outside the designated platform. Councils, in fact, have some control over colour and types of cladding listed in their district plans. Cladding that will be frowned upon is usually something akin to unpainted corrugated iron. You or your agent then will need to supply a site and floor plan and concept elevations of your proposed house.

The key message from TAML Forestry to existing forest owners or those farmers considering establishing forests to offset potential future carbon liabilities is consultation, and forward planning, to ensure best value outcomes. A large percentage of Taranaki forest estate is privately owned on farms, planted in the mid-nineties and which is now maturing collectively during the next five years. That will place increasing pressure on an already stretched local harvesting infrastructure. TAML encourages all forest owners large and small to plan well ahead to ensure maximum outcomes are achieved. For the last five years, TAML Forestry has established key harvesting

infrastructure, complemented with strong domestic and export log customers, to deliver forest owner clients with maximum harvest returns. It has also continued to develop its silviculture team to deal with pruning and thinning. TAML prides itself on being local, offering clients experience across all aspects of Taranaki forestry from establishment through to harvest. Kelly believes many forest owners do not know the value or potential of their forest assets, as there appears to be possible a mistrust, or lack of understanding of forestry value in general. The company officers are ready for a personal conversation anytime.

Breaking sound barrier at park Three massive sound mirrors, installed recently at King Edward Park, are likely to be the largest in New Zealand. Donated by local business, Global Stainless, the sound mirrors stand more than two metres in height, facing each other across a distance of 50 metres. A person can whisper into the focal point of one dish while another person can hear the whisper at the focal point of the other dish. “We are very grateful to Global Stainless Artworks for donating these wonderful pieces, and to the funders who made installation possible,” said South Taranaki mayor Phil Nixon. “They will be a fascinating addition to our award-winning park. They are a little bit of art, a little bit of fun and a whole lot of science combined.” Global Stainless Artworks Hawera, fabricators of high-end stainless steel balls, spheres and sculptures has worked with the South Taranaki District Council to provide the structures for the district. There’s great value in waste Return 2 Earth is an organic waste solutions company based at Egmont Road New Plymouth, started in 2008 and focussed on producing and supplying in bulk, high-quality compost, garden mulches and wood chips. Compost is sourced from Palmerston North and supplied to local vegetable growers, home gardeners and New Plymouth District Council. Excess mulch produced by arborist companies in the New Plymouth area is delivered to a Return 2 Earth facility where it is aged and mixed to produce a consistent quality standard garden mulch, some of which is reprocessed to make a finer more even-sized product. The Taranaki Regional Council is a regular customer buying compost and mulches for their regional gardens. Excess and broken pallets, end of life cable drums and untreated timber is delivered free of charge to Return 2 Earth to be repurposed and processed into wood chips primarily for animal bedding (calf sheds, herd homes and horse stables). When these sheds are cleaned out, the resulting product is a good medium for organic fertiliser. In summary, all of the above processes result in a high level of environmental responsibility because products considered as waste to many people are reclaimed, recycled and reused, backing up one of Return 2 Earth’s philosophies “2good2waste”.

Chopper rescue club by Ann van Engelen

Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot and sculpture artist Sue Dinkelacker has established a club for people who have used or been rescued by the emergency services helicopters. “The Haast Club is a way to signify the importance of the choppers missions and its patients. It is endorsed by the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, Northland Emergency Services Trust and the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust,” says Northland Rescue Helicopter general manager, Vanessa Furze. “Sue has worked in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services in New Zealand for more than seven years. She is currently a captain flying the Northland Emergency Services Trust’s Sikorsky S76C++ helicopters in Whangarei.” Sue, an artist and award-winning sculptor, created the eagle head sculptures for people that have used the emergency helicopter services as a memento that can also be used as a conversation piece.

“The Haast Club membership is a way to commemorate a personal rescue. The purpose of the club is to offer a tangible ‘legacy-quality’ collectible to remind you of your experience, and create a talking point to share your story while raising funds for New Zealand Rescue Helicopter Trusts,” says Sue. “Many different types of helicopters have saved people over the last halfa-century. “A helicopter-shaped artwork would be recognised as a specific chopper, whereas an eagle symbolises them all. Inspired by the eagle that snatched Gandalf to safety in the Tolkien stories, the Haast Club artworks depict the largest eagle ever to have existed in the world, the extinct New Zealand Haast’s eagle.”

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

The club is designed for anyone, anywhere in New Zealand and across the world. Northland resident and Far North District Councillor Kaikohe-Hokianga Ward, John Vujchich, was rescued by the emergency services helicopter in 2013 after his foot was chopped off in a farming accident on his family property in the Far North. Mr Vujchich was also the first person to join the exclusive club. “When I heard about the club I joined immediately. It is thanks to their speed that got me to Whangarei Hospital and into surgery that I survived. It was technically impossible for me to survive with what actually happened because losing a foot like that you should bleed out within five minutes,” he says. “What has always stuck in my head was I could hear the rescue chopper coming in, and I could see it land. I have a new appreciation for the service and those on the team. When I see the chopper in the air, I wonder who is hurt, where are they from and how badly. I encourage anyone who has been

Abundant Health CoQsol®

An essential to make energy

Superior absorption CoQ10

by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we usually make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good-quality CoQ10. Part one CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. It can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation. Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also

needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50 per cent. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well-researched and patented US product CoQsol.
