TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
Rural sector still relies on print media
Integrity community media
by Andy Bryenton
In a digital age, print media still stands tall for the decision makers of rural New Zealand. That’s the finding of a major survey undertaken recently by four of the major publishers who serve the farming community — and it’s one, which proves that good old-fashioned ink on paper is more than just ‘still relevant’ — it’s a force for change in the Kiwi heartland.
The Taranaki Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by Integrity Community Media, a privately owned NZ company. In fact, the survey shows that a whopping 88% of Kiwi farmers read a specialist rural paper weekly. 82% put what they read into practice, ranking rural print media as one of the top three factors in their decision-making. Fully one-third admit that rural publications alone has convinced them to make a purchase for the farm. It seems that these purchases aren’t small, either — the breadth of coverage and the ability to lay out a complete detailed review mean that tractors, vehicles, vet products and agrichemicals top the list of items bought — thanks to the influence of the press. The Rural Media Habits Survey 2018 focuses in on those who manage either large areas of land or substantial numbers of livestock. It drills down to the media access preferences of those at the forefront of agriculture. While the answers unsurprisingly acknowledge the influence of the internet as a communications tool, the importance of print media is thrown into stark focus. Like the ebook, which has resolutely failed to supplant the old-fashioned paperback, the internet is revealed as a preferred tool for quick communication — 80% of respondents picked ‘email’
as their number one digital task, followed by online banking. Third place, went to doing further research into things they’d seen in rural newspapers and magazines. Another key factor in the survey is good news for businesses wishing to reach out to the rural sector. There’s a very clear answer given, here, to the vexing question of quantifying the impact of marketing to our nation’s farmers. When asked how likely they were to pay attention to advertising each week across different media streams, the greatest number agreed that they were likely to read advertising material in rural magazines and newspapers. The area where ads were unlikely to be payed attention to were on the internet and television. It has been tempting in recent years to give credence to rumours that the world of media is going entirely digital. This survey proves otherwise in clear and simple terms. Because out there in rural New Zealand, it seems that the real news is still delivered on paper, and still carries a hefty amount of decisioninfluencing information, appreciated by an audience with their minds on business.

Mycoplasma bovis roadshows drew large crowds
TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
June 2018
by Denise Gunn
More than 1,000 people attended a recent series of Mycoplasma bovis information roadshows held throughout Taranaki. Taranaki Federated Farmers president, Donald McIntyre, said farmers are concerned and looking for information. Although the disease hasn’t been officially detected in Taranaki, there are several properties identified with a forward trace. A forward trace involves cattle movement from a suspect farm to another property. McIntyre says 12 to 14 forward movements have been identified in the region. “The farmers involved have been notified and are adapting their farming practices accordingly. It’s all movement related.” Mr McIntyre said it’s a low risk at this stage. Representatives from Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ, Rural Support Trust and local veterinarians presented information at the roadshows and were on-hand to answer questions. Mycoplasma bovis is a commonly found bacterial disease found in cattle worldwide, spread through the saliva and mucous after close contact between cows. It can spread between farms through the movement of livestock that are infected but not showing any symptoms. It is also possibly spread through contaminated equipment and feeding

untreated milk to calves. Symptoms in cows include abortions, untreatable mastitis, and swollen, painful joints. Calves suffer joint inflammation, ear infections, pneumonia and conjunctivitis. Mr McIntyre said the test for Mycoplasma bovis is not 100% accurate. “The disease can hide in the immune system of an animal.” He said it was important for farmers to comply with NAIT requirements. Agriculture and Biosecurity minister, Damien O’Connor, said following the government’s announcement in May that it will continue to attempt to eradicate Mycoplasma bovis from New Zealand, the programme is making good progress. “We have seen the benefit of certainty. At the meetings I attend around the country, an overwhelming majority of farmers Taranaki Federated Farmers president, Donald McIntyre support the eradication objective The Ministry for Primary Industries while accepting it’s a big challenge.” will be holding a meeting in Hawera on “I acknowledge we have a long Thursday, June 28. way to go and thank everyone for contributing to a significant step forward in our Mycoplasma bovis eradication programme,” he said.

Unlike the dairy industry, which exports nearly all it produces, for forestry, we use a lot in New Zealand. Most of our homes are made from wood. The billion trees which the government wants to see planted over the next ten years – plus genetic and technology gains – will see an even greater role for forestry in our economy for decades into the future. Relief milking down the road from the family’s lifestyle block was James Holgate’s first taste of working in the dairy industry. It was also where he landed his first job. Now, several years later, James is the 2018 Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year.
I
t wasn’t until his teenage years that James became interested in the dairy industry. A Gateway dairy farming programme during high school gave him practical experience and insight into the industry. As an 18-year-old, James began work as a farm assistant for Robin and Roslyn Bosson on their Cardiff farm. Almost three years later, James took up employment on Graeme and Bev Prankerd’s farm at Ngaere. James was the Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year runner-up in 2014. Now in his second season on Tony and Lorraine Lash’s farm near Midhurst, the 26-year-old started as 2IC and is currently herd manager. James said being raised in Stratford and moving
with his family to a lifestyle block when he was ten years old, meant he had to learn basic farming skills from scratch. “I took my time progressing in the industry to give myself a solid base of skills.” He found good communication, and learning with constructive feedback, has been helpful to gaining confidence in backing his own decisions. “Coming from a town background has presented some challenges; however, I really enjoy farming,” said James. “I’m always learning and no day is the same. “I enjoy the lifestyle and industry.” James has continued studying through Primary ITO, completing several level three and four certificates, modern

apprenticeship, and now working on level five production management. The Lash’s 130ha effective farm, with a 28ha runoff, milks 350 Jerseycross cows. “We have a target of 140,000kgMS given a tough season,” said James. Winter in the region is generally wet and cold, with summers dry and fairly mild. “The average rainfall for our area is around 2,000mls, which we had in January to August last year alone. “We try to be proactive about our decisions with the weather to minimise any problems that can arise.” The 900mls of rainfall in July and August last year caused a few problems. James said there was poor utilisation of feed during this time. “We had to buy in more feed, and we grazed some late calving cows off-farm. “We’ve faced some extreme weather affected seasons and are learning to adapt to these as we go.” Silage, maize and hay are grown on-farm. James believes the strengths of the business lies in a well-developed farm. “This allows more time to focus on stock and pasture rather than repairs and maintenance.” “We also have a strong well-bred herd with better replacements and improved genetics.” When announced as a winner at the Taranaki Dairy Industry Awards, James said he felt proud of how far he had come in his career, and of the farm. “I’m thankful for the support and help I got, and the people I met. “It was a great feeling to get rewarded for my effort and passion.” Next year James and his partner Tracy Kivell will be contract milkers on the same farm.
June 2018
James is currently herd manager on Tony and Lorraine Lash’s farm near Midhurst “My partner Tracy is an important part of my progress, and we make a great team, looking forward to progressing further together.” “We plan to be successful in our first year contract milking, meet and beat the production target, and have an empty rate of less than 10%,” said James. The couple aims to be 50:50 sharemilkers within five years, with farm ownership as the big goal.

PREPARING FOR GRAND FINAL by Denise Gunn Following his win in the Taranaki/Manawatu FMG Young Farmer of the Year, Will Taylor is putting in the hard yards during the lead-up to the national grand final.
T
he Marton Young Farmers vicechairman grew up on a finishing farm near Feilding, providing him with a foundation of skills and knowledge. His father’s agricultural contracting business also gave Will additional experience in this area. “My upbringing helped me develop my passion for agriculture and knowing that I wanted to make it my career,” said Will. When Will finished high school, he spent three years driving tractors and combine harvesters on large-scale arable properties in Western Australia. “After returning home, I expanded my
experience, spending two-and-a-half years in Turakina on a cropping and beef fattening farm.” Will then branched out again, gaining sales experience for John Deere in the wider Manawatu region for three years. In August 2017, Will began his current position as a technical field representative for PGG Wrightson in Feilding. His responsibilities involve spending a lot of time on clients’ farms, helping to optimise farm performance. He said a large advantage to his role is looking at the farm system as a whole. Will is currently running breeding ewes and finishing lambs on his property

“This means while the majority of my time is spent in the cropping and agronomy space, I also do a small amount of animal health-related activities and recommendations. “My role appeals to me as I love learning about the agricultural industry, so when I encounter something new, I am always keen to go find answers and learn more. “I also enjoy spending time working alongside clients, helping them with their day-to-day operations such as drenching, dagging, calf marking and fencing.” Will joined Marton Young Farmers a couple of years ago. “I enjoy being able to make new friends with similar interests that have introduced me to new ideas and perspectives.” This year was the second time Will competed in a regional Young Farmers competition final. The 26-year-old said it was a massive learning curve and made him realise how broad the industry is and how diverse the competition can be. “It made me really motivated to come back this year and do my best.” The event saw eight finalists from across the region tackle a series of gruelling modules, including a fastpaced agri-knowledge quiz. As part of his preparation for the national grand final, Will plans to spend more time gaining as much experience as possible in a variety of farming systems. “I will also be studying up to improve my technical knowledge of all things farm-related.” In his spare time, Will competes in small-bore target shooting at a high level. “I found this to be extremely challenging for mental capacity and state of mind, which is why I enjoy it so much.” A couple of years ago Will bought a bare block of land in Feilding. With the help of family and friends, he has fenced, built

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
NEW LEASE OF LIFE by Denise Gunn
When a 12-year-old heading dog named Tod arrived at Tararua Vets in Pahiatua for his final visit, he gave vet nurse Natalie Smith a look like he wasn’t ready to go. Natalie called his owners and arranged a retirement home for Tod. Six years later, Natalie has rehomed retired working dogs all over the country through Retired Working Dogs (RWD) NZ.
“W
e help farmers find retirement homes for their dogs after all those years of hard work,” said Natalie. “We also rehome the young ‘failed’ dogs; those who are a bit soft for the job, and we get quite a few working breed pet dogs through as well.” Farmers contact RWD through the organisation’s Facebook page facebook. com/Retired.WorkingDogs or website retiredworkingdogs.org.nz. The dogs that can stay on-farm until they have found a new home are then advertised on behalf of the farmers. Natalie says it’s then up to the farmer to decide where the dog will go.
“Sometimes we have dogs that need to be off-farm for whatever reason, and so we take them into foster care.” The dogs are desexed, vaccinated and socialised before advertising begins. Dogs are also often referred to RWD through veterinary clinics. These dogs tend to have sustained careerending injuries. “We take these dogs into foster and have the surgeries done, and then rehome them.” Pounds, the SPCA and other rescue agencies refer dogs too. “People also contact us looking for dogs, so we advertise for them as well.” Dogs have been taken in from Northland to Otago. Phil Cox and his wife Karen foster dogs on their Wairarapa property to give them a second chance when they come off a farm

All potential new owners are met and their properties inspected. Dogs go out on trial and if it doesn’t work out, they are returned to RWD. A team of fosterers, located from Martinborough to Ohakune, play a critical role behind the scenes to help the dogs. “Fosterers are so important,” said Natalie. “They take the dogs in and teach them how to be pets. As most of the dogs have never been inside previously, they need to learn about cats, children and sleeping inside. The fosterers take the dogs to vet appointments and to meet prospective, new owners. Natalie said one of the fosterers is a sheep and beef farmer. “This is brilliant because when we get dogs from the pound, they go up there so we can learn whether they want to go to a working home or a pet home.” Philip Cox has been fostering working dogs for the past six years. He and his wife Karen live in rural Wairarapa, surrounded by farmland, river and hills. Philip said they foster dogs to give them a second chance after coming off the farm. When a dog arrives on the property, the couple tries to establish a routine around sleeping and feeding. “It’s important that it has a safe space and it isn’t threatened. Once you see their confidence increase, you can move forward with walks and socialising.” Philip says involvement with RWD has taught them much about dogs and people. “When you see the way some dogs have been treated, your heart goes out
to them, and it’s so important to give them a safe place.” Manawatu-based Vicki Lim has had a soft spot for working dogs after meeting them in her capacity as a veterinary student. She has since fostered eight dogs. “They’re intelligent and affectionate and are able to match your lifestyle really well,” she said. “They tend to be very well-behaved and willing to please, which makes them really trainable. “We’re extremely proud to be able to give these awesome dogs a loving home after years of hard work. “Doing this, we prevent the dogs from getting put down, and allow people to have some amazing companions for the rest of their days.” Natalie also fosters dogs and helps coordinate the foster network, assists with decision-making, and does some administration work for RWD. “There’s a whole team of people working behind the scenes on the day-today running and fundraising,” she said. “There’s a lot of transport involved too. Either we transport them, or they’re collected. Sometimes we’ll put a post up if it’s a long way and there are fantastic people out there who will offer to deliver dogs on their way somewhere.” Natalie works as a farm rep for Royal Canin, travelling all over the North Island allowing her to pick up and drop off dogs on her travels. “They’ve been brilliant and are our primary food sponsor. All our foster dogs are fed by Royal Canin, which is incredible.”
June 2018

Totally Vets in Feilding, Tararua Vets in Pahiatua, Bayer Animal Health and Avalon Marketing and Website Design are also supporters of RWD. “This wouldn’t be possible without their awesome support, and the fantastic people in the community who take in these dogs and give them the retirement they deserve,” said Natalie. “And of course, the incredible team behind the scenes who help save lives every day.”
Natalie said RWD has almost been finalised as a charitable trust and there are several fundraising plans in the pipeline, including a public dog walk. “We are always looking for new foster homes in the lower North Island if anyone is interested.” RWD would also like to have a centralised location for foster dogs to go. “One day we hope to have a base so we can take more of them into care.”

Improving biosecurity top priority What causes osteoarthritis? ADVERTORIAL
The KPMG Agribusiness Agenda report reveals having a world-class biosecurity system is a top priority for the leaders surveyed.

“Biosecurity risks can threaten our economy and way of life. This government understands that if we are to keep pace with the increasing levels of goods and people across our borders, we need to step up our efforts in biosecurity,” says Minister for Agriculture and Biosecurity, Damien O’Connor. “A pleasing result from the survey was a recognition from industry that biosecurity is everyone’s job and that everyone has a role to play in dealing with the risk. “The strong partnership formed between industry and government in the fight against Mycoplasma bovis has demonstrated that we can come together effectively when needed.” Mr O’Connor says there is still plenty of work to do to improve our ability to respond effectively to major incursions. “High on the list is improving compliance with the National Animal Identification and Tracing system, as we have seen throughout the Mycoplasma bovis response. Not enough farmers
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain. All chronic disease starts with damage to certain cell types that then damages tissue which causes the symptoms we feel. The real driver behind cartilage loss is the health of specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells secrete and repair cartilage matrix. Anything that affects chondrocyte cells could cause cartilage damage. Mechanical force (injury) can trigger an increase in free radicals, which can cause the death of chondrocytes. In some cases, it is as much about a failure of cell antioxidants defences. The problem is that chondrocytes cannot replicate. Once a chondrocyte dies, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will eventually disintegrate. The body tries to fix the problem through the process of inflammation, which is ineffective — it ends up making the problem worse. In my experience, the inflammatory part of OA causes more pain and discomfort than the actual cartilage loss. Just a note that commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication can
have been complying with NAIT, and there is a growing understanding throughout the sector that this needs to change. This year I have accelerated a yearlate report into the effectiveness of NAIT and have instructed my officials to make the appropriate improvements, including making it easier to use. “To give biosecurity the attention it deserves, I have reorganised the Ministry for Primary Industries, to create Biosecurity New Zealand, a stand-alone unit whose sole focus is biosecurity.” In addition, Mr O’Connor says he has signalled that the Biosecurity Act is past its use-by date and needs a thorough review. “The current act gives us a solid foundation, but we need to make sure it is fit for purpose in a rapidly changing world. “This is a big job and needs to be carefully considered with strong input from industry and the public. I expect it to begin after we have dealt with the Mycoplasma bovis threat.”

either cause joint pain or worsen the pain from existing arthritis. In these cases, I add a high-grade coenzyme Q10 (CoQSol) to replace that lost by the medication. Call me for details. I have many clients that are largely symptom-free despite having significant cartilage loss. I have been dealing with a couple where one has an arthritic knee while the other has OA in the spine and hip. I started them on a double dose of my joint supplement. This meant that they were initially taking 1,600mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 400mg of a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. I put both of them on a double dose of my high chondroitin/turmeric joint product, and both are much more comfortable. The sore back is much better, and the hip and knee pain have significantly reduced. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. A gem in the midst by Jill Dickie
Located in the heart of central Taranaki is a town with a warm community atmosphere, a town, which offers a multitude of options for a satisfying and complete lifestyle. It is the closest main centre to Egmont National Park, New Zealand’s first heritage trail The Forgotten World Highway and beautiful views of Mt Taranaki providing inspiration for photographers and artists. Rich in Shakespearean history, the town was named to honour the great playwright’s birthplace, Stratford-uponAvon. Most of the street names have a reference to Shakespeare, and at the town’s famous Glockenspiel clock tower you can watch a five-minute rendition of his play, Romeo and Juliet at various times during the day. The town sits on the north bank of the Patea river within the Stratford District and is surrounded by sheep, beef and dairy farms. It is bounded by two National Parks: Egmont National Park to the west with the cone of Mt Taranaki

a dominant feature, and Whanganui National Park to the east. The local alpine bush provides plenty of scope for outdoor activities. There are a number of walking and hiking tracks ranging from a quiet stroll beside the bush-clad river to a four-day trek in Egmont National Park. Cyclists are catered for too with various grades of terrain for those up for a challenge! If you prefer to drive there are numerous country roads to investigate that will take you through the countryside to interesting and beautiful locations, some of them with historical significance. It’s not a long trip to the

coast and New Plymouth for a shopping excursion. For the fishermen, the Patea river provides ample opportunities in its upper reaches for large brown trout, some of which can reach trophy size and rainbow trout below the dam. The water is generally very clear flowing over a stone and gravel bed. Stratford has a plethora of other attractions too with its attractive parks and gardens, great food and accommodation, golf courses, speedway and winter pursuits. A perfect place for people and families to either enjoy a lot of activity or live life at a slower pace, to chill out and soak up the scenery.

Holiday Guide Are we there yet?
SAFETY FIRST
by Jill Dickie
ON THE FARM
This is the question often heard by a driver taking family members on a road trip, and sometimes it comes from adults in the car rather than children! ‘Where are we going?’ is sometimes another question asked, particularly when the trip is a surprise destination. When thinking of holidays or time away, the automatic response is to consider overseas options — a week in the islands enjoying sun, sand and cocktails, or a ski trip to Queenstown with evenings sitting next to a roaring fire in great company, for example. How about considering some of the pleasurable destinations close by, enabling a day trip or even an overnighter? Sometimes a short break away from the daily routine can be rejuvenating and invigorating, restoring energy levels by taking in a change in scenery or spending time with loved ones sharing new experiences. These trips have a minimal cost involved, and there is much less for you to organise too. Within the Taranaki region there are so many day trips available depending on your interest, and just outside that within half-a-day’s travel time, there are so many more delights to indulge in, suitable for both families or couples. A great example is Lake Taupo for its swimming, boating and fishing, and so

much more in the district to discover. From the thundering 11 metre high Huka Falls; the picturesque Acacia Bay for camping, fishing, and hiking; the thermal pools of Tokaanu or Wairakei Terraces, or just chilling out at the lakeside with a book may be an option for those less adventurous. Perhaps even a weekend escape to National Park in the Ruapehu region to take in the snow-covered tops of the mountains, a visit to the heavily-scented lavender gardens at Taumarunui, or
maybe a guided walk taking in scenes of crater lakes in Tongariro National Park. A little further north, but still an achievable half day’s travel, more experiences await. From trout fishing the beautiful lakes, investigating magical freshwater springs, geysers, and mud pools, and options to immerse yourself in Maori culture, it is easy to fill in a weekend away. All it takes is a little planning and preparation, and you’re off on that road trip! Are we there yet?

The most reassuring option is to arrange to have someone live in your property for the duration. There are various minding and house-sitting services available to choose from, with responsible, knowledgeable people who will care for your home and stock. Another option for your animals is to rotate their grazing paddocks in such a way that they will be placed close to a road where a friendly neighbour can keep an eye on them for you, and take action if needed, and perhaps they have a teenager at home that might check on your cat and feed your chickens. Maintaining healthy relationships with neighbours is important for cooperative living and at holiday times the friendships built to enable you a relaxing trip away confident in the knowledge your property is well looked after. If you’re holidaying in summer months, it’s a good idea to do a quick maintenance check ensuring fences are in good repair, and water troughs are functioning and set up an automatic sprinkler system on your vegetable
garden. Indoor pot plants can be set in buckets to draw up the water when they need it. For the winter months similar things apply with regard to fencing and water, but also some thought should be given to animal shelters or sheds. You may choose to lock gates around and into your property, though this can be a signal that you’re not home, and if your home isn’t visible from the roadside potential unlawful visitors won’t be seen. If you have precious stock like cattle that are clever at opening gates, it may be an opportune time to put a combination lock on. So far none have been known
to work out the correct number! As is ‘Murphy’s law’ whatever doesn’t happen when you’re at home, will potentially happen when you’re not, so leaving a thorough list of instructions and contact phone numbers with a housesitter is a perfect way of counteracting troubles. An instruction list should include animal feeding schedules, where to turn off electric fencing, combination lock numbers (but don’t let the cows see!), emergency contact details such as doctor, vet and neighbours and your own itinerary and contact number. Happy travels.

BUSINESS PROFILE
A time to learn Kids have so much fun, learning at kindergarten. They find new friends and burn off energy in the beautiful big outdoors developing positive social skills, independence and learn more about themselves.
Together they discover how so many things work and can be creative using a variety of resources, with the assistance of teachers. Our teachers understand how to support each child to increase their confidence to try new activities and to join in with the play. This learning lasts a lifetime, as do the friendships. Tamariki learn to love books, they enjoy counting and colours and shapes, they measure and mix, all of which helps establish reading, maths and science making the transition to school easier. Kindergarten Taranaki has 24 centres across the province, where all teachers are qualified and registered specialists in early learning. Kindergarten is open to everyone, free for three and four-yearolds for up to 20 hours a week, with a very low fee for up to 10 additional
hours. Tamariki can be enrolled from the age of two years if places are available. Whanau are encouraged to visit and stay until tamariki are settled. Kindergarten is a charity for children and an incorporated society where the parents are the members, and the governance board is their voice in decision-making. We encourage families to be actively involved, and all income goes back into the kindergartens. Our kindergartens value kaupapa Maori, are involved in Enviroschools and support the Healthy Heart initiative. So come and visit to see if kindergarten is the place for you. Our website has details of each kindergarten, you can send a facebook message or text to enquire when is a good time to visit, and the head teacher will reply to confirm.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
A journey of discovery by Jill Dickie
Could you write a story about dairy effluent? Something interesting for our farmers to read? This was the question posed to the writer who freely admits cattle are not her thing, having had a childhood around sheep and then spent many years around horses. What is this thing called effluent? Obviously much more than the first thoughts of bovine faecal matter; it appears this waste product actually has some use! Research shows it is a valuable resource, which, when managed well, increases pasture production and reduces fertiliser costs, so we’re picking that farmers need to effectively reuse this nutrient-filled product on their pastures yet at the same time minimising adverse effects on the environment. That much is easy to understand, however then our research gets a little more tricky as we discover there are various methods of building effluent systems, managing the storage of said product and compliance checks. A traditionally designed system with effluent washed to a storage area from the yards, then being pumped out onto paddocks via irrigators seems very easy to understand, but we have to take into account the climate and soil conditions in our area and how they will affect the effectiveness of the system. Understanding the soil water deficit is essential to prevent ponding and run-off, and to avoid applying effluent to saturated soils — now we are getting
a little technical, but luckily there are calculators available to work out appropriate spreading levels. Considering the storage facility, it seems the most common options are aboveground tanks and lined ponds, neither of which one would want to fall into! Again a calculator is available for working out much storage area is needed for your particular farm based on soil types and how much rainfall is common. Fencing ponds is an obvious safety priority to prevent stock and children from accidentally falling in, and keeping gates locked and perhaps using electric fencing as well certainly makes sense. Escape ladders are also recommended as an alternative escape route, as is good signage advising of potential dangers. Guidebooks for self-monitoring compliance issues are available for download, which would highlight areas for improvement, but even better is a visit from a dairy effluent warrant of
fitness assessor to make sure your system is fit for purpose, nutrient levels are appropriate and identify any health and safety hazards you may not be aware of. It all seems pretty simple to understand, and while this writer feels more educated on the topic, she feels she might stick with the easier to manage equine equivalent!

Good farming practices Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed the launch of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as providing a whole of sector approach that builds on the good work already being done by individual industries. “The launch of the Good Farming Practice Action plan is an exciting oppor tunity for New Zealand’s agricultural sector,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “This is the first time that farming and horticulture leaders, regional councils and central government have come together and agreed to a set of good practice principles and actions to implement those across the country.” The 21 principles cover nutrient levels, waterways, land and soil health, effluent management and water and irrigation systems, and these principles build on the work already being done in the sector. “As an industry, we see the aims of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as completely achievable. At Beef + Lamb New Zealand, we launched our Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan last month. It is aligned with the Good Farming Practice Action Plan and will support its achievement,” Mr McIvor said. “Clean water is one of the four priorities in our strategy. Our strategy sets out a number of ways in which we will improve water quality, including

The outdoor live-action arena offers thrills in the open air, while other live displays and demonstrations will be going on throughout the show. These include pit stop competitions, police recruitment and numerous other initiatives designed to engage and immerse fans. Hot Rods again form a solid element of the show which has become the number one place in New Zealand to launch new rods or show rare creations. Massive predator control project underway
23
A large-scale predator project, the biggest of its kind in New Zealand, was launched in Taranaki recently, supported by more than $11 million from the government. Taranaki aims to be the first predatorfree region in the country under the project, Taranaki Taku Turanga — Our Place, Towards a Predator-Free Taranaki, led by the Taranaki Regional Council. The region-wide collaboration between the council and rural landowners aims to eradicate introduced predators and prevent reinfestations from rural, urban and conservation land. It is understood to be the largest project of its kind in the world. Starting near New Plymouth, the project will be progressively rolled out across 4,500ha of farmland surrounding the Taranaki/Egmont National Park. The area will be defended from reinfestation by a ‘virtual barrier’ created by a network of intensive trapping. “Government funding of $11.7 million, invested via Predator Free 2050 Ltd into Taranaki Taku Turanga, aims to suppress or eradicate rats, stoats and possums in the area so our native birds and other wildlife can thrive,” said Conservation minister, Eugenie Sage. “This funding is being matched by local government and other funders at a ratio of more than three to one, with a total project budget of $47 million over five years.” It is the first large-scale project to receive funding from Predator Free 2050 Ltd, the company set up by the government in 2016 to help New Zealand achieve its predator-free 2050 goal.
Taranaki Taku Turanga will build on significant predator control work already being undertaken by the Taranaki Mounga Project. This large-scale ecological restoration collaboration between the Department of Conservation, eight Taranaki iwi, the NEXT Foundation and other sponsors, covers the 34,000ha of the national park. The project is using the latest technology and trapping techniques, with lessons shared, helping New Zealand achieve its predator-free aspiration. Several species have since been reintroduced to the area. Council chairman, David MacLeod, said strong community support will be vital to succeed and he’s confident Taranaki people will get behind it. “This is a massive opportunity for the region and for New Zealand.” “The support from Predator Free 2050 Ltd enables our region to protect and enhance native wildlife and plants, building on existing predator control work,” he said. Predator Free 2050 Ltd chief executive, Ed Chignell, is excited about the opportunities to advance the rest of the country’s predator work using lessons learnt from Towards a PredatorFree Taranaki. “A project of this size and covering all land types has never been attempted before and the lessons learnt will be shared with the country, advancing New Zealand’s predator-free 2050 goal.”
