Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash anticipates a 2.2 per cent fall in seafood exports, which will self-correct as the Covid-19 disruption runs its course

The latest Situation Outlook for Primary Industries, from MPI, forecasts primary sector revenue will rise 0.5 per cent in the year to June 2020 to $46.5 billion. “The sector is showing its underlying strength and resilience despite the challenging domestic drought and global conditions related to Covid-19,” Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said. “We saw strong performance across most of our primary industry exports in the first six months of the year, mostly as a result of growing demand and good prices in dairy, red meat and horticulture.” Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash said the impact of Covid-19 disruptions on the rock lobster industry is clear in the SOPI forecasts, which estimate a 2.2 per cent fall in seafood export revenue. “Despite the collapse of the rock lobster market in China, there is room

for the wider seafood industry to be optimistic,” he said. “Aquaculture earnings continue to grow and are expected to increase by more than 10 per cent in the current financial year. The SOPI notes that prices remain strong for hoki, there is a high demand for squid, and salmon and mussel exports are growing. “Anecdotal reports from our largest fishing port in Nelson also show that seafood exporters with diverse markets have had minimal disruptions from Covid-19.” The government is closely monitoring the situation the sector is facing. Working with industry leaders to ensure New Zealand’s high-quality products continue to get to market despite the global trade issues created by Covid-19, O’Connor said. “We know that our best economic defence is a strong health response that minimises the spread of the virus.”

Industry robust despite drought

The MPI’s recently published Situation Outlook for Primary Industries has not only tackled fears about the fallout from the Covid-19 coronavirus but also contains positive prognosis for areas of the nation weathering drought conditions. “We’re supporting our farmers and growers to get through the current drought in the North Island, parts of the South Island and the Chathams with the comprehensive $2 million package announced today,” says Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor. Included in the package are drought coordinators and additional coordinators, a feed working group, animal welfare information and expertise and professional advice for recovery, he said. “In my recent visits to farmers and growers across the country, I’ve seen the effort they are taking to deal with current conditions. While our forecasts show export revenue will take a number of short term hits, demand for New Zealand food and fibre products should continue to be strong in the longer term,” O’Connor said. “There are still some good prices, compared to previous years, for many of our products, including dairy. The predicted growth in this sector in the face of current challenges is credit to everyone’s hard work and shows how people are calmly working through

things.” For the year ending 30 June 2020, some strategic industries hit by the ‘big dry’ received a positive report card for future progress. Dairy export revenue is forecast to rise 6.3 per cent to $19.2 billion, driven by strong domestic production and favourable export prices to December. Prices for cheese and casein continue to strengthen, particularly in North Asia. Meat and wool exports are forecast to rise 0.3 per cent on the previous year to reach $10.2 billion, taking into account a reduction of $220 million due to reduced demand from China caused by Covid-19. The longer-term outlook for meat exports also looks bright, particularly in beef and veal, which is forecast to hit $3.4 billion in the year ending 30 June 2020 — 2.6 per cent on the previous year. Horticulture continues to be one of the star performers, with export revenue expected to rise 2.9 per cent in the year ending 30 June 2020, hitting $6.3 billion. That is driven by strong performance in kiwifruit, apples and pears.

he Taranaki teenager lives on her family’s dairy farm near Midhurst, where her parents, Jason and Jean, milk close to 400 Holstein Friesian cows. Lara often helps out on the farm, getting the cows in and milking them. “When it’s calving season, it’s all hands on deck with helping to get the calves and cows in, and feeding the calves. With a farm, there are always little jobs that my siblings and I are able to help Mum and Dad with.” Lara’s first taste of competition began when showing dairy cattle for pet day at primary school. Through this, at the age of seven, she developed an interest

in competing in the local calf clubs around Taranaki. “As I got older, around nine, my parents bought some pedigree calves from a local breeder for my siblings and I to show.” The siblings began to show their calves locally at the Egmont A&P Show and the Stratford A&P Show. Lara’s passion for competing has grown through showing dairy cattle. She has also found forming friendships with like-minded individuals on the show circuit an added bonus. “It has a culture that will help and support the newcomers or anyone

with their knowledge. I have received an immense amount of help over the years, and I am forever grateful to everyone who has helped in all aspects of showing dairy cattle. If you ask for help, you’ll always receive help. The 17-year-old has since travelled around the lower North Island to compete and would like to travel further. “I would like to help or even just watch other shows, including some time travelling to the international dairy week show over in Australia. Lara said she loves the showmanship aspect of showing cattle, including clipping and presentation. It was her steady hand with a set of clippers that helped her win a national accolade for showing and handling dairy cattle. Lara was awarded the Holstein Friesian NZ Paramount Cup at the National All Dairy Breeds Youth Camp in Stratford earlier this year. “Attending camp was such a rewarding experience. I learned heaps of new skills. Each participant had their own heifer calf to feed, groom, teach to lead on a halter and prepare for the show ring. The four-day event also held workshops on animal health, breeding and showmanship skills, as well as tuition on using electric clippers to trim the heifer’s coat. “There were many highlights, but some of the ones that stood out most was meeting new people who were around my age, that share the same passion for dairy cattle and showing them. I developed greater knowledge and learned heaps of new skills. Lara is currently learning about the breeding side of the dairy industry. “At the moment I’m learning about which

bulls carry specific traits and how to choose bulls that are going to suit the herd. Lara said choosing bulls with good production traits and genetics, and good daughter fertility rates, along with an average stature is being targeted on her parents’ farm. “I also love the calving season, helping mum with raising the calves, when I’m not busy with sports. Lara is a keen netball player and umpire,

working towards umpiring at a highperformance level. Now into her final year at Inglewood High School, Lara is undecided which career path to take. “At the moment I am leaning towards going to university, maybe to studying agricultural science or maybe teaching. However, with my subjects I have chosen at school, it’s led me to be open to anything.

An inspiring life — a lasting legacy

by Lockwood Smith

A funeral for a friend brings back memories. Saying goodbye to Mike Moore did just that. One was 1999 and the Battle for Seattle. As New Zealand’s International Trade Minister, I was escorted through the tear gas, weaving our way around the barricades. It was a full ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and protesters had gathered in their thousands. At the helm was new WTO Director General, the Rt Hon Mike Moore. He had just achieved the most important international role of any New Zealander in my lifetime. We were trying to launch a new trade round and Mike had me chairing one of the four working groups. We failed. Not Mike’s fault, but the Battle for Seattle, as it became known, was quite an event — subsequently made into a movie that typically bore little relationship to what really went on. The massive protests outside reflected one side of humanity — the events inside, another. In the final two days of negotiations we worked nonstop for 48 hours in what’s known as the Green Room, trying to negotiate a

positive outcome. I’ve never forgotten how unhelpful the EU was, or India for that matter, and how much I missed another constructive voice such as the UK could offer. But its voice, of course, was buried under the EU. Union leader, Ken Douglas, part of our delegation, became so worried about my well-being, that every time I emerged from the Green Room to update our team on progress, he’d bring me a fresh coffee. His thoughtfulness to someone from the opposite side of politics will stay with me forever. Their humanity sets good leaders apart. Ken Douglas had it and Mike Moore had it in spades. His was a life devoted to finding the forgotten, to empowering the underprivileged — he did it not just in New Zealand but globally. The work of the WTO has raised more millions of people out of poverty than any other organisation in human history and Mike Moore is part of that legacy. A kid from a working-class background, he grew up in Northland. His first job

was in the meat works at Moerewa, but a crucial time spent at Dilworth School in Auckland had engendered in him a love of books. His reading broadened his mind and underpinned his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to global leadership.

While a Labour man through and through, it was the National government under Jenny Shipley that nominated Mike for the WTO role. As Trade Minister, I was pleased to support it, but became more deeply involved when he needed to get the United States finally onside.

He’d run a typical Mike Moore campaign, living out of a shoebox in Geneva, the home of the WTO, doing the real hard yards. He’d captured a good proportion of the member countries to his cause, but needed the US — still a smidgen prickly over what they saw as the nuclear ships debacle. My working relationship with the Clinton administration by this time was pretty good. They’d even given me the White House operator’s phone number — an amazing system where, if they trusted you, you could get put through to key cabinet members wherever they were across the country. Towards the end of Mike’s WTO campaign, the US Trade Ambassador called me to talk about it. I backed Mike strongly. Whether it helped, I don’t know, but Mike finally got US support and the job. While we failed in Seattle, Mike succeeded in Doha with the new Development Round launched in 2001. He also successfully brought China into the WTO. I’d been a bit involved as the first Trade Minister in the world to sign China up to the WTO. Interestingly, for two politicians from the opposite sides of the political spectrum, we’d become great friends. When I was Speaker, Mike, then Ambassador to the United States, got me up to Washington for a couple of days to work with him around the Congress on trade issues. Mike was never boring. He had a unique way with thoughts and words, and while he made absolute sense to RD 20 02 Taranaki_Manawatu February 2020.qxp us Kiwis, you’d occasionally see a cloud

of confusion cross the face of some Member of Congress. Translation was sometimes required. Life was not a rehearsal for Mike. He lived it to the full. My head was never so sore as following evenings spent with Mike and Yvonne in Geneva or Washington. Their hospitality was legendary and solving the world’s problems invariably required more than one bottle of red. Much has recently been written about Mike’s contribution. But I think a bit has been missed, perhaps the most important of all. And it’s this. Over the past 30 years New Zealand built a unique global trade strategy. It involved not just working with our nearest neighbours on bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), but doing things regionally as well, such as with South East Asia via ASEAN, and more recently, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) — all the while promoting progress at the WTO. But New Zealand also learnt the hard way that at times you need to move unilaterally — removing barriers to trade within our own system, as protectionism had been shown by the early 1980s to be so damaging to our own economy. I don’t think that smart global trade strategy, so crucial in helping raise New Zealand from near bankruptcy in the early 80s to number one in the world on the Global Prosperity Index in 2016, would have lasted through successive changes of government had Mike Moore not laid the foundations for a bipartisan 12/02/20 1:11 PM Page 1 approach to trade liberalisation here in

New Zealand when he was himself Trade Minister in the 1980s. In my experience, few other countries in the world have seen the left and right of politics so consistently aligned in this critically important policy area. Traditionally, the political left has been less enamoured with trade liberalisation

eresa is a professional singer and has worked with horses for many years, evolving her training approach for individual situations. “My partner Michaela Evans and I moved back to New Zealand in 2011, and I brought my broad-brimmed hat, horse and dog with me,” says Teresa. “When I was younger, I started out working with horses and then secured a record deal and went touring for almost 30 years. I kept riding but was known more for singing in the USA and was performing at a music festival when I met the Topp Twins, Jools and Lynda. We started talking and discovered we shared a love of horses. We became fast mates, and our relationship

grew, and that is how I initially visited New Zealand.” Teresa stayed with Jools while she was hosting a horse clinic on her first visit. “She told the trainer I worked with horses. One horse was very difficult, and the trainer asked me what I would do. I ended up working with it and teaching lessons for three days and loved it here. Jools and Lynda often came and visited me when they were in the States. “Michaela is a rider and nationally recognised in dressage. She came to America to train with a dressage trainer, and we connected through friends for work. I have ridden with and learnt from many fine horsemen and women. I had

Jools and Lynda came and supported us at that time too. “Approximately seven years ago Michaela had an accident, so we returned to Hawke’s Bay to be near her family. It has been really difficult for her, but she is doing amazingly well and is doing great with poetry and art. “I love New Zealand, all I miss is my Dodge Ram, you could tow your house with that thing. I travel to clients between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay and focus on establishing a secure partnership with horses and their owners — regardless of discipline. “I came from having the best facilities to happily working in muddy paddocks and driving an old truck until recently. I trained with a famous horseman Buck Brannaman. “He is the man that the author of The Horse Whisperer watched and got the story idea from. I was involved in dressage and one day in the 80s decided this is it, I am going to dedicate myself to helping horses, not sing so much as horses are my passion. I am a problem solver, a behaviourist and help people who are having problems with their horses, or horses who are having problems with their people — which is often the case. “It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork. There is a lot of communication between horses that is not natural to people.

Teresa helps people understand how to communicate with horses through spatial awareness, problem-solving, instruction and lessons for all disciplines

They have a real sense of order. It is about movement. “If a new horse goes into a new paddock, you will see one horse will make an ugly face and herd the newcomer around. That is, so the new horse knows who yields their feet to who, because if danger comes they need to know what order to run as a herd for safety. “If a horse bites and kicks, based on horse language, it is often trying to get

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. *Results may vary

the other horse or person to move and yield their feet, so you know to follow them or they, you. People often back up from their horse. That is sending a mixed message, and the horse thinks ‘OK, you will follow me’. “They are not necessarily dominating — they are establishing an order of who moves first, particularly in case of danger. “Often backing a horse is enough to get a change in behaviour as they

then know whose space is whose. Once people learn how to communicate to horses through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. When people learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. “Happy horse, happy rider.” Follow Teresa on her website or Facebook pages NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay and NZ Horse Help. TO BUILD OR RENOVATE ADVERTORIAL

Retractable roof system pays off “Having an easy to operate roof system for Feed and Fertiliser Storage bunkers is the best solution to save time and money,” says Scott McLean of Coast Sliding Roofs.

Timo Tutavaha ttutavaha@gmail.com

He has a point. When your storage space is only as good as your access to it, then having an easy to operate sliding roof adds utility and efficiency! Having good storage for fertiliser and supplementary feed is essential. Farmers have known this since ancient times. It’s the great grain storage vaults created by the Egyptians, which fed their armies and helped build the pyramids. Those old-time grain storage solutions were never as convenient and easy to use as those made by Coast Sliding Roofs. Their modern storage systems were developed as a safe and easy retractable cover solution for feed and fertiliser bins. After talking with farmers during development, it was apparent that what they wanted was a quality roof system that was easily operated and didn’t take up much space. Coast then set about making a roof that was also cost-

effective. “At Coast, we are passionate about the product and stand behind everything we do,” says Scott. “We believe we have a sliding roof that ticks all the boxes. They are built

strong and will give years of trouble-free service. Our roofs offer affordable, costeffective weather protection, which is safe and easy to use. Above all, we are proud to say our roofs are Kiwi made.” For a look at the future of storage on the farm, and some smart ideas to save you time and money, please feel free to contact Coast Sliding Roofs on 0800 262 788 or email info@slidingroofs. co.nz.

Winning products are recognised for their ingenuity, for advanced product development, and for saving farmers time, costs and labour in the field, while making advances in ecology, economy and operator safety. With only 50 places to award across all the multiple facets of farming, they are hotly contested — to say the least. This year a significant AE50 Award went home with John Deere, for their highly advanced N500C Series air drill. Judges deemed the complex implement with its simplified interface; an outstanding innovation that improves production on the farm. “AE50 Awards reaffirm the innovative spirit of our employees and illustrate John Deere’s commitment to bring those linked to the land the most useful, highquality products possible,” says Joel Dawson, the director of production and precision agriculture for John Deere’s. He cited the firm’s commitment to

technology for highly accurate seed placement, and control and confidence to help them do the best seeding job possible for cereals, canola, soybeans and other crops. Feedback and an easy to understand control system make all the difference, as in farming knowledge is power. New technologies added to the N500C Air Drills include John Deere’s proprietary ActiveCal tank scales for on-the-go seeding calibration from the cab, RelativeFlow blockage for rowto-row seed-flow monitoring, TruSet downforce control from the cab, and the SeederPlus app for convenient calibration of meters and weight monitoring for tank scales. Combining both software and hardware advantages makes this seed drill easy to switch between different crops and fields, ensuring that every one of literally millions of seeds is put precisely in its place.

A man ahead of his time Rural contractors everywhere would likely be praising the name of Hiram Moore every morning as they turned the keys to their combine harvesters; if only they knew who he was. The American inventor lived an eventful life but missed out on fame and fortune by reaching too far too fast. Today he’s known as the father of the combine, but in his own time, he was the man who missed out on patenting the reaping machine. Moore lived in the interestingly named town of Climax, near Kalamazoo, Michigan, a place he’d helped to found by wagon train. The strait-laced Christian settlers saw nothing funny about the name; they were talking about the fact that the founding of the town was the high point of their journey west. They also found nothing funny about the sheer amount of crops, which the fertile soil there brought forth. Enough that, in 1835, a friend of Moore’s asked him if he could design a machine to help cut it all, saving the town’s scythe-swinging menfolk a lot of aching backs. It’s possible that Moore’s friend had read about a machine made by Scotsman Patrick Bell in 1826, using the same scissor cutting method sometimes still used today. A few of these machines had reached the east

coast before the founders of Climax saddled up to go west, but they were notoriously tricky to use and were never patented. However, Hiram Moore had a vision. He wanted to design a machine that could not only reap the grain but thresh it and winnow it too. All three parts of the machine were clear in his mind. He retreated to a large barn and began to experiment. In 1835, as the harvest came around, a monster of a machine came forth from that old building. Hiram Moore had done it. He had created the first-ever combine harvester, but it was gigantic. Twenty horses and a team of men were required to get it moving, and its internals were complex and made of wood and iron, not modern materials as we see today. Despite all this, the concept caught on. Poor old Hiram spent his later years wrangling with rival inventor Cyrus McCormick, who designed a simpler reaping machine at about the same time. Some Michigan folk say that Cyrus literally pinched patent blueprints from

The employment status of some 140,000 self-employed contractors across New Zealand is now in the government melting pot with submissions closed on February 14 in a public consultation over their job conditions. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is concerned that some contractors are vulnerable to poor outcomes because they lack both the protections offered to employees by law and the power to negotiate a better deal. However, some contractors oppose regulation and have expressed their views accordingly, saying change could increase the cost of business in the country. Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway says some contractors, and particularly dependent contractors, are vulnerable in the workplace. “For example, employees who are labelled as ‘independent contractors’ by their employers miss out on their basic employment rights. Workers who are caught in the grey zone between employee and contractor status are also vulnerable. I have heard stories of contractors who work long hours, in some cases 80 hours a week, or others who receive an income, which works out to be less than the minimum wage once you account for their hours. Some workers are finding themselves dependent on one employer for all their income, with no flexibility or power to negotiate better conditions. “In some cases, workers are completely unaware that they have

been engaged as contractors and not employees. These workers are surprised with tax and ACC bills at the end of the financial year, which they cannot afford. This government is committed to taking action to ensure that businesses treat contractors fairly.“ The ministry says it’s consulting the public on options for change to: • Ensure that workers receive their minimum rights and entitlements

• Reduce the imbalance of bargaining power between firms and contractors who are vulnerable to poor outcomes • Ensure that system settings encourage inclusive economic growth and competition The government is now evaluating written submissions and an online survey. However, the online discussion of the government proposal raises

027 368 5959 concerns that the proposed new contracting rules will force tens of thousands of compliant contractors to become ‘employees’ of the entities that they contract to. “It will affect many industries, rural contractors, skilled trades, professional services, freelancers, consultants, service businesses, real estate agents, taxi drivers, healthcare and many other contractors,” says one contracting enterprise. “These rules could potentially undo the healthy business relationships contractors have with their customers and the organisations they contract to. The changes under discussion could add a significant cost to New Zealand businesses.” Minister Lees-Galloway says New Zealand currently has one of the highest

employment rates in the OECD and near record-low unemployment. “Our GDP growth is better than the OECD countries we like to compare ourselves with. “We know our economy has solid foundations. “However, there are problems that have built-up for a number of decades and led to higher levels of inequality and poverty. Changes made to our labour market in the 1990s in the name of market flexibility have resulted in structural problems and left too many hard-working New Zealanders struggling to make ends meet. “Some of those changes may have been useful for GDP growth, but they also increased inequality by removing the checks and balances that were

needed to ensure all workers had the tools to support their wellbeing in the labour market.“ In a concurrent development, a law change is on the way for contractors working in New Zealand’s screen sector with these changes actually proposed by industry and largely supported by the government. They will see contractors allowed to bargain collectively. Government has largely agreed to their recommendations and is now drafting legislation to implement them.

Regulations spark opportunity Tightened United States rules on grass-fed milk and meat branding can be a windfall for Kiwi farmers, says Nathan Balasingham, Chief Technical Officer of New Zealand biotechnology company Zest Biotech. The updated USDA rule for ‘grassfed’ or ‘pasture-fed’ milk or meat is very restrictive. If managed prudently, it could give New Zealand farmers a market advantage. The rule, which was published in December 2019, will exclude a lot of our competitors who will not be able to eliminate grain from their feed. According to the US Department of Agriculture ‘Grass Fed’ or ‘100% Grass Fed’ claims may only be applied to meat and meat product labels derived from cattle that were only (100%) fed grass (forage) after being weaned from their mother’s milk. The diet must be derived solely from forage, and animals cannot be fed grain or grain by-products and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season until slaughter. That means 100% grass-fed animals are never confined to a feedlot. Grass-fed milk and meat are considered healthier with better taste and flavour. Animals raised as grass-fed have better animal health, animal welfare and climate change outcomes. The milk and meat has a better omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio, higher levels of antioxidants, lower risk of E coli infection

and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and are, therefore, better for consumer health. Grass-fed cattle produce beef that is tender because it cooks faster, and the well-marbled meat, in the opinion of many connoisseurs, is better-tasting than grain-fed beef. Zest Biotech has developed a pasture spray, Biozest, that is reported to significantly increase pasture productivity. Louise and Neville Williams, certified organic dairy farmers and Ballance Farm Environmental Awards winners in Karapiro, did a trial on baleage. The Biozest treated paddocks produced 13 bales a hectare on average, the untreated control paddocks averaged just seven bales a hectare. There was a 78% increase in baleage overall. Mike and Janelle Kelly in Orongo, near Thames, carried out a similar trial and produced 12 bales a hectare from the Biozest treated paddocks and five bales out of the untreated control paddocks. There was a 129% increase in baleage overall in the Biozest treated paddocks. If our farmers can improve pasture productivity on this scale, they can safeguard our grass-fed brand, which is valuable in all markets.

Time the great healer (Part one)

I recently spoke with a client who I first helped more than two years ago. He is an ex-farmer who was having real trouble with osteoarthritis in his knees. Realistically surgery was his only option. My role as a nutritional medicine practitioner is to identify the dietary and supplement options that can help. There are many factors that can cause osteoarthritis (OA). Genetics, injury, occupation and nutrition all play a part. Direct injury to joints can set off a faulty biochemical chain that finishes with the destruction of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes resulting in cartilage loss. Interestingly the same basic defective biochemistry is also triggered by nutritional factors. A deficiency in antioxidants, especially those made by the trace minerals selenium, zinc, copper and manganese leave chondrocytes exposed to oxidative stress, a technical term to describe free radical damage. The end result is always the same. Chondrocytes are damaged or die, meaning cartilage cannot be repaired. Eventually, cartilage thins often replaced by bony spurs as our bone survival mechanism kicks in. The body then tries to heal the problem

with inflammation — which makes it worse. Two years ago, I created a personalised nutritional support programme for my client. It included a dietary recommendation to support cartilage and to reduce inflammation. We added supplements initially at higher doses. That included my OA support supplement, which is a little different to most. While it includes glucosamine, the real hero is the 800–1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin sulphate supported by meaningful amounts of curcumin from turmeric and fish oils to reduce inflammation. This week I emailed him to ask how he was doing. His response was that he thinks he has delayed future surgery by 10 years. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Chairman confirms retirement Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited chairman John Monaghan has confirmed that he will retire as a director of the co-operative when his current three-year term ends at its annual meeting this November. In a note to the co-operative’s farmerowners and unitholders, Mr Monaghan explained that his decision was the next step in the Fonterra Board’s

development and succession planning. “After 11 years as a director, and having seen through the introduction of our new strategy, operating model, and with our

debt reduction efforts well progressed, the timing is right for me and the co-op,” he says. “The board is committed to a planned chair succession that provides Miles and his senior management team with the governance stability and confidence they need to maintain the co-op’s momentum.” Fonterra said its board’s current plan was to announce a chair-elect by no later than August this year. That timeline would give its farmer-owners transparency of leadership prior to the co-operative’s director elections and allow for a period of handover before Mr

Monaghan retires from the board. Under Fonterra’s constitution, its chairman must be selected from its pool of seven elected farmer directors on the board. Its independent directors are not eligible for consideration as chairman. The co-operative also provided an update on a replacement for former independent director Simon Israel, who retired from its board in November last year. Fonterra says it is making good progress on securing a replacement for Mr Israel and will update its farmerowners and unitholders once a suitable candidate has been confirmed.

The ‘wizard’ vs the farmboy

by Andy Bryenton

One was called the ‘Wizard of Menlo Park’ thanks to his inventions, which transformed modern society. The other was a farmer’s son from Pahiatua. When the pair faced off over creating a new way to milk cows, all the smart money was on Thomas Alva Edison, enthroned as the ‘new Isaac Newton’, friend of industrialists Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. However, the smart money would have lost. In turn-of-the-1900s Wairarapa, machinery was becoming a bigger part of farming. The leather belts, steam engines and turning wheels of wool processing machinery, and the shuttle ploughs and timber mills, which ran off traction engines fascinated young Norman Daysh. He knew that others had been trying to perfect a milking machine for some time. Previous attempts had all been made by engineers and scientists who did not have his practical experience. As a Kiwi farmhand, Norman was all too familiar with milking cows, and he knew that contraptions that hurt or scared the animals would be useless in the shed. Thomas Edison had fixed his sights on various designs, in an attempt to do for dairy what others had done before him for grain with the combine harvester. The inventor of the record player and the light bulb examined ideas with rollers,

gripping automaton ‘hands’, pulsators and many other concepts. None was practical in the reality of the farmyard, where complicated machines could be kicked to pieces or contaminated with dirt, and anything that spooked the cattle would cause more harm than good. Contraptions with belts, springs and tanks for the cow to wear were rejected out of hand. Enter Daisy, the first cow to experience a modern milking machine. In the farm kitchen of Norman Daysh, this pioneering animal was the test subject for his final development. It was a milking machine of the kind we know today, vacuum-powered, with cups that mimic the action of a suckling calf. Daysh took out a swathe of patents, then set off for New York, where the DeLaval company accepted his idea with open arms. They have been quoted as saying that “What Norman

Daysh achieved remains the basis of our company today”, and worked with Daysh to release a revolution in farming in 1917. The farmer’s son from the back blocks beat Edison, who was thankful

for the advancement even if he didn’t win the race. In his later years, he swore by fresh milk as a health tonic, and Norman and DeLaval’s creation kept it in ready supply.

BACK

or

NECK PAIN?

Then try a Teeter WHY INVERSION?

Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, first recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC, otherwise known as spinal traction. Traction was used by modern hospitals for many years however because it is a slow process and ties up hospital beds for many weeks, they recently stopped using the treatment. Inversion Therapy is gentle and relaxing if done properly and has many other benefits apart from relieving back pain, it helps realign the spine and pelvic area, loosens up tight muscles, increases oxygen to the brain, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and has many other benefits.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

Inversion NZ have been teaching people how to use this treatment for over twelve years, it is an amazing process with most people getting off the Teeter pain free for the first time in years or with their pain substantially reduced. The relief usually lasts around 30 minutes to three hours and as the pain returns you use the machine again, after using this method of treatment, in a few weeks the relief increases, which is the discs starting to retain more fluid, muscles starting to loosen up and the body coming back into alignment. In our experience most people are pain free in around three months, then the Teeter is used daily to maintain the health of the body.

WHY TEETER?

The biggest issue with inversion tables is there is no safety standards that need to be met. Because of this, other brands use mild steel for 100% of the metal involved. Mild steel is great for static loads, in other words things that don’t move such as chairs, tables etc, however with Inversion Therapy there is considerable movement and this movement causes mild steel to flex. Because it always flexes in the same place it eventually causes metal fatigue and can result in failure. Frank Harwood (84 at time of picture) using his Teeter, Frank’s been Inverting for over eleven years and has found it keeps him young

All Teeters are manufactured for extreme safety. Heat treated high tensile steel has been used in all areas subjected to stress. High tensile steel is far stronger and most importantly does not flex. This means Teeters are the strongest and safest tables on the market today.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create a suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

It is also a great way for people who already own a Teeter to come along and get a refreshment course on the use and operation of their Table and clear any questions they have about it. Sessions run continuously from 10am to 4pm and there are no bookings required, just come along at a time that suits you. There may be a wait during certain times and in these instances chairs are set out for anyone waiting for a turn, or anyone who just wants to ask us a few questions. We strive to cover the entire country and always try to book the most accessible venues we can. Twin-spin induction for Ranger by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s success with the Ranger ute is verging on the biblical, with variants of the popular light commercial popping up everywhere you turn. Stand on a busy street corner and count them going past, and you’ll see just how deep New Zealand’s love affair with the Ranger goes. Now there’s a new name in the line-up, and it’s not so much filling a gap as it is creating new demand, with the magic words ‘bi-turbo’. It’s not the first twin-forced-induction Ranger, but it is the return of the FX4 badge to the line-up, slotting in just between the XLT and the top-spec Wildtrak. It’s not just twin-spooling action under the hood which recommends this new machine. There’s a whopping 10 gears behind the bell housing as well, and some distinctive styling to make the new FX4 stand out from the pack. “We are excited to be able to offer our customers the new FX4 with the biturbo engine alongside the class-leading 10-speed automatic transmission. To have the addition of both a 4WD and 2WD Ranger FX4 really steps things up for them. “It is the first time we have offered the bi-turbo/10-speed combination in a 2WD Ranger,” said Simon Rutherford, managing director of Ford New Zealand. “It’s all wrapped in its very own design elements and features, to offer customers a Ranger with a genuine identity as a stand-alone model.” Ford’s bi-turbo powertrain was first introduced on the Ford Performance

Ford’s Ranger FX4 bi-turbo stands out from the rest with new styling and that signature double-forced-induction engine note

Ranger Raptor and produces a healthy 157kw of power and 500 newton-metres of torque. In this iteration, it’s mated with a specifically tuned, new generation 10-speed paddle-shift automatic, allowing the convenience of auto with the option to take command of downshifts for effortless passing manoeuvres. The

10-speed automatic includes a lockout feature to hold specific gears when towing, giving the Ranger FX4 bi-turbo a braked towing capacity of 3,500kg. It’s not all about sheer muscle, though; the
