At a recent Taranaki Regional Council policy and planning committee meeting, councillors agreed that subject to suitable arrangements being secured, the council will provide up to $10,000 funding to support the introduction of dung beetles to the region. Pole planting urged on hill country farms

Hill country farmers in the Taranaki region are encouraged to plant more poplar and willow poles before winter sets in. Taranaki Regional Council land services manager Don Shearman said now is the time to order poplar or willow poles. Through its South Taranaki and Regional Erosion Support Scheme (STRESS), the Taranaki Regional Council assists with the cost of poles. The programme, which has been running for five years, recently received approval for another $1.2 million by the Ministry of Primary Industries. STRESS will continue for another four years. “The storm and flood event in June last year was a graphic demonstration of just how vulnerable the eastern hill country can be to devastating landslips,” said Mr Shearman. “Not only did they cause extensive damage to pasture and infrastructure, but they filled waterways with sediment and made the flooding worse.” He said people’s memories can fade as time rolls by and new growth covers the scars and tension cracks on the hillsides. “But it’s important to take action to stabilise the land before the event. Soil stabilisation measures
like poplar poles need a good eight to 10 years to be effective — and we can expect storms like June’s to occur more regularly.” States of emergency were declared in Taranaki, Whanganui and Rangitikei following last year’s June storm which dumped between 130mm to 302mm across the region in a 24 hour period. Taranaki hill country farms were left with soil erosion, extensive slipping and damage to fencing. As well as grants for poplar poles, the STRESS programme delivers funding for forestry establishment, fencing off retired land, and land use change. Subject to criteria being met, financial assistance is available to farmers for forestry establishment, forestry fencing, manuka reversion, poplar or willow poles to reduce erosion, and retirement fencing for steeper areas. THE 2016 TARANAKI DAIRY MANAGER OF THE YEAR, SAM HOWARD, WAS A FIRST TIME ENTRANT IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY AWARDS.
T
he 27-year-old grew up on a sheep farm and it wasn’t until he was a university student that his initial involvement in the dairy industry began, working as a farmhand through the summer break. Sam was the recipient of a DairyNZ scholarship while he studied towards a Masters degree in Applied Economics at Massey University. Following graduation he worked as a DairyNZ economist for a couple of years, furthering his dairy farming and farm management knowledge. His DairyNZ position also involved working with regional councils on developing policies around nitrogen leaching. In 2014 Sam headed to Australia. It was there that his dairy farming career essentially started when he took up an assistant manager position on a 650cow high input farm near Warrnambool
in Victoria. In February last year, Sam began his current position as production manager on Allan and Aggy Mills’ dairy farm near Stratford. The farm covers 108 hectares (96 effective hectares) and is currently milking 315 Jersey/ Friesian crossbreds. This season’s target is 160,000kgMS. The nature of the work involved in dairy farming appeals to Sam. “Being able to work in an environment with the land and the animals that I believe many office workers would envy, and the opportunities that the industry provides,” he said. Sam’s studies continue as he is currently undertaking the Primary ITO Level 5 Production Management course. He’s also completed a short nutrient management course through Massey University. Sam believes a successful dairy farmer has to have knowledge and

skills across a huge range of areas. Speaking to previous dair y industr y awards entrants was the main drive behind Sam’s decision to enter the competition. “I spoke to people who had entered and were knowledgeable.” He said they were all overwhelmingly positive about entering. “They mentioned the benefits of learning about your own operation’s strengths and weaknesses through your own critical thinking and the judges’ feedback, and the opportunities for progression and getting to know other people within the industry.” Sam is also involved in dairy discussion groups and was a Young Farmers member when he lived in the Waikato. Next season Sam will step into a variable order sharemilking position on a Tariki farm owned by Taranaki Federated Farmers’ president Bronwyn Muir, and her husband Phill. He plans to work up the ladder towards owning a herd of between 200–300 cows, then aims for farm ownership. “My long-term goal is to own a farm that allows me the choice whether to be hands-on farming full-time or pursue

Former Holstein Friesian New Zealand president, Wayne Taylor, grew up in an urban environment in the north Taranaki town of Waitara. At that stage, his only link to dairy farming was through his father, a milk tanker driver, and extended family members who were farming in the Taranaki.
W
ayne spent his weekends and school holidays on the family’s farm and soon developed a taste for farming. When he left school, Wayne took a job at the Clifton dairy factory just out of Waitara. After six years, and a number of factory amalgamations, Wayne decided on dairy farming as a career choice. He took up his first job working for wages
on a north Taranaki dairy farm. When Wayne and his wife Leeanne started out contract milking in 1983, they began to form the foundation for their own herd of registered Holstein Friesians, starting with a few heifers. Some of the foundation stock for their Muritai Holstein Friesian Stud were purchased from Wayne’s uncle. As the couple have moved up the dairy industry ladder,

Cow numbers were cut back slightly during the wet Spring, milking 190 cows through the peak of the season. “We’ve culled more cows and now have 165 at the moment,” he said. “This was in anticipation of another dr y Summer which for tunately hasn’t eventuated.” Wayne said with the current forecast payout, his short-term plans are to batten down the hatches and hang on, riding out the downturn by sticking to the basics. The couple’s three children, and their grandchildren, are all involved in dairy farming and enjoy showing their dairy cattle at events in the North Island. “We have a passion for breeding Holsteins,” said Wayne. Wayne has served 14 years as a board member for Holstein Friesian New Zealand, with three years as vicepresident and two as president. He has been a classifier/inspector; is a senior judge for Holstein Friesian New Zealand; has strong involvement, along with Leeanne, in the youth programmes; and serves on the Sire Proving Committee.
Leeanne and Wayne Taylor they continued to build up their herd of registered Holstein Friesians, along with a handful of Jerseys, through breeding and buying cows. Wayne and Leeanne are now into their 10th season sharemilking in their present job and are milking their herd on a 68-hectare effective farm at Tikorangi, inland from Waitara. The farm, which belongs to Ian and Janet Finer, is supported by a 20-hectare run-off two kilometres down the road. Wayne said the weather in the area is fairly mild. “We get reasonable growth all year round but it can get dry here in late January and February.”
The couple manage the pasture through rotational grazing and feeding out palm kernel, as well as silage and hay made on the run-off. Although the average rainfall measures close to the two-metre mark, last year was the wettest that Wayne can recall. “Eliminating pasture damage during July and August, along with feeding cows was a real challenge in what proved to be the wettest Winter/Spring we’ve ever had.” “Fortunately there were no lasting repercussions,” said Wayne. Despite a very dry Summer, last season was the herd’s best ever, producing 1,140kgMS per hectare.

Wayne also has a strong interest in the genetic side of the industry. “We also do quite a lot of work with the AB industry, breeding and supplying bulls for the New Zealand dairy industry. “Muritai Firenze Wynsor is a bull of ours being used quite extensively in the national herd at present.” At the 2012 Holstein Friesian New Zealand annual conference, Wayne and Leeanne’s cow, Muritai Dalton Wattle EX 17*ET received the inaugural Valden Cow of the Year award. This award recognises cows that have made a significant contribution to the Holstein Friesian breed, either within the herd or nationally. Muritai Leader Willow EX 5 4* received this award in 2013 and Muritai Talent Wattle EX 2 in 2015. At the 2013 annual conference, Wayne and Leeanne were awarded the Distinguished Services Award for their services at local branch and national level. This service still continues today. “It was a huge honour, very humbling, being acknowledged by the membership,” said Wayne.

Transporting stock When it comes to transporting stock there are a number of things that farmers must remember which will make the process as easy as possible for all involved. Dealing with waste and keeping effluent off the roads is one of the major responsibilities from the farmer, the stock broker, the transport company, those at the destination, and local and regional councils. Ensuring that the effluent tanks are empty before setting off on your journey is a good place to start to avoid a messy situation, especially if it rains. As most good farmers know it is important to keep stock off green feed for at least four hours before they are loaded onto the truck or the night before if they are to be picked up early in the morning. Making sure your animals are fit for transport is another responsibility that should be taken seriously. There are a number of simple guidelines you can stick to make sure your animals meet the Ministry of Primary Industries Dairy Cattle Code of Welfare. Someone must examine the selected cattle to ensure that all are healthy and there

When transporting stock to slaughter make sure they have a body condition score of three or greater. An animal with a body condition score of 2.5 to 3 can go directly to slaughter but not to sale yards, and those with a BCS below 2.5 must not be transported unless a veterinary certificate is provided. Stock need to be outside the milk and meat withholding times and have their Animal Status Declaration and NAIT number. They should also be milked just prior to transportation or well dried-off and have had plenty of magnesium during the days leading up to transport. Sticking to all these points will mean transportation will be as smooth and as stress free as possible for everyone.

Choosing a contractor The safest bet, when choosing a contractor, is to consult with friends and family — this way you can rest assured that they are trustworthy and reliable. When getting major work completed, it is a legal requirement that the work is carried out by someone with a licence. This can be checked on the New Zealand plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers Board public register at www.pgdb.co.nz. Plumbing for example, with the exception of some minor work, must be carried out by a licenced or certifying plumber. Plumbers are licenced by either the individual, or the company the plumber works for. They should carry with them an authorisation card and if they don’t have the appropriate licence their work needs to be supervised by someone with the appropriate licence or registration. New plumbing and drainage work will require a building consent. The same applies for gasfitters and as incorrect installation of these products could be fatal it is extra important to check accreditation before work begins and you hand over your hard earned money. All new installations, extensions, replacements or alterations must adhere to the appropriate regulations. Trainees in this field of work must be
supervised by a certified gas fitter. They must also carry an authorisation card and any supervision requirements will be on the back. Once everything has been inspected and is up to standard you should be issued with a copy of the Gas Safety Certificate. This is required for any new gas installation, and for any addition or alteration to an existing installation since July 1, 2013. A database of electrical and gasfitting work considered high-risk is kept by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, however this does not include all normal household work. It is advised that you keep records and certificates of work completed on your home or business in a safe place and have copies on and off site. Work completed prior to 1993 may not have a certificate however one can be obtained by contacting the company that did the work or by searching on the plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers Board website and filling out a form to get a copy of an existing certificate.

the minerals do not leach from the soil. The plant draws on the minerals it wants from the humus, via the plant roots. The minerals in this form are recognised by the plant at the cellular level, the ultimate level for plant uptake for energy and growth. The big benefit from this system is that the humus produced by the microorganisms not only holds minerals, but also, moisture; increasing the water retention capability of the soil. Rule of thumb calculations state that good levels of humus in the soil can reduce irrigation requirements by 50 percent. After 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia, Gerard Anselmi of Recharge the Battery Additive, says the message is getting through — prevention is better than a cure when it comes to batteries. “The big issue is — every battery you buy is sulphated. Treat batteries early with Recharge, repeat the process every two years and keep batteries charged by backing up with a mains powered charge every six months or so. Most batteries will go a long time — 10 years or more. Yes you will get some failing batteries back but not all, so worth a go at $4 or $5 per car battery,” he says. Gerard and his wife Debbie attend shows about every week in New Zealand and Australia where they meet Recharge customers with batteries that are 10, 12 and 14-years-old and often still going. “I had a farmer at the Southland Field Days in Waimumu in February who told me he’d been using Recharge for years. When he took the battery that had just died, out of his tractor — it was 17-years-old. “Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphation buildup on internal lead plates, corroding the lead plates and compromising the battery’s holding capacity.” According to Gerard most batteries are ready sulphated when purchased so treating them early and keeping them charged will prevent premature battery failure with the simple Recharge Battery
Conditioning Program. The pair will be at New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays again this year on their usual site — K-25 — doing special deals, talking battery maintenance and how to average over 10 years out of your farm batteries. Treating sealed batteries is as simple as drilling into each cell, treating and re sealing with sika-flex auto or a plastic bung. Fertiliser inputs in Autumn are nearly always restricted by available dollars, and for many this Autumn the cuts will be deeper. However some nutrient application is essential for longterm prosperity. There are a growing number of farmers spending less on nutrient than conventional models indicate is necessary. This is because they are effectively and efficiently utilising nutrient and moisture from as deep as 50cm below ground level. And the benefit is not just cost relative to production. They also enjoy greater total pasture production, and markedly lower animal ill-health expenses. The last article on the value of dolomite as a magnesium fertiliser discussed the concept that animal, plant, and soil health are inexorably linked, with the wellbeing and robustness of soil, the foundation of any successful long-term farming operation. One of the major reasons to date, for farmers to contemplate a change from their conventional nitrogen fertiliser dependent soil fertility system, is frustration with persistent animal illhealth issues. Bloat is sometimes mentioned as an objection to implementing a soil fertility programme where nitrogen comes primarily from nodules on clover roots, and the concern is well founded in experience. However, bloat is seldom a topic of conversation, and certainly rarely a concern for farmers on properties where Golden Bay dolomite is applied annually, due to its unique ability as a soil conditioner. Not only does the extra calcium and magnesium applied encourage more activity by earthworms and other beneficial soil dwellers, but soils compressed under the heavy treading inevitable on any intensive farming operation, steadily become noticeably softer. The benefit of this is the ability of plant roots to penetrate further down,

extracting nutrients from below the 7.5cm depth taken in a standard soil test probe, resulting in plants containing a better and more consistent balance of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Ideally soils consist of 25% air, 25% moisture, with the balance being mineral and organic matter. Beneficial soil dwellers, earthworms included, have an ongoing requirement for air and when the surface of the soil is packed and hard their activity is reduced and plant growth slows. Apart from a greater incidence of bloat and other costly metabolic disorders, pasture grown on soils that are compacted, with few plant roots penetrating below 10cm, are characterised by stop/start growth. When moisture, temperature and direct sunlight are all favourable, rampant growth can be expected. But only while those conditions last. As soon as there’s a frost, or three days of hot drying wind, growth suddenly slows, and the typically difficult to manage pasture feast or famine situation arises. Growth on physically well-structured soil is not only greater over twelve months, it is also more even throughout the season. The areas on the property where electric fence standards are easily positioned to their full depth are nearly always the most productive areas of the property. Magnesium also aids with the uptake of phosphorus, an important aspect to consider this Autumn as phosphorus is an essential element. In situations where higher than maintenance phosphorus has been applied over many years the use of dolomite will assist plants to access this valuable resource which has

hitherto been largely unavailable. As always, a current soil test is important when considering a change. Not all soils are deficient in magnesium. However intensive dairying has an ongoing requirement for magnesium, and a soil test is the best means of determining plant available levels. The standard annual recommended rate of dolomite to permanent pasture is 220kg/ha which applies 25kg Mg/ha, sufficient for intensive high producing dairy properties. Golden Bay dolomite is available from the major fertiliser companies and may be mixed with non-nitrogen fertiliser products. innovation is just wasting taxpayers’ money, particularly when related to soil fertility. When you study the background of this prominent soil scientist, the reasons for his entrenched views become clear. His PhD is in Chemical Soil Science and his career has been forged in that synthetic arena. Given his lifelong commitment to chemical science, it’s almost inevitable that he would regard biological concepts as ‘pseudo science’ that are unworthy of consideration. This perspective is hurting our farms. How? Because Chemical Science is dominating the NZ fertiliser industry, a lack of attention is given to the biological life in soil. That’s a very bad mistake, because these organic life forms play an absolutely critical role in determining the productivity levels of our farms. Any approach that neglects the role of soil biology is woefully inadequate and, at best, produces only short term gains. Having talked in depth with soil scientists, it is clear to me that all of the sciences — chemistry, physics and biology — are necessary for any soil and fertiliser debate to be balanced. Over the last 10 years, there have been advances in soil conditioning precisely because all of the sciences have been incorporated. This more balanced approach has allowed innovative farmers to produce better soil physiology, better nutrientdense feed, and healthier stock. Interestingly, most of these advances have come from outside New Zealand, predominantly from the United States. I have had the privilege of working with some of these leading edge people: Elaine Ingham (Soil Food web); Neal Kinsey (Kinsey/Albrecht); Arden Andersen (he has linked unbalanced soil fertility to the decline of human Health). Is New Zealand catching on? Yes it is. In spite of the chemical emphasis, there has been an increase of businesses and innovative farmers who are adopting a more biological approach. As a result, many farmers are crying out for New Zealand scientists

to give them a better understanding as to biological reasons behind the good results they are witnessing on other farms. One Canterbury farmer took things even further. Owning two farms side by side, he adopted two distinct approaches to soil fertility. One farm was treated with standard chemical systems while the other was run on biological principles. He then asked scientists to compare the two farms. Great approach. Should yield interesting data, right? Unfortunately, accurate conclusions will be hard to come by because the scientific steering committee that oversees the results does not have any biological representation. That’s such a shame. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to foresee that the conclusions won’t be factually balanced. Propaganda that favours the current fertiliser politics will prevail, which will only continue to prop up an unbalanced approach to fertiliser science. It seems that to ask a chemical scientist to discuss biological matters of the soil would be like asking an atheist to discuss the advantages of praying to God. So here’s my challenge to New Zealand’s soil scientists: Take the blinkers off and widen the scope of your research. Work in partnership with the other sciences and pay more attention to the soil organisms that seem to be hugely beneficial to farm health. That can only lead to better farming in our great country.

Next superstars selected After a rigorous four-year process, 17 bulls have hit the big time and are set to become household names. These young superstars graduated this year as CRV Ambreed proven sires, which means they are considered to have the highest genetic merit. They feature in the herd improvement company’s annual catalogue, which thousands of dairy farmers peruse each year to select the right genetics to meet their herd improvement goals. “The genetic merit of these elite sires will ultimately ensure dairy farmers’ herds will be easy to manage and efficient,” said Global product manager Peter van Elzakker. The selection process starts each year when CRV Ambreed’s sire analysts travel around the country to find New Zealand’s very best cows that will produce the next ‘super bull’. Farm visits in 2011 led to the new graduates being 17 of roughly 1,600 bull calves nominated that year for consideration into CRV Ambreed’s progeny test programme. “Our breeding team also use their specialist knowledge of cows and their families to assess the potential of each bull calf. We ended up selecting 150 bull calves to be part of CRV Ambreed’s progeny test programme that year,” said Mr van Elzakker.
