ALTOGETHER STRIDES AHEAD
It is the second time monthly red meat exports have topped the billiondollar mark. Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said the first time New Zealand’s monthly exports hit the billion-dollar mark was in March 2020 at the start of the global pandemic. “The March 2021 month’s $1.04 billion export earnings confirm the strong global demand for safe, quality red meat. It also suggests that some of the initial Covid-19-related disruptions are starting to resolve as countries get on top of the virus.” China took 45 per cent of New Zealand’s total red meat exports in March, to the value of $464 million. That was an increase of 35 per cent from the same period in 2020. New Zealand sheep meat exports to China also increased to a record monthly volume of 36,434 tonnes. In March, China imported an overall total of 294,410 tonnes of red meat from all countries, with sheep meat imports increasing by 106 per cent — beef imports remained steady. New Zealand’s share of sheep meat and beef imports was close to 19 per cent. “Despite supply chain issues, China is largely back to normal with strong consumption and demand, and this is great news for our sector,” said Ms Karapeeva. “Chinese consumers are seeking attributes such as high food safety standards, wellness and nutrition from the food they buy. New Zealand’s excellent reputation means we are in a strong position to respond to this demand.” The ongoing impact of Asian swine fever in Chinese pig herds has driven China’s strong demand. The country’s domestic pork supply reduced by at least 20 million tonnes in 2020.
Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva
For the past 12 months, exports to China have remained the same at $3.6 billion while exports to the United States, the second-largest market, increased by eight per cent to $1.8 billion. The next two largest markets, the UK and Japan, have seen exports decrease to $406 million and $374 million, respectively. Disruptions in March last year, due to Covid-19, saw exports normally destined for China diverted to other international markets. However, while exports to most other markets were down year-on-year, this was primarily attributable to current Chinese demand and a return to more standard export destinations. Red meat exports for the first quarter of 2021 were worth $2.7 billion. “Although there are some significant logistical and other ongoing global challenges, the red meat sector continues to deliver for New Zealand farmers and the economy,” said Ms Karapeeva.

Pest plant threat to biodiversity
P.D. FLEMING LOGGING LTD
A recent pest plant inspection, completed by the Taranaki Regional Council, has found the Kahili ginger plant is widespread throughout the New Plymouth district. Roadside inspections carried out by council environment officers across New Plymouth, Oakura, Okato and Waitara, revealed a number of pest plants listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan. Following these inspections, 250 letters were sent to landowners informing them of pest plants on their properties. Advice was also given to landowners on how to identify the plants and their obligation to control these. Council environment ser vices manager Steve Ellis said the overwhelming majority were for Kahili ginger, with old man’s beard and giant gunnera also spotted. He said ginger might be pretty to look at — but it’s invasive and nasty. “It clogs our waterways, threatening native fish and ecosystem health. It reproduces quickly and can quickly take over an area, shading out native species. “The main goal of the pest plant inspection was to educate and raise awareness,” he said. “We found many people didn’t know what ginger or old man’s beard looked like, let alone the immense damage they do or that they have a legal obligation to control it. “Our officers spent a lot of time advising those landowners, helping them identify their pest plants and the measures needed. Hopefully, people are now more aware and are talking to their friends and neighbours about what’s in their gardens.” As a result of the discovery of Kahili ginger, TRC is holding a free ‘Swap your ginger for a native tree’ day with the support of New Plymouth District Council, saving locals the time and cost of disposing of the weed.

Mr Ellis said controlling pest plants is crucial to Taranaki’s biodiversity and has to be a team effort. “We’re asking people to check out the photos of the most common pest plants, then take a look in their gardens. Talk to your neighbours. If you’ve got some, chances are so do they, in which case it’s best to coordinate your control. “If in doubt, give us a call on 0800 736 222, and one of our team will come out and take a look. If the weed is on NPDC land, please contact them directly.” The ‘Swap your ginger for a native tree’ day will be held on Sunday, May 23, 10am to 2pm at the TSB Stadium car park. The Kahili, or yellow ginger plants, including the roots, will be swapped for a free native tree while stocks last. Further information on plant identification is at weedbusters.org.nz.

DETERMINATION SECURES
FARM OWNERSHIP by Denise Gunn
Hard work, sound financial decisions, along with the assistance of several different industry professionals, has seen Blair and Nicola Childs progress up the property ladder to buy a 71ha dairy farm.
T
he farm, which they take over on June 1, is the second for the young couple. Entry into the property market began through renovating a house that Blair owned. The couple then built and sold two houses. One of these houses was built on a 20ha runoff they purchased in 2013. “We were always looking for opportunities, and we always worked as hard as we could, for as long as we could,” said Blair. Growing up on her family’s 250cow dairy farm at Mangatoki, Nicola
developed a love for the lifestyle, animals and being outdoors. For the past nine years, she’s worked as a veterinary nurse/technician at Eltham District Veterinary Services. Blair, a cabinetmaker by trade, grew up in Stratford. During the past nine years, he has worked in the building industry. “When we were building the house at the runoff, we would go there straight after our day jobs and work as late as we could, working every weekend for a year. It paid off in the long run because

it all contributed to getting to where we are now.” The couple married in 2013 — the same year they purchased the 20ha runoff. Blair and Nicola used this property to graze dairy heifers, and it was here they developed a desire to go dairy farming. A farm ownership goal was set, and two years prior to buying their first dairy farm, Nicola reduced her hours to parttime at the veterinary clinic, taking up additional work on a 400-cow dairy farm. When they sold the runoff, Blair and Nicola bought their first dairy farm on
the Stratford town boundary. The 37.5ha (33.5ha effective) property, running 105 cows through a 14-aside herringbone shed, produced 515 milk solids a cow this season. Although Nicola had plenty of dairy farming experience when the couple bought their first dairy farm, Blair had milked just a handful of times. They both continued to work off-farm. “With us both having off-farm jobs, it sure was a constant challenge with coming home in our lunch breaks to calve cows. Also, getting up early to get all the jobs done before going to our other jobs,” said Nicola.

The couple’s herd on their first dairy farm
The couple’s son, Oakley, arrived 15 months ago, and Nicola has since been on maternity leave, easing the work schedule. She has been onfarm all the time, managing farm work around Oakley. “Oakley got used to being over the farm very quickly, and he loves the farm, which helps,” said Blair. Finding the dairy farming lifestyle fitted in well with raising a family, Blair and Nicola decided to buy a larger farm. “We were lucky with the current farm so close to town. The residential and lifestyle property market was booming, pushing the value of our current farm up.” Their new farm’s potential and location, one kilometre from their current property, were the main drawcards.
Nicola grew up on her family’s 250-cow dairy farm at Mangatoki, developing a love for the lifestyle, animals and outdoors
“We will run about 175 Friesian-cross cows through a 22-bale rotary shed,” said Blair. A base herd was bought from the previous owners of Blair and Nicola’s first dairy farm, building up from there. Ten cows were also leased in their first year on the farm and some cows, and in-calf heifers, from Nicola’s parents. The Childs acknowledge the assistance of different industry professionals who have helped them reach their goal. “Brent Dodunski from McDonald Real Estate has been great to deal with and has done a lot of work with us, with the purchase of both dairy farms, the sale of the run-off, and sale of the first dairy farm,” said Nicola. “We had to change banks. Patrick Taylor from BNZ has been very accepting
and worked very hard to get us on board. Mike Green from Fonterra has been great to deal with and assisted in helping being accepted into the MyMilk scheme for the new farm. “Cody Hall from Grain Corp has been keeping track of our production and feed intake, giving us feedback and advice on different feeds, and what to feed when — to get the most out of our cows.” The couple plan to get the new farm up to a high standard, improving infrastructure and production. “We aren’t afraid of working hard and putting in the hours to get to where we want,” said Nicola.

TRAINING HORSES BEYOND THE BARRIERS BY DENISE GUNN SINCE ESTABLISHING BEYOND THE BARRIERS NZ IN 2014, NICKY WALLACE AND GINA SCHICK HAVE PROMOTED THE VERSATILITY AND SUITABILITY OF RETIRED THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSES, RETRAINED FOR OTHER EQUESTRIAN DISCIPLINES.
Melanie-Jane Jones and her five-year-old gelding Bon Garcon compete in the Paced and Mannered class
T
he concept for the non-profit organisation initially began by holding a showcase event at equine expo Equidays in 2015. “We knew the organiser of the event and signed up to hold a competition there every second year,” said Nicky. Gina said the purpose was to showcase what thoroughbreds could achieve with less than 12 months’ schooling off the racetrack. “We knew these horses were capable of more than they were given credit for.
We wanted to be able to demonstrate this to the equestrian public,” said Nicky. The pair’s involvement with horses and ponies began from a young age. Gina said her parents bought her first pony in an effort to get her head out of her books. With a strong background involvement in Pony Club, particularly in eventing, Gina began breaking in and trading horses. That was in addition to riding trackwork, which helped fund her university tuition.
DRIER. CLEANER. HEALTHIER SOUTH TARANAKI & WANGANUI
“During this time, I came across my first thoroughbred, Ruffy (aka The Felon), who went on to be an exceptional eventer. He can be held responsible for starting my interest in rehoming thoroughbreds off the track.” A few years, and thousands of rehomed thoroughbreds later, Gina met and married Rodney Schick, whose family own Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge. Gina is now involved in the thoroughbred industry as a breeder and owner. She also continues to rehome hundreds of Thoroughbreds each year through her business, EventStars Limited, in Cambridge.
Nicky’s first pony arrived after many years of pleading for one. She was also involved in Pony Club during her school years. While studying agribusiness and equine at Massey University, part of the degree’s requirement was working in an agricultural-based business during the summer holidays. Through a family connection, Nicky found herself completing yearling preparation for the Williams family operation, Little Avondale Stud, in Masterton. “I became a regular fixture at the farm whenever university holidays allowed and worked at yearling sales both in New Zealand and Australia, as well as England.”

Nicky co-founded one of New Zealand’s most successful bloodstock agencies, Waterford Bloodstock. She bred and owned thoroughbreds in New Zealand and Australia, too. With the aim of ensuring suitable homes for every sound thoroughbred, retiring from New Zealand’s racing industry, Gina and Nicky found Equidays to be a perfect promotional platform. Dunstan Horsefeeds came onboard as competition sponsors, and 14 riders were invited to compete. The competition, restricted to retired thoroughbred racehorses with less than 12 months’ schooling prior to the competition, was held as a freestyle format during Equidays. “The event drew huge crowds,” said Gina. “There was such a range of performances; beautifully prepared show horses, well-schooled eventing horses, western and tricks, which involved balloons and fire. “It was such a hit with the organisers that they immediately asked us to come back again the following year, and we agreed.” The Dunstan Ex-Factor competition has since attracted competitors from all across New Zealand. “Sarah Brosnahan and Jon Smyth from Taranaki are regular faces in the competition. “They often acquire horses with the aim of competing,” said Gina. All the work put into Beyond the Barriers is voluntary, with Gina and Nicky taking care of the majority of planning and organising. A core team of volunteers, Miranda Horton, Josie Ireland-Keir, Tara Hughes, Kelsey Leahy and Jonty Schick, help implement their plans.

Beyond the Barriers team is a core group of volunteers who help out every year to ensure Dunstan Ex-Factor runs smoothly
“The key event in our calendar every year is the Dunstan Ex-Factor competition, and we complete various clinics and do a lot of promotion through social media outside of this,” said Nicky. In recent years, the pair worked with NZ Racing to ensure reporting systems used are effective, providing the industry with accurate data surrounding the rehoming of thoroughbreds in New Zealand. “We look forward to seeing the results of the improvements in traceability in the near future.” Gina and Nicky appreciate receiving feedback about retired thoroughbreds enjoying life and providing riders with pleasure in their chosen field.
“Whether that be winning four-star events or going out for a hack on the beach.” To ensure the longevity of the organisation, Beyond the Barriers needs to secure further funding to reduce reliance on volunteers.

STUDENTS HAVE SHARE OF SUCCESS by Denise Gunn A team of top shearers from New Plymouth Boys’ High School demonstrated their shearing prowess during the inaugural Secondary Schools Shearing Championships, earning a third placing.
T
he competition, focussing on rookies, was a new event at the recent Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Games. It was also the first time a shearing competition for secondary schools had been held in New Zealand. NPBHS head of the agri-science department, Lizaan Hale, was the team’s manager and coordinator. She said as some of the school’s students took part in shearing competitions throughout the year, it was decided to create a team for the rural games. Team members, which included four shearers and one wool handler, were selected during trials on a sheep farm in Whangamomona. All of the team members are boarders at NPBHS.

With their father, Mark, running Barrowcliffe Shearing, the pair was introduced to shearing at a young age; Topia at age nine and Tana at 11. Both boys had previously entered shearing competitions, with 16-year-old Topia competing in the Golden Shears. Reuben and Samuel Pease are also brothers, living on a 4,500-acre sheep and beef farm near Whangamomona. At the age of 15, Reuben was introduced to shearing and has been given tips and guidance by several people. He now shears his own sheep. Samuel, 16, began shearing last year and was the team’s wool handler. The championship was the first competition the pair had

entered. Fourteen-year-old Joel Burton was the youngest team member. His father, Charlie, manages Mackintosh Shearing in the King Country and taught Joel to shear when he was younger. Joel began shearing in earnest during September last year. The Year 11 student has previously entered shearing competitions, so knew what to expect. All of the team members have set sights on shearing careers and longterm ambitions to own farms. In the lead-up to the Secondary Schools Shearing Championships, the students practised individually, most weekends. They also benefitted from a training day with Mark Barrowcliffe. All of the boys work in shearing sheds during school holidays too. In the championships, two shearers from each team were on the board at the same time, shearing a sheep each. When shearing was completed, judges looked for wool left on the sheep and cuts. Points were awarded on workmanship, and teams were also timed. The team with the fewest faults, fastest time and most points won the competition. The top individual shearer, 17-yearold Michael Buick of Rathkeale College in Masterton, was awarded a trophy donated by Sir David Fagan and his family. Michael’s father, David, is a New
Zealand representative and has won numerous shearing titles. The winning school, Rathkeale College, took home a trophy donated by the reigning Golden Shears and New Zealand champion shearer, Rowland Smith, and his family. Feilding High School took second place. Napier Boys’ High School, Whanganui Collegiate and Palmerston North Boys’ High School also competed. Feilding High School agricultural science teacher Kain Nixon organised the event. New Zealand’s most decorated sheep shearer, Sir David Fagan, welcomed the championship. He hopes it will help get young people excited about shearing. “It really is a fantastic lifestyle and career option.” Lizaan said NPBHS is very proud of the boys, especially as competitive shearing is new to a large part of the team. “They really upheld the school’s motto of ‘be the example’.” A crowd of close to 42,000 people attended the three-day rural games held in The Square, Te Marae o Hine, Palmerston North, watching athletes compete across a range of rural sports. “It was a fantastic weekend for rural sports,” said New Zealand Rural Games founder Steve Hollander.

Although Tobi intends to develop a consulting business, he will continue to work with the firm at their headquarters at 365 Ketemarae Road, Hawera 4675. Liam is also the managing director of a Whanganui computer firm, Rapidweb Networks. Liam says the new venture “is a way to build and grow” the service he can provide between the two fairly close geographical sites to the mutual benefit of clients in both places. It will be the same quality sales and service and would still be local. When Liam and Tobi met for the first time, there was an instant personal rapport between the two. The two men spoke the same ethical language. “I wasn’t prepared to sell 4U Computer Solutions to just anyone. It had to be the right person with the same ethics and responsibility, someone prepared to look after my customers in an ethical way,” said Tobi. “Our customers and the firm are like a big family.” Liam says he’s unlikely to make big changes but will continue the high standards and breadth of options that Tobi has established for both commercial and residential clients.

Old batteries raise new funds Waitara Lions Club has put a call out for the collection of old vehicle batteries as one of their fundraising schemes. The collection not only provides an effective solution to safely disposing and recycling the batteries; it also helps groups and individuals in the community. Helping osteoarthritis: Chondroitin sulphate by John Arts, Abundant Health
A significant research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of high-grade CS is the most important natural compound to help joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months, the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance
of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is, how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. This comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. For questions or advice, contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his allnew newsletter at abundant.co.nz.

F I E L D DAY S T O T H E M A I L B OX
Celebrating the spirit of the days
and those who support them were quite impressed by one of our ideas in the print industry; the concept of all the big deals and savings of an old-fashioned field day in your mailbox. That’s why we’ve brought it back for a second round. Think of this as an augmentation to the action happening in the Waikato this June, perhaps even an excuse to grab a good deal closer to home. Within a very short time, we’ll forget the little hardships which Covid brought. Moreover, we’ll remember the things we learned for the better.
by Andy Bryenton
When farmers first came to New Zealand, one of the first things they established on the annual calendar was the concept of an A&P show; a place to share their successes and indulge a little friendly rivalry. With some of these days now entrenched in history and going strong for 14 decades or more, it’s fair to say that the idea of a gathering of farmers was a success. However, in 1969 a greater concept emerged; the idea of a national day bringing the town and country together and introducing new innovations in rural technology. That first ‘town and country fair’ was popular indeed, and the big day in Hamilton rolled on with changes and challenges up until 2020, when Covid-19 stopped it, along with most other big outdoor get-togethers, in its tracks. Here’s the thing about Kiwi farmers and farming businesses, though. We’re not easily daunted even by the worst of troubles. When the inability to share innovations, celebrate new inventions, explore new options, discuss new science and test new machines were taken away from a central arena, we adapted. Last year, as Covid lockdown froze the rest of the country, farms kept working. At the same time, we found other ways of getting the message out to farmers about new, better, more profitable ways to operate, coming out of Covid stronger.
