Thomas Young participated in the 2019 youth camp
Organised by Holstein Friesian New Zealand, the camp is designed to teach participants how to prepare a heifer for a show, with tutorials on clipping, judging, handling, nutrition and showmanship. Holstein Friesian New Zealand field officer Amelia Griffin said the demonstrations would all be really practical and hands-on. “Each student will be assigned their own heifer so they can prepare the animal for a mini show.” The National All Dairy Breeds Youth Camp is open to young people between the ages of 10 to 21. “The camp is open to anyone. Participants don’t have to be from a farm or a member of a breed society,” said Amelia. “They just have to be interested in showing dairy cattle and learning more about animal behaviour, handling and care.” Attendees vie for the Paramount Cup, which is awarded to the top-performing Holstein Friesian New Zealand youth member at the camp. The trophy has previously been awarded to a Waikato teenager who wasn’t off a farm but was passionate about dairy cattle.
“An important part of the camp will be a dinner held with Taranaki Holstein Friesian NZ members,” said Amelia. “It will provide a fantastic opportunity for attendees to connect with local dairy farmers who may need a hand showing their cattle.” The Taranaki branch of Holstein Friesian New Zealand has generously donated $2,000 towards the camp. “It’s a great way for us to give back and support young people to grow their knowledge and confidence around cattle,” said branch president Jamie Taylor. “It’s rare to have an event of this calibre on our back doorstep. I’d urge Taranaki residents to make the most of it and sign up.” Taranaki Holstein Friesian studs will provide cattle for participants to care for during the camp. The youth camp has also received sponsorship from CRV Ambreed, Bell Booth, LIC, G&M Wood, Holstein International and Semex. The camp is to be held at the Stratford A&P Showgrounds from January 10 to 13 2020. Registrations are taken at nzholstein.org.nz.

Championing the best of rural sports

by Denise Gunn
Rural sports organisations are called on to get nominations in for the 2020 Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards. The awards honour athletes as well as the volunteers and administrators who make their sports possible. While the sports are varied, the Sir Brian Lochore Memorial Award for outstanding sportsperson from a rural background, sponsored by Allflex, honours an outstanding New Zealand athlete from a rural background and involved in any sports code. This award, named for the late Sir Brian Lochore, acknowledges the extra challenges faced by elite athletes from rural backgrounds, including lack of facilities, lack of coaching, and the immense distances travelled to train and compete. Introduced in 2019 the award was first presented to Sarah Hirini in recognition of her success as a women’s rugby player, captain of the Black Ferns and past Golden Shears finalist. Other winners at this year’s awards were young cowboy shooter Bradley McDowell, champion fencer Tony Bouskill, master woolhandler Pagan Karauria, tree-climbing administrator and judge David James, and veteran shearer Hugh McCarroll. Convenor of judges and former Olympic rower Nathan Twaddle is excited about next year’s awards. “I know every rural sports nominee has a passion for their sport and is

They are outstanding Kiwi shearers, tree climbers, fencers, riders, woodchoppers and administrators, and I am sure 2020 will be no different. We are a rural company, our heart is in

the country, and it is a privilege to be able to champion our rural athletes and sports codes.” Nominations for the 2020 awards close 4pm on Friday, January 17 2020, and finalists will be announced in February 2020. The awards will be presented at a gala function on Friday, March 13, 2020, prior to the New Zealand Rural Games celebration in Palmerston North. TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
Loving their fields of lavender by Denise Gunn During the past 20 years, Rex Hendry has developed his Egmont Village property into a productive patch of land.
R
ex initially used the land for casual grazing and to make hay. Five years later, when Rex was stood down from full-time work, he converted the paddock to grow lavender and garlic. With garlic as the main crop, the lavender provided a windbreak. “I was planting and harvesting between 18,000 to 24,000 garlic bulbs per year,” said Rex. “Gradually, the product range for the lavender was developed as the plants grew, and more oil became available.” Rex’s partner, Sally Johnson, joined him on the property 10 years ago. During the 2016/17 season, the couple lost their entire garlic crop due to fungus. As the main income from the property, this was a major setback for the business. “Unfortunately there is no national fund for failed garlic crops, so you’ve just
got to take the punches, pick yourself up and get on with the next stage of development for the property and try and get ahead of the trends — climate and market.” Rex said when he first started growing garlic 15 years ago, three or four weeks of hard frosts during winter were ideal for planting. “This was good for the garlic cycle. We now haven’t had a frost on the property for three or four years. Plus the springs, which used to finish the garlic in fine, dry weather, have gradually become overcast and damp — ideal for fungus growth.” Research for replacement crops led Rex to find what grew best in Scotland. “I think this is the most likely climate for the west coast of the North Island going forward — maybe a bit warmer

Last year, Rex and Sally began growing native trees for sale at markets than Scotland.” Rex ripped out the existing lavender plants, 700 each of Lavandula Grosso and Lavandula Super, which needed replacing as well as the garlic beds. He replaced the 1,400 lavender plants with 200 of the Grosso variety. “I have a stock of oil, which will last for several years as the production of the new plants increase.” The couple planted 86 citrus trees, 40 apples and pear trees, and 90 metres of raspberries too. “We also grow tea on the property, and last year, I started growing New Zealand native plants for sale at the markets.” Rex and Sally began growing a range of mint and mixed herbal teas. Gradually they pulled this back to green and black tea, along with a more select range of herbal mixes. Generally, Rex performs the day-to-day tasks, but during the
harvest periods and markets, Sally steps in to help. “One or other of the five children between us helps out occasionally when I manage to pressgang them into some work,” he said. In February, the lavender is harvested and distilled. The couple now has their own distiller on-site but previously harvested and trucked the lavender to a large distiller in Stratford. “We used to harvest around 600– 800kgs of flowerheads when we had 1,400 plants. Now there are around 50kgs of flowerheads; this will grow to about 150–200kgs per annum when the plants get bigger.” Under the label LoveLavender, all of Rex and Sally’s products are available online at lovelavender.co.nz. The couple also sells their products at two markets in New Plymouth — the Seaside Market
Rows of Lavandula Grosso at Ngamotu Beach and Farmers’ Market Taranaki. Rex said developing their products from the ground up, and through the various stages to selling, has been a rewarding business highlight. He said customers appreciate knowing where the products have come from, who is doing what to them, and how they are made and produced. “A lot of the discussions over the market table are about the processes
and what goes into the products. I have learned to make virtually all of the products in the last 15 years and only put in good things, avoiding any nasties.” With retirement on the horizon, Rex and Sally are currently preparing their property to list on the market. “I retire at the end of the year, and we are looking to the next stage of our lives,” said Rex.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
Family farm for generations by Denise Gunn Glen Nui Station, in eastern Taranaki, has been in the hands of the Francis family for the past 82 years.
T
he 2,024ha (480ha effective) hill country property, which borders Lake Rotorangi, was initially settled in the early 1900s. During the next 30 years, the farm was further developed through the efforts of all those who worked on it. In 1929, with the Great Depression looming, Glen Nui’s owners were forced to walk off the farm. All of the hard work put into developing the station was lost as the land reverted to scrub. The station was then acquired by Christchurch financial and solicitor firm Rhodes, Ross and Godsby. It remained untouched until Hubert (Bert) and Mary Francis arrived on the property in 1937. The couple managed the farm for 25 years before Bert, in partnership with his son Jack, bought the property. Jack
and his wife Jeanette raised their four children Anne, Jane, Pene and Matthew on Glen Nui. Following Bert’s death, the couple took ownership in 1989. In 2006, Matthew and Jackie entered into a lease/partnership with Jeanette and took over full management of the property. The couple and their two children, Jack, 14, and Anna-Victoria, 12, are actively involved in the community. Jackie teaches part-time at Rawhitiroa School, and Matthew holds the position of Eltham-Takau Dog Trial Club vice president, liberator and cookshop organiser with Jackie as secretary. They are also involved with a range of community events at the local hall. Glen Nui currently runs 1,700 breeding ewes, 525 hoggets, 100 breeding cows and 30 heifers. “The ewe

A new woolshed is one of many improvements to the farm flock is Romney, but with a change to Romdale rams over the last few years, we are starting to see the benefit of a more hardy type sheep with a benefit of increased lambing percentage,” said Jackie. “Early lambs are sent straight to the works from late November on, with the majority of remaining lambs sent off the property store before Christmas. All male calves and non-replacement are sold at the autumn calf sales, straight off the cow. As the property develops, more heifers are being kept to increase herd numbers.” Dairy stock is also grazed but will be scaled back as the property develops and the family’s own stock numbers increase. Beekeepers tending between 800–1,000 beehives in the station’s manuka-covered ridges during summer
have added an extra income stream to the property. Jackie said summer temperatures in eastern Taranaki hill country could reach into the 30s as heat is trapped in the gullies. “In the winter, we often experience heavy fogs that can, at times, hang around until late morning. Our annual rainfall is between 1,900mm– 2,000mm.” Newer grass species are replacing traditional pasture on Glen Nui, and up to 10ha of hay and silage is cut each year. Turnip and rape crops were introduced for fattening lambs. “Glen Nui is currently run in a fairly traditional and extensive farming pattern. As we continue to develop the land and infrastructure, we are implementing more modern practices. Development of fencing, water access, fertiliser,
Friends and family relax after helping out on the farm laneways and a new woolshed has been extensive in the last 10 years.” The 119-year-old woolshed, with names of shearers who have passed through adorning the walls, still stands. In addition to a team of professional farming consultants, the Francis family has a group of friends who help out on Glen Nui during the busier times. For the past six years, the family have had T-shirts and singlets produced to give to their workers. Five years ago, building on the tourism opportunities surrounding Lake Rotorangi, Matthew and Jackie transformed an empty house into a lodge. The lodge sleeps up to 11 people,
and a sleep-out accommodates larger groups. Within a week of listing Glen Nui Lodge on Bookabach, the first booking came in, and demand has been fairly solid since. During the last few years, the couple has also let out another bach down the back end of the farm. The introduction of a Glen Nui Grunter trail bike ride across a 36km bulldozed loop on the station has proven popular too. The couple plan to continue building the visitor client base and tourism sector around the lake. “We decided to be diverse in our farm practices and work on finding new avenues for revenue.”

arming and livestock have featured in Nigel’s life since he was a youngster. “I was born and bred on a farm in coastal Taranaki,” he said. Initially settling on a dairy farm career, Nigel and his wife Pauline worked their way up to purchase a 79ha dairy farm in 2006, milking 200 Friesian cows. Seven years later Nigel and Pauline sold the dairy farm to buy a 42ha block of land and lease a further 10ha on the outskirts of Hawera. They now rear 250–300 calves each spring, winter 190 cows and graze 40 dairy heifers from May to May. Approximately 25ha of silage and 25ha of hay is produced annually on the block and sold.
“Once the dairy cows have grazed, that’s when it gets shut up for silage,” said Nigel. Selling the dairy farm also allowed Nigel to follow his vocation. He began working as a livestock agent and found helping young couples into their first herd was one of the job highlights. In 2015, Nigel took up employment as a livestock representative for ANZCO. ANZCO Foods, formerly CMP and Riverlands, is one of New Zealand’s largest exporters with seven beef and lamb processing sites across the nation. A keen eye for livestock, coupled with decades of experience in the agricultural industry gives Nigel the expertise required for the job. He covers

the southern Taranaki area from Pihama down to Waverley. Canvassing farmers and building a solid client base, along with continually following the market, forms a large part of Nigel’s job. “It depends on the time of year, a lot of it is getting out and about and talking to farmers.” Nigel said keeping in touch with farmers is essential and an aspect of the job he thoroughly enjoys. “I have some good chats with farmers. When they are ready to cull stock, they give you a call. Obviously through the bobby season it’s busier; pre-season and getting farmers to fill in forms, and delivering bobby tags. That takes up to two and a half months to complete. We get that going by the end of March/early April.

“Around 99% of my clients are dairy farmers, so I try to work in with them.” One of the biggest challenges Nigel faces occurs during dry conditions. “Trying to move people’s stock for them when they want to move it, especially through times of drought. When it gets dry, everybody wants to get rid of stock.” Occasionally, Nigel receives a phone call from clients to cancel a trip to the works for their animals. “Some people get attached to their animals, and then ring up and cancel, pet cows and beefies — just before sending to the works.” As Nigel is usually away from the house and on the road by 8am, he tries to keep his farm easy to run.
Nigel and Pauline now rear 250–300 calves each spring
Weekends are busy on the farm, trying to get organised for the coming week. Nigel is often working on the farm in the evenings after finishing his day’s work too. However, despite a busy schedule, Nigel and Pauline take time out whenever possible to enjoy fishing, launching their boat from either Opunake or Urenui. “We have some good snapper days,” said Nigel.

Building for your future Do you want a safer, healthier home for your family or a retirement nest egg, sustainable, built from the best quality materials and that will last you a lifetime? “That’s what we wanted for our family, so we went out of our way to create it,” says owner Isiah Reynolds; and, that is how Green Homes Taranaki was born. Isiah Reynolds does not simply build houses. With a passion for sustainable, energy-efficient homes — Isiah Reynolds is well-known in the community as an award-winning builder and green home ‘guru’. That is why every home he builds is well above standard building requirements, and he sets out to achieve a six Homestar rating on each build. “Building healthier, lower running cost homes that cater to all walks of life and for all abilities is part of our core ethos, which is why we’ve partnered with Lifemark. With the New Plymouth District Council recently committing to becoming an age-friendly city we are here to improve local living standards.” Isiah is also the qualified Homestar professional within his organisation and can advise further if you want to build as energy efficiently and sustainably as possible. Green Homes NZ is also the only residential builder in the country to be internationally compliant for energy efficiency (ISO 50001).” As experts in their field, they are here to educate and work with clients to make the best possible decisions, from building materials right through to interior design. With green products gaining popularity, there’s a lot of innovations available,

be rest assured the team has done their research to source superior options for their clients. Aiming to build their homes perfectly for each environment, they ensure the thermal envelope is up to our local conditions, meaning a warmer home overall from the foundation upwards. With the current building code, there is a general ‘one size fits all’ approach, which is not the case with Green Homes. Building just a home won’t cut it with Green Homes Taranaki, they believe in exceeding the building code resulting in a warmer, drier, efficient home that really performs in all seasons.

Kiwi farms follow a calendar dictated by Mother Nature, not Father Christmas. So most veteran farmers know all too well the big squeeze that can occur in late November and early December, but it’s worth taking a look at what those trades professionals say when it comes to getting advice about having a happier holiday. “We’re here to help anytime, but our suppliers might not be.” That is a call to come in and stock up soon while it’s still possible, on those things, which may break or wear out during the festive season. While many reputable plumbers, electricians, mechanics and machinery repair technicians carry lots of generic and common parts, obscure and offshore sourced pieces can be hard to obtain during the holidays. Part of this is shipping, and part is that other nations take different amounts of time off on different days than we do. Get in now to order replacement parts, and don’t leave an ‘iffy’ or ‘on the way out’ problem to blossom into a disaster when it’s tough to get suppliers on the phone. “Big projects are best left until the fresh new year, not rushed.” It is a common answer from those in the trades, who often see demands for seasonal must-haves like air-con coming in at the last second. It’s often hard to tell a determined customer that they have missed the boat, but it’s a fine thing to be first on the books for the new year. If it can wait until January, why rush

things before Christmas? Take it easy, and good summer weather will still be with us for your project’s groundbreaking in 2020. “Don’t be shy — call out if it’s a real emergency!” Those in the trades and professions know that it’s a 24/7 job out on the land. For the most part, businesses respect the fact that their rural callers are not in the habit of
making frivolous demands on their time. Though they often say it with a wry smile, most tradespeople really are happy to help their neighbours on Christmas and New Year or any time. If it’s going to impact your family or business, they want you to call, and they understand that it’s no one’s fault that the unexpected can happen on any day of the year.

What’s up with turmeric? by John Arts
My motorcycle tour in India in a few years ago was a feast for my senses including, of course, my taste buds. Most curry recipes contain the brilliant yellow spice turmeric. It has been a mainstay of Indian Ayurvedic medicine where it is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-supporting qualities. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. I have many clients who have benefitted from curcumin often to calm tissue affected by inflammation. One client had a troublesome Baker’s cyst behind his knee. Taking my Curcumin product has greatly reduced swelling and discomfort. A study titled Curcumin: a new paradigm and therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of osteoarthritis (Henrotin, 2013) investigated the application of curcumin in osteoarthritis. The study concluded, “curcumin represents a new paradigm since it is not yet a recommended intervention in osteoarthritis but should be considered based on its safety and efficacy.” The study outlines the impact of curcumin on anti-inflammatory pathways, including inhibiting
inflammatory enzyme COX-2. This is the target of most anti-inflammatory drugs, and while effective, these come with a range of often side effects. I use a standardised extract of 95% curcumin extract and have created a proprietary blend to improve curcumin absorption into damaged joints and tissue. The normal daily dose of two capsules daily gives 1,000mg of this high potency extract. This is equivalent to about a tablespoon of raw turmeric. This is especially effective when combined with high potency grape seed extract. I use curcumin mostly for joint support and wherever tissue is affected by inflammation. Contact me for an email copy of my Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his all-new newsletter at abundant.co.nz.
Simplifying freshwater consultation DairyNZ is encouraging dairy farmers to get their submissions in now on the proposed Essential Freshwater Package, and there is a template online to make it easier. Submissions are due on the government’s Essential Freshwater package by October 31. Dairy farmers are encouraged to get involved by making a submission online through the Ministry for the Environment website or using DairyNZ’s submission template as a starting point. Dair yNZ strategy and investment leader Dr David Burger said the template is based on DairyNZ’s initial position on the government’s proposals and was created in response to farmer request. “The template provides a basis for farmers to make a submission on the Essential Freshwater Package. It is a good starting point and can be personalised by farmers, as the real value is in them — adding how it will affect them and their farm business,” said Dr Burger. Dr David Burger, DairyNZ strategy and investment leader “It is important farmers are involved in this submission process. We hard on that detail, which includes an encourage farmers to tell their side of economic impact analysis and farmer the story, such as what they are already feedback too, but farmer submissions doing on-farm to protect water quality or are just as important. We encourage how proposed changes will personally dairy farmers to get involved in the submission process and encourage all impact them.” Farmers can make a submission by their colleagues, neighbours and dairy using the DairyNZ template available at farmer friends to do so too. “We only have one chance to dairynz.co.nz/freshwater or direct to the Ministry for the Environment. DairyNZ influence the outcome, and it is through is making a submission on behalf of the submission process. It is important dairy farmers and will be providing a that our collective voice is heard.” DairyNZ’s submission template summary of that technical and economic and initial position on the Essential submission before October 31. “Our water quality scientists, policy Freshwater Package is available online experts and economists are working at dairynz.co.nz/freshwater.

Umbilical hits the right chord by Andy Bryenton
As restrictions and rules tighten around the storage and spreading of effluent on the farm, traditional methods of handling large volumes of the messy stuff and turning it into valuable fertiliser may not be up to the challenge. Technology is keeping pace with change, and there are new options on the table for managing those ponds. Not so long ago it was only the pasture close into the shed, which was utilised to spread out effluent as fertiliser. Then came the slurry tanker. Still a very viable option for smaller ponds or operations, but time-consuming to operate when large distances, a solo tractor and significant volumes of slurry are involved. The discussion has evolved to a two-way race for many on the land between mobile irrigators and the umbilical system, which uses a specially configured tractor to move large volumes from the ponds and disperse them with a set of dribble bars. There are advantages to each method. One of the critical components to success in spreading slurry is the time between application and when stock can be safely returned to the area. Those who advocate for the umbilical system, in which the tractor is tethered via a very long, high-volume hose, cite quicker turnaround, thanks to the way the dribble bar method disperses finer droplets. Those who favour the irrigators cite the one-off investment in infrastructure and the ability to reposition and walk away. Both will tell you that, opposed to hauling a full tanker over pasture and races, their methods of choice reduce damage and compaction. Perhaps the decider is throughput and the fact that some farmers do not want to have to make that capital outlay in the first place. With modern
Umbilical slurry and effluent management systems are coming into their own as new rules and regulations foster change
umbilical systems shifting 200 to 300 cubic metres of slurry for each hour, there’s less necessity to deploy the system during the seasonal round of rural chores. It’s something that some contractors specialise in, so it’s possible to completely outsource the management and spreading of effluent to a professional third party. That’s a thought with mass appeal when one considers the demands of staying within the rules, purchasing the relevant machinery, maintaining it and also finding time to fit what’s traditionally thought of as a dirty job into the schedule. Of course, the umbilical system is not right for every farm. Nevertheless,
it’s possibly one, which will see much more use as scrutiny on effluent
management makes increasingly necessary.
