SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Ron Simpson of Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Rural women play role in lowering quad accidents

Quad bike accidents — the biggest cause of on-farm injuries and deaths in New Zealand — are not solely a male domain. By Annette Lambly-Robinson

L

ast year two women were killed in farming quad bike accidents. A 62 year old woman was killed on her property in Kaikohe, while a young farm worker was killed near Westport.

Over the past eight years seven women have lost their lives in quad accidents on farms and every year, on average, five farmers are killed and 850 are injured. The accidents incur an ACC bill of around $7 million a year, and leave a legacy of loss, debilitation and pain. The Dairy Women’s Network is working with the Department of Labour to increase the quad skills levels of dairy farming women. This month (November) the organisation is using its popular Dairy Days as a way to get the message out about safer riding. “More women than ever are involved in the dairy industry, often as heavily as their male counterparts and the impact that death and injury has on rural families and businesses is simply too great to ignore,” says Dairy Women’s Network chief executive Sarah Speight.

Women attending any of the Dairy Days held nationwide November 8 — 30 will have the opportunity to improve quad riding knowledge. “They will leave with more knowledge on the key principles of quad bike operation, along with information on quad regulations to pass on to staff back at the farm,” said Ms Speight. “The impact of a death or injury on a farm from a quad bike is personal, social and economic. Anything that helps reduce these effects has to be good for the farm, and for the industry,” she said. Ag ITO advisor Graeme Couper is one of the 10 instructors who will be providing hands-on tips to improve quad bike riding skills. He believes women are often more open to improving their skill set, and play a vital role in passing those skills on to other staff. “They may not be riding as frequently, (as the men) but when they do, they may be in challenging situations, such as towing calf milk — which can challenge your skills and the quad’s ability.

“We also hope to highlight the need for good, ongoing quad maintenance programmes,” he said. The Department of Labour is one year into an initiative aimed at reducing the level of accidents on quad bikes, and the campaign comes with four key messages — always wear a helmet, keep children off quads, train staff correctly and use the right machine for the job. It aims to reduce quad bike accidents by 30% by 2013. Department head of harm reduction Francois Barton said working with the Dairy Women’s Network reflected the valuable role women can play in improving quad bike safety on their own farms. “We know they are often the influencers on the farm and we believe they can help reduce death and injury by the way they ride quad bikes,” he said.

The department intends to have some of the inspectors from its team present at the Dairy Days, providing information on the quad bike safety campaign and the seasonal farm inspection currently underway. Inspectors will be explaining the outcomes of these visits, which can include a range of enforcement options from written warnings, improvement notices and prosecution. Dairy Days will be held in Taranaki on November 15 at Coopers Farm, 24 Oru Rd, Stratford 10am-2pm. Pre registration is vital. The international trompe l’oeil artist John Pugh unveiled his latest work, ‘Waterway’ at the opening of the Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular on October 28. by Annette Lambly-Robinson

T

he trompe l’oeil (meaning trick of the eye) artwork measures approximately 18 metres long by four metres high and is created on a wall in the inner city Huatoki Plaza. The artwork which creates the illusion of a garden plaza within the existing Huatoki Plaza is already proving a hit with the locals, says the Californian based artist. “Over the last 30 years I’ve created trompe l’oeil all around the world but I have never had so much positive public feedback as I have had creating this work,” says Mr Pugh. The piece depicts a vivid, pink flowering rhododendron tree in the foreground with a winding pathway meandering past streams and ponds that link it to the actual Huatoki stream running directly beneath the work. In the background a tiled mural of a southern aspect of Mt. Taranaki is framed by a red-leafed maple in the mid-ground — it creates the illusion of a pathway leading into another plaza. “This mural has really taken on a life of its own. I hope it will be thought provoking for locals and visitors,” said Mr Pugh.

Mr Pugh was assisted in the work by Rotorua ar tist, Mark Spijkerbosch. Created using colourfast paints and protected by an acrylic overlay, the mural should maintain its vibrant colours for many years to come, says the Spectacular’s manager, Lisa Haskell. The annual ten-day Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular (formerly the Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival) is one of New Zealand’s longestrunning garden festivals. It showcases some of New Zealand’s most stunning private and public gardens. Now in its 24th year this year’s event opened 50 gardens to the public. It offered a spectacular range of gardens and events, arriving just as the flowers were blossoming and bursting with colour. Visitors enjoyed strolling through large country parks, intimate inner city potagers, sub-tropical and rainforest gardens, historical and family gardens, or experiencing an extensive programme

In 1999, while in America, Vaughan decided he wanted more from a rocking chair — one that provided a smoother ride, with less friction. His vision was to create the “most relaxing chair one could ever sit in.’’ After all who needed a chair to relax in at the end of a hard day more than a man whose performed back-breaking work for a living.

Scholarships encourage a future in sheep and beef farming

Two young New Zealanders are pursuing their dream of working in the sheep and beef industry, thanks to a helping hand from Beef + Lamb New Zealand scholarships.

E

ach year, B+LNZ offers scholarship support to one or two young people wanting to study at Taratahi Agricultural Training College — through either one scholarship of $4,000, or two of $2,000. This year’s recipients are Cologne McKinstry and Nicholas Fabish, who are both in their second year of study at Taratahi. Nick is from a dairy farm in the Taranaki and arrived at Taratahi in 2009 to study dairying. But he found himself drawn to the sheep and beef course and this year is studying towards his Level 4 Certificate in Agriculture. “I’ve taken the opportunity and it’s going awesome. I like getting up in the hills and, at the moment, I’m working at Kaituna, near the Tararuas.” The farmer has offered Nick a job at the end of his course and he has jumped at the chance. He’s also thinking about further study at Lincoln, but with two dogs and a third on

Cologne McKinstry and Nicholas Fabish

the horizon, he says he’ll need to think carefully about his plans. Cologne is in her second year of study at Taratahi, also studying towards her Level 4 Certificate in Agriculture. “I was only 15 when I left school and had no qualifications, which I didn’t think was a good idea. I come from a small farm near Taumarunui and thought I’d study agriculture.” Now 17, Cologne has not looked back and was top of her class (of about 70 students) at Taratahi last year — the first female to take the top spot. She has a job lined up for later this year, then plans to go to Australia to try her hand at cattle driving. Near the top of her wish list is to work on the large Canterbury station, Molesworth, before ultimately returning home and setting up a Perendale stud with her father, Chris. She is grateful for the scholarship, particularly given her young age. “The Beef + Lamb New Zealand scholarship is really important. Because of my age, I’m too young to get a student allowance.”

In the meantime, Nick and Cologne were part of a 19-student study group that recently travelled to the UK as part of a Taratahi-organised tour of alternative farming systems. Cologne says it was an eye opener. “It was an amazing experience and we made a lot of good contacts. Everything was so different. It really opens your eyes to how lucky we are here in New Zealand, with regard to rules and regulations.” Both students also spent two days in Wellington at Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s head office recently, where they heard from industry professionals and met 19 other B+LNZ scholarship students from all over New Zealand. B+LNZ chief executive Scott Champion says the scholarships are a long-standing part of Beef + Lamb’s people programme. “Over the years, we’ve supported many young people through Taratahi, not to mention the university-level scholarships and Telford in the south. We are constantly delighted to see these individuals pursue their dream of working in agriculture and feel a pride, as they progress through both their education, then career paths.” Applications for the scholarships open in November each year and close in March. Details can be found at www.beefandlamb.com.

Lifetime achievement award for Sir William Gallagher Sir William Gallagher’s contribution to the New Zealand dairy sector has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award. by Annette-Lambly Robinson

S

ir William was presented with the award at the launch of the 2012 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards competitions on September 27 at Gordonton. It is only the second time this award has been presented — retired Massey University professor Colin Holmes was the inaugural recipient in 2009. At 69, Sir William is considered one of New Zealand’s most astute businessmen. He chairs the Gallagher group — a family owned, Hamilton based

exporter of animal management, fencing and security systems. He is a natural leader, whose communication skills and business influence is nationally and internationally recognised. NZDI trust’s chair Barbara Kuriger “We selected Sir William for this award because he took a proud, iconic New Zealand company and succeeded with it internationally. His company’s contribution to New Zealand farming systems has been huge.” “He has created a work environment

that encourages personal empowerment and independent thinking. A true entrepreneur, he has a sense of urgency and controlled risk taking, which is supported and managed by the positive team he works with,” Mrs Kuriger said. In presenting the award she said Sir William was a man who placed a strong emphasis on ethics and integrity in both his professional and personal dealings. “He is viewed by the trustees as an outstanding New Zealander and a fine example to current and prospective business people.”

Married to Judi, the Gallaghers live in Hamilton. They have three adult children and are proud grandparents. Sir William was knighted in this year’s New Year’s honours for services to business. It is the third honour to be bestowed — he received an MBE in 1987 and was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998. He was also awarded the Queen’s Commemorative Medal for Services to New Zealand in 1990. In 2008 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Waikato and in 1996 he was the winner of the prestigious Excellence in Communication Leadership

award, the first time since its beginning in 1961 that the award had gone outside North America. Sir William has a strong and active commitment to the environment he lives and works in. He is a major sponsor of the Rescue Helicopter, Waikato Stadium, Mounted Police, Gallagher Family Hospice, Gallagher Hockey Centre and the establishment of the Performing Arts centre at Waikato. Bill Junior — (now Sir William) joined the Gallagher Group’s shop floor fresh out of university in 1962 and he along with his brother John (who left the company in 1997 but is still a shareholding director) have grown the company to what it is today — a multinational, multifaceted $100 million export company employing 1,000 people globally. From fences they have expanded into access control, security fencing and injection-moulded plastics. Their technology is in 130 countries, keeping prisoners locked up in the United States and elephants corralled in Africa. There is even Gallagher security fencing around Buckingham Palace. The world leading company has factories the world over and 70 percent of their products are exported.

How it all began… the history behind the Gallagher Group Back in the 1930s it’s doubtful Waikato farmer Bill Gallagher knew what ‘wiring’ his car to stop the family horse Joe from using is as a scratching post would lead to — he was really just looking for a solution to breaking Joe’s annoying habit. For Bill Gallagher Senior setting up an electric circuit to his car was a farmer’s approach to solving the problem. Bill was a bit of an inventor — he built homemade tractors — he fitted his first old car with iron-shod cleated wheels that pulled a roller to flatten scrub that was then burnt — a practical solution to help work his undeveloped farm. After reading the Americans were using electrified wire to hold stock in, in 1937 Bill Gallagher made his first electric fence. He originally used mains power to power the fence, but this was deemed illegal by the authorities and was disconnected. Undaunted Bill turned to batteries and Ford coils and continued developing and experimenting on his own farm until he had a pretty good product, albeit one that was only effective in small

areas, it was very competitive on the market of the day. In 1938 he formed the Gallagher Company which grew into a ‘10 man business’. In 1961 the law regarding main power supply was changed and the electric fence as we know it today was born. Continuing with ground breaking technology and what began as a visionary alternative to the conventional fencing of the day, the company has grown into fully integrated animal management systems, offering not only electric fences, but weighing and electronic identification systems.

“At Avonstour — using heritage breeds on organic soil we achieve a higher stocking rate than conventional modern farms in our area,” he said. There are several hundred animals and birds on the property and while many are without a doubt cute, and

some rather cuddly looking — there is no room for sentimentality. The couple believe in a stringent culling process and will not breed from something just because it's rare — it must shape up correctly and be productive. There is however no compromise on quality. “We farm for profit. We make money from stud breeding, poultry and goods. Apart from the meat and eggs we use ourselves, the rest goes to the market, restaurants and private individuals,” says John. A rotational grazing system helps control the various parasites and also keeps many of the weeds at bay rather than reliance on drenches and pesticides and is a step towards stock resistant to parasites and fly strike. It's a question of knowing which animal to graze first in the paddock and what animals to follow up with.

For example goat worms are not transferable to cattle, so when grazing after the goats the cattle clean out the paddock of worm infestations, without the need to drench Cattle can be picky eaters and don't graze as closely as sheep can, so the result of sheep following cattle leaves paddocks completely grazed out — its a great way of getting rid of ragwort since the sheep eat it. Farming organically can be very labour intensive (imagine finding and picking up all those free-range eggs) and is not the fastest way of growing animals, but the couple believe their methods produce not only healthy animals but tasty produce. We go a step (in fact many steps) further than free range. Our pigs have access to a wide variety of natural food, giving the pork and pork products great taste, said John. Selling to the Farmers Markets has improved returns for Avonstour rather than being graded against by the freezing works because animals had coloured coats or the meat a

higher fat content (organic pigs tend to have more fat) buyers are lining up for the improved taste. Animals are picked for processing when in prime condition rather than market demand. Sheep once deemed as bruising

too easily, are now sought after as farmers have come to realise sheep such as the Wiltshire Horn do not have to be shorn, dagged or crutched as they self shed. Life is busy — there is always something to do — the goats need to be milked, the garden planted, and tended. They try to be as self sufficient as possible buying only those things they can't grow or make — or the odd treat. While the farm is a lot of hard work, it is way of life for the family and has been an ideal environment to raise their children, one in which they feel satisfied. Avonstour offer workshops on self sufficiency, animal husbandry and sustainable farming and lifestyles so others may benefit from their methods — the next courses are due to commence in February 2012.

New Grizzly a roaring success

by our motoring correspondent

Come and see our friendly team and talk to us about your Motorcycling needs

Yamaha’s Grizzly series of ATVs has long been legendary for toughness and practicality — a byword for reliability in the most demanding environments. But the next generation of this hardworking machine is by no means a stark and utilitarian tool. The engineers at Yamaha have worked hard to refine the performance of the Grizzly (both the 700cc and 500cc models), adding a level of comfort and ease of use which would be the envy of some road cars. While the capable power of the big 700cc and 550cc power plant is still all that you could want for a hard day’s work, Yamaha have upgraded key areas to make a day’s work aboard the Grizzly a more comfortable and safer experience! The innovative speed-sensitive power steering of the Grizzly removes the chore of wrestling with the handlebars at low speeds. Combined with

a low centre of gravity and an innovative chassis the Grizzly handles and rides better than its predecessors, traversing uneven ground and slopes with aplomb. Independent suspension and a generous ground clearance help smooth out the bumps and the mud. Attention to detail has been lavished on the Grizzly’s automatic transmission as well — a v-belt system which gives you power when you need it. Unlike other automatics, the Grizzly is also smart enough to know when a little engine braking is needed, slowing your descent when you’re tackling the steep stuff. The switch between four-wheel and two-wheel drive is now just as easy as pushing a button, with four-wheel drive delivering ‘locked differential’ torque to really handle a load. All in all, the new Yamaha Grizzly is a great example of innovation in just the right places.

Electric power to tame the wild by our motoring correspondent

The hybrid and electric revolution which is swiftly gaining momentum in the world of road-going vehicles would seem to be a world away from the realities of a hard day’s work in rural New Zealand. While vehicles like the Toyota Prius aim to save the environment with lower carbon emissions and a smaller ‘footprint’, the average farmer knows the ‘environment’ up close and personal — a place of muddy hollows, rocks, streams, steep banks and unforgiving weather. Our rural environment is known as one of the most challenging places on earth for a vehicle, so more power has often been the order of the day, coupled with no-nonsense tough construction and four-wheel drive grip. That’s where Bad Boy buggies enter the picture — a range of electric utility vehicles built tough as nails and able to do the job of a much larger truck without the fuel bills or the bulk. Developed for hunters in the North American wilderness, these vehicles span the gap between a full-sized ute and an ATV quad, with two-seater practicality, a wide, firmly planted stance thanks to a broad wheelbase, a generously sized tray for all your tools and gear, and of course the safety of an enclosed roll cage and roof. This kind of small, lightweight but rugged vehicle has become a regular feature on many Kiwi farms thanks to its ability to access areas where bigger trucks can’t go, or to nip around with extra tools and materials which an ATV hasn’t got the grunt or the size to carry. The Bad Boy brings a new concept to this market — electric power. But it’s no golf cart — the Bad Boy comes from the land of the Hummvee after all, and hunters and farmers in the US are more than pleased by its 70-kilometre range on a full charge, buckets of ready torque, low maintenance costs and (literally) bulletproof construction. The Bad Boy plugs into a wall socket to charge, and can easily accommodate two workers and all their tools, plus the dog! Because of its light weight it is able to make the best of its hi/lo ratio drive system — unique in that it doesn’t actually need a gearbox, or indeed any complicated parts apart from its hardwearing electric motor. The obvious

Bad Boy have carved out a thriving niche building electrically powered machines for serious hunters and farmers in one of the most competitive markets in the world — North America. Now they’re poised to bring the electric revolution to New Zealand with a range of practical and tough machines to suit every farm and every budget. And as an added bonus, in the back blocks of New Zealand we have far fewer grizzly bears to contend with!

I reckon I have discovered a good way of getting rid of all that horse poo that we horse owners have to shovel out of stables, yards or paddocks. The best part is, in doing so I will also be able to grow myself some out of season veggies and maybe even some colourful flowers. handed down gardening book ‘Hotbed’ jumped off the page at me. It stirred memories of my grandfather — a keen gardener who I well remember talking about his cold frames and hot beds. While I can’t recall exactly what they were, or how they were made, I do remember well his plentiful garden. Usually made of a bed of manure and straw from animals such as horses that pass much undigested plant cellulose in their droppings, and with enough depth of soil on top to stop the plants from burning, the hotbed allows plants with a preference for warm soils to be grown. Intrigued I did some research and found it was the Dark Age Arabs of Spain and Portugal who supposedly used the first true hotbeds. Small in size (about two feet in height and about three foot square), these hotbeds enabled them to get their produce to market quicker and therefore the ability to demand top price. From the late Dark Ages it is thought they were introduced to Europe from the crusades (Arabic numerals were thought to have been introduced at this time as well) and by the sixteenth century hotbeds were commonplace, in botanical gardens in the first instance and later in household gardens. In the Victorian era hot beds gave savvy gardeners the upper hand on their contemporaries by allowing them to grow various vegetables out of season. Although they went out of fashion in the nineteenth century due to the prevalence of hothouses and greenhouses, hotbeds are still used by organic gardeners and those like me, who do not have these modern facilities. To build — scalp grass or de-turf the area you want to use and decide upon what you will use to insulate and hold the sides of the bed — some gardeners use wood, other blocks or bricks while others prefer to dig a pit and use the earth for insulation. The experts suggest placing fresh straw and manure stamped down to 60-centimetre depth to ensure an even release of heat, on the ground. Place on top of that a 20-centimetre layer, of equal parts of top soil and garden compost. Provided you ensure a 3:1 ratio mix, your hotbed can be as long as you want, but apparently if you choose to make it deeper it could get hotter than the optimal 24-degree Celsius temperature. Regular checking with a soil thermometer will determine if you need to cool the bed down with a little water and leaves. Cover the bed with glass or a layer of clear plastic to keep in the warmth and keep out the rain. It’s a good idea to make a frame to hold the glass or plastic to make it easier to lift. Leave your hotbed for a week before sowing seeds directly into the soil or placing seedling trays on top of the warmed earth. The beds are good to use for about two months after which time the material on top will be well decomposed and can be dug into your garden — the bottom layer can be added to the compost bin. No need to use hotbeds exclusively for vegetables or melons. Anything can grow in them, flowers included — what a nice idea for some bright colour during these dull days.

November 2011 Highlights TUX NORTH ISLAND & NZ SHEEPDOG TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Premieres Wednesday - Friday at 7.30pm from November 30. EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE ONLY ON COUNTRY99TV Sheepdog trials are a competitive sport in which handlers direct their dogs to move sheep around a field and into fences and/ or enclosures. Three sheep are always used in New Zealand, as this is the most challenging combination for the dog: the sheep form a two-and-one, with the single sheep always being unpredictable. Find out who will win the title of New Zealand Sheepdog champion when the Tux North Island and New Zealand Sheepdog Trail Championships premieres on Country99TV on Wednesday to Friday at 7.30pm from November 30.

2011 GENERAL ELECTIONS — THE RURAL ISSUES. Premieres Sunday 20th — Thursday 24th November at 9.00pm If rural issues directly influence you, then you can’t afford to miss Country99TV’s Rural Election Specials presented by current affairs veteran David Beatson. Various aspects of party policies that directly change the agriculture industry in New Zealand will be up for debate by candidates from the National, Labour, Act and the Green party. As New Zealand’s agriculture industry is regarded as one of the best in the world and has achieved and sustained high productivity growth over the recent decades, Government policies have direct repercussions on this growth and sustainability, therefore Country99TV is committed to asking the hard questions so an informed decision can be made on election day. For all the answers to the questions you have on rural issues, make an informed decision by tuning into 2011 General Elections – The Rural Issues, Sunday 20th, Monday 21st, Tuesday 22nd, Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th November at 9.00pm.

FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Premieres Friday November 25 at 9.00pm The FEI European Championships are biennial events, attracting riders and national teams from more than 20 European countries.
