Now in its sixth year, the rural sports awards honour the best of New Zealand’s rural athletes, volunteers and administrators. Former Olympic medallist rower, Nathan Twaddle, is the awards convenor of judges. “We are proud to announce a new award; the Future Post Award for Rural Sportsperson with a Disability,” he said. “We want to ensure our awards are open to everyone. The new award will ensure those rural sports athletes with disabilities are recognised.” Mr Twaddle also welcomed Courtesy Ford as the new sponsor of the Lifetime Legacy Award. Norwood chief executive Tim Myers said the awards recognise those who are passionate about heritage sports. “They give it all they’ve got, and it’s fitting that we celebrate their commitment and character. “Every year, it is awe-inspiring to hear the stories and achievements of rural sports athletes, many of whom are world champions in their discipline. “It’s also heartening to hear about the dedication of rural sports administrators to their sports. Many of them are the glue that keeps heritage sports alive in rural Aotearoa today,” he said. Nominations for the 2022 awards are now open for: ● The PTS Logistics New Zealand Rural Sportsman of the Year Award ● The Skellerup New Zealand Rural Sportswoman of the Year Award ● The Fonterra Young New Zealand Rural Sportsperson of the Year Award ● The Levno Outstanding Contribution to New Zealand Rural Sports Award

November 2021 TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
SHEARING A FAMILY AFFAIR BY DENISE GUNN Shearing has featured in Andrew Brown’s life since he was a youngster, watching shearers on the family’s sheep farm in Southland.
A
ndrew and his wife, Kara, operate Andrew Brown Shearing. From their Inglewood base, the couple and their team shear all over Taranaki, with the main focus on eastern hill country farms. “We live in the Inglewood township, but we lease some land just out of Inglewood where we rear calves and fatten beef cattle,” said Kara. The couple established their business in March last year during the first Covid-19 lockdown. “Kara and I took the shearing run over from my former employer,” said Andrew. “Over the main shear, our busiest time of year, we have up to 14 shearers. The rest of the year, we have six to seven shearers. We are lucky enough to have all local staff, especially this year.” Andrew’s woolshed experience began at a young age. His older brother had a crutching run, and from the age of 12,
Andrew was pulling sheep out of the catching pen for him. “Then, at 14 years old, I jumped on the handpiece for crutching.” In 2010, a year after Andrew left high school, he completed an introduction shearing course through TECTRA in Te Anau. By 18, Andrew had taken on the crutching run previously owned by his brother. Three years later, he was shearing full-time. “I took up shearing full-time over the main shear for Grant Moore Shearing in Winton.” After shearing in Southland for a time, Andrew travelled to the United Kingdom in 2014 to cover summer shearing in England. He then moved to Taranaki. Kara grew up on a Taranaki dairy farm and had never seen a sheep shorn until she met Andrew. She said ever since they first met, Andrew has tried to teach her to shear.
Shearing has been part of Andrew’s life since he was a youngster, watching shearers on his family’s farm
Andrew has competed at the Stratford A&P Show on several occasions before
“He has always let me have his last sheep, starting from the last side then going from the long blow. Lots of laughs
and arguments, but that’s as far as I know my way around a sheep. Andrew is very patient with me. He makes it look so easy.”

Some of the Andrew Brown Shearing gang
A few years ago, while Andrew was shearing his father’s sheep in Southland, he and Kara had a speed shear at the end of the day. “Kara didn’t quite get to finish hers as it kicked out and escaped through the roller door out to the 300 already shorn,” said Andrew. So far, Andrew’s main career highlight has been travelling to England, spending time shearing over there. He enjoys meeting people from all over the world in the sheds around New Zealand. For the past seven years, Andrew has competed in the shearing section at the Stratford A&P Show. He’s made three semi-finals, one final in 2020 and placed second in the senior class. Some of the Andrew Brown Shearing gang also compete as individuals,
Andrew and his shearing gang travel all across Taranaki, particularly the eastern hill country areas
followed by a competitive contractors shearing heat on the day. Operating their business is a joint effort. Kara takes care of the administration, cooks for the shearers, and looks after their two sons, Bentley, 3, and Lincoln, seven months. “Bentley loves going to see dad Andrew in the shed work the baa baas. Andrew throws him in his pen with the sheep, or he’s chasing them around the yards. He even has a matching singlet like his dad and his own wooden handpiece. “I will definitely be encouraging Bentley to take up shearing as he gets older. Surely it’s in the blood,” said Kara. Andrew and Kara plan to continue developing their shearing business, setting a long-term goal towards owning a sheep and beef farm.

elinda and her husband, Ben, were both raised on dairy farms. Ben’s family farmed in Okato, and from an early age, he decided on a dairy farming career. Belinda initially worked as a travel agent in Auckland. After the couple married in 2003, they set goals for herd ownership while living in the Auckland region. Investing in rental properties helped them to reach that goal. The pair lived on Belinda’s income and used Ben’s earnings to buy their first rental property in New Plymouth. On their return to Taranaki, Belinda continued working in the travel industry while Ben managed a dairy farm, milking 300 cows. In 2006, they bought another rental property and then two years later sold both rentals to raise the finance for their herd. In 2015, the couple began sharemilking 680 cows on Dave and Adrienne Hopkins’ 235ha farm near Waitotara. The following

year, the Hopkins and Prices were awarded the supreme title at the Horizons Balance Farm Environment Awards. Ben and Belinda also won the 2016 Taranaki Share Farmers of the Year title. “We left the sharemilking operation at the end of the season and have moved up to Otakeho where we lease a farm and cows. This means we are closer to our own property two minutes up the road,” said Belinda. Belinda and her husband Ben own an 80ha farm, with a 13.5ha Māori lease attached, at Oeo. Now into their fourth season there, the couple milk 280 cows. Although they planned to have a manager and part-time assistant this season, this hasn’t worked to plan. “So Ben has been running it with the help of a farm assistant.” Taking up opportunities and using their skills to give back to the dairy industry are part of Ben’s and Belinda’s focus. For the past three years, Belinda has been a Taranaki Veterinary Centre board member.
As the 2021 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year, Belinda received a scholarship to undertake a professional business development programme
“I’m also a facilitator with Rural Support Trust and have been involved in the Taranaki Environment Leaders, and now the Taranaki Catchment Communities.

“I become involved because I like to help people doing whatever that is to better themselves. So if it’s to help with their study, business, mental health, just whatever, I will always stick my hand up. I guess I’ve been noticed through that with different organisations such as Primary ITO, DairyNZ, Rural Support Trust and just in general.” Belinda said the highlights and challenges with these roles are one and the same. “You have to get through the challenges to understand your abilities and your strengths. For me, the biggest opportunities come from the challenges. I’ve found the most amazing networks and connections from being pushed outside my comfort zone.”
Belinda and her husband Ben own an 80ha farm at Oeo and lease another at Otakeho
Winning the Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year title still hasn’t completely sunk in. “It still feels amazing. Hard to believe it’s actually me and that I am sharing that accolade with such amazing wahine that have done some awesome things for the agricultural sector. “I’m super humbled and honoured and will endeavour to use this opportunity to create some really positive things for the people in the primary sector.” As Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year, Belinda received a scholarship to undertake a professional business development programme. “I’m just about to graduate with the Agri Women’s Development Next Steps programme next month. Then, of
course, there will be some research for me on what, how and when to use this scholarship I have received, and some outside the box thinking about different opportunities that this will bring.” Belinda and Ben find dairy farming provides an ideal family lifestyle while raising their two sons. “We are about to embark on some more goal setting for our businesses as we have achieved all our goals to date. So it’s time to make some new ones.”

FARM FIT

BY DENISE GUNN Making a difference to people’s physical fitness and mental wellbeing was the driving factor when Kane Brisco set up Farm Fit.
T
he south Taranaki sharemilker has been involved in sport all his life, playing rugby, dabbling in boxing and running. “I thought rather than complaining nothing was happening to improve people’s lives; I could do something about it,” Kane said. Kane established Farm Fit in 2019, building an outdoor gym in the paddock next to his house. “I’ve taken elements from boxing, strongman and Crossfit. They are all tied to movements that help with life and life on the farm.” Growing up in Bell Block, on the northern outskirts of New Plymouth, Kane left school at 17 to go farming. Together with his wife, Nicole, and their three young children, the
couple is now 50/50 sharemilking on Brian and Patricia Williams’ 70ha farm near Hawera, milking 210 KiwiCross cows. Kane said a few years ago, when the milk payout to dairy farmers was low, he set up a community Facebook page. “We put a post up for anyone to come and workout with me to get fit. Farm Fit took off from there and got a life of its own.” After the initial five or six people turned up to the first session and around 10 the following month, Farm Fit now has close to 13 regulars. “We meet twice a week in the evenings from January to July,” said Kane. “They are 45-minute sessions, and we try to keep it interesting, exciting and challenging at the same time.”
The Farm Fit group meets twice a week from January to July
Using items found around the farm, Kane has improvised these to create gym equipment. “We use a lot of water containers, made up some sandbags, use posts and strainers, tractor tyres and sledgehammers.” Sledges, made by engineers, can be pushed, pulled and carried. Kane has also set up poles to hang boxing bags on a pipe. “Last summer, I set up a squat, using a barbell as well.” During Farm Fit’s off-season, from August to December, Kane continues to think up new ideas to add to the gym and training sessions. Farm Fit welcomes people from all walks of life and any level of fitness. Contact Kane through messaging him on facebook.com/FarmFitNZ.

Despite disruptions caused by Covid-19 alert levels changes in Auckland, Northland and Waikato, the awards have received a pleasing number of entrants. The programme will continue with some adjustments to ensure the safety of all involved. New Zealand Farm Environment Trust chair Joanne van Polanen said regional committees had worked hard with farmers and growers in their communities to ensure a worthwhile and rewarding programme could be completed. “It is more important than ever that the great initiatives and work being done by farmers and growers is being celebrated and shared with others.” The BFEA programme has been slightly adapted to make it safer and less onerous for entrants, given the current Covid-19 situation. It includes the requirement of all judges and entrants to be fully vaccinated. “Whilst we respect that individuals have the right to choose whether or not to be vaccinated, the community nature of our programme, including awards functions and field day events, means that to align with the government’s Covid Protection Framework, it is the trust’s policy that all BFEA entrants are required to be vaccinated. “Through our regional networks, partners, sponsors and entrants across the country, we have a large number of people involved in the awards, and we need to ensure we are running a safe programme for all.” One round of judging will be used to complete the full judging process to limit the amount of contact between entrants and judging panels. “Whilst we have had to change our usual processes in an effort to keep our

However, there’s more than the commonplace cabbage tree within a genus of 15 species spanning a geographical area from south-east Asia, Australasia, Polynesia and South America. Both temperate and tropical cordylines span a range of colours from green to pinks, reds and deep purple. There is also a range of variegated forms that add to the selection of cultivars available to gardeners throughout New Zealand. Cordylines provide an architectural quality to even the smallest garden. They are versatile enough to be grown in decorative pots and become a feature in their own right. Most cordylines thrive in sites with full sun and reasonably rich, well-drained soil. Even the old green cabbage tree will thrive well if given a good start with organicallyrich matter, compost and good topsoil. Mulching during the summer will help conserve the soil moisture and prevent drought stress in the plants. Tropical cordyline species have a tender habit and can be easily damaged by hard frosts during the winter. These thrive well in sheltered areas and courtyard settings. They also pair well with other tropical and subtropical plants to bring a touch of the exotic to outdoor settings. The plants need very good drainage and rich soil to maintain colouration and growth during the warmer months. In the availability of nursery-developed cultivars of the cordyline, the range is diverse and colourful. The awardwinning Albertii is a striking example of the species. The green foliage has a

heavy band of rich cream with a flush of pink and makes a stunning display for container planting. Add in Paso Doble to give a flamencostyle flare of colour to an entranceway setting. Its leaves are burgundy edged with bright pink. An upright grower, the plant will reach up to three metres after seven years — position in full sun or partial shade.
A more recent cultivar is Raspberry Fountain, a small-growing cordyline with a clumping habit. The bright pink leaves cascade from a clump, making it an ideal candidate for a courtyard garden. Other available cultivar options include Purpurea, Green Goddess, Red Star, Salsa, Red Fountain and Jive. Visit your local nursery or search online for availability in your area.

LAND GIRL AT
HEART BY DENISE GUNN Field technician Amanda Seddon has always been a land girl at heart. Horses are also a large part of Amanda’s life
R
aised on a sheep and beef station under the Ruahine Ranges near Mangaweka, Amanda grew up around livestock. She also developed a passion for horses from a young age. Although her father vowed his daughter was never going to ride horses, a local Welsh Mountain pony arrived on loan one Easter. “I spent the whole day riding her and eating Easter eggs,” said Amanda.
The pony was returned to its owner during school holidays for visiting family to ride. Eventually, Amanda’s parents bought her a pony, which was later found to be in foal. This foal gave Amanda a taste for educating young horses. Amanda attended Pony Club, competed at shows and hunted. Showjumping was her discipline of choice. Later in life, she returned to trekking and breeding potential performance horses. Teamwork between Amanda and her colleague, Richard Hammond gets the work done

As her parents dabbled in the odd racing syndicate with little success, Amanda suggested breeding their own. A thoroughbred mare owned by Amanda produced a filly by well-known sire Zed. The filly never raced but went on to produce three foals, with the first one recently broken in and starting pre-training. In 1989, after receiving a full French Limousin yearling heifer as a 21st birthday gift, Amanda established the Dore Limousin Stud. The following
year, she spent two and a half months working for several Limousin breeders in Alberta, Canada. “I learnt herdsmanship and grooming skills while helping out at numerous shows. “My Canadian trip not only helped with showing and judging stock but gave me an insight into the profits to be gained by calving two-year-olds. It was perfectly achievable for the Limousin breed; thus, I implemented that as a policy of the Dore herd.”

Amanda’s experience with cattle stems back to her background growing up on a sheep and beef station
Amanda went on to become a cattle judge and in 2006 accepted the appointment of Royal Agricultural Interbreed Beef judge. In 1991, Amanda married and for the next 20 years farmed in the northern Manawatū. “Our family dynamic changed due to the black dog. That is when my two children and I first rented in Feilding, before two years later purchasing a 4.3ha bare land lifestyle property, which I developed and built on. “I had to change my lifestyle by simplifying life for the children, so by moving to town, they were able to get themselves to and from school while I tended to the farm or went to work.” Amanda also had to disperse her Limousin stud, but the horses and all
the pets went with them, including her son’s cow. Eight years ago, Amanda started working as a field technician for the New Zealand Grazing Company. The business, established in 1987, operates throughout the North Island. Under a New Zealand Grazing Company’s contract, a dairy farmer’s young replacement heifers are placed with a grazier for a term of 12–18 months. During this time, the company is responsible for the management of those heifers. “We administer all yearly vaccinations, manage the breeding programme, and aim to achieve their target weights at the end of the contract before we send them home.” As a support service manager, Amanda and her colleague cover

the Taranaki, Manawatū and Wairarapa regions. “My role is to liaise with both the owners and growers, coordinate and conduct the on-farm weighs, administer any health treatments, organise mating programmes, and ultimately make sure the heifers are growing before having to arrange their transport home at the end of the contract. One day I can be at Urenui, the next at Lake Ferry, then the next up in Taihape. “I love my job. Although I had not been around a lot of dairy stock, having worked with beef cattle all my life, I had more than enough credentials.” In her spare time, Amanda trades in lambs and continues breeding horses. Together with partner Blair, the pair is close to racing their first racehorse.

TWENTY-FIVE
YEARS CARING
FOR THE LAND BY DENISE GUNN New Zealand Landcare Trust marks its 25th anniversary this year with the knowledge it has helped to preserve and protect the nation’s land, rivers and streams for future generations.
The NZLT marks its 25th anniversary this year
T
he trust, established as an independent charitable organisation by a key group of non-governmental organisations, follows the Australian model. It brings together production, environment and recreation groups together to tackle the challenges of sustainable land and water management. These trustee organisations include Federated Farms of New Zealand, Federation of Maori Authorities, Rural Women New Zealand, Ecologic Foundation, Royal Forest and Bird Society, Federation Mountain Clubs, and Fish and Game New Zealand. NZ Landcare Trust CEO Dr Nick Edgar said these trustee organisations govern the trust and collectively represent most privately-owned land-use interests in New Zealand.
Hundreds of Landcare groups and farmers received support for projects
“When NZ Landcare Trust was established with a collaborative governance model in the 1990s, it was novel. It has now become the norm.” Sustainable land management through community involvement is the trust’s mission. It has a grassroots approach,
focussing on landowner and community action on the ground. “Landcare is about people taking control of their local environment,” said Dr Edgar. “Anyone can get involved because Landcare puts ownership of land and water management issues in the hands of

local people, helping to build community capacity and encouraging shared solutions. “NZ Landcare Trust works with farmers and rural landowners to develop leading-edge approaches to sustainable agricultural systems. We are facilitators. We support grassroots action and locals driving the solutions themselves.” To get projects up and running, the NZLT either involves the community or farmers and local volunteers approach the trust. When it involves the community, key people are sought to work with, events are held, the project’s profile is raised, people become involved, and it grows organically. If key people are already involved, NZLT works to include others, supports the existing volunteers, raises the project’s profile, and seeks more support from agencies.

Volunteers working on a project
“I think we generally choose projects that support the local community and others agencies that are going to make a positive difference in the long-term.” For the past 25 years, the trust has supported hundreds of Landcare groups and farmers to plant trees, fence and protect rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands, and support the protection and enhancement of some of New Zealand’s iconic national areas. Regional coordinators are located around New Zealand. Dr Edgar said the coordinators’ focus is on building the essential skills, knowledge and capacity to change to environmentally sustainable farming within the landowner community. NZ Landcare Trust North Island team leader Nardene Berry said she has enjoyed working with fantastic people in the different projects she has been involved in during the years. “There are dedicated and passionate people doing awesome work, and I feel privileged to support them in a small way.” As the organisation is a national independent, apolitical, not-for-profit organisation, funding continues to
be a struggle, particularly from the corporate sector. Dr Edgar said in addition, fiscal limitations mean it can be hard to grow the NZLT. “Another challenge is trying to provide evidence of change in the short term from problems that have been created over many generations. An element of faith is required for long-term outcomes.” Throughout New Zealand Landcare Trust’s 25-year history, there have been many notable projects across the nation. It has also backed groups in the beginning stages that have gone on to become their own entities. It has also been recognised nationally and internationally. In 2019, the NZLT received the community contribution award at the Westpac Waikato Business Awards. The trust’s Aorere River Project won the inaugural Morgan Foundation NZ Riverprize at the International Riversymposium Gala Dinner in Brisbane. “The trust undertakes a critical and unique role in promoting sustainable land use in the rural sector,” said Dr Edgar. “Quite simply, we aim to protect and restore natural waterways and increase biodiversity.”

It has proved to be a challenging task, given the range of very demanding terrain presented on farms throughout New Zealand. Of course, many farmers push the capabilities of a side-by-side to the limit and beyond, and servicing is done when the vehicle breaks. These facts have to be taken into account with the design of a side-by-side, but the balance is in producing something that is very strong while at the same time does not have the characteristics of a tank. In the case of the Tuatara side-by-side, our approach has been to produce a machine that is primarily constructed of steel for strength, as opposed to plastic, which becomes brittle and breaks easily when exposed to ultraviolet light, and is expensive to replace. We have also placed an emphasis on simple engineering and ease of access to componentry so that our vehicles are easy to service, even by the customer, and the time spent in doing so is considerably reduced.
Our latest addition to the Tuatara range is the Tuatara fully electric model. The process of introducing a new sideby-side to the market has come with its challenges in terms of selecting the best, most robust components for the vehicle. However, the benefit that we have over the competing multinational companies is that if we have a component or design aspect that is failing regularly, we have free range to make changes and design improvements. Our latest addition to the Tuatara range is the Tuatara fully-electric model, which uses the same tried and tested platform as the petrol model but enjoys the low running costs, low maintenance and quietness that fully-electric vehicles provide. CHRISTMAS TREES CREATE
DELIGHT BY DENISE GUNN
On buying a small lifestyle block, Whanganui couple Micheal and Jan Spicer decided growing Christmas trees would be an ideal use of their land.
M
icheal was born in Whanganui, growing up on a 1,100-acre property across two farms shared by his mother, his aunt and their husbands. The original farm, bought in the 1850s, remained in the same family until it was sold 20 years ago. Although Jan spent the first 12 years of her life growing up in Havelock North, she spent a lot of time on her grandparents’ farms in Taihape. Her father eventually took over his parents’ Taihape farm, running it as a sheep and beef unit. When
her father died, Jan’s mother shifted the family to Whanganui, enrolling her in a full-time, one-year secretarial course. Micheal and Jan’s goal was always to own a lifestyle property, achieving this in 2011. Jan said they pondered how to use the land better, settling on Christmas trees and creating Christmas Trees on Somerset. During their first year of developing their Christmas tree business, Micheal and Jan planted 300 trees. They bagged a further
PROGRESSIVE LIVESTOCK LTD KIM HARRISON 027 288 6845 www.progressivelivestock.co.nz
100 to sell as living trees. However, after two years, they abandoned the idea of bagged trees due to the triple workload this created. “Our first challenge was finding a supplier. We had decided to go with becoming a Christmas tree farm in October of 2017, but we had no joy finding a supplier with any available seedlings. This is when we discovered, from the final call to a supplier, that we needed to have ordered them way back in the January or early February of a year. “Luckily for us, this large supplier had 400 left over from another order that wasn’t required.” They buy Pinus radiata seedlings at around 30 centimetres in height. “They are Pinus radiata but have been developed by our supplier as a Christmas tree variety due to having four needles rather than three, and so are fuller,” said Jan. Working out a planting rotation system was next on the list. Around 500 trees are planted each year.
Think 70 is the new 50
Jan does the initial pruning to shape the trees and care for them. When the trees have been growing for 18 months, Micheal takes over caring for them. “Pruning to shape these trees has been more extensive due to our property being in what must be a microclimate. So each tree needs to be shaped as an individual as their growing habits are quite different from each other. We have around four main prunes each year and mini makeovers as required.” Learning by trial and error, the couple also received a little guidance at the start from a Hawke’s Bay grower. “The trees, from planting to selling time, are with us for two and a half years,” said Jan. “The highlight is definitely the joy these trees bring to our customers and the happiness and laughter we see as families wander through choosing their perfect tree. So much fun for both us and for them too.”

Building better water systems
by Andy Bryenton
Most of the debate and discussion on the now-mandated Three Waters legislation change has centred around civic councils and how they will adjust to the future. However, there’s a whole other question for rural citizens.
set for the roll-out of enforcement and the rest of the Three Waters structure still blocked by debate, groups like Federated Farmers may yet see a softening of the government’s stance and a reduction of that hardline insistence that a tank supplying two cottages constitutes a water supply system on a par with that of a small town.

In the meantime, it’s wise to book in advance for infrastructure like tanks, filters and pumps, as a surge in demand for these and the plumbers who install them may well come hard on the heels of a final decision. We all agree that healthy water is a vital resource; it’s all about how it’s guaranteed, who decides, and who carries the cost.

It centres on the other side of the Three Waters coin. The new government agency Taumata Arowai, the water quality watchdog aims to monitor water health across the nation. It’s going to be one monumental job. Federated Farmers, for instance, opined that close to 75,000 rural properties will be reclassified as water services providers under the new rules. Any water supply serving two or more households counts and must satisfy the new authority that they are up to a standard similar to town supply. “We asked for anyone supplying less than 50 people to be exempted, but in the end were not heard,” said Federated Farmers national president Andrew Hoggard. “The government has jumped in at the deep end of this pool, and they are likely to drown their officials in the paperwork this decision is going to create.” What does this mean for those building on the farm, expanding quarters for sharemilkers or even adding a granny flat for relatives and guests? The short answer is if this legislation goes through as read, it may be simpler and easier to structure in a separate tank and filter system for each dwelling. There are those talking about a retrofit to perfectly functional existing systems to avoid being caught in the dragnet and subjected to costly and

Water is the stuff of life for farmers, a precious resource that can’t be overstated, but in a hot, dry summer, it’s sometimes hard to source. Recent rules changes and the intense scrutiny of the government’s Three Waters policy have thrown water issues into the spotlight, at the same time as changing technology has pushed advancements in solar power. Better photovoltaic panels and more efficient pumps have led to an ‘outside the tank’ solution for getting water from where it rests underground to where it’s needed. The idea of natural forces being harnessed to pump water is not a new one. Countless windmills across the United States and Australia take up underground water for farms to this day. With limitless breezes to turn the pump, the idea was embraced from colonial times onward. In the US, 57,000 windmills were sold by a single salesman, James Fenlon, making him the most successful door-to-door rep ever to live. In New Zealand, the sun can be relied on more than the wind unless you dwell in certain latitudes. Moreover, it’s the sun dominating the weather at the time water is most needed, during the summer. Enter a smart solution, solar-powered remote pumps, able to reliably draw up water from underground or even source it from streams and dams far away from the power grid. When the nearest plug socket is far away, traditionally, it’s been petrol and diesel
Solar pumps have proven a life-saver for isolated villages in the developing world; now, this clever technology is aiding Kiwi farmers too
that have driven the nation’s rural pumps. Anyone who has wrangled with an old and cantankerous internal combustion pumping engine knows that these can be thirsty and temperamental. Livestock are equally thirsty in the summer months. It makes good sense to turn all that free solar energy into kilowatts to litres of water in your troughs and tanks. What’s more, modern technology allows for excellent water monitoring as
well. With a tablet or smartphone in hand, the modern farmer, equipped with solar pumps and backup tanks, can direct the flow to where it’s needed and keep up to date with water levels as well. In the same way that battery-operated power tools enabled smarter, more tactical work in far-flung parts of the

farm, solar-powered water pumps offer flexibility and a dependable solution. The price for getting on board with this clever idea keeps getting more reasonable, too, as solar panels become a mass-produced item. Take a closer look before summer hits by talking to your local solar experts.

rowing up on the family’s farm in the Wanganui region, Murray had close connections to flying. “My father and one of his brothers had their pilot’s licences, and there were pilots on my mother’s side of the family as well. In fact, Mum lost two brothers in the second world war, both pilots,” said Murray. On leaving high school, Murray began working on a farm. “It was through doing farm work that I earned the money to learn to fly. There weren’t student loans back in those days, so we had to earn the money to pay for flying lessons. This made it a slower process than it is nowadays.” Murray gained his private pilot’s licence about three years after leaving school. “I got my private pilot’s licence at Wanganui. A couple of years after that, I went to the aviation college at Motueka

to get my commercial pilot’s licence. All my flying training was done in a Piper Tomahawk aircraft.” Murray said any pilot, anywhere in the world, never forgets their first solo. “It’s a huge buzz. I remember mine as if it happened yesterday, even though it was about 35 years ago.”

In 1987, Murray completed his commercial pilot’s licence. The following year, Murray was asked if he would be interested in training to become a topdressing pilot. “One of the local agricultural aviation firms had a pilot that was due to retire, and a replacement for him was needed.”

as the dog calmly continued to reverse the truck, then stop and apply the park-brake with the accompanying hiss of air.” Murray walked over to the truck, let the dog out and introduced the couple to his four-legged truck driver. “The actual driver in the rear cab cottoned on to what was happening and stayed out of sight.” The couple were still dumbfounded as they climbed into their car and drove away. Murray’s son, Tom, is following in his father’s footsteps, pursuing an aviation career and recently completing his Agricultural Rating. “The Ag Rating involves specialised training which, once completed, allows the pilot to then carry out topdressing operations.” Tom’s training was carried out in the Waikato under the watchful eye of Super Air’s chief pilot, Kevin Young. Murray plans to continue flying for Super Air as long as possible.

Murray has experienced many highlights through his career. “A standout is probably in advancing from the under-powered and underperforming aircraft that we all started in to flying today’s high-performance aircraft with state-of-the-art spreading technology.” He also recalls a humorous moment when English tourists pulled up in their car and came over to chat during a lunch break. The loader truck, which has two cabs and can be driven from either end, was being used to move a load of fertiliser. In the driver’s seat of the front cab was the loader driver’s dog. The loader driver was in the other cab. While the couple talked to Murray, the loader driver reversed out of the fertiliser bin, front cab first, with the dog sitting up on the driver’s seat. “It looked for all the world like the dog was actually driving the truck. The English couple were absolutely gobsmacked and stared with wide eyes and jaws dropped

During the length of Murray’s career, he has flown throughout western, central and lower North Island. He has also spent time flying on crop-spraying operations in Canada. Two years ago, Murray started working with Super Air in Whanganui, predominantly covering Taranaki, Whanganui, Rangitikei and Taihape. Most of his flying is in an Air Tractor, but he sometimes also flies a Cresco topdresser. “My aircraft has the latest spreading technology installed in it. It is capable of performing both variable rate and constant rate topdressing. It is also able to be adapted to the aerial spraying role and is used for thistle spraying, Porina spraying and so on.” Weather is the biggest challenge facing topdressing pilots. “It is largely wind that dictates how much or how little we achieve on any given day. Safety is our number one priority, and more often than not, it is the wind that compromises our safety.”

Christmas is fast approaching and truffles are great for nibbles or gifts for the person that has everything. Chocolate covered coconut truffle 1 can of condensed milk 225g of desiccated coconut 250g of milk chocolate Mix condensed milk and coconut together and roll into balls or bars; tip keep your hands moist as this is a very sticky mixture and place on baking paper. Refrigerate until firm. Melt chocolate in a double boiler and make sure no water or steam gets into the chocolate, so it doesn’t cease. Dip the balls into the chocolate, place back on the baking paper, and let the chocolate set before storing in a container in the fridge. You can decorate with nuts or coconut if you want to do that, while the chocolate coating is just still a little soft. Chocolate Cake Truffles Use a chocolate cake recipe of your choice. One chocolate cake (16 inch tin) 500g cream cheese 300g chocolate Cream the cheese until soft. Add finely crumbled cake. If the cake is a bit dry, you can add more cream cheese or juice or a liqueur like Kahlua just enough to make it a little moist but not tacky. Mix until well combined. Roll into balls and put in the fridge until chilled. Melt the chocolate and dip the balls. Once the chocolate has set a bit, sprinkle it with cashews or any other nuts or decoration of your choice.

Not feeling your best?
OPINION
Over it
by John Arts
by Jane Gray
I have a younger client who had poor immunity with regular colds, low energy and generally feeling unwell for no medical reason.
I don’t know about you but I’m over it.
Our first priority was to improve his immune system. Despite what you read, you cannot ‘boost’ your immune system. Our immune system is a complex, interconnected group of cells and tissue types. Our immune system is highly dependent on nutrients. Of these, the most important is vitamin D, which acts as a master controller of our immune responses. Then there is a long list of trace minerals and some vitamins. I often talk to people who take vitamin C and zinc for their immunity. These are important, but just two of many. This is where a well-formulated comprehensive multi-mineral, multivitamin and multi-antioxidant can be very helpful as they can provide all the important nutrients, not just some of them. Having regular colds, especially in winter, can be the first sign of poor immune responses. You may have a
great immune system, but it may be half asleep or just disorganised. I put my client on an initial higher dose of my multi-nutritional formula to lift critical nutrients rapidly. We also included vitamin D. He has been delighted with the response. He has been through winter without a cold and with much more energy. The bonus has been that the niggling low-grade depression has gone, probably from lifting vitamin D. Our bodies have a huge capacity to heal and restore but only if we give it the nutrients it needs. Give yourself a three-month challenge; you may well be surprised. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. There are so many things going on in our country right now that I am getting a little sick and tired of it. I have been vaccinated because I think it is the right thing to do, and to get back to some sense of normality, we will have to be 90% double vaccinated. How will that ever happen? For whatever reason, there are too many that have no wish to be vaccinated. The government is now using the fear of restrictions to force the vaccination issue, no jab, no job, no freedom. If the fear of getting sick isnt enough of an incentive, then why does the government think that what they have proposed is going to work, and when it doesn’t, then what? The poor old employer is now being made responsible for monitoring vaccination status for staff and those that walk in. It is just another layer of stress put on already highly stressed businesses.
Perhaps, it is time to open up our internal borders so family and friends can be together, so businesses can open their doors and trade normally and just let the chips fall where they may as far as the unvaccinated and Covid are concerned. Perhaps improve our health system to cope rather than spending billions keeping the country tied up because of those that don’t want to comply. Why is the government not addressing the supply issues we keep hearing about? The lack of stock is a major concern for all, especially coming into Christmas, the biggest revenue generator for retail; but with no stock, what happens? I want to buy local, but if local can’t supply, what’s the alternative? Covid is here to stay, and we all need to be able to learn to live with it. However, we choose to do that; it is an individual’s choice rather than the government’s. All I will say is consider your choice with our children and civic responsibilities in mind.

Polaris has hit the ground running with its latest Ranger side-by-side vehicle, an all-electric unit that has a suite of advantages for the modern farm, over and above the lack of a petrol bill. Polaris has been building electric Rangers since 2010. However, this is the first of a range developed alongside partners Zero Motorcycles, a team that know electric power and its applications. “With the rising interest in electrified vehicles, we are investing in electrification in order to meet the needs of current customers as well as appeal to tomorrow’s power sports riders,” Mike Speetzen, Polaris’ interim CEO, said in a statement at the Ranger’s debut. “The all-new electric Ranger is our latest effort aimed at leading the industry forward in electrified power-sports vehicles.” That power-sports tag is very American and reflects the abiding love for the Ranger, which stateside hunters have expressed. Here, the prime market is the Kiwi farmer, and they want more than a sports shooter’s buggy. Thankfully, there’s no such disappointment to be had. There have been no compromises, and the underpinning of the EV is pure Ranger. No matter the power plant, everything in the Ranger stable is made for serious off-road use; the electric offering is no exception. That means drivers will enjoy a 612kg machine with 30 horsepower on-demand, and lots of low-down torque. It may not be the fastest thing on four wheels, with a top speed of 40km/h. However, it will steadily maintain this speed over terrain that would frighten some quads, relying on its
“The all-new electric Ranger is our latest effort aimed at leading the industry forward in electrified power-sports vehicles.” eight big batteries, slung low, to provide a solid and stable centre of gravity. There’s an impressive 960kg of towing capacity available as well. Polaris admits that with 80 kilometres of range for each charge, undertaken overnight via a standard three-pin plug, the electric ranger may not suit the very biggest farms. However, it has a huge advantage for farmers managing livestock; its silent operation won’t spook skittish beasts. It also won’t wake up significant others who may want to get an extra hour’s sleep when early morning off-road trips are necessary. Add this to an incredibly simple drive system with less maintenance and zero fuel bills, the enticement is there to be experienced. Now, if only the government would offer a subsidy for this kind of EV, right farmers?
