Developed by the Wise Group, Just a Thought offers free online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) courses to support the growing number of people across the country experiencing anxiety and depression. The Wise Group is a family of charitable organisations working to improve wellbeing services available to people, organisations and communities. Just a Thought is based on a tool jointly designed and developed by a team of clinicians and researchers from St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, and the University of New South Wales. The team worked on the model for more than a decade. Through consultation with New Zealanders and cultural advisors, the Wise Group self-funded the development and adaption of the tool to suit New Zealanders and the New Zealand environment. Former Director-General of Health, and a Wise Group trust board member, Dr George Salmond also made a generous bequest to the project. Anna Elders is an experienced CBT practitioner and clinical lead for Just a Thought. She has worked in the mental health field, both in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, for the past 18 years. She said around one in five New Zealanders experience significant mental health difficulties.

“Due to the growing demand for services and support, New Zealand’s mental health system is under extreme pressure.” Ms Elders said in some cases people are waiting up to six months for professional help. Costs involved in accessing professional help can also be a barrier. The CBT courses teach people how to improve their mental health through learning to interact differently with thoughts, and identify behaviours that enhance wellbeing. From the comfort of their own home, and at a time that suits them, people can choose to complete the courses using the self-care option. General practitioners and clinicians can also prescribe a course and monitor their patient’s progress via secure login to a dedicated clinician dashboard. Each course has six lessons which take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Lessons are available five days apart to allow the person time to practice the skills learned. Currently, Just a Thought offers courses in depression and anxiety. Other courses are scheduled to be launched next year. The courses are available at justathought.co.nz To date, more than 9,800 clinicians and over 36,000 people have used the tool that Just a Thought is based on.

Entrepreneurs working on New Zealand’s agricultural and food challenges are encouraged to register with Sprout Accelerator for help to grow their business. Eight New Zealand start-ups will be selected to join the six-month business accelerator programme, starting in January 2020. The programme is designed to fund agritech and agrifood innovators. Entrepreneurs will receive business mentoring and workshops from worldclass business owners and directors from across the technology, agricultural and food industries. DAIRY CAREER

a rewarding path by Denise Gunn

Although Sam Dodd grew up as a city boy in Tauranga, he has developed a huge passion for the dairy industry.

S

am wasn’t born directly into a farming family and didn’t consider dairying as a career in his early years. Instead, he began studying paramedics at university. However, at the age of 20, Sam left university and was looking for an opportunity to move outside of the city. He took up work with dairy farming relatives. Six weeks later, when a veterinarian offered him a farming job in Taranaki, his career path became clearer. Sam’s first season in Taranaki was working as a farm assistant in Hawera. Since last year, Sam has been employed by Nathan Joyce as an assistant manager, working under farm manager Hermes Javier-Siffer. Nathan’s parents, Mike and Vivian Joyce, own the farm. “I have been at my current farm for one season and have signed on

to continue my progression,” said Sam. A herd of 350 Friesian/Jersey cows are milked on the Joyce’s 109ha South Taranaki coastal farm. This past season, the farm was stocked lower than previous seasons, yet the herd was just 400kg/MS away from obtaining the farm production record. With the farm’s location on the Waimate plain, the heat in combination with salt spray can make growing grass, or holding on to the quality, challenging. Despite these conditions, the farm grows grass silage. “A typical season would consist of moderately wet winters. We only get a handful of frosts per year — so temperature is not of a concern. The mean annual temperature is 13C and an annual rainfall of 1,200mm. Springs can be hit and miss, and summers can

Sam finds the dairy industry incredibly rewarding

Farming has been a huge part of Sam’s life and personal development be very extreme at times. We have been very lucky that we haven’t had anything out of the ordinary in terms of animal health issues, just the typical lame cows with the odd bit of mastitis. All animal health issues are handled effectively and efficiently as our farm provides lots of education and opportunity for learning, and ways to prevent future issues.” Participating in this year’s dairy industry awards was a huge highlight for Sam. He placed third overall in the trainee section and picked up

a merit award in communication and engagement. Sam continues to further his knowledge, completing a few courses through Taranaki Veterinary Services. He is also studying PrimaryITO Dairy Farming Level Four and Level Two Milk Quality. When these studies are finished, Sam plans to enrol in the level five diploma. He also wants to improve his understanding of pasture management. “I would like to take on more responsibility generally while fine-tuning

my calf rearing skills, to improve the future of the herd’s genetic merit. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate that I have been employed by such outstanding employers. I haven’t had many if any challenges along the way. If there are any issues, I can go straight to my employers as they are more than willing to assist with anything, both work and personal related.” Sam said the dairy industry is incredibly rewarding. “It also offers a significant opportunity that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. Everything that you do in your day has a cause and effect, and nothing goes unrecognised.” Continuing to climb the industry ladder and move forward into a farm manager’s position is amongst Sam’s short-term plans. He would like to build

the equity required to go on to contract milking and aspires to own a herd in the future. “That will allow me to continue forward into equity partnership or farm ownership as the ultimate goal.” Farming has also become a significant part of Sam’s life and personal development. “After my mother passed away and battling with mental health, I became lost and unsure of what pathway to take in life. Dairy farming has done so much for me in terms of being positive, always looking forward, and to set a high standard for yourself and be the best you possibly can.” “Now at the age of 22, I’ve developed a huge love for the industry,” said Sam. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything else — it’s that good.”

nitially, Patrick used his personal Facebook and Snapchat pages to reach out to others through karaoke. “I just wanted to make a few of my family and friends laugh, as farming can be a hard and gruelling lifestyle sometimes. Then a friend approached me and said it could be a huge thing, suggesting we make a farming karaoke Facebook page,” he said. In early April 2018, Patrick started the Farming Karaoke page, which has now grown to more than 4,000 members. Each day, Patrick has requests from people around the country, and the world, wanting to join the group. “I had no idea it would take off the way it did.” On an almost daily basis, Patrick records himself singing karaoke

in the cowshed, out on the farm or around the house and then posts the clip to the Farming Karaoke page. He’s also managed to record a few group efforts with friends in his lounge. “The aim was always to make someone smile on the hard, dark days. With the amount of goofballs and feelgood posts, we definitely achieve at least one extra smile a day. I’ve never minded playing the fool if it’s to brighten up someone’s day.” Patrick is currently a farm manager, milking 280 cows in Taranaki. Although he grew up on a dairy farm, Patrick never thought he would become a dairy farmer. “I never understood the stress that comes from it and always saw it in a negative light. I have never been so

Understanding the importance of time away from the farm, Patrick likes to spend his time off work with his family and dog, relaxing or walking along the beach or in the bush. DRIVING THE WILL TO LIVE BY DENISE GUNN Charitable foundation Will to Live’s founder, Elle Perriam, is on a mission to improve mental health awareness and wellbeing in young rural people.

S

ince the launch of Will to Live last year during the Hunterville Huntaway Festival, Elle has held a number of Speak Up events in rural communities throughout New Zealand. Elle’s motivation for establishing the foundation came from a personal loss when her late boyfriend, Will, took his own life two years ago. Will worked as a shepherd in North Otago. “I didn’t want any family to go through the suffering we had to go through,” said Elle. “I didn’t know of any support services for young rural working people, who are generally isolated and living in valleys, who do not have any access to help and services. Even when they do reach out for mental health support, the waitlists are ridiculous.”

Elle decided to create and crowdfund a nationwide Speak Up tour, which included 16 mental health events in 16 rural and isolated places throughout New Zealand. The aim of each event was to educate, inspire and provide support, taking a holistic and natural approach to physical and mental health. “We decided to go into their local towns and host our events at their local taverns and pubs, where it was a safe, comfortable and already well-known environment to them.” Will’s favourite black huntaway, Jess, is now cared for by Elle. Jess has become a symbolic mascot for Will to Live on the Speak Up tour. The local rural community were encouraged to bring their farm dogs to the events, Elle and Jess in east Taranaki backcountry during the North Island ‘Speak Up’ tour

Elle and Jess in east Taranaki backcountry during the North Island ‘Speak Up’ tour

which began with a Speak up with Jess to break a moment’s silence. “The huntaway’s bark symbolises the power of the ripple effect that happens when people speak up about their mental health issues and inflict positive change.” Speak Up events hosted a variety of guest speakers including local farmers, health professionals and the Rural Support Trust. A charity auction, dinner and entertainment followed on from the speakers. Elle said the feedback received reflected on her aim

for the events to be casual, informative, relatable, positive and humorous. “We are super happy to get this sort of feedback as a casual positive approach to the subject is the right way to introduce mental health education and awareness into rural communities. We are not lecturing them. We are farmers relating to other farmers, encouraging and giving confidence for them to speak up also. “This is the approach we need to take with farmers and a simple and effective way to start the conversation.”

NEWLAN REFRIGERATION

Elle was raised on a small cattle farm in Haast, South Westland. “It’s one of the most isolated places you could get,” she said. “I loved growing up on the coast, and the opportunity of working with horses and cattle from a small age has influenced my passion for the industry. I have developed a strong interest and passion working with stud animals.” During the past two years, Elle has worked at Mt Guardian Perendale Stud, Te Mania Angus and in Australia. She splits her time between the two studs. “However, Will To Live has taken over a lot of my time recently, and I want to put in 110% to make sure it is a continuing thing, and all the money donated to us goes to the best place possible.” During the organisation and planning of all the events, Elle kept in mind how important community is in rural areas. Keen local farmers, Young Farmers clubs and Rural Support Trusts were contacted to help run the events and organise a local speaker in their area. These groups and individuals also collected auction items with contacts in their communities. The Speak Up tour was an opportunity to raise funds for the continuation of Will to Live’s travelling education tours into 2020. There are plans to host workshopstyle tours focussing on educating farm managers and owners on the importance of recognising staff wellbeing. Specific training will cover leadership, resilience, mental and physical wellness as well as nutrition.

October 2019  TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

DAIRY EFFLUENT MANAGEMENT When it comes to dairy effluent management, not one system ticks all the boxes. There are multiple considerations that can have a huge impact on how the system is designed and how it will perform over time. Such things as rainfall, soil types, contour, elevation, water tables, catchment areas, feed pads, water supply, power supply, nutrient loading/concentration, farm system type and farm management structures all come in to play when designing a new system or upgrading an existing system. The times of digging a hole in the ground, buying a pump, some pipe and any old irrigator are over. To achieve a fit for purpose solution, there are multiple skill sets required. It is very important to use a reputable company with the required skills to design a system that achieves industry best practice. When it comes to dairy effluent system design, the industry has developed the Dairy Effluent Accreditation Programme which was developed to ensure that companies designing dairy effluent systems have the appropriate knowledge, skills and resources to design, build and support fit for purpose systems. These companies are audited every two years to ensure their standards are maintained. This gives farmers confidence that they are working with someone that knows their effluent not someone who just talks it. Effluent design accredited companies are recommended by Taranaki Regional Council and all regional councils across New Zealand. AgFirst Engineering was one of the first companies in New Zealand to become “dairy effluent system design accredited” and have been accredited for 8 years now. Davieth Verheij, Director of AgFirst Engineering is renowned for high quality dairy effluent builds through the country and has made a strong presence in Taranaki since 2013. “Over this time, we have worked with many

local farmers and support companies on several great projects,” says Davieth. I have been specialising in dairy effluent system design and build for the past 15 years. “I started on the tools which included covering breakdowns 24/7 365 days per year for New Zealand’s largest milking machine company. This was a sure-fire way to learn what works and what doesn’t,” says Davieth. AgFirst Engineering works very closely with Coastal Agri Services in Opunake. Coastal Agri Services have an excellent reputation as being a reliable service provider to Taranaki farmers. AgFirst Engineering designs the dairy effluent system from start to finish. AgFirst manufacture the key infrastructure and Coastal Agri install it to the design specification. AgFirst and Coastal Agri commission the system and AgFirst Engineering sign off the project with Taranaki Regional Council. There is much more to an effluent system than just pumps, pipelines and irrigators. “We believe there’s huge value in providing the full solution, everything needs to link together seamlessly. We don’t want to have to come back,” says Davieth. With this approach, over time, we have naturally become part of a team of leading service providers to the Taranaki rural sector. Johnny Neil Building and Taranaki Precast Concrete provide concrete construction works such as sumps, sand traps, solids storage, large concrete storage tanks and pump/pond stirring system foundations. Mark Gopperth from Gopperth Contracting completes our minor site excavation work including, power supply, drainage and irrigation pipeline trenching and backfilling. “We are very impressed with Marks new chain trencher mounted behind their tractor unit. Trenching is fast and when we encounter large rocks, they have the diggers ready to ensure there are no delays,” says Davieth. When it comes to effluent storage, there

AgFirst’s Weta travelling rain gun in action near Hawera are many different solutions. We look at the site, shoot levels and dig test holes (check water table and land drainage levels) so we know what we are dealing with. The goal is always to achieve gravity into the storage facility (pond or tank) if possible. This means that the farm owner and farm operator/s can manage the system at their leisure rather than the continued worry that there can be a sudden discharge. AgFirst are ready for any situation; we are one of few companies in New Zealand that can confirm whether an existing pond is sealed or leaking at low cost with our pond drop test. If it’s a new build, some options are - Synthetically lined pond (plastic or rubber), concrete tank, above ground lined tank, Glass fused steel walled tank with concrete floor or flexible above ground bladders. All options are considered, and full system pros’ and cons demonstrated. AgFirst have been fortunate to work with Karl Barn Contracting on many projects over the years. Karl is familiar with our pond/tank construction requirements and never fails to deliver above AgFirst’s expectations. This has been supported by Viking Containment of whom we have found to

provide excellent pond lining solutions at a competitive price. Power supply and electrical control is the heart of an effluent system. This is often where systems fall down. It is essential that the pumping system design is inline with the electrical control. Failure to be on the same page as the electrician is a recipe for disaster. Over time we have worked closely with Mark Frost Electrical and nothing has ever been a problem. Their can-do attitude and back up support has been invaluable. Electrically powered effluent system is not the only option. PTO or generator powered pumping and stirring systems, slurry tankers or umbilical dribble bar systems are all feasible options depending on the farms environment. AgFirst and Coastal Agri Services are very passionate about dairy effluent. Davieth from AgFirst also enjoys heading to the coast and being spoilt by Scotty from Coastal Agri Services. An evening trip to the beach for a surf cast with a beer in hand is the norm. Paua and whitebait on the ready for a snack and a hot BBQ or skillet for a T Bone is as good as it gets. TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

AG CONTRACTORS Keep farm workers safe Farmers, lifestyle block owners, and contractors alike must make sure everyone is safe when on a property and that any risks from farm work are reasonably managed, eliminated or minimised. Worksafe says farmers must ensure risks from any previous work carried out on the farm such as spraying hazardous substances, are reasonably managed to protect the health and safety of contractors. Farm buildings and any area where work is being carried out, apart from the farm house must be safe for everyone. Contractors must also keep farmers healthy and safe by ensuring any risks from their work that could affect the farmer, farm workers or other contractors on the farm are reasonably managed. If a risk can’t be eliminated then it must be minimised, so far as is reasonably practicable. Farmers and contractors should consult, cooperate and coordinate activities with each other. They must work together to meet their overlapping duties every time a contractor comes on farm. Having a faceto-face or over the phone meeting before

work starts can help to reach a common understanding and establish clear roles, responsibilities and actions. It will also prevent any gaps in managing health and safety risks. The more influence and control a farmer or contractor has over a health and safety matter, the more responsibility they are likely to have. Checklists and possible questions for both parties include knowing where each will be working, having contact details and informing each other of expected or unexpected risks and other work activity on the farm that could pose a risk to them and how to manage and communicate those risks. Contractors must be informed of farm rules such as speed limits, alcohol or drug use and any expectations of their behaviour on farm. Ensure all parties know relevant emergency procedures and determine appropriate time in/ time out reporting. Have a back-up

plan, especially if there is no phone coverage and keep a record of what you have discussed. Printing and marking-up a farm map to show hazards is also a helpful idea and have visitors call in at the farmhouse, or phone before starting work. If necessary help them across rough terrain using an appropriate vehicle. The contractor should advise

the farmer where the team will be working on the property should there be various destinations or projects being taken care of and check for hazards themselves as well and inform all concerned of any extra emergency procedures that may need to be known. In all environments, safety must always come first.

Spring will soon turn to summer and the farm contracting business will be warming up along with the temperatures and with that comes time to get equipment out of the shed and ready for balage or any number of farm contract jobs. As always is the case, idle machinery is not going to add to the income and for many farmers who also make up membership of the Rural Contractors Association of New Zealand, summer is an opportunity to get a welcome earner off the actual home farm, The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some good advice on how to get into the paperwork that involves tendering for contracts, an activity that may be time consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards, and an aid in planning work schedules and perhaps taking on additional seasonal staff. “You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’’ a ministry spokesman says. “Tendering is the process involved in responding to an RFx a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward. But applying for larger and/or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete.

Enquiries to: 06 754 8454 or 027 443 1809

You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. “Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business

opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply. “You will need to think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself: Do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment?”

GPS — the contractors friend From top dressing aircraft to tractors and any number of mobile machines in between, GPS has become just another tool that can make farming, the agricultural services and contractors serving the rural industry more efficient — and thus more profitable. Once the stuff of mystery and imagination, and used to guide US military manoeuvres and missiles, today GPS is — as the Chase TV chap would say “just another day at the office”. GPS-based applications in precision farming are being used for farm planning, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor guidance, crop scouting, variable rate applications, and yield mapping.

GPS allows farmers and their contractors to work during low visibility field conditions such as rain, dust, fog, and darkness. In the past, it was difficult for farmers to correlate production techniques and crop yields with land variability. This limited their ability to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies that could have enhanced their production. Today, more precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers, and better control of the dispersion of those chemicals are possible through precision agriculture, thus reducing expenses, producing a higher yield, and creating a more environmentally friendly farm. Precision agriculture is changing the way farmers and agribusinesses view the land from which they reap their profits. It is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plantanimal requirements and prescribing and applying site-specific treatments to increase agricultural production and protect the environment. Where farmers may have once treated their fields uniformly, they are now seeing benefits from micromanaging. Many of the new innovations rely on the integration of on-board computers,

data collection sensors, and GPS time and position reference systems. Some people believe that the benefits of precision agriculture can only be realised on large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques that can be developed for use by all. farmers. Through the use of GPS, GIS, and remote sensing, information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers can achieve additional benefits by combining better utilisation of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting the natural resources for future use. Location information is collected by GPS receivers for mapping field boundaries, roads, irrigation systems, and problem areas in crops such as weeds or disease. The accuracy of GPS

allows farmers to create farm maps with precise acreage for field areas, road locations and distances between points of interest. They can accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or monitor crop conditions. Crop advisors use rugged data collection devices with GPS for accurate positioning to map pest, insect, and weed infestations in the field. Pest problem areas in crops can be pinpointed and mapped for future management decisions. and input recommendations. The same field data can also be used by aircraft sprayers, enabling accurate swathing of fields without use of human ‘flaggers’ to guide them. Crop dusters equipped with GPS are able to fly accurate swaths over the field, applying chemicals only where needed, minimising chemical drift, reducing the amount of chemicals needed, thereby benefiting the environment.

New line-up ready for action Now in his second year of a joint venture business partnership (with parent company Power Farming New Zealand), dealer principal Sam Vickers is a true believer of the old adage that staff are the most important aspect of a successful business. After previous service manager Darryn Sunnex left to pursue another business venture earlier in the year, Sam and his team have taken the opportunity to review their operating structure and make adjustments to better suit their clients’ needs. “Things are pretty challenging for some farmers at the moment, and it’s critical that we can put our best foot forward whenever they need us,” says Sam. “We have learnt over the years that clear communication and planning are absolutely key in making sure we can respond to clients’ problems quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively.” The decision was made to split the service management role in two. A new role of after-sales manager was formed to oversee both the parts and service business. Long-standing parts manager Marc Nicholson has assumed this role. “Marc is very organised, quick to respond and has a great feel for our clients’ needs,” Sam says. His job is to oversee the requirements of business and its clients, and generally ensure the wheels keep turning in the background. Bradley Anderson, a long-standing technician with more than 15 years’ experience, has stepped into the role of service manager. With Marc administering the service department, this now allows

Bradley to fully focus on the support and back up of his team of technicians, and ensure their needs are fully met in terms of training, knowledge and product support. Bradley is training two apprentices and intends to increase this number in the new year. On-call rosters are planned in advance to ensure the breakdown support is available whenever it is needed. With Marc shifting out of full-time parts management, the hunt was on to find an equally capable replacement. Lyle Crudis has hit the ground running after joining the team two months ago. Lyle has a career background in agricultural parts, and when the opportunity arose to move home to Taranaki and join the Power Farming team, he jumped at the chance, Sam says. “I’m amazed at the range we have to offer farmers,” Lyle says. “Through Power Farming, I have access to over $50 million in stock with most available overnight. We work hard here to ensure we carry everything needed to keep machines going in the field. Driveshafts, wearing parts, Castrol lubricants — we are confident we have the largest range in Taranaki.” Sam says he is fortunate to have such motivated, conscientious guys in the team. “Without them — we don’t have a business.” With a highly organised,

enthusiastic team, and the support of the country’s largest New Zealand-owned farm machinery business, the team at Power

Farming Taranaki clearly understand the importance of quality service support on farms today.

The future of fencing Stokoe fencing has bought one of the most advanced cost effective post drivers on the market. Ideal for steep ground it suits the Taranaki terrain providing a greater level of safety combined with being fast on the flat. Weighing a little more than three tonnes the Protec Evo is transported between jobs behind a ute and its oneman operation maximises time and efficiency on the fence line. Farming is

changing in so many areas including regulation, technology and much more. It’s our job to consider how these things might impact farming long term and what is needed now to make fencing efficient and cost effective for our agribusiness clients. “With increasing pressure on farmers to fence off waterways and wetlands,

Working with the soil by Andy Bryenton

Ask a seasoned farming veteran what the most complex system on the farm is, and they won’t talk about any of the machinery in the shed. They won’t even mention the modern data management systems, which are becoming so important to working the land. In fact, those who picked that this is a trick question will identify the soil itself, with its microscopic biome, as the most complex system they work with. Science has taught us a lot about soil management since the earliest days of the plough and the three-field rotation system. Moreover, one of the most important lessons has been about compaction. Soil needs to breathe, as we all know, but there’s a paradox when it’s also necessary to pilot large tractors and machinery to achieve economies of scale across big areas of land. Enter the Case Magnum Rowtrac, a modular, modifiable machine, which takes part of its design cues from the military and many more from solid soil science. Based on the renowned Magnum series, with outputs between 170 and 315 PTO hp, the Rowtrac is designed to fit a furrowed field hand in glove. That’s due in part to its half-track configuration; a design lifted from the big heavy-duty trucks that towed artillery guns in the second world war. In their case, they had to traverse broken up mud and snow with a huge load towed behind. In this Case (you see what we did there) the front tyres are specially designed to run at super low pressure for a bigger contact patch, spreading out the weight. The rear treads put down the power over a series of pivoting rollers, which also oscillate, keeping four points of ground contact at all times. The end result is a powerful and large tractor, which ‘snowshoes’ over the soil, lighter

on its feet than many operators dared to believe. Even better, for those servicing row crops, there’s the ability to build out the width of both the rear and front

1.5M please

axles without sacrificing this ability. With row spacing between 20 and 40 inches (these are US designed machines), there’s a setting that right for most applications. The addition of

automation, such as AFS AccuGuide auto guidance, means that at the end of the day, those who choose the Rowtrac will enjoy razor-straight rows with wellaerated soil.

Thinking outside the box Shipping containers are known to be built tough, able to withstand all that nature can throw at them. Add a bit of Kiwi ingenuity, and they can become just about any kind of structure, from a storage barn to a ‘man cave’, a holiday bach to a hunter’s retreat, a granny flat or a garden shed.

Oi! DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Just ask Royal Wolf, Australasia’s biggest supplier of the versatile metal containers. They’ve seen their products turned into just about anything with four walls during the years, and demand continues to grow. Need a pop up retail space? Somewhere to store that classic car project? Or even for their original purpose? The Royal Wolf team are experienced and fully stocked. Even better, they are locals, like senior sales executive Emma Davies, who is proud to bring the Royal Wolf difference to her home town. Her colleague Paul Creighton, Royal Wolf’s executive general manager, says

Rural contracting shows growth Rural contracting in New Zealand is now a $1.5b industry, accounting for nearly one percent of the national employment figures and it is growing by 5.8 percent a year, according to an Infometrics survey conducted for the Rural Contractors Association. “Our 500-plus association members are sprinkled from Northland to Southland,” says RCNZ president David Kean. “Much of that growth is due to our relationship with, and work for, the farming community. We regard that as of primary importance, many of us contractors are farmers ourselves and most of us live in rural communities. Like you, our growth is tied to the health of the rural sector and the ability to secure good workers to help us run our businesses.” RCNZ has been cautiously welcoming of the proposals from Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway to introduce a simpler, employer-led system for temporary work visas for skilled regional workers. “We have been pleased to engage with Federated Farmers in putting a case for rural contracting to sit alongside the dairy farming, forestry and meat industries in the first sectorwide agreements. Our members help farmers get in enough winter feed, stay on top of weeds and a host of other tasks which allow your farms to remain productive. We need a steady reliable supply of skilled operators to drive our machinery from spring to autumn;

getting approval to employ such people from overseas through the current hoops of WINZ and Immigration is an annual and frustrating nightmare. “That said, we were again able to secure a reasonable supply of skilled overseas machinery operators, with 149 coming in spring through the existing Approval in Principle process, to work with 46 of our members. While we do all we can to employ New Zealanders, there simply aren’t enough with the skills or aptitude. “With industry challenges including the M. Bovis outbreak, which we collectively appear to have managed relatively well, contractors appreciate the cooperation of farmers in providing water and appropriate washing areas. “We also appreciate your assistance as we remain vigilant as contractors on noxious weeds including Velvetleaf and Noogoora burr. We have to advise the authorities if we see any of these weeds, otherwise we can face huge fines as well as the risk of spreading the weeds to other farms. “Chemical spraying remains a core part of our work for farmers and I have to say the new Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, regulations are making things very complicated. I’d suggest

farmers take note here, because while you do not currently have to meet such baffling, bureaucratic requirements, such extensions are always a possibility. “RCNZ continues to run its annual Agrichemical roadshows around regional centres to provide a convenient way for our members — farmers welcome too — to stay up to date with the

regulations and requirements. Our Infometrics report confirms just how important rural contractors are with our sector now employing nearly 23,000 people — about the same population as Masterton. That number has more than doubled in the last 20 years as farmers and others look for efficiencies.”

Advantages of contractors

Employing a rural contractor has many bonuses to achieving a task and being a contractor adds to work variety on a daily basis. Primary ITO has courses available such as the National Certificate in Fencing — level two or three both electric and non-electric. The courses cover every position in every primary industry, so you can find the course that is right for you and where you want to be including the dairy, horticulture, meat and fibre, seafood industry and primary services. Learning the skills to drive farm machinery, and adding to your knowledge base in a specialised way, means opportunities can open up here in New Zealand and across the world. As most people know there is a demand for New Zealand shearers but the same applies to operating rural contracting equipment, and you can work your way around the world, season by season in countries where there is work available for skilled operators. Rural Contractors New Zealand is the national association and the leading advocate for rural contractors in the country. The association represents the interests of contractors engaged in a wide range of activities such as

land development, drainage, fencing, cultivation, planting and harvesting of crops, highway vegetation control, chemical application, sheep dipping and direct drilling. RCNZ monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of their members. They maintain close relations and lobby on behalf of members with a wide number of organisations,

government departments and other national bodies. The focus on training is administered by industry training organisation Connexis New Zealand. They supply training to the infrastructure sector of which rural contracting is a part. Details and advice on training options can be found on the Connexis website or through Rural Contractors NZ.

The Egmont A&P Show In addition to the usual sideshow attractions, an exciting lineup of music and entertainment has been booked for this year’s show, something for everyone including Traditional, Modern, Irish and Country music.

“The show is on Friday, November 22 and Saturday, November 23 — with entry for adults $10, seniors with Gold Card $5, students with ID and children are free,” says Egmont A&P Show executive officer, Janet Morgan. The Parade, sponsored by Fred and Eunice Rodie Charitable Trust starts at 6.30pm on Friday, November 22 with prizes for the best float of $1,000 spread across first, second, third and fourth. There is no theme this year. Equestrian events run during four days from Thursday to Sunday, and the Harris Taylor FEI NZL World Cup Jumping round on Sunday attracts world-class entries. New this year is the Dunstan Horsefeeds Showing Accumulator. New to the Leisure Treasure Pleasure Section is the Potato Growing in a Bucket competition, The Gift of Food competition and the Photo Competition, which is open to all who want to enter. Photos must be taken during the Egmont Show or equestrian events between Thursday, November 21 and Sunday, November 24 November. “Members will again receive a car

pass for priority parking in the Maire Street car park, a wrist band for show entry and the Members and Sponsors Lounge in the Expo Hall with vouchers for a drink or food item. People can become members by signing up prior or on the day and enjoy this exclusive zone. “Although we are best known for the annual show, we are much more than just the show. There are a huge variety of activities happening here throughout the year, from BMX trials and dog agility to paintball champs and with our amazing grounds and horse facilities, we are the equestrian centre of Taranaki. “The entire 32-hectare venue and the show itself is run by dedicated volunteers, not owned or run by the council but by a group of farmers who get stuck in month after month. “We extend our grateful thanks to all the businesses, organisations and individuals that support our show, and invite any interested parties to join us in keeping it all going — in the community by the community for the community.” For more information visit egmontshowgrounds.org.nz.

Real gardens for real people Taranaki’s Fringe Garden Festival, set to run November 1–10 this year, is promising to be the best in the event’s 15-year history.

This year’s edition presents 39 gardens and 13 places of interest that spans garden art to pottery, New Zealand’s most extensive collection of rainforest cacti and riding the rails on a heritage rail track. Ten of the gardens are new or returning after a break to the festival, and include everything from small compact urban gardens to large rural gardens with lakes, bridges and an abundance of spring colour.

“This year’s new additions will showcase a wide variety of gardening styles,” says the event’s organiser Anne Clough. “That diversity of approaches, practices and the resulting gardens is a really important aspect, and one that makes the Fringe Garden Festival such a unique event.” To discover the heart of New Zealand’s gardens and gardeners — look no further than the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival.

DAIRY

Detection, data and defense by Andy Bryenton

With estimates of the cost to New Zealand dairy farmers of over 180 million dollars per year, clinical mastitis is no trivial matter. It’s been the subject of controversies, such as the hypothesis that stray voltage in the milking shed can lead to the disease. But now technology is pointing the way to its early detection better than ever before. According to DairyNZ, as of 2013, approximately 5 percent of dairy farms were equipped with one of the two forms of extant mastitis detection systems in the dairy shed. This number has increased over the intervening years, but full market saturation is still far off. Part of this is the obvious factor of investment cost, but the other has, historically, been the economies of scale inherent in installing such systems only

during a dairy shed rebuild or new build. The good news is that modern systems are easier than ever to retrofit, and that there’s a good reason to employ them alongside another emergent aspect of dairying; data integration and management. In this era when the farmer’s top tool is becoming the tablet or smartphone, integrating data on factors such as livestock’s diet, their condition, and

whether they are in heat is key to farming with accuracy. Accuracy, of course, affects the bottom line, as less is spent on unnecessary factors. The more that is known, the more resources can be pin-pointed. In the case of mastitis detection, new systems which communicate directly to a whole-farm data management system supersede those which simply alert the milking staff in the shed. While an on-thespot alarm is still useful, tracking and long term statistical analysis are valuable to both the farmer and the vet. Triage can become prevention with good information. The main remaining argument in mastitis detection remains whether

devices that measure somatic cell count (the response of a cow’s immune system to disease) or those which measure the electrical conductive properties of minerals in the milk are more effective. A wide range of results have been reported using both systems; some advanced products combine both methods. The application of electrical conductivity (EC) systems alongside electronic milk metering makes these variants a popular retrofit. What is certain is that early detection of mastitis saves bigger problems in the long term. In an industry landscape where increasingly ‘every little bit counts’, an investment in detection is a wise choice.

Touring with experience The Remutaka Cycle Trail is truly one of New Zealand’s Great Rides, and Green Jersey Explorer Tours has the most experience and offers the best options for riding this fantastic trail.

The diversity of scenery is the most stirring feature of the Remutaka Cycle Trail. It begins in an urbanscape, leads along the Petone foreshore before following the Hutt River Trail, then it snakes across the Remutaka Mountain Range following the Remutaka Rail Trail. Filled with rail history, this section of the trail is a very gentle gradient with five tunnels and a nice hard-packed surface. After riding through the 480m long summit tunnel, there is a rapid descent to Cross Creek and the Wairarapa valley floor. Thirty kilometres on quiet country roads following the shores of

Wairarapa Moana (Lake Wairarapa) leads you to the wild South Coast. From Ocean Beach to Orongorongo Station, is an exposed landscape scarred by wild seas, furious winds and signs of geological mega-events. Karaka groves indicate early Maori settlements with baches, the more recent European activity. At Turakirae Seal Colony, the bull seals gather between mating. Green Jersey Explorer Tours would love to help you explore this adventurous trail. Talk to them about bespoke journeys into backcountry and coastal areas throughout the Wairarapa Valley.

A pain in the …

by John Arts

Muscle pain can have many causes; it can be anything from injury, genetics, medication side effects and a number of diseases. The most common causes of muscle pain I help with are cramp, restless leg syndrome, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), Fibromyalgia (FM) and side effects of cholesterollowering medication. There are a number of effective nutritional medicine strategies we can use to help with muscle function. Our goal is to help relax stressed muscle fibres and improve muscle oxygenation through improved circulation — this is important at night for conditions like cramped and restless legs. Muscle stiffness and pain can be a side effect of statin cholesterol-lowering drugs. Statins slow the rate of the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production. However, this same enzyme is responsible for producing coenzyme Q10. A high-quality coenzyme Q10 like the US-patented CoQsol can help. Some diseases cause muscle pain. Two more common problems are the inflammatory condition PMR and FM, a non-inflammatory muscle problem. With PMR we target overproduction of inflammatory immune system chemicals (cytokines and prostaglandins) and help restore immune function. With FM we focus on adding compounds like magnesium and

Remutaka Cycle Trail

MSM (sulphur) to relax and oxygenate muscles. Once we know the cause of the pain, my role is to identify the healing processes damaged or affected by the problem. For example, cramp and restless leg syndrome can be an indication of mineral deficiencies or poor peripheral circulation. As an example, people with cramp generally respond very well to magnesium therapy. The best magnesium supplements use expensive, but better-absorbed amino acid chelated forms. While magnesium can be very effective, some people need to be careful with magnesium therapy, especially those with digestive issues or on some medications. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. WHEELS

Balanced for work and play by Andy Bryenton

Kawasaki have established some fine off road credentials with their Mule range of farm-ready side by side all terrain vehicles. However, many of their competitors in the market are making a meal out of being fast and exciting on the recreational trails. Can the people who delivered up generations of Ninja branded sports bikes create something that’s the best of both worlds? The answer to that question from the folks in black and green is the Teryx, and despite having a name reminiscent of a huge and vicious lizard, it’s neither heavy on its feet or in any way a ‘dinosaur’. The emphasis here has been on creating a light (713 kilo) and nimble (5.1 metre turning circle) machine which can easily switch it up between rural work and weekend enjoyment. It would have been easy to simply make a Mule with a spicy name and some coloured panel work,. but the Teryx is different from top to bottom, from its Fox podium shocks to its rollcage and seating. There’s only room for two, but there’s ample storage space and towing capacity. Under the hood there’s a powerful v-twin with 58 hp and Mikuni fuel injection, and every effort has been

made to ensure that it’s easy to clean and service despite being mid-mounted to superior stability. Mud is the bane of every off-road technician and mechanic, and keeping it clear has been made simpler with a flip-top arrangement that allows easier hosing and blasting. Add in a very responsive power steering system, and the Teryx definitely delivers on the ‘work’ part of the equation. When it comes to sheer flatout speed, there are other machines with turbochargers and more sheer displacement; the Teryx has an ample 783 cubic centimetres. But fun is not

measured by straight line performance alone. Being nimble and easy to throw into the turns counts for a lot, as does the confidence inspired by the Kawasaki’s planted stance and well thought out suspension system. For those who want a machine that can deliver on tasks around the farm or lifestyle block, but will also put a smile on your face in the weekends or on these long daylight saving evenings, then the good news is that you don;t need two very separate side by sides. This one might just strike the balance you are after. Take a test drive soon and find out.
