Silver Fern Farms Shannon fellmongery could close

A meeting was called in midSeptember to advise the 86 employees of a proposal to sell the factory to Hawke’s Bay-based Lowe Corporation. Lowe Corporation have a processing facility in Hastings (Tomoana Pelt Processors) and part of the proposed purchase agreement is that Silver Fern Farms would toll process its North Island pelt business through the Lowe Corporation’s facilities. Silver Fern Farms CEO Keith Cooper said the business has been undertaking a strategic review of its North Island pelt processing business with a view of optimising returns, reducing cost, improving local environmental outcomes and focussing on its core business. “This proposal will see us collaborating with an industry partner, creating scale and therefore efficiency and improved productivity which is even more important on the back of the forecast lower lamb numbers. “All our people at Shannon were presented with the proposal so they have the opportunity to provide ideas

so we can assess all available options before any final decision is made.” The Shannon fellmongery was originally built in 1963 and used as a nylon factory. Owned by the von Kohorn family, the factory continued as a nylon manufacturing business until it was sold to a United States company in 1972. Manufacturing continued under a new business name, Enzlon Chemical Fibres Ltd, until it closed in 1979. Wooltan Industries (NZ) Ltd and Dawn Meats became joint owners of the factory buildings in 1971. Wooltan Industries established a tannery and fellmongery. In 1984, Richmond New Zealand Incorporated purchased the plant to use as a fellmongery. PPCS took over Richmond in 2004 and underwent a name and brand change to Silver Fern Farms in 2008. Staff at the Shannon plant were given two weeks from the initial meeting to provide ideas on alternatives before a final decision was made. A second meeting, when an announcement confirming the sale was expected, has since been postponed.

Horizons Regional Council has welcomed the High Court’s recent decision regarding the One Plan appeal made by Horticulture New Zealand and Federated Farmers. to move on and build a better regional plan for growers in the region. Horizons Regional Council chairman Mr Gordon said as the appeal covered points of law only Horizons have been working closely with key sectors of the industry to develop the implementation of the One Plan rules and will continue to do so. “In this way we will create an implementation programme that will work for farmers, our community and the environment.”

Positive response to Horizons One Plan court appeal

The One Plan, a combination of a regional policy statement and a regional plan under the Resource Management Act, aims to ensure farming in the Horizons region is carried out in an environmentally sustainable manner. The most controversial issues have been the water sections of the plan and nitrogen leaching. Nitrogen loss from intensive agricultural and horticultural activities defined by Horizons as dairy, irrigated sheep and beef, cropping and commercial vegetable production, within pre-determined priority water management zones (WMZ) were to be controlled at levels dictated by Horizons. Federated Farmers appeal was based around concerns that the rules were too strict and would be unworkable for some farmers. Hor ticulture NZ believed the Environment Court’s decision on how aspects of the One Plan should be implemented were completely untenable for growers. However Federated Farmers is congratulating the Hon Justice Stephen Kos for his determination on the Horizons One Plan appeal. “From the standpoint of pastoral farmers we’ve got a good outcome from Justice Kos,” said Federated Farmers Manawatu-Rangitikei provincial president Andrew Hoggard. “Justice Kos’ interpretation, expressed in his ruling, is that the One Plan allows

exceptions from the fixed nitrogen loss limits. “This is very positive for our farmers and gives them assurance that they will be able to continue farming because unachievable nitrogen loss limits will not now be applied to their farms.” Horticulture New Zealand’s response was

n injury experienced through playing netball and basketball, followed by advice to look for a sport with less rebounding involved, led Sheree towards woodchopping. Her husband, Alastair, was already a serious competitor in the sport when Sheree decided to try it out. Together Sheree and Alastair teamed up as a Jack and Jill double-sawing pair, competing for many years. At the North Island and New Zealand Championships, as well as the New Zealand World Championships which is open to all other competitors around the globe, the couple won titles and broke several records, some of which still stand today. Sheree said she become totally obsessed with the sport and the couple trained constantly. “Initially it was a little difficult to enter what was predominantly a male domain. “Being the only woman competitor at the time, I competed against the men many times and held my own on occasions.” The couple’s two children, Shamice and Dahne, also competed in the sport

for a while. Shamice trained in doublesawing with Alastair before continuing with his chosen sports, surfing and skateboarding. Dahne and Sheree paired up to complete in the Jill and Jill double-sawing events for a couple of years. “Both Shamice and Dahne supported us in our woodchopping ventures as our five grandchildren do today,” said Sheree. As Sheree’s enthusiasm for the sport grew stronger, she decided to branch out into other aspects of the sport which included underhand chopping and axe throwing. “My determination to compete was like an addiction,” she said. “I was hoping it would encourage other women to compete and also maybe we would have a New Zealand Women’s team.” In 1995, Sheree aimed to compete in the women’s events at the World Championships in the United States. She trained hard for the five months leading up to the event. But after arriving in Canada, Sheree become extremely

ill and doctors discovered she had contracted Legionnaires Disease, presumably from the aircraft’s air-conditioning. “I was in isolation and bedbound for some time, losing 12 pounds in 10 days.” Yet Sheree was still determined to compete at the World Championships. She said Alastair agreed to take the four-day drive to the contest venue in Hayward, Wisconsin. “I lay in the back of the car the whole journey — it was a nightmare. “In saying that it also gave me the time I needed for mental preparation and focus.” On their arrival in Hayward, Sheree spent most of her time in the first aid unit in an air-conditioned room. The competition just happened to coincide with a heat wave hitting the area. With Alastair’s help, Sheree appeared in the line-up, draped in cold, wet towels. Sheree said when the event started, her mind overtook her body and she won the race. “My first world title on half a banana and drink supplement which I had consumed in the past ten days.” Sheree has since won two more world titles in the Jack and Jill double-sawing, six in the women’s single-sawing, two in the women’s underhand chopping and been awarded all-round women’s champion in 2001, 2005 and 2006. Alastair and Sheree later travelled through Canada and the United States on an annual basis, competing on the lumberjack circuits for up to ten weeks at a time. The couple took part in exhibitions at the Ohio State Fair with Hank Peters Lumberjack Shows as well. Sheree also competed in the ESPN Great Outdoor Games which included woodchopping and sawing events. As only eight women and men from around the globe are invited to participate, Sheree was delighted to be selected and won four gold medals.

Sheree planned the uniform, incorporating a fern design which also currently features on the New Zealand men’s and women’s uniforms. Alastair and Sheree both originate from Taranaki, moving to Te Aroha 14 years ago. They belonged to the Taranaki Axemens Club for many years prior to their move to the Waikato. many New Zealanders are not frightened to borrow. History has shown many times that borrowers have made the fatal mistake of thinking that because the bank continues to lend the money, the bank must think that the borrower can afford to repay it. One only has to look at the recent world-wide financial collapse, where many examples of lending ended up in foreclosures. The weekend’s article that the Auckland Super City’s debt has gone from $3.9 billion to $6.7 billion over the last three years and will increase to $8.75 billion after six years, should ring alarm bells and cause us to go forward cautiously. The Governor of the Reserve Bank’s recent projections that interest rates will increase to up to 8% plus, in a bid to try and temper the heat that is growing in the economy, brought about by people having easy access to money, will I believe, simply cause more businesses and farms and wage earners who have huge mortgages on their houses, to face the threat of foreclosures.

The New Zealand Labour Party has already signalled that they want to increase the national minimum wage to $18.00 per hour, claiming that the average wage earner cannot survive on the current minimum wage structure. I think everyone would agree that everybody has the right to receive a wage that provides a living and fair reward for their efforts. There will be employers who will claim that this increase will affect the economic viability of their businesses. The golden rules of banking at one time were, you borrowed no more than four times your gross income. Debt servicing was not to exceed 25% of your gross income. The issue facing our rural communities, is that they should not simply rely on the dairy industry having a lot of discretionary income to spend. Much of the increased payout is going to be used to reduce farm debt. The cost of the recent drought is going to have ongoing major ramifications for the economy.

Sheep numbers are down. Cattle numbers are causing a major concern, due to the fact that farmers had to reduce stock numbers as a result of the drought. The importation of meat products to supplement domestic demand is a reality. Many farmers now, when budgeting, average their incomes over a three to five year period. Fonterra’s 10,500 dairy farmers will share an additional $4 billion ($380,000 per average farm production), should the milk price hold for the year. This will be tempered by dealing with the huge costs incurred from the recent droughts and escalating farm production costs and planning for future financial troughs. Many dairy farmers are still struggling to make ends meet. Many have faced doubling of their local government rates. We dairy farmers are proud of our dairy industry. History has taught us that farming is full of income fluctuations. The peaks can be high and the troughs deep.

With a mixture of chaos and excitement, shepherds and their barking Huntaway dogs race to cross the finish line as the main highlight of the Hunterville Huntaway Festival, the Shepherds Shemozzle, takes place.

his is no ordinary race and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. The Shepherds Shemozzle is a challenging trial over a gruelling 3km course, testing fitness levels as shepherds race up and down hills, and over, under or through obstacles while keeping their dogs close to their sides. Shepherds also need a strong stomach as compulsory delicacies on the menu can include huhu grubs, raw eggs and sheep eyeballs, all washed down with warm beer part way through the race. Moments before the race kicks off, shepherds are briefed on the finer details of the route. Their dogs, tied up in a long line on the main street, wait patiently. Then confusion reigns when the race begins as shepherds must find their dogs before they can set off on the course. Race obstacles and the edible delights vary each year and are all kept under wraps until race day. Other challenges can require shepherds to pick up and carry bulls’ testicles or eels in their

All dogs participate in a bark off at the end of this competition. Introduced during the 2009 festival, the Miss Huntaway competition gives these hard-working dogs a chance to strut their stuff on the catwalk. Judges ask questions and the dog owners encourage their canines to bark on demand to answer. Dogs and owners in fancy dress and having fun are also considered in the judging process. “It’s a great day out for the family, competitors and spectators,” said Claire. This year’s Hunterville Huntaway Festival is scheduled for Saturday, November 2 starting at noon.

This year, competitors from as far as Gisborne have been making enquiries about participating in the Shepherds Shemozzle. A Children’s and Inter-school Shemozzle, open to primary school students aged nine years and over, is held earlier in the afternoon utilising some of the Shepherds Shemozzle obstacles. New to the festival this year is a Teen Shemozzle, catering for secondary school pupils and Teen Ag club members. “We have a school from Wellington coming this year,” said Claire.

A variety of activities, a shearing contractors’ challenge and plenty of stalls will also feature during the festival to keep spectators entertained. “We want to push for more quality stalls,” said Claire. “The festival is held right before Christmas.” Known for its deep, loud bark, the Huntaway’s abilities in this area are also catered for in a dog barking competition. Judges score points on the ability of the dogs and owners to follow instructions during a tactical challenge.

Four-wheel-driving has given Ron Neil, his wife Ricki and their family the opportunity to travel off the beaten track and see a lot of New Zealand. Four-wheel-driving has given Ron Neil, his wife Ricki and their family the opportunity to travel off the beaten track and see a lot of New Zealand. Ron has always had an interest in engines, purchasing his first 4x4 vehicle around 25 years ago. Since then Ron has had a long list of vehicles that he has driven over all types of terrain. “What hasn’t he had,” laughs Ricki. The couple are experienced and multi-skilled drivers with Ron performing well in both 4x4 and ATV competitions. “But relaxing and playing in the mud with like-minded drivers is better,” said Ricki. Ron’s work as a stock driver and the pair’s long involvement in farming has also helped develop their driving skills. “With a history of farming, we had the environment to learn.” Including their children in four-wheeldriving and showing them that driving can be fun but safe too is also a big priority for Ron and Ricki. “They learn how to be mechanical as well as saving money at the garage,” said Ricki. “They love it when mum or dad are stuck and needing a tow.”

The club’s goal is to promote four-wheel driving as a wholesome family activity and focus on social four-wheel driving. All grades of runs and different events are organised by the club, catering for both ‘shiny’ four-wheel drive road runs to tough tracks. “This is a local club with some driving, mechanical people from all jobs,

all different places, that share advice and driving skills,” said Ricki. Members learn from each other’s experiences and enjoy the outdoors with their families. A funkhana held by the club is a popular event for families with several games involving multi-skilled driving and fun challenges for both drivers and passengers. Driving off the beaten track over the years has presented Ron and Ricki with many photo opportunities and places

Good hoof trimming needs practice

away all loose horn so that live tissue is exposed. Try not to make the claw bleed because it makes it a whole lot harder to see what you are doing and the healing process only takes longer. It all seems very easy when you read this. The principal is straightforward but putting it into effect requires a lot of practice and instruction.

Last month we talked a bit about some of the things you as a farmer can do to minimise lameness on your farm. We looked at preventative hoof trimming. This month I would like to look a bit more at what you can do once the cow is lame. In reality this is often the only time a cow is being trimmed in New Zealand, so effectively most farmers are being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff all the time when it comes to lame cows. Trimming lame cows is always reactive management and trimming cows only when lame doesn’t make good business sense, but you now have a lame cow and she needs to be treated. What do you do to help this animal? Obviously just looking at the hoof is not going to fix it so more is needed. Assuming that the cow is lame in her claw then by trimming her well we can usually help her tremendously. The principle of good hoof trimming is that

we need to reduce the weight bearing of the sore claw and let the air get to it. A cow is most commonly lame on her lateral claw because the lateral claw is often overloaded when the cow is walking or standing still on a hard surface (refer to last month’s article). So, in this case, we don’t just level the two claws to the same height, we actually trim the lateral claw thinner so more weight is transferred to the medial claw. The more weight we can get off the lateral claw the more rest this claw is going to get. Rest is one of the most common pieces of advice you hear from your doctor and it is also very effective for lame cows. Some people are worried about making the lateral claw thin. It feels like you make the cow even more

tender when she has a sole thickness not much more than the thickness of a piece of paper. The thing is that we are reducing the weight on the claw with a thin sole. If we make both claws thin we are possibly going to end up with a problem. However, cows are very resilient. Having thin soles is not necessarily a problem to them unless we make them walk long distances over rough tracks. If we have made the lateral claw thin and yet we don’t have a lot of height difference between the medial and lateral claw we can artificially raise the lateral claw by gluing a wooden block under the medial claw. The other thing we need to do is let the air get to the wound. We do this by opening up the wound. We trim

Secondly, cows that have kicked off their cups before being milked out and are retained on the platform are re-cupped after having been teat sprayed on the first revolution. Fonterra requires these sprayed cups to be washed in compliant water and sprayed teats washed and dried before being re-cupped. Freeriding cows can be accidentally recupped after being sprayed by machine or hand. This will especially pose a greater risk if the freeriders are freshly calved colostrum cows and the milk harvester is inexperienced. Everybody knows that these cows have swollen udders which look as if they have not been milked out. Staff at this time of the year are often exhausted from dealing with on-the-farm calving demands which can also contribute to the problem. Any farmer who is spraying cows on the platform whether by machine or hand is at risk. Machines spray every cow regardless and the capacity for

human error is high in a repetitive job like this. The only fool-proof solution is to spray cows after they have left the milking platform. Mr Carey says “For farmers who already have their sheds set up for platform teat spraying and don’t want to make a change we have developed a device that interrupts the signal to the teat sprayer, causing it not to spray if the cow is being retained on the platform for any reason. This can be retro-fitted to most existing automatic systems that have a cow retention apparatus.” This device has been developed in response to Fonterra’s concerns regarding keeping farmers compliant with Animal Products Regulations 2005, while retaining a high standard of milk quality that is acceptable the world over. All systems need to fit within these regulations, with no compromise in reliability and performance. Mr Carey says, “Ultimately teat spraying in the exit race using a system such as the WETiT QD0 is the answer to compliance issues because it sprays cows that have left the milking environment and have no risk of being re-cupped.”

Wool shortage is real I’ve often heard in sale yards around the country a saying that goes something like ‘the one over is the place to be’, which is the auctioneer referring to the under bidder who is at that precise moment hesitating trying to make their mind up whether to bid one more time and be ‘the one over’.

Currently in the wool auction room, there is definitely a need for exporters to bid up to be ‘the one over’ because there is a real scramble for the relatively smallish volumes of wool being catalogued every couple of weeks. A realisation amongst wool exporters and processors that New Zealand wool is in short supply has created a lift in wool prices, with the latest auction, prior to writing, surging upward to the tune of between 7% and 12% compared to a week earlier. Add to that the price improvements experienced during August and the real market price has lifted during a six or eight week period by somewhere up to 23% which is, in anyone’s language, substantial. Even better is that the ‘base’ from where the market began to improve was well ahead of prices ruling at a similar time last year, in most cases, allowing prices to reach their highest point for around 18 months. Prices for all wool types improved significantly over the past month at auction with minimal wool passedin for failing to reach grower reserve prices. Strong support from exporters was shown to most crossbred types and, by the end of August when weekly Christchurch auctions ended in favour of fortnightly events reflecting the smaller volumes coming forward, prices for crossbred types had lifted to levels ‘well north’ of 500 cents clean for most good style fleece wools measuring finer than around 38 micron, and only just

under that level for coarser micron types. Longer second-shear and earlyshorn types reached levels about 20c clean below fleece and shorter genuine second-shear types were fetching a further 30c to 40c less again. However the first (for the month) North Island auction held in Napier on September 5 saw the market for all types leap ahead, particularly for second-shear wools with lifts of 30c to 40c narrowing the gap between these and full-length fleece which lifted by around 20c to 30c. Oddment types throughout August and into early September once again drew splendid support from the exporting trade with prices extreme in many cases. The fine wool season began in earnest in August with a number of well grown merino, halfbred and quarterbred types coming forward. These also drew great support from the trade and prices were in most cases directly comparable to Australian auction prices. Some lines received better prices in NZ than in Australia on a same day type-for-type basis, and NZ based exporters bid freely to secure a slice of the action. By the end of the month the fine wool market had enjoyed tremendous increases, both here and across the ditch, once again a reflection of the small quantities available, from both countries, to processors. With wool prices improving and the outlook for lamb meat seemingly also about to improve for this year’s crop, the sheep farming industry may well be able to recover some of the previous season’s losses. As mentioned in last month’s editorial, there does not appear to be any current reason that the wool market should suddenly collapse and, in my humble opinion, if any grower has wool to sell on the ‘spot market’ at present the only place to sell with the confidence that maximum exposure will be secured is in the auction arena, for two reasons — 1) the shortage of wool is real, and 2) who knows what the price should be? That’s my view.

The town of Hunterville, in the foothills of the North Island’s Central Plateau, is known for its rugged scenery, its isolation — and the monument which graces its main street. It’s not a bronze statue of one of the town’s founding fathers, or a local lad risen to greatness, however. It’s a statue of the Kiwi farmer’s best friend — the Huntaway farm dog. There are estimated to be over 200,000 working dogs in New Zealand, making it possible since pioneering times for farmers to run large herds across our uniquely challenging terrain. Dogs such as the Huntaway, the Blue Heeler (imported from Australia, but more than welcome here) and the iconic Border Collie (immortalised by comic artist Murray Ball) have helped shape rural New Zealand, in much the same way that dogs in general have helped shape the world. Archaeologists recently discovered the partial skeleton of a dog, buried in a cave in northern Iraq which dates back to 10,000 BC. This was no wolf — tests prove that this animal was bred to possess a bigger brain, a shorter, wider jaw and smaller fangs — all traits of a farmer’s dog. It’s no coincidence that at this time, human beings made the change from

In a recent farm journal article, ‘vets are perplexed by cows becoming sick and dying because of phosphorus deficiency despite high levels in the soil. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.
