Nineteen-year-old Mitchel Hoare, a senior cadet at Waipaoa Station in the Poverty Bay district won first place in the under-22 age group. Hunterville-based Katey Craig (21), a junior shepherd at Otiwhiti Station, was ranked best female competitor overall. The two-day challenge was held in Auvergne in south, central France. The pair competed against shepherds from 15 other countries in this international test of sheep farming skills. Mitchell grew up on a 400ha drystock farm in the King Country and is a member of the Te Kuiti Young Farmers Club. He takes home a 1,500 Euro cheque in prize-money from the competition. A change of career plans saw Katey take up training as a shepherd at Otiwhiti Station. She initially thought working as a veterinarian would be her ideal career choice.

Katey’s family own a sheep and beef farm in the backblocks of Taranaki, where she grew up. Her family also own and lease a few blocks round Taranaki, running an overall total of close to 14,400 stock units. Katey worked as a wool handler in Western Australia before taking up a cadetship at Otiwhiti. It was after much encouragement from her employer Charlie Duncan that Katey decided to take part in the preliminary round of the World Young Shepherds Challenge. This competition was held at Lincoln University in July. Katey said she attributes her success to her family, friends, employers, and tutors for their day-to-day teachings and help in preparations for the competitions. Beef + Lamb New Zealand Farmer Council national chair Martin Coup accompanied Mitchel and Katey to France.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

A JOURNEY INTO THE

wonders of herbs BY DENISE GUNN

BY DENISE GUNN Growing up on a north Taranaki farm amongst animals, and native flora and fauna, fostered an interest and curiosity in nature for natural therapist Shirley Olsen.

I

t wasn’t until Shirley left high school and began work in a garden centre that her interest in herbs developed. Taking care of the herb section was part of her job, and she found these plants particularly intriguing and enchanting. “A seed had been planted and I was on a journey, with a desire to discover more,” said Shirley. Initially it was the herbs with highly unusual names that caught Shirley’s attention. “Fascinating names like mugwort, wormwood, horsetail, and soapwort sparked my interest and I wanted to know more.” “However when I delved into books about these weird, wacky herbs, it was also interesting to note that even those herbs relegated to be common, also held some pretty interesting history.” Shirley said although common

herbs were sprinkled onto all manner of foods, these plants also had other beneficial properties. Further knowledge was gathered through chatting to older people about their childhood and the remedies their mothers used. “Experiences with remedies like onions and honey for a sore throat, or soap and sugar poultices on a boil were shared.” Correspondence courses were also useful. “I found herbs and healing with plants fascinating,” said Shirley. “Not only were there the common herbs like parsley and chives, but there were the weeds around us, as well as trees and shrubs.” Shirley recalls asking an older nurseryman who grew all types of herbs, if he had some chickweed. He replied with a laugh that he hoped not as he thought he had pulled it all out. “Indeed it is a common little weed that

my shampoo soap.” Shirley’s shampoo soap contains castor oil, olive oil, lavender and rosemary. I wash my hair with it, then rinse with a blend of cider vinegar and herbs, sometimes infused with lemon peel, lemon juice, chamomile flowers, rosemary leaves, lavender flowers or southernwood.” A cream with calendula and lavender is used to heal an assortment of minor skin irritations, and a healing blend of bush plants helps heal stubborn skin conditions. “I still make lots of things, depending on what is needed,” said Shirley. “Some people might make a batch of scones — I might make an ointment from weeds.” Shirley has combined her love of nature, reading and photography into producing desktop everyday calendars

with a daily uplifting message. She said through making the calendar perpetual, it can be used to inspire for many years. “It is to inspire us to take a closer look at the little things in life and in nature, to remind us in a positive way

Close to 30 years ago, Shirley began making soap and since then has made many types of products. “I think brewing things up is well and truly in my blood,” said Shirley. “I would rather make a batch of soap or a healing oil than prepare a threecourse meal.” Several of Shirley’s concoctions, suitable for everyday use and found in the Olsen household include soap, lip balm, sleep balm, and teething oil. “I don’t think I will ever run out of soap, and indeed would not be caught without a few of my old favourites like

ow some of those dogs, in good health but no longer able to cope with a full day’s work, are able to be rehomed through the newly-formed Taihape Vets Working Dog Rehoming Service. The service, recently established through Taihape Veterinary Services staff, acts as a go-between for current and prospective owners. Service administrators, veterinarian Becky Waghorn and veterinary nurse Laiken Ronowicz, have found the feedback very positive. Laiken said any farm dog that is either unsuited for the type of terrain they are currently working on, uninterested in working, or has an injury that prevents them from working full-time, is eligible for rehoming.

Current owners, who tend to be clients of Taihape Veterinary Services, are encouraged to phone the clinic if they have a dog to rehome. Laiken said the Taihape area has a large farm working dog population and there is a ready supply of faithful, old dogs that can no longer keep up

the rigour of everyday work. “Unfortunately, there is a relatively short time frame for this sort of hill country work — often only to about seven or eight years.” Dogs are then given a free health check at the clinic and the dog’s work capabilities are discussed between staff and the owner. Information and photos are uploaded to the service’s facebook page, along with the owner’s contact number. The owner can be contacted directly and decides who the dog will be rehomed with. “Ultimately it is the owner who knows the dog best and can therefore make the best decisions in this regard,” said Laiken. Prospective owners also contact the clinic looking for a certain type of dog. The service is then able to direct them to farmers who may have a dog that will suit them. Dogs have been rehomed through the service to retired farmers with small stock numbers where only light work is required, and to lifestyle blocks. Laiken said a lot of these dogs can’t cope with

Dogs are successfully rehomed th rough the Taihape Vets Working Dog Rehomi ng Service hill country anymore but are perfectly capable of light work on flatter ground. “We also have had a younger dog that has been very successfully rehomed to a family with young children — not working but on a lifestyle block.” “One new owner just wanted a companion when out and about checking stock and missed having a working dog,” she said. The Taihape Working Dogs Rehoming Service aims to prevent many working dogs from being euthanised when they are no longer able to complete a full day’s work. “It can be hard for clients who have a

real bond with their ‘workmates’, so having an alternative for them has been greatly appreciated.” Laiken said to see these dogs go to a new home is fantastic. “Clients often feel bad leaving the older dogs that are still keen, in the kennel.” “So it is great for them to see these dogs leading more enriched lives with new owners,” she said. Prospective owners are sought throughout New Zealand. Contact the clinic on 06 388 0863 or visit Taihape Vets Working Dog Rehoming Service facebook page.

Prepared to weather the hard knocks by Andy Bryenton

The Polaris Ranger has proven a hit on Kiwi farms, with its combination of utility, safety and economical power. In both petrol and diesel powered forms, the tough side-by-side UTVs have become a fixture of the rural landscape, spawning many imitators and contenders for the crown. That’s why Polaris have engaged in some serious research before unveiling their new Ranger 570 — a machine which they say sets a new benchmark. To do this, they haven’t turned to the lab or to a specially designed wind tunnel — not even a closed racetrack. They’ve instead taken in feedback from actual working farmers, listening to the demands of our terrain and our hard-asnails rural conditions. They’ve been told — loudly — that a machine fit for parks maintenance or a hunting jaunt along a tidy trail is likely to take a hammering when subjected to the knocks, bumps, hard labour and muddy winters which are sure to be thrown at any serious farming tool. What has come out of this process is new from the ground up. Polaris begin by strengthening the chassis and suspension components with thick, heavy duty steel for endurance, and easy-access grease fittings for quick maintenance.

SAFETY FIRST

From the winning formula of the Polaris Ute super-ATV they have brought in four-wheel descent control, a safe and sure-footed way to tackle steep and slippery terrain. Ground clearance is higher, suspension travel longer, engine power up by 10 percent, and power steering is now standard. The core of the Ranger’s new incarnation is a powerful 567cc engine producing 44 horsepower, all fed to the ground through a clever four-wheel drive system and those grippy, knobbly tyres. And, although it will soon be covered in proper Kiwi mud, it’s not a bad looking beast either, in fire-engine red trim. Polaris burst onto the scene with their original Ranger, carving out a niche as a versatile working man’s UTV and winning fans with no-nonsense performance on the farm. This new iteration of the Ranger stays true to the old rule, and doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any indications. But it does improve on what is already a popular package, and its ‘heavy duty’ rural focus is sure to be welcomed by those who now see the UTV as a farming necessity.

ADVERTORIAL

New rules, new opportunities by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Like the Berlin Wall, the chemical wall is crumbling. The move away from the chemical age has begun as new rules, regulations and compliance kicks in, bringing us all into line with the new consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. Fortunately, Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers designed to remineralise the soil and increase soil biota; ultimately bringing health and vitality back to the soil for better quality production. Recently Rodale Institute launched a global campaign to generate public awareness of the soil’s ability to reverse climate change by increasing the health of the soil through regenerative agriculture. The campaign is calling for the restructure of our global food system with the goal of reversing climate change through photosynthesis and biology. The campaign was penned by Rodal Institute an independent, non-profit agricultural research station recognised as the birthplace of organics in the USA (rodaleinstitute.org/reversing-climate-

change). Rodale’s white paper states “we would sequester more than 100 percent of current annual CO2 emissions with a switch to widely available and inexpensive organic management practices which we term regenerative organic agriculture”. Mark Smallwood, executive director of Rodale Institute said that founder J.I Rodale had a vision so ambitious that many people wrote him off at the time. Almost 75 years later the organic movement is exploding with growth and fierce determination and the stakes are a lot higher in 2014. Rodale saw that agriculture was heading in a dangerous direction through the widespread adoption of synthetic chemicals and the industrialisation of farming. He attempted to prevent that transition. We no longer have the luxury of prevention.

Agrissentials CEO, John Morris is excited about the future possibilities away from chemical fertiliser dependancy.

We are in the dire situation of needing a cure, a reversal. The massive awakening itself is the catalyst to the cure, the future is underfoot. It’s all about the health of the soil. Agrissentials have been a part of this new farming revolution for the past twenty years; helping farmers nationwide convert to a natural system whilst optimising production and continuing to fight the good fight by looking after the soil. Topsoil is, most probably, the most valuable resource on our planet as all life is dependent upon it for survival. Agrissentials’ focus is bringing life and minerals to the soil with our multi-mineral, microbial rich, live, living fertilisers. With good levels of microbes in your soil you will have good levels of worms, beautiful, marvellous worms. Farmers using our fertilisers have abundant worm life, between the worms and the micro-organisms you have a recycling team that will keep increasing topsoil and improving the farm. Farmers tell us that within 14 to 20 days of the herd leaving the paddock all cow pats are recycled back into topsoil, increasing soil water retention quality, enhancement of mineral potency through worm castings improving phosphate levels by 700%, potassium by 1100%, nitrogen by 500%, increasing soil drainage capacity and mineral retention making the Regional Councils happy with the soil and the minerals holding their ground and looking after the environment. The time to move is now and the change is not only painless but the benefits derived from working with nature are abundant. PLUS Agrissentials have a fantastic October giveaway: every tonne of Rok Solid, 200 L of Oceans 100, or 2 x tonnes of Roketlime purchased this month goes in the draw to win a year’s worth of petrol! “While fer tiliser programmes, and the nutrients that are applied, vary throughout the year, it is worth considering the influence of increased livestock feed demand and their metabolic stresses in spring.” “During calving and lambing we advise farmers to adhere to best agricultural practice when applying fertiliser. “During spring, livestock maternal instinct means that rather than normally avoiding pasture with fertiliser residue, they may consume this pasture which puts these animals at risk, particularly from fluorosis. “It is good common sense to either spell stock from recently fertilised pasture or fertilise just before rainfall,” he said. “Spelling after nitrogen and phosphate fertiliser has been applied ensures the plants can produce the biggest response, and that less nutrient is transferred to dung or urine patches.” The following five-point

Shepherds gearing up for Shemozzle by Denise Gunn

The annual Shepherds Shemozzle, held during the Hunterville Huntaway Festival, is no ordinary race and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. Now into its 17th year, this unique festival developed from a concept discussed by a few of the locals. The event has grown to become a permanent fixture on the rural events calendar, attracting competitors and spectators from all over New Zealand. Fitness levels are tested as shepherds and their Huntaway dogs race up and down hills and tackle obstacles over a 3km challenging course. Strong stomachs are also required for the compulsory delicacies on the menu which can include sheep eyeballs, huhu grubs and warm beer. Last year’s winner of the Shepherds Shemozzle and the men’s section was Troy MacDonald and his dog Bruce, with Rangitikei shepherd Jamie Howie and her dog Phlex taking out the women’s section. The winner of the master’s section was Jonathan Smailes and his dog Bitter. Festival secretary Claire Clare said there have been more entries received prior to the day for this year’s shemozzle. Shepherds can still enter on the day although the shemozzle is limited to 100 competitors.

The Children’s Shemozzle is open to entrants aged between 9-13 years of age -the Inter-School Shemozzle caters to school teams, and the recently introduced Teen Shemozzle is designed for teenagers up to 18 years of age. No dogs are required for these events. “We have one entrant coming all the way from Queenstown for the Children’s Shemozzle,” said Mrs Clare. “Entries sold out within 18 days of opening this year due to now being online.” New to the programme this year is a Super Family Mystery Event, and a Huntaway Dog Demonstration. The annual Shearing Contractors Challenge will run after the races. A range of entertainment will be held during the day along with quality craft stalls. Official merchandise will be for sale at the Hunterville Huntaway Festival stall. “Come along and see what is on offer for the viewers, children and competitors,” said Mrs Clare. This year’s Hunterville Huntaway Festival is scheduled for Saturday, November 1 starting at noon.

This year’s Hunterville Huntaway Festival will be held on November 1

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Why older cows become lame I once was asked why older, high-producing cows become lame more often than younger ones. That is a good question, but not always accurate. Some farmers get a lot of lame heifers as well. This has a lot to do with the different stresses on the different animal age groups. Let’s look at the older, high-producing cows. What is going on for those animals? Well, to start off with, they are older and high-producing. A highproducing cow is under a lot more stress than a low-producing cow. You may have heard of the comparison between a cow and an athlete — the better the athlete is performing the more accurately their diet and lifestyle needs to be balanced. If not, it will show in the end results. This is the same for a cow. A highproducing cow will need a more accurate and balanced diet than a low-producing cow. The big difference between a cow and an athlete is that the athlete can choose to go back to a normal, mediumactive lifestyle. A cow can’t. A cow is genetically programmed to produce milk. She does that for her offspring. We may think she does it for us but the cow doesn’t know what happens with the milk after she has been in the cowshed. We have tricked her into producing the milk as she believes that it is for her calf, but in reality we use it for totally different purposes. So if we have managed to breed a cow that is programmed to produce a

lot more milk for ‘her calf’ then that is what she wants to do because her offspring is important to keep the species alive. So, if her diet is not of a standard that she needs then she will suffer from that in other ways than just a lower milk production as the production of milk is so important to her. Another issue with older cows is that they have had more opportunity to get laminitis because they have been alive for longer. When a cow suffers from laminitis, her claws are growing out of balance, therefore she ends up with the wrong weight distribution on her claws. This is evident with a bigger and a more damaged outer claw. These cows are in need of preventative trimming. This is where the outer claw needs to be trimmed back to the same size as the inner claw to get an even weight bearing distribution. Just one trim will not fix it forever. The correct shaped and sized claw needs to be maintained just the same as one visit to the dentist won’t keep your teeth healthy forever. Trimming is an ongoing procedure which is a cheap remedy to a big problem. High-producing cows need more care, but because they produce more, they are worth it.

experience to provide oversight of the design, fabrication and construction of our dairy effluent storage tanks. “As tougher regulations around effluent storage take hold throughout New Zealand, our team is looking forward to assisting dairy farmers to choose the best solution for their operations.” “Our customer feedback consistently tells us that they appreciate our robust, well-engineered, durable effluent storage systems, and that they also appreciate that the tanks take as little as three to five days to install with complete professional project management offered as part of the package. “Taranaki farmers will also be interested to know that Tasman Tanks also include fully engineered mechanical ground anchors that will significantly reduce the risk associated with freak extreme wind events.” In addition to various management roles in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, Mr Hemmings also worked in Taranaki for 10 years as a senior consultant with what was Farmers Fertiliser Ltd — now Ravensdown. “I think I walked over most farms in Taranaki — two or three times so

Our delicate dairy economy A drop in dairy prices of 48% from February this year is now impacting on the New Zealand economy, with economists now predicting Fonterra’s $5.30 payout prediction will drop again to $4.80 if there is not a lift in product values by March of next year. The Northland regional economy, with a drop of $3.70 per kilogram of milk solids would face a disastrous shortfall of in excess of $370 million. It has been said that for every dollar a dairy farmer receives, it adds three times more value by the time it goes through the community. How the experts work that out, I don’t know, but if it is true there would be an impact in the Northland region of $1 billion. I attended a Fonterra farmer meeting held in Northland this week and the big surprise to me was the small number of suppliers who attended the meeting, in light of the decline of dairy farmer fortunes. It was a pity because in spite of all the bad news caused by the

volatility in the world markets, I believe Fonterra is doing a lot of positive things to increase its market share throughout the world, avoiding a major reliance solely on the Chinese market. Joint ventures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia are turning Fonterra, since its formation from being an $11 billion earner to a $22 billion earner, making it, I believe, the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy. Some farmers at the meeting expressed their extreme concern at Fonterra continuing to undertake huge costly development programmes overseas when dairy farmer payouts are now suffering a serious decline.

WATER STORAGE PROBLEMS?

Farmers expressed criticism at Fonterra spending some $23 million in their new Farm Source development which will include the restructuring of its RD1 stores throughout New Zealand. Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey in explaining this development said that this Farm Source development would mean better buying power for Fonterra shareholders and suppliers, including greater fuel and electricity savings and discounts on purchases. He explained that the current market volatility was caused by the European and the United States’ ban on exports to Russia and this was a great concern because Russia is the European community’s biggest purchaser of dairy products. Now this European product can be diverted to other world markets, putting pressure on Fonterra’s market

share. There is also currently a weak demand for dairy products from China. While we are mindful of the current concerns, we know the industry has never been without financial risk or market fluctuations. It is important that we dairy farmers support Fonterra’s farmer co-operative ownership structure and maintain the initiative and enterprise that is required to achieve the outcomes we all desire. “When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite

New DWN events manager, Kym Gibson

DWN’s newest regional convener co-ordinator, Megan Edmeades

“It is a credit to the board to have a person with Justine’s knowledge of agriculture and governance experience at the helm.” Justine says she is excited about her new role. “This is my first chair opportunity and I’m really looking forward to the challenge. The network has come through a significant development stage under Michelle’s leadership and it is poised to move into its next phase of growth and organisational development.” Kym Gibson is looking forward to learning more about the ‘diverse and dynamic’ organisation that is DWN. “When I saw the role advertised it really appealed to me as good fit. I have come from eight years working for Life Trust so I really understand

the joys and complexities of working for a non-profit organisation. It’s what I know and love.” Kym aims to offer high quality and high impact events for DWN and she is a big believer that ‘love is in the details’. Megan Edmeades, who has stepped up from her volunteer role as East Waikato regional coconvener, says she is looking forward to being a part of the positive changes that are taking place for DWN. “The co-ordinator role is really about supporting our regional conveners and making sure they have access to quality resources and people. We are starting to do things in a different way, which is a real positive.”

Compression socks work by reducing the diameter of distended veins in the legs, which results in a speeding up of venous blood flow, the compression is tightest at the ankles and becomes less constrictive towards the knees — this graduated
