“Taratahi is seeing an increase in demand from all over the world for our authentic agricultural onfarm education model,” said Mr Graves. Visitors from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Indonesia, China and the Solomon Islands were at the Wa i r a r a p a Campus recently and Taratahi was also visited by five Indian Parliamentarians. All had strong interests in agriculture and education, immediately seeing the business opportunities in working with Taratahi. “The visitors came for a range of different experiences, from short visits to understand what we do and can offer — both on and off-shore. In the case of the Solomon Islands, a group of 10 teachers will learn various aspects of dairying over a period of four weeks,” Mr Graves says. “Taratahi is recognised as experts in our field and delivers the latest in information, best practice, and practical skills in real life authentic contexts. We are also leaders in providing other countries with the skills and expertise to create institutions and deliver courses that mirror what we do in New Zealand.” Sixty students and seven staff from the English Language Training Organisation participated. “This is the organisation’s second visit to us this year. Members of the group come from a range of countries and this year are here to focus on sales and marketing, agricultural/horticultural practices and technology. They are all representatives from the Ministries in their countries ranging from
Arthur Graves Taratahi chief executive
commerce, foreign affairs, planning and investment through to agriculture and rural development.” Taratahi also hosted a delegation from the China Mengniu Dairy Company, one of China’s leading dairy companies and the Chinese Veterinary Medical Association. The group are in New Zealand looking at dairy farm performance and pasture based farming systems. This pilot project is part of the NZ/ China Agriculture Growth Partnership and China is looking at New Zealand’s education and science and technology systems that underpin our farming systems. The next stage of the pilot is for staff members to come and study at Taratahi. “The Mengniu visit in particular, is a very promising development,” says Mr Graves.

Icon was selected on plant characteristics including improved disease and pest resistance. Icon is a very good dual purpose hay, silage and grazing cultivar because of its resistance to grazing which it was bred for, from selections of fields grazed by sheep and cattle. Icon has low crowns that will tolerate closer grazing, particularly by sheep.

Keep accurate records Farmers are urged to commit to getting employee records and contracts right after large fines were issued during a Labour Inspectorate investigation into a dairy farm. Federated Farmers Bronwyn Muir says it is essential farmers keep up-to-date contracts and wage and time records for all employees. “Agriculture needs to attract a good quality, motivated workforce to drive productivity gains and to improve performance. Farmers need to provide workplaces which will attract those people. “Getting the basics of employment law right is the foundation to build that attractive work environment.” Federated Farmers regularly holds employment workshops which have been well attended and promote best practice to its members. Legally compliant contracts and employment agreements are available for purchase from Federated Farmers for members and non-members that meet all the requisite employment legislation. “Legislation does change over time and it’s important to keep on top of changes and keep everything up-todate,” says Ms Muir. “We have a large number of contracts, templates and policies available to assist our members to remain safe and compliant employers. It’s better to pay for advice and be compliant than pay a fine. “We all need to be compliant for the good of the industry and those who work in it.” Any farmer who is unsure whether their records and documents are
compliant should seek assistance immediately. All farmers are encouraged to visit the Workplace Action Plan site for more information. The Workplace Action Plan is an industry action plan developed by DairyNZ and Federated Farmers to assist dairy farming businesses to adopt good workplace management practices. The plan describes what a quality work environment in the dairy industry might look like and sets out the coordinated actions and commitments of the industry. It also provides practical advice and support to employers and employees. The benefits of a quality workplace are considerable. Good work environments will Bronwyn Muir, Federated Farmers provincial president help attract and keep the motivated and talented people needed in the industry. Good work environments are productive, rewarding, safe and enjoyable for all people on farm — employers and employees. Good work environments mean you can reap the rewards in the good times and help each other during the tough ones. DairyNZ and Federated Farmers are clear that it is people who will drive our dairy business success — economic, (06) 756 7228 environmental and social.

uckland-born Liz came across Pihama Lavender listed for sale on the internet while she was living and working in Melbourne. She decided to buy the property and after 27 years overseas, returned to the region in 2014. Liz had previously lived in Taranaki, working as an economics teacher at New Plymouth Girls’ High School. “I came here firstly for the lifestyle and the business side of it has unfolded,” she said. The former Pihama Dairy Factory, built in 1897, is situated
on the property. In 1922 a fire burnt the original timber building to the ground. It was rebuilt in concrete and the factory produced cheese and butter until 1967. After the factory was decommissioned, the building was used as a piggery until most of the roof was burnt away in a second fire in 1977. In 1983 Egmont Dairy Company’s former maintenance manager David Knapman, and his wife Louise, bought the factory and lived there for 30 years. The couple raised their family on the property whilst renovating. They built

two dwellings and planted the first lavender plants. The still, used by the Knapman’s to make lavender oil, is now used by Liz to produce both oil and hydrosol (commonly known as lavender spray mist). Liz has made adjustments to the still and completed a number of cosmetic changes to both the main dwelling and the cottage. “Since I have purchased the property, I have replaced the original asbestos roof with a colour-steel one,” said Liz. The cottage is rented out for accommodation and Liz has established a shop and gallery. “I have also done a lot of work replanting lavender and redeveloping the gardens.” The Grosso variety of lavender is grown on the property which produces good quality oil. In addition to producing oil and hydrosol, Liz buys in bases for gardeners’ hand cream, lotion and lip balm. “I add my own oil and package them under the Pihama Lavender label.” Liz said lavender is a hardy plant with modest requirements. “It does like a well-drained site and does best without lots of weeds growing around the plant. The plants also prefer an alkali soil and no compost. The plants live longer if they are kept well-pruned at the end of the each season.” The current number of 2,000 lavender plants continues to grow as Liz expands the planting. Although not certified as an organic producer, Liz grows her

The entrance to the former factory has a native garden area plants using organic principles and values being a small boutique producer. She finds satisfaction in being able to produce a product from start to finish. “I can account for the integrity of the product.” Liz said as a small producer, the processes she uses are sometimes labour intensive and lacking in high technology. “While this has charm, it’s also taxing on the body at times and there are some parts of the production which could be streamlined. I find that no matter how fast I can harvest, my still can only deal with so much in a day. One parttime employee helps with weeding, garden maintenance, the shop, and showing visitors around.” Liz plans to
increase production through planting more lavender and replacing some of the older plants. She is also developing the property for use as a wedding and party venue. “In the long term, I would like to continue work in all areas of this business.” This year Pihama Lavenders will open the gates for the second time as part of the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival. “I have already taken bookings for return guests so am looking forward to showing them the work that has been done in the last year. Pihama Dairy Factory has a wonderful atmosphere and many visitors come as much for the history of the place as for the lavender and garden” said Liz.

LONG-STANDING SUPPORT FOR
JERSEY CLUB • BY DENISE GUNN •
Founded in 1909, the Hawera Jersey Club is the oldest Jersey breed club and possibly the longest-running club, of any cattle breed, in New Zealand.
W
ith current membership numbering 38, the club is still going strong with plenty of support. Membership is made up of breeders, life members who have sold their herds and farms, as well as younger Jersey cattle enthusiasts still at school. Four generations of the Tosland family have supported the club, with three of those currently involved. Club secretary Kelvin Tosland joined the club close to 50 years ago when he was at primary school. His father, Alex, is currently the club’s patron at the age of 87 years. Alex’s father was also a club member — his four children, along with his
grandchildren, all milk Jersey cows. Several club shows are held each year including a two-day show in March. Kelvin said this show is a main event and the club’s annual on-farm show. “Members visit farms to view the best cows in each age group presented for judging.” Club member Cliff Shearer said the show is a highly anticipated event. “Most of the club members attend all the farms that enter each year and share much discussion and meals during the days.” The club also organises a variety of events with meetings, social outings and training days for members. the club show, sees cows judged on Breeding Worth (BW), Production Worth (PW) and type. Fifty points are awarded to the first placegetter of each section with the totals added together to find an overall winner. Kelvin said there is also an annual heifer inspection visit at the end of September. “Members travel around other members’ farms over two days, checking out the crop of daughters from new and interesting bulls.” The club holds a two-year-old heifer judging contest at the Tosland’s Kelland Jersey Stud too. Members are invited to judge five heifers for type and production, and then the marks are compared with an official judge’s results. With several leading farmers in the club having won regional and national awards, members are able to tap into their knowledge. “Our members farm and breed in different ways, and all get on well with good camaraderie,” said Kelvin. A number of members have also bred top bulls that have made the Premier Sires team at Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC). Club member Tony Landers is a current director of JerseyNZ. He owns the Glenui herd which is one of the highest ranked herds for BW in New Zealand. Kelvin said Jerseys have a better temperament, higher pregnancy rate and less lameness than other breeds. “Jersey cows outperform all breeds and crossbreeds on a per hectare basis.” He said Jersey cows produce 13 per cent more milk fat per hectare or feed unit, and 8 per cent more milk solids per hectare or feed unit than Holstein Friesians. “They also have a lower incidence of mastitis and their udders hold up better

There is less pasture damage in wet conditions too.” Fourteen trophies, each with their own history, are awarded annually to the winners of the club’s different events. “Some of these trophies would be more than 50 years old,” said Kelvin. One of the trophies is a cream jug purchased in Jersey Island by former member Jim Thwaites. Jim donated this trophy for the member who has worked hard to promote the club during the previous year. The club president decides the winner. “We have a good club spirit and a shared interest in Jerseys, we are all trying to improve our herds,” said Kelvin. The Hawera Jersey Club was also one of the first cattle clubs in the world to have a Facebook page where
member’s herds, scenes and events are showcased for the world’s farmers to see.

SPOTLIGHT ON
STRATFORD
Gateway to the mountain by Denise Gunn
Nestled in the heart of Taranaki country, Stratford was originally established as a rural support service centre. Lush dairy land surrounds the township whilst steeper hill country to the east carries sheep and beef farms. With the majestic backdrop of Mount Taranaki in the distance, Stratford provides a gateway to the mountain, beaches and the Forgotten World Highway. Located on the busy junction of SH3 and the Forgotten World Highway, Stratford always appears to be bustling with activity at any time of year. As locals go about their daily routines and visitors wander around the township, thousands of motorists also drive through the main street each day. Stratford takes its name from Shakespeare’s birthplace and many of the town’s street names come from his works. The township’s main street features New Zealand’s largest

Country comes to town over the weekend of November 26–27 when the Stratford A&P Show opens its gates. Founded in 1910, the show has traditionally catered for a variety of livestock competitions, drawing competitors from all over the North Island. Show secretary Christine Hughes said the show’s emphasis is also on entertaining families.

“We realise livestock competitions are important as well as entertaining the whole family.” The show holds a variety of competitions for horses, dairy and beef cattle, and pigs. A calf club section and pet lamb class also feature. A new competition introduced this year in the dairy livestock section, will follow a similar format to the calf club contest.

RURAL CONTRACTORS Behind the scenes With agriculture the heartbeat of the New Zealand economy, there is a massive investment in plant and machinery to improve production in our largest export sector. Be it beef or dairy, grain or fruit, vegetable or value-added processed food from a myriad sources, our primary produce has acquired a deserved reputation in the international marketplace for quality. And quality starts with the basic production line — the land. Rural contractors and agrichemical applicators are working to make sure our agricultural products stay world leaders. The aforementioned large investment in machinery, together with health, safety and environmental requirements, means that having the right skills and knowledge is more important than ever. InfraTrain, formerly known as the New Zealand Contracting Industry Training
Organisation Ltd. has worked with the rural contracting industry to develop a range of qualifications which recognise these skills, and represent best practice. Qualifications are suitable for people at all levels — from those just starting out, or moving from a different industry, to those in supervisory or management roles in rural contracting. The National Certificate in Agrichemical Application has been developed for those involved in applying agrichemicals across the board. This qualification, plus at least 200 hours of practical experience, is required for a registered applicator’s certificate recognised by regional councils and is regarded as the benchmark for safe agrichemical application. • • • • • •

The mystery of irrigation Irrigation is the black art of replacing water which has been removed from the ground by evapotranspiration (ET) through plants. This is part of how plants ingest their nutrients. moisture in the ground. Beware of stories telling you that a system allows you to get away with less application. They do exist but also require electronic monitoring and experience on the operator’s part. Keep water droplets as large as practicable. This is where you can save some water. Despite public perception, small sprinklers can easily have the same losses as large sprinklers, it’s just not so visible. The law of physics tells us when you expose water to warm air it evaporates. Large bodies of water (large droplets) have a greater mass to surface area than small bodies, so fine mist tends to evaporate more — keep the nozzle size up/nozzle pressure down, within reason! There’s no free lunch with irrigation, either you can have a cheap system with lots of running costs and maintenance or a more reasonably priced system but with better application evenness, better growth patterns, and easier and less time consuming management and maintenance. Often the principal cost
differences between the two are not proportional to the results. Clement (Clem) Powell of Irri-Max Ltd has been installing irrigation systems for over 20 years. Give him a call if you want more information on 0800 426 296. Next month — The Mystery of Pipelines.

Important points to know: NIWA have ET rates for your area, check their website. It will show rates as a graph through the year, summer obviously higher but ET is also determined by the atmosphere’s ability to absorb the moisture, so it is higher on windy days due to higher dispersal. Every millimetre of rain you need to apply daily requires 10,000 litres/ha, so if ET hits 5mm you need at least 50,000 litres every hectare, every day. That’s if you want the plant to really grow, not just look green. You need to match ET rate plus allowance for percolation through the soil (over irrigation) plus loss during irrigation, minus rainfall (if any). ET rates follow quite closely to available moisture rates so it is important to begin irrigating early enough as the plant growth will have checked by the time you notice it. Woody plants have a higher ET rate than leafy plants so kale ET will likely be more than chicory. Admittedly plants with deep roots will hang on longer, mostly in heavy soils but in the end need still water replacement. Irrigating methods are just that, management tools, don’t be fooled by the fancy promises, they can’t make your plant excel with less than ET rate — assuming you are trying to hold constant

Rivers plan leads to change The passing of the Waikato Healthy Rivers Plan will instil new impetus for farmers across the country to change the way they manage their farms in the future.

Yep!
Call 0800 475 877 Forward Farming Consultancy For Complete Effluent Management New Zealand Distributor of Slurry Bugs
Farmers of course, will be angry that the bureaucracy of regional councils will soon lead to another round of reasons to whip the living daylights out of them, as if they haven’t endured enough already. Federated Farmers will continue to do its political best to soften the blow and the public perception of farmers may drop a notch or two. This has caused me to climb to the top of the hill and look out at the big picture. Several pivotal questions come to light over this dilemma. • Do we really have a problem with our streams, rivers and lakes? Yes, we do. • Is there an excess of phosphates and nitrates leaching through our soils and into our waterways? Yes, there is. • Is it fair and just to blame the farmer for this mess? No, I do not believe that we should blame the farmer entirely. There are two factors contributing to the pollution of our waterways;
• Effluent management and cattle having access • Phosphate and nitrogen application compromising the plant’s ability to hold on to those nutrients. I do believe the industry has the first question under control and this does require direct input from the farmer. Compliance on rules and regulations under general circumstances should be the responsibility of the farmer. However, I believe the second question is another story! Fertiliser application and soil nutrient needs for pasture and cropping is generally a practice which farmers leave to a specialist. These specialists are called on by farmers to advise them on what they need to grow their grass and crops. Possibly 95 percent of fertiliser in New Zealand is sold by two large companies, Ballance and Ravensdown. Interestingly, it is rumoured that these two large companies have influence on the education of soil and fertiliser scientists
in New Zealand. I was impressed upon reading Ballance’s website to find that most of the specialists who are employed by them to advise and guide farmers what to buy, are very well educated indeed. While I was pouring another mug of coffee I got to thinking, what do these big companies make? Now I know why those environmentalists are so mad. Those companies have turned their well — educated scientists into salesmen! Farmers have been brainwashed and swear allegiance to these specialists who are now leaving them holding the can. It appears that this great science that has been taught needs an overhaul. Maybe it’s someone else’s turn. I hear a leading scientist is rambling on about some new science which he doesn’t understand. Maybe if he stopped communicating and listened, he might learn something! So just a gentle suggestion to councils: turn around and throw the stones the other way and give the farmers a break!

Battery aid for top performance Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphate build-up on internal lead plates and, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitaliser and Conditioner, this crust is very easy to treat. “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program. However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our program with 12 and 14 year-old batteries often still going.” “In fact our record battery life is 18 years old and still starting a tractor and after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia I think we may do better yet.” The recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphate build-up. Once treated a battery is is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. Prevention is the key — treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged.” Recharge is available at Farmlands or Gerard and Debbie will be at Christchurch A and P show again this year on site TP-20 and also the Camper Care Caravan show in Hardcastle Arena the week prior. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat

Summer surplus — the measure of success The official advice has been to arrange calving in July in order to maximise milk harvest before the end of December. This points up a lack of faith in summer pasture production.

Yet by discounting the value of summer growth, the potential available from one third of the lactation period is largely ignored. But long-term growth figures from the major dairying areas (with perhaps the exception of Canterbury) do not support the concept of unreliable and slow summer growth. Summer pasture production can be variable due to excess heat and lack of moisture however management practices often have the biggest impact. A lack of appreciation of summer growth potential by many farmers means a large chunk of low-cost production is possibly being squandered. Maximising the potential of midseason pasture is a case of working with reliable local measures. High fertility grasses go from vegetative to reproductive mode as soon as soil temperatures reach 20°C. In the Waikato, coastal Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, and Manawatu this happens the first week in November every year. Doubtless it’s a combination of factors, however the timing has been the same for at least the last 30 years. With increased stalk and seed head, grasses, particularly annuals, are less
digestible and stock intake reduces, with production declining accordingly. Clover, on the other hand, thrives in warmer temperatures and, being highly digestible as well as containing three to four times the calcium of grasses, it’s the ideal feed for maintaining milk solid production. Clover dominant pasture also maintains quality for a longer period, allowing the ideal 30-day grazing interval to be maintained from late December until autumn rain arrives, when the interval can be further lengthened. Pasture growth figures from two properties in the Edgecumbe region during the 08 — 09 season highlighted the difference between a conventionally fertilised property where 235kg N/ ha was applied, and a property using Functional Fertilisers total nutrient programme applying 25kgN/ha. Functional Fertiliser programmes include higher calcium inputs to help create the conditions that favour vigorous clover growth, along with required phosphorus, sulphur, potassium, and magnesium inputs. Although the Functional Fertiliser property grew a little less pasture in late winter and early spring, over November, December and January it grew on average 62.5kg DM/ha day, 74% more than the 35.8kg DM/ha for the conventionally fertilised property. Over the following three months of February, March, and April the Functional Fertiliser property grew an average of 44.8kg DM/ha, 55% more than the 28.8kg DM/ha for the conventional property. For the six months from
November 1 through to April 30, the difference in pasture production was a substantial 3,869kgDM/ha, or an average 21.3kgDM/ha of extra high quality milking tucker per day. For the season from June 1, 08 — May 31, 09 the Functional Fertiliser property grew a total of 16,187kg DM/ ha, compared to the conventionally fertilised property’s 12,895kg DM/ha. During last season (15–16) the growth difference between the two properties had widened to over 7,000kg DM/ha, with the conventionally fertilised property anchored at a similar level to the earlier year, and the Functional Fertiliser property growing 20,600kg DM/ha. So before dismissing the guy in the district busily making hay over summer as ‘under stocked’, give thought to the possibility that his animals may be producing significantly more milk each than those on neighbouring ‘conventional’ farms due to their consumption of high quality clover-rich pasture, and he was using his ‘surplus’ for winter supplement. His costs will also be less, as the requirement for fertiliser nitrogen is negligible as it’s being fixed free of charge by clover, and he farms with the comfort of knowing his feed supply over summer is largely guaranteed. The change to a Functional Fertiliser programme is surprisingly seamless, and October is the ideal time to make a conversion to a programme that is rapidly gaining the reputation as the future of pastoral farming. Organx™ — The New Way to Farm Nutrient rich soil produces nutrient dense food, bringing health and vitality to all life. Topsoil and water are the two most precious things we have on our planet, more precious than gold, silver or platinum. Without topsoil and water we cannot feed ourselves, so, it is paramount that we take good care of our topsoil and our water. Today, based on current agrochemical production methods, many experts are predicting that agricultural topsoil around the globe will be lost within the next 60 years. United Nations, Food & Agricultural Organisation, stated in 2015 — The International Year of the Soil, that soil is a nonrenewable resource. Its preservation is essential for food security and our sustainable future, it also commented that soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human life span. Here at Agrissentials we dispute that call. From anecdotal evidence recorded over an eight year period, we took 50mm topsoil on a clay base down to 250mm — 300mm of topsoil depth, just by applying our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers at two applications per year over Ralph Littler’s Dairy Farm in Ruawai, Northland. The agro-chemical fertilisers and sprays have a huge impact on microorganisms resulting in soil erosion
— according to Dr. Morgan Williams’ report to the Government in 2004 soil erosion from farms was calculated at 200 — 300 million tonnes of topsoil per year — that is not sustainable! However, don’t panic, Go Organx™! With our system you have the opportunity to set up your own topsoil regenerating and re mineralising system using Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich, certified ORGANX™ fertilisers. The new market is ORGANX™ and Agrissentials ORGANX™ system hold the key to the “X FACTOR” of soil health and soil wealth, with our live, living, certified BioGro fertilisers. Here is the opportunity to break the chains of chemical torture, to walk away from the agro-chemical system that is locking farmers into low price, commodity markets, and high price chemical rescue remedies, that no longer work — it’s a crazy chemical treadmill. The time is right for ORGANX™ with the consumer calling out for safe, certified, nutritiously rich food together with farmers beginning to look and understand that the best way to secure their farms and their farming future is to start working with mother nature instead of working against her and having to pay bag loads of money to the chemist for remedies that struggle to maintain production.
Roksolid Full Spectrum Fertiliser
The game is changing, the consumer has already changed and the farmers are recognising new opportunities to produce better quality food for better returns. The transition from agro-chemical to ORGANX™ is seamless; basically all that happens is to exchange synthetic, soluble, erosive chemical fertilisers for Agrissentials live, living, multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which bring
health and vitality back to the farm and back to the environment — now, how simple is that! New red meat strategy

BLNZ, meat exporters and marketers and industry stakeholders. “BLNZ will transition out of a market maintenance role in mature markets to focus on developing future growth opportunities, while meat companies will continue their efforts to maintain existing markets,” says Mr Parsons. Under the new direction BLNZ will be closing permanent offices in the United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan in favour of more flexible resources based in New Zealand. They will continue to have a base in China and the organisation will still maintain its own strong, international network and continue to work internationally with partner organisations including meat companies, Meat Industry Association, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. “This strategy does not affect the BLNZ office in Brussels where the focus on maintaining trade access arrangements and international relationships with our counterpart organisations in Europe is more important than ever. “Our established markets are still vitally important, however, responsibility for servicing and maintaining these markets will be managed primarily through our meat exporters using New Zealand red meat story collateral developed by BLNZ. The story of New Zealand farming and its farmers will be at the heart of Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s new market development strategy targeting new and emerging markets. Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons says development of a red meat sector story which captures the culture, values and integrity that’s long been associated with New Zealand sheep and beef farmers, will be an angle they aim to exploit in differentiating this country from its competitors in the international marketplace. “The story, building on New Zealand’s farming systems with free-range, grassfed livestock — farmed to the highest standards of animal welfare — will be authenticated through a national quality assurance programme, developed through the Red Meat Profit Partnership. This programme harmonises existing meat company QA programmes,” says Mr Parsons. “The New Zealand red meat story and national assurance programme will support meat companies’ own individual marketing strategies and will be a valuable resource for other partners like meat importers, distributors, retailers and food service operators, and government agencies.” This marketing strategy marks a change in direction for BLNZ’s market development programme. The farmer-funded organisation has worked collaboratively with the red meat sector to develop a long-term sector strategy with clearly defined roles for

that our exporters have deep commercial relationships developed over many years and are well placed to look after the market maintenance role. “We consulted widely over 12 months, running numerous focus groups and workshops and the result is quite a fundamental shift in approach, strongly supported by meat exporters and farmers. We are confident the new approach will drive greater impact for farmers on every levy dollar invested. While New Zealand’s beef and lamb products are well positioned in consumers’ minds, farm gate returns are still not satisfactory and an area we can influence is how we better position our products in consumers’ minds.”

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid80s who had arthritis in her shoulder

and hands. She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-yearold whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. How can Bettaflex help?
• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.
John Arts comments:
“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Looking at forestry The government plans to look anew at the nation’s trade policy as other countries offer more support to their forestry sectors. Trade Minister Todd McClay plans to tilt policy to focus on squeezing more from existing free trade agreements rather than simply pursuing new deals. He argues this will be more effective in pulling down non-tariff barriers and other measures that protect a domestic industry. Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association chairman Brian Stanley told a regional meeting in Wellington that refresh needs to be ‘urgent’ and ‘substantial’ because other nations are giving more support to their industries. “In the past, New Zealand has been at the forefront of global free trade, but we need to accept New Zealand’s original drive hasn’t been adopted to the degree it needs to be,” said Mr Stanley said. “Protectionism is rapidly on the rise again.” One of those threats highlighted at the meeting was from Japan, which plans to expand production of crosslaminated timber (CLT) to 500,000 cubic metres by 2024 through government subsidies for new factories, import tariffs and export subsidies. Associate Primary Industries Minister Jo Goodhew told the meeting a number of ministers with economic portfolios were working on the refresh, which will

extend beyond the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and that the reason more non-tariff barriers were emerging was because there were more free trade agreements. Logs, wood, and wood articles are New Zealand’s third-biggest commodity export with $3.86 billion in the year ended July 31, a 10 per cent gain from a year earlier. Wood pulp and waste paper exports were up 4.3 per cent in the year to $739 million while paper, paperboard, and articles rose 9.1 percent to $494 million.

Auditing stock crucial Michael Lee, an agribusiness audit specialist at Crowe Horwath advises how the introduction of simple systems can mitigate potential theft. The Federated Farmers’ dairy industry chairperson, Andrew Hoggard points out if a bank was robbed there would be uproar, but police don’t tend to see stock as cold, hard cash. Mr Lee agrees saying, “Stock theft is extremely important for farmers as not only do they lose their capital when stock is stolen, which for a dairy cow can be up to $2,000, they also suffer the loss of revenue from that stock. “With the introduction of electronic identification tags individual stock can be scanned and identified.” He says this is one way to mitigate stock losses. “EID can be used to reconcile back to the farm’s records. Keeping track of the records regularly also means high death rates are identified in a timely manner. On top of that he suggests farmers scan their animals four times a year. “Incorporating a basic schedule of scanning allows for reconciliation of numbers to ensure there are no irregularities in stock numbers.” Mr Lee suggests a possible stock reconciliation schedule for farmers

could look like the following: March — to establish the opening number for the season, May — prior to winter grazing, August — upon returning from winter grazing and prior to calving and October/ November — post calving. “Integrating simple and achievable measures in the farming calendar could potentially alert farmers to a discrepancy in stock level. While protecting farmers from stolen stock is one of the factors this mitigates, it also allows farmers to be reactive to other problems on their farm such as death rates in calving.”
