Students from Stratford High School complete a livestock module

The club will provide a social outlet for young people from Patea to Pihama and across to Kaponga. South Taranaki Young Farmers chairwoman Amelia Nichol said she was ‘stoked with the turnout’. “People have been signing up all night and we now have about 30 members.” One of these, Caprice Bouzaid, works as a parts specialist at a Hawera motorcycle retailer. “I’m really looking forward to the networking opportunities being a member will give me,” she said. The official launch party attracted members from the region’s Central, Coastal and Inglewood clubs. “For the first time in a long time, all of Taranaki’s NZ Young Farmers clubs are booming,” said Taranaki district chairman Matthew Herbert. “We are out there getting involved in our communities which is being noticed.”

“I think the rest of the country could learn from how you support each other and the TeenAg clubs,” added Mr Copeland. Earlier in the day Mr Copeland attended the first inter-club challenge between Taranaki’s TeenAg clubs. Inglewood High School won the senior event, while New Plymouth Girls’ High School were named best juniors. Stratford High School took out the award for best club. Close to 60 students competed in modules ranging from fencing, through to cooking and motorbike health and safety. “The aim of each of the 11 modules was to promote all of the different career opportunities in primary industries,” said NZYF field officer Megan Bates. The inter-club challenge is set to become an annual event.

Corka Kale is an exciting new intermediate kale to Speciality Seeds.

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights.

• Highly palatable intermediate kale • High leaf to stem ratio

Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials.

• Quality autumn and winter feed

Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon.

• Recommended sowing rate: 5ks/ha

All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

Dairy apprenticeship scheme launched A new dairy apprenticeship scheme, showcased throughout the country this month, aims to rapidly grow capability in the dairy industry. Federated Farmers and Primary ITO have teamed up to develop The Federated Farmers Apprenticeship Dairy with both organisations playing key roles. The scheme will be launched as a pilot in selected regions with a target of close to 200 apprentices on-farm across New Zealand over the coming months. “We are delighted to be working alongside Primary ITO, the training organisation for the primary industries, to support our Federated Farmers employers to gain motivated and capable staff for their farms,” said Federated Farmers dairy group chair, Chris Lewis. Federated Farmers will identify dairy farm employers and ensure they are equipped to offer a quality work environment, while actively supporting the on-job training and development of their apprentice. “We are supporting our employers with the development of a Farm Charter, which reinforces the goals of the Sustainable Dairying: Workplace Action Plan, and resources that underpin the best on-job training, career development and support for their apprentice. The professional development of the employer is also an important aspect of the Farm Charter — they will learn and grow throughout the apprenticeship too,” said Mr Lewis. Primary ITO will

recruit the apprentices and arrange the formal training towards the NZQA-recognised qualifications. They will also support the apprenticeship through regular farm visits to ensure everything is on-track, providing extra assistance as needed. “Through the apprenticeship we want to recruit bright and motivated New Zealanders onto our dairy farms and show everyone what a great career choice dairy farming is. Our apprentices will have the opportunity to work and learn in an exciting and innovative environment, with an increasing focus on technology, as well as to be a part of their local farming community,” said Primary ITO chief executive Dr Linda Sissons. Dr Sissons said career development is also a focus Dr Linda Sissons, Primary ITO chief executive of the apprenticeship. TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

SUSTAINABLE FARMING by Denise Gunn

Winners of the national ambassador title for the Ballance Farm Environmental Awards, Peter and Nicola Carver, won’t be resting on their laurels as they have further plans for their 515ha family property.

T

he Ohangai dairy and drystock farmers, operating as Holmleigh Trust Partnership with Peter’s parents Gerald and Faye, make good use of their farm’s varied contour of flat to steep hill country. A 95ha dairy platform, developed to start milking in the 2014/15 season, has added to the sheep and beef breeding and finishing unit. Peter said the land lends itself to dairying.

“The part of the farm that we have converted is relatively flat, has no waterways and the cowshed is very central. “By converting part of the farm, it means that we have spread the risk of commodity fluctuations and are endeavouring to maximise returns from this class of land.” “It has also created efficiencies between the range of classes of stock,” he said.

farm and shares his passion for horses with his three granddaughters. Nicola said they spend much of their leisure time riding. “Our children have a keen interest in farming and it is hoped that Holmleigh will be kept for the next generation.” Around 4,500 units of dry stock are wintered on the farm with a 50:50 sheep to beef ratio. Romney ewes are run in two mobs. Lambs are weaned early so ewes retain condition before going onto a summer pasture rotation and into tupping. The lambs are sold when reaching an 18.5kg average finishing weight. Angus bulls are used over 50 Angus breeding cows, as well as young and late cycling dairy cows. All progeny are finished and some bulls are sold for dairy service. The summer-safe country has an annual average rainfall of 1,800mm –2,000mm. “It can be wet at times, but the soil is quite free draining,” said Peter. “Normally we have minimal health issues related to the climate.” With a Diploma in Farm Management from Lincoln University, Peter tracks his environmental and soil awareness back to his studies. The couple believe in no tillage and use a cross slot drill for most of their cropping. “The one pass system is very efficient and we see it as very important to keep the soil structure intact,” said Peter. Soil tests are conducted before crops go in and nutrients applied at planting. Soil protection and erosion prevention is a major consideration in grazing management. Peter and Nicola are proud of the farm’s progress. “The farm has been re-grassed extensively, there is new water reticulation to most paddocks, access tracks and laneways have been created, fences have been improved and some areas of the farm that have

been vulnerable to erosion and weed infestation have been retired and planted,” said Peter. These features didn’t go unnoticed as the awards judges described Holmleigh as a tidy, functional farm. The judges said this highlighted excellent thinking and execution of environmental planning throughout the farm for the long-term sustainability of the land. They also mentioned that it was an impressive system giving huge flexibility while helping to ensure a sustainable business. The Carvers work closely with the Taranaki Regional Council Stress Scheme to progressively retire and plant erosion-prone land. They’ve planted 5ha of redwoods and 25ha of pines in woodlots and continue to fence further areas for riparian planting on dry stock areas, as well creating more shelter belts and trees for shade.

SAFETY FIRST

Peter described winning the national ambassador title as a huge shock and honour. He said the opportunity to feedback and test their business against others was something he held in high regard. “It has been a great opportunity for us to learn more about our business and the way forward,” added Nicola. “This has been a great step in what is turning into an incredible learning journey.”

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Denise Gunn Colene McBride was born into a farming family and inherited a love for cows and dairying.

H

er grandparents, Frank and Anne, founded Puketawa Stud in Mangatoki, breeding and showing pedigree Jersey cows. When Frank passed away in 1969, Colene’s father Jim and his brothers ran the family farm in Duthie Road until it was sold. “My parents, Jim and Carolyn, have carried the Puketawa Stud on and have had a number of bulls marketed through CRV and LIC,” said Colene.

“When I was born, my parents were leasing a farm in Alton and in 1991 they bought the farm in Okato where they still are today.” Colene has always had an affinity for animals and from the moment she could walk, would be in the calf pens. “I always wanted to work on the farm, but it had to be our farm; never wanted to work for anyone else. I wanted to be with my cows who I knew inside out and

back to front.” In her late teens, Colene enjoyed a four-year stint working in hospitality but still milked whenever she could. In 2005 she returned home to work for her parents when they took on a lease farm next to the family farm in Okato. The 61ha farm (54ha effective)

is located five minutes drive south of Okato, roughly halfway between Mount Taranaki and the coast. Colene now runs her own stud, under the name McAnlen, on the lease farm. “I do all the herd management side of things and the farm work is shared

between the two farms. Colene and her parents run the two farms side-by-side. The McBride family bought the initial 135-cow herd from Stratford in 2005. Buying the odd cow from dispersal sales and conference sales, and holding onto excess heifer calves over the past few years, has steadily increased the herd number to 165. “The herd was mainly a LIC herd when purchased and for the first few years I kept up with that and chased BW [Breeding Worth], but it did me no good,” said Colene. “I was left with frail and narrow Friesians, especially in the back end. You almost needed a crowbar to wedge their legs apart to put the cups on,” said Colene. “The herd was also losing fertility, and the amount of CIDRS I was having to use was a joke.” Colene began to look at other breeds to bring some size back into the herd and came across the Normande breed. “I cannot fault the breed. They have brought size and fertility to the herd and they are probably the most docile animals I have ever come across.” Colene started out with 10 straws of semen used in 2008 which gave her three heifer calves. All of these cows are still in the herd and regularly at the top of the production ladder at the end of the season. “I currently milk Ayrshires, Friesians, Normandes, Swedish Reds, and have started using the odd bit of Milking Shorthorn also. “For this coming season, the bulls have been sourced from Semex, CRV, World Wide Sires, Genetic Enterprises, and the Ayrshire Breeders Corporate (ABC).

The herd is kept as one spring calving herd until they calve. The cows are then joined with the Puketawa herd and milked through the family farm shed. Colene said this is until there are enough cows calved to warrant starting her own shed up. All calves are reared together on the Puketawa farm. The three-year average for her farm’s production is 55,655kgMS with a farm record achieved last season of 57,042kgMS. Dairy farming has its challenges and during the 2015/16 season, Colene’s herd was hit hard with facial eczema. “My farm sits in a warm air current so while I was getting hit hard by eczema, the family farm over the boundary barely got any. Close to 25 per cent of Colene’s herd had to be dried off early and she lost a

few good cows too. “Nothing is worse than seeing your cows suffer, and I will admit it brought me to tears after losing a favourite to it.” Colene said even though they had sprayed the pasture, it just wasn’t enough to keep the massive spore counts at bay. “The flow-on effect hit this season with a higher empty rate.” Despite the challenges, Colene thoroughly enjoys working in the dairy industry, particularly working outside. She holds a strong interest in genetics and building a better cow. “That’s probably my favourite thing to discuss with other farmers,” said Colene.

Six inaugural Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships were awarded this year with each recipient receiving $5,000 to further their careers in the sector. As part of the process, applicants were asked to identify what they see as the biggest challenge or opportunity in the food industry, and what they would do about it. Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton said the talent emerging from the scholarship applications indicates a bright future for the broader red meat sector. “We were overwhelmed at receiving 79 applications. The standard and passion from the applicants exceeded all expectations when we launched the Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships. Our panel certainly had a challenging job making their selections and we extend our thanks to all of the young people that took the time to apply and to the co-operative shareholders who

supported their applications.” Jake said he applied for the scholarship because Silver Fern Farms is an industry leading company with a great brand and a great involvement in the New Zealand agriculture industry. “I really enjoy the meat industry and growing great food. Also I knew I have something really positive to offer Silver Fern Farms and I would make a difference for them.” The six scholars travelled to Dunedin for the Silver Fern Farms inaugural Plate to Pasture Farmers Conference. Jake has no specific plans for the money immediately. “Hopefully I will use it next year when the next lot of bills start to pile up.” He regularly travels back to Taranaki to help out on the family farm during university holidays. This year, he has picked up a summer job on a Landcorp

deer farm in Te Anau, giving him an opportunity to learn more about this industry. He has set a goal to pass this semester with an A average. Jake would also like to be elected president of the Lincoln Young Farmers Club. Although not entirely sure what area to work in when he finishes his degree, Jake has two options in mind: continue studying at university to complete a Masters in Agribusiness, or apply for a graduate banking role. “Fields that interest me include business, making great food and helping others,” he said. “Long term goals are to make a difference in the agricultural industry by helping people and making a change to people’s lives. “I want to create a legacy and own my own farm.”

“On beef, we are at an interesting point. Store stock markets appear overheated given where we expect volumes and schedules to end up. Current finished cattle schedules reflect a shortage of supply, which is typical at this time of the year,” says Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton. “Once volumes pick up, and assuming the currency stays at current levels, we believe schedules will retreat to more accurately reflect end-market conditions. A number of commentators are pointing towards a recovery in beef volumes out of Australia and the United States after rebuilding periods, which we will need to be mindful of. China’s demand is increasing, but not at the near-term pace of this competing supply.” Cattle numbers in the coming season are expected to be similar or slightly up on this season, with some of the retentions out of the dairy herd last year expected to boost bull and even heifer numbers. “For lamb, China and US demand is currently strong. In October we head into the European chilled supply season which should hold up farm gate prices. Once through that, we expect the total return from lamb to decrease given the greater frozen mix. We would normally see a $1.00/kg rule of thumb difference in value from the Christmas chilled period to the main part of the season — everything else being equal,” says Mr Hamilton. “We expect lamb numbers to be up this coming season. All the feedback we are receiving is that the North Island in particular has seen good lambing. Volumes may well be up 5–10 per cent and back through 20 million lambs nationally processed next season. “Venison markets remain very strong given the lower supply out of New Zealand. Market prices in Europe and the US remain up on last year, and new premium trim markets in the US are adding to the overall value being realised. We see a continuation of these current market conditions. “We expect venison numbers processed to be similar to the current season at around 280,000–300,000 as the national herd continues to slowly rebuild.”

New Zealand’s agricultural contractors are hard at work this spring taking care of those big jobs on the farm which have often become too large or too specialised for individual farmers to handle alone. In years past the average Kiwi farmer relied on four-legged horsepower and a suite of simple machines and hand tools to run every aspect of the operation. But as technology has increased and science has made farming more intensive, contractors have stepped in to fulfill many specialist roles in the seasonal cultivation of the land. This is never more apparent than in the spring, when big machinery is often seen working its way across the land. The cost inherent in the complex, custom-built machinery used for such tasks is now beyond the reach of many farmers. Their answer is calling in specialists. They come with the advantage of indepth knowledge and lowered overheads for farmers. It’s sound economic sense

to hire in a contractor with a huge silage wagon coupled to a 200-horsepowerplus tractor, rather than purchasing the same machinery and having it lie idle in the barn over the winter. Good contractors know their area of expertise well, and are trusted by their clients to take care of the big jobs, leaving farmers free to attend to other aspects of their business. Dams, effluent ponds, roads, races, pads and even the sites for new sheds and homes are all prepared by specialists. Many contractors have their own limerock quarries for just this purpose. A key role in modern agribusiness is played by science — and at the forefront of agricultural chemistry are those

professionals who maintain the correct nutrient balance in the soil to guarantee fertile crops. Just as important as the heavy machinery which tills the fields is what goes in before the seeds are sown, and it’s standard practice for fert companies to send representatives versed in soil science around to visit their customers and draw up detailed fertiliser spreading maps. Today in Northland there is a thriving sector of the agricultural industry — one which is sure to become even more vital to the Kiwi economy as farming becomes more intensive, more scientific and more reliant on cuttingedge machinery technology.

Staying safe on the job With the start of Daylight Saving WorkSafe New Zealand has suggested now is the time to check your sleep schedule to ensure you’re getting the right amount of sleep to keep both yourself and others safe. Agricultural contracting relies heavily on the weather and so does the farmer who more often than not, will need to prepare the ground beforehand. When a fine spell hits the pressure is on for both to complete the task at hand. Often the farmers are out later due to the extra hours of daylight to prepare paddocks before crop or to get the last of the silage completed before the rain shows itself. The contractors are wary of the list of farms they need to service within a tight timeframe. As a result the pressure can easily amount to stress and working big days leading to tiredness. With large machinery involved it isn’t a great combination. “People who are tired and fatigued are 30% more likely to have an accident. Both businesses and workers have a responsibility to manage fatigue and the risks that arise from it,” says WorkSafe chief executive Nicole Rosie. “Work and personal demands can often make it difficult to get the sleep we need to function safely throughout the day,” Ms Rosie said. WorkSafe has a fatigue quick guide with information for businesses and workers to explain their respective

responsibilities to manage fatigue. Fatigue is a work-related health risk if it reduces our ability and alertness to work safely and effectively. It can affect people’s feeling of wellness and wellbeing and impact productivity. It can also lead to safety incidents. This may lead to errors and an increase in workplace health and safety incidents, with potentially serious consequences for both workers and businesses. “According to our 2015 Health and Safety Attitudes and Behaviour Survey,

43% of workers in sectors with a high risk of injuries and fatalities reported working when overtired,” Ms Rosie said. WorkSafe is currently working with other regulators including the New Zealand Transport Agency, Civil Aviation Authority and Maritime New Zealand to look at ways to better support workers and business to manage fatigue in the workplace. The aim is to develop key cross-industry information for businesses, workers and their families about how to recognise and manage fatigue in the workplace.

Agricultural organisations and contractors have joined forces to promote bee safety as spring gets underway. Aerial and ground sprayers can protect bees from unintended exposure to agrichemicals just by following some simple rules. Responsible use of products is the initiative behind the ‘bee responsible campaign’ by Agcarm, New Zealand Aviation in Agriculture, and Rural Contractors New Zealand. “Bees are extremely good pollinators of crops, so contribute substantially to New Zealand’s multi-billion dollar agricultural economy,” says Agcarm chief executive Mark Ross. He says that agrichemicals are vital for ensuring the security of our food supply and, when used responsibly, “pose no threat to our bee population.” But “we must remain vigilant and address any potential risks to our bees.” The campaign was launched in September to coincide with Bee Aware Month as well as the peak sale of agrichemicals. “Although the message is always relevant,” says Mr Ross. “It’s important for manufacturers’ of agrichemicals to have clear label statements regarding safety precautions for their products, including describing how to protect our

pollinators — like our members do.” Rural Contractors New Zealand chief executive Roger Parton emphasizes the importance of adequate training for people applying agrichemicals. “Correct application is as important as using the correct agrichemical,” says Mr Parton. HUNTING, FISHING & OUTDOORS Rethink needed on waterway fencing

Avoid Drink Driving BE THE SOBER D FOR A NIGHT

New research on keeping stock out of rivers and streams requires an urgent and radical rethink of the current national riparian fencing strategy, according to Fish and Game. At the moment, streams wider than a metre and deeper than 30cm must be fenced to keep stock out, but this rule doesn’t apply to smaller waterways. Research just published in the international ‘Journal of Environmental Quality’ questions the current approach. Principal scientist for AgResearchInvermay’s Environment Group, Lincoln University professor, Dr Richard McDowell, has found the smaller, exempt streams actually account for 77% of the contamination load in a catchment. “This is an extremely important piece of research. We now have the science to show what we have long suspected, that small waterways are crucially important to the environment and need to be properly protected from contamination,” said Fish and Game chief executive Bryce Johnson. Bryce said the research also calls into question the dairy industry’s claim that it is fencing 90% of the country’s waterways. “Thanks to Dr McDowell’s research, this figure no longer stands

Pay attention!

close scrutiny. The dairy industry is only talking about 90% of larger waterways which have to be fenced anyway, not the critically important smaller ones where most of the pollution is occurring. “These smaller streams are vital to the environment. They flow into the bigger streams and rivers and Dr McDowell’s research shows that by the time they join up with bigger streams, much of the pollution has already occurred,” said Bryce. “New Zealand’s wealth relies heavily on clean fresh water. “The country’s two biggest income earners, tourism and agriculture, cannot survive without it. “This latest research shows that urgent action is required to protect New Zealand’s internationally unique point of difference and fencing all streams will play a significant role in preserving that heritage.” Dr Richard McDowell’s research paper can be found at dl.sciencesocieties.org/ publications/jeq/articles/46/5/1038

Improving joints

(Part 2) A recent client had been affected by osteoarthritis in his hips and shoulders. We created a personalised joint health programme that included supplements that can help promote healing in arthritic joints. After speaking with him today he said that he is mostly symptom free. The real hero however is not so much the dietary changes and supplements but his body’s own healing processes. All disease starts with changes to cell functions. If this is left unchecked it can lead to tissue damage and eventually to disease. Our bodies have incredible healing properties that can become overwhelmed by a disease process. While physical damage to joints can cause arthritis it is important to see it as a real disease and not just wear and tear. Joint cartilage appears as tough lifeless tissue. A closer look reveals something quite different. Cartilage matrix is secreted by specialised living cells called chondrocytes. These cells maintain small pieces of cartilage. Anything that negatively affects chondrocytes will eventually damage cartilage. Lose enough cartilage and you have osteoarthritis. Chondrocytes can become damaged

by several processes. Firstly free radicals can damage them to the point that they cannot function properly. If left unprotected by antioxidants the chondrocytes will die and the piece of cartilage it maintained will eventually be lost. Secondly, corrosive enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) attack the collagen matrix of cartilage, and thirdly unwanted inflammation can damage chondrocytes. What we need to do is to protect chondrocytes, reduce inflammation, reduce free radical activity and reduce MMP activity. What this does is to allow our natural cartilage healing processes to spring to life. The result is less pain and improved mobility. The answer is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dense diet. We then add anti-inflammatory supplements that can help restore joint healing processes. Please contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. The art of farm conversation Dairy Women’s Network is running a series of free learning modules aimed at helping those in the dairy industry coach and empower the people they interact with on a daily basis. Starting in November, the ‘Coaching Conversations’ course will be held in towns throughout New Zealand until early 2018, as DWN identified people management as one of the biggest farm challenges facing its members, in a recent survey. “Coaching is not the same as people management, but are skills that can be used in everyday conversations with your team, partner, kids and rural professional team,” says course developer Lynda Clark. “Workplaces have changed drastically over the past decade or so as a result of a greater emphasis on leadership, teamwork and empowering staff. “Coaching Conversations is about moving away from a problem-solving mind set to a coaching one,” said Lynda. Having a ‘coach approach’ prepares people to make the most of their skills and use them to take action. “Sometimes it’s very easy to get caught

in the mindset of ‘I need to have input into everything’ and people like this often think that nothing will get done unless they have input. “Instead, if you were to give your team the confidence to tackle a problem or situation on their own, support them to find their own solutions, and work with them to build greater self-responsibility, you’ll develop individuals who feel empowered, valued for their contribution and able to do the task in your absence.” She says in doing this, employers will build a team of people who feel invested in the work they’re doing and like they’re making a positive difference. The course is free and open to anyone working in the dairy industry. Lynda says attendees can expect to walk away with strategies to implement straight away. To find a Coaching Conversations module and other events near you, visit dwn.org.nz/events and register to attend online.

Getting the top quality burgers by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Well, they have done it with milk, soy milk, now the Frankenstein meat boys are producing burger patties in a lab! I haven’t had a burger since 1997 and that was in Hollister, California. I guessed that there was a meat patty in there somewhere, but it sure as hell had no flavour, and if it did, that flavour was drowned out by the sauce. So, meat-wise there’s no competition; when the cook deals up a homemade burger, made with a 50mm thick pure meat patty, grown on the farm, a few slices of tomato and beetroot, crunchy lettuce and topped off with a couple of dollops of homemade sauce - nothing can compete against that, That’s what the real world wants, that’s what the people want. The artificial world is becoming more and more artificial everyday, which from my perspective, opens up the opportunity for New Zealand to become the number

one, top quality, food producer in the world and this will cover all markets; wine, kiwifruit, stone fruit, avocados, apples, plums etc together with all grass fed milk and all grass fed meat products and heaps of vegetables. We are isolated; we have strong agriculture and horticultural industries. We already have many tourists coming to experience our top quality foods. Our top chefs are leading the way in finedining with New Zealand produce. We could easily rank that up to ‘the best food on the planet’. However, to get into the top quality food market, we must first and foremost take out the synthetic, soluble, artificial fertilisers that are impacting on the soil and soil life. At the same time we must stop all use of toxic sprays and drenches.

These poisonous products are going directly into our food chain. So it’s time for producers to realign to what is happening and begin setting up a multi-mineral system with help from the micro-organisms to install a full array of minerals to help the plants fix their own immunity to pest and disease. Once the plants have immunity they pass that immunity on to animals and humans. This multi-mineral system has been around since plants first appeared 460 million years ago and that same system is here today to help install immunity. It’s no big deal, we are only going back to where we came from and when you look at that ‘chemical period’ of say 100 years of spraying plants and then you look at huge natural forests on the planet that have survived and thrived for thousands of years just by having the

mineral content to build immunity, there is no comparison. Whoever/whatever put our planet together also put together all the checks and balances to ensure survival of plants, animals and humans. In reality our planet is looking after all life on Earth. Sure it is in flux all the time, with earthquakes, volcanoes, torrid weather etc, but all in all Mother Nature looks after us well. It’s time for us to return the favour and start making choices that have a positive impact for the planet, our grandkids and great, great grandkids. TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Is this a confession? At last there is a change on the horizon. One of our major fertiliser companies has stepped up to the plate to offer a helping hand to save our rivers and streams from future pollution. Of course this would be like putting the handbrake on a fully laden logging truck on a downward slope. With the unquestionable evidence that these NPK fertiliser companies are largely to blame for this mess, they are running out of road. To keep their foot on the accelerator is not a viable alternative. I applaud the CEO for joining the team. Although there is an utterance from this committed team to stop the pollution, the answers of how to do it will need to be found. The current science is failing the environmental futures test and the two large NPK fertiliser companies who are applying this outdated science are failing the majority of the farmers of New Zealand. Although farmers are the focus of the attacks from environmentalists on water pollution, the fault lies with the two large NPK fertiliser companies who provide a specialist service and sell the fertiliser to 95% of our farmers who are following their advice.

Because soil fertility is so specialised these companies have been getting away with focussing on sales rather than honest advice and honest science. Evidence of this is the propaganda which has led to the acceptance that superphosphate and urea grow grass. This is so entrenched in farmers’ minds that a lot of fertiliser applied is carried on the back of superphosphate. If you need K and S a likely brew could be potassic sulphur super. If you needed Mg a likely product would be surpentine super or if your budget is tight Super 10 would do the job. A modern change lately is the use of DAP which is a brilliant product to deliver soluble phosphate which is particularly efficient for cropping. Research has proven that it will not lift phosphate reserves in the soil unless applied in heavy applications. Where soil phosphate levels are already adequate, (30+ Olsen P), to use super phosphate as a carrier is wasting farmers’ money and only helping fertiliser companies increase their sales and profits, and the excess is polluting our rivers and streams. A soil nutrient which is being used up with every tanker

load of milk leaving the farm is calcium. Research has shown that an average dairy farm would need 300kg of lime per hectare per year to keep up with what is leaving the farm as milk. Lime would therefore be a much more cost effective carrier for elements which are essential like potassium, magnesium, sulphur and trace elements. Another fallacy is the acceptance that pH should be 5.8 to 6.0. A scientific table showing the availability of nutrients at differing pH levels illustrate that phosphate is twice as available at pH 6.3 compared to the availability of phosphate at 5.8pH. This is real scientific evidence that farmers have been taken for a ride. So to increase your current phosphate levels just move your pH from 5.8 to 6.3. Your soil phosphates will actually increase without applying any phosphate. There are two points to this picture I have painted. 1. Superphosphate, DAP and urea are all water soluble. If these products are applied in excess where do you think they will end up? 2. To stop the cause of the pollution, not only will these water soluble products need to be stopped but the NPK trained specialists will need reprogramming. To change the direction of such an entrenched system won’t be easy for these chemical NPK companies or the farmers who follow them. For real science with integrity which will save money and grow more grass, ring me. David Law, Forward Farming, 027 490 9896.

POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys? Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of gravity driven pumps Everyone wants something for nothing and pumps working from their own water supply are often a great way of getting water delivered to higher levels. The concept has been around since invention in late 1700s. Often referred to as ram pumps from their predecessors, Glockemann 320 Pumps are in fact gravity driven pumps. Without getting too technical, water rams are powered by the water hammer effect of the ports opening and closing whereas Glockemann 320 are operated by high volume/ low pressure water on a large diaphragm working a smaller piston and cylinder to give the lift pressure required. At end of stroke a valve opens and components return ready for next cycle. Water for the pressure side can come from either submersion of the inlet port, suction hose off the inlet port or dry mounting the pump where the water is tapped from the drive tube. This is common in Australia and other places where remoteness of installation and flash flooding are a risk. Another difference between ram pumps and gravity driven pumps is that ram pumps need more velocity/ high drop as this is best for producing the water hammer to power them. Gravity driven need much less velocity and drop, usually between 0.6m and 1.8m, giving lift to 150m–200m vertical, although the spec charts do show delivery to 20m from 0.3m drop. This large power to lift ratio is not usually available from a ram pump. Glockemann 320 pumps are a robust cast iron construction and have proven

to give years of reliable service before overhaul, which is an inexpensive and simple task if you are a do-ityourself person. Irri-Max Ltd of Waipukurau is the sole accredited New Zealand distributor. For more information call them 0800 426 296.

Since our return to the Taranaki region five years ago we have mainly focused on rural infrastructure development, in particular the construction of concrete bridges up to 24m clear span with a Class 1 rating and effluent storage. Our aim is to make the project as easy as possible for the client. We source competitive quotes for all large components and will go to great lengths in the design process to find the most cost effective methodology. Our projects run smoothly and on budget. Any variations are discussed and agreed to before work begins, this way there are no hidden surprises. Double Tee concrete bridges are hard to beat for durability and function. On completion you can expect a well-sited bridge with steel guardrails and all earthworks on and off the bridge completed. Effluent storage is a subject that is not going away. There are a multitude of solutions on the market and we have been involved in pretty much all of them. In the end it’s all about value for money. We have seen enough soil test reports to know clay lined ponds are a thing of the past. Ponds ultimately need to be lined. Concrete and steel are too rich when

a lined pond or a bladder system does the same job for a fraction of the price. We have an alliance with Flexi Tanks NZ and they certainly have their place in the Taranaki market. Flexi Tanks are cost effective and a great product, but

nothing can beat the price of a lined pond in the right conditions. It is best we come to look at either your bridge or pond site to give you the benefit of free advice. See our advert for contact details.

LIVESTOCK

Update on Mycoplasma bovis

WASHER

& co

The Ministry for Primary Industries’ testing programme has identified one new property as positive for the bacterial cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis. The newly identified property is a Van Leeuwen Dairy Group farm which was already under a Restricted Place notice under the Biosecurity Act. “We’ve said all along that we fully expected the possibility for further farms within this enterprise testing positive. The nature of this disease is that it spreads between animals that are in close, repeated and prolonged contact”, says incident controller Stephen Bell. “The disease doesn’t always present symptoms and often doesn’t show up through just one test. This is why we developed a testing protocol which tests herds up to three times at three to four week intervals. “Testing like this, over two to three months gives us the confidence we need that we have definite results for each farm. This latest detection is evidence of that protocol working. “It has meant there has been a long period of disruption and uncertainty for farms that are being tested but we have to be absolutely thorough in diagnosing positive and negative farms. It’s important for New Zealand that we take that time to get accurate results,” he said. The testing programme for Mycoplasma bovis continues at pace with over 26,000 of the planned 39,000 tests now completed by MPI’s Animal Health Laboratory. “There has also been a nationwide testing programme. Samples of mastitic milk have been collected from regional labs across the country for testing. To date approximately 2,300 samples have been received, these tests have also not identified any other infected farms elsewhere in New Zealand.

“Taken together, these results are encouraging and suggest that our surveillance plan is working and this disease is not spreading in the local area around the infected farms and is not widespread across the country”. Mr Bell says that while the sampling and testing programme continues MPI is also preparing for what might happen next. “This involves preparing plans for the different possible scenarios. “Eradication is one of the scenarios we are looking at, but before we can make decisions we need to have

Introducing a World First in Electric Fencing Full range of electric fencing products including mains/battery and solar powered energisers

enough evidence to be confident that the disease has not spread elsewhere”, he says. “We cannot make long-term decisions that potentially have huge impacts on people’s lives without that knowledge. We need to be confident the disease is limited to the outbreak on the farms where we have detected it.”

RURAL WHEELS

Rally bred resilience by Andy Bryenton

With warmer weather here many people will be thinking about summer adventures off the beaten track. For those with a love of excitement and power, motocross and off-road bikes exert a magnetic pull this time of year, while for others it’s the promise of dry, winding tarmac that gets the blood pumping. Then again, with initiatives afoot nationwide to get people out there on two wheels, perhaps it’s just ease of parking or fuel economy which appeal. While there are plenty of motorcycles which push the envelope in each of these directions — road-going power, off-road agility and frugal commuter practicality — there’s one which brings them all together into a happy medium. And it does so by approaching from a totally different direction. Honda’s new CRF250L actually has the profile of a

working agricultural bike under its sharp panel work — or at least a distillation of all the lessons learned by Honda over decades of building machines that can fulfill multiple roles on the farm. Make no mistake, this is no rural workhorse though. The long suspension travel and high ground clearance, narrow profile for agility and willing 250cc fuel injected

QUAD BIKE SAFETY Concentrate on the riding. Look where you’re going, not where the stock are going.

PADDOCK ROLLER

3 meter rubber tyre roller heavy duty with a galvanised frame and a zinc arc galvanised drum, can be filled with 550 LTS of oil or water. Removable drawbar for extra length to add harrows between roller and tractor, wind up jack stand. Previsions for scraper attachment.

Honda’s CRF250L takes it from the streets to the trail effortlessly

single cylinder engine of the CRF250L and its sister bike the CRF350L Rally may be informed by the all-round reliability of Honda’s farming range, but there’s plenty of spice thrown in from the trophy-winning CRF off-road and enduro lineage as well. The Rally version of the CRF250L goes one better, drawing inspiration from some of Honda’s legendary endurance bikes of old. In the days when the Paris to Dakar rally cut clean through the wilds of Africa, big, high-riding motorcycles duked it out with the 4x4s and trucks of this gruelling race. From such sport bikes like Honda’s NX650 Dominator were born, and now the styling cues of bikes like this — and later adventure models — come together in the

Rally spec of the new CRF. With twin headlights, a wind deflector and updated panel work, the Rally looks ready to go anywhere. Which is no illusion. Both iterations of the CRF250 are made to be learner-accessible, ready for the trail and the highway with just the addition of number plates. It’s a great bike for those who live within equal reach of town and country — an inexpensive commuter that can park in spaces too small even for many road bikes, plus a fun trail riding machine on the weekends. Have Honda hit the nail on the head? New riders seem convinced, with the fuel injected 250s meeting a great reception over the ditch. And if anything, New Zealand has even more of the kind of terrain the CRF250L was made to tame.

MOVABLE SHED

Have you ever just wanted a shed that you can move from paddock to paddock or even move to different farms? The perfect size for calfs and strong enough to stand up to the Taranaki weather. Here at Podjursky Motors we have come up with a solution to that we have made a shed that you can do just that with. Biodiversity group means business

27

Wild for Taranaki, the region’s biodiversity umbrella group has entered a new era with the appointment of an operations manager to guide the roll-out of its first major initiative. Taranaki-born Kirstin Foley, who has a strong business background is settling into the new role and preparing for the launch of Restore Taranaki — an ambitious multi-pronged programme building on its members’ work to ensure the region’s native plants and wildlife can thrive. Kirstin says she’s excited to be taking on the challenge. “Taranaki’s unique biodiversity and culture have always been special to me, and I’m looking forward to working with our members and the community to restore the region’s plants and wildlife.” Wild for Taranaki Trust chairman, Mike Weren has welcomed Kirsten’s appointment, calling it a milestone for the organisation. “We see the Restore Taranaki initiative

as vital, and Kirsten has the experience and expertise to tie it all together,” he said. Kirstin has a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Political Science, Bachelor of Commerce and Administration, majoring in Accounting and Commercial Law, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting. She began her career with Landrigan Waite (now BDO New Zealand) in Taranaki. She has also worked for KPMG in Hamilton, spent time working in various financial and management roles overseas and prior to this appointment was part of the team at Staples Rodway in New Plymouth. Wild for Taranaki is an alliance of more than 40 agencies and organisations involved in biodiversity protection and
