“While some Kiwis are enjoying homegrown vegetables, many are going without altogether,” says Yates spokesperson Fiona Arthur. “This National Gardening Week, people are being encouraged to grow-an-extrarow to share with neighbours, community pantries, food banks and other local food donation agencies. “Popping a few extra seeds in the dirt does not require much effort but could mean so much for another family in need. “To help get your extra row underway, Yates is lending a helping hand. When you register online at yates.co.nz/nationalgardening-week between October 1 and 25, you will receive a free packet of vegetable seeds.” Anyone can grow a garden, no matter how large or small the space. “Encourage family members to give growing some veggies a go,” says Integrity Community Media’s garden columnist Liz Clark. “Sharing extra produce from the garden with others is rewarding and reduces food waste. Have a look in the shed for some of those unused pots from the nursery, fill them up with some container and vegetable mix and sow a seed or two.

“Green vegetables such as lettuce, mini cauliflower, spinach and eggplants will grow quite happily provided they have enough space. Water regularly and feed with a liquid fertiliser for thriving plants. “It is also a great way to get the children involved and take pride in sharing what they have grown with others.” Once you have grown your veggies to share, please visit the Yates website to find a list of the organisations in your area that would welcome your donation of fresh homegrown produce. “National Gardening Week aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and closer connections with nature,” Ms Arthur said. “Whether it is a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening. Integrity Community Media has a Yates gardening hamper to give away valued at $300. The pack includes a variety of veggie seeds, both new and some old favourites and other gardening products. To be in to win, tell us who you will be sharing your produce with and why at comp@integrity.nz.

New Zealand’s dairy sector is continuing to play its part in tackling climate change, according to DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. The recent International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report summarises the latest climate change science from around the world. It endorses New Zealand’s split gas approach, recognising the difference between biogenic methane and long-lived gases, and that biogenic methane does not need to be reduced to net zero. Dr Mackle said New Zealand is worldleading by legislating a split gas target in the Zero Carbon Act. “This recognises methane is a shortlived gas and requires a different target to the long-lived carbon dioxide. “Farmers are making changes to measure, manage and reduce emissions, including changes to farm practice, as well as adopting new technologies and solutions as they become available.” Along with other partners, DairyNZ is investing millions in researching options such as methanogen vaccine and inhibitors, selection breeding of low methane animals, low methane forages, genetics research, reducing nitrous oxide and leaching, and technology uptake. “Our sector is doing a huge amount of work to support farmers with practice changes too,” said Dr Mackle

“New Zealand’s agricultural emissions have stabilised, and improving farming practices see us 25% more emissions efficient at producing dairy compared to 1990. “This has been achieved through the hard work, commitment and investment by our farmers. We want to preserve New Zealand dairy farmers’ position as the most sustainable in the world with our pasture-based, high-quality, safe and nutritious dairy products.” The dairy sector is in partnership with He Waka Eke Noa (HWEN). A world-first climate change partnership between the primary sector, the government and Māori, supporting farmers and growers to measure, manage and reduce emissions. HWEN will include farmers and growers being incentivised to take action through an appropriate pricing mechanism by 2025. “The dairy sector also wants to work in partnership with the government to deliver a clear long-term science strategy that will focus our joint efforts and ensure funding is directed to the right places. This must be an urgent priority. “We need access to as many tools as we can to meet this challenge. There are

currently significant barriers to getting methane reducing technology in the hands of farmers. “These include regulatory barriers and lack of research facilities, which prevent New Zealand from developing technology that is fit-for-purpose for our pasturebased systems,” Dr Mackle said.

October 2021  TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

Cute sheep a big hit by Denise Gunn The increasingly popular Valais Blacknose sheep breed first caught Rachael Grady’s eye when she came across photos on social media.

R

achael and her husband, Dave, were selling their farmlet around that time to move to their current property east of Stratford. “We were buying a very steep subdivision in a drystock region of central Taranaki, ideally suited to sheep. Primarily I was interested in a small mob to help with pasture management and grazing the paddocks, which were too steep for my horse. “I figured if I was keeping sheep, they might as well be nice to look at. The Valais is often referred to as the cutest sheep in the world, and I hoped there would be a market for excess male lambs.” Although Rachael didn’t initially have experience with sheep, she did grow up on a small lifestyle block in the United

Kingdom. Her mother bred pedigree dairy goats, which they showed and used for milk. “We had an assortment of animals, both as pets and to provide a more selfsufficient food source. I have never owned sheep. I grew up with goats and hoped I would manage. “Still, there has been a lot of new learning and the need to rely on the expertise of my farming neighbours. They have helped with lambing, shearing and health advice. “I plan to learn and take care of crutching at the least but would like to build up to a full shear.” Rachael studied to become an occupational therapist in the United Kingdom, practising full-time there and in

New Zealand for close to 27 years. She currently works at Taranaki Base Hospital. Two years ago, the couple bought two in-lamb foundation ewes from Valais Blacknose New Zealand. Rachael was drawn to the breed’s cute, toy sheep looks and their affectionate natures. “They were English Leicester ewes, in-lamb to a purebred Valais Blacknose, both carrying twins. This is a common way to get into owning the breed as purebred stock are very expensive and rare to find for sale. “Lots of people have joined breeding-up programmes, starting as we did with 50% offspring and breeding higher percentages each year towards generations, which can be registered as New Zealand purebred. “This year, we are again expecting F2 (second generation 75%) lambs. We will retain any ewe lambs for breeding the next stage of the breeding-up programme.” Rachael is a member of Valais Blacknose New Zealand Sheep Society, which is part of the NZ Sheep Breeders Association. Her part-bred ewes are registered in an appendix flock. “The North Island partner of Valais Blacknose New Zealand, in Featherston, has collected the ewes the past two seasons and puts them to a variety of rams to give us a guaranteed genetic pool. “They have used imported genetics from the United Kingdom and rams with high points, so they are quality examples of the breed standard.” Rachael said last year they had a stunning F2 (second generation) cross lamb that was a great example of the breed in both temperament and looks.

Purebred Valais Blacknose yearling wether Hugo with F1 ewes “He looks close to purebred in markings and fleece, and has a great temperament. It was a great reinforcement that the breeding-up programme is slow but works.” The couple has used some of their flock’s wool for mulching and to beef up insulation. Rachael is also booked to learn wet felting to put some of the fleeces to use as products in their home. Raising awareness of the breed within Taranaki and promoting collaboration

of Taranaki-based breeders is one of Rachael’s aims. When more purebred stock becomes widespread and available, she wants to see more breed classes at shows. As the couple move up the breedingup programme, they will retain increasing percentages of Valais blood and sell on the F1 stock until they reach F5 and New Zealand purebred status. “If finances allow, then obviously some purebred ewes would be the dream.”

Creating food sustainability BY DENISE GUNN

When Maria Lempriere and her partner Simon O’Donnell moved from Auckland to Taranaki in 2009, they found a property that ticked all the boxes. PHOTOS TRAN LAWRENCE

T

he four-hectare property, out the back of Urenui, came with an old, large villa. The couple sold the villa, along with just over one acre of land, building a pole shed and eco-home on the remainder. “We named our new plot, Peihana Farm, after the many pheasants that live in our valley,” said Maria. For the past 12 years, the couple has riparian planted, added more fruit trees, fenced and created areas for growing, and planted out a wattle and eucalypt forest stand. “We grow herbs, flowers, vegetables, fruit and nuts. I sell direct to a consumer via a spray-free grocery box service. I have an NP2 registration (commercial kitchen), which allows me to make preserves, bakes and other items for sale. It’s a good way to use up the surplus.” In addition to this, Maria holds popular skill-based workshops on-site for back yard and lifestyle block owners.

“As a food event specialist, I work with presenters who are passionate about what they do and who enjoy sharing their stories to the audience. While the presenter is teaching, I create garden-toplate food to finish the event. “I’ve drawn from Jodi Roebuck’s expertise in growing food, Carl Freeman from his Farm Next Door concept, and enjoy collaborating with other growers and producers around the region. Several years ago, Maria became a member of the Taranaki Seedsavers group and also joined the Taranaki Cropswap movement, hosting local crop swaps in Urenui. “In April 2018, I was involved in the Just Transition process, where Taranaki participated in a round of workshops to discuss where we wanted to be in 2050. “Just Transition is a partnership approach between government, unions, iwi, community groups, education and business to make sure the people,

until Covid-19 changed this. As families then contacted Maria to connect with local growers, she developed a direct to consumer business. “I am currently collaborating with 14 growers and producers from North Taranaki who help supply the grocery

Continuity of supply is crucial and only possible using other growers to fill the gaps.” For the past five years, Maria has also been involved with the Taranaki Sustainable Backyards Trail, giving tours to visitors interested in living off the land. A Massey University research team has been working alongside Maria and a number of other Taranaki small food growers. The team’s Farming to Flourish project is designed to understand the role and potential of small growers in the region. Dr Sita Venkateswar and Dr Nitha Palakshappa are the project leaders. Dr Venkateswar said their findings highlight the significant role small-scale growers

Comfrey growing in the garden

and producers are playing in developing the community from grassroots up. “Providing diverse economic opportunities and markets, and improving access to locally produced food which has high nutritional value and increased longevity because of its freshness,” she said. “Across the board, these growers reflect high environmental objectives and growing practices, and a commitment to improving the wellbeing of themselves and the people their food feeds,” said Dr Palakshappa. “With the Just Transition movement, the ripple effects of Covid-19, and other socio-economic factors, there are more

reasons than ever to prioritise food production feeding local communities ahead of export markets.” Maria has a vision for Taranaki to lead the way in the regeneration of small-scale farms producing a diverse range of food and medicine, supporting the domestic food sector and increasing the productivity level on lifestyle blocks. “We could be the sustainable food production hub of New Zealand.”

RESCUE HELICOPTER SERVICE SAVING LIVES by Denise Gunn

For the past 29 years, the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust has provided a vital life-saving service to the region.

T

he service has come a long way from its early days using available helicopters in the region for emergency callouts. Now a fullydedicated, modern helicopter with an expert team of pilots, crewmen and paramedics are available 24/7, 365 days of the year, providing a relief, rescue and recovery service. During the past four years, there has been a steady increase in the number of missions the rescue helicopter and crew have attended. Last year, the service clocked up a record number with 287 missions and 349.20 hours flight time. Inter-hospital transfers for specialist treatment are the most common call-

out. Rural and farm transfers make up for a third of the missions. Taranaki businessman Roger Malthus required the service of the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter following a boating accident in late 2020. Roger and two other fishermen were thrown overboard when their boat flipped, crossing the bar at the Pātea river mouth. His two companions reached the shoreline shortly after the incident, but Roger was left floating offshore, holding on to his scuba tank after his lifejacket failed to inflate. Roger said it was a major relief to hear the helicopter. “It would have cost me my life if it wasn’t for these guys.”

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES  October 2021

The expert team of pilots, crewmen and paramedics provide a relief, rescue and recovery service East Taranaki sheep and beef farmers Lance and Janelle Downs have also experienced the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust’s life-saving service — twice within two months. During calving season, one of the couple’s cows got into difficulty. “Lance took her through into the woolshed yards, but as I went to latch the gate, she turned around and jumped it. The gate came back and hit me just above the eye, throwing me back 4.5 metres. I was knocked unconscious for about 10 minutes and came to, covered in mud.” With no cell phone reception, Lance raced back to their house to dial 111. An ambulance and the rescue helicopter were both deployed. Janelle was flown to Taranaki Base Hospital for medical assistance. Two months later, it was Lance’s turn when an accident during calving amputated his thumb. Due to the severity of his injury, the couple were flown to Waikato Hospital for surgery. Janelle said the service offered by the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust is

worth its weight in gold. Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust chairman Evan Cottam said the service provided is 100% community-owned. “It’s only made possible by the support and generosity of individuals, families, organisations and businesses who recognise the value of having a dedicated rescue helicopter for our region.” Mr Cottam said the rescue helicopter provides rapid response in time-critical accident and medical locations. “As a charity, we receive only partial funding from the government. This is why the support from the Taranaki community is absolutely vital to what we do.” Mr Cottam said community support keeps the rescue helicopter in the sky. The Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust recently announced its A109 helicopter would be replaced by a BK117 aircraft. The A109, known locally as Bumble due to its distinctive black and yellow markings, was sent for scheduled maintenance at the beginning of 2021. However, as several additional parts required attention, the trust decided the

Pilot and base manager Mike Adair high costs involved weren’t feasible. After considering the best course of action for the community, a decision was made to lease a BK117 aircraft. The BK117 is a larger aircraft that can comfortably accommodate the patient, a family member and more equipment. “The trust is confident this will provide the safest, most appropriate and financially responsible solution for the Taranaki community,” said Mr Cottam.

He said regardless of the aircraft, patients could expect the same level of dedicated service from the crew, which is the hallmark of the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter. The public can make donations, become a Friend of the Rescue Helicopter, and sign up as a corporate sponsor through taranakirescue.org.nz/supportus/ or by calling the team on 0508 473 7283.

Get your waste away Natural picks for effluent field planting by Andy Bryenton

Spring is here, and it’s time to think about planting. Part of this regime is planting new growth over effluent system run-off fields, where water trickles back into the ecosystem and foliage fills in the final step of the chain. The problem? Soaking up water from your effluent run-off field while making the area look good with your surrounding landscape design. Robust plants with the ability to transpire large amounts of water from underground pipes back into the atmosphere would be ideal, but there’s an issue with those water-seeking roots. Get the wrong species, and your pipes could be bound up and choked by the very plants which are supposed to complete the cycle, storing away nutrients and exhaling water vapour. The solution? A selection of planting options boasting high transpiration rates but also put down only shallow roots or root masses that won’t clog up the trickle holes in your underground piping. As an added bonus, there are many species that look great as part of your garden and blend into your countryside views, all while fulfilling the vital role of taking

up water and breathing it back into the water cycle. Thankfully, there’s enough choice to be able to pick for aesthetics as well as practicality. Low-lying plants such as comprosmas spread over the soil to create cover and can be augmented with ferns such as the kiokio. More robust shrubs from the native plant roster include the kaka beak, the koromiko and some of the taller coprosma species, as well as the kawakawa. A trio of taller trees are also suitable; the well-known mānuka or ti-tree, the cabbage tree and the kānuka. It is by no means a comprehensive list, but it shows the range of New Zealand native plants that can be used for this vital task. By picking local flora, you’re helping the local ecosystem and creating a habitat for bees, birds and insects too. For the very best results, consult with your local garden centre team and your

wastewater system installer at the time of installation. Some systems perform better when partnered up with specific plants and vice versa. No matter your choice, you’ll be secure in the knowledge that

Mother Nature is taking care of the final step of the purification process and the interface between drainage technology and naturally growing roots will not become a tangled issue.

A garden festival with a difference The Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival featuring more than 50 gardens throughout the region is being presented for the 17th year running and the organisers are excited to share inspiration with the wider community. ‘We often get asked why Taranaki presents two garden festivals at the same time. The easy answer is that we have so many gardens worthy of attention, but there’s more to it than that. ‘In 2005, the Taranaki Garden Trust was formed to present real gardens created by real people. This is where we differ from the philosophy and focus of the parallel event. The gardens you will find in the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival are unashamedly honest and real, and each garden tells an impressive story of passion, energy and effort.

‘We offer a large variety of gardens that range from those that are pictureperfect to those that are practical and achievable. This spectrum of gardens is chosen by design. We want you to go away brimming with inspiration and the knowledge that you too can create your own garden of delight regardless of the time, money, or space you have to hand. ‘Just as important as the gardens are the gardeners behind them and the trust seeks to celebrate their passion and achievement. That’s why we encourage

This all combines to ensure we offer an accurate and precise boom-spraying service for crops and pastures.” Another section of the business covers biodiversity and biosecurity work, doing pest plant control for the Taranaki Regional Council. “We do a lot of pest plant control work which is a great way of utilising our services for environmental improvement. “A custom-built truck has been specially set up for industrial ground spraying and maintenance, which is the third sector of the business.” Health and safety play a vital role in business operations. Site hazard and risk identification forms, as well as emergency plans, are completed prior to each job. “We have quite a comprehensive health and safety system, which we are audited against,” said Simon. Owner/operator Simon Patterson has clocked up years of experience, initially following his father’s footsteps into the industry. An agricultural engineering degree, and Post Graduate Diploma in Business and Administration, paved the way for Simon to lay a firm foundation when establishing Agman Spraying Taranaki. As a Growsafe registered chemical applicator, Simon is qualified to apply agrichemicals from a motorised sprayer. “It takes a lot to know chemicals as well as know how to spray,” said Simon. “It’s quite technical, so our experience and qualifications as a registered chemical applicator reassure clients that they are getting the best service and advice.” Agman Spraying Taranaki is structured to service rural, industrial and council clients. “A significant part of our business is servicing the rural sector. We offer gun and boom spraying services. The majority of our gun-spraying is on gorse, but we also do spot-spraying for ragwort, thistles and any other weeds our client wants controlled. A knotty problem solved by Andy Bryenton

New Holland has come out on top of this year’s Edison Awards with a new twist on tying knots. It’s all about better baling and greater efficiency in the field. The humble knot is one of the earliest of human invention; an achievement for Cub Scouts, the key to building sailing ships, and, it seems, an issue for agriculture. Working out how to make a machine tie knots and thus make stable bales of hay was a big achievement back at the start of the mechanisation of farming. It was only this year that some of the basic kinks in bale knotting were worked out for good. New Holland premiered the first automatic baler in 1940 and has been trying to make these machines better, bigger and more robust ever since. In 2021, it introduced the BigBaler PLUS, which came equipped with LoopMaster technology. This new system of baling hay splices the two existing forms of knot-tying

into one mechanical process. A double loop is used, meaning zero offcut twine getting back into the field to snarl up the ecosystem or following machines. At the same time, the ties are tough and reliable, meaning it’s easier to handle the bales when they pop out of the chute. Carlo Lambro, New Holland brand president, was proud to take home the Edison Awards Gold Medal for this new concept. The awards are named for famous American inventor Thomas Alva Edison, a prolific technologist who invented the record player and the light bulb, among other items. “We are honoured to receive this recognition for our patented Loop Master technology, which brings significant

Cover cropping for sustainability by Andy Bryenton

Low residue crops such as maize, soybeans and other silage forage can leave behind nothing to shelter the soil beneath, in between plantings. Cover crops can fill in the gaps in the planting cycle. Soil that is not under cover and bound together by living biomass can be prey to erosion from wind and rain. The biota inside the soil strata can suffer because of this. Live roots in the soil are good for the fungi and microbes that operate at this level. Keeping this strata healthy is of vital importance, whether undersowing or notill techniques are being utilised or more conventional methods. A canopy of green also protects nutrients from run-off in extreme weather and blocks the break up of soil aggregates. There’s another level to this nutrient trapping effect, too. A cover crop will store nutrients from manure, mineralised organic nitrogen or underutilised fertiliser until the following years’ crop can utilise them, reducing nutrient run-off and leaching. That is all, of course, above and beyond the major reason for planting a late autumn and winter crop; more varied, reliable livestock grazing green mass. Another positive factor involves nitrogen. When a cover crop is chosen for its boost to soil nitrogen, the application of nitrogen fertiliser for the subsequent

main crop may be reduced. It can lower the bottom line for production, and environmentally, this cuts back on the use of nitrogen fertiliser that is produced using fossil fuels. There are risks as well as benefits to planting a cover crop. A careful analysis should be made of the soil type and the prevailing weed and pest ecosystem to ensure

that these factors can be controlled alongside two different uses for the same pasture area. That’s why the time to make a cover crop plan is now, in symbiosis with the main silage crop that’s already on farmer’s minds coming into

Big, powerful and brutal, the T-92 tank was the biggest deployed by the Allies in the second world war. With twin treads on each side and a gun so immense no turret could hold it, this monster was the equivalent of today’s gigantic open-field tractors. Look back in history, however, and it was the nimble little jeep that did more for victory. In the same way, small utility tractors are the all-purpose swiss army knives of the farming world, called into play to manoeuvre and work where their big brothers can’t go. A prime example of the breed is the long-established but still very versatile John Deere 3 series. It is not the smallest Deere in the shed, nor by far the biggest, but it’s been crafted to do two things with absolute aplomb. It’s easy to use and easy to adapt. Take the current 3038E, for example. It sits in a sweet spot for power and size, with fourwheel-drive for maximum traction in tight corners, a compact width to handle barn doors and farmyard gates, and a clutchless hydrostatic transmission, providing pedals for forward and reverse action. This last part is clever, as it unlocks the power of the 3038E’s Stage V diesel engine for the kind of jobs bigger tractors don’t usually get called on for. While a monster of the fields is made to plough ahead for hours at a time, its big mill ticking over to generate mountains of torque, a smaller machine will often be used to ferry feed about, unload trucks or tow a slasher. These are jobs that require a firm hand on the wheel and a quick shuttle between forward and reverse. Experienced, reliable, responsive, genuine quality you can trust. Available 24/7, with the most competitive rates. Call me for all your on-farm servicing, maintenance & repair requirements. Tractors Diggers UTV’s All Agricultural Machinery

John Deere’s 3038E is a versatile machine that puts ease of operation to the fore

Making it easy to wrangle the controls puts the 3038E in the zone where lifestyle block owners and all kinds of farmworkers can jump aboard and get to work intuitively. Here’s another neat trick. A halfpress on the brake will activate the diff lock, meaning that everything’s on one foot for traversing mud and sloped terrain. The natural mate with this tractor is the 300E loader, but there’s no

need to stop there. Like one of those modern battery-powered yard tools with multiple heads, the 3038E can be fitted with a host of PTO powered implements to specialise its tasks. True to form, these are also elementary to hitch up, thanks to John Deere’s proprietary iMatch QuickHitch system. If you need utility around the farm, this versatile little machine could be just the ticket; it’s a whole lot of hard work, made easy in a small package.

Same quality, new location Jeff Rawson is a principal and field operations coordinator for HPFS Solutions who says what he loves about agricultural fencing is the ‘diversity of work. Each client has a different need, different terrain or different style fence. It keeps it interesting’. Jeff could be building yards one day or dividing paddocks the next. Some of the work is a direct reflection of what is happening in the community at the time, such as fencing off riparian plantings and some is just plain old helping out farmers when they don’t have the time to do the fencing themselves. Established in 2015, HPFS Solutions has grown during the years from operating out of their lifestyle block in Mokoia to a new facility in the New Plymouth area. New clients and newer technical challenges on the terrain has also meant that they are expanding their equipment to reach even more ground and spaces. ‘We like to work smarter and ensuring our equipment is up to date with our client’s needs is critical in being as efficient as possible’. While fencing has always been a skilled job, today’s fencers need to have knowledge of quality products on the market that will last, an awareness of the long-term effects of the local environment, an understanding of the variety of fencing systems available and experience on a diversity of terrains.

76% of New Zealanders are concerned about “fake news” and its implications

The previous standards, set out as part of a broader range of environmental management targets for farmers, had been decried as over-legislative and unworkable, not only by protest groups such as Groundswell NZ but also industry monitors such as Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Now, these have been replaced with a more flexible environmental management approach. Details were included in a revised set of intensive winter grazing proposals, circulated for public consultation in late August. It’s an acknowledgement in principle that one size does not fit all. “We believe the government’s new proposed approach, which focusses on practical management by farmers, is more workable, and that’s progress,” said B+LNZ CEO Sam McIvor when the new regulations were shared. “Nevertheless, we still have concerns around the proposed 10-degree slope rule for winter grazing and the certified freshwater farm plan process.”

The government has compromised on ‘unworkable’ pugging and resowing rules that would have affected thousands of farmers and rural contractors

This separate part of the government’s farming plans aims to increase rural water purity. However, it has been marred by the roll-out of inaccurate mapping, which designated the wrong kinds of land for fencing and livestock restrictions. Farming groups lobbied hard to have the inaccurate mapping rolled back. “The government has proposed an improvement on the slope rule, but we still think the approach is more restrictive than it needs to be to manage the environmental risks,” Mr McIvor said. “For example, we’d like to see flexibility in situations where there is no receiving water body nearby.” As with some other recent central government initiatives, such as the civic

Three Waters concept, stakeholders in this regulation debate feel that there is a lack of data preventing them from tabling a solution. “Without having visibility of the exact text of the certified freshwater farm plan, and given the requirement to demonstrate environmental outcomes would be the same as the rules, we have reservations about how workable the proposed farm plan approach will actually be,” says Mr McIvor. “We are urging the government to work with industry on ensuring that the certified freshwater farm plan process is practical, effects-based and based on industry plans.”

Fresh off the success of the new Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 joint venture, Toyota has once again revealed its penchant for partnership, teaming up for a second time with Subaru to reinvent the sporty little 86. Imagined as a driver’s car when it debuted, the 86 took its name from the legendary Hachiroku Sprinter of the 1980s. A car immortalised not just by a dedicated track-day fandom in Japan but also in comic books and movies. Subaru added its know-how with boxer-layout engines to the mix to enable Toyota to drop the little car’s centre of gravity. Combined with narrow tyres, this produced the kind of driving experience that lit up smiles at even moderate speeds. Subaru made a near-identical looking BRZ model out of the partnership. Fast-forward to the present day, and a new joint venture is set to deliver the 2022 revision of both cars. First out of the blocks is the Toyota GR 86, with that ‘GR’ indicating that this is another project from Gazoo Racing, the flat-out high speed, high-performance division that acts as Toyota’s AMG. The new car looks great, with a more rounded appearance hinting more at the old classic Celica GT4 than the boxy 86 of yesteryear. Under the hood, there’s an extra 28 horsepower to be had from a fresh 2.4-litre boxer four, naturally aspirated for sharp response. In fact, everything about the 86 remains sharp in an industry where

sophomore designs often suffer from middle-aged spread. A six-speed manual gearbox remains the standard option to deliver power from the engine to the rear wheels, in a classic driver’s-car layout, and if you choose this option, there’s something else you’ll notice. Unlike in many modern cars, where electronic safety systems curb your enthusiasm, there’s a distinct lack of interference between you and the road here in the 86. With the auto trans, you’ll get the full modern wrap-around of safety reminders and nudges, but with a stick shift, it’s you and the car, following a pattern set by the original 86 and BRZ. Throughout history, it’s often been the small sports cars that have caught our imaginations rather than their bigger, bulkier and more powerful stablemates. Light and nimble often does the trick where bulk and ferocity doesn’t, and that’s the recipe for the new GR 86. If the new Supra, with its big six, is Toyota’s performance flagship, then this is the Japanese firm’s fast and agile little frigate, delivering more driving fun for every dollar.

Toyota’s 86 returns for 2022, with the GR badge indicating higher performance

However, there are problems ahead.” Trevor points out that climate change is forecast to cause the weather to be warmer and more extreme and says the last three seasons at Paparata have been drier and warmer. “We are making adjustments. Unsteady on three legs Important information for tripod tank owners, for a Kiwi-made, on-farm fuel tank that meets all compliance requirements, Protank products supplied by Petrotec Services fit the bill nicely. Does your on-farm fuel tank comply with current safety standards? If it’s a tripod tank, then unfortunately, it won’t. Three legs can be pretty wobbly, and it’s no surprise that approval for the manufacture of this style of tank was cancelled at the end of the last century. What may come as a surprise, however, is that if you do have a tripod tank, you may find your current fuel supplier will soon stop supplying. In a recent national accord, most fuel distributors agreed that they would stop filling tripod tanks from the end of 2021. Some fuel distributors have already decided not to deliver fuel to new customers with tripod tanks. Naturally, this decision means many tank owners will need to look at a replacement schedule. If you need a new tank, you’ll want to find something that ticks the following boxes: • A cost-effective, standards approved tank • A ladder that incorporates a

Clearing the air on methane by Andy Bryenton

This November, Green Party minister James Shaw will represent New Zealand in Glasgow, Scotland, at a summit on climate change mitigation, prompting questions on the flawed science used to calculate Kiwi farmers’ contribution.

At the core of this debate sits the role of ruminant methane in climate change. Dairy and dry stock farming advocates point to the major differences between mineral methane and biological methane in the fact that the two are conflated as one in many climate change models. “Methane is an easy target and farmers are a voting minority with little leverage,” says Robin Grieve, spokesperson for the humorously acronymed but scientifically very serious Facts About Ruminant Methane group. “Even the Climate Commission was happy to have ruminant methane emitters subsidise CO2 emitters because it was expedient.” “There is neither a future nor justice in any climate policies or targets that are based on a carbon accounting system that is so flawed and which massively overstates the impact of methane emissions from livestock. The system fails to take into account the cyclical nature of these emissions.” To clarify, methane generated from livestock is part of a cycle; it comes from CO2 trapped in plants and cycles back into plants again. Thus, every addition from farmed animals is matched by

a subtraction. It is the opposite of methane released from industrial and mining activities, which is not part of this biological cycle. Nevertheless, climate modelling treats all methane equally, justifying taxes and restrictions on farmers while allowing other methane and CO2 producers to maintain current levels. Hence the call from Facts About Ruminant Methane to address this misrepresentation in Glasgow, putting

the focus on reducing pollution from non-cyclical sources. “James Shaw needs to represent all New Zealanders and the good of the nation, not just his party and green interests,” says Mr Grieve. “Right now, our economy needs all the help it can get trying to survive Covid. It makes no sense cutting livestock production by 15% any time, let alone when debt is ballooning, and jobs are in jeopardy.”

Excavat meets the demand

Bert Hamilton and Joel Thomas established earthworks business Excavat in 2017, with one digger and a truck, taking on a few odd jobs for mates. In those four years, the business has expanded to accommodate the demand in more sizeable projects. “It’s snowballed, and we have had to start to take what was a little part-time business, a lot more seriously,” said Bert. “All we were doing was the groundworks that other companies didn’t really want to do because they were too small, too urgent or too hard to access.” With Bert as general manager and Joel as the operations manager, Excavat’s young, friendly and energetic team is keen to assist in any line-up of earthworks projects. Excavat has completed a wide variety of projects all over Taranaki. As Excavat has continued to expand its services, the machinery fleet has increased too. The business now covers a range of farmwork, commercial, residential, driveways and landscaping projects. “We have good modern gear that ensures we can get the job done.” Bert said a new laser blade attachment allows the team to get grassed areas and areas undergoing preparation for concrete or metal shed pads, perfectly flat and level. He has found the support received from the people in Taranaki for a relatively small and young business, has been outstanding.

The importance of minerals

by John Arts

In the last edition, I commented that most multi-style supplements over-promise but underdeliver. That is because most are formulated as a ‘one a day’ supplement and are often filled with too many B vitamins yet lack the minerals and antioxidants we need. Outright mineral deficiencies cause disease but of much greater importance is the number of diseases linked to sub-optimal minerals in our diet. Sub-optimal means less than our bodies need. If I could do an experiment it would be to give all New Zealanders a comprehensive multimineral, multivitamin and antioxidant and observe health patterns during a long period of time. I would not be surprised to see reductions in most chronic diseases. Farmers are very aware of the mineral deficiencies in our soil. I spoke to a farming client recently and he commented on the improvements to animal health when they added selenium and other minerals. He said the sheep went from being lethargic to full of energy. It is a real tragedy that we do not

incorporate such advice into human health. Perhaps the issue is that, unlike livestock, humans do not have a productivity value. When I recently reformulated my Cell-X multi-nutritional supplement, I took great care to ensure that minerals, like selenium and zinc, were at levels that support optimal health. Our immune system, indeed the health of every cell, requires these minerals to produce powerful enzymes that protect our cells, including immune cells, from damage and disease. I offer you a challenge. Take a good multi-nutritional supplement like Cell-X for three months and notice the difference. Most talk about more energy, better immunity, especially in winter and just feeling well. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. OPINION

Do your own research by Jane Gray

Why should you do your own research? It’s simple, really; you get the answers you are looking for. Let's stop using social media as a credible place for information. When Facebook, for instance, first came to light, it was a great way to keep in touch with what friends and family were doing. I have a lot of family overseas, so it was lovely to connect with them like this. Like everything, there is an evaluation period. The platform became a space for those to put everything up online, such as what they eat at a restaurant or what they were thinking at that moment. Unfortunately, some of that evaluation has become toxic in the extreme; radical content and just so many untruths that people seem to believe. Ask someone where they got their information from, and you can just about guarantee they will say social media. Community groups have become the playground for vehement opinions rather than what they were actually designed for. I go to a community group to see what is happening in the area, not to be told I’m an idiot because I choose to

be vaccinated or I support a particular political view. Social media is a great tool when used properly, but if you are relying on it to get well-rounded and considered advice — that is never going to happen. Social media is fed by individuals with their own agendas. The research will always be slanted to their viewpoint and often bears no resemblance to real life. I am often amazed about how abusive people get on Facebook should someone disagree with their particular viewpoint. If you put a point of view up for the public to see, why are you then so offended when some disagree with that point of view and why does it have to become abusive? Then get even more offended when that post with all of its radical commentary is taken down by the administration for being found untrue. In order to get good quality research make sure that it has been peerreviewed by people qualified in that field. It’s more likely to be a wellrounded document when others have looked at it.

Regulations require that there must be no ponding on farm races within 45m of the farm dairy. In the milk storage and collection area, the details go on, and food safety

FARM D A

However, what about that old standby on a dairy farm — the cowshed? Here, good design means efficient operation, and particularly where effluent is concerned. A well-situated and designed farm milking operation means efficiency of operation. Keeping milk away from contamination, of course, is a no-brainer. Design can also deal efficiently with that effluent byproduct that has to be dealt with. That starts with keeping the area easy to clean and maintain. The fall of the land is an important consideration so effluent can flow via gravity. The alternative is pumping, which is expensive, and it depends on reliable machinery components, and of course, a reliable power source at all times. Food Safety regulations for the dairy industry, notably the Farm Dairy Code of Practice NZCP1, require all floors of the farm dairy to be made of concrete or impervious material 10 metres from the milk storage room, receiving room and edges of the pit or milking platform. The minimum recommended fall for yards is one metre in 50, with all other areas one in 80 metres capable of being readily cleaned. In the case of yards and yard races, the shed needs to have a kerb that is a minimum of 150mm above the level of the yard surface. At yard entrances, the kerbs can be as low as 50mm. A kerb prevents soil and dung being washed over the sides of yards and yard races. At these places,
