IHC is encouraging farmers to support its newly-launched Lamb Programme

Last year was a challenging season for the rural sector. IHC’s Calf and Rural Scheme took a hit from Mycoplasma bovis, losing half its usual income. A large proportion of IHC’s programmes are not government-funded, so donations are essential for IHC to continue working in the community. IHC national fundraising manager Greg Millar is hoping farmers will now pledge a lamb or sheep to support children and adults with an intellectual disability in rural communities. “For more than 35 years, it’s been the dairy farmers who have given such generous support to the IHC Calf and Rural Scheme,” he said. “We simply couldn’t have done the work we do without their support, and we’re hoping New Zealand’s sheep farmers will join us too in this new Lamb Programme.” Farmers can pledge a physical lamb or sheep via the IHC website ihc.org. nz/lamb or advise a lamb has been set aside for IHC at saleyards. Other supporters of the programme can donate a virtual lamb for $150 through the same website. IHC acknowledges the sponsorship support and promotion that AgriVantage will provide to the Lamb Programme —

up to $25,000 this year. This amount will be the result of a $1 sponsorship from every 20kg bag of Sprayfo Primo Lamb milk replacer sold around the country. AgriVantage is the animal nutrition division of Chemiplas (NZ) Limited. AgriVantage’s national business manager Warren Tanner said IHC does important work in supporting people with intellectual disabilities in communities all around New Zealand. “We know that M bovis has negatively impacted the calf scheme and therefore, their fundraising efforts. “We saw an opportunity for AgriVantage to help make up some of the deficit and hopefully even exceed the IHC’s fundraising targets. “We’re encouraging lamb rearers and sheep farmers to pledge a lamb or two to IHC’s Lamb Programme this season. “Together with our farming communities, we hope to raise a total of $40,000 to help fund the work of IHC.” Awareness of the issues facing people with intellectual disabilities is raised through IHC’s charitable activities. These include an extensive advocacy programme, a one-to-one volunteer programme and the country’s largest specialist intellectual disability library.

Students’ farm visit filmed for television

Nineteen year seven science students, from Sacred Heart Girls’ College in New Plymouth, were filmed for Country Calendar during their visit to an award-winning farm last month. The visit was part of a national education programme inspiring students about opportunities in the food and fibre sector. A crew from the high-rating television show spent five days in Taranaki filming an episode featuring Sarah and Jarred Coogan and Bryan and Helen Hocken. The award-winning team co-own a 465-hectare sheep and beef farm, which is nestled in the rugged hills of Tarata, northeast of Stratford. Sarah and Jarred are active ambassadors of the agri-food sector and host school visits as part of a project run by New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF). The students visit coincided with lambing, and they asked questions about breeds of sheep, stocking rate, animal husbandry, management practices and profitability. “A lot of these girls have never been to a farm before, which I found surprising for Taranaki,” said the school’s head of science Jeremy Taylor. Jarred used two dogs to muster sheep and bulls before showing students a gully, which has been replanted with native trees. “Watching Jarred use George and Jake to muster the sheep was so interesting,” said 11-year-old student, Olivia Atherton. “A well-trained working dog is extremely useful when getting sheep off steep hills. We learned some working

dogs could reach speeds of up to 50km/h when they run.” The farm runs 2,340 mainly Romney breeding ewes, 690 hoggets and is expecting 3,800 lambs to be born this year. A highlight of the trip for all the girls was getting to bottle feed orphaned lambs inside the farm’s unique woolshed. “Feeding the lambs was so much fun. I’m considering becoming a farmer or training as a scientist so I can help farmers,” said 11-year-old Izy Bromell. The field trip is part of free learning resources the school has downloaded

from the Agrication website, which is run by NZYF and funded by the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP). “We probably wouldn’t have studied the unit if a farm visit wasn’t part of it,” said Jeremy. “It can be hard for busy teachers with no rural connections to find a farmer who’s willing to host a school visit. Having everything organised for us, including the bus, has been amazing. We’re really lucky to be given this opportunity,” said Jeremy. The episode of Country Calendar featuring the Coogans and Hockens is scheduled to be broadcast on TVNZ 1 in early November.

FLOWER FARMER AND FLORIST, SARAH HAWKLESS, RETURNED TO HER COUNTRY ROOTS AFTER A FEW YEARS CONSIDERING CAREER OPTIONS.

rowing up on a farm near Taumarunui, Sarah was surrounded by wide-open spaces, deep valleys and rugged hills. With an eye for design and colour, she initially set out to study towards a career in graphic design. Although Sarah loved design work, she found after completing her studies that the prospect of sitting in front of a computer all day, every day, had lost its appeal. Instead, she moved

back to Taumarunui and was employed by a supermarket, still holding on to the dream of running her own business. “It took many years of soul-searching to find out exactly what I wanted to do,” she said. Sarah moved to Stratford, bought a villa in Stratford and began renovating the property. It was around this time she became interested in gardening and discovered the joy of growing plants. “I did start with vegetables, all the weird and wonderful, colourful varieties, and it did cross my mind to grow them commercially. in kitchens, I wanted no bar of the paperwork that would require.” Sarah began to squeeze flowers into her vegetable garden, finding not only a new passion but also a career. “I somehow stumbled on to discovering that flower farmer, and even a farmer florist, was an actual thing. It finally felt like I had found something that truly resonated with me — being the perfect combination of both growing and design.” Mid-renovation, Sarah moved back to Taumarunui. “To make the most of being back, I hijacked a paddock off my parents’ family farm to keep growing and learning more about flowers.” Sarah used this area to grow a variety of flowers through a trial season. With help from her parents in Stratford, and with Sarah travelling back and forth every other weekend, the villa’s renovations were completed and the property sold. Initially, she was planning to reinvest in another property with more land. However, when her parents bought a property to develop and subdivide, she took the opportunity to test her business out on their land. Sarah moved back to Stratford and established her flower farm, Emerden, on a full-time basis. She said the first season in Stratford was a nightmare. Insects, disease pressure, the remnants of two tropical cyclones howling through the region, and lack of late succession flowering meant Sarah only had a three week season that first

year. She is now about to start her third season. Sarah grows a wide variety of flowers outdoors, including spring bulbs, annuals, dahlias and garden roses. Last season she constructed a large tunnel house to provide rain and wind protection for some of the more vulnerable crops. Flowers from Emerden are sold to florists locally and further afield. During the past summer, Sarah also sold her flowers at the Seaside Market in New Plymouth. “I have a little pop-up stall at Billow Bakery, in New Plymouth, who have been beyond supportive. I also have bouquets available to order on my website during

the season and am slowly taking on doing wedding flowers as well.” Sarah has found growing so many crops for both wholesale to florists, and her own floristry work, is a constant balance of planning quantities, space and timings. Despite the challenges, Sarah finds pleasure and beauty in the changing seasons. “There’s always something new blooming to get excited by in spring. Summer is long days and endless beautiful bounty. The changing colours of autumn are my favourite palettes, and the slow, steady pace of the winter field pack-down — clearing a clean slate to do it all over again.”

Apart from the bulbs and tubers, Sarah grows all of the flowers from seed except for the odd slower or more difficult to grow varieties. She is trying to increase Emerden’s spring flower quantities this year. Although Sarah handles most of the day-to-day farming and selling, she now has a casual part-time worker to help with the fieldwork most of the year. “I’m fortunate and grateful that my parents and grandparents have been so very supportive and helpful with the big jobs.” In the near future, Sarah plans to move Emerden to a permanent location, enabling her to further build and grow the business.

IMPROVING FARMER

WELLBEING by Denise Gunn The award-winning Fit 4 Farming Trust is committed to improving rural health, with a vision for New Zealand to be the fittest, healthiest farming nation in the world.

ounder and former farmer, Ian Handcock, knows firsthand the benefits of physical fitness and the link to mental wellbeing. With a background of working in both the building and dairy farming industries, Ian is also a keen marathon runner, endurance cyclist and rugby coach. He has incorporated his skills and knowledge to shape the Fit 4 Farming Trust. The trust’s initial concept was developed when Ian attended the 2014 Kellogg’s rural leaders programme. “I remembered when I went from building to farming, I found dairy farming physically less demanding,” said Ian. “Suspecting there was a drop-off in the physical health of farmers due to the changing nature of farming, I did

my project on farmer fitness. I have always had an interest in how some people seem to be happier or others that achieve more.” Now working as a farm consultant, Ian is keen to help farmers improve their physical fitness levels and reach their goals. “I played ruby, then coached rugby right up until 2014. I always felt the fitter I was, the happier I was. I achieved more, enjoyed sport and life more and accomplished more in a year. I used the same philosophy when coaching sport and coached three unbeaten rugby teams in the Thames Valley. I also love strategy, and use techniques learnt through rugby to help coach farmers now.” Four years ago, Ian took up running, with two 100km ultra-

marathons as well as numerous shorter distances now under his belt. He has also completed the 400km K2 oneday cycle challenge in Coromandel and biked twice around Lake Taupo. The Fit 4 Farming’s 1,400km cycle tour of rural New Zealand in 2016 aimed to raise awareness of the link between farmers physical fitness and mental wellbeing. “We promote balancing work with an active lifestyle to improve health and happiness,” said Ian. “The Fit 4 Farming’s logo portrays the workboot and the running shoe representing the balance between work and recreation. The name embodies personal wellbeing and the ability to perform your job to the best of your capability.” “In 2017, I organised the 12-hour milking world record where one man milked over 5,000 cows. It promoted good nutrition and preparing physically for peak season.” Ian is currently arranging a baton relay through rural New Zealand to illustrate how people disconnect from their work to connect with others. The trust has expanded to include coaching farmers and wellbeing workshops too. “The ultimate outcome would be to have farmers fit and healthy enough to manage the stresses of modernday farming. “I will add it is not just farmers who are feeling the stress. We all have times when we feel overwhelmed and find it

difficult to rationalise our thoughts.” Ian said active people have a positive attitude to life, confidence in decisionmaking, better time management, create positive cultures and contribute to their communities. “They have a better metabolism, lower blood pressure, and can manage their weight better, which equates to better health. They will potentially suffer fewer injuries, have less burnout and will stay in the industry for longer. “Being able to step away from your farm with a recreation activity allows you to organise your mind and free some of the clutter from living in the job 24/7. No one can operate at 100 per cent all the time without a mental break. Physical activity allows this to happen. The other important fact is the socialisation that sports give you.” Ian is in the process of taking Fit 4 Farming completely under his wing and winding up the trust. “I want to continue doing events that get rural people out there and active to improve their health.” Fit 4 Farming workshops will be advertised on the organisation’s Facebook page. “The only way to really improve physical fitness is to be active. However, I can structure a specific workshop to cater for organisations that are serious about improving wellbeing. My take on life is we can do much more than we think. We just need to believe it and have support that believes in you too,” said Ian.

DAIRY AWARDS SECURE CAREER DIRECTION by Denise Gunn Kate Thomson’s experience entering the Taranaki Dairy Industry Awards helped to seal her career choice.

arming was always going to feature in Kate’s life. Her passion for the industry began through helping her father on the farm he was managing near Nightcaps, deep in the heart of Southland. “I went on-farm with dad every waking minute I could,” she said. By the age of 14, Kate was helping to get the cows in, milking and putting up fences. Four years ago she moved to Hawke’s Bay, taking up work as a shepherd on a sheep and beef station. The station, which runs side-by-side with two dairy units and another station, grows crops as well as grazing steers and heifers for the dairy units. In early 2017 Kate moved to Taranaki and took up work as a meat processor for Silver Fern Farms. Shortly afterwards, she began her current farm assistant

position on Hamish and Jo Gibbs’ dairy farm in Alton. “I was only supposed to be at my job with Jo and Hamish for a maximum of six months, as I was going to return to study. I’m still here nearly three seasons down the track.” “They’ve helped me grow so much by putting me through courses and seminars, and having faith in me that I can be left alone for a week on-farm by myself every now and again,” said Kate. At peak, a herd of 214 Jersey cows are milked through a 24-aside herringbone shed on the 70ha farm. The herd produced 100,000kgMS for the 2018/19 season. “We grow oats (winter crop) and chicory (summer crop). They both work very well on our farm. Chicory has a deep taproot, so it thrives in summer.

Golden Years

Sixties and beyond by Ann van Engelen

The golden years of life are a time when although you no longer work as such, many people still do, and social activity options can be many or few. For many people, turning 65 years old is a time of new possibilities and opportunities, yet for others, retirement is less likely to mean withdrawing from full-time paid work. They continue in paid or volunteer work or many reasons. These could be financial considerations, or because they want to contribute, be occupied and connected to their community. If you are still in paid work, you can still receive your NZ superannuation if you are eligible while earning an income. Your earnings, plus your super, may be taxed at a higher rate. More information is available from Work and Income for each individual situation. Older workers may worry that employers will not value them or discriminate against them because of their age, but there is a skills shortage and employers have much to gain by employing older people. many social activities you can take part in during the golden years. Probus, gardening clubs, RSAs, sports, sailing and volunteering are just some options. A range of community organisations relies on volunteers. Volunteer NZ is an organisation that matches a person with the various opportunities available in your area that suits your interests and skills. Age Concern also has information on how you can get involved in their Accredited Visiting Service if you have an hour or so a week to spare and would like to volunteer to spend time with another older person. Getting out of the house to socialise with others when you can, breaks up the monotony of a sometimes everyday routine. Travel is another option that the older generation can often be involved. Whether a cruise, overseas or local travel, being on the move and discovering new places can help not just add spark to your life but create new friendships and interests in activities that you may not have been able to participate in during the younger years.

A pain in the … by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)

The best part of what I do is to hear back from clients who have less pain and more mobility. If you are in pain, the first step should be a visit to your health practitioner for an accurate diagnosis. For the next few editions, we will look at the most common causes of pain and the measures we can take to help. In all cases, these measures are designed to help restore your body’s natural healing processes, which can be greatly affected by disease. Most pain is either caused or worsened by tissue inflammation. For example, in osteoarthritis, the immune system response to cartilage loss is inflammation. It can cause fluid accumulation, swelling, loss of function and invariably pain. An anti-inflammator y diet combined with well-formulated supplements can help. My preference is to have equal amounts of chondroitin and glucosamine with a potent curcumin (turmeric) extract and solid doses of fish oils. Of these chondroitin, sulphate is the most important as it helps support several joint healing processes damaged by arthritis. In most cases, I start with 1,600mg of chondroitin and glucosamine plus

curcumin to help improve cartilage function. Chondroitin is so effective that it is now available in Europe on prescription. During the past six months, I have been helping a man in his 70s with long-term knee osteoarthritis with some damage from his rugby years. He was really struggling with pain and mobility and in his own words is now 95% better. All he has now is a few niggles. The key is to use multiple measures that target the processes that help maintain healthy joints. The answer is not diet or supplements. The answer is to stimulate dormant healing processes overwhelmed by degenerative changes to joints. Your body does the rest. NEW PLYMOUTH

One of art’s true originators by Andy Bryenton

New Plymouth has a special place in the world of arts and culture, the only gallery space in the country dedicated to one artist. That space is the Govett-Brewster gallery, and in the striking mirrored edifice, which was opened to expand it in 2015, you will enter the world of Len Lye.

M A C J AY S Born in 1901, just as the ‘father of New Plymouth’ Frederic Carrington passed away, Len Lye was a different kind of adventurer. Motion and vision were his passions, and he spent a lifetime trying to capture them without pinning them down. It led to a career at the forefront of art and cinema, not just here but worldwide. Leonard Charles Huia Lye, to give his full name, could take the prosaic and everyday, and make it fantastical. An example was his 1933 short film The Peanut Vendor, which is still ranked as one of the most innovative and strange sequences of animation ever produced. It has influenced works by countless later film-makers in stop motion, from Tim Burton to the music videos of Primus and Tool. Another short film, A Colour Box, was meant to advertise parcel postage. Lye only used a camera for the title card. We don’t know how well it promoted parcel post, but it did win many awards at European film festivals. During the war years, Lye created a film for the training of soldiers called Kill or Be Killed, which elevated sniper training to fine art, developing several cinematic techniques in the process, such as the use of a moving ‘first-person’ camera. He was a writer and poet, artistic theoretician and a sculptor who crafted what he called ‘tangibles’, moving works such as the Wind Wand, which now graces the New Plymouth waterfront. Known as an ‘artist’s artist’ he has been the subject of an opera, a solo exhibition at

Mark Probyn is an engineer by trade and developed the Dual Blast system to cater to the industrial, commercial and residential environment. “Engineering comes in handy for the job as you understand the different equipment and what the properties of steel involved in various aspects of the job. I have made most of the specialised equipment myself to cater for a wide range of projects,” says Mark. With a selection of nozzles, guns and other equipment, Mark is able to provide a range of cleaning and blasting solutions for a variety of projects and assets such as machinery, vehicle chassis (pre-COF clean), steel and concrete, masonry work and swimming pools. “Dual Blast is a sand-assisted water blaster that is not aggressive like pure sandblasting. I don’t use a noisy air compressor, so the equipment is quiet and animal-friendly. “Being a wet system there is no dust with paint, and you don’t have to strip stuff down as much. “Our mobile service offers convenience for cleaning and blasting solutions around your farm or lifestyle property. “This includes rust removal, paint stripping and preparation, graffiti removal, domestic blasting, brick restoration and more.” Dual Blast cleans

I clean equipment including harvesting gear, diggers and excavators, silage and haymaking equipment that needs an abrasive clean, without the need to dismantle or the high volume of sand that is known to destroy components. “Assisted water blasting is not as aggressive for removing rust from your vehicle or equipment, and taking care

of rust early stops the spread. With Dual Blast you don’t have to worry about excessively heating the panels or sand getting into places it shouldn’t. A WARM WELCOME TO MILIFE NEW PLYMOUTH Hi, I’m Angela, Village Manager at MiLife New Plymouth. For those of you who haven’t heard of us, we operate two independent lifestyle retirement villages in Bell Block. MiLife Bell Vista at 131 Mangati Road is a fully developed village with 67 villas. Just a short walk to the beach and coastal walkway, it offers a friendly community in a lovely garden setting. MiLife on Wills is our latest development and we are now welcoming our first residents. Located at 49 Wills Road, the village will be a small, boutique retirement option with 27 villas in total to be completed over the next two years. There is a unique feel about MiLife villages that visitors often comment on. The villages provide personal, friendly communities and are of a size that allow us to maintain personal contact with our residents and their families. There are so many benefits that independent retirement living can offer. Our resident comments paint the best picture of how moving to MiLife has changed their lives.

Sue

Bruce and Rita Nine years ago Bruce’s eyesight was starting to deteriorate, our three daughters and their families were all living in New Plymouth and keen for us to make the move from Hawera to be closer to them. We looked at several retirement villages but weren’t too keen. Then we saw an ad in the Daily News advertising MiLife. We went to take a look and it ticked all our boxes. We loved being able to walk to the beach, the Shopping Centre, Medical Centre and Pharmacy. We are not as energetic as we used to be but still enjoy all the activities and just love living here!

I have lived at MiLife Bell Vista for six years, in which time I have made many wonderful friends. The village is a community in the true sense of the word — everyone looks out for each other. We have many interesting village activities and the staff and management are very competent and friendly. I couldn’t wish for a better place to spend my retirement.

Del I have lived at MiLife Bell Vista for nine years. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I am extremely happy. The village activities offer so many choices, our calendar is always full. I can join in if I wish, and also continue to have other interests, I read a lot, have my computer, potter in the garden and I’m a self-confessed TV addict! I enjoy a safe and secure environment in a caring community of friends. The time was right for me to come here, time to make my own decisions and not wait for family to have to do it for me, highly recommended!

Dennis and Gabrielle We had discussed options of what would be our next step, we lived on a property with large gardens and orchards and it was a never-ending workload. We had first looked at MiLife Bell Vista 12 months previously and we liked the idea of village living. An Open Day was advertised a year later and this time when we went back, we were sure, yes this is where we want to live. It is an ideal lifestyle for us as we can pack up and head off on a whim and know everything will be still be here when we get back, lawns mowed, gardens looking beautiful and wonderful, caring people around should we ever need help. Our motto — “Do it sooner rather than later!”

CONSIDERING A MOVE? We currently have different villa options available at both MiLife Bell Vista and MiLife on Wills. These sunny, gorgeous homes provide you with private outdoor areas, ample living space, light modern kitchens and easy-care bathrooms.

Visit our villages at our Open Day on Sunday 22 September between 11am and 3pm. Both villages will be open for you to view and with just a short drive between the two you can take a good look at what MiLife has to offer. Let MiLife make a difference in your life.

A tale of two adventurers

by Andy Bryenton

The story of New Plymouth is a story of two very different men, both of whom shared the Victorian British spirit of adventure and progress, and both of whom applied it in different ways, according to their very different backgrounds. Without either one, the thriving regional hub we know today would not be at all the same; it may not even exist at all. The first of these men came from very humble beginnings, as a poor boy in the slums of Durham. Taking to sea, Richard ‘Dicky’ Barrett became an accomplished sailor, travelling the world and, in the words of the son of New Zealand Company founder Edward Wakefield “fond of relating his wild adventures and hairs-breadth scrapes”. Barrett came to Ngamotu, the site of modern New Plymouth, as early as 1828, trading muskets and metal goods for food and flax fibre with the Te Atiawa people. He went on to marry the daughter of a powerful local chief and taught himself the basics of Te Reo Maori. Meanwhile, halfway around the world, a very different man was undertaking

training, which would see him hailed as the ‘father of New Plymouth’. From a very different background indeed, Frederic Carrington was born in Essex, the son of a decorated Captain of Marines. Determinedly socially aware, he entered the ordnance survey department and spent 15 years honing his craft as a meticulous surveyor, gaining a reputation by mapping wild areas of Scotland. When the Plymouth Company was founded, to attract settlers to a new town in New Zealand, Carrington took up the duty of surveying what would become New Plymouth. He also took along his brother, the wonderfully named Augustus Octavius Croker Carrington, as his assistant.

S P O T L I G H T O N N E W P LY M O U T H During the intervening time, Dicky Barrett had cemented his favour with the Maori people of Ngamotu, now a known trading post for European ships. He and some former crewmates, both Maori and European (he later recalled the names Akerau, Akers, Tamiriri, Wright, Kopiri, Phillips, and Olive) fought a fierce defence of the Otaka Pa alongside the local tribe against Waikato invaders. During the battle, they were forced to improvise by loading cannon with cutlery, nails and stones, but eventually, the warriors from the north retreated. Unfortunately, Barrett’s fame for his exploits saw him named as a negotiator and translator during the purchase of vast swathes of land in Taranaki. That was hardly ideal, as his contemporaries recognised that he had a very poor grasp of te reo, instead, speaking a ‘pidgin’ creole of whaler slang, English and mispronounced Maori. Thus, as the first of the Plymouth Company’s settlers set sail on the William Bryan in late 1840, and as Frederick Carrington, the company’s chief surveyor arrived in Wellington aboard the London, the scene was set for disputes. In 1841, the pair travelled together to New Plymouth, two men unalike in appearance (Carrington was tall and lean, Barrett described as ‘all over round’) and background, and even in their approach to the new settlement. However, definitely of one mind. Carrington saw something beyond the surface of the land, however. His scientific eye was drawn by the rich

ironsands of Taranaki, and the potential of these deposits to help fuel the Victorian age’s desire for iron and steel. He even travelled to the Great Exhibition in London, in 1851 to showcase the qualities of the Taranaki sands. At a technical festival where Colt displayed the first modern pistols, Matthew Brady took some of the first-ever photographs, and Frederick Blakewell presented a primitive form of the fax machine, Carrington’s idea to smelt good iron from the sands in a far off colony was somewhat overshadowed. However, his skills at mapping and in solving mining issues won him a medal of commendation, and he enjoyed royal favour by gifting a selection of Maori artefacts to the Crown. By 1857 he was back in New Zealand, now the official government engineering surveyor for Taranaki. In the interim, Barrett, despite being recorded by many sources as an abysmal translator (the 1843 Land Commission hearing testified that, on being tested, he “turned a 1,600word document, written in English, into 115 meaningless Maori ones”) enjoyed the favour of the Wakefields — up to a point. He even became for a time, unofficial harbour master of New Plymouth. However, the ‘point’ came when his bungled translations led to outright hostilities between the settlers and local Maori people, who had not understood Barrett’s attempted purchase of a large tract of Taranaki. He was blamed by Governor FitzRoy and

the settlers too, dying in political exile, though with a flourish of showmanship and mystery, as he had lived. Perhaps he succumbed to a heart attack, as one story has it. Another has him dying from wounds suffered in a battle with an angry whale off the Taranaki coast. His name lives on in two reefs, a lagoon, and many parks and streets in New Plymouth. Alternately, Carrington did become master of the town’s harbour, laying the first stone of the breakwater with tools made from the ironsand he had such hopes for. Forty years had passed since

Any Shape Any Size Anywhere!

he first surveyed the town, and now it was coming of age. As superintendent of the region, it was his pleasure to open Pukekura Park botanical gardens and to watch the settlement he had planned in his mind become a place of Victorian-era architecture and values. Carrington lived through until 1901, passing on as the Victorian age came to a close. He is remembered in the name of one of the most important roads in New Plymouth, and a recently erected statue of him, staring through the eyepiece of his theodolite, celebrates him as the ‘father’ of the town.

Caring for top crops Central Spraying Services’ Rick Coplestone started out at the age of 28, purchasing and running the family farm out at Pukengahu, Stratford, and with his passion for farming he became interested in the spraying side and what was good for his crops. “I started up my spraying business as Rick Coplestone Ground Spraying in 1990 and my first applicator was a David Brown 1490 tractor — I was really a one-man-band,” says Rick. “Now 29-years down the track I’m known as Central Spraying Services, I have three full-time staff, two spray drivers and my office manager, and also a contractor in the busy season. “My fleet now consists of a Fendt Tractor, Iveco truck and a Mitsubishi truck. All my vehicles are fitted with a GPS tracker unit, which shows the driver exactly where they have tracked, and we can print or email our clients with areas on the farm that have been sprayed. and fodder beet plus pasture renovating and giant buttercup control.” Rick is a certified chemical applicator registered with the rural contractors and holds a valid National Certificate in Agrichem Application — which is all-important with current laws governing the handling of chemicals. Central Spraying is also the depot for Agrecovery recyclable containers, which over the last year has taken off with farmers bringing in their chemical and drench containers. If we enter a property with containers, we will always take them back with us. We will also leave with extra containers if the farmer wants a clean-up. I’ve enjoyed the last 29 years and have excellent staff — so I’ll probably be here for a whole lot longer.”

Odds and clods busted down to size by Andy Bryenton

Unlike with other agricultural implements such as the plough, we know who invented the harrow in ancient times. As the growth of grains other than rice was popularised in the northern Chinese empire in around 500AD, new tools were needed to create a good seedbed, and break up the earth without causing the formation of hardpan. Enter Jia Sixie, an ambitious official in the equivalent to our modern department of agriculture, Jia wrote about a plan to use a specialist tool to break up the clods of earth disrupted by ploughing, creating a finer tilth layer, preventing the growth of weeds and the spread of insect pests. The first such advancement in Europe was brought to England by William the Conqueror with his French knights in 1066. So important was the harrow to improved farming (which, of course, fed and paid for more knights) that it’s depicted in the Bayeux tapestry, alongside the battle of Hastings itself.

Following this came the spring-tine harrow, developed by the Germans in the 1600s. Its creator, by the surname of Ecker, was granted a title and coat of arms for his innovation, which took the concept of a horse-drawn harrow further than the mesh of wooden staves and metal claws, or chains with spikes that had come before. Still, the aim was to follow after the plough, breaking up large lumps of heavy earth into a pea-sized, less dense consistency to make a perfect seedbed. These bigger, heavier harrows also covered up seed after sowing and could be used to roughly disrupt weed

QUAD BIKE SAFETY growth, giving seed a better chance. Mighty disc harrows, larger again, were used in the plains of the early United States to break-in previously unfarmed land. However, it’s thought that their overuse in soils unsuitable for western-style farming may have contributed to the dust bowl disaster so vividly written about in The Grapes of Wrath. With the advent of the tractor

and hydraulic power, the modern harrow was born, incorporating several sets of independently turning tines. Since the 1960s, the use of this kind of harrow has exploded. It comes with the benefit of not turning over the layers of soil but keeping them stratiated, thus keeping dormant weed and pest seeds from competing with precision-sown crops.

The will, the skill and the drill by Andy Bryenton

With 2.7 billion tonnes of edible crops grown worldwide across 2.1 billion acres, utilising more than nine billion dollars worth of specialist planting equipment, the relationship between modern farming and the seed drill is a serious one. The quest for accuracy in seed placement and the coaxial placement of vital nutrients and fertilisers have seen some sophisticated machines surface. It’s fair to say that there are none like the CX-6, by Canadian firm Clean Seed. With no less than 17 new patents covering aspects of its design, the CX-6 is a monster of a seed drill, a rolling testlab for future undersowing and precise seed placement technologies. While its immense, 35-tonne bulk is best suited to the wide-open fields of the American north and midwest, the lessons learned and the tech innovations developed for the CX-6 may well pave the way for implements that work better on Kiwi farms as well. It began with the realisation by some farmers that while pneumatic seed drills are faster than the old box drills of yesteryear, having all the seed come from a central hopper can cause bunching and clumping, or seed rolling and bouncing in the trench. The aim of the CX-6 is just that; to precisely aim every single seed and its little package of fertiliser like a bullet into the soil, at a very precise depth. Digital metering

was the key, and a series of smaller secondary seed and fertiliser holding tanks atop each row. Farmers can be as creative as they wish with mixtures of seed and nutrient, as they are pre-mixed right before they go down the chute and hit the soil. There are 360 individual precisely controlled electric motors in the CX-6 set-up, all controlled wirelessly from the tractor cab. That’s 360 different possible combinations across the entire machine each second, as a spiked coulter opens the earth and a precision placement head follows on, dropping in the product. With six tanks to combine from, the CX-6 can blend fertiliser components such as potassium and nitrogen, for example, to suit not just different fields, but different areas in the same field according to pre-

When irrigation and fertiliser must be carefully metered, seed placement becomes vitally important too, as seen from this satellite photo of intensive agriculture

recorded soil data. In fact, the precision of Clean Seed’s technology is such, that for once, it’s the IT field that’s racing to

catch up, with programs able to display the true resolution of the precision seeder’s operation.

Cheese champions challenge the world by Andy Bryenton

In an industry where innovation and added value have long been heralded as the way to move beyond the volatile marketbased fluctuations of bulk supply and into a premium space, the cornerstone event for world dairy may just be the planet’s top cheese awards, held this year in Bergamo, Italy. Last year’s awards, situated in Norway, brought together 3,472 of the best cheeses on earth for a single day of discerning tasting, as artisans in the craft faced a formidable panel of expert judges. Two of our local cheeses made the grade, with both Kaimahi and Mercer cheeses taking home bronze medals in what is considered the toughest test of cheeses anywhere. This is a great result, of course, but considering the recognised pre-eminence of Kiwi dairying

on the world stage, there are high hopes for an even better showing as cheese gourmands gather in October for this year’s Italian leg of the competition. No less than 41 nations competed last year; this year the number has grown. It’s a testament to the fact that global consumers of dairy products are becoming more refined in their tastes as they become more well informed as to the options out there. Otherwise, inaccessible products for

New Zealand cheese artisans will take on the world’s best in Bergamo, Italy next month an indication that we can add value to dairy for an expanding gourmet market

the gourmet kitchen are now simply a click away online, and specialist stores proliferate in major cities to promote global cuisine. The rise of the small to medium premium producer has seen big upsets in other areas of top-end consumables, where those applying skill and dedication have punched well above their weight. No matter what the outcome in terms of a medal haul come October, the fact that the world cheese awards

are on the radar for so many more customers is an indication that New Zealand’s dairy industry has a major opportunity to add value before export. Leveraging our positive global image and credentials to beat the best of Europe at the cheesemaking game would be the cream rising to the top, as many of us can attest that our local cheeses are already a cut above those from their nations of origin. Now it’s time to convince the judges!
