An independent review into the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards (NZDIA) revocation of the national Share Farmer of the Year title and merit awards from Nick and Rosemarie Bertram, has been completed. The review was undertaken by Susan Hughes QC when tweets published by Mr Bertram in 2017, and still live in 2020, were found to be contrary to the standards expected by the NZDIA Trust. As a result, the award was revoked from the couple. The general manager and other trustees, including the chair, were unaware of the tweets until after the winner had been announced. After speaking with all those directly involved, the report gained further details. Susan Hughes, QC, said in conclusion that “it is clear that all I have interviewed are passionate about the dairy industry. All want the New Zealand dairy industry to be seen as world-leading; all strive for excellence. “All of those interviewed expressed sadness that such an event could have been avoided if the tweet was declared as part of the declaration or if the matter had been raised.” Ms Hughes suggests it is important that “all involved in these awards recognise the dangers of social media and the need to remind all parties of this issue at repeated points along the application trajectory, so as to avoid a repetition of these events.” Following the report, the trust formed a review committee comprising trustees

with no prior knowledge of the tweets or conflict of interest and sought a legal opinion for guidance. “The mission of the NZDIA is to provide a platform to reward excellence and showcase best practice within the farming sector,” said NZDIA Trust chair, Natasha Tere. “This includes rewarding leaders and building respect and pride for the industry. A title holder is an ambassador for NZDIA and the farming community as a whole.” “Where an entrant has been disqualified as a result of falling short of the required standards, reallocation of the place to the next place-getter is fair and reasonable and recognises the purpose set out in the trust’s mission and vision statements to recognise achievement in the industry and reward leadership,” she said. With this in mind, the title of 2020 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year has been offered to Sarah and Aidan Stevenson, from Waikato, which they have accepted. Runners-up are Samuel and Karen Bennett from Southland. Third placegetters are Simon and Natasha Wilkes from Taranaki. The Wilkes are 50/50 herd-owning sharemilkers on Natasha’s parents’

SUCCESSFUL START TO DAIRY CAREER by Denise Gunn Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year runner-up, Meek Cawili, began his agricultural career in the Philippines.

F

rom a young age, Meek held an interest in animals, which led to an involvement with his family’s chicken layer production venture. He also graduated from an animal husbandry course, which covered ruminant animals, including goats, cattle and buffalo. Meek said he was inspired by his father, who was into agribusiness, to study animal husbandry. “After graduation, I found myself working here in New Zealand with dairy farming.” The 25-year-old is now in his third year in the dairy industry. His first position was as an assistant farmhand,

working for Joshua and Nichola Scott on Hudson’s Trust Farms at Ohangai. Meek then moved to an assistant farm manager position on Grant Pease’s 75ha Mangatoki property near Eltham. The farm is contract milked by Nestor Eligado, with a herd of 250 Kiwicross cows. Now into his second season on the farm, Meek was recently promoted to farm manager. Studies have continued with Meek gaining a New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Level 3) from Primary ITO. He is currently studying towards level four. “I plan, after this, to pursue Agribusiness (Level 5) to have an in-

depth knowledge about the business side of the industry.” Meek manages the farm as though it was his own, implementing strategies and procedures in farm management to make it work more efficiently. He also enjoys using modern technology in dairy farming. The farm operates on a DairyNZ Production System Two. Sixty-nine hectares of the property are in grass, and the rest is crops. Oats and turnips are grown on the property as winter and summer crops. “These crops helped us through the season for when we had a high stocking rate,” said Meek. “Last summer, we had three cuts of our oats. This was because we stripgrazed the oats paddock, which is just beside the shed, one to two hours before the afternoon milking.” Last season’s milk production goal was 110,000kgMS. However, due to the summer drought, that figure dropped slightly to 106,000kgMS. The herd is milked through a 30-aside herringbone shed. “We again aim for 110,00kgMS this next season.” Meek acknowledges understanding the cultural differences between the Philippines and New Zealand was a big challenge during his first year working. “With the help of mentors and colleagues I’ve overcome, I now understand how to get along with the conditions of farming here in New Zealand. He said being away from his family in the Philippines is also difficult. “Good thing there is the internet to help with coping and communicating with family afar. Also, one thing that helped me was the community that I am involved with. I am part of a Filipino

He also enjoyed being involved in the Taranaki Dairy Industry Association Awards. In addition to placing second in the dairy trainee section, Meek also won the Primo Wireless Community and Industry Involvement award. Meek’s short-term aim is to achieve the targets on his current farm. “If God will allow, I may look for a bigger farm for full contract milking work next season.”

WITH RURAL LIFE BY DENISE GUNN A rural background has influenced fibre artist Viv Davy’s life as she wandered the world with large looms in her luggage.

iv’s art practice began with woven and dyed textiles many years ago. “My mother was a very gifted hand-knitter, and she taught me at a very young age to knit. This led me to spinning in the early 1970s, with the next step being hand-weaving on a four-harness floor loom. Not long after, I acquired an eight-harness loom and then there was no stopping me.” Viv attended classes and learnt techniques from various tutors. Then in 1980, she took her looms and bales of New Zealand raw wool and yarns to Canada. While studying at the Ontario

College of Art and Design, she acquired a Swedish drawloom. “It opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me.” After gaining a diploma in woven textile design, Viv returned to New Zealand in 1996, settling with her family in Opunake. Throughout Viv’s travels, she has kept connected to her family’s farming background, most often choosing to live on a lifestyle block with gardens and animals. The family operates a permaculture, organic food forest on their property. “My current garden contains most of

I am very committed to the slow-making movement and aim at a zero-waste practice, as well as being free from artificial chemicals. Allnatural fibres are used for my various makings nowadays.” Viv harvests traditional dye plants, such as woad and madder, as well as gathering native vegetation for her slowmaking dyeing practice.

“I love to fuse the old with the local to value equally the contribution of heritage and environment to my practice.” Viv’s handweaving is done on traditional manual looms, including a Swedish 70-harness drawloom. “The rhythms and patterns of working on these time-honoured machines resonate with my interest in communicating the value of the mundane and our natural world. My large drawloom takes me 80 hours to dress

Fibre artist Viv Davy with her loom without starting to weave. My large tapestries are worked on over a period of years, not weeks. Other works can be done within a few hours. It all depends on the complexity of the project.” For the large-scale tapestries, Viv works from photos. After deciding on a project, Viv selects the yarns and other materials to be used, then winds a warp to thread the loom with. The dressing of the loom can take several days if it is a complicated weave or a large cloth that is being threaded. When the loom

is dressed and tuned, the weaving can begin. Viv said all the pieces she creates are special and there aren’t really any favourites. For many years, the primary material Viv wove with was wool, often unspun. She now also uses other fibres such as cotton, linen and silk. Exploring paper and book-making is one of her new ventures. A gallery to display and sell her work, and that of other textile practitioners, has been built on the property.

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES

So much at stake

by Lockwood Smith

For the first time in my life, I’m actually frightened of my country’s government. For someone who spent 29 years in parliament, and a minister for almost a decade, that may sound a bit odd, but I am. It’s scary when a government chooses heavy handed-regulation when cost/benefit analyses aren’t robust, where implementation has been given scant consideration, and where the government just doesn’t have the experience to understand the risks around perverse outcomes. The banning of offshore hydrocarbon exploration in 2018 was one example. While reducing fossil fuel use makes good sense, hydrocarbons are used for a myriad of other purposes in our modern economy. More focus on banning fossil fuel subsidies globally, could have done more good, but, of course, it wouldn’t look so bold.

If it was just that one decision, it might not be so frightening. However, the recent Action for Healthy Waterways regulations makes it clear that this government is more focussed on being seen to act, rather than doing what is really effective. Again, no one denies the need to improve the health of our waterways. However, it’s how it’s done that’s so important. While this government is clever at politics, it’s demonstrated repeatedly its inability to implement policy effectively. The freshwater decisions not only ride roughshod over property rights that have underpinned economic success in western democracies for generations,

but they’re so impractical that they’d be laughable if the costs of implementing them weren’t so serious. These regulations would make the EU proud, but they’re not the New Zealand way. Our approach is spelt out in the CPTTP Trade Agreement in the chapter on good regulatory practice — that is

outcome focussed and based on sound risk management. We wrote it, but have then ignored it. Our government has chosen instead to dictate what you can do on your land. For example, I farm beef cows in a dairying area, but these regulations would prevent me from milking cows on

my land like my neighbours. I couldn’t even sell land to a dairy farming neighbour without a resource consent, which would be impossible to get. Somehow, I’ll also have to get a resource consent for my sheltered sawdust pad that I’ve used for 20 years to calve my cows. It’s a valuable animal welfare asset, enabling them to calve in warmer, drier conditions. However, now, no drain will be allowed within 50 metres — with Northland’s rainfall! Not sure, either, how I’ll measure the minimum surface permeability requirement of 10 to the minus 9 metres a second. I doubt whoever wrote this stuff has ever been near a farm. Little wonder some farmers are threatening to ignore the whole ridiculous mess. Moreover, threats from ministers won’t make their deeply flawed regulations any more workable. The frightening list goes on. How agriculture’s biological emissions are to be brought into New Zealand’s carbon emissions reduction programme is also critically important.

If the government decides He Waka Eke Noa has made insufficient progress and brings agriculture into the existing Emissions Trading Scheme, the consequences could be dire. The way the legislation is currently framed, it risks failing to reduce carbon emissions for each kilogram of agricultural product at all. Instead, it would just make New Zealand agriculture less competitive globally, and see higher global emissions from less carbonefficient food produced elsewhere. Ruminant methane emissions are more significant in New Zealand than any other developed economy. Yet the government sticks to a flawed accounting system shown by the IPCC’s leading scientist in this area, Prof Miles Allen, a physicist at Oxford, to seriously overestimate the global warming potential of methane. An irrational government is frightening. They keep repeating the mantra that New Zealand has one of the higher carbon emissions profiles per capita of any country. The paradox is

that if our economy was based on the export of oil, rather than food, we’d have one of the lowest. You see, oil emissions are accounted for in the country that consumes it, while food emissions are accounted for in the country that produces it. To add to their scrambled thinking, they allow fossil fuel emissions to be offset by blanketing good hill country farmland in pines. The environmental catastrophe of silt and slash that destroy our waterways at plantation harvesting are an affront to those who love and care for our land. Ministers in significant portfolios,

September 2020

to do their job properly, have to work extraordinary hours. They are paid good money to do it. It means they should be right across the detail of how their policies will be implemented. Relying on officials isn’t good enough. They rarely have the practical experience needed. Anyone attending freshwater consultation meetings last year could see that. It’s why we have ministers in a democracy. They are meant to have the knowledge, experience in the wider world brings. For farming right now, there’s so much at stake.

Early detection the best protection New statistics revealed by the Prostate Cancer Foundation show that almost 300 fewer men were diagnosed in March and April this year, due to New Zealand’s lockdown, when compared to the same period last year.

Early prostate testing is a priority for rural men just as it is for those in urban areas because this deadly cancer often has no symptoms, and the PSA blood test is the crucial first indicator. In his role as medical adviser to PCFNZ, urologist Jim Duthie aims to reduce the number of men suffering from prostate cancer by expanding good testing throughout the country and encouraging early checks. “Guys don’t see enough doctors,” Jim says bluntly. “So, when they do, it’s important they make the most of that appointment.” Tackling a cancer that kills more than 600 Kiwi men each year is no small feat. According to Health Navigator NZ, men who live in rural areas are at

greater risk than those who live in urban areas because they have less access to health services. The research also points to rural men having lower rates of screening than their urban counterparts. Blue September is the Prostate Cancer Foundation New Zealand’s National Prostate Cancer Awareness month. The foundation is asking New Zealanders to hold a Blue Do to raise awareness and funds to join the fight against the disease. It has never been more imperative for Kiwis to ‘go blue’ this Blue September to join the fight and raise funds for the special men in our lives — our mates, fathers, brothers, uncles and grandfathers. The importance of coenzyme Q10

(Part three)

I recently wrote about coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and I was surprised at the amount of contact from readers on the subject. Especially from those wanting help dealing with the side effects of cholesterol-lowering medication. Studies show that statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 by as much as 50%. The side effects are so common they are called ‘statin myopathy’. The main side effects are muscle and tendon weakness, which can be felt as muscle stiffness and pain. The effect on nerves can impact memory and mood, and there’s comment about general lethargy. In most cases, two months of a quality CoQ10 will reduce these side effects and allow people to get the benefits of the medication without side effects. The chemical structure of CoQ10 allows it to move high energy electrons within our cell mitochondria where energy is made. CoQ10 collects these electrons and transfers them to an enzyme called ATP synthase to make the energy we need. I prescribe CoQ10 for several reasons most commonly for statin support. I also add CoQ10 for those fatigued without medical causes and for those with cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative

problems. For example, I include at least 100mg for those with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and higher doses for those with MS. For statins support, I use a highquality patented US CoQ10 and for inflammatory problems, my mitochondrial support formula, that includes high-grade Kaneka CoQ10 with a number of energy cofactors. It is interesting that the first improvement felt by those with these conditions is a lift in energy and general wellbeing. Those with inflammator y conditions, especially autoimmune problems, should be working to a personalised diet and supplement plan complementary to their regular medical treatment. Most people feel a real difference within three months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. NEW PLYMOUTH

Green gem at the heart of the city by Andy Bryenton

On a brisk autumn morning in 1876, four trees were planted atop a little hill near the settlement of New Plymouth, with the spade wielded by the daughter of the town’s famous first surveyor. It was to be the foundation for Pukekura Park, the so-called ‘jewel in New Plymouth’s crown’, and a labour of botanical love that has come to fruition during one and a half centuries. The whole idea came from the mind of a local lawyer, who was convinced that the settlement deserved green spaces like those of London. Robert Hughes used his powers of oratory and persuasion to convince the Taranaki council to purchase what was described as ‘wasteland’ near New Plymouth as a recreational area. Many minds then, as now, were fixed on summer cricket and winter football! Opening day was planned for May 29, when a crowd of citizens gathered to witness the turning of the soil and the planting of those four symbolic trees by Miss Jane Carrington, the daughter of Frederick Alonzo Carrington, known as the ‘father of New Plymouth’ due to his surveying work. The four species chosen were an oak, a puriri, a Norfolk pine and a Pinus radiata, representing England, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and America respectively. This nod to future trade and commerce was just one of the ways that the park, named Pukekura in 1907 for the stream, which was dammed to make its ornamental lake, was forward-thinking. Part of the allure of the modern gardens is the sheer variety of specimen trees and different biomes on display,

from ferns to native trees to exotic examples not usually found in these latitudes. Another is the distinctive colonial-era architecture of structures like the band rotunda or the gardens’ iconic tea house, itself a wedding anniversary present from the former mayor and ‘first lady’, Mr and Mrs Burgess, back in 1931. Of special note is the poet’s bridge, from which stunningly framed views of the lake and gardens can be seen. While the name would suggest a connection with the writers of the Victorian era, it’s actually a monument to a bit of generosity and good luck. Park benefactor, JT Davis drew a racehorse named The Poet in a

sweepstake in 1883, and when his horse came in first, he won the sum of £150, a large windfall at the time. That was the capital needed to build the bridge, which was given its name as a reference to Davis’ good fortune. The original structure was replaced with a Japanese-style red lacquered bridge in the late 1930s.

Residents encouraged to voice views The New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) is asking residents whether enough is being done to respond to the climate challenge and other issues. Questions are being put to residents as part of the NPDC’s Top 10 Korero. More than 10 weeks, 10 online surveys will be open for feedback, covering 10 different topics. Water, zero-waste and climate change are amongst those up for discussion. Residents are encouraged to complete as many weekly topics as they wish. The Top 10 Korero will look at the big issues facing the district, ahead of planning how $2 billion of public funds is spent in the next 10-year plan. Councillor Amanda Clinton-Gohdes said a huge amount of work has already started on how NPDC can cut emissions across all parts of the council. It follows the mayor and councillors’ commitment to an urgent response to climate change last year. “Our Climate Action Framework looks at how we can cut emissions and adapt our planning and infrastructure to the changes in weather and sea level. How, as a council and a community, we prepare for the challenges ahead. “We already have a string of initiatives to help ensure our transition to a sustainable future. Behind the scenes, we are investigating how to better manage our transport and

water networks, and encouraging inner-city living and development. “More visibly, we are investing in the Zero Waste 2040 goal, stepping up planting on NPDC land and trialling electric vehicles, including rubbish trucks. These changes go right to the grassroots of what we do — even to getting rechargeable power mowers and tools for our parks staff.” Councillor Richard Handley said while the focus on the next 10-year plan looks at investment in the district from 2021 to 2031, NPDC’s Councillor Amanda Clinton-Gohdes said a huge amount of work has started on how NPDC can cut emissions commitment to a meaningful climate change response is long-term. CROP & PASTURE PREP Farming really is rocket science by Andy Bryenton

In 2018, an ambitious new plan carried out in partnership between the United States Government and private company SpaceX saw the first of a new generation of GPS satellites headed for orbit. The latest flew from Cape Canaveral Space Centre in June, with more to come. However, why is this news for a farming publication? The existing network of only 31 civilianaccessible GPS satellites has changed the concept of ‘isolation’ forever, making it hard to truly get lost. It’s also had a profound effect on farming, as it’s now possible to accurately guide machinery and vehicle operations from space. Imagine playing chess from down among the pieces; it would be hard to see the whole board. That’s what it was like to try and plan a fertiliser application strategy before GPS and satellite imagery gave us an alien’s eye view from low orbit. Improved GPS, with more satellites able to accurately measure down into the millimetre range, means better control for activities such as harvesting, pasture prep, seed drilling, and of course, fertiliser placement. When you consider that New Zealand’s leading GPS guided fert placement system, TracMap, is responsible for close to three-quarters of all fertiliser application strategies, you can see where even a small increase in operational efficiency and accuracy could make a huge difference. GPS III, as the new system is called, may still be under

CROP & PASTURE PREP The engine room of spring growth by Andy Bryenton

BRUSHWEED, CROP AND PASTURE SPRAYING

For all your gun and boom spraying needs Call Simon on 027 450 8320 REGISTERED CHEMICAL APPLICATOR

With the days getting longer and spring officially on the calendar, things are changing all around us in nature. The obvious signs, like blooming daffodils, are one thing, but a more profound change is occurring under our feet, as the entire underground biome shifts from winter to summer mode. Human agriculture has taken note of these changes since ancient times. Still, it’s only in more recent decades that we’ve really begun to understand the science which dictates life under the soil of farmers’ paddocks. This knowledge has led to advancements in how best to aerate the soil, how best to promote healthy growth for new crops, and even how to plant seed for optimum performance. Some of this work in creating new understanding comes from soil scientists patiently sampling cores

KEEP TRACK OF WHERE YOU’VE BEEN

of earth each season to measure chemicals, nutrient levels and the activity of fungi and bacteria. Other information is increasingly fed into our soil and pasture model from space, as satellites join in the task of helping provide robust agriculture for a growing and hungry population. Of course, some of the basics, such as the need to plough and turn the soil, and the importance of using crop rotation to fix nitrogen, have been known about since the Middle Ages. The three-field system, developed in those long-ago times, was discovered by monks who didn’t have the right words to explain why it was better. They may well have gleaned information from very old texts in Greek, from the time of ancient Egypt and Babylon. The adoption of the three-field system, with its emphasis on healthy soil, increased food production is said to be a driving force behind the

Renaissance, when trade, and hence learning flourished. This is all good news, but of little concern today to the farmer thinking about modern crop choices, seed placement and soil harrowing, most of which is now accomplished by machine. The key, however, remains the same as it was back in the days of those early monks. When the microbiome in the soil begins to switch from its winter mode to its more active spring and summer phase, it’s time to be out there working. Inclement weather is sure to blow over soon as we pass the equinox and head into summer. So thinking ahead to consult with soil science experts and the contractors who wield today’s powerful harrows and seed drills is smart business. In short, it’s time to take care of your soil, so it, in turn, will take care of you through what may be a long hot summer.

CROP & PASTURE PREP Insight into fieldwork’s future by Andy Bryenton

The engineers at CNH Industrial were looking to the future ahead of 2019’s European Agritechnica, and what they came up with is a reflection of a trend, which has changed passenger vehicles and inner cities, but has yet to make a huge impact on the farm. Their Steyr hybrid concept treats power in a whole new fashion, delivering a look into tomorrow. As far as design studies go, this is no mere clay model with nothing under the hood. Steyr, a company in the same stable as industry giants Case IH and New Holland, has delivered a machine, which combines a diesel power plant with several electric motors, as well as the facility to send voltage to electrically powered or controlled implements. In their own words: “What requirements will a tractor have to meet in future? We asked ourselves this very question before developing the Steyr Concept. This concept combines innovative technologies in a hitherto unique way to create an environmentally friendly, yet efficient and, above all, functional tractor concept. At the heart of the system lies a modular hybrid electric drive, comprising a combustion engine, a generator, and several electric motors. The selection of these components creates a compact vehicle design.” That, and much more. Under the futuristic skin, the big red and white machine has a diesel-electric hybrid drive train like those used in military subs. A four-cylinder 204 horsepower

engine is mated to an electric generator, feeding a battery bank and sending voltage to four independent electric wheel motors, and a fifth motor that drives the PTO system. As one could imagine, this allows for infinitely variable torque vectoring to grip in even the worst conditions, as well as impressive transit performance on the road. The new Steyr is also set up to power electrically-driven implements, a new breed which is starting to emerge from the manufacturers of Europe. Hence a set of 48V or 700V connections ready to interface with these new, more highly monitored devices. Unsurprisingly, the comfortable cab is also set up with interface points for the latest in satellite navigation and even boasts the ability to link with a drone, allowing for a vast range of vision and more field data on hand. Like a concept car, the Steyr may not reach the field in this exact trim. However, it’s a look at where new Steyr, New Holland and Case IH machines may be headed in the not too distant future.

Steyr proves a show stopper — the big concept hybrid was centre stage at Agritechnica and points the way forward for tractor tech

CROP & PASTURE PREP The ‘big guns’ of spring farming by Andy Bryenton

Farming practices developed and refined here in New Zealand make our arable land some of the most productive in the world. It’s the management of this land, whether for crop or pasture, which drives the engines of the economy. This season, you’ll see plenty of big machines out there in the fields doing their bit, bringing together more than 1,800 years of inventions. To get oxygen deep into the soil and help promote the healthy biome underground, you’ll see powerful tractors drawing tine harrows through the earth. This method was, of course, once horsedrawn, and the earliest picture of it is in the background of the Bayeux Tapestry, from 1066. William the Conqueror put images of his farmers on the famous tapestry next to his knights and soldiers because it was efficient agriculture that allowed medieval armies to march; grain was the wealth of ancient kingdoms. Next, you may notice disc harrows breaking up the soil and preparing for fresh seeding. They chop residue, break up clumps and promote aeration. This kind of machine was also developed for horsepower, but the advent of hydraulics

has increased their size, portability and capabilities in breaking up soil. Hydraulics play a big part in many of the machines, allowing for massive strength. The hydraulic principle has been known since ancient times but was perfected into a modern form by William Armstrong. He developed the giant hydraulics for Tower Bridge in London. Nowadays, the mobile trucks of hydraulic repair experts are a force which keeps farming moving during this busy season. Another motive power behind spring farming comes from Rudolf diesel, with the compression engine that bears his name. The idea of mating this up with a high-traction machine to pull farming implements goes to John Froelich of the

GB

ONTRACTING

ROUND BALING AND BULK SILAGE Proudly servicing the South Taranaki

Thanks to our local engineers and mechanics, a whole fleet of pasture and soil prep machines can work hard all spring

United States. Why is his name not on more modern machines? Apparently, Froelich was ahead of his time and was told that his tractor would never replace steam traction engines. He patented the idea in 1890, but by 1895 he was out of business and turned to invent other farming implements. A duo named Hart and Parr revisited the concept in 1903 when fuel was cheaper and coal more expensive; their #3 engine is on display in the

Smithsonian. We can only imagine what Froelich had to say about that! The final big machine that combines all of these principles is the seed drill, a modification of an idea 1,800 years old from China. There, seeds were poked into the soil using a hollow bamboo tube. Agriculture policy denies basic science

23

by Robin Grieve — FARM spokesman

The Green Party’s agriculture policy is based on a mistaken understanding about the environmental impact of livestock farming. James Shaw attempted to justify his party’s policy to price livestock emissions on his belief that livestock produces half of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. The science and the facts about ruminant methane emissions do not support that. FARM was set up to present the facts about ruminant methane. The Green Party policy demonstrates how much the facts and the science of ruminant methane emissions are missing from the political debate about global warming. Using the discredited and nonscientific CO2 equivalent system to quantify ruminant emissions, as the Green Party has done, is to misrepresent the environmental impact of livestock farming. Any pricing scheme that is introduced for these emissions will be a financial fraud by the government on New Zealand’s farmers. There is nothing more than dishonest to quantify emissions of ruminant methane using a system that does not take into account the fact that ruminant methane emissions do not accumulate in the atmosphere in the way the system assumes they do. The system is not fit for purpose and should not be used. The Ministry for the Environment states clearly that emissions of ruminant methane do not need to decrease at

all to stop global warming. That means current ruminant methane emissions are not causing global warming, do not need to be reduced and should not be priced under any circumstances. FARM urges all political parties to listen to the science about livestock emissions of methane when developing

their policies and not stick doggedly to false beliefs based on the failed CO2 equivalent system just because it suits their anti-farming ideology. New Zealand farmers have had enough of the lies and the unfair and unwarranted demonisation by our politicians.

Plantain as pasture type New Zealand farmers can now assess the potential impact and investment of plantain, using OverseerFM. Plantain varieties have been used on New Zealand farms for some time, with positive effects on milk production and in reducing nitrate leaching. Following the comprehensive research programme Forages for Reduced Nitrate Leaching (FRNL), plantain has been included in OverseerFM as a pasture type on pastoral and cut and carry blocks. “For the first time, farmers considering sowing plantain can compare estimates of their farm’s nitrogen losses before investing time and money.

Also, those who already use plantain can have it recognised in their farm plans,” says chief executive of Overseer Limited, Dr Caroline Read. “There has been a lot of interest in exploring the impact of adding plantain to farm systems or including it in compliance reporting.” Plantain offers significant potential benefits. Depending on the proportion of plantain in the animal’s diet, less excreted nitrogen ends up in urine and urine volume increases, resulting in urine patches with less nitrogen, which

is better for the environment. How large the environmental effect is, depends on the farm’s situation, such as the scale of plantain use, amount of supplementary feed used, soil type and climate. The FRNL programme was led by DairyNZ and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and research partners DairyNZ, AgResearch, Plant & Food Research, Lincoln University, Foundation for Arable Research and Manaaki WhenuaLandcare Research. First, FRNL assessed the impact of Ceres Tonic plantain and other forages

and identified that plantain reduces nitrogen leached. Overseer has spent the last year working with AgResearch scientists to translate the FRNL findings into OverseerFM. “Including plantain in Overseer ensures farmers can have the good work they are doing acknowledged as part of compliance processes,” said DairyNZ senior scientist and FRNL programme lead, Dr Ina Pinxterhuis. “Further research is planned to better understand the effects of plantain on nitrogen processes in the soil.”

DAIRY WITH EFFLUENT FOCUS ADVERTORIAL

Enviroline’s new owners Jason and Roz Harrison are the new owners of Enviroline, supplying quality linings for a variety of ponds including effluent and decorative. “We wanted our own business as we have a young family. The decision came earlier than expected when I was made redundant from my last job,” says Jason. “We took ownership of Enviroline on the first of July and look forward to building ongoing relationships. Roz and I have been around farms our whole life. Roz was born on a dairy farm in Pirongia before moving to beef and sheep operations and also worked on horse studs. “I am Te Awamutu-born and bred. My dad is a vet, and we understand the needs of the farming community. I have predominantly worked in the agriculture/veterinarian industry and have spent the most part of the last 20 years dealing with dairy farmers. “Enviroline is the lining for the HPE liner. The majority of our business is in dairy effluent ponds. We are getting into the commercial sector including stormwater ponds for subdivisions and catchment ponds for industrial sites. We also line decorative ponds for lifestyle block holders and farmers. We are happy to get involved at any stage of THE ORIGINAL FLEXIBLE BLADDER

a project and help design the pond as well through our contacts. You need to take into account the soil type, the number of cows if it is an effluent pond, and the annual rainfall for a pond to be built correctly. “Ponds need to be constructed with the right material and lined the correct way. You need leak protection, and there are a number of technical issues to consider. It’s not like the old days where you just dug a hole and put a pipe in. “There are three layers to the lining, and it is important to understand what the end product will look like. “The earlier we are involved, the better as it also dramatically reduces potential delays. “It is good to have everyone, such as the earthworks guys around the table

from day one to discuss the process. That is better than discovering you can’t line a pond because of this issue or that issue. “I believe we have a high-quality product. There is always a cheap option, but cheap is not best. We have the backing of the supplier, can provide a 20-year liner warranty and an eight-year workmanship guarantee. “Your effluent pond is literally going to be filled with effluent. We are a small business, and I am on-site for each job and can deal with issues immediately. We believe in fair pricing and quality workmanship with adaptability. “If you are looking for quality workmanship, superior liners, successful effluent containment at realistic prices, call the team at Enviroline NZ to discuss how we can help you.”

Vivid memoir takes flight

27

by Andy Bryenton

If you’re reading this publication, it’s a fair bet that you enjoy a true tale of Kiwi farming adventures. Through the years we’ve brought you a fair few, but none, perhaps, with the scope of the life story of the ‘flying farmer’, Bruce Galloway. In his recently published memoir, Bruce lays out a life full of rural adventures, on horseback, motorcycle, tractor, truck, and ultimately in the air. As befits his nickname, Bruce has plenty of stories to tell about traversing the rural countryside on wings. He’s survived some hair-raising scrapes in the process, including the devastating crash of his Cessna 182. Here you’ll find a colloquial chronology from childhood through to adult life, spanning 11 farms and an enormous cast of colourful family and friends as characters. Reading through this volume is like talking to an old mate over a few cold pints; informal, humorous and sometimes touchingly nostalgic, but with a core of irreverent Kiwi good cheer. The photos, which bracket the text, seem taken right from a family photo album, and likely were. Fans of early Barry Crump will hear some echoes here, if only in the way that each adventure is neatly encapsulated and laid out in simple terms with a clear and warm ‘voice’. People who religiously tune into Country Calendar will find an equivalent here in text which paints a picture as vivid

as any video. Those who have worked the land in New Zealand in the post-war years will certainly find some resonance with the ‘flying farmer’ and his tale of trials, triumphs, family and farming spanning everything from shearing to kiwifruit and, of course, cattle. ‘The best memoirs are told without the need to self-aggrandise, and seek to entertain on the surface while educating with little truths between the words’. That was the opinion of the publishers of Theodore Roosevelt’s autobiography, and it’s as true today as it was when that tome was written. The Flying Farmer may not tackle matters of state, but its warm and downto-earth tone, and real-life quality makes it a proper page-turner. Broken up into short anecdotes and reminiscences; it’s easy to get lost in Mr Galloway’s writing and realise that the hands of the clock have slipped a fair way along. To say too much more of the content of this memoir would spoil the surprises. However, suffice to say, that it’s a tremendous achievement to have committed so much memory to paper, and a tremendous read for those who are fortunate enough to leaf through a copy.

REMARKABLE RECOLLECTIONS ...a book you won’t put down! Bruce Galloway looks back at a series of adventures, scrapes, achievements, anecdotes and escapades which span a lifetime of Kiwi farming, 11 farms and the view from a tractor, truck and aeroplane! Bruce, the ‘flying farmer’ recounts the funny, touching, nostalgic and exciting times from a remarkable life in a way that will keep you turning pages til the small hours.
