New haymaker a real knockout
Baling hay has been a big part of farming since before the era of diesel tractors …
This year has been a globetrotting one for the karting youngster with two successful campaigns in the United States and Italy already under his belt. Following his winning performance at the New Zealand Kart Sprint Championships in Invercargill earlier this year, Jacob won the right to represent New Zealand at the Rok International Finals in South Garda, Italy in October, and he did so with style. After eight days of solid testing Jacob posted a time good enough to put him
8th fastest over the 165 drivers from 48 countries. After the heats he had done enough to place him 15th on the grid for the Vortex International Final but mechanical problems plagued his final race. Before the youngster had even arrived in Italy he was invited by Aluminos Racing USA to take part in the annual Streets of Lancaster street race in California. Jacob had never raced a street race before but qualified 14th on the grid. During the race he moved his way
through the field into 9th position before he was caught up in a huge crash which saw him flip his race machine and he was thrown from his seat. The final saw him starting off the back of the grid, but with skill and determination he drove through the pack to finish the final in 9th overall. Returning to New Zealand Jacob only had two days to recover before he had to travel to Nelson to contest the South Island Karting Championship. continued on page 3 …

The Selwyn District Council is advising all households on this supply to boil their water for drinking or personal use. A council spokesperson said a mains power outage disrupted the UV treatment system on the supply. “A boil water notice has been issued by council after test results were received showing that E. coli levels were above recommended levels. “E. coli was detected in the postUV area of water treatment, however no E. coli has been detected in the reticulation zone. “The scheme is currently being chlorinated but residents are advised to continue boiling water until further notice. “People will need to continue to boil water until they are notified that the boil water notice is lifted. If people show any symptoms of sickness they should visit their doctor as soon as you are able to.” When a boil water notice is in place, the Ministry of Health advises that people should boil or treat all water from taps before drinking, brushing teeth or using it in food preparation. In addition, water used to make ice should also be

Earthquake tweet research New Lincoln University research will be using Twitter to gauge the emotions of earthquake struck Selwyn and other Canterbury residents with the aim of helping distressed people. Prerita Gupta, a PhD student at the Complex Systems, Big Data and Informatics Initiative (CSBII) at Lincoln University, said people experiencing upheavals like the Canterbur y earthquakes often turn to social media to express their feelings, especially Twitter. She is in development of an emotion recognition algorithm to identify emotions based on tweets from 2010 to 2016 using keywords which identify those related to Christchurch’s major earthquakes and has collected more than 250,000 tweets to date. Ms Gupta said the tweets gauge people’s intense reactions after the events and how they are coping. “People have moved from the traditional way of expressing their feelings face-to-face to venting their feelings through social media as a coping mechanism, probably because they feel more comfortable sharing their feelings online,” she said. “Traditional approaches such as interviews or surveys are not the best way to collect data as most people do not want to be reminded of the experience, as it may traumatise them further.” She said a better way to get the information is through non-intrusive ways such as text mining approaches
p Lincoln University PhD student Prerita Gupta is studying tweets sent during the Canterbury earthquakes to help determine the best response to people in need
such as Sentiment Analysis and Emotion Identification. “The work should have public health benefits, giving a new way to gauge emotional states. “This information is very useful for health providers in examining the relationship between emotions and the use of anti-depressant medicines, helpful for the government to plan which affected area needs the maximum health benefit, and for social welfare departments to understand the level of support they should provide to the affected party.” ¢

The Selwyn Responsible Business Awards, run by the Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET), were held at an awards evening at the Rolleston Community Lounge recently. In previous year’s the awards have been conducted in different areas of Selwyn but for the first time businesses from the whole district came together to receive recognition for the sustainable and community initiatives many of them are implementing. LET project manager Dave Fitzjohn said it was clearly recognised on the night that all participants were winners. “It was a true celebration of the wonderful things that Selwyn businesses are doing alongside providing us with our goods and services, and we would like to congratulate all of them. “The assessors detailed numerous initiatives that our businesses are undertaking. Many schools have waste free lunch boxes, some enterprises are re-using water, while others have ‘fill your own bottle or container’ schemes, and native tree planting is becoming a common feature. “ Mr Fitzjohn said the awards evening was greatly enhanced by two excellent presentations from James McDonald from Yealands Wineries, who gave an insight into the steps they have taken to become a sustainable enterprise which wins worldwide awards, and Martin and Lisa Bennett from the Laboratory Lincoln, who reused materials from buildings condemned by the Canterbury

THE RECORD
Feedback on new library wanted The Selwyn District Council wants to get input from local residents into the development of a $16 million library and community centre for Rolleston. Development of the new 2,200 square metre multi-use facility is set to start in 2018, with completion the following year. Council made provision of $16.2 million for the project in its 2015-2025 Long-Term Plan and the facility will be funded from existing libraries cash reserves, dividends from council’s Izone business activity and the library targeted rate. The existing Rolleston library was opened in 2000 when the town’s population was just 2,000 people, compared to more than 15,000 today. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the new facility was a key project in the Rolleston town centre development. “The new facility will replace the existing Rolleston library, which is now too small for Rolleston’s growing population, but will also provide a flexible, multi-use space for a wide range of community purposes,” Mayor Broughton said. “Council wants residents to look into the future and think about what a future community space and library might be like, and how they would use it. “Community spaces and libraries are changing and we want our new
facility to be an exciting place for learning, sharing ideas, culture and exploration. “It will offer flexible multi-purpose spaces for all sorts of activities and events, performances, learning programmes, and arts and culture. We want it to be a place where our community comes together to meet, reflect and be entertained.” He said council is providing opportunities for people to share their ideas and comments throughout November, through online surveys, social media and at some community events, as well as through Selwyn District Libraries. “Ideas generated from community feedback will be used by the design team to guide the design so that it meets the needs of Selwyn residents now and in the future. “Initial design concepts for the library and community centre will be developed during the first half of 2018, and residents will have further opportunities to comment on options as the project develops.” The new library and community centre is a key project in the Rolleston town centre master plan, which was adopted

Leeston-Southbridge has maintained their unbeaten record in the CRV Ambreed Country Premier One Day cricket competition after clinically dispatching defending champions Sefton on Saturday. Cheviot, Darfield-South Malvern, and Weedons also picked up wins as all four chasing teams prevailed in the latest round of the premiership. At Sefton Domain, LeestonSouthbridge won the toss and chose to bowl. The home side started well putting on 83 runs for the first wicket before ex-Nelson Hawke Cup bowler Tim Field made the first breakthrough. Sefton then lost wickets at regular intervals, with Lance Taylor top-scoring with 53, as they struggled to be all out for 132 in the 45th over. Field ended with the tidy figures of 3/25 and all-rounder Liam O’Sullivan bowled well to also be rewarded with three wickets. In reply, Leeston-Southbridge lost their openers early. Batting at number three, ex-Dutch international Tim Gruijters compiled a good partnership with former Canterbury hockey representative Matt Ling to get their side through to the total in the 41st over. Cheviot continued its enjoyable return to the premiership after destroying Southbrook on Saturday. Southbrook capitulated to be all out for 68 in 26 overs with Pete Rayner taking six wickets. Cheviot made short work of the tiny total, knocking it off in the 14th over, elevating them to second on the table behind Leeston-Southbridge. Darfield-South Malvern (DSM) picked up its first win of the season at Darfield Domain over Oxford-Rangiora. The visitors made 174 all out, after being 109/2, with Andre Mitchell the pick of the batsmen, making 46 off 81 balls. DSM batted well in reply to secure their first win, with Sean Carston and Simon Edwards steering their side home to a comfortable eight-wicket win. At Lincoln Domain, the home side struggled batting first against Ellesmere rivals Weedons.

Games a hit once again u by Kent Caddick
Over 10,000 people got their taste of Scotland at the Hororata Domain on the weekend with the running of the 7th annual Hororata Highland Games. As well as enjoying the entertainment, stalls and carnival rides the crowd was treated to some intense competition with over 100 highland dancers taking to the stage making it officially the biggest one day competition in New Zealand. In addition 12 pipe bands, 58 solo pipers and drummers, 18 wool spinners, 140 tug-of-war exponents, 68 junior warriors, 6 shooters and 20 heavy athletes fought it out for the prizes in their competitions. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said the weather was moody in the morning, keeping to the Scottish theme with a short period of rain. “However, right on queue at 11 am as the crowd stilled for an Armistice Day remembrance, the clouds parted and the sun shone through.” The Malvern Schools combined Kapa Haka group then welcomed Chieftain Amy Adams with a stirring performance. Ms Adams spoke of how she has attended every Hororata Highland Games since its inception. She said it was an event she really looked forward to because of the community spirit involved in making it happen.
“This amazing community pulled together and rebuilt after the lifechanging earthquakes, and right from the start, the games have been spectacular.” The Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship was won by New Zealander, Jono MacFarlane who also broke a field record tossing the 56lb weight over a 15.5 foot bar. Ashburton’s Craig Manson came second in his first time in this division, while Australian Scott Martin was third. The women’s Gough CAT Amateur Championship was won by Kiwi Julie Stechman and the men’s title was taken out by David Jackways, also from New Zealand. The festival surrounding the competitions was packed with entertainment while thousands of people took on the ‘Have A Go’ challenges. “All this simply would not be possible without the over 200 volunteers, competitors, partners, stall holders, suppliers, and of course the visitors,” Mrs Driscoll said. “The Hororata Community Trust thanks everyone who makes our games truly special.” ¢

Spoiled for choice in sizzle season by Andy Bryenton
The barbecue used to be a simple thing. Back in the past this method of cooking got its name from pirates who, unable to muster up a chef’s skills, simply dragged the iron grille from their ship’s gunpowder hold, set it up over a fire and threw freshcaught slices of wild pork on top. But now the art of the true barbecue is making its presence felt. Through the television and internet we’re graced with visions of the true pitmasters of this culinary way of life, and tastes are changing. Say that you’re planning a summer barbie today and people will be asking about your plans for a dry rub for that brisket, or your secrets to perfect slow cooked pulled pork. This means making a fundamental choice before the summer season really hits. It’s time to assess the grill itself, and see what kind of cooking you’re going to indulge your friends and family with. Choosing a classic charcoal kettle marks you out as a purist, and is sure to deliver a real old-fashioned flavour. There’s a lot more can be achieved with this classic design than many people
realise, and it all comes down to a careful use of charcoal to deliver slow and even heat. A gas grill has been the front runner for many households for the past decade or more, and is also a versatile outdoor kitchen thanks to its lack of actual coal or wood chips. Definitely a must for the boat, a gas grill may not be able to provide that smokey flavour all on its own, but quick and even heat mean that it’s a great platform for cooking all kinds of different fare, from seafood to steaks and even, with the fitment of the right accessories, a mean rotisserie. The outdoor cooking setup of the moment, however, features an offset firebox in the style of barbecues in the American southwest. This method allows a fire to be kindled in a separate

No matter how you grill, the key to a great result is to choose the best cuts of meat, to prep with marinades and rubs for flavour well in advance, and to be patient. Good things take time when it comes to the new, slow-cooked trend in barbecue, but the taste is well worth the wait. ¢

For the master of the backyard kitchen, there are barbecues which combine three or more of these functions - offset firebox, gas grill and charcoal, or gas, charcoal and a rotisserie.

Calling in on the country
LIFESTYLE BLOCK MOBILE SHEARING
by Andy Bryenton
NO JOB TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL
-shearing
So, you’ve managed to become the one relative in the entire extended clan who happens to run a successful farm, or who has retreated from the big city to enjoy the lifestyle block ‘good life’. The rural idyll — complete with lots of hard work, of course — looks pretty appealing to suburban siblings as the holidays roll around, and your position amidst the green hills or near the coast suddenly becomes a magnet for family and friends. If you’re generous and game enough to play host to all those cousins, aunties, uncles, kids and grandkids (not to mention old university mates, work buddies and sports’ team acquaintances) who ‘were just in the area’ over Christmas and New Years, then we salute you. But there are a few things to know which will make preparing for the coming ‘tent city’ that little bit easier. First, tell them what to expect. A holiday in the country is not the RitzCarlton, and that’s a big part of its appeal. Be straight up and honest about the need for your rellys to bring plenty of insect repellent, and all the gear to keep their little camp site self sufficient. Running countless cables from the barn, house and garage for fridges, xboxes, televisions and hair straighteners isn’t really camping, is it? If you’re playing host while summer farming chores are still ongoing, it’s also good to gently remind the folks that the concept of a ‘holiday’ is a bit blurry in the agricultural sector.
And that a farm comes with hazards for the unwary. That being said, there’s something great about helping teach the young ones just where their breakfast eggs and milk come from. The hard part of hosting your family and friends out in the country is not becoming like John Cleese’s mad hotelier Basil Fawlty. There’s such a thing as being a gracious host, but don’t try to be a

The ideal soil is what you have got, once corrected and balanced, because that’s what you have got. A textbook soil, is composed of 45% minerals, 5% humus, 25% water and 25% air. How do you achieve this? The Albrecht system of soil fertility achieves this by a balanced mineral application determined by a soil audit for each particular soil. It’s the chemical makeup of that soil which determines the physical structure and the correct physical structure provides an environment for the biology. It’s the biology that provides the foundation for soil health by having adequate mineral nutrition, in a form, readily available to plants, supplied by an active soil microbial community. It’s the biology that builds the soil aggregate and makes the organic matter that regulates the chemistry. The key to plant production and the key concept to grasp is, when we provide a plant with greater levels of nutrition, the performance of these plants is greatly increased. Photosynthesis — (making life from light.) by absorbing water from the soil, CO2 from the air and through an anabolic process with sunlight energy, forms carbohydrates (sugars) inside the leaves of green plants. The Australian soil ecologist Dr Christine Jones termed this the liquid carbon pathway. Liquid carbon is basically dissolved sugars. Sugars are formed in plant chloroplasts during
photosynthesis. Some of the sugars are used for growth and some are exuded into soil by plant roots to support the microbes involved in nutrient acquisition. This microbial support is also required to improve soil structure, increase macro and micronutrient availabilities and enhance soil water holding capacity. Anything we can do to increase the plant’s photosynthesis capacity will increase the plant’s energy. Photosynthetic capacity is derived relative to (A) balanced mineral nutrition, (B) the micro-biology content, in the soil. Nitrogen fixation depends on energy efficiency. It takes a lot of energy, and requires a lot of sugars from photosynthesis and minerals, which means tuning the entire system by improving first sulphur, boron, silicon then calcium, magnesium and phosphorus as well as enzymatic co-factors zinc, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum and cobalt. Many of these elements are essential for resistance to pest and diseases and the resilience to climatic extremes such as drought or frosts. A lot of chemicals and fertilisers are counterproductive to producing humus, the application of large quantities of inorganic N as found in urea, MAP and DAP is compromising the effective system of producing N in the soil. In addition, large quantities of water-soluble P such as found in superphosphate, MAP, DAP compromises the symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi which are essential for
maximising the ability of plants to obtain water nitrogen and minerals from the soil. Chemicals, interfere with the transport of sugars, the formation of soil aggregates, availability of trace minerals and water holding capacity. Former best management practices of soils has made our farms drought prone. With the new information and understanding of science that wasn’t prevalent previously, farmers can, (by adopting new best management practices), change farming systems to be sustainable, profitable and meet environmental goals. ‘For me, it is far better to grasp the universe as it really is, than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring’. — Carl Sagan.

New haymaker a real knockout u by Andy Bryenton
Baling hay has been a big part of farming since before the era of diesel tractors — and ever since the concept of machinedriven haymaking revolutionized farming, the big green machines from John Deere have led the charge. Now their new 0 Series round balers are set to step things up a notch, delivering greater efficiency and all round performance. “The new 0 Series Round Balers expand our portfolio of hay and silage, and now pre-cutter balers,” says Nick Weinrich, product marketing manager for hay tools for John Deere. “In fact, the 0 Series Baler line includes the highest capacity Class II and III pre-cutter round balers on the market today, and we’ll offer customers the first Class IV precutter round baler available.” The full range will include dry hay, silage and pre-cutter options for versatility across a wide range of farming applications. Key to the performance of the 0 Series — which follows on and builds on the legacy of John Deere’s very successful 9 series — is the adoption of the MegaWide HC2 feed system which delivers faster hay intake and processing, and which increases balemaking capacity per hour compared to previous models. It also helps operators handle a wide variety of forage material and swath sizes with ease, offering a 2.2 m pick up on both 1.21 m (4 foot) and 1.52 m
(5 foot) bale models, allowing them to cover more hectares per day. Add in further innovations such as a twin-rotor feed system for more uniform hay intake and processing, a larger diameter roller baffle system, a self-cleaning drop floor that allows the operator to remove plugs from the cab; and a third drive roll to eliminate belt slippage when the going gets tough, and you have a machine which has been refined across the board. It’s no wonder that tests have proven greater efficiency in bale density — and of course, precut material saves time at feed-out. There’s a final trick up the 0 Series’ sleeve as well — the option to add a twin bale accumulator, which allows two fully wrapped bales to be transported even as another is being formed. Quicker pickups of multiple bales in the same place will speed up the collection process even further. John Deere’s latest are available to order now at your local farm implement dealership. ¢

Noise phobias in pets u by Yolande B. Howell BVSc (Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre
With Guy Fawkes, and all the fireworks which come with it, having just gone it seems a good time to talk about noise phobias in dogs and cats.
REAL PET FOOD
Behaviour problems and phobias develop when animals learn to overreact to stimuli suchas fireworks or thunder that actually do not represent a threat. Signs of fear when exposed to noises include: • Panting • Vocalising (whining, howling) • Trembling / shaking • Pacing • Hiding
All raw products, absolutely no preservatives!

cleaners, gunshots, trains, baby crying etc. Another important aspect that all pet owners need to bear in mind is that when a pet is fearful it is best to not molly coddle them. Giving them more cuddles and saying “it’s okay, it’s okay” basically sends them a message that it is okay to be fearful. It tends to reinforce the phobia. Pets that seek their owner’s company should be allowed to stay by them, but owners should bear in mind that petting and comforting them is also reinforcing the fear and phobia. The best thing one can do is to go about your normal routine and show your pets that there is nothing to be worried or be fearful about. Turn the music or television up and just have them near you. There are other products available to help pets such as dog or cat pheromones, but these are best discussed with your vet. Medications tend to be reserved for severe cases and it will have to be prescribed by your veterinarian. ¢

Salivating excessively Seeking people Digging Chewing or running through barriers Urinating and/or defecation Risk of noise phobias include breed, age and the pet’s origin. Some breeds are less likely to be fearful of noises such as labradors, springer spaniels and cocker spaniels. The risk of noise phobias has also shown to increase with age, while dogs have a reduced risk of noise phobias when they have been living with the owner who bred them, compared with a dog that has had two or more owners. Treatment and management of any phobia is not straightforward, but your vet will be able to advise you with the options available and devise a plan. Owners can help at home by exposing a new puppy or kitten to a variety of noises — recordings of different noises are available and very useful. Such CDs should include thunder, fireworks, firecrackers, vacuum
