Four Burnham Military Camp-based Army staff will make history in July as part of a mixed-gender NZDF squad contesting rowing’s King’s Cup in the UK. It’s 100 years since six nations New Zealand, Australia, the UK, the USA, Canada and France competed for the cup as troops waited to return to their home countries after the first world war. This year those six nations will be joined by Germany and the Netherlands to race for the cup as part of the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames, near London. The event will honour the past, cement the relationships and alliances of today and build towards the future of the competing nations, including in gender balance. The race will be the first time men and women have raced in the same boat at an elite, international event. Major Emily Hume, Corporal Rebekah Salt, Lance Corporal Mark Evans and Private Ryan Flintoft joined the rest of the squad from throughout the country at Christchurch’s Kerrs Reach to train last weekend (April 6–7). All four Burnham-based members say they feel honoured to be selected to compete at the prestigious regatta. LCPL Evans said it would be a career highlight for him, and an added bonus was the example it was setting for his 12-year-old daughter, Jordyn. “I think it’s amazing. It’s definitely where society is going, this is the first rowing race at an elite, international event that is going to be mixed gender, so everyone that is involved in it is part of history,” he said. “This opportunity to row with the NZDF is just a dream come true. It’s a career highlight; that’s for sure.” Corporal Salt said being named in the squad was a dream come true and that making history as part of a

mixed-gender crew made it even more special. She rowed while at Rangiora High School but had to give up when she joined the army as there were no clubs near Waiouru or Linton. She took it up again while studying at Otago University and continued once she was posted to Burnham. “I won’t take for granted the amazing opportunity I have been given to travel halfway around the

globe to do what I love,” she said. Major Hume, who last rowed for Villa Maria College 15 years ago, said NZDF team coach and former Great Britain rowing representative Rachel Gamble-Flint has an interesting job ahead. “It will be a challenge for the coach, knowing where to put everyone in the boat, because men and women have different strengths,” she said. 

West Melton’s Country Fete has once again proved to be an outstanding success, with organisers estimating a turnout of more than 5,000 with all proceeds going to West Melton School. One of those organisers, Hannah Fifield, described the last Saturday’s fete and West Melton School’s as “an amazing day!!” “We estimate over 5,000 people attended, which was similar to our last fete in 2017, maybe slightly higher this time,” said spokesperson Hannah Fifield . “We’ve had a lot of positive feedback on the great variety of food, stalls and entertainment  All the fun of the fete that included some very talented students who took to the stage to She said it was very satisfying seeing showcase their singing, dancing our community come together and and music, as well as having a few everyone enjoying themselves. special guest appearances from West “Our initial calculations show we have Melton’s own ‘Sonny and Cher and the exceeded our estimated fundraising Village People’. target. The school’s promotions and sports administrator Rita Spadoni said students learnt about murals and had the opportunity to submit a design. The cultural committee received many submissions, she said, and four with special merit were selected for the presentation to the Board of Trustees. “Initially, the mural was going to incorporate a patiki (flounder) kowhaiwhai pattern, but after consultation with local iwi, it was decided that an original adaptation of

the koru would be more appropriate.” All learners who submitted designs were treated to an afternoon at the Christchurch Art Gallery to participate in their Wall to Wall exhibition in August. Many students throughout the school contributed to the mural. Not only did students paint the mural, but also many staff and some of the community painted the two colourful weavings, which combine the colours of their whanau: Hill, Trickett, Ross, Langdale, Selwyn and Newton. 

Weedons Community Centre The place to be  by Mike Isle

Selwyn District Council officially opened the new Weedons Community Centre last Friday in front of about 60 people, including Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton, Selwyn MP Amy Adams and councillors, members of the Weedons Reserve Committee and the community. Pupils from Weedons School gave speeches before the building was declared open.

Tourism in the Selwyn district continues to grow with increasing visitor guest nights and spending.

 Tourism spending takes off in Selwyn  Pictured at the official opening front row from left: Weedons Reserve Committee chairman Peter Holmes, Mayor Sam Broughton and Selwyn MP Amy Adams. They were joined by councillors, and members of the Weedons Reserve Committee and Weedons community

Council major projects property manager John Reid said the new Weedons Community Centre provides a modern facility for the local community as well as the sports groups who regularly use the reserve. “It’s a ‘fit-for-purpose’ facility that recognises the relatively limited size of the local community, but also is of a level of specification that will provide the wider Selwyn region with a small boutique facility available for smaller functions,” said Reid. “The Weedons Reserve Committee has worked for many years to replace the old, outdated and damaged centre. Along with recent upgrades to the tennis and cricket facilities on the reserve, the council is very pleased that the Weedons community now has a building which is much more attractive for the community to use.”

The project has been in the pipeline since 2011 when the first plans were drawn up, said Weedons Reserve Committee chairman Peter Holmes. “With the many challenges we’ve faced along the way, it’s great to see the building finally completed. The whole committee has been heavily involved in the process, while we have had great support from the staff at the council,” Holmes said. “This is a community centre, which will be used by the cricket and tennis clubs, but also by the wider community. This is a great asset for Weedons and one we should all be proud of.” The new facility has a multi-purpose room, a kitchen and storeroom, 24hour accessible toilet and two changing rooms. Construction of the $830,000 facility began in May 2018 and was completed in December 2018. 

The latest quarterly economic update from analysts Infometrics showed the Selwyn economy increased by 5.4 per cent during the 12 months to December 2018. A highlight is the continued growth of tourism in the district, with tourism spending increasing by 14 per cent to $113m, up from $99 million a year ago. Guest nights are also up by 6.3 per cent, or a total of 85,011 nights in the district during the year to December 2018; this is up from 80,005 a year ago. The district’s mayor said this

could be attributed to the hard work of local operators and the council’s efforts in supporting that work. “More visitors are seeing our district as a place to stop and enjoy our unique offerings,” Sam Broughton said. The update also showed the district’s unemployment rate had fallen to 2.1 per cent, the lowest in two years. Electronic card consumer spending in the district increased by 14 per cent over the year to December 2018, compared to the previous year. That is well above the national increase of 4.5 per cent. 

The effects of the Canterbury earthquakes on student numbers at Lincoln University may finally be over. The total number of Equivalent Full-time Students (EFTS) enrolling for semester one this year is the highest since the series of quakes, which began in September 2010. In 2010 semester one EFTS stood at 1,067 — in 2019 they are at 1,061. Lincoln University Acting ViceChancellor Professor Bruce McKenzie said the university had worked hard to regain the pre-quake numbers. “I think the figures show that Lincoln University is seen as an institution, which provides a world-class education, and the province provides opportunities for a great future. It is a vote of confidence in us and in Canterbury.” He said one focus in 2019 was to continue the drive to grow the number of Maori and Pasifika students at Lincoln. Six new scholarships started this year to support and encourage Maori and Pasifika students to achieve their aspirations for their whenua, whanau, hapu and iwi. The scholarships are a key component of Lincoln University’s Whenua Strategy (for Maori) and Motu Strategy (for Pasifika) and are given to students who show excellence in a range of subjects, including those focussed on Te Ao Maori, agriculture and science.

Move to attract visitors to Selwyn

 by Ann van Engelen

 by Mike Isle

The Selwyn District Council is on a concerted drive to attract more visitors to the district and it is asking some of our top influencers to help do it.

 Last year’s tourism summit attracted 60 businesses — the council is hoping for even more this year

New Zealand attracts half a million tourists every year from China alone and tourism expenditure in Selwyn last year was up 14 per cent on the previous year. Even so, the council believes the district can do better and is mounting its second Selwyn Tourist Summit. The one-day event in late June, with the date and venue still to be announced, will bring together business owners, invited speakers, and tourist operators for a series of workshops. Council community relations manager Denise Kidd said the summit

provides an opportunity for businesses to upskill, network and hear from highquality, practical speakers with a focus on the specific tourism factors in the region. “Last year we had 60 businesses involved in the summit, and they were very positive and encouraging and seeing it return. We’re hoping to expand this year, inviting more businesses to attend. We see opportunities for a whole range of businesses that haven’t traditionally been considered part of the sector but support it, to take part. 

The West Melton St John Youth Division held a recruitment drive last Monday as a way to encourage youth to join the organisation. “It is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn skills such as first aid and drill marching as well as attend fun activities such as camps,” says assistant manager, Julie Gillespie. “We have approximately 30 members at present and are growing. The youngest in our penguins’ programme is six years old. Then you become a cadet, which goes up to 18 years old. We go to help at public events on the first aid team and later have opportunities in the wider organisation. New Chapel

Lincoln’s University’s new chapel is officially open. The opening ceremony was conducted last month by Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton, along with the university’s acting vice-chancellor Professor Bruce McKenzie.

Futures Canterbury Selwyn Golf Hub was launched in February to encourage younger generations and their families to play golf as a sport.

“We hold regular fun team golf and family events for everyone to participate in,” says Play Golf Canterbury coordinator, Pip Deans. These events are either six or nine holes depending on the age and ability of the players. “We also have taster coaching programmes and had 25 new people come along last week at Greendale golf course. It is a fun way to learn new skills and get out as a family including grandparents. We had a 20-month-old

girl with a small club in her hand and also a three-year-old — there is no age limit. “We make it fun and are going to ramp up the competition side of things in spring so members can compete against each other. On April 18 we are having competition at Hororata for younger players, and we are hosting a fun day on Sunday, April 28.” For more information see the Futures Canterbury Selwyn Hub Facebook page. 

Lincoln University senior chaplain Sampson Knight said the purpose of the chapel is to serve the surrounding community, including students and staff from all faith backgrounds and denominations, as well as those without religious affiliation or faith. “The chapel is overseen by the chaplaincy team, who offer this place of prayer, peace, stillness and spiritual rest amidst the business and demands of university life and the incorporation of faith into a student’s daily routine,” he said. The chaplaincy service is part of the pastoral care the university offers, supporting spiritual and emotional wellbeing. Lincoln University is working to promote greater wellbeing

across campus, with a comprehensive plan to strengthen successful existing programmes and develop new initiatives. There are 6,299 students enrolled at Lincoln. The university has enlisted Dr Jackie Blunt, a practising GP and wellbeing coach, to develop a strategic approach to facilitating wellbeing at Lincoln. China important to Selwyn Busy time for libraries New Zealand has been warned to be careful in its dealings with China, and any wrong move could have an impact on Selwyn says business analysist Infometrics. Recently there have been concerns raised about the diplomatic relationship between New Zealand and China.

 Dairy accounts for 79 per cent of Selwyn exports

The 2019 China-New Zealand Year of Tourism postponement and decisions on upgraded communications plans and other issues have created headlines and the prime minister has made a flying visit to China for top level talks. It is timely that she did, says economist Brad Olsen from Infometrics. “Trade between China and New Zealand in 2018 made up 22% of New Zealand’s two-way trade. This result makes China our largest trading partner’, said Olsen. In 2018, dairy exports to China topped $4.5b, That is where Selwyn comes in.

For dairy exports to China Selwyn is second only to Westland. As Selwyn strides to boost tourism it is significant to note that China has become New Zealand’s second largest tourism market after Australia - 12% of New Zealand’s total in 2018, behind only Australia’s 39%. Olsen says New Zealand’s ongoing positive relationship with China is essential to broader economic success for this country. “So, if there are issues in the New Zealand-China relationship, we’ll need to work them out, and quickly,” he said. 

Whether it is purchasing new thermal curtains or carpets, fixing windows and doors against drafts, upgrading the fireplace or getting your long-awaited spa pool — don’t forget the outside also needs care. Before the wet weather, consider washing the outside of your house, sheds, footpaths and driveways as sometimes required maintenance can be concealed by the slightest amount of moss, debris and clumps of deteriorating leaves. It takes just a small hole from a displaced nail in your roof, or sealer missing from joinery to create a magnitude of water issues including wet ceilings, rotten joists and dampness in your house. One broken tile or small nail hole is often the cause of a massive amount of water getting into your building without you realising. An old roof can have gaps, which allow the wind to blow rain through. Missing nails also create an environment for roofing iron to be ripped from the building. That in

itself is a dangerous position to be in. One gust of wind can remove an entire roof, and the iron can end up across the farm including on the road. It also has the ability to slice off a head or cut an animal in two. Good downpipes and gutters catch valuable rainwater as well as ensure that your building is not quietly being destroyed by water retention. It is often not seen until the damage is done as it can spill back under the eaves into the internal walls. Now is the time to ensure they are up to scratch and clear of breaks and debris such as leaves and possibly dead rodents. That needs to be done not only on houses but buildings of all types, including cow sheds, pig sties, machinery and shearing sheds. Check your water tanks and rain harvesting systems are not quietly leaking and consider upgrading them or purchasing another if your water requirements have grown. With wet weather on its way, it is a good time to take advantage of keeping your water supply topped up naturally and preparing for the future dry spells, so you have a good supply for your home, garden and animals. Winter is a time when we want as little as possible to go wrong, so preparing in advance, and calling the experts beforehand is a wise move. Having a plan and ensuring all that can be fixed or upgraded is done early will help eliminate unnecessary stress. Contractors are often busy and booked well in advance. Having your valuable buildings maintained pre-winter both protects your assets and will save on unexpected emergency call-outs, which often happen in the middle of a dark winter’s night. 

Traditional Easter fun  by Andy Bryenton

There are few holiday traditions more fun than the good old fashioned Easter egg hunt — the scent of a crisp autumn morning and the promise of delicious chocolate to be found are only part of the magic. In West Melton, one local Easter egg hunt has grown alongside a new community, becoming a yearly fixture, which attracts families from all around. What began with a single family’s good idea to hide their Easter treasures in the local park in Preston Downs, at the dawn of the new area has grown along with the populous. Now, as those original kids reach their teenage years, the Easter egg hunt has grown to encompass neighbours and friends. A size of event, which needed a helping hand from local business to meet demand. With 1,500 eggs hidden last year and more to conceal for 2019, Ray White Real Estate in West Melton has stepped up, taking care of some of the ‘bunny related logistics’. This year the action is set to happen at Kirrin Island, Preston Downs at 1pm on Sunday, April 21. Kids will be able to hunt for those hundreds of eggs, ranging from minis to marshmallows to hollow chocolate confections. There will be a special area for the under two-year-olds to find their own Easter treasure and competitions for even bigger prizes. Expect treats for the best dressed, for the most fancifully decorated basket and for the winners of a colouring in competition run by the Ray White team. You can find out more about how to enter by visiting the hosts of the event at facebook.com/raywhitewestmelton. 

Wheels Week gets better with age  by Mike Isle

The annual pilgrimage by petrolheads to Ashburton for the iconic Wheels Week Plus promises to be one of the largest in the event’s 29-year history. Event secretary Peter Jacob said his organising committee had put together an action-packed programme for the event, which runs from May 4 to May 19. First up, on May 4, is the Ashburton Vintage Car Club Swap Meet in Tinwald. That is followed in swift order by the Ashburton Speedway Meet, the Americar Rod & Custom Club Show and vintage steam train rides at the Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum. Looking at the programme, there appears to be an average of five to six events every day of Wheels Week.

Jacob said two highlights of the programme would be the addition for the first time of the Ashburton Forks Railway and the Brian Chang racing truck, which would make its appearance between races at the Street Sprints on Sunday, May 12. More than 4,000 people are expected to attend over the course of the event, Jacob said.

 Now in its 29th year, Ashburton Wheels Week has become an iconic event in the petrolhead calendar

“All the clubs and branches do an excellent job attracting people to these events, and many of the events are included on the national calendars of various organisations.

“The Street Sprints attracted a full field of entries, the speedway had several national titles on the line, and the Rotary Car Show had attracted over 200 cars. We also attract visitors from all over the South Island,” Jacob said. Ashburton Wheels Week Plus May 4 to May 19. The full programme of events is at wheelsweek.co.nz. Free courses for mature drivers

KIRWEE

The Selwyn District Council and Age Concern are offering the district’s mature drivers free refresher courses on driving. The courses and there are four of them coming up in May, are designed to give drivers 60 years and above the opportunity to hone up their driving skills and refresh their knowledge of road rules and to go over new changes. Age Concern’s Yvonne Palmer said that even confident drivers were not always aware of new rules and a surprisingly high number of drivers admitted to having forgotten many rules. “There is also the advent of relatively new road conditions such as cycleways and the rules surrounding those,” she said. Palmer said a popular part of the course was the talk by a senior police sergeant who speaks for an hour at each course outlining road rules and stressing the need to drive to conditions. One thing that many drivers found surprising, Palmer said, was that many drivers didn’t realise how long it takes to bring a vehicle to a stop. “That’s particularly important to be aware of in winter when slippery conditions sometimes made driving hazardous,” she said. One course, in Lincoln, has already been held. There are four others:
