making sure the water leaving this place is in good condition,” James Guild said. Son Hamish, who runs the farming side of the business, said their concern is bigger than water. “Part of responsible farming in this environment is finding the balance between the natural environment and the productive capacity of the land.” Hamish paid tribute to the support they have had from Environment Canterbury biodiversity officer Jodi Rees.

In the recent round of Environment Canterbury Immediate Steps funding in Selwyn, High Peak Station came up trumps. It’s not the first time the Windwhistle property has been singled out. Two years ago, the Guild family applied for support to begin an ambitious project fencing off all feeder streams on their farm that lead into the Selwyn River. The recent grant will allow them to finish this work. “We’ve always had an interest in

A council spokesperson said adverse weather conditions have increased the turbidity of the water supply. “No E.coli has been detected in the water supply, however as result of the increased turbidity, the council cannot guarantee that the water is safe to drink and has issued a Boil Water Notice as a precaution.” When a Boil Water Notice is in place, the Ministry of Health advises people should boil or treat all water from taps before drinking, brushing teeth or using it in food preparation. In addition, water
used to make ice should also be boiled before freezing. Residents will need to continue to boil water until notified that the Boil Water Notice is lifted. It is likely to be in place for several days,” the spokesperson said. Anyone who shows any signs of sickness is advised to visit their doctor as soon as possible. “The council will continue to monitor the intake and reticulation system and keep residents informed of any updates.” Updates will also be posted online at www.selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

p Poppies planted at the Darfield War Memorial during last year’s Anzac Day service
Raising vital funds to support the needs of New Zealand’s 41,000 veterans and their families will be the focus of this year’s Poppy Appeal, themed ‘Remember to Care’. The Anzac Day related appeal is in its 95th year, making it New Zealand’s oldest continuously run appeal. RSA Chief Executive Jack Steer said the longevity of the appeal reflects New Zealand’s long-service to assisting countries near and far in times of conflict, in peacetime missions and other deployments in aid of others. “While for most of the 20th Century New Zealanders knew that the Poppy
Appeal was a key part of providing support to our former servicemen and women and their dependents, that is not so well understood today,” he said. “The Poppy Appeal funds can only be used to provide help and support to those veterans and their families, regardless of whether they are RSA members or not. All funds collected by clubs locally are also deployed locally, providing care to those servicemen and women and their families living in your communities,” Members of the public can support the appeal by making a donation to a Street Appeal collector on Friday, April 21. ¢

p James Guild checking on the health of a native tree planted along the banks of one of the waterways they are protecting
Hamish said with a QEII covenant already covering 94ha of their property along the south branch of the Selwyn River, it made sense to protect this part of the farm, especially with high public interest in the catchment. “The Selwyn River is front and centre of people’s minds at the moment. And biodiversity is our main motivation to do this.” Three streams on the property now feature riparian planting backed up by wire fencing to keep stock out. Close to 5km of fencing in total has been erected, which as well as protecting the streams closes off a large swamp and a steep hill face with a spring head at the bottom. James described the deal as a triple win for the farm, the QEII
Trust and Environment Canterbury, as the area is now protected in perpetuity, the farm has gained additional fencing which aids land management, and its biodiversity values will be maintained. The Guilds say their reward is knowing they are making a difference benefitting not only their family, but the wider community. “I don’t think anyone can argue that the end result is worth it,” James said. “It was a considerable expense for us and there have been a lot of secondary costs for the farm, but I think we have to say it’s a great result so far. “At the end of the day we are doing it for the protection of the river and quality of water that comes out of the farm.” ¢

p Local MP Amy Adams is calling for Selwyn nominations for this year’s Green Ribbon Awards
“These prestigious awards recognise outstanding work to protect and enhance the environment by individuals, communities and organisations,” Ms Adams said. “This is a great chance to raise the profile of environmental initiatives and honour our environmental leaders. “They are a great way to showcase an impressive array of initiatives making a difference to our natural assets and wildlife.” The 10 award categories include biodiversity, resilience to climate change, waste minimisation, caring for freshwater, coastal and ocean protection, leadership, philanthropy
and partnerships, and the Supreme Winner category. “There will also be an additional award for outstanding contributions to the protection of our unique flora and fauna.” “The finalists will be invited to an awards banquet night at Parliament. This is a wonderful occasion to celebrate conservation achievements and enable people to network with others who share their enthusiasm for protecting our nature.” For more information on the awards go to www.greenribbonawards.org. nz. The Selwyn Lions Club is encouraging local young people to enter one of two Youth Speechmaker Competitions being run next month. The first competition is the ‘Emerging Speechmaker’ contest, a local district competition, and the second the internationally run ‘Young Speechmaker’ competition. Selwyn Lions first vice-president Alison Benefield said one of the driving forces for the Lions clubs is to encourage today’s youth into becoming tomorrow’s leaders. “These speechmaker contests help with personal development, giving young people the opportunity to develop the skills they need to become leaders. “The ‘Emerging Speechmaker’ contest is something we run as a district while those taking part in the international Young Speechmaker’ have the opportunity to compete overseas.” She said all entrants must be sponsored by a Lions Club and

Among the activities the children took part in were, orienteering, archery, gocarting and high ropes. ¢

There was plenty for Leeston residents to do over the weekend with the town’s annual street fete on Saturday followed by a Music on the Green event on Sunday. The Music on the Green event was the last of the Selwyn District Council’s summer event programme which has seen Music on the Green events held across the district. Despite the cooler temperatures, there was a reasonable turnout with parents enjoying the music and the younger ones taking advantage
of the other entertainment on offer. The Leeston Street Fete on Saturday was extremely popular with a large number of stalls and plenty of bargain hunters wandering the town’s main street which had been closed off for the event. The Record photographer Sara-Jane Ludemann was at both events. ¢

Field days in Kirwee a hit
7
u by Kent Caddick
Despite a wet start, organisers say the 2017 South Island Agricultural Field Days in Kirwee were a success. More than 30,000 people attended the event over the three days, which was an increase on the attendance at SIAFD 2015 the last time the event was held at Kirwee. SIAFD organising committee chair Rodney Hadfield said rain during the days leading up to the opening of the Field Days meant it was not an easy task to get the agricultural machinery and other display items onto the site. “We had to tow everything in with tractors, telehandlers and even a 4x4,” Mr Hadfield said. “I am very grateful to the members of the organising committee. They put in long hours in the weeks leading up to Field Days and then had to work extra hard to get everything finalised.” He said they scraped mud from the access laneways and rolled them before the opening. “Visitors were better off in gumboots on the opening day but after that it came right. Despite the weather, our numbers were up from the last time, so we are very pleased.” The best site awards for 2017 went to Alpine Buildings NZ Ltd which had the best large site, and Sudeley Angus, which had the best small site.
p There was a record crowd at this year’s SIAFD in Kirwee
p Organisers rolled the walkways to ensure visitors to the SIAFD had a comfortable day out
SAFETY FIRST
SIAFD media spokesperson Daniel Schat said other highlights of the Field Days were the comparative machinery demonstrations and the AgriInnovation awards. “Over the three days, hundreds of people watched harvesting and cultivation equipment run through their paces. The beet harvesting and maize chopping demonstrations were particularly popular.” Mr Schat said agricultural technology is the primary focus of the event. “More than 60 new products were released at this year’s Field Days, and we are the only major field days in New Zealand that holds active machinery demonstrations.” Sheffield’s Taege Engineering was named the overall winner of the SIAFD Agri-Innovation Award for its ‘Power Discs’, which are hydraulic disc openers that can be fitted to Taege seed drills. Mr Schat said the entries in the AgriInnovation Award were varied with entries ranging from software to machinery and tools, and this made judging difficult. He said the success of this year’s Field Days will provide the SIAFD Organising Committee the means to further develop its new site at Kirwee. ¢

Build & Renovate
Considering your home renovations Renovating can be costly and inconvenient, but can also increase the value and enjoyment of your home. Before you launch into renovations, take time to consider whether the expense and disruption is justified. There are two main reasons people renovate, to add to the comfort, use and value of the home or to tidy it up to sell. Reasons to renovate 1. Staying in the home If you intend staying in the home you may want to: • Add extra space to accommodate an expanding family, or simply to add a sense of spaciousness. • Add rooms for special purposes, such as an office or games room. • Change the configuration of the
100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
house for better flow, ease of use or orientation to sun and views. • Update and remodel to give the house a fresher, more modern look — this could involve major changes such as taking out walls to enlarge a room, putting in a new kitchen, or installing new wallboards and ceilings. Or it could simply be a matter of painting or wallpapering. • Restore the house to its original style while adding modern features in some areas, like the kitchen and bathroom. • Add value to increase your investment. 2. Renovating to sell If you are renovating to sell, it is likely that you’ll want to give the house an inexpensive makeover to freshen it up and make it more attractive to buyers. For example, repainting, repapering, or changing dated or damaged fixtures, such as a cracked basin in the bathroom. You need to consider the

tastes of potential buyers, which really means keeping everything fairly neutral to appeal to a wider range of people. Not everyone warms to bright feature walls or pink bathtubs. Renovations that will increase the appeal of your home may include painting the kitchen and bathroom, or putting in some decking to give an indoor-outdoor flow and an increased sense of space or some landscaping.

Don’t spend money that you won’t get back in the sale price. Ask a real estate agent for ideas to increase the house’s appeal, and how much you should spend without overcapitalising. Build & Renovate
p Be prepared for nasty surprises when you renovate p Make sure the renovations add to the appeal as well as the value of your home
house a very modern aspect, which is inconsistent with the other houses in the street, will lessen the range of potential purchasers. Beware of overcapitalising If you don’t intend selling, the money you spend on renovating will be an investment in the comfort and enjoyment of the house. Whether you increase the value of the home may not be an important factor in how much you decide to spend. However, it is easy to get carried away with the excitement of doing up a home and overcapitalise by spending money that can never be recouped
if you do end up having to sell. You may regret the $60,000 kitchen you put into your $200,000 house should unexpected life changes occur, such as a marriage breakdown or a business failure. It may be money you never get back if you have to sell and apportion the proceeds. If your house needs a great deal of work to get it how you would like, decide whether you want to go to all the trouble and expense, or whether it would be better to sell and buy something more suited to your needs. Doing it yourself Many New Zealanders take on
renovation, redecoration and alteration projects in their homes, usually in the belief that it will save them money. How much you can do yourself realistically depends on your skills, time and energy. There may also be legal restrictions on doing work yourself if you don’t have the right qualifications. You need to consider Building Code requirements and getting building consent for some work. Many people are very capable of painting and wallpapering, and some straight-forward carpentry work. Some have the skills to do more difficult renovations and alterations. However, before you take on any work around your home, consider all the aspects of DIY. ¢

BY ANN MORGAN Duckingham Palace is the home to many white Indian Runner ducks including Lucky, Plucky, Jemima, Showduck, Gronway, Colin and Tony. It is also a haven for rescued endangered ducklings such as the Grey Teal, which get hand-reared and released back into the wild.
W
hen Stacey Austin and Larry Tessier (Sunny) moved to their property, there was a flock of Indian runners with 13 ducklings residing on the lake. “They are a lovely duck with great personalities but they are notoriously terrible parents,” said Stacey. “There were 13 ducklings and one was abandoned and all by itself on the lake, so I called it over and it amazingly came close enough for us to catch it in a net, and we called it Lucky. A couple of months later another lone duckling was peeping away by itself so we caught him and called him Plucky.”
The pair happened to be a male and a female and Stacey says nature then took over, and suddenly they had ducklings everywhere. “We house the babies in their own private enclosure and hand-rear them, they don’t go on the lake. We have 16 ducks in total at present and the number is growing. “The Indian runners are flightless and are amazing if you have an orchard or garden because their favourite foods are slugs, bugs and snails. As long as you don’t have brand new seedlings in your garden they will remove the bugs for you and fertilise the garden as they go.
The couple also feed their ducks cracked corn and chook chow with lots of fresh water, and Stacey says ideally people should have three females to a male. “They are amazing for people with lifestyle blocks and they get on with other birds, but if you want to keep the line pure they need to be kept separate. “They are a very healthy bird, like all ducks they can get worms, but I put apple cider vinegar in their drinking water to avoid this — maybe a quarter of a cup to ten litres of water. “They aren’t really an eating bird but they are the most prolific egg layer, we get approximately 300 eggs per year per duck.” Stacey

Lifestyle Blocks says the eggs are approximately twice the size of hens, are slightly richer and great for eating. “They make the best sponge and meringues. If your recipe asks for one egg just use a duck egg. I love them. “The Indian runners make great companions and their lifespan can be 15 years. They are super friendly with children and they don’t have sharp beaks like other ducks have. Their favourite treat is lettuce, they love it. “Our line is pure white but you can get fawn or a variety of different colours. They stand very tall and slim which is how you can tell they are a pure Indian runner. If it isn’t tall it could be crossed with a Pekin. “Indian runners are tall and lean and the female has a loud quack that the male doesn’t. “The male’s tail has a flick in it, the female’s doesn’t. “They are real characters and all run in a pack and follow each other and stick together, if one runs they all run. They often don’t know what they are running for.” Stacey says if you get them young enough they imprint really well. If you feed them in the same spot daily they will always run to that spot to eat, making locking them away at night easy. “They are happy to free range and do prefer to sleep outside under a

Bees on the block For lifestyle blocks the bee is an asset as it pollinates clover, crops and garden flowers, and produces that delectable sweet delight — honey.

Retired veterinarian and lifestyle block owner Dr Marjorie Orr, said bees are extremely important to agriculture and horticulture businesses. While gathering pollen and nectar from clovers, fruit trees, garden flowers and many horticultural crops, bees move pollen from one plant to another, pollinating the plants as they go. This is necessary if the plant is to produce fruit and seed. Dr Orr said among the main threats to bees are a reduction in flower numbers, the use of insecticides on farms and gardens, and the onset of pests and diseases that weaken and kill bees. “Not so long ago, bees got much of their pollen from broom, gorse and willow, and the pollen was very nutritious for hives,” Dr Orr said. “These plants are now classified as pests by councils and the Department of Conservation, so there are fewer of them around. This means that in many areas, there is less pollen and therefore honey-bee hives are weaker.” Dr Orr said the effects of insecticides on bees can be reduced by avoiding applying insecticides to flowering crops in daylight hours while bees are around.
p Speak to a local beekeeper about getting some hives on your lifestyle block
“Unusually warm temperatures in the early morning or evening may result in bees foraging when they would normally be back in their hive.” If using pesticides, choose products that break down quickly after application. “Pesticides that degrade within a few hours of application can be applied with minimal risk when bees are not foraging. When temperatures are unusually low, insecticide residues may remain toxic for longer. Products with activity lasting more than eight hours merit extra precautions.”
The most hassle-free way of acquiring a healthy bee presence is to ask a registered local bee-keeper if he or she would like to keep a few hives on your lifestyle block. All you need to provide is a quiet sheltered sunny corner and plenty of flowering plants. To encourage feral bees and bees from neighbouring hives, plant or encourage bee-friendly trees and shrubs on waterway margins, in windbreaks, along field edges and roadsides and in native scrub and bush. ¢

Staying safe on the roads during Easter Like the rest of New Zealand, roads in Selwyn will become increasingly busy during Easter weekend, with higher traffic volumes and a variety of different vehicles. Many of these drivers will be heading off on holiday or having at least a few days away to catch up with family and friends. When travelling it is always important to allow enough time to get to your destination, drive with patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Holiday traffic will also include many extra campervans and other vehicles towing boats, caravans or trailers. If you are towing, the maximum speed limit on the open road is 90km/h. Keep left and pull over when it is safe to let other vehicles pass. Keeping a safe following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front will allow you enough distance should the vehicle in front of you stop suddenly. Holiday driving often means spending several hours behind the wheel. Long journeys can be tiring, and tiredness can be fatal if you don’t recognise the signs. Get plenty of sleep before your journey, and try to drive at times of the day when you are normally awake. Plan for rest breaks from driving every couple of hours. Get out of your vehicle and even take a short walk to improve alertness. If you do start feeling tired, take a short break, or if possible, share the driving. Use the air conditioning if your vehicle has it, as cool air will keep you more alert and will help avoid frustration and stress, which are major causes of fatigue.

The safety belt is one of the top safety features in your vehicle and only takes a second to buckle up. No one wants to be involved in a crash but that small step increases your chance of avoiding serious injury by up to 40% if the unfortunate occurs. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure that all passengers under 15 years are restrained either in a seat belt or an approved child seat suitable to their size and weight. Excessive speed, or inappropriate speed for the conditions, is regrettably all too common at this time of year. With some travellers wanting to get to their destination as soon as possible, frustration with slower or heavy traffic
can sometimes cause drivers to make unsafe decisions, particularly when overtaking or at pulling out at intersections. ¢

Winning formula under the hood by Andy Bryenton
While the overall vehicle of the year award is a coveted prize in the realm of automotive manufacturing, the engineers behind the scenes hold their breath for another yearly accolade — the prestigious Engine of the Year competition. Covering everything from fire-breathing V8s to frugal sub-1,000cc power plants, this is a closely contested fight between the big names in motoring. While 2016 was a big year for big power — with Ferrari’s 3.9-litre biturbo V8 taking overall top spot — it was a motor with a cross section smaller than a piece of A4 paper which racked up the most talked about accolade. Ford’s diminutive but powerful 998cc EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo took home its ninth award in the Engine of the Year competition, holding on to the top ranking in its category convincingly, despite a spirited challenge from

Volkswagen and BMW. “Despite lots of competitors recently launching their own three-cylinder turbocharged designs, Ford’s wonderful 1.0 EcoBoost is still the number-one engine in its category class,” enthused La Repubblica’s Massimo Nascimbene, while L’Automobile Magazine’s Christophe Congrega marvelled at the tiny unit’s unparalleled capability: “With high torque at the very low end, this high-tech three-cylinder turbo provides the driving performance of a small turbo diesel, but without any of the noise or vibration. It may be small, but the EcoBoost is one of the great engineering achievements of its time.” Smar t computer control, turbocharging and compression make all the difference in this category, and the EcoBoost engine has them all. It is now at the heart of no less than eight Ford vehicles worldwide, including a Kiwi favourite, the new Ford Fiesta.
p Good things come in small packages — it’s a ninth consecutive win for Ford’s small 1.0 EcoBoost engine
Needless to say, that tiny displacement means big gains in fuel economy, but the real surprise for those getting behind the wheel of an EcoBoost powered vehicle is the amount of ready power on tap. Combine this peppy response with Ford’s ability to construct a light yet rigidframed chassis and body and 998cc suddenly feels just as willing as the ‘big’ two-litre mills of yesteryear. Of course,
the EcoBoost technology pioneered here in the award-winning sub-one-litre class is set to change things up in other areas of the Ford family as well. Another big surprise utilising the same tech, has been the turbocharged four found in the new Mustang — an engine which goes toe to toe with the classic muscle car’s traditional V8 and has won acclaim of its own as a modern alternative. ¢
