The first-ever Hororata Night Glow festival event, run by the Hororata Community Trust, will be held at the Hororata Domain on Saturday. The event is shaping up to be a spectacular and unique experience with tethered hot air balloons set to light up the night sky, surrounded by a vibrant autumn festival with food and music. Ballooning Canterbury pilot, Michael Oakley, is coordinating the balloons for the event from the company’s Hororata base, and has organised a Hororata flyin prior to the Night Glow event.

“One of the appeals for balloonists to come to an event is the chance to fly in a different area with a group of other balloon enthusiasts,” Mr Oakley said. “The crews are arriving earlier in the week so that we can have some flights together if the weather allows. The crews will be billeted with local families and are looking forward to enjoying all our community has to offer.” Mr Oakley said one of the facets of ballooning that adds a certain romanticism to it is that it holds to certain small traditions, some of which

go back to ballooning’s origins in France. “One of these traditions is for the pilot, or aeronaut, to present the landowner on whose property they make their final landing with a ceremonial bottle of champagne. “Hot air balloons are at the mercy of the wind somewhat so when and where we fly early in the mornings will only be decided just prior to launching.

Beef+Lamb New Zealand is looking for the Ultimate Steak Connoisseur to help determine New Zealand’s tastiest steak. The successful candidate will form part of the judging panel for the 2018 PGG Wrightson Steak of Origin Grand Final competition at Mystery Creek in June, but will need to display an unrivalled passion for steak to claim the coveted role. Prospective applicants are asked to submit 50 words on why they are New Zealand’s Ultimate Steak Connoisseur and describe how they like their steak cooked. Alternatively, they can submit a video no more than one minute long covering the same two topics. Head judge, Graham Hawkes, said the Steak of Origin committee felt that a good-quality steak is as Kiwi as cricket on the beach at Christmas, so they wanted to comb the nation to find New Zealand’s Ultimate Steak Connoisseur. “We do not expect the candidate to be a chef, or come from a culinary background, we simply want to see passion for tender, succulent steak. “The successful candidate will be

someone whose application stands out from the herd. Kiwi steaks are no ordinary steaks, so we don’t want an ordinary judge.” Mr Hawkes said the selected taster will be expected to judge the steaks based on aroma, taste and flavour, tenderness, juiciness and texture. All applications should be sent to imogen@beeflambnz.co.nz. Further information on the role can be found at recipes.co.nz or the Beef+Lamb New Zealand Facebook page. ¢

p Selwyn library users are being asked to help improve services through a Selwyn District Libraries survey

The 2018 Library Survey will take place from April 23 to May 25, and a Selwyn District Council spokesperson said the survey aims to gather feedback about the services, resources and programmes offered by the libraries. “The main aim of the project is to review core and holiday programmes, as well as evaluate customer feedback gathered during the year. “Current library members, as well as non-members, are encouraged to participate in the survey to provide data for planning and development for future years. “The survey is designed to take only a few minutes to complete and asks users a range of questions, such

as which services and programmes respondents are aware of and have used, as well as where improvements could be suggested.” The online survey can be accessed at the libraries’ website (selwynlibraries. co.nz). It is also available to be completed at the Rolleston, Leeston, Lincoln or Darfield libraries using inhouse iPads. Printed copies are also available at the libraries, including the Mobile Library. The Selwyn District Libraries undertake a survey every two years. Information is gathered by external research company Resona. All survey responses are anonymous and confidential. ¢

“We will always endeavour to respect people’s property, especially when to comes to landing. As with ballooning tradition, the pilots will be presenting landowners with a bottle of wine to thank them,” he said. At the Hororata Night Glow, the balloons are tethered to the ground during the Glow, as they perform to music — they are not airborne. People will be able to meet the pilots, walk through a cold inflated balloon and participate in demonstrations with the University of Canterbury, as they explore Bernoulli’s principle and the science behind hot air balloons. “This along with the live music,

The minister visited Christchurch to inspect one of the houses and to meet with Amber, a HNZC tenant who is happy and grateful to have been offered the restored house. Amber describes the house as providing a warm and comfortable place for her family to call home. Her home is one of dozens built by prisoners in a specially designed construction yard at the prison in Rolleston.

The programme was viewed as “a win-win’’ by the minister. “Prisoners gain valuable skills and qualifications while the restored homes are returned to boost the state housing portfolio across greater Christchurch,” he said. Amber, who lives with her four-yearold son and 12-year-old daughter, moved into the house late last year. The minister said he was pleased the house had helped provide much-needed stability for Amber and her family. ¢

April 26 - 2018  THE RECORD

Focus on road safety Concern over fatal crashes on Selwyn’s roads has led the Selwyn District Council and Police to work together to reduce risk for road users. Rolleston-based district councillor, Nicole Reid, who is chair of council’s road safety committee, said road crashes impose a massive and unacceptable burden of death, pain and suffering. “Research shows that every road death affects a huge network of people, not just the victim’s direct family and friends, while Victim Support provides assistance to an average of eight people per crash victim. “As a district, we have been working towards our district vision of ‘zero deaths and serious injuries on Selwyn roads’ for some time, and we are serious about working towards that vision,” Councillor Reid said. “We support the new government’s stance on road safety championing Vision Zero, which is a proven strategy to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries and is used in a growing number of countries and cities around the world. “It aims to change how governments, stakeholders and the population approach road safety. A core message is there are no accidents, but crashes whose causes are preventable. “The term road toll infers that a cost must be paid to use the roads, but people don’t have to die to use the roads and we shouldn’t accept it as an inevitability.”

She said council’s road safety strategy involves a partnership with NZ Police and other key partners, to reduce crashes and improve road safety. Inspector Peter Cooper said police are primarily focussing on seatbelts, alcohol, cell phones and speed as main risk factors to road safety. “A high proportion of crashes are happening at rural intersections,” Inspector Cooper said. “With over 2,000 intersections in the district, Selwyn is one of the highest risk districts for intersection crashes in New Zealand. “We see both tourists and locals who are familiar with the local roads being killed in these crashes. “So far in 2018, there has been a significant increase in motorcyclist fatalities, with 16 motorcyclists killed nationally. “We advise road users to treat every intersection with care. Stop means stop. The emotional toll on our families, the community and the emergency services attending these crashes, has to stop. “The majority of fatal and serious crashes are human error. Leave the alcohol alone, put on your seatbelt, put down your phone, lift your foot off the accelerator, concentrate at the intersection and we can all arrive home safely,” Inspector Cooper said. ¢

p A new tyre recycling plant at Pines Resource Recovery Park in Rolleston will use cutting edge technology

Selwyn District Council has agreed to lease a site at its Pines Resource Recovery Park in Rolleston to Canterbury company Eneform Ltd, for a pyrolysis plant to recycle end-of-life tyres and plastics. Eneform plans to establish a plant using an enclosed pyrolysis process, which would initially process end-of-life tyres but would have capacity to also accept plastics in the future. Council’s assets manager, Murray Washington, said the proposal is an exciting opportunity for Selwyn to be a world leader in green technology. “This initiative is positive for both our community and for the environment,” Mr Washington said. “The issue of waste tyres is a huge issue around the world, with growing stockpiles and the risk of environmental damage.”

He said the Eneform proposal offers a way of dealing with that issue using an innovative, clean and safe technology. “Not only will the process effectively and safely recycle end-of-life tyres, it will also extract valuable resources that can be used in place of fossil fuels. “For the community, the plant will help create employment and business growth, and provide education opportunities for visitors to the Resource Recovery Park.” Mr Washington said the proposed plant is consistent with the operations of the Resource Recovery Park, and will make a significant contribution to the objectives of a clean environment and a healthy community. ¢

Harriet Watson is making the most of her first semester at Lincoln University, and early signs point to New Zealand primary industry being the ultimate beneficiary. The eighteen-year-old former Darfield High School student is majoring in agribusiness and food marketing. After graduation, her plan is to work in the primary sector, helping shift the focus from primarily commodity-based products to value-added products. “Obviously, the New Zealand agricultural industry is really important to the economy, so being part of that is my ultimate goal, really — helping overcome the challenges heading our way,” she said. Ms Watson’s start at university received what she describes as a huge boost in her last year at Darfield High School, when she successfully applied for two scholarships — the Future Leaders Scholarship at Lincoln University and the New Zealand Meat Industry Association Scholarship. She was also granted a further and separate scholarship, the Elizabeth Richards Trust, by the school. She said she and her parents, Tony and Sarah, learned of her scholarship successes in the final months leading up to Christmas when she had already committed to her courses at Lincoln University. “We were all really stoked when we heard. Keep cosy with RD Petroleum this winter RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight for farm and rural residents around the South Canterbury region, however, nowadays urban residents also enjoy the same excellent customer service for which RDP is known for in rural communities, through their home heating diesel. RDP began its home heating diesel delivery service to the lower South Island’s main urban centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill a number of years ago. Customer demand has continued to increase year upon year, and RDP has responded with specialised improvements to its delivery equipment. The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating diesel in each urban centre are drawn from the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This means they have the latest communication and GPS tracking technology on board, so the operations team always know where they are and how far away they are from their next delivery stop. RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come equipped with a specially-designed 60m hose, through which the diesel is pumped from the truck into house tanks. The length of the hose allows the trucks to access tanks without having to enter the property, avoiding damaging the driveway.

RDP is the place to go if you require diesel conveniently delivered to your home and as a loyal RDP customer you’re offered discounted pricing and can become eligible for value-added benefits.

PREPARE FOR WINTER Keeping an eye on winter power costs

Save Lives

The first winter energy bill can come as a shock, but there are ways you can avoid running up big bills according to EECA Energywise. EECA technical adviser, Christian Hoerning, says it’s important not to scrimp on heating because living in a cold, damp house can cause respiratory and other illnesses. However, Mr Hoerning says many households can save on their hot water bills without compromising comfort. He suggests running a bucket test to find out if you can cut your hot water use. “Turn the shower on to a comfortable hot temperature. If the shower fills a 10 litre bucket in less than a minute — it’s wasting water, energy and money. “If the shower fills the bucket in only 40 seconds, a family of four could save about $500 a year on their electricity bills.” Mr Hoerning says you can replace your showerhead for one with a more efficient flow rate of nine litres a minute or less, or you can install an inexpensive shower flow restrictor to your existing shower. “An efficient showerhead gives you a great shower — we are not suggesting you shower in a trickle of water.” If people in your house have 20 minute showers, you might want to

look at the maths, according to Mr Hoerning. “In a household of four, each minute you add to your shower time is about $100 a year.” Washing your clothes in cold water will also save you money. Mr Hoerning calculates that at four loads a week, cold water washes could save you around $55 to $80 each year. He says shopping around for an energy supplier, which best meets your needs, is another way you can greatly reduce your energy costs. “The What’s My Number website is a free and independent tool, which allows you to do just that.” Last winter New Zealanders visited the What’s My Number p EECA technical adviser Christian Hoerning uses the bucket test to ensure to ensure a shower is working efficiently website more than 60,000 energy wise times, with the national average for estimated savings identified and with many families saving up to by the site coming in at $175 annually, $500. ¢

Architect or designer-managed If you are using a registered architect to custom-design your home, they will probably offer a full service, which includes managing the project. In fact, they will probably prefer this option. If the plans are being drawn by an architectural designer or an architectural draughtsperson, they may also offer this service. Keeping on the architect/designer means paying for their services, and you may be tempted to stop using them once the plans are drawn to make some savings. This could prove to be false economy. The plans are only written instructions. Are you confident that you will be able to interpret them when the builder asks a question about them? If they are interpreted incorrectly, there could be costly mistakes, and it may not be clear who is liable for the costs once the architect has stepped away from the project. Company-managed When you use a group housing company, or kitset/pre-built home, the price usually includes the services of a project manager. Often you are buying the section, plans and building services as part of the package and don’t have to organise any of this yourself. However, it doesn’t mean stepping away and not taking any interest in the project. Builder-managed When you hire a builder on a full contract, depending on what is in the terms of the contract, they can manage everything from getting a designer, hiring the subcontractors, liaising with you on variations and getting materials on-site. Or, you might have a hybrid arrangement where you use an architect

or designer to do the plans and have an overview of the entire project, as well as monitor the budget and progress payments, but the builder takes on the hiring and acquiring of materials and organising inspections. The responsibilities need to be clearly spelt out in the contract. Other professionals Other professionals, like quantity surveyors, sometimes take on the project management task. This can happen by default, for example, when the project manager you engaged lets you down. Project management companies There are companies that specialise in providing project management services for building construction. They are usually involved in apartments or commercial sites, but often manage ordinary homebuilding where the house is a complicated design or at the expensive end of the market. Or they get called upon by busy people who want someone to take the whole project off their hands. Most project management companies are happy to be approached and discuss your new house with you.

Small firms, or people working alone, also offer their services as project managers. You will pay a fee for their services. Check with the individual companies and managers to see how their fees compare to those of the architect, or the margin you pay the builder to manage the project. As with any project management, what you pay in fees can often be saved by avoiding the expensive mistakes on a badly-managed building site. ¢

Old adage, new edge by Andy Bryenton

Those who know a bit about motoring history, will know that Lotus boss Colin Chapman famously said that the recipe for a better car, was to simplify and add lightness.

Now from the exotic to the more prosaic — what happens when this philosophy is applied to one of the most popular small runabouts in the world? The Suzuki Swift is now in its fourth modern generation, and that means a sporty alternative is also on the tarmac. So how have the research and development team from the company, most famous for their face-meltingly fast superbikes, made this lively little machine out-supermini the actual Mini? By taking a leaf from Mr Chapman’s book in the chassis department. The Swift Sport is based on the same HEARTECT platform as the tiny Ignis crossover, and while much of its bodywork seems larger — that aggressive grille, chin spoiler, flared arches and more — this is more to do with stance than added mass. The all-important torque to weight ratio, which dictates how much power there is under the hood to offset the weight of the vehicle, has been pared down to a healthy 4.2 kilos to one Newton Metre.

just weld two Hayabusa blocks together they could rule the world — they have been bold enough to equip the new Swift Sport with the turbocharged engine from a full-sized SUV. In these modern times, taking the 1.4 turbo BoosterJet mill from the Vitara and landing it under the hood of the much lighter and more nimble Swift Sport, is the equivalent of bolting a Porsche boxer engine under the tail of the popular VW Beetle in the 1960s.

When it comes to producing that power, Suzuki have taken a design cue from way back in the 1970s. When car makers then wanted to make a sporty model of their usual family car, they weren’t shy about simply shoehorning in the biggest V8 they could find in the parts bin. Style plus substance by Andy Bryenton

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader. These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Tracing their history back to fighting 4x4s, both the new Jeep Compass and the Range Rover Velar have come a long way, switching their fatigues for a stylishly cut suit in the case of the English offering, and the calculated designer ruggedness of a modern outdoorsman for the Jeep. The Jeep takes the lead, in terms of blue-collar pricing and built-in ruggedness, with the Trailhawk variant boasting all the hallmarks of a brand forged on trails like the challenging Rubicon. Its 2.4 litre Tigershark series petrol engine delivers 229 Nm of torque to the ground via the tried and tested Jeep Active Drive Low system — and no less than nine gears in a smooth automatic transmission. This is no school run faux-wheeldrive — underbody skid plates, red competition style tow hooks, hill descent

control and even a rock crawling mode, make this the kind of machine that doesn’t understand the concept of getting stuck. At the same time, the cabin is a leather-wrapped cocoon of calm, and while the Grand Cherokee heads up the range for luxury, this middle-sized contender provides plenty of space, plenty of comfort and real off-road chops. Of course, the Range Rover Velar is also the middle child of the family, weighing in below the formidable Sport and above the Evoque. It’s a study in style, looking jaw-dropping from every angle, but there’s been no compromise on power — a V6 under the hood delivers better fuel economy and lower emissions too. While the cabin is appointed with luxurious leather and suede, unobtrusive infotainment and climate-controlled hush, outside this machine can tackle more than just the gravel driveway of

a stately home. With 21cm of ground clearance, a 24 degree breakover and 30 degree departure angle, along with electronically intelligent four-wheel drive controlling the differentials, the Velar

can go pretty much anywhere it likes. Very clever electronic air suspension works behind the scenes to keep all four wheels planted, and delivering power where it’s needed.
