Paparua and Templeton RSA President Brendan Muir, who attended the dawn service at Burnham Military Camp, said the numbers were up both at Burnham and Templeton where he went. “The feedback we are getting is that the number of people attending services across the district has increased. I think some of that can be put down to the significance of this year as marking 100 years since the outbreak of World War One. “There has been a change in the age dynamics of those attending with a lot more families with young children.
Schools are supporting Poppy Day and are generating interest in the younger generation. “We would like to thank all those who turned up this year to mark this occasion and all those volunteers who helped make everything run so smoothly.” Mr Muir said this year kicks off what is going to be five years of significant recognition for the over 18,000 New Zealanders who lost their lives in WWI which will culminate in the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day in 2018. Red Bus extends West Melton trial run

The Red Bus company is extending the trial period for its proposed new service between West Melton and Christchurch.
It’s the public’s turn to have their say on the future shape of the Selwyn District with a consultation period beginning on the Draft District Development Strategy. The strategy covers a range of issues across the district, according to Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe. These include future commercial and residential land, and what facilities, infrastructure and services will be required in both urban and rural areas. “The strategy includes a number of proposals which include developing area plans for Darfield and Leeston which would identify where shops, businesses and community facilities could be located in the future.” Mayor Coe said as the district’s population was expected to grow from approximately 45,000 to in advance of 74,000 by 2031 council wants to ensure the district remains prosperous and people are able to

Following public feedback in February the company agreed to trial a new Christchurch to West Melton afternoon service to complement the existing daily Darfield to Christchurch run. The trial run was due to finish on May 2. However, Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe said they are extending the trial West Melton service by a least another month. “We have been encouraged by the response by patrons to the new service and appreciate that support but it is borderline as to whether the service is viable. “We are hoping by extending the trial a few more will take up the opportunity.” Mr McNoe said it does take some time for patronage to build up on a new service. “When we first established the Darfield to Christchurch service it did take a while for patronage to build up
but now it is a well-used service.” He said they are looking to extend the afternoon service beyond West Melton, possibly as far as Darfield, but there are other factors which come into play in regard to that. “To make it viable we need to ensure the bus is back in Christchurch in time for the scheduled Darfield return leg and at the moment with all the disruptions to roading in Christchurch that is proving difficult.” He believed once the new central bus exchange was operational that may prove less of a problem. “Ultimately it will be the number of people using the West Melton service which will determine whether the service becomes permanent.” The afternoon service won’t be running over the school holidays and will resume on Monday, May 5 for the extended trial period. ¢

A JP is someone who is authorised to: •• Witness your signature on a document •• Certify copies of documents (eg passport, driver’s licence) •• Complete an affidavit or declaration for you •• Take an oath of allegiance for citizenship JPs are appointed by the Governor General, their services are free and confidential, and they have to abide by a Code of Practice. What’s so special about a JP? Potential Justices of the Peace are nominated by Members of Parliament. Nominees must have an adequate standard of education, be respected as someone with good sense, character and integrity, and have a genuine desire to serve their community. (More about the process of becoming a JP is on the Royal Federation of NZ Justices’ Associations website.) Making someone a JP isn’t a prize for being an honourable citizen, rather it is a way to enable that person to serve their community.
So, how do I find one? You could look in the Yellow Pages under ‘Justices of the Peace’. It groups JPs by suburb — which is handy if you are happy to see them at their home. But there’s a good chance they have a day job, and anyway you might not be comfortable visiting a stranger at their home. You can also try searching the website of the Royal Federation of NZ Justices’ Associations Inc. If a JP has a mobile phone, it will be listed — so you can text them to arrange a meeting time and place which suits both of you. Or, you can ask your local Citizens Advice Bureau — we’re more than just a directory. And some CAB interviewers are also JPs. Many CABs also hold regular JP clinics at set times. Check with your local Citizens Advice Bureau to find out whether they hold JP clinics and when. We can also help you find a JP elsewhere — there may be a JP clinic held at a local library or Community Law Centre. ¢

Selwyn youngsters now have the opportunity to give motocross a go thanks to the recently formed Canterbury Mini Motocross Club.
The Malvern Community Board has given the green light to a concept plan for remedial work on the newly built Darfield Medical Centre car park which will cost around $80,000.

The club has a track in development near Darfield where it plans to hold regular monthly club events. They also have tracks available to them near Rolleston and in North Canterbury said club spokesperson Dion Wiremu. “We’ve spent around $5,000 so far developing the Darfield track. It’s still not finished. It’s going good. We know we’ve got probably the best kids’ track in the South Island,” Mr Wiremu said. In operation for just two months the Selwyn based club already has 36 registered members and is attracting
interest from young motocross enthusiasts from Greta Valley to Timaru. “We saw there was a need for it. It’s difficult to find places for kids to ride, so we decided to start our own club.” The club is open to children from four to twelve years of age, with both introductory and racing classes. Mr Wiremu said safety is a big part of the clubs culture and they were looking to run training camps in the future. “The focus is 100% around kid’s safety. You love your children and want them to be in safe situations.” ¢

The medical centre building which was officially opened in March had attracted criticism from some members of the community about the car park design and size, according to Community board chairperson Jenny Gallagher. “People thought it was too tight to turn around and the car parks were too small,” Mrs Gallagher said. Selwyn District Council property services co-ordinator Rob Allen said
detailed designs were currently being drawn up by council. “Rough cost estimates based on this concept plan have been provided by council’s roading section and these are in the region of $80,000,” Mr Allen said. “The cost of the works will be known when the tenders close. This will then be reported to the community board and council for final sign-off for the works to proceed.” ¢

A flyover by a RNZAF Strikemaster and demonstrations by Christchurch Airport fire crews and local fire fighters were among the highlights of this year’s Wings and Wheels over Darfield. The biennial event is run by the Sheffield Fire Brigade as a fundraiser and this year’s funds will go to help them finish building a shed for training purposes in the winter and to house their support vehicle, and for communication equipment. The Sheffield Fire Brigade attends around 60 emergency calls a year, according to Fire Chief Nev Croy. He said around 70% of calls were medical
or motor vehicle accidents. The other 30% were fire or calls for other types of assistance. Winged machines included a Tiger Moth aeroplane, gliders and helicopters along with hot air balloons took to the skies above Darfield while on the ground those attending got close to a wide range of four-wheeled transportation including vintage cars, tractors and trucks and more modern vehicles. ¢ p A low pass by a RNZAF Strikemaster was one of the highlights of the day

They came from all over Selwyn to pay their respects to New Zealanders who died in the service of their country on ANZAC Day. From the dawn service at Burnham Military Camp to services at small Selwyn townships like Glentunnel, Sheffield and Hororata tributes were paid to those who fought and died in the two world wars and other conflicts like the Boer and Vietnam wars. Light rain fell as the parade begun in Rolleston but cleared to allow the service to run unhindered. The service was led by Deputy Mayor Sarah
Walters and among those who spoke were Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Lt. Samuel Platt from Bravo Company, 2/1 Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. Over 500 turned out in Darfield for a service held at the local war memorial where wreaths were placed by RSA members and community leaders in a service replicated in the small townships around the district. ¢

Before too long Nic realised he’d made a mistake. He shouldn’t have purchased that one alpaca. “You can’t just have one alpaca. They are herd animals. They’ll pine on their own. They talk to each other and rely on each other,” Nic said.
As a consequence more alpacas needed to be purchased and Nic and partner Linda Blake realised their burgeoning herd required land, so they bought their first property at West Melton. Now several properties later they own Southern Alpacas on the Main

He gets his herd shorn once a year and each fleece yields enough fibre to knit three or four jerseys. “They’re a lot easier than sheep. There’s no dagging or dipping. They’re more intelligent — they’ll work with you and they eat less than a sheep,” Nic said. Alpaca require plenty of fresh water and need inoculations every six months. They usually don’t have problems with fly strike, except this autumn with its warm wet weather and lack of frosts to kill off bugs. Nic said the life expectancy

of an alpaca is around twenty years with females being productive until they are fourteen to fifteen years old. Farmers need to watch out for parasitic worms, especially this autumn when parasites are rife. “You need to make sure the parasite load is not getting out of control,” he said. While alpacas are friendly and curious animals, which can be taken for a walk with a lead, Nic said they don’t like to be touched. “They have their personal space — around one metre. Generally you’re not going to cuddle them,” he said. Alpacas have a special language for
humans, humming only when humans are around. Alpacas are automatically house trained. Nic tells the story of a farmer from down South whose alpaca comes inside and watches television. They tend to toilet in one area in the paddock and their manure is high in nitrogen and great for the vegetable garden and roses. Nic said alpacas were generally well behaved, though they can become over excited when food is present. Spitting is something reserved for asserting their position in the pecking order. “They don’t normally waste good spit on humans,” Nic said. ¢

Over the last 100 years we have all witnessed the developed nations spending billions of dollars on military hardware to defend and enforce access rights to the world oil reserves, much of which is in the Middle East. Most people would not be concerned about this tumultuous area if it wasn’t for its valuable oil resource. During the next 100 years with the world population expanding out of control, the fight for access to fresh water supplies could cause water wars. It is predicted that Egypt, whose population is 68 million could reach 97 million by 2025. It gets no significant rainfall and relies on irrigated and seasonal floods from the Nile River and water stored behind the Aswan High Dam. Any interference of its water source by Sudan or Ethiopia could starve Egypt. Egypt is militarypowerful but vulnerable because of a lack of water. The World Bank has suggested that water wars are not far off. The United States Intelligence Community Assessment of Global Water Security predicts that by 2030 humanity’s ‘annual global water requirements’
will exceed ‘current sustainable water supplies’ by forty percent, and says that without intervention water insecurity will generate widespread social and political insecurity and could contribute to state failure in regions important to US national security. In China with 1.26 billion, the water table is dropping one metre per year due to over-pumping and the Chinese admit that 300 cities are running short of water. They are diverting water from agriculture and farmers causing them to go out of business. Some rivers are so polluted with heavy metals they can’t be used for agriculture. It is predicted that as farmers go out of business China will have to import more food. In India, with 1 billion people, key aquifers are being over-pumped, and
while Israel has invented many technologies such as desalination plants to convert sea water to fresh water, over-pumping of its aquifers is allowing sea water to pollute drinking water. In New Zealand we believe we are water-rich. The last thing we can imagine is that our fresh water supply could be threatened. We New Zealanders should take a strong interest in the government’s policy decision to promote water storage throughout New Zealand and monitoring the use of our valuable fresh water resource. Regional Councils have already initiated moves to quantify the fresh water resource in their regions and how the resource needs to be planned for and managed so everyone gets a fair share. This includes councils working with catchment groups to discuss the freshwater resource and how best to manage it. New Zealand farmers by law have an inherent right to take water supplies for their animals and to assist them in their farming practices, but many ask if farmers have the right to use unlimited water resources. In many parts of the country now, water bores are being monitored by the placement of water meters
and investigative studies are being undertaken to quantify the size of underground aquifers. We all need to be involved in future water management discussions. I believe that as people in other parts of the world come under pressure through the shortage of food and fresh water, New Zealand will come under increased pressure to accept more immigration. New Zealand’s economic wealth is through our ability to produce above our national consumption requirements and export our food and water products to the rest of the world and we must protect this. ¢

Synlait posts improved six month net profit figures Selwyn company Synlait Milk has posted a $12.1 million net profit after tax for the first six months to January 31, 2014, an increase of $5.3m or 78% on the $6.8m for the same period in 2013. Over the same period the company’s revenue increased by 61.5% to $284.9m compared to $176.4m for 2013. Synlait chairman Graeme Milne said the increases were largely

from our milk powder and cream products business. “However, this was partially offset by lower than expected earnings from our infant formula and nutritional products business due to regulation changes in China and New Zealand’s precautionary recall of WPC80.” Synlait Milk managing director Dr John Penno said overall they were pleased with the development of the business. “Higher than forecast earnings and strategic positioning continues to reinforce the confidence we have in our future,” Dr Penno said. “With a favourable product mix and an increasing amount of product sold into value-added applications we expect our milk powder and cream products business to outperform our initial public offer projections in 2014. “Despite it being clear that we will not meet our infant formula and nutritional volume targets for this financial year, we remain confident of meeting our long term objectives.” Dr Penno said that during the first half of this financial year they have made good progress with their target first tier multinational customers. “As a result we expect to be supplying infant formula ingredients and finished

Planning and planting an orchard u by Judy McDonald
Establishing an orchard on your lifestyle block can involve a good deal of work, and sometimes money, so it’s worth doing some careful planning before taking spade to soil. If you get it right, it will reward you for decades with home-grown fruit and nuts. Planning It’s important to look at the conditions you have on your property before beginning planting, because it’s easier to work with the natural patterns of your land than against them. Study air flow, water flow, orientation to the sun, and where the prevailing winds and frost come from. A slope is a great thing to have in an orchard, because it allows cold air to run downhill, and provides frost-free spots at the upper end. Wet patches and very dry spots on your land are not necessarily a bad thing — you just need to put the right plants in the right places. Hazelnuts, for example, like a good sharp winter chill, so a hollow that harbours frost is just the right place for them. Wet areas, particularly those rich in nutrients like the far end of your septic tank leach field, are great for plums.

Citrus also like high nutrients but don’t like wet feet. Dry, windy areas are ideal for trees that are prone to fungal and bacterial rots, so these areas can house nectarines, peaches and walnuts. Planting and maintenance The layout of your orchard can be traditional rows, or something completely different. Rows can be fine, especially if you are only growing a limited range of fruit trees, but it can create large gaps between plants which may need a tractor for grass and weed control. Consider not using a tractor in the orchard to avoid soil compaction and reliance on fossil fuels. Instead consider a food forest where planting is very mixed, and is based on the best microclimate for the species involved.

A minimum space of four to five metres between trees should be allowed, and large spreading trees like walnuts should be at least 25 metres apart. Thinking about the mature height of each tree is also important. Tall trees need to be positioned so they don’t shade other trees. To minimise grass and weed growth, use heavy mulching with organic material (a mixture of lawn clippings and dry leaves is good), applied during the wettest possible conditions to enhance soil moisture retention. Plant a ‘herbal ley’ which includes plantain, red clover, chicory, yarrow etc for their nutritive value and companion planting — for example dahlias are helpful near apple trees because
they harbour earwigs which eat codlin moth caterpillars. The final word on the subject of grass and weeds is don’t panic. Grasses only grow to a certain height and then fall over in autumn. As long as you clear around young trees and avoid fire hazards, they won’t do much damage to your orchard. Water conservation in the orchard is very important, especially if you don’t have a stream or bore available and are relying on rainwater. It’s very helpful to have storage tanks located as close to the top of your slope as possible. You can also use the ancient technique of building swales which is essentially small ditches like miniature terraces which retain water on the slope. And mulch heavily with organic
