Research shows lack of trust

New research from Lincoln University shows poor relationships between farmers …

Karen came away from the meeting as cooking coordinator and later, when her 18 year old daughter, Hannah saw what her mother was doing, she jumped at the chance to volunteer as well. Bellyful is a national not-for-profit organisation, which provides meals for families with newborn babies, and families with young children who are struggling with illness. Answering an advertisement in a local paper, Karen helped set up the Selwyn branch back in September 2015. “Wendy Thompson was at the meeting and she ‘volunteered’ me to be cooking coordinator,” Karen said. “I was a chef in the navy for five years, then a civilian chef for the army for 13, so I have the skills.” Karen said she loves the role she has with Bellyful. “I organise the meat and veggies then set up before everyone arrives. I make sure we are cooking the way we should. I know the rules including those that are different from home cooking around hygiene and portion sizes. “Now that my daughter has started volunteering, it’s very special.” Hannah is enthusiastic about working with Bellyful. “I care about the health and wellbeing of other people. I saw mum being part of Bellyful and when she asked if I wanted to join I was like, definitely. “I’ve done cooking and some of the deliveries with mum. I make sure her job is easier.” Hannah has just finished school and is working part-time at New

World before she starts her tertiary education, which will lead to a degree in social work. Both mother and daughter are focussed on what a difference a Bellyful meal can make. “I’m a mum myself,” Karen said. “It’s stressful with newborns and I didn’t have much support 20 years ago. Cooking is probably the last thing on the mind of a new mum or for someone with

a sick family member, so if they can just pop a meal in the microwave it can take away some of the stress.” It’s a busy and talented family. Alongside work and family Karen plays softball for the local mixed team and helps with their fundraising. Hannah loved the performing arts at school and she is going to keep playing violin and will soon be joining an orchestra. ¢

p Kennedys Bush Track on the fire damaged Port Hills is set to reopen to the public

The 5.3km track, which partially goes through a private forest area, has been closed to the public since the Port Hills fires in February 2017, for safety reasons. The track was officially reopened on Easter Sunday allowing people to again take in the beautiful views of Selwyn from the top of Kennedys Bush Track. Christchurch City Council city services general manager, David Adamson, said council staff have worked constructively with the trustees of the privately-owned land to get the area around the track

cleared of fire-damaged trees, and the track restored to a safe state, so the public can use it again. “The landowner has put a lot of effort into clearing the track, and we’re thrilled that we can open it again to mountain bikers and walkers,’’ Mr Adamson said. “People using the track though, need to remember that there is still logging activity occurring in the area. For health and safety reasons, and because the adjacent land is private land, it is critical they stay on the track, and don’t deviate away from it.’’ ¢

As well, a variety of fitness-inspired exercise gear and accessories will be offered as prizes. Selwyn District Council’s senior events and recreation adviser, Dave Tippett, said the Games Challenge is a chance for existing or new customers to be rewarded for attending fitness classes or swimming at the pool. “We encourage people to push themselves and participate in the challenge. If people have been thinking

about trying something new, this is a great opportunity to jump in to a fitness class or to get back in the pool.” The Challenge will take place during the Commonwealth Games, from Wednesday, April 4 through to Sunday, April 15. Mr Tippet said to take part, people can collect a Commonwealth Games Challenge card from any of the participating facilities. “Attend an exercise class or have a swim to get a podium level on the card signed off by facility staff. Sign off as many podium levels as possible and enter into either the Gold, Silver or Bronze draw to be in to win.” Normal class and pool entry prices apply. Gold again for West Melton UFB rollout in Selwyn u by Kent Caddick

u by Kent Caddick

West Melton School has done it again, winning gold at the recent Oderings School Garden Show.

An additional 13 areas have been included in the Ultra-Fast Broadband roll out in Selwyn.

p West Melton School students receive their gold award at the recent School Garden Show put on by the Canterbury Horticultural Society

Put on by the Canterbury Horticultural Society the theme for the fourth annual garden show was ‘Into the Future’, and it’s the third year in a row in which West Melton has taken out gold in the competition. However, it was the past, which inspired the West Melton students who took inspiration from the discovery of an old well in the school grounds. Principal, Sue Jackson, said an old well was found beneath the school during recent renovations. “The wishing well in our [show] garden both represents the past,

but also allows us to make our own private wishes for the future. “Our wishing well is divided and depicts clearly how our mind and our choices impact on our future wishes and plans. “I was so impressed with the end result and the creativity and collaboration, which had gone into preparing this event and showcasing our school in the wider community. “More importantly, the importance we attach to our environmental practices and how we ensure our learners drive their own learning, was clearly evident in our display.” ¢

Chorus has released dates for when work will start in the Selwyn towns included in the extension of the Ultra-Fast Broadband programme (UFB), starting with Southbridge in February next year and finishing with Castle Hill in November 2021. Chorus’s general manager of infrastructure, Ed Beattie, said all up, an additional 13 areas are now included in the programme in Selwyn. “Following work with the Government, Crown Infrastructure Partners and our build service companies, we have been able to bring the programme completion forward by a massive two years from 2024 to 2022,” Mr Beattie said. “This is great news for the Selwyn towns included in the programme, as it means a number of places will get fibre much faster than previously thought.” All up, Chorus is building the fibre network to more than 1.3 million homes, businesses, schools and medical centres right across New Zealand. The latest figures show that the first stage of the UFB build is 70% complete, with about 800,000 premises now able to connect to fibre. Fibre uptake in Chorus areas

3

p Chorus’s general manager of infrastructure Ed Beattie says the UFB rollout in Selwyn has been brought forward

across the country is currently at 42%, well ahead of the initial 2020 target of 20%. Mr Beattie said the big growth drivers for data use were video and smart devices. “People’s viewing habits have shifted online. It’s now very mainstream to watch television shows and movies via an app on a smart television or tablet. “Many of the most popular television shows are online. But it’s not just international providers like Netflix who are offering content online, domestic broadcasters TVNZ and Three both launched live streaming services in 2017.” ¢

Prison veggies help local families

Lincoln alumni medals to be awarded

A financial leader and a former government minister from Bhutan will be recognised in this year’s Lincoln University’s alumni awards.

Christchurch Women’s Prison horticulture training course is making a difference in the local community by providing vegetables to families.

p Loading up the van with prison produce for 0800 Hungry

The prison, near Templeton, is running the course to help inmates learn new skills to enhance their work opportunities on release. “The vegetable garden is thriving with the attention of the women on the programme; providing the prison with an opportunity to share the produce with others,” Prison residential manager, Richard Shuker, said. Mr Shuker, said the prison had been supplying around 10 to 20 large vegetable bins at a time to 0800 Hungry. 0800 Hungry is a non-profit Christian

ministry that delivers food parcels through more than 150 churches and agencies in Canterbury. The vegetables include: corn, cabbages, pumpkins, silverbeet, courgettes, broccoli and tomatoes. “Making those vegetables free to families can make a real difference to their meal options and also frees up some money for other family expenses,” said Mr Shuker. This month the prison will also have vegetables available for prisoners’ families to take home as they leave after visits.  ¢

New pedestrian bridge for Lincoln

Have your say

One of the longest pedestrian bridges in the Selwyn district has been opened.

The Council adopted its Long Term Plan Consultation Document, Fast Forward ’28, last month and is now seeking residents’ feedback. Fast Forward ’28 sets out the key projects and activities the Council is planning, and how these will be funded. Average annual rate rises of 4% are forecast over the next 10 years and residents have until May 4 to make a submission. Mayor Sam Broughton, said council is proposing substantial investments in facilities and services to support the district’s current population and continued growth. “Selwyn is now the third-largest district in the South Island, and it’s important we plan to ensure our infrastructure and facilities meet our communities’ needs.” Mayor Broughton said the proposals in the plan represent a balance between completing the projects that our communities need and continue to ask for, and keeping rates affordable. The plan outlines proposed new projects, as well as key developments already scheduled — like the completion of the Rolleston Town Centre. Nine significant new proposals are open for consultation. These include proposals for an indoor courts complex at Foster Park, an extension to Selwyn

The new timber bridge in the Lincoln Esplanade Reserve, which crosses the Liffey Stream between Esplanade Reserve land south of Moffat Drive and Ryelands Drive, has been built by the Selwyn District Council.Council’s land development project manager, Phil Millar, said the new bridge is a wonderful addition to Lincoln’s network of walkways. “Get your walking shoes on and go for a walk over Lincoln’s new bridge and along the Esplanade Reserve. The views from the bridge of the Liffey are breathtaking,” Mr Millar said.

Lincoln Community Committee member, Lindsay Wilson, said the committee is delighted to have the bridge installed and open to the public. “The committee has been hugely supportive of the construction of the bridge and the improved access to the Liffey,” Mr Wilson said. “We encourage the public to see and walk across it.” The bridge is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the Selwyn district, having a 20 metre central span (the distance between two intermediate supports for a structure) and 32m in length in total. ¢

the Brookers farm on Highfield Road in Aylesbury, featured a huge display of all things vintage, from steam engines, tractors and trucks, to stationary engines and many other machinery. Event coordinator, Rae Horn, said they were pleased with the way the weekend went despite the bad weather. “We had over 650 machines on display, including 10 steam engines and 10 fire trucks,” Mrs Horn said. “They came from all over the South Island, as well as from Taranaki and Gisborne, which just shows how passionate these people are. “The feedback I have had from our members has really been positive; so using that as a measure I would say the event was a success.” Mrs Horn said they would really like to thank Andrew and Mirie Brooker for the generous use of their property for the event. ¢

Making security top priority Security Matters owner-operator Ross Thomas has made it his personal goal to provide the best and most effective products, unparalleled service, delivered at the best possible value. The company is based in Christchurch with years of experience in the industry and offers a wide range of electronic security products, including intruder alarms for home and business, CCTV surveillance systems and access control. “Our point of difference is the service that we offer. I’m on the tools and the selling so I really know what I’m talking about,” says Ross. Ross is a self-confessed tech geek and says he gets a kick out of putting in the hard work to install something to see it all come together at the end. “I quite enjoy hearing about when a system does what it’s supposed to do. People tell me when they set their alarm off accidentally ‘I could hardly stay in the building, it was so loud,’ which is what we want.” Ross says they have had a few occasions where customers have had break ins and not one of them have had something stolen. “The burglar might kick in the door, but when one of our alarms go off they are gone.

“As a home security alarm specialist, I am regularly confronted with families facing the trauma of living through the burglary of their home and belongings. It pains me to see what these people go through and the effect it has on them. “It’s not simply the loss of personal property, but the feelings of anxiety and violation, which often leaves the worst scars for victims of home burglary. While electronics, TVs and stereos can be replaced, what about those irreplaceable items such as family heirlooms and jewellery?” Whether it is about giving your family piece of mind or protecting your business assets, Security Matters have the expertise and equipment to make the security of your home or Ross Thomas, Security Matters owner-operator business their top priority. “Don’t wait until you have been burgled to install a home security alarm system.”

Tech this out ADVERTORIAL

The end of tobacco by Andy Bryenton

If you’re reading this, and you’re a smoker, it’s a fair bet that you’ve tried to give up. More than that — you would like to give up, despite feeling defiant in the face of all the PC social pressures and tax hikes, which are designed to force your hand. It’s just that, statistically, and like me, you’ve tried before, and the gum, the patches, the hypnosis, the willpower or the praying, in any combination, didn’t work. That’s why I approached the newest alternative warily. I wanted to kick the smoking habit, and I was pleased to discover that behind the trend was a serious business like Cosmic, backed up with a whole lot of knowledge. I invested in a basic vape pen of unobtrusive dimensions, and opted for one of the huge number of flavours of liquid available — Vanilla Pod. A clean break with the entire smoking experience was a choice which worked, and the fun of experimenting with flavour combinations was the key to another factor in successfully kicking the habit

— other regimes of patches and gum are a kind of penitent ordeal of selfdenial. I was enjoying Georgia Peach, Pink Melon and a Short Black flavoured vapour with an ever-decreasing level of nicotine. Within a matter of weeks the thought of burning actual plant matter seemed ludicrous. Within a couple of months, even the temptation to smoke after enjoying a cold pint had vanished. Replaced, no doubt, but gone. It has been well worth the tiny investment in technology, financially alone. There’s a bewildering array of choice out there, but if you’re approaching this

Spotlight on West Melton

The growth of West Melton u by Kent Caddick

West Melton is one of the fastest growing towns in Selwyn. Since the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, West Melton has become a popular destination for people from Christchurch who have lost their homes or wanting to move out of a city, which is going through years of recovery. Because of this the school roll has rocketed leading to a building programme, the town has its first shopping complex and now its first residential development on the southern side of the highway. West Melton’s planned $6 million multipurpose community and recreation facility, which is under construction, will help to ease the pressure facing local community and sporting groups because of the population influx, and replace the town’s ageing community hall. In addition to the recreational facilities, such as a full-size indoor sports

courts, which can be used for a number of activities including basketball, netball, Badminton and Futsal, the new facility will also accommodate gymnastics and dance, as well as have a number of community use rooms, including a large digital seminar and learning suite. The new centre will also be the new base for Plunket, the West Melton Scout group and the West Melton Playcentre, which will move into the new facility from its current aging home, an old army barrack, which was sited alongside the old hall. The new building will be able to hold around 550 people and will also be available to corporate and private groups for hire. It is scheduled to open later this year. The name West Melton was given to the Selwyn settlement by settler Henry Trickett.

Research shows lack of trust New research from Lincoln University shows poor relationships between farmers and their meat processors could be costing New Zealand. As part of his research Lincoln’s Dr Nic Lees surveyed over 1000 sheep, beef and deer farmers. These three industries together make up 12% of New Zealand’s exports and currently contribute $5 billion a year to the country’s economy.

Dr Nic Lees said improving the relationship between farmers and meat processors was essential to New Zealand producing higher value products that meet consumer needs. “New Zealand is missing out on higher market returns for meat exports because of a lack of commitment and trust between farmers and meat companies,” Dr Lees said. “The majority of farmers do not commit to forward supply contracts that specify quality requirements and delivery schedules. “We effectively still have a system driven by production, rather than market requirements. Farmers sell stock based on their farming requirements and the number of stock and quality often does not match market needs.” He said consumers were increasingly making food choices based not only on quality, but also on factors such as food safety, animal welfare, provenance and environmental stewardship. The research showed that long-term committed relationships were necessary

to ensure farmers supplied stock to processors that met these requirements. “Furthermore, these closer relationships meant that farmers were also more profitable,” Dr Lees said. “This means that it’s a winwin for farmers, exporters and the New Zealand economy. Though many have believed this to be the case this is the first time research has clearly shown this.” He said increasing the value of exports provides a way to earn more without having to produce more. “This can help to address the current public concern about the impact of expanding farm production on the environment.” Dr Lees said the research had developed tools for companies to measure the quality of their relationship with suppliers p Lincoln University’s Dr Nic Lees says a poor relationship between farmers and meat processors is costing and identify what they can do the country to improve. “Expanding the use of these “Though a number of exporters are already using these tools; there is tools to other sectors, such as the potential for wider use by agricultural dairy and horticultural industries, and horticultural companies who could significantly increase the want to improve relationships with benefits of this research to the New Zealand economy.” ¢ their suppliers.

The new Canterbury Primary Industries Adverse Events Cluster Group is leading the integration of agencies in the primary industries, with the Canterbury Civil Defence & Emergency Management (CDEM) Group, to prepare for and respond to adverse events in rural Canterbury. The cluster is open to all agencies with involvement in Canterbury primary industries and CDEM. It is led and represented by a Rural Advisory Group (RAG) of the Canterbury Rural Support Trusts, Federated Farmers, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Canterbury CDEM Group, and representatives of each primary sector. At the group’s recent meeting two cochairs were elected, with New Zealand Veterinary Association Regional Branch Canterbury representative, Julia Pasztor, and North Canterbury Federated Farmers’ Provincial President, Lynda Murchison, taking on the roles. Ms Murchison spearheaded the informal coordination and response group Team Ag in response to the Kaikoura and Hurunui earthquakes. “In a disaster or adverse event, the new cluster group will mean we are prepared to manage information
